There's good news for any extraterrestrials intercepting Earth's Internet and reading this article: the United Nations is expected to appoint a space ambassador to communicate with alien visitors to our planet. If you're an alien interested in speaking to a representative from this planet, or if you're a human who's currently being given the order, Take me to your leader, Malaysian astrophysicist Mazlan Othman is the person qualified to handle the job.Othman, the current head of the UN's Office for Outer Space Affairs (Unoosa), believes that new information, specifically the recent discoveries of several new planets orbiting other stars, increases the probability of the existence of extraterrestrial life, and this planet should have an action plan in place should such a visit occur. In a statement reported by the Telegraph, she said:The continued search for extraterrestrial communication, by several entities, sustains the hope that someday human kind will receive signals from extraterrestrials. When we do, we should have in place a coordinated response that takes into account all the sensitivities related to the subject. The UN is a ready-made mechanism for such coordination.Her colleagues agree that is she the best person for the space ambassador position. Space law expert at the UK Space Agency, Richard Crowther was quoted in the same Telegraph article as saying: Othman is absolutely the nearest thing we have to a take me to your leader person.Not only is she an expert in the area, but her approach is a more tolerant one than earlier ideas of handling extraterrestrial visitors. This is great news for the aliens because before Othman, the action plan called for the sterilization of alien species to protect the Earth against contamination.

But is a space ambassador really necessary? While there are many skeptics who believe aliens only exist in science fiction, there have been several recent events that leave you wondering if we're really all alone in this vast universe.Summer 2008 brought a wave of strange phenomena to the British. The Telegraph reported numerous UFO sightings in the country stretching from Liverpool to Dover and from Derby to Llanelli. Highlights included a police helicopter crew giving chase to a UFO in their aircraft; a group of Basingstoke witnesses watching a fleet of 12 orange UFO's that stayed in the sky for half an hour; and a Royal Navy aircraft engineer claiming to have watched a UFO for three minutes before it zoomed away. Though some of the summer 2008 sightings have been explained, many still remain a mystery today.2009 was also an active year for UFO activity above the UK. In March, what was supposed to be a scenic photograph of London revealed strange shapes in the sky above the UK capital. According to Telegraph reporter Sarah Knapton, the shapes, which looked like flying saucers from a science fiction film, were invisible to the photographer, Derek Burdon, when he originally shot the photo. It wasn't until after the film's development that he noticed the strange objects. Later in August, a strange shape in the sky was once again captured on film, this time by a camera owned by the BBC.

While things may have eased up in the UK extraterrestrially-speaking, 2010 hasn't been alien free. According to Xinhuanet News, on July 8, in eastern China, a UFO was detected over Hangzhou, capital of China's Zhejiang Province. The object created a disruption in air traffic, causing flights to be rerouted to other airports. The event is still unexplained, though further information is set to be released after an investigation.Given these occurrences, the idea of a space ambassador doesn't sound so terrible. While many people may think her job is one of the easiest on this planet, perhaps Mazlan Othman really does have her work cut out for her.

Opinion is divided about how future extraterrestrial visitors should be greeted. Under the Outer Space Treaty on 1967, which Unoosa oversees, UN members agreed to protect Earth against contamination by alien species by sterilising them. Mrs Othman is understood to support a more tolerant approach.But Professor Stephen Hawking has warned that alien interlopers should be treated with caution.He said: I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. The outcome for us would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.
