The British government has dusted off previously shelved plans to create huge databases, enabling spy agencies to monitor every phone call, email and text message as well as websites visited by everyone in the country.The Telegraph reports that under the plans, the government will force every communications network to store the data for one year. The plans also extend to social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and gaming sites.The plans, drawn up by MI5, MI6 and GCHQ, the government’s secret eavesdropping agency, may be officially announced as soon as May, according to details seen by the Telegraph. Those agencies would have real time access to the records kept by companies such as Vodafone and British Telecom.The records would allow the spy agencies to monitor the who, when and where of every phone call, text message and email sent, while also allowing for internet browsing histories to be matched to IP addresses.Unassumingly titled the Communications Capabilities Development Programme (CCDP), the new scheme is set to be implemented under anti-terrorism laws, with the spy agencies saying it will allow them to more closely monitor suspects ahead of the London 2012 Olympics in July.Critics and civil liberties advocates are calling for mass opposition to the plans, noting that the scheme is open to abuse not only by spy agencies and communications companies themselves, but also by hackers and online criminals.

Jim Killock, executive director of the Open Rights Group, a civil liberties campaign organisation, said: This would be a systematic effort to spy on all of our digital communications.No state in history has been able to gather the level of information proposed – it’s a way of collecting everything about who we talk to just in case something turns up. Killock added.Gus Hosein, of Privacy International, said: “This will be ripe for hacking. Every hacker, every malicious threat, every foreign government is going to want access to this.And if communications providers have a government mandate to start collecting this information they will be incredibly tempted to start monitoring this data themselves so they can compete with Google and Facebook.The internet companies will be told to store who you are friends with and interact with. While this may appear innocuous it requires the active interception of every single communication you make, and this has never been done in a democratic society. The programme, known as the Interception Modernisation Programme, would have allowed spy chiefs at GCHQ, the centre for Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) activities, to effectively place a live tap on every electronic communication in Britain in the name of preventing terrorism.Following outcry over the announcement, the government suggested that it was scaling down the plans, with then Home Secretary Jacqui Smith stating that there were absolutely no plans for a single central store of communications data.However, as the climbdown was celebrated by civil liberties advocates and the plan was replaced by new laws requiring ISPs to store details of emails and internet telephony for just 12 months, fresh details emerged indicating the government was implementing a big brother spy system that far outstrips the original public announcement.The London Times published leaked details of a secret mass internet surveillance project known as Mastering the Internet(MTI).Costing hundreds of millions in public funds, the system continued to be implemented by GCHQ with the aid of American defence giant Lockheed Martin and British IT firm Detica, which has close ties to the intelligence agencies.A group of over 300 internet service providers and telecommunications firms attempted to fight back over the radical plans, describing the proposals as an unwarranted invasion of people’s privacy.

Currently, any interception of a communication in Britain must be authorised by a warrant signed by the home secretary or a minister of equivalent rank. Only individuals who are the subject of police or security service investigations may be subject to surveillance.If the GCHQ’s MTI project is completed, black-box probes would be placed at critical traffic junctions with internet service providers and telephone companies, allowing eavesdroppers to instantly monitor the communications of every person in the country without the need for a warrant.Even if you believe GCHQ’s denial that it has any plans to create a huge monitoring system, the current law under the RIPA (the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act) allows hundreds of government agencies access to the records of every internet provider in the country.
If the plans go ahead, every internet user will be given a unique ID code and all their data will be stored in one place. Britain’s Foreign Secretary on Sunday insisted economic sanctions and negotiations had to be given a real chance to convince Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions.
William Hague made the comments in an interview with BBC1’s Andrew Marr Show, in which he warned that a nuclear-armed Iran would result in another cold war in the Middle East.They would either be attacked and there would be a war, or there would be a cold war in which Iran for the long term would be subject to these very intense economic sanctions and they would find that other nations in their region developed nuclear weapons,the British Guardian quoted Hague as having said in the interview.

However, he urged against military action, although he said it was not ruled out as an option.I don't think a wise thing at this moment is for Israel to launch a military attack on Iran, Hague said, adding, I think Israel like everyone else in the world should be giving a real chance to the approach we have adopted on very serious economic sanctions and economic pressure and the readiness to negotiate with Iran. That's what we need to make a success of.Hague admitted that Israel did not share its plans with Britain and added, We do not take any options off the table, we don't know how the situation will develop, it would be unwise to do that. But our approach is 100% diplomatically and economically focused to bring Iran to the negotiating table.Hague’s comments come after the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, also warned against an Israeli pre-emptive military strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities.In an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS to air on Sunday and of which portions were released Saturday, Dempsey said, I think it would be premature to exclusively decide that the time for a military action was upon us.He added that the economic sanctions and international cooperation that we’ve been able to gather around sanctions is beginning to have an effect. I think our diplomacy is having an effect and our preparedness.Fundamentally we have to be prepared and that includes, for the most part at this point, being prepared defensively.Dempsey said that the U.S. is of an opinion that the Iranian regime is a rational actor and it’s for that reason, I think, that we think the current path on Iran is the most prudent path at this point.The United States has been increasingly concerned that Israel may launch a military strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities. For this reason, Dempsey visited Israel last month and met with high-ranking officials on the issue. Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, recently said he has concerns there could be a military conflict with Iran over its disputed nuclear program.Asked if he feared Israel could launch an attack against Iran, Clegg said, Of course I worry that there will be a military conflict and that certain countries might seek to take matters into their own hands.

The reality is that he wants to slash American support for Israel’s critical defense.The facts are clear, it asserts.President Obama wants to weaken Israel’s security just when it needs it the most.It goes on to urge viewers to call President Obama at 202-456-1111, to implore him not to slash funding for Israel’s missile defense.RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks said, President Obama proposes slashing funds for military aid specifically for Israel’s missile defense program, a joint U.S.-Israel effort over many years. Iran’s Oil Ministry announced Sunday that it has stopped shipments to Britain and France, in retaliation for both countries’ support for boycotting Iranian exports. The European Union imposed sanctions on Iran last month.Iran’s Mehr news agency reported that the Oil Ministry had issued a warning to several other countries as well. EU nations were told to either order Iranian fuel now, or be cut off.The EU buys approximately 18% of Iran’s oil exports. The sanctions imposed last month included an oil embargo which was to begin in July.Iranian officials expressed defiance. We have our own customers and have no problem to sell and export our crude oil to new customers, Minister Ali Reza Nikzad-Rahbar said.Iran has responded to growing international pressure with bluster. Last week Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said his country would soon unveil big new nuclear developments, then revealed that 3,000 more centrifuges had been added to his country's uranium enrichment effort. On Saturday Iran sent warships into the Mediterranean Sea for the second time in two years.

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said on Saturday that the unity government he will enter with the Hamas terror organization will respect agreements signed by the PLO, AFP reported.The report cited the PA-based WAFA news agency which quoted Abbas as having said, The next government will remain committed to the obligations and agreements signed by the Palestine Liberation Organization. He was referring to the 1993 Oslo Accords signed between Israel and the PLO.Abbas recently signed an agreement in Qatar with Hamas’ politburo chief Khaled Mashaal. The agreement calls for Abbas to head an interim government, which will be made up of independent technocrats.Abbas’ comments drew an angry reaction from Hamas, whose spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri was quoted as having said they violate the agreements between Abbas and Mashaal.The remarks made by Abbas are rejected and violate the agreements because the next government is a national unity government. It is everyone's government, not one of a particular political group, Abu Zuhri qas quoted as having said.He added, The next government is a transitional government with clear duties... It has no political program.The agreement was recently slammed by Senior Hamas official Mahmoud al-Zahar, who said it was a mistake and criticized Mashaal for not having consulted anyone inside Hamas about it. Al-Zahar's comments seem to confirm recent analyses that the unity agreement with Fatah is causing a split within Hamas.

Meanwhile, with or without an agreement with Hamas, the PA’s prime minister Salam Fayyad admitted this week his administration is actively defying Israel and operating in eastern Jerusalem.The PA is continuously trying to allocate resources inside the city, which Israel occupied in 1967, Fayyad said in his weekly radio address from Ramallah.The Israeli government is trying to impose its policies to control Jerusalem and its institutions, which is contrary to international law and signed agreements,Fayyad said.This all won’t change the truth that East Jerusalem is the main part of the occupied Palestinian territories,Fayyad said in his weekly radio address, which focused on Israeli policy in the city.Israel must realize that there won’t be any chance of a long lasting peace without East Jerusalem as the capital of an independent Palestinian state,Fayyad said.Under the 1993 Oslo Accords, to which Fayyad's government is beholden, Israel retains both full administrative and security control of Jerusalem.
