Forget Libya – Let’s talk real horror and murder under Sharia law
Posted on March 24, 2011 by LAURIE ROTH

While Obama plays fast and lose trying to deal with his upset liberal base and congress about going to war with Libya, real abuses, violations and murders are happening all over Muslim countries. What will Obama do about those? I imagine, he will continue to ignore them like everyone else does. I am talking about abuses, human rights violations and murders that affect hundreds of millions of Muslim women through out the Middle East on a daily basis because of the use of the evil and racist Sharia law.Just a few of the millions of rights violations regularly include: Get your puke bag ready. Remember Hena, the 14 year old girl who went out side her home at night to relieve herself in Bangladesh and was raped. She was sentenced to 100 lashes. She fell unconscious and died after 80. You guessed it…. Sharia law. Then there was a 16 year old raped by a 20 year old at her village. She was ashamed and scared so she didn’t report it. Her plan didn’t work because she became pregnant and was exposed. She was sentenced to 101 lashes. This was carried out 8 months after her rape…..another gift of Sharia Law. This very same district reported 3 other cases who were lashed for illegal intercourse.

The blessings of Sharia continue…………A 45 year old woman was whipped 40 times for having intercourse with her stepson. The local imam decided this punishment which killed her. Then there was the 17 year old who was accused of having an affair. She was tortured by the village arbitration council until she confessed. Naturally after that she was whipped 101 times. The gift that keeps on giving as we talk about the rights of freedom fighters in Libya. These encounters regarding rape and sex go on daily all over Muslim countries. We haven’t even talked about the regular beatings that occur, sanctioned by the imams and the Koran. Sharia not only is hateful and violates Muslim women, but calls for the execution of gays, execution of those who convert to another faith, cutting off of limbs and more. It is beyond brutal, discriminatory, evil and makes the rules of the Nazi party look mellow. Where are the REAL freedom fighters and leaders who will stand against this evil and for women??? Democrats where are you? Hillary Clinton, NOW, ACLU and other women’s rights groups are simply AWOL. Obama, Republican leaders, media, anyone??? Where was Bush on this? AWOL.I have screamed about these abuses for years on my radio show and in my articles. It is high time our leadership and someone in the White House screams about this. No one has the right to just pick little pockets of human rights problems while ignoring millions of Muslim women in a rape infested, Sharia sea of horror.

Israel wants EU help to scare off Hamas
ANDREW RETTMAN 24.03.2011 @ 20:02 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Israel wants the EU to tell Hamas that the international community would endorse Israeli military action against Gaza if it continues to fire rockets and mortars. The EU is very busy with the situation in Libya ... but it should become more aware of the escalating violence by Hamas and others. The EU must do what it can to make Hamas understand this is intolerable and that it will have consequences for Hamas which the EU will endorse, Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor told EUobserver by phone from Jerusalem on Thursday (24 March). We don't want to resort to a military deterrent but of course we will do anything we have to to protect our citizens, he added.Asked if he expects the EU to tell Hamas it would endorse a new military campaign against Gaza, Palmor said: What I'm saying is they must make Hamas understand that all options are on the table. The EU classifies Hamas as a terrorist entity and does not have official relations with it. But individual member states talk to it informally and the European Commission has financial leverage by, for example, paying for 30 percent of the fuel for Gaza's power plant.

Palmor's remarks come after five days of the worst violence since Israel's operation Cast Lead in 2009 killed between 1,200 and 1,400 people in Gaza, many of them militants, but also hundreds of civilians and children. The operation halted rocket strikes, but it saw Israel isolated on the world stage. The EU froze plans to upgrade diplomatic relations and 25 countries in the United Nations Human Rights Council endorsed a report accusing it of war crimes.Israel's deputy prime minister, Silvan Shalom, told national radio on Wednesday: We may have to consider a return to that operation. The culture minister, Limor Livnat, spoke of Operation Cast Lead 2.
Palmor said that Hamas picked a fight in order to raise its profile after its political rival, the Fatah government in the West Bank, recently gained prestige by securing recognition of Palestinian statehood by Uruguay. The Palestinian Authority's envoy to Brussels rejected the Israeli narrative.Leila Shahid said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is keen for a fight in order to block Hamas-Fatah reconciliation because he does not want the Middle East peace process to move forward. The Israeli government has used all this to sabotage the proposed visit of [Fatah] President Mahmoud Abbas [to Gaza],she said. The occupation of Gaza has been going on for 44 years. If Mr Palmor thinks he needs European pressure to stop the shooting, we want European pressure to end the occupation ... the problem isn't shelling on this or that day, it's 44 years of occupation, she added.

Reacting to the Shalom and Livnat Cast Lead 2 statements, she noted: This is very wrong, because Israel actually has the means to do it. I would be surprised if the world would allow Israel to get away with another Cast Lead.Pointing out that the UN did nothing to stop Israeli jets from bombing Gaza back in 2009, Shahid said: It shows how the world community, whether its the UN Security Council or the EU or the Americans, is silent and impotent in front of Israeli violations, when they have been quite effective on Libyan violations.

IDF Considers Deploying Iron Dome as of Sunday
by Elad Benari MAR 25,11

In the wake of the escalation of rocket attacks originating from Gaza towards southern Israel, the IDF is considering beginning to use the Iron Dome rocket defense system in the communities around Gaza already as of Sunday. The final decision on the matter is expected over the weekend, after the IDF assesses the situation and decides where, if at all, to place the two batteries of the system, whose purpose to provide protection against Kassam and Grad rockets fired from Gaza. Each battery can protect just one city. The Iron Dome system is designed to intercept short-range rockets with a relatively small warhead that are launched from a distance of 4.5 to 70 kilometers. Under certain conditions it could also be effective against mortar shells. In the present circumstances, the system would be able to protect a predetermined area with a size of 10X10 km from rockets and mortars. The system knows how to calculate the path of rockets and mortar shells and avoids shooting down those rockets that would be landing in open areas. Iron Dome is unable, however, to intercept objects that are fired from a distance of less than 4.5km.

Last month it was reported that Iron Dome is near completion. However, it has not been defined as operational, despite having recently passed a trial run by the Air Force after previously passing tests created by its designers. If it is indeed deployed as of Sunday, it would still be in what is defined as an experimental stage.
Meanwhile, the rocket attacks from Gaza continued on Thursday, hitting the Israeli port city of Ashdod as well as at other Jewish communities. One Grad Katyusha missile slammed into an open area in the city.By mid-afternoon, five rockets fired from Gaza had exploded in various parts of Israel's western Negev. A short-range Kassam rocket landed in an open field in the Eshkol Regional Council district at about 2:00 p.m. Shortly after noon, another Kassam slammed into an open area in the Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council district. Close to 11:00 a.m. a rocket from northern Gaza also landed in the Eshkol Regional Council district.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Space-Age Domes Could Protect Cities from Missiles -and Fallout
by David Lev MAR 24,11

Cities with domes on top of them are usually associated with science fiction, but one Israeli scientist – Professor Alexander Bolonkin – says they are feasible. Not only that – domes, made out of thin space-age film, reinforced with stones, pebbles, and concrete, can protect a city from nuclear fallout.A dome like that would be very useful in places like Japan, in the wake of the nuclear incidents the country has experienced. It could also be very useful in places like Sderot, a constant target for rockets fired by Gaza Arab terrorists. And, the dome could even guarantee a warm and pleasant environment, with cities protected from the ravages of nature, all year long.Far from being an oddball who has read one too many science fiction stories, Professor Bolonkin is a well respected scientist, who for many years worked extensively on the Russian space program. After he immigrated to the West in 1988, he was quickly snapped up by and NASA and the US Air Force research laboratories, based on his reputation for creatively solving issues faced by Russian astronauts. Now in Israel, Bolonkin is the chief scientist of the Strategic Solutions Technology Group, where he has been working on many ideas and projects that may radically change life as we know.

Among the projects Bolonkin has been working on is development of the field of Femtotechnology, which involves the manipulation of nuclear matter from nucleons (neutrons, protons), electrons, and other nuclear particles.Bolonkin calls the resulting material AB-Matter, a material that would have extraordinary properties - for example, extremely high levels of strength, stiffness, and hardness, the ability to stand extreme temperatures, superconductivity, supertransparency, zero friction, etc. Currently subatomic Femtotechnology is considered theoretical by most scientists – who are still getting used to the concepts of nanotechnology, which involves the manipulation of matter on the molecular or atomic level.Bolonkin, however, believes that development of AB-Matter is not theoretical; he has specific plans on how to do it, and once that's done, specific plans on what to do with it – namely, develop a thin film which could be quickly inflated to protect a city from all manner of death and destruction, from Kassam rockets to nuclear fallout. If such a dome had been deployed around the Fukushima nuclear plant, for example, the problems at the plant might have been more easily contained. The dome would not be all that expensive, says Bolonkin; certainly it would cost less than missile defense systems that are now in vogue, and the protective capability of the domes – which allow establishing a controlled environment inside – would more than pay for many projects, since it would allow the reclamation of desert areas, and the establishment of safe cities even close to hostile borders.

In the event of a fallout emergency, or in advance of a major attack, domes could be spread out over a community and quickly raised with an air pump. Domes could – and should – be constructed around dangerous and sensitive installations, like power plants, and, of course, nuclear reactors.Professor Bolonkin isn't just a world-famous scientist; he's also a hero refusenik, who in 1972 was sent to Siberia for 15 years for distributing the works of Andrei Sakharov and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, and for seeking to immigrate. He was released over a decade later. He has written hundreds of scientific manuscripts, and has patented 17 inventions, some of which are considered classified and are known only to U.S. space officials. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Space Agency, Chairman of the Space Flights section, and President of the International Association of Former Soviet Political Prisoners and Victims of the Communist Regime. The biggest dream of my life is to find and give people immortality, he said in a recent interview. I am glad that I managed to discover how this goal can be accomplished. I am glad even though it will not be until the generation of our children and the future generations that this can be actually realized.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Religious Zionism: Praise and Warnings
by Hillel Fendel MAR 25,11

While Religious Zionism celebrates its accomplishments, a former Knesset Member warns that it had better unite behind a religious authority if it does not want to disappear from the political arena.Education Minister Gideon Saar took part on Wednesday in a celebration of religious Zionism together with hundreds of students from yeshiva high schools and girls’ ulpanot. The occasion: A salute to the late Rabbi Moshe Tzvi Neriah and the volunteer youth organization established in his memory, L’Oro Nelekh (By His Light We Will Walk). The event took place in Wohl Hall in the rapidly-growing bastion of religious-Zionism, Givat Shmuel – opposite Ramat Gan and Bnei Brak, near Bar Ilan University.Participants included the widow and sons of Rabbi Neriah, well-known musical performers Yishai Lapidot, Dedi Graucher and Amir Benayoun, Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch, Ramat Gan Deputy Mayor Avihu Ben-Moshe, former MK Nissan Slomiansky and others. The late Rabbi Neriah founded the first yeshiva high school – Kfar HaRoeh, near Hadera – in 1939, and is considered the father of the knitted-yarmulke generation (now known as srugim). Kfar HaRoeh is named after Rabbi Avraham HaCohen Kook, the first modern-day Chief Rabbi of the Land of Israel, who had died four years before, in 1935, and whose teachings Rabbi Neriah promulgated.

Minister Saar was praised at the event for having allocated Education Ministry funding to L’Oro Nelekh and similar religious-Zionist educational projects. Delivering the keynote address, Saar began by saying that the recent terrorist attacks are the result of hatred and incitement to violence among the Palestinians… As long as they do not teach peace and tolerance, all of our talk with the PA leadership is worth nothing. In recent years, Saar said,Israeli society has gone towards emphasizing the individual – while real education means to see other people and help them; to give and not to demand. And therefore, when I saw the impressive list of activities of L’Oro Nelekh, I told them one word that I don’t usually like to say – and that is Kadima! (Onward!)[Kadima is also the name of the leading opposition political party – ed.]Relating to the national-religious stream in general, Minister Saar said, The path that Rabbi Neriah led, the path of religious-Zionism that sees the entirety of Israel from a public-spirited standpoint, has made religious-Zionism into a powerful engine in all walks of life in Israeli society – in education, academia, the army, settlement, and finance.

Yigal Bibi: Don't Join My Club
All is not roses for religious-Zionism, however. Yigal Bibi – who was a leading figure and Knesset Member in what used to be the National Religious Party – says that the religious public, including the Sephardic religious Shas party, must unify and stop its infighting. Otherwise, a lot of people will soon be joining my club – that of former Knesset Members.Bibi, a former mayor of Tiberias who now lives in Gush Etzion, says he foresees national elections within the year. One of my conditions for joining Shas was that all the forces in the religious public would unify. We must pray to be saved from the evil inclination of aggression and forcefulness...

Leading in All Fields - Except Politics
A religious party must have one spiritual leadership to which it adheres, Bibi said. Without a leader and without a path, religious Zionism will not get far. Today it leads in all fields – except for politics, and the best solution is to establish a spiritual leadership, and that leadership will find a political leader who has proven that he can get things done, comes with clean hands and does not seek luxuries, and will run with him as the leader of its political movement in the next elections.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

IMF Prepares For Threat To International Monetary System
Zero Hedge March 25, 2011

Back in April 2010, before Waddell and Reed sold a few shares of ES, effectively destroying the market on news that Europe was insolvent, we made the following observation: The IMF has just announced that it is expanding its New Arrangement to Borrow (NAB) multilateral facility from its existing $50 billion by a whopping $500 billion (SDR333.5 billion), to $550 billion. Little did we know that our conclusion something big must be coming would prove spot on just a month later after Greece, then Ireland, then Portgual, and soon Spain, Italy, Belgium, and pretty much all other European countries would topple like dominoes tethered together by a flawed monetary regime. Well, based on news from Dow Jones we can now safely predict the following: something bigger must be coming. As if the IMF’s trillions in open lending facilities (many of which have recently been adjusted to uncapped) were not enough, we now learn that the world lender of last resort (which in theory is the Fed, but apparently Bernanke has been getting a little shy lately so is offsetting his direct lending directives to secondary organizations like the IMF, leaving the Fed with only USD liquidity swaps) is about to activate a Special Funding Pool – Dow Jones explains: The International Monetary Fund is expected to soon activate a special funding pool that will boost the fund’s ability to prevent or resolve economic crises, two people familiar with the situation said Thursday. One of the people said the activation of the funding–which can only be made by a special request from the IMF managing director to the board–was in anticipation of an expected wave of new IMF programs, including the possible expansion of the Greek bailout package.Wonderful. Global financial cataclysm rinse repeat all over again…

More from Dow Jones:Activating access to the funding pool could provide assurance to the market of the IMF’s ability to backstop any major funding crisis amid ongoing fears that Europe’s sovereign debt woes will worsen. The IMF board recently approved a boost to the so-called New Arrangements To Borrow, bringing the special pool of funding to around $580 billion, adding several hundred billion dollars to the total amount the fund has to tap. According to the IMF, the pool of supplementary resources are only to be activated when needed to forestall or cope with a threat to the international monetary system.Although no request has been made, markets, analysts and economists say rejection by the Portuguese parliament Wednesday of a belt-tightening budget all but sealed the likelihood Lisbon will request aid from the IMF and the European Union.Bottom line: there is a new threat to the international monetary system which means Europe May 2010 redux is imminent.US taxpayers: our condolences.

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
3 Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

REVELATION 18:10,17,19

17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

FALSE TEACHERS,PROPHETS,DECIEVERS

MATTHEW 24:4-5,11,24-25
4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
25 Behold, I have told you before.

1 TIMOTHY 4:1-2
1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

MARK 13:22-23
22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.
23 But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.

2 TIMOTHY 3:13
13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

DEUTORONOMY 18:10-12
10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

JUDE 10-13
10 But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves.
11 Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.
12 These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;
13 Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

MATTHEW 10:32-33
32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me(JESUS) before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
33 But whosoever shall deny me (JESUS) before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

Pastor Fired After Backing New Rob Bell Book Questioning Hell
Posted on March 24, 2011 at 7:42am by Jonathon M. Seidl
Rev Chad Holtz, who was let go after backing Rob Bell's theology in Love Wins.

DURHAM, N.C. (The Blaze/AP) — When Chad Holtz lost his old belief in hell, he also lost his job.The pastor of a rural United Methodist church in North Carolina wrote a note on his Facebook page supporting a new book by Rob Bell, a prominent young evangelical pastor and critic of the traditional view of hell as a place of eternal torment for billions of damned souls. Two days later, Holtz was told complaints from church members prompted his dismissal from Marrow’s Chapel in Henderson.I think justice comes and judgment will happen, but I don’t think that means an eternity of torment, Holtz said. But I can understand why people in my church aren’t ready to leave that behind. It‘s something I’m still grappling with myself. The debate over Bell’s new book Love Wins has quickly spread across the evangelical precincts of the Internet, in part because of an eye-catching promotional video posted on YouTube.

Bell, the pastor of the 10,000-member Mars Hill Bible Church in Grand Rapids, Mich., lays out the premise of his book while the video cuts away to an artist’s hand mixing oil paints and pastels and applying them to a blank canvas. He describes going to a Christian art show where one of the pieces featured a quote by Mohandas Gandhi. Someone attached a note saying: Reality check: He’s in hell.Gandhi’s in hell? He is? And someone knows this for sure? Bell asks in the video. In the book, Bell criticizes the belief that a select number of Christians will spend eternity in the bliss of heaven while everyone else is tormented forever in hell.Rob Bell, author of Love Wins, questions traditional views of Heaven and hell. This is misguided and toxic and ultimately subverts the contagious spread of Jesus’ message of love, peace, forgiveness and joy that our world desperately needs to hear,he writes in the book.

For many traditional Christians, though, Bell’s new book sounds a lot like the old theological position of universalism – a heresy for many churches, teaching that everyone, regardless of religious belief, will ultimately be saved by God. And that, they argue, dangerously misleads people about the reality of the Christian faith.I just felt like on every page he‘s trying to say It’s OK,said Southern Baptist Seminary President Albert Mohler at a forum last week on Bell’s book held at the Louisville institution. And there’s a sense in which we desperately want to say that. But the question becomes, on what basis can we say that? Bell argues that hell has assumed an outsize importance in Christian teaching, considering the word itself only appears in the New Testament about 12 times, by his count. For a 1st-century Jewish rabbi, where you go when you die wasn’t the most pressing question, Bell told The Associated Press. The question was how can you enter into the shalom and peace of God right now, this day.Bell denies he’s a universalist, and his exact beliefs on what happens to people after death are hard to pin down, but he argues that such speculation distracts people from an urgent point. In his telling, hell is something freely chosen that already exists on earth, in everything from war to abusive relationships. The near-relish with which some Christians stress the torments of hell, Bell argues, keep many believers needlessly afraid of a loving God, and repel potential Christians who might otherwise be curious about the faith’s teachings.

Bell's book released last week.
The heart of the Christian story is that God is love, he said. But when you hear the word Christian, you don’t necessarily think Oh, sure, those are the people who don‘t stop talking about God’s love. Some other things would come to mind.About the only thing everyone agrees on is that this is not a new debate in Christianity. It stretches to antiquity, when Christianity was a persecuted sect in the Roman Empire, and the third century theologian Origen developed a theory that contemporary critics charged would mean that everyone, even the devil himself, would ultimately be saved. Church leaders eventually condemned ideas they attributed to Origen, but he has had a lasting influence across the Roman Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant traditions.
Those traditions often disagree, even internally, on what awaits souls after death. The Catholic Church, which has a formal process for identifying souls in heaven through canonization, pointedly refrains from saying that anyone is without a doubt in hell. Protestants reject the concept of purgatory, in which sins can be atoned for after death, but disagree on other questions. The lack of consensus is enabled partly by ambiguities in the Bible.Evangelical opposition to Bell is exemplified in a succinct tweet from prominent evangelical pastor John Piper: Farewell, Rob Bell.

Page Brooks, a professor at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, thinks Bell errs in a conception of a loving God that leaves out the divine attributes of justice and holiness. It’s love, but it’s a just love, Brooks said.God is love, but you have to understand you‘re a sinner and the only way to get around that is through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.Making his new belief public is both liberating and a little frightening for Holtz, even though his doubts about traditional doctrines on damnation began long before he heard about Rob Bell’s book.
A married Navy veteran with five children, Holtz spent years trying to reconcile his belief that Jesus Christ’s death on the cross redeemed the entire world with the idea that millions of people – including millions who had never even heard of Jesus –were suffering forever in hell.We do these somersaults to justify the monster god we believe in, he said. But confronting my own sinfulness, that’s when things started to topple for me. Am I really going to be saved just because I believe something, when all these good people in the world aren’t? Holtz plans to move to Tennessee, where he might plant a church. Gray Southern, United Methodist district superintendent for the part of North Carolina that includes Henderson, declined to discuss Holtz’s departure in detail, but said there was more to it than the online post about Rob Bell’s book. That’s between the church and him, Southern said.Church members had also been unhappy with Internet posts about subjects like gay marriage and the mix of religion and patriotism, Holtz said, and the hell post was probably the last straw. Holtz and his family plan to move back to Tennessee, where he’ll start a job and maybe plant a church. So long as we believe there’s a dividing point in eternity, we’re going to think in terms of us and them,he said. But when you believe God has saved everyone, the point is, you’re saved. Live like it.

Breach suspected at troubled Japanese power plant By SHINO YUASA and JEFF DONN, Associated Press - MAR 25,11 3:00PM

TOKYO – Two weeks after an earthquake and tsunami triggered a crisis at a nuclear plant, the government said Friday there is a suspected breach at a reactor — another setback that would mean radioactive contamination at the facility is more serious than once thought.Japanese leaders defended their decision not to evacuate people from a wider area around the plant, insisting they are safe if they stay indoors. But officials also said residents may want to voluntarily move to areas with better facilities, since supplies in the tsunami-devastated region are running short. The escalation in the nuclear plant crisis came as the death toll from the quake and tsunami passed the grim milestone of 10,000 on Friday. Across the battered northeast coast, hundreds of thousands of people whose homes were destroyed still have no power, no hot meals and, in many cases, no showers for 14 days. The uncertain nuclear situation again halted work at the Fukushima Dai-ichi complex, where authorities have been scrambling to stop the overheated facility from leaking dangerous radiation. Low levels of radiation have been seeping out since the March 11 quake and tsunami knocked out the plant's cooling system, but a breach could mean a much larger release of contaminants. The most likely consequence would be contamination of the groundwater.

The situation today at the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant is still very grave and serious. We must remain vigilant, a somber Prime Minister Naoto Kan said. We are not in a position where we can be optimistic. We must treat every development with the utmost care. The possible breach in the plant's Unit 3 might be a crack or a hole in the stainless steel chamber of the reactor core or in the spent fuel pool that's lined with several feet of reinforced concrete. The temperature and pressure inside the core, which holds the fuel rods, remained stable and was far lower than what would further melt the core.Suspicions of a possible breach were raised when two workers suffered skin burns after wading into water 10,000 times more radioactive than levels normally found in water in or around a reactor, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said.Water with equally high radiation levels was found in the Unit 1 reactor building, Tokyo Electric officials said. Water was also discovered in Units 2 and 4, and the company said it suspects that, too, is radioactive. It was not clear whether the water in each unit came from the same source, officials said, but acknowledged the discovery would delay work inside the plant.Friday marked two weeks to the day since the magnitude-9.0 quake triggered a tsunami that flattened cities along the northeastern coast. With the cleanup and recovery operations continuing and more than 17,400 listed as missing, the final number of dead was expected to surpass 18,000.Kan apologized to farmers and business owners for the toll the radiation has had on their livelihoods: Several countries have halted some food imports from areas near the plant after elevated levels of radiation were found in raw milk, seawater and 11 kinds of vegetables, including broccoli, cauliflower and turnips. He also thanked utility workers, firefighters and military personnel for risking their lives to cool the overheated facility.

The nuclear crisis has compounded the challenges faced by a nation already saddled with a humanitarian disaster. Much of the frigid northeast remains a scene of despair and devastation, with Japan struggling to feed and house hundreds of thousands of homeless survivors, clear away debris and bury the dead. It's still like I'm in a dream, said Tomohiko Abe, a 45-year-old machinist who was in the devastated coastal town of Onagawa trying to salvage any belongings he could from his ruined car. People say it's like a movie, but it's been worse than any movie I've ever seen.
Officials have evacuated residents within 12 miles (20 kilometers) of the plant and advised those up to 19 miles (30 kilometers) away to stay indoors to minimize exposure. The U.S. has recommended that people stay 50 miles (80 kilometers) away from the plant.Government spokesman Yukio Edano insisted that people living 12 to 20 miles (20 to 30 kilometers) from the plant should still be safe from radiation as long as they stay indoors. But since supplies are not being delivered to the area fast enough, he said it may be better for residents to voluntarily evacuate to places with better facilities. If the current situation is protracted and worsens, then we will not deny the possibility of (mandatory) evacuation, he said.Edano said the government will continue to revisit this and as we have done so, we will provide whatever advice as necessary. Safety is the priority.NISA spokesman Hidehiko Nishiyama said later that plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. was issued a very strong warning for safety violations and that a thorough review would be conducted once the situation stabilizes. A breach could mean a leak has been seeping for days, likely since the hydrogen explosion at Unit 3 on March 14. It's not clear if any of the contaminated water has run into the ground. Radiation readings for the air were not yet available for Friday, but detections in recent days have shown no significant spike.Elevated levels of radiation have turned up elsewhere, including the tap water in several areas of Japan. In Tokyo, tap water showed radiation levels two times higher than the government standard for infants, who are particularly vulnerable to cancer-causing radioactive iodine, officials said. The scare caused a run on bottled water in the capital, and Tokyo municipal officials are distributing it to families with babies.

Previous radioactive emissions have come from intentional efforts to vent small amounts of steam through valves to prevent the core from bursting. However, releases from a breach could allow uncontrolled quantities of radioactive contaminants to escape into the surrounding ground or air.Edano said safety measures may not be adequate and warned that may contribute to rising anxiety among people about how the disaster is being managed. We have to make sure that safety is secured for the people working in that area. We truly believe that is incumbent upon us,the chief Cabinet secretary told reporters.Meanwhile, damage to factories was taking its toll on the world's third-largest economy and creating a ripple effect felt worldwide.
Nissan Motor Co. said it may move part of its engine production line to the United States because of damage to a plant. The quake and tsunami are emerging as the world's most expensive natural disasters on record, wreaking up to $310 billion in damages, the government said. There is no doubt that we have immense economic and financial damage, Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda said. It will be our task how to recover from the damage. At Sendai's port, brand new Toyota cars lay crushed in piles. At the airport, flooded by the tsunami, U.S. Marines used bulldozers and shovels to shift wrecked cars that lay scattered like discarded toys.Still, there were examples of resilience, patience and fortitude across the region. In Soma, a hard-hit town along the Fukushima prefecture coast, rubble covered the block where Hiroshi Suzuki's home once stood. He watched as soldiers dug into mounds of timber had been neighbors' homes in search of bodies. Just three bodies have been pulled out.

I never expected to have to live through anything like this, he said mournfully. Suzuki is one of Soma's luckier residents, but the tsunami washed away the shop where he sold fish and seaweed. My business is gone. I don't think I will ever be able to recover, said Suzuki, 59.Still, he managed to find a bright side. The one good thing is the way everyone is pulling together and helping each other. No one is stealing or looting, he said.It makes me feel proud to be Japanese.Associated Press writers Elaine Kurtenbach, Tomoko A. Hosaka, Kristen Gelineau, Jean H. Lee in Tokyo; Jay Alabaster in Onagawa; Eric Talmadge in Soma; and Johnson Lai in Sendai contributed to this report.

Japanese Authorities Admit Deadly MOX Plutonium Reactor Is Leaking
Paul Joseph Watson Infowars.com March 25, 2011

http://www.infowars.com/japanese-authorities-admit-deadly-mox-plutonium-reactor-is-leaking/

While the mass media has all but dropped its interest in the Fukushima crisis to focus on Libya and meaningless side-issues like the death of Elizabeth Taylor, the nuclear nightmare only worsens, as Japanese authorities admit that reactor number 3, which is the only reactor to contain MOX plutonium, is now leaking.Japan’s nuclear regulator said one reactor core at the quake-damaged Fukushima Dai-Ichi power plant may be cracked and leaking radiation, reports Bloomberg. It’s very possible that there has been some kind of leak at the No. 3 reactor, Hidehiko Nishiyama, a spokesman at the Japan Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said in Tokyo today. While radioactive water at the unit most likely escaped from the reactor core, it also could have originated from spent fuel pools stored atop the reactor, he said.

The water now leaking from reactor number 3 has radiation levels 10,000 times above the level of normal reactor water. Yesterday, two Fukushima technicians received instant radioactive burns when they stepped in the puddle of water, as it burned right through their boots. The leakage of plutonium and uranium from reactor number 3 is the nightmare scenario that many experts predicted would turn the situation at Fukushima from a crisis to a catastrophe. The dire consequences of any major leak in reactor number 3 are exemplified by the fact that 4,000 tons of water have been dumped on the reactor, five times more than any of the other five units.Reactor number 3 runs on MOX or Mixed Oxide fuel, a mixture of plutonium and uranium. Plutonium is the most deadly radioactive isotope known to man, and MOX is two million times more deadly than normal enriched uranium. The Half-life of Plutonium-239 in MOX is 24,000 years and just a few milligrams of P-239 escaping in a smoke plume will contaminate soil for tens of thousands of years.

On March 14, reactor number 3 was hit with a massive explosion that sent debris hurtling hundreds of feet into the air in an orange fireball. Authorities claimed that the explosion was caused by a build up of hydrogen pressure and that the blast did not damage the reactor containment unit. Is the damage to the reactor only recent, or have the Japanese been covering up the leak for almost two weeks since the explosion? According to the Nuclear Information Resource Center (NIRS), In the event of such accidents (involving the accidental release of MOX), if the ICRP (International Commission on Radiological Protection) recommendations for general public exposure were adhered to, only about one mg of plutonium may be released from a MOX facility to the environment. As a comparison, in [sic] uranium fabrication facility, 2kg (2,000,000 mg) of uranium could be released in the same radiation exposure. In the case of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, the vast majority of the plutonium was not released during the explosion and subsequent fire.As part of the bizarre sweeping apathy that the mass media has cultivated over the last week surrounding the Fukushima crisis, the threat of MOX plutonium has been completely downplayed.Similarly, the longer the crisis drags on and the worse it gets, the less the media pays attention, despite disturbing reports of yellow rain now falling in Tokyo and surrounding areas. Just like the victims of Chernobyl, Japanese authorities are telling the people that the substance is merely pollen.Radiation emitted by the Fukushima reactors is already approaching Chernobyl levels.Iodine-131 is being released at daily levels 73 per cent of those seen after the 1986 disaster. The daily amount of caesium-137 released from Fukushima Daiichi is around 60 per cent of the amount released from Chernobyl, reports the New Scientist.

According to a new study by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), Nearly 25 years after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine, exposure to radioactive iodine-131(I-131, a radioactive isotope) from fallout may be responsible for thyroid cancers that are still occurring among people who lived in the Chernobyl area and were children or adolescents at the time of the accident.
Despite UN and World Health Organization studies that claim Chernobyl led to a maximum of 9,000 deaths and 200,000 cases of radiation sickness, more contemporary studies have shown that nearly a million people have been killed from cancers caused by the disaster over the course of the last 25 years.

Singapore finds radiation in some food from Japan
MAR 25,11 12:25AM

SINGAPORE – Singapore has detected radioactive contamination in vegetables grown near Japan's tsunami-damaged Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant. The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority said in a statement late Thursday that it found small levels of contamination in samples of Japanese mustard, parsley and two other plants imported from the prefectures of Tochigi, Ibaraki, Chiba and Ehime. The AVA said the levels of radioactive contamination were small enough that the short-term consumption of those foods wouldn't pose a health hazard. The AVA said it added food imports from Chiba and Ehime to a ban already in place on the sale of milk, milk products, fruits, vegetables, seafood and meat from Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochigi and Gunma prefectures.

Radiation injuries slow work at Japan's nuclear plant
By Yoko Kubota and Kazunori Takada – Thu Mar 24, 8:59 pm ET

TOKYO (Reuters) – Radiation injuries to three workers complicated the battle to control Japan's crippled nuclear plant on Friday and heightened global anxiety over the worst atomic crisis in 25 years.Hailed by Japanese as anonymous heroes braving unknown dangers, about 300 engineers have been working around the clock to stabilize the six-reactor Fukushima complex since an earthquake and tsunami struck two weeks ago.But they had to pull out of some parts of the complex, 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo, when three workers replacing a cable near reactor No. 3 were exposed to high contamination by standing in radioactive water on Thursday, officials said. Two were taken to hospital with possible radiation burns after the water seeped over their boots. We should try to avoid delays as much as possible, but we also need to ensure that the people working there are safe, said Japanese nuclear agency official Hidehiko Nishiyama.Safety fears at the plant and beyond -- radiation particles have been found as far away as Iceland -- are compounding Japan's worst crisis since World War Two.As well as causing the most serious nuclear accident since Chernobyl in 1986, the March 11 quake and ensuing tsunami left about 27,400 people dead or missing across the northeast.Despite increased radiation reports, fears of a catastrophic meltdown at the Fukushima plant are receding.

Two of the reactors are now regarded as safe in what is called a cold shutdown. Four remain volatile, emitting steam and smoke periodically, but work is advancing to restart water pumps needed to cool fuel rods inside those reactors. It's much more hopeful, said Tony Roulstone, a nuclear energy expert at Cambridge University. The most difficult thing is keeping the (spent-fuel) ponds cool, where they are using fire hoses.Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said the three injured workers were carrying radiation meters but ignored an alarm when it rang. Engineers would be briefed again on safety. They are working in a harsh environment, TEPCO official Akira Suzui said during an overnight briefing. The crisis has raised apprehension about nuclear power both in Japan and beyond, and the government of the world's third-largest economy plans to review the industry.Public confidence in nuclear power plants has greatly changed, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano, who has been the government's public face during the crisis, told Reuters. In light of that, we must first end this situation and then study (it) from a zero base. The Asian nation's 55 nuclear reactors provide about 30 percent of its electric power. The percentage had been expected to rise to 50 percent by 2030, among the highest in the world.

RADIATION FEARS

Heightened by widespread public ignorance of the technicalities of radiation, alarm has been spreading. Vegetable and milk shipments from the areas near the plant have been stopped, and Tokyo's 13 million residents were told this week not to give tap water to babies after contamination hit twice the safety level. But it dropped back to safe levels the next day, and the city governor cheerily drank water in front of cameras at a water purifying plant.Despite government reassurances and appeals for people not to panic, many shops saw bottled water flying off the shelves. Customers ask us for water. But there's nothing we can do, said Tokyo supermarket worker Masayoshi Kasahara. In the latest contamination finds, Kyodo news agency said radioactive caesium 1.8 times higher than the standard level was found in a leafy vegetable grown at a Tokyo research facility.Singapore said on Thursday it had found radioactive contaminants in four samples of vegetables from Japan.Earlier, Singapore and Australia joined the United States and Hong Kong in restricting food and milk imports from the zone. Many other nations have tightened screening.German shipping companies are avoiding Japan.

THINGS GETTING BETTER

The estimated $300 billion damage from the quake and tsunami is the world's costliest natural disaster, dwarfing Japan's 1995 Kobe quake and Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005.In Japan's north, more than a quarter of a million people are in shelters. Exhausted rescuers are still sifting through the wreckage of towns and villages, retrieving bodies and pulling out photos for the consolation of survivors.
Official numbers of dead and missing are revised up every day -- 9,811 people confirmed dead and 17,541 missing by Friday.Authorities are burying unidentified bodies in mass graves.Amid the suffering, though, there was a sense that Japan was turning the corner in its humanitarian crisis. Aid flowed to refugees, and phone, electricity, postal and bank services began returning to the north, albeit sometimes by makeshift means.Things are getting much better, said 57-year-old Tsutomu Hirayama, with his family at an evacuation center in Ofunato. For the first two or three days, we had only one rice ball and water for each meal. I thought, how long is this going to go on? Now we get lots of food, it's almost like luxury.(Additional reporting by Linda Sieg, Sumio Ito, Mayumi Negishi, Shinichi Saoshiro and Kiyoshi Takenaka in Tokyo, Yoko Nishikawa, Jon Herskovitz and Chisa Fujioka in northeast Japan; Writing by Robert Birsel and Andrew Cawthorne; Editing by John Chalmers)

President Obama fully and intentionally skirted the U.S. Constitution in illegally ordering the Pentagon to commence acts of war against Libya. In light of this fact President Obama’s orders to the U.S. military to execute these attacks in Libya constitutes an illegal order under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).
Members of the US Armed Forces who obey illegal orders are subject to criminal prosecution.Per the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ):

Section 16c(1)(c):
Lawfulness. A general order or regulation is lawful unless it is contrary to the Constitution, the laws of the United States, or lawful superior orders or for some other reason is beyond the authority of the official issuing it.

Section 14c(2)(a)(i):
Inference of lawfulness. A order requiring the performance of a military duty or act may be inferred to be lawful and it is disobeyed at the peril of the subordinate. This inference does not apply to a patently illegal order, such as one that directs the commission of a crime.

Such illegal orders are a crime as in war crime, an international war crime at that. These illegal orders can apply as war crimes in the International Court of Justice subjecting every member of the US Armed Forces, from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff down to the lowest ranking service member who carried out these orders, to trial and punishment outside of any American jurisdiction. The UCMJ allows for the disobedience of illegal orders because such orders constitute a crime, or be part of a criminal conspiracy, either under military, civilian or international law.
I urge both Republican and Democrat members of our House of Representatives and Senate to immediately begin impeachment proceedings against President Barack Hussein Obama II and to immediately direct our National Military Command Authority to halt all military operations against Libya.

NATO to police Libya no-fly, compromises on command
By Maria Golovnina and Michael Georgy - MAR 24,11 11PM

TRIPOLI (Reuters) – NATO said it would enforce a Libya no-fly zone but stopped short of taking full command of U.N.-backed military operations to protect civilians from forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.Coalition jets pounded targets in southern Libya on Thursday but failed to prevent government tanks re-entering the western city of Misrata, whose main hospital was besieged by armor and government snipers.Western commanders hope rebel forces in eastern Libya will overthrow Gaddafi, but the return of tanks to Misrata under cover of darkness highlighted the difficulties they face in trying to force the Libyan leader to cease fire.Rebels, who have set up an alternative government in their eastern stronghold in Benghazi, say they needed more ammunition and anti-tank weapons if they are to end Gaddafi's 41-year rule.We need arms and ammunition. This is our only problem, rebel military spokesman Colonel Ahmed Bani told a briefing.France, Britain and the United States have spearheaded enforcement of the Libya no-fly zone imposed last week by the U.N. Security Council, which authorized all necessary measures to protect Libyan civilians against Gaddafi's forces. But differences over the scope the U.N. resolution gave for military action against Gaddafi's army led to days of heated arguments within NATO about its role in the operation.Turkey had wanted to be able to use its NATO veto to limit military operations against Libyan infrastructure and avoid casualties among Muslim civilians from air raids.France argued NATO's command structure should run day-to-day military operations, leaving political control with an ad hoc steering group of coalition members, including the Arab League.

France believes having NATO in full charge would erode Arab support because of U.S. unpopularity in the Arab world. After four days of argument, NATO ambassadors in Brussels reached a deal of sorts. At this moment, there will still be a coalition operation and a NATO operation, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told reporters. The alliance's mandate did not extend beyond enforcing the U.N. arms embargo and no-fly zone, he said.NATO officials said a decision was expected on Sunday on whether to broaden the mandate to allow the organization to take command of all military operations and attack ground targets in the oil-producing country, in order to protect civilian areas threatened by Gaddafi's forces.Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had told reporters: The operation will be transferred completely to NATO and there will be a single command and control. The United States, embroiled in Iraq and Afghanistan, is keen to step back and play a supporting role in Libya, preserve alliance unity and maintain the support of Muslim countries for the U.N.-mandated intervention.U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said military planners had been authorized to take on the broader civilian protection mission and NATO was well suited to do so.The number of U.S. aircraft flying missions had dropped significantly as other nations increased their role, she said.U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, for his part, told the Security Council there was no evidence Tripoli was complying with U.N. resolutions. His special envoy to Libya had warned Gaddafi's government of possible additional measures if Libya failed to comply with the ceasefire demand.

AIR STRIKES

The Libyan government denies its army is conducting any offensive operations and says troops are only defending themselves when they come under attack. State television said Western jets struck military and residential areas of the capital Tripoli for a sixth straight night on Thursday, prompting bursts of anti-aircraft fire.Libya said the civilian death toll from five days of coalition air strikes had reached almost 100 and accused Western governments of fighting on the side of the rebels. The toll could not be independently verified.Western air strikes had earlier on Thursday destroyed government tanks outside Misrata, some 200 km (130 miles) east of Tripoli, but other tanks inside the city were not hit, a resident said.Gaddafi's tanks slipped back into the city on Thursday and shelled the area near the hospital, residents and rebels said.Government spokesman Mussa Ibrahim said Libyan forces were in control of the city of 300,000 people, with only a hard core of rebels holding out.But opposition spokesman Abdulbasset Abu Mzereiq said by telephone that rebels were still fighting there, and had killed 30 snipers who had been picking off civilians from rooftops in the town. Government warships had left the port.Rebels and besieging government forces continued to clash around the eastern frontline town of Ajdabiyah, said Abu Musab, who left the town by car with his family of 10.

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Nato has agreed to enforce the no-fly zone over Libya, while the role of a new 'political committee' to include Arab countries is to be determined in the following days. EU leaders have also agreed to adopt new oil and gas sanctions on Gaddafi. After four days of squabbles over whether or not Nato should take over military command of Operation Odyssey Dawn, the 28 member countries in Brussels on Thursday (24 March) agreed for the alliance to enforce the no-fly zone over Libya, Nato secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen announced. The Danish chief said the no-fly measure is part of the broad international effort to protect civilians against the attacks by the Gaddafi regime. The political committee will be like a Nato minus in the sense that it will include the nine Nato members in the coalition plus the two Arab countries taking part, an EU diplomat explained. It is to meet for the first time at foreign minister level in London on Tuesday.Speaking at an EU summit later the same evening, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said The coalition is principally a political one, while the command structure will be in the hands of Nato.Referring to a demand by Italy earlier this week that it should not simply hand over the keys to its airbases in Sicily but also host the operation headquarters, he added: The Nato machinery will co-ordinate through its headquarters in Naples.France was originally reluctant to give control to the alliance, saying there must be political co-ordination with the non-Nato Arab members of the coalition and that Arabs do not trust the Nato flag.

Noting on Thursday that the UAE had sent jets as well as Qatar, he underlined the extreme importance of Arab participation in the war effort so that Western coalition members cannot be accused of pursuing narrow interests in the oil-rich country. He said the Arab jets were in Crete and will be in Libyan airspace in the coming days.
Muslim power Turkey had also posed problems for the Nato handover, saying it did not approve of the conduct of the mission and that coalition air strikes had already gone too far.Speaking in Istanbul on Thursday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said I wish that those who only see oil, gold mines and underground treasures when they look in [Libya's] direction, would see the region through glasses of conscience from now on.The foreign ministers of the UK and the US, the two biggest champions of the Nato role, in a conference call with their Turkish counterpart managed to get Ankara on board, however. The EU summit conclusions on Thursday also agreed new sanctions to ensure that oil and gas revenues do not reach the Gaddafi regime. The oil embargo is likely to be imposed at UN Security Council level. The leaders said they would step up their humanitarian assistance to Libya and screen and refocus their aid programmes for the southern Mediterranean in light of the recent region-wide unrest. The European Investment Bank is to get another €1 billion in loan capacity for Arab countries undertaking political reform. But the extra money will be found without reducing operations in the EU eastern neighbours - a worry expressed by former Communist member states. On migrants fleeing the unrest - a hot topic for Italy and Malta - leaders tasked the EU commission with drafting a plan how to develop the capacities to manage migration and refugee flows ahead of the June summit. They promised to expand the Warsaw-based EU border control agency Frontex. They also agreed to give more resources to the Hermes mission at work with migrants on Italy's Lampedusa island.Sarkozy in his post-summit speech said that all of Europe is today on the same line on Gaddafi. But he remarked that the Cypriot leader had voiced strong worries, asking EU colleagues: How will it all end? How will it all end?

He encouraged members of Gaddafi's regime to defect to the rebels. But he explicitly ruled out sending ground troops to Libya and he spelled out that the mandate of UN Security Council 1973 authorising the air strikes will be fulfilled when Gaddafi's forces go back to their barracks and the population is no longer under threat. The cautious approach stood in contrast to Sarkozy's earlier statements that Gaddafi must go. It also stood in contrast to the more bullish tone of EU Council head Herman Van Rompuy who said on Thursday: The political objectives that we set two weeks ago remain unchanged: Gadaffi must go.

EU diplomats ponder if Syria next to fall
ANDREW RETTMAN 24.03.2011 @ 15:18 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU ambassadors in Damascus are preparing a report on the million dollar question of whether President Bashir al-Assad's regime will be next in line to fall in a popular uprising.A diplomatic contact said the deep, substantial analysis of the situation inside the country and its meaning for EU-Syria relations is to be ready next week. The union is unlikely to do anything beyond urging restraint until the heads of mission report is sent. Al-Assad (r) met Sarkozy in Paris in November (Photo: elysee.fr)One current view is that young Facebook-using protesters in Damascus are divorced from the tribal unrest in the south of the country. The line goes that al-Assad still has a window of opportunity to make reforms before the movements link up and a mass protest in the capital forces him to step aside or to go down the Gaddafi route of extreme violence.

Al-Assad's troops are believed to have gunned down between 15 and 100 people in and around the Jordanian border town of Daraa since last Friday. The Daraa protests began when tribal clans went on the streets to call for the release of 15 schoolchildren detained for writing Egypt and Tunisia revolution-inspired slogans on walls in the city. The children have been set free. But some 20,000 people went to the funeral of nine of the dead on Thursday (24 March), chanting anti-government slogans such as: The blood of martyrs is not spilt in waste. The situation in Damascus early on Thursday was calm, with students busy preparing for upcoming exams. Nadim Houry, a Beirut-based analyst for Human Rights Watch, said: It's very hard to know what's happening. When I call people in Daraa they say there are dead bodies lying in the streets. He added that Friday could be a key moment if people in the capital hold large-scale sympathy rallies after end-of-week prayers. For his part, Michel Koutouzis, a freelance security consultant who advises the European External Action Service and who has spent the past two months touring north Africa and the Middle East, believes there is a good chance al-Assad will fall.Yemen and Syria are the two hotspots right now [in terms of potential revolutions],he told EUobserver by phone on Thursday.

In Syria it's the bazaar, the middle classes, the traders and businessmen, who make the decisions and the middle classes are turning against him. If they rise up like in Egypt and al-Assad does not give the order to shoot in the first 48 hours it will be very difficult to stop, he explained.Al-Assad has the will to shoot people - three, five, 15, but not thousands. Things are different now compared to one month ago. This is something we won with the intervention in Libya ... the dictators in the rest of the Arab world now understand they don't have the possibility to freely gun down their own people. The Daraa violence has prompted condemnations by EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton and EU parliament president Jerzy Buzek. The US and EU governments have mostly kept silent on what is a strategic country in terms of Israeli security and the Iran nuclear dossier. But on Wednesday the French foreign ministry called for political reforms to be immediately initiated in Syria, in a sign that President Nicolas Sarkozy could be getting ready to come down on the side of protesters.Asked if the Daraa killings are a good enough reason for Sarkozy to tell al-Assad to step down, Koutouzis said: It's not the right moment. We are not yet at the moment of a popular revolution against the authorities in Syria. We are still at the beginning of the process.Close links between Paris and Damascus saw Sarkozy and al-Assad hold one-to-one talks in the Elysee palace in December in which Sarkozy reportedly told him not to meddle in Lebanon.

London also has good back-channels to Damascus. The specialist Paris-based publication Intelligence Online says that al-Assad spy chief Ali Mamlouk held a series of high-level meetings on counter-terrorism in the UK capital in November. Seventeen Syrian secret service officers then took part in a 45-day-long training scheme in Britain in December and January. A second secret service delegation went over for training in early 2011.EUOBSERVER TV / BRUSSELS (24 March 2011) - Finnish MEP Heidi Hautala, chair of the human rights subcommittee of the European Parliament, says the EU needs to be strong in condemning the suppression of peaceful demonstrators and criticise dictators that maintain a police state.

Euro-plus-pact agreed amid Portugal crisis
ANDREW WILLIS Today MAR 25,11 @ 02:36 CET

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU member states have bowed to last minute German demands on funding the future permanent bail-out mechanism, and indicated financial support will be available for crisis-stricken Portugal if necessary. Berlin's sudden change of heart this week over a previously-agreed funding schedule for the European Stability Mechanism had threatened to throw a spanner in EU leaders' efforts on Thursday's (24 March) to agree a package of measures to restore stability to the eurozone's wavering economy.Finance ministers had earlier agreed to pump €40 billion into the fund in 2013, plus a series of three smaller payments in subsequent years.
Despite initial objections from Spain and Italy, leaders have now agreed to five annual payments of €16 billion from 2013, placing less pressure on German public finances in 2013, an election year.We confirmed the operational features of the permanent stability mechanism. We will make sure that €500 billion is available with triple-A status, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy told journalists after the meeting. The ESM is will replace the EU's temporary bail-out fund, the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF), in 2013.A decision to increase the lending capacity of the temporary fund has been kicked to June at Helsinki's request however. The concession comes with the populist True Finns party running second in the polls ahead of elections on 17 April.

Eurozone leaders reached a deal on a pact of measures to ensure closure economic coordination a fortnight ago, with Van Rompuy branding the deal a 'euro-pus pact' on Thursday after six non-euro-using states - Denmark, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria and Romania - also agreed to sign up.In an earlier tweet, the European Council President said Malta and Cyprus would also join the euro-plus pact, despite the fact the two countries already use the single currency. Some 25 minutes later a correction popped up.The twitter trip-up is the second in as many summits. At the specially convened eurozone summit 15 days earlier Van Rompuy had to withdraw another tweet, replacing We have an agreement ... with the more cautious Agreement in principle ...Portugal's political meltdown on Thursday was the second economic talking point of the summit, with analysts predicting an international bail-out after Portugal's centre-left prime minister, Jose Socrates, resigned on Wednesday when deputies rejected his austerity package.European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, himself a former centre-right leader in the debt-ridden southern state, insisted the country would push ahead with plans to get its budget on track. He [Socrates] made it clear that ... whatever will be the next government, all the commitments in terms of the fiscal targets will be respected, Barroso told journalists. We expressed confidence in the capacity of Portugal to overcome the current situation and also its capacity to find the funding it may need in the months to come.

Gaza militants fire rockets deep into Israel
By ARON HELLER, Associated Press MAR 25,11 12:40AM

JERUSALEM – Palestinian militants in Gaza fired a new wave of rockets that landed deep inside Israel Thursday, defying Israeli retaliatory attacks and threats. As the violence threatened to escalate the day after a deadly Jerusalem bombing, Israel got a boost from the visiting U.S. defense chief, who said no country could tolerate the repugnant attacks on its soil.Police said Gaza militants fired 10 rockets and mortars toward Israel Thursday, including two rockets that exploded north of the city of Ashdod, a main Mediterranean port city about 20 miles (30 kilometers) north of Gaza — a first since Israel and Gaza's Hamas rulers reached an unofficial truce following a three-week war that ended in January 2009. Israeli airstrikes hit a number of Gaza targets in retaliation throughout the day.Neither side reported injuries or said they wanted a new fight. But the new hostilities could easily spin out of control, especially if civilian deaths mount.Wednesday's bombing killed a British tourist, and five members of a Jewish family were slain while they slept in a West Bank settlement earlier this month. Israel has blamed Palestinians for both attacks. Also this week, Israeli shelling killed three children and their uncle in Gaza. The army said it was targeting militants. The fighting in Gaza has been the fiercest since Israel went to war there to try to curb years of rocket attacks. The fierce three-week offensive killed some 1,400 Palestinians, including hundreds of civilians. Thirteen Israelis also died. The volatile border has remained largely calm since.

Israel says Hamas has used the lull to rearm with longer distance rockets that can reach as far as Tel Aviv, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) from Gaza.Defense Minister Ehud Barak blamed Hamas for the rocket fire and vowed to strike back.Israel will not tolerate these terror attacks and we will not allow terror to rise once again in the region, he said. His tough stance was backed by visiting U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who said that no sovereign state could tolerate rockets fired at its people.Israel, like all nations, has the right to self-defense and to bring to justice the perpetrators of these repugnant attacks, he said.Citing gag orders, Israeli security officials have said little about the investigations into Wednesday's bus stop bombing or the knife killings two weeks ago.Officials identified the victim of the Jerusalem bombing as Mary Jean Gardner, a 59-year-old British tourist who had been taking courses at Jerusalem's Hebrew University. In Washington, the State Department said five of the wounded were Americans, one of whom remains hospitalized. On Thursday President Barack Obama called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to offer condolences. The White House said Obama reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to Israel's security.Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said Jerusalem and southern Israel remained on a heightened state of alert.Israeli counterterrorism expert Boaz Ganor said the bombing and knifing attacks appeared to be individual initiatives, as opposed to the organized attacks by militant groups that Israel usually faces. The former usually kill fewer people, but are more difficult to stop, he added.Israeli intelligence is quite good in thwarting suicide attacks, he said. It may be less able to deal with local and personal attacks.

Israeli police officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the investigations, said that even if the attacks were individual acts, Israel believes Hamas guided and motivated the attackers. Yitzhak Reiter, a Mideast expert at the Hebrew University, said Islamist groups are currently seeking an alternative to suicide bombings, which largely backfired in the last decade by turning world opinion against them.Peace talks between Israel and Hamas' rival, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, collapsed after the 2008 war, reviving only briefly for three weeks in September 2010.Abbas, who rules on in the West Bank, has rejected violence and condemned Wednesday's bombing.Hamas, which violently wrested control of Gaza from Abbas loyalists in June 2007, sees the diplomatic standstill as proof that only an armed struggle will win the Palestinians a state.Josh Lederman contributed to this report from Jerusalem.
