Recent Knesset approval for reforms aimed at lowering the price of
food could not have come at a better time, as data from the the Israel
Farmers Union reveals that mark-ups on fruits and vegetables this year have been as high as 300%. "This week, retail chains broke all records in the mark-up on prices charged for fruits and vegetables
-- a mark-up that amounts to hundreds of percentage points," said
Israel Farmers Union president Dov Amitai, attacking supermarkets for
the high prices they charge consumers compared to wholesale prices. According to the financial site Globes, the union gave numerous examples of egregiously high mark-ups: green beans
sold at NIS 25-27 per kilogram, compared to the wholesale price of NIS 8
per kilogram. There was a 180% mark-up on apples, squash bought for NIS
2 per kilo and sold for NIS 10 per kilo and sweet potatoes bought for
NIS 3 and sold for NIS 11. "Israeli consumers are paying a high price for our produce," says
Amitai. "Prices for fruit rose 60% in Israel in 2005-11, compared with
an average rise of 17% in the EU. Prices for vegetables rose by 29% in Israel over the same period, compared with 20% in the EU."For 2011, the average mark-up on fruits and vegetable in Israel was
51.2%. In June of this year, the mark-up on bananas reached 154% and the
mark-up on carrots and bell peppers was 90%.Recently, the Israeli government unanimously agreed to adopt reforms
presented by the Kedmi committee, the government panel tasked with
reporting on competition and prices in the food sector. One of the main reforms that will be adopted seeks to increase

The U.S. government said it had granted administrative leave to non-emergency federal workers in the Washington D.C area.The New York Stock Exchange said it would close its
trading floor on Monday for the first time since Hurricane Gloria in
1985. All stocks listed on the exchange will trade electronically, NYSE
Euronext said.President Barack Obama asked residents to heed the orders of state and local authorities to protect themselves from Sandy."This is a serious and big storm," Obama said after a
briefing at the federal government's storm response center in
Washington. "We don't yet know where it's going to hit, where we're
going to see the biggest impacts.Officials ordered many school closures, New Jersey
casinos and Broadway theaters prepared to close, airlines got ready to
halt flight activity in the New York area, and residents cleared store
shelves of vital supplies and food.EVACUATION ORDERS
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered the evacuation of low-lying areas of New York City, from upscale parts of lower Manhattan to waterfront housing projects in the outer boroughs, that are home to some 375,000 people."If you refuse to evacuate you're not only putting yourself at risk but also the first responders who will have put themselves at risk in an emergency," Bloomberg told a news conference.
In Bridgeport, Connecticut, Fire Department Captain Frank Rivera was ordering residents of 300 waterfront homes to evacuate."A lot of them are on their way out but some of them are thinking about (Hurricane) Irene and how they didn't get damage and I tell them it's two different animals," Rivera said, referring to the August 2011 hurricane that brought severe flooding to parts of New Jersey and Vermont.Officials warned that flooding could be particularly severe since the storm's arrival coincides with a full moon, which normally means higher-than-usual high tides."The most worrisome aspect of Sandy is the high tides," said Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee. "With the full moon occurring Monday, with Sandy coming up the Bay, we're very concerned about flooding in our low-lying coastal areas."New York City, New Jersey and Philadelphia transit authorities said they would begin shutting down service on Sunday afternoon. Maryland's transit system, serving some suburbs of Washington, said it would not open on Monday.Amtrak, the passenger rail service, canceled nearly all service on the Eastern seaboard on Monday and would halt its service north of New York along the Northeast corridor.Transit systems in Washington and Boston said they planned to operate as usual on Monday as long as it was safe to do so.Airlines flying into and out of New York's three major airports were all expected to cease flight activity on Sunday night, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.Forecasters said Sandy was a rare, hybrid "super storm" created by an Arctic jet stream wrapping itself around a tropical storm, possibly causing up to 12 inches of rain in some areas, as well as up to 3 feet of snowfall in the Appalachian Mountains from West Virginia to Kentucky.

Columbia, Florida, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and
Virginia, the U.S. Department of Energy said in a statement.While Sandy's 75 mph winds were not overwhelming for a
hurricane, its exceptional size means the winds will last as long as two
days, bringing down trees, roofs and buildings and piling up rainfall

round-the-clock vigil for the approaching superstorm, and the tone of
its meteorologists turned more ominous Sunday with evidence building
that their forecasts would come true.The network is planning to
live-stream its television coverage online so people in the eastern
United States who lose power can keep up with the news on their mobile
devices. The storm is expected to affect some 50 million people."We
want you to know we are not hyping this storm, OK?" on-air
meteorologist Vivian Brown said. "We don't do that at The Weather
Channel because we want you to be alert and aware."Other
television networks mixed news of Hurricane Sandy with stories like the
presidential campaign. In New York, the local CBS outlet ran a split
screen with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie delivering a storm briefing
Sunday afternoon and the New York Jets' game against the Miami Dolphins.But
Hurricane Sandy, which is mixing with other weather systems to create a
storm of unprecedented strength in the region, kept the undivided
attention of The Weather Channel.The network's Julie Martin,
stationed on a beach in Nags Head, N.C., looked increasingly weary of
the wind and rain as she described the storm's staying power in a series
of live reports.Meteorologist Jim Cantore, the network's most
visible personality, said it was unlike anything he'd ever seen or
covered. He had to take a brief break from his live reports from New
York's Battery Park City to move his belongings because his hotel had

explained in an interview that the network tries to keep its tone
serious yet urgent. The network's computer models have been consistent
in their forecasts of the storm and it has been acting as anticipated,
perhaps with even more strength."Our goal has been to get people
to appreciate the magnitude of the storm and try to prove to them that,
based on everything we know, that this is going to be a system that is
outside of their experience," Norcross said.The Weather Channel
sent a message via Twitter calling it "an extraordinary storm, an
extremely serious threat" and urged followers to re-tweet it. The storm
"will occupy a place in the annals of weather history as one of the most
extraordinary to have affected the United States," the network tweeted.Quickly, the Business Insider tweeted: "WHOA. The Weather Channel meteorologist just completely freaked out."Twitter
filled with messages of concern for people in its path, as well as a
few oddities. Comic Ricky Gervais made an unprintable suggestion as a
joke, while media mogul Rupert Murdoch tweeted: "Eerie feeling, but kids

What's more unusual is the location and timing—nor'easters can get this big, but usually occur in the winter, he said.Hurricane Sandy began as a tropical cyclone,fueled by warm water, warm, moist air and the convection these phenomena can create, Davis told OurAmazingPlanet. These hurricanes can be likened to heat engines, transferring heat from the surface of the ocean to higher in the atmosphere. By contrast, extra-tropical cyclones are driven by a difference in temperatures over a wide area— cold air to the northwest, warm air to the southeast, which then swirls together, Davis said. This process is most efficient over huge distances, said. Sandy is progressing into an extra-tropical cyclone as it gets farther north, and tapping into the power of the jet stream, which ferries air from west to east over North America. The jet stream, like the storm itself, is powered by this temperature difference between air masses, he said.
