PHILADELPHIA – A suspicious package containing a toner cartridge with wires and powder was found during routine screening of cargo in the United Kingdom, prompting authorities to scour planes and a truck in the United States on Friday. Searches were done in Philadelphia, Newark, N.J., and New York City.During a basic security screening process in the United Kingdom, officials found a suspicious item on a cargo plane, according to a U.S. government official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation.U.K. officials discovered that a toner cartridge on the plane had been manipulated and found wires attached to it and white powder. Tests on the device came back negative for explosives, according to a law enforcement official who also spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the investigation.Concerns about the possibility of similar and potentially dangerous devices shipped elsewhere prompted officials to check other cargo headed to the U.S.

Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Kristin Lee says the planes in Philadelphia and Newark were being swept. The planes were moved away from terminal buildings so law enforcement officials could investigate.The Philadelphia jet belonged to UPS. A source with knowledge of the situation who was not authorized to speak said officials in Newark were examining a UPS package.In New York City, police responded to reports of a possible explosive in a UPS truck at the Queensboro Bridge, top NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said. Failed The Blue Mountains mayoral candidate Marshall Heatherington says he's going to launch a legal action against the town and Rogers Television for what he claims are discrepancies with Monday night's election results.Heatherington said Tuesday morning he's furious that he saw preliminary election results broadcast by Rogers Television during its election coverage that had him receiving more than 1,500 votes, only to discover the official results saw him place third with 218 votes.The police are on their way right now, Heatherington claimed in a phone interview with the E-B on Tuesday morning.This is bulls---, he added angrily. How could I go from 1,500 votes to 200 votes? I had more friends and relatives voting for me than that!

Heatherington said he's hired the Collingwood law firm of Shaw, McLellan and Ironside to represent him.What the hell am I supposed to do, he said.Throughout the campaign, Heatherington made allegations that his campaign was being sabotaged. At one point he claimed that pressure was being put on him to withdraw from the race. Later, he complained his signs were being stolen and filed a police report.Blue Mountains chief administrative officer Paul Graham indicated the municipality had no comment on Heatherington's allegations.
