1 The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.
JEREMEIAH 49:23-27
23 Concerning Damascus.(SYRIA) Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea;(WAR SHIPS WITH NUKES COMING ON SYRIA) it cannot be quiet.
24 Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail.
25 How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!
26 Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD of hosts.

It has been in the making, as consistently predicted in this
blog, and now it is finally happening. The Sunni uprising against the
Alawite-dominated regime of Bashar Assad is fast approaching the point
of decision. The battles are taking place in the capital Damascus, and
the reports, while some may be somewhat exaggerated, are very clear: the
rebels of the Free Syria Army are fighting in the very center of the
city, are about to be, or already are in control of some of the
headquarters of the once feared intelligence organizations, and it is
all taking place minutes away from the presidential palace. By some
accounts, the palace is without residents, as Bashar and his immediate
family have already moved to the Alawite Mountains, something that was
also predicted in this blog.The fall of Damascus, once happening, will not be a nice event to
watch on TV. Many nights of long knives will follow, and the violence
will be of proportions unknown hitherto in the modern Middle East.
Historians will compare the bloodbath to another watershed in the long
history of the great city of Damascus, once one of the jewels of the
great Islamic civilization. It was in the end of September 1918, and the
Ottoman Empire was about to surrender to the Allies. The plan of the
British officers who led the Arab Revolt was to make sure that the
bedouins loyal to the Hashimite family entered Damascus first and
accepted the surrender of the Ottoman governor; but things did not work
out that way and a British unit led by a medium-level officer entered
Damascus first, and the Ottoman governor surrendered to them. The
transfer of power was described as "dignified," but nothing will be
"dignified" in Damascus in the next days/weeks/months.The revenge taken by the victorious rebels will be on a huge scale,
so the main questions to be asked now are about the coming days, and
what can be done to mitigate the inevitable mayhem. First, we need to
mention the people that are likely to suffer most. That being those
Alawites who somehow failed to flee back to the mountains; members of
the Ba'th party, including Sunnis, who maintained their loyalty to the
party on the expense of their communal solidarity; members of the
business community, who were very slow to change sides; and members of
the Christian community, particularly from Bab Touma, the famous
Christian quarter, whose history goes back to the early days of
Christianity.The Christians, though not all of them, have refrained from joining
the uprising, believing that the Alawite-dominated regime will be their
wall of defense against Sunni domination. Christian rank and file may
have joined the opposition, but the clergy, by and large, maintained its
loyalty to the regime. The Christian press in Lebanon conducted a
lively debate about the issue of Christian loyalty to Assad, and one of
the dominant themes was the fear that many Syrian Christians are in
danger of being subjected to a long spell of Sunni Winter.In 1861, Bab Touma experienced a massacre of huge proportions, when
thousands were slaughtered. Hopefully, this will not be the case this
time. Shi'ite mosques and shrines in Damascus will also be in the line
of fire, and altogether it will not be safe for Shi'ites, whether
Iranian or Lebanese, to stay in Damascus when the chaos will reign
supreme. Two other communities, the Kurds and the Druze, who inhabit
large neighborhoods in Damascus, may be spared the wrath of the
victorious rebels, and at any rate, unlike the Christians, these are
communities which in the past knew how to defend themselves.And chaos it will be, with the hope that it will not last for too
long, and will be under control as soon as possible. The political
leadership of the rebels, the Syrian National Council, lacks the power
to dominate the situation in Damascus, and it seems more likely that the
force more capable of exerting any sort of central authority will be
the Free Syria Army, which is not a coherent body but rather a loose
coalition of local militias. So, they too may not be able to do the job.
The chaos in Damascus may not be that much different than that which
prevailed in Beirut in 1975-6. The collapse of the regime will unleash a
welter of old conflicts, hatreds and loyalties, which were all
subjugated for decades under the yoke of the oppressive regime and will
now come to the open.All the above bodes ill, surely in the short term, and the challenge
facing the Syrian opposition, and even more so, the external powers
which support them, be it the U.S. or Saudi Arabia or Turkey, will be to
use whatever leverage they have in order to prevent the worst possible
scenario. Can they do it? They should try, and hopefully there are
contingency plans on hand, but the chances of it happening quickly are
not too high.Under these circumstances, the innocent citizens of Damascus are
going to suffer. They will rejoice with the final departure of the
regime from the city, but they will be subjected to unpleasant
situations which will tax to the limit their resilience and endurance.

For its part, said Eng. Bashayer Okasha, President of the local unit of the center of Mahmudiya, told «Egyptian today», he is now under way to save and raise fish in cages of live fish, adding that the report proved that the initial mortality due to high temperature, lack of oxygen.For his part, Engineer assigned to a selected Hamalawy, Governor of the lake, police bodies of water and the protection of the Nile to lift cages in the Nile, and extract the dead fish, in preparation for her execution....The centers of Mahmudiya and Rahmaniya and Rashid district of the lake, have seen, Saturday, the emergence of huge quantities of dead fish, estimated at 200 tons, on the surface of the water branch of the Nile Rashid, which led to the prevalence of a state of anxiety and fear among the public of the possibility of water contamination with toxic substances.The parents were surprised by the existence of huge quantities of dead fish on the surface of water, while the number of people forced to buy mineral water, because of fears of water contamination with toxic substances, having access to potable domestic water smell foul.Hamalawy and decided to form a committee composed of the Department of Health and veterinary medicine and the protection of the Nile and the water bodies for fish sampling and analysis, to determine the main causes of the deaths.

Bailout fund could become eurozone budget authority, says ECB

BRUSSELS - Eurozone states need to give
up more sovereignty in order to fix the construction flaws of the euro,
with the bailout fund possibly turning into a budget authority further
down the road, European Central Bank board member Joerg Asmussen has
said."We have construction mistakes of Economic and Monetary Union and it
is time to correct them. It is clear that the core of the current debate
has a name: further sharing of sovereignty," Asmussen said Tuesday (17
July) at the European Policy Centre, a Brussels-based think tank.Part of the vision - which the ECB is shaping in a report drafted by
EU council chief Herman Van Rompuy - is a cap on how much debt countries
can issue, intervention in national budgets and fiscal corrections
imposed if a country deviates from the deficit and debt limits imposed
in the eurozone.A common budgetary authority could also be formed, Asmussen said,
with the upcoming permanent bailout fund, the European Stability
Mechanism, a "starting point.""The ESM is a fiscal authority by definition because it deals with
taxpayers' money," he explained, adding that it would have to be put
under the scrutiny of the European Parliament - or a subdivision of it
pooling MEPs from eurozone countries only.The €500bn-strong ESM is yet to be set up, pending a ruling of the
Constitutional Court in Germany due on 12 September. Under current
rules, the Parliament has no say over the ESM.Asmussen said this needed to change and that the ECB itself should be
under more scrutiny from the European Parliament, as it will acquire
new supervisory powers of banks in the euro area."Deeper euro area integration can only be sustainable if there is
progress on democratic legitimacy. And it should not be only the ECB
continuously emphasising it," he said, adding that already now national
parliaments could be involved more so that they "internalise" what it
means to be an economic union.As for the ten EU countries outside the euro area, Asmussen said they

In a move to bolster military strength against Iran, 20 nations will stage an anti-mining exercise in Mideast waterways, the Associated Press (AP) reported.Defense Department press Secretary George Little said the large minesweeping exercise, set to take place September 16-27, is a defensive drill and is "not ... aimed to deliver a message to Iran."The upcoming exercise will focus on "a hypothetical threat from an
extremist organization to mine the international strategic waterways of
the Middle East, including the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Gulf of
Oman, and the Persian Gulf, although exercise activities will not extend into the Strait of Hormuz," U.S. Central Command said in a statement."This is a defensive exercise aimed at preserving freedom of
navigation in the international waterways of the Middle East and aimed
at promoting regional stability," Little told Pentagon reporters on
Tuesday.Word of the exercise follows Monday's announcement that a second U.S.
aircraft carrier will be sent to the region in September, several
months earlier than planned, in order to ensure there will be two
carriers in the region through early next year, AP reported.

Russia Vows to Block UN Syria Sanctions, Says Assad Won’t Quit

military action against Syria, saying such a step would
encourage the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad.“Adopting this resolution would mean direct support for
the revolutionary movement,” Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov

Agence France-Presse. “If we are talking about revolution, the
UN has no business here.”The UN Security Council is due to vote today on a Western-
proposed resolution on Syria under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter,
which empowers the council to impose sanctions and authorizes

was named marshal, a title cementing his status atop the authoritarian

Flood-battered Japan warily eyes typhoon

heap further misery on an area where at least 32 are dead or missing
after record rainfall.Typhoon Khanun was lashing the Amami island
chain, south of Kyushu where four days of torrential rain have sparked
landslides and flooding, forcing hundreds of thousands of people from
their homes.Khanun -- "jack fruit" in Thai -- packing winds of up
to 108 kilometres (67 miles) per hour, was moving west-northwest at 30
kilometres per hour and was expected to graze the west of Kyushu island,
the Japan Meteorological Agency said.Tuesday morning brought a
lull in the rainfall for most of the region, but the weather agency was
warning that there could be up to 15 centimetres (six inches) of rain in
the 24 hours to 6:00 pm (0900 GMT) in the north of Kyushu.

Two dead, 19 injured in Toronto shooting

people were killed and several others, including an infant, were
injured in a shooting in Canada's largest metropolis Toronto, police
said."2 ppl killed in gunfire that
broke out during party," police said in a Twitter message. "Deceased are
a male and a female," said a second message by Police Chief Bill Blair.He described the incident as "the
worst incident of gun violence" in the city's history. "A lot of
innocent people were injured tonight."Blair told reporters that during a "very large party" with more than
200 guests "an altercation broke out between individuals" that lead to
an exchange of gunfire. The shooting occurred on Danzig Avenue, near
Morningside Avenue and Lawrence Avenue East in the city's east side
after a fight at a crowded barbecue.Blair said a 20-year-old man and a young teenage girl were killed, and as many as 19 were injured in the melee.Constable Wendy Drummond added "not all of those victims are gunshot victims."
"We have a child, an infant, that is also a victim," she said.The child was shot, said Blair, adding that the "infant will be fine."Broadcaster CityNews reported
that a 20-year-old woman was shot in the back and at least eight others
aged 18 to 25 were taken to hospitals in the Scarborough area with
gunshot wounds.
In another message, police asked, "Witnesses/people at party or nearby, please let us know what you saw/heard."One "person of interest" is in custody, said Blair, as a swarm of police searched the area for possibly two or more shooters.
