The recent recession wiped out nearly two decades of Americans’ wealth, according to government data released Monday, with middle-class families bearing the brunt of the decline.
The Federal Reserve said the median net worth of families plunged by 39 percent in just three years, from $126,400 in 2007 to $77,300 in 2010. That puts Americans roughly on par with where they were in 1992.
The data represent one of the most detailed looks at how the economic downturn altered
the landscape of family finance. Over a span of three years, Americans
watched progress that took almost a generation to accumulate evaporate.
The promise of retirement built on the inevitable rise of the stock
market proved illusory for most. Homeownership, once heralded as a
pathway to wealth, became an albatross.The findings underscore
the depth of the wounds of the financial crisis and how far many
families remain from healing. If the recession set Americans back 20
years, economists say, the road forward is sure to be a long one. And so
far, the country has seen only a halting recovery.“It’s hard to
overstate how serious the collapse in the economy was,” said Mark Zandi,
chief economist for Moody’s Analytics. “We were in free fall.”The
recession caused the greatest upheaval among the middle class. Only
roughly half of middle-class Americans remained on the same economic
rung during the downturn, the Fed found. Their median net worth — the
value of assets such as homes, automobiles and stocks minus any debt —
suffered the biggest drops. By contrast, the wealthiest families’ median
net worth rose slightly.Americans have tried to rebalance the family budget but have found it difficult to reverse the damage.The
survey showed that fewer families are carrying credit card balances,
and those who do have less debt. The median balance dropped 16 percent,
from $3,100 in 2007 to $2,600 in 2010. The Fed also found that the
percentage of Americans who have no debt rose to a quarter of families.But
that progress was undermined by other factors, leaving the median level
of family debt unchanged. The report said more families reported taking
out education loans. Nearly 11 percent said they were at least 60 days
late paying a bill, up from 7 percent in 2007. And the percentage of
families saddled with debts greater than 40 percent of their income
stayed the same.Not only were Americans still facing significant
debts, but they were making less money. Median income fell nearly
8 percent, to $45,800, in 2010. The median value of stock-market-based
retirement accounts declined 7 percent, to $44,000.
But it was the implosion of the housing market that inflicted much of the pain. The median value of Americans’ stake in their homes fell by 42 percent between 2007 and 2010, to $55,000, according to the Fed.The poorest families suffered the biggest loss of wealth from the drop in real estate prices. But middle-class Americans rely on housing for a larger part of their net worth. For some, it accounts for just more than half of their assets. That means every step downward is felt more acutely.Rakesh Kochhar, associate director of research at the Pew Hispanic Center, calls this phenomenon the “reverse wealth effect.” As consumers watched the value of their homes rise during the boom, they felt more confident spending money, even if they did not actually cash in on the gains. Now, the moribund housing market has made many Americans wary of spending, even if their losses are just on paper.According to the Fed survey, that paper wealth — or what is officially called unrealized capital gains — shrank 11 percentage points, to about a quarter of Americans’ assets.The findings track research Kochhar released last year that showed a dramatic drop in household wealth during the recession, particularly among minorities. That study found record-high disparities between whites’ wealth and that of blacks and Hispanics.“It was turning the clock back quite a bit,” Kochhar said.The Fed’s survey is conducted every three years. EU finance bosses have discussed controlling ATM withdrawals, subjecting the citizens of member states to rigorous border checks, and imposing capital controls “as a worst-case scenario should Athens decide to leave the euro,” Reuters reports.The banksters are seriously worried about the second Greek election on June 17 and are working on “contingencies” should a leftist coalition, SYRIZA, win the second election and increase the probability that Greece will ultimately renege on its EU/IMF bailout and dump the euro currency.SYRIZA is a Greek abbreviation for Coalition of the Radical Left. It is comprised primarily of democratic socialists, green left groups and Maoist, Trotskyist and eurocommunist organizations.
The political party is second largest in the Greek parliament. During the 2012 elections, millions of disenfranchised voters facing bankster imposed austerity voted for SYRIZA, quadrupling its number of seats. Earlier this month, the group re-registered as a single party instead of as a coalition, in order to receive the 50 additional seats which will make it the largest polling party under the Greek electoral system.
SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras has pledged to dump the EU-IMF bailout. Tsipras said forcing Greece to return billions of euros in rescue loans will lead Greece towards collapse.“If one of the 17 countries is brought to collapse … the fire will become unquenchable and will not be limited to Greece and the southern countries … it will break up the eurozone and that will not be in anybody’s interests,” he said during a news conference.On Monday, EU central banksters rushed to prevent a run on Spain’s banks as they teetered on the edge of disaster.“The burden of recapitalizing insolvent banks or loss-making acquisitions of solvent banks will fall on Spanish citizens,” said Karl Whelan, economist at University College, Dublin. “For this reason, this weekend’s announcement may well end up shutting Spain out of the sovereign bond market.”
Fitch Ratings last week cut Spain’s credit rating to BBB, just above junk status.The EU’s third largest economy is also looking for a bailout. Italy believes the deal to prop up Spain represents “the removal of a filter” that separated Spain and Italy from the group of heavily indebted EU countries, with Greece leading the way. Italy’s “public debt” currently accounts for 120 percent of its GDP.The banksters warn that Italy will follow Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain, and eventually seek an aid package as the EU begins its descent.It now appears the EU will impose some sort of police action to prevent its citizen-subjects from taking money out of banks and preventing them from fleeing the country as chaos ensues in the wake of one country after another toppling.

Reuters has filed a report claiming that the European Union is making
preparations to contain the effects of panic if Greece was to exit from
the Euro. Among the measures they are considering imposing are a limit
on the amount of money that can be withdrawn from cashpoints, imposing
border checks, and introducing controls to stop a flight of capital from
the country.
So is a crisis imminent, and what does it mean for holidaymakers?
Likely exit?
It is hardly surprising that people are talking this way, as the eurozone is facing a number of crises from several angles. The Spanish banking crisis was just the latest, and the Greek election waits in the wings - where a victory for anti-austerity groups could make a Greek exit far more likely.Ted Scott, Global Strategy Director, F&C explains: "The bailout of the Spanish banks is yet another policy announcement that does little more than buy time and remove short-term systemic risk, perhaps until Sunday. A 'positive' Greek election result will buy more time but eventually the politicians will have to choose the path between full fiscal union or break-up. "He added: "If no new major policy measures are agreed in late June then the current rally will be short lived and the heat will be on the policy makers to act once again."Meanwhile, Cyprus has been touted as the next big concern, as it is so exposed to Greek banks. It may need a bail out by the end of the month.
Is travel safe?
Many of the countries caught up in the crisis are major destinations for British tourists, raising concerns for those who have trips planned over the summer.The first is the possibility of unrest. There have been outbreaks of violence across Europe, and there remain the possibility of more. The advice is always to check the FCO recommendations online before you travel. If they recommend you don't go there, you will be entitled to a refund through your travel insurance. If there are no concerns raised by the FCO then you should be fine to travel - although it is advisable to take extra care.The second is the worry that the euro would immediately cease to become legal tender. The experts have advised that this wouldn't be the case, and that wherever there is a changeover of currency, there will be a period where both currencies are accepted by large stores and tourist services.Then there are concerns that banks may be closed for a number of days if there is a change in currency while tourists are out there. It may therefore be advisable to pre-load a card with spending money and consider taking more cash than you would normally do, in case there is difficulty in spending on plastic.Of course, there is always the possibility that concerns among travellers have dampened demand for your destination, so you may also find real bargains - from the holiday itself to spending while you are out there.Travel to Europe this summer may be more of a risk than it normally is, but it may be far more rewarding too.

Islamic world should rise up and shout that a nuclear bomb is our
right.”The regime under Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has constantly stated that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.The commentary was published by Fars News Agency, which is run by the Revolutionary Guards tightly and usually publishes official opinion. As the atrocities mount in Syria, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has started increasing the pressure on Russia, which, as Syria's biggest weapons supplier, is propping up the regime of dictator Bashar Assad. In a speech in Oslo last week, she said that Russia's refusal to halt this arms trade flies in the face of international efforts to sanction Syria and raises serious concerns in Washington.It's a principled stance, but it presents a major consistency problem. Even as the administration slams Russian arms exporters for shipping weapons to Syria, the Pentagon is doing a multimillion-dollar business with Russian arms exporters.The Defense Department contracted a year ago to buy 21 Mi-17 helicopters from Rosoboronexport, a state-owned Russian arms dealer that's heavily involved in the Syrian arms trade. The Mi-17 is sort of like the helicopter equivalent of the AK-47, a reliable and comparatively cheap craft that's unusually suited for the harsh environments of the Middle East. The $375 million contract is to supply helicopters for the Afghan military.To say this sends a mixed message is an understatement; by continuing to buy Russian weapons even as it calls for Russia to stop selling weapons to Syria, Washington demonstrates that there will be no consequences if Russia fails to comply. It signals that the U.S. cares more about its mercantile or strategic interests than the human rights of the Syrian people - just as Moscow clearly does.The Rosoboronexport contract has attracted concern in Congress. In March, a bipartisan group of 17 senators sent a letter to Clinton and Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta urging the Pentagon to review all options for procuring helicopters for Afghanistan through other means; some senators favor buying only American-made choppers. The Pentagon has responded by saying the Russian craft are cheaper, highly versatile in their load-carrying capacity and are already familiar to Afghan pilots and mechanics, who have been using them for decades. (According to a Defense spokeswoman, the Mi-17 was actually designed for use in Afghanistan.)Opponents of the contract don't think that's good enough. The House version of the defense authorization bill contained an amendment ordering the Government Accountability Office to investigate the helicopter contract and why it was awarded on a "no-bid" basis; a companion amendment is making its way to the Senate floor. We think a full investigation of the alternatives makes sense. If there is any practical way to punish Russia and its arms merchants for their support of Syria, where thousands have been slaughtered by Assad's repressive regime, the U.S. is obliged to pursue it.

Russia is
sending attack helicopters to Syria for President Bashar Assad's regime
to use in its campaign to stamp out opposition, Secretary of State
Hillary Rodham Clinton said today.She warned that such action "will escalate the conflict quite dramatically."The
U.S. and Russia have been at odds over how hard to squeeze the regime
in an effort to end its harsh crackdown on anti-Assad protests — a
crackdown that the U.N. says has killed more than 10,000 people since
March 2011, mostly civilians.Last month, Clinton accused Russia of "propping up" the Assad regime. Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected that charge.
He also said Russia doesn't supply weapons "that can be used in civil
conflicts." So it will be interesting to see how he or his aides respond
to Clinton's latest charge.As The
Associated Press points out: "Russia and Syria have a longstanding
military relationship and Syria hosts Russia's only naval base on the
Mediterranean Sea."On All Things Considered Friday,
Andrew Tabler of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy
described how the Assad regime uses its "armed forces, shelling [and]
helicopter gunships" to clear areas of opposition and then sends in
Shabiha militia units to further terrorize the people and hold the
ground.

The Russian firm in question is Rosoboronexport, which supplied Iran with defensive missile systems in 2006 and continues to maintain business ties with Iran in the missile sector.

Congress, meanwhile, is concerned that Russian companies are selling the Iranians equipment that is supposedly destined for commercial satellites, but could also serve Iran's ballistic weapons industry.
While the Russian government has taken steps to control and enforce ballistic missile technology in the past decade, it has not fully succeeded, the report noted.

The MTCR forbids countries from exporting missiles whose range exceeded 300 kilometers or can support warheads that weigh more than 500 kilograms.
Some Republicans are accusing President Barack Obama of attempting to bury the documents to avoid damaging US-Russia agreements on trade and space programs.
US-Russian relations have been held to a test since Vladimir Putin was re-elected president, and the Iranian issue is a bone of contention. Last month, Moscow warned Washington of "severe ramifications" on bilateral ties if Russian companies operating in Iran were affected by the new US sanctions on the Islamic Republic. In addition, Russian has expressed willingness to help Iran build a new nuclear reactor at Bushehr.
The US, for its part, opposes Putin's proposal to reduce NATO defense systems and allow Russia to protect Europe from ballistic missile threats. Three years ago, Obama pulled back from a Bush Administration plan to set up a ballistic missile defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic, and replaced it by deploying advanced ships that could take down ballistic missiles.
Since then, Washington has launched a broad-based defense program that includes Spain, Turkey, and Romania – which Russia, fearing threats to its nuclear deterrence – was also invited to join.
