Death toll passes 190 as storms ravage US south

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (AFP) – The worst storms to slam southern US states in years flattened buildings and overturned vehicles, with intense tornados and floods leaving a trail of destruction and 190 people dead.The severe weather killed 128 people in Alabama on Wednesday alone, authorities said, and President Barack Obama said Washington would be rushing assistance to the battered southeastern state.
States of emergency were declared in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and Oklahoma, and governors called out the National Guard to help with rescue and cleanup operations.The National Weather Service (NWS) had preliminary reports of more than 300 tornados since storms began Friday, including more than 130 on Wednesday alone.Alabama was especially badly hit, caught by two lines of storms and an evening tornado that tore through the city of Tuscaloosa, home to the University of Alabama.Tuscaloosa Mayor Walter Maddox told CNN that the tornado had obliterated blocks and blocks of his city, leaving 36 people dead there.Infrastructure has been absolutely devastated, he said early Thursday.When you look at this path of destruction, likely five to seven miles (eight to 11 kilometers) long and half a mile to a mile wide, I don't know how anyone survived,Maddox said.There are parts of this city I don't recognize.... This has been a very serious and deadly event that's affected our state, and it's not over yet,Alabama Governor Robert Brantley told reporters after the second string of storms.Stunned Birmingham residents assessed the damage early Thursday, some counting their blessings to still be alive, others distraught over the loss of their loved ones or homes.There were two-by-fours (wooden beams) falling out of the sky, convenience store manager Jack Welch said, adding that there were well over 30 homes destroyed just behind his store in Birmingham.Facilities manager John Filmore said he was grateful to be alive, as he walked up his front steps -- the only part of his home still intact after a tornado ripped it to its foundations.Some personal property swept up by the killer twisters was found 50 miles (80 kilometers) away, as power was knocked out in communities across the south.The Tuesday-Wednesday storms are believed to be the deadliest US natural disaster since Hurricane Katrina of 2005, and Accuweather.com said the tornados were the worst since 310 people were killed on April 3, 1974.The NWS issued a rare high-risk warning of tornados, hail, flash flooding and dangerous lightning for parts of Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi.It warned that severe weather could also strike 21 states from the Great Lakes down to the Gulf Coast and across to the Atlantic, and tornados were reported as far east as Virginia and Maryland. In Mississippi the storm killed 32 people and caused damage in 50 of its 82 counties, according to Greg Flynn at the state's emergency management agency.

He said most of the deaths and damage were caused by tornados and high winds. State officials reported 11 dead in Arkansas, 10 killed in Georgia, seven in Virginia, and another three killed in Missouri and Tennessee, with the overall toll likely to rise. Storm victims across the region were trapped in homes, trailers and cars by falling trees. Hail the size of golf balls cracked windows.Roads were washed out or rendered impassable by fallen trees and power lines across the region. Death toll at 25 in latest bout of storms

BIRMINGHAM, Ala (Reuters) – The death toll this week from tornadoes and severe storms pummeling the South rose to 25 people and the nasty weather is not yet over, emergency officials and weather forecasters said on Wednesday.Governors in Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee each declared a state of emergency, and in Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour declared a state of emergency for 39 counties.The latest casualties were in Louisiana and Tennessee.A woman in Chattanooga, Tennessee, was killed at about 3:30 p.m. when a tree fell on her mobile home, said police Sergeant Jerri Weary.Two people in Monroe, Louisiana, were believed to have drowned during heavy flooding early Wednesday, said police spokeswoman Tarra Smith.These were in addition to five deaths in Mississippi, six confirmed in Alabama and 11 fatalities in Arkansas during the latest round of spring storms.The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency revised the state's storm-related death count to five since Tuesday after one county amended its number. The state previously reported six deaths.Severe weather in Mississippi damaged homes, downed trees and power lines and sparked flash flooding.

One Mississippi death was a worker killed Wednesday in Yazoo County while removing a tree from a roadway, said spokesman Jeff Rent.National park service officials said a Covington, Louisiana, police officer died when a tree snapped and fell on his tent at a Choctaw County, Mississippi, campground. The man was shielding his daughter, who was not hurt.Alabama officials confirmed six fatalities as a result of the deadly weather that ripped through most of the state overnight.

POWER LINES SNAPPED

Winds of 100 miles per hour pounded central Alabama early Wednesday, snapping trees across power lines, roads and buildings, said Mark Kelly, spokesman for the Jefferson County Emergency Management Office.Approximately 245,000 customers were without power in the lower two-thirds of the state, said Alabama Power spokesman Michael Sznajderman.The central counties of Shelby and Jefferson, which includes the state's most populous city of Birmingham, had almost 150,000 households and businesses with outages.In one suburban Birmingham neighborhood, a family was briefly trapped inside their home by fallen trees.As I was grabbing my daughter and running to the closet, trees hit the house, said Lisa Hey, who estimated 90 percent of the trees in her neighborhood were uprooted.Several parts of north Texas, including areas which have been charred by the state's massive wildfires, also were pounded by tornadoes and severe thunderstorms Tuesday night.Numerous homes have been damaged or destroyed, said Lieutenant Chuck Allen, emergency management coordinator in Van Zandt County, located about halfway between Dallas and Tyler.Residents in Tennessee are coping with flooding, power outages and blocked roads. Twenty-six county school systems were closed on Wednesday, and the airport in Murfreesboro sustained damage.We've got pockets of trees down and localized flooding from west to east Tennessee,said Emergency Management Agency spokesman Dean Flener.

AccuWeather.com meteorologists said the Tennessee Valley will bear the brunt of tornadoes expected Wednesday.The worst of the storms are expected into the evening. The corridor from northern Mississippi and northern Alabama to southeastern Kentucky is likely to be the hardest hit, AccuWeather.com reported.A powerful storm system in that region could spawn large and long-tracking tornadoes, meteorologists said. If strong tornadoes like this hit any populated area, they could result in complete destruction,AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Heather Buchman said on the Web site.

FLOOD CONCERN

Floods remain a big concern in several states, where days of rain and the melted snow from the winter's heavy falls have caused rising rivers and saturated soils. A rural Missouri county was evacuating residents on Wednesday from a 130,000-acre area that will be flooded if the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers decides to intentionally breach a Mississippi River levee in an effort to keep the historic river town of Cairo, Illinois, from flooding.Flooding became more widespread in Arkansas on Wednesday after several days of intense storms. The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department reported numerous road closures, including the partial collapse of a highway near Harrison.Emergency officials in Tennessee are bracing for floods expected along the Mississippi River early next week.The storms and flooding are the latest in the violent weather that has pummeled much of the mid-South this month. Two weeks ago at least 47 people died as storms tore a wide path from Oklahoma all the way to North Carolina. The most recent of these surveys, taken last week, dealt only with nine countries – not including Israel, which was asked about in an earlier survey.The most recent findings show that Canada, Great Britain and Australia enjoy the greatest support among Americans in terms of willingness to come to their defense. Eighty percent said they would support coming to Canada’s support, 74% for Great Britain, and 65% for Australia. Next on the list was Israel, with 61%, as opposed to 26% who said they would oppose supporting Israelif it was attacked.The Bahamas and Panama each enjoy a 58% support rate among Americans in this regard.In general, Americans are not eager to send their sons to defend other countries. The US has a military defense treaty with Brazil, for instance, but only 33% of Americans say they would support going to its defense if it were attacked; 53% would oppose. Report: Abbas’ Holocaust-Denial Dissertation Widely-Taught in PA

Research by the Center for Near East Policy Research Center has found that the doctoral dissertation of PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas stars throughout the Palestinian Authority educational curriculum, and is the basis for Holocaust studies in the PA.
The Center’s Director, David Bedein, has asked Education Minister Gideon Saar and the government of Israel to demand that the PA remove the work from its school and from its curricula.Bedein wrote that the Center is engaged in preparing a movie on the PA educational system, in the course of which it tracks that which is taught in PA classrooms. Throughout the educational system of the PA,he wrote to Saar,we have found that the doctorate of Mahmoud Abbas stars, and forms the basis of PA Holocaust studies.Downgrades Number of Victims, Accuses Zionists of Collaboration
The doctorate was published as a book in 1984, entitled,The Other Side: the Secret Relationship Between Nazism and Zionism.It was completed in 1982 at a university in Communist Russia, and was defended at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It downgrades the number of Holocaust victims to [possibly] below one million,and accuses Zionist leaders of encouraging the persecution of Jews.He also denies that the gas chambers were used to murder Jews, quoting a scientific study to that effect by French Holocaust-denier Robert Faurisson.

Arab Upheavals to Boost Mideast Economies?

The wave of violent upheavals shaking the Arab world could eventually boost and revitalize the region's economies, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Wednesday.In the short term, however, the region's oil-importing economies - including Egypt, Tunisia and Syria - face a problematic rise in crude oil prices alongside a virtual standstill in tourism and foreign direct investment. According to the IMF's Regional Economic Outlook report, these developments raise the possibility of spreading unrest, sharply higher oil prices, and rising fiscal deficits.The oil-importing economies will grow by just 2.3% this year, the Washington-based body predicted. In Egypt, economic growth may drop from 5.1 percent last year to just 1.0 percent this year.However, in the longer term, the changes taking place in the region could provide a boost for its economies,the global economic body said. A more inclusive reform agenda that meets the population's demands by providing greater access to opportunity and more competition would make the economies more dynamic and leverage the region's inherent strengths.

Regional strong points, it explained, include a young labor force and a privileged geographic position at the crossroads between major markets in Europe and fast-growing emerging and developing economies in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.The IMF earlier this month revised its economic growth projection for the Middle East and North Africa region to 4.1% this year, down from a prediction of 4.6% growth made in January.The economies of Egypt and Tunisia will also suffer from the effects of the civil war in neighboring Libya, which is causing the return of more than 100,000 migrant workers to their homelands.The IMF urged Mideast leaders to create jobs for their population while tackling corruption. EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Syria is facing suspension of EU aid worth €130 million and a freeze on €1.3 billion in European investment funds as further details of sanctions under consideration by the bloc in response to the Arab government's bloody crackdown began to emerge on Wednesday (27 April).EU ambassadors are scheduled to meet on Friday to discuss how to up the pressure on the regime of Bashar al-Assad if the violence continues. Human rights activists say that some 400 people have been killed in the uprising.We are considering all options,said Michael Mann, the spokesman for EU's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton.Speaking to reporters, he added: It is not acceptable to fire on demonstrators,although he refused to discuss potential sanctions against Damascus.However, Ashton on Wednesday circulated a paper outlining possible options which, according to an EU official, include suspension of agreements with the country.The EU has quite a few programmes in partnership with the government, the source added.Details are being kept tightly guarded but a document released to journalists the same day gave a list of the EU aid funds in the frame beyond the usual things that have been imposed against other governments in the wider region involved in repression of pro-democracy forces, including asset freezes and travel bans.

The commission co-finances a number of investment programmes in Syria in concert with the European Investment Bank, whose portfolio exceeds €1.3 billion, the second largest EIB portfolio in the region after Egypt.In addition, since 2007, the EU has granted €80 million to assist with the influx of Iraqi refugees.The EU has a draft Association Agreement with Syria, which was signed on the Brussels side in October 2009. The Syrian signature is pending however as Damascus claims part of agreement will have negative impact on its socio-economic situation.The bloc also currently delivers an aid programme worth €129 million over the next three years, a sum that had been sharply hiked in the last year by 32 percent over the previous programming period.At the time of the funding announcement, the EU had marked in a document detailing how the aid was to be spent its backing for the thaw between Brussels and Damascus in previous years.This illustrates the EU's willingness to step up its support to advance Syria's reform agenda and provide adequate means to facilitate implementation of the Association Agreement upon its entry into force,the document read.This willingness for further support to Syria now appears to have been closed off.The €129 million aid sums aimed at supporting the transformation of the country to a social market economy, with funds for the development of renewable energy, strengthening of civil society organisations, rural development and administrative and economic reforms.Specifically, the programmes back fostering entrepreneurship, boosting use of solar and wind energy, promoting energy efficiency by industries and households and interconnection of regional electricity and gas markets.

The aid was also to target the poorest rural areas, notably the northeastern region - the most arid area of the country and which hit by drought for the last three years. The region is also home to most of the country's livestock. Combined with soaring global food prices, the droughts have severely affected socio-economic conditions there, according to the EU document.Funds are supplied to herders, poor and small-scale farmers and their families, aiming to improve the productivity of their land and mitigate drought impacts.Aid is also focussed on the introduction of efficient water management methods and increasing access to drinkable water.Other monies go toward efforts to push up the number of low-income families receiving social assistance benefits, update school curricula and teacher training and lower drop-out rates. The EU is the main international donor in the Syrian education sector.Dovetailing the EU discussion on Friday, the United Nations Human Rights Council is to hold a special session on Syria the same day.Ten EU member states, along with Japan, Mexico, Senegal, South Korea, the US and Zambia requested the UN meeting.Members of the UN Security Council have yet to back a statement on the crackdown but are due later on Wednesday to resume discussion on a declaration that would condemn the violence, call for restraint and back a UN investigation.UK foreign secretary William Hague on Tuesday said that it was not too late for al-Assad, and even as he threatened EU sanctions, kept the door open for the Syrian leader should he back down.Syria is now at a fork in the road. Its government can still choose to bring about the radical reform which alone can provide peace and stability in Syria and for the long term, and we urge it do so. Or it can choose ever more violent repression, which can only bring short term security for the authorities there. If it does so, we will work with our European partners and others to take measures, including sanctions, that will have an impact on the regime.EU states generally back a tougher line on Assad but there remain fears that whoever replaces the regime might strengthen Iran's position in the region.Diplomats are also keen to stress the distinction between the situation in Syria and Libya.Of course it's bad, but we are not anywhere near the scale of killings seen in Libya, said another EU official, We have to keep this in perspective.

France and Italy get backing for changes to EU border rules

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Several member states have indicated they are prepared to back attempts by France and Italy to make it easier for countries to re-instate border controls, following an influx of migrants from north Africa.Germany, the Netherlands, Greece and Malta have all given their blessing to Paris and Rome's call for adjustments to be made to the Schengen Agreement on passport-free travel within most of the EU, while underlining the importance of an open Europe.If you can improve the Schengen system then that is good and you should, German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle said Wednesday, reports AFP. But travel freedom in Europe is such an important achievement that it should not be up for renegotiation.In a parliamentary debate, Dutch Immigration Minister Gerd Leers said: I will resist those who call for simply re-instating border controls, for that goes against an open Europe, but I welcome the debate on how to strengthen and improve the Schengen rules to combat illegal immigration, especially in these times of turmoil.Malta and Greece stressed the need for other member states to show solidarity with southern rim EU countries. The tiny Mediterranean island of Malta is often a first port-of-call for migrants from Africa while Greece is struggling to secure its border with Turkey.I'm in favour of review providing it reduces the burden and does not make it heavier,said Tonio Borg, Malta's deputy prime minister.I hope the revision of the Schengen treaty will not mean creating walls and gates, but a move toward solidarity,he said.Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas said: Greece is open to a revision of Schengen, but that should help Mediterranean countries.Southern European countries have long complained that the rest of Europe is deaf to their complaints of struggling to cope with receiving immigrants.

The tension came to a head in recent weeks when Italy - having seen thousands of people, mainly Tunisians, reach its coast - decided to start granting temporary residence permits. Many of the migrants began to head to France, which reacted by closing its borders.In a meeting designed to calm tensions, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi Tuesday (26 April) issued a joint declaration calling for border controls to be re-introduced in exceptional circumstances.The European Commission has said it will define such exceptional situations and is expected to put forward proposals next week (4 May). EU officials have repeatedly stressed however that border controls will not be re-instated as a matter of routine.Most EU states as well as Norway, Switzerland and Iceland are signatories to the 1995 Schengen Agreement. Abolishing the internal border controls, except in cases of threats to national security, the agreement relies on trust between member states but this has been put to the test both by the recent immigration flows in the wake of the Arab Spring as well as the rise of far-right anti-immigration parties in several member states.

Donald Trump is really proud and really honored to have been the game changer in getting President Obama to finally release his long-form birth certificate on Wednesday morning.Trump said he was really honored to have really played to have played a really big role in hopefully, hopefully, getting rid of this issue.Touching down in New Hampshire for a few private meetings, Trump held a press conference at local airport to discuss the just-released documents. While he still needs to look at it,Trump said he hopes the release of the certificate will put to rest not just any debate about the President’s legitimacy but also the inquisition by journalists who have grilled Trump about his public remarks regarding the certificate.The real estate tycoon has used the birther issue as the launching pad of his most recent potential presidency bid. As journalists continuously harangue Trump, the issue launched him to the top of the polls of potential Republican candidates. In the past two weeks, Trump has fought back, asking journalists why they aren’t asking him questions on other policy areas.

Republicans prepared an agenda for the upcoming congressional session that begins Monday that includes hearings and floor votes focused on rising gas prices — an issue they think they can win on — and Wednesday’s document unveiling could throw a wrench in the GOP wheel.

She believes a large number of white Americans are racist.In order to trivialize the issue, the corporate media used a recent PPP poll to make it a Republican versus Democrat kind of thing. In the poll, 48% of registered Republican voters said Obama was not born in the U.S., while 26% said he was. Additionally, 26% said they were unsure,writes Jon Terbush for Talking Points Memo.The poll was conducted after billionaire Donald Trump raised the issue as part of his undeclared bid to replace Obama in 2012 — or maybe just grab the media spotlight like any other narcissist. Following up on the birth issue, Trump has demanded to see Obama’s college records. The Donald points out that Obama was a terrible student at Occidental and wonders how it is he went on to attend Columbia and then Harvard.

He was groomed by the elite to ultimately become president of the United States.Obama was selected for the presidency by top members of the Trilateral Commission, most notably Zbigniew Brzezinski, co-founder of the Trilateral Commission with top globalist David Rockefeller in 1973. Brzezinski was Obama’s foreign policy advisor prior to becoming an Oval Office seat warmer and accomplished teleprompter reader. Brzezinski taught at both Harvard and Columbia.Upon winning the rigged dog and pony show that passes for democratic elections in America, Obama wasted little time packing his administration with globalist and bankster operatives from the Trilateral Commission, the CFR, and Goldman Sachs.So-called conservatives and Glenn Beck acolytes like to say Obama was groomed by leftists and Muslim radicals.
