An intriguing video has appeared on You Tube that appears to show a FDNY film crew being interviewed in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks by the the director of the FBI’s New York office, who has suspicions that one of the World Trade Center towers took a secondary hit before collapsing.The video appears to be part of NIST’s recent FOIA releases and therefore has not been seen before now.On first viewing it appears to be nothing special, just the horribly familiar scenes of dust and rubble from the aftermath of the attacks. However, it contains a stunning exchange between officials and firefighters.The action appears to be taking place immediately after the collapse of the South tower and before the collapse of the North tower.The film crew exits a building and make their way along the dust and debris littered streets.At around 2 mins 50, a man in a suit approaches the crew and announces himself as FBI, Barry Mawn.Mawn (pictured below with Rudy Giuliani) was at that time the director of the FBI’s New York office.Mawn then asks the FDNY crew a question in the form of a statement – That tower got a secondary hit? The firefighters respond by saying they are unsure but they heard a rumbling and ran for their lives as the tower then collapsed.The audio is difficult to hear but one of the firefighters then says he saw it blow right out the side of the building to which Mawn asks that was the plane right?.

The firefighter then states I don’t know if it was a plane or an explosion.As they continue their description of events the noise of a jet overhead interrupts them as people begin to panic. Someone, presumably another FBI agent shouts is that ours? to which Mawn replies yeah that should be ours.At this point a large gathering of suited individuals walks into view and a woman in the group yells go to city hall.
Mawn then asks where is the mayor?, from which it can be deduced that this group is affiliated with Rudy Giuliani and they are hurriedly leaving the scene.The woman leading the mayor’s group then curses at reporters telling them to get the f*** out of here.One commenter has speculated that the reporters are with Pat Dawson, the first NBC News correspondent to report from the scene of the attacks at the World Trade Center.

Watch the video:We have previously covered the fact that Giuliani and his group were warned that the South tower was about to collapse, before it happened. This video of them leaving the scene just after the collapse of the South tower dovetails directly with that information – another huge finding to emerge from the NIST video releases.
The video is a fascinating piece of evidence to be added to the hundreds of other accounts and descriptions of secondary explosions in and around the WTC on 9/11. This clearly indicates that the FBI believed that a secondary attack, aside from the use of air planes was under way.Indeed, this backs up previous evidence that the FBI’s initial working premise was that trucks packed with explosives aided the collapse of the twin towers. This fact was reported by USA today journalist Jack Kelly:The details were also covered by MSNBC’s Rick Sanchez, who also reported that officials strongly believed a van packed with explosives parked underneath the towers had contributed to their collapse.Barry Mawn has other intriguing connections to the events of 9/11. He was a close friend and associate of John O’ Neil, the former deputy director for the FBI who quit his job out of frustration that his investigations into Al Qaeda terrorist plots were being blocked. O’Neil became head of security for the World Trade Center on September 11th 2001. His body was discovered in the rubble after the attacks after he had helped people escape the towers before they collapsed.

Mawn was also the individual who explained to the media how police and the FBI found the passport of one of the alleged hijackers, Satam Al Suqami, in the rubble during a grid search of the area close to the World Trade Center.Mawn was later involved in the investigation of the Anthrax attacks, which he initially believed originated from US military sources. Mawn resigned from the FBI in March 2002 following the break down of this investigation.The information revealed in this short piece of footage once again goes to show that there is still masses of evidence regarding the 9/11 attack that we are yet to discover. It should encourage 9/11 researchers to continue to dig deeper and demand a new independent investigation.

If you feel the ground shaking under your feet; if the America you once knew seems to be changing daily; if you feel that you have less and less control over your life and the country is being governed from the top down, then you should take heed.

Someone is remoulding the world nearer his heart’s desire, and he has the biggest hammer in the world. If you want to understand Obama’s agenda, you need to peer into the Fabian Window.The Fabian Window is a beautiful, if sinister, thing. Although it currently hangs in London, it should be hanging in the White House, for the message in the window is an eerie reflection of what is happening in the United States before our very eyes.Built to commemorate the founding of the Fabian Socialist Society, the Fabian Window contains images that are clear, unapologetic and, as a friend of mine once said—brazen. It is one thing, as Lenin said, to howl like wolves in order to live among wolves; however it is quite another to advertise the fact that you are a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Yet, the socialists who constructed the window had no qualms about advertising the fact that they had a hidden (or not so hidden) agenda when it comes to reshaping the world.The window contains the image of two men—founders of the society—hammering the globe (from the top down no less) with sledgehammers—imposing their will on the world so to speak. They are not voting; they are not persuading; nor are they preaching to the masses. They are hammering the world with very big hammers. If imposing one’s will from the top down does not remind you of the current occupant of the White House, then you have been living in a cave for the past eight months. The Czar and his Commissars are imposing their will on America every day, ramming legislation down the collective throat of America—legislation that Congress itself does not even read. And we are paying hundreds of billions of dollars, ceding our personal freedom, and witnessing the centralization of power in the federal government to an extent never before seen since we declared independence from the last dictator to rule America over two centuries ago. Are we being governed from the ground up—by the consent of the people? Or, is someone imposing their will upon us—hammering us from above?

More ominous still—the wolf in sheep’s clothing. Amazingly, the Fabian Window contains an image—just above the fellows hammering the world—that is as clear as it is foreboding: the socialists are wolves in sheep’s clothing. I often wonder why they did not choose a less ignoble animal. What about a courageous lion? A proud bull? A vigilant hawk? A noble horse? No, they chose a wolf—a cunning, ravenous, devious, and scary critter—and cloaked him in a sheepskin. Why? Because, as Lenin taught, if you want to operate in a capitalist society you must disguise yourself. Put the sheepskin on and you can easily mingle with the flock. Until you decide to shed the skin and consume the flock. The most frightening thing about the image is that the socialists make no apology about being wolves and living among sheep.

Creeping socialism has pervaded our government. We can deny it, wish it were not so, and the captive media can dismiss the notion as right wing propaganda, but the truth is plain. Power is being consolidated daily in the central government—at the expense of the governed. The current occupants of the White House look and dress like capitalists and profess to believe in freedom—all the time hammering the world and remoudling it nearer their heart’s desire—which, of course, is the motto inscribed on the Fabian Window. Does it say, remould it nearer the will of the people? Or, remould it nearer the will of the voters? No, the socialist window commands them to: remould it nearer [their] heart’s desire. This should send chills down the spine of every freedom loving American. We should question what is in their hearts and the wisdom of giving them the hammers.Fast forward to the present day. Is someone pounding our world with a very big sledge hammer, imposing his will on the country? Or do we feel as if we have control over our lives? You be the judge:

—Obama tours the world apologizing for the greatest country on earth, which has given away more of its wealth and sent more of its young men and women to die for people in faraway countries than any other nation in history. Is he remoulding our history—about which we should be proud?

—Obama denigrates religion, covers up religious symbols when he speaks in churches, and proclaims that we are not a Christian nation. In fact, we are a Christian nation, but not exclusively so, and far more tolerant of all believers and disbelievers than the Arab countries from whom he courts favor. In those countries you may be maimed, banished or killed if you are not Muslim. Freedom of religion in those countries is but an empty phrase in constitutions that exalt Islam over all other religions. Is Obama remoulding our religious heritage?

—Obama fosters class envy by punishing those who create jobs and wealth, financing his grandiose programs—which we cannot afford—by taxing the wealthy (anyone making over $150,000?) and redistributing income. From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs sounds a lot like Obama’s economic philosophy. The only problem is that Karl Marx coined the motto. Is our economic system being remoulded nearer his heart’s desire?

—Obama stated in no uncertain terms that if they want to build [coal plants], they can, but it will bankrupt them [sic] and implicitly threatened any company that wanted to start a new coal-fired energy plant. Since when do Presidents brag about punishing such an important industry—one that furnishes the vast majority of the energy which heats and lights our homes and businesses? Since when did government become the enemy of capitalist enterprise? Should big government selectively punish some industries and take over others? Is he remoulding the relationship between industry and big government nearer his heart’s desire?

—Obama proposed the creation of a domestic security force. Hitler had them too—they were called the SA and the SS. To whom will they swear allegiance and why do we need them? We already have a domestic security force. We call them police. Is he remoulding the state’s police power nearer his heart’s desire? And to what end?

—Obama proposes a national health care system which will inevitably lead to the elimination of private health insurers, budget-induced rationing, cost overruns, congressionally-mandated premiums, charges, doctor salaries, and care. Is he remolding the private relationship between the doctor and patient? Is he seeking to consolidate life and death decision-making power in the federal government—soon to have access to everyone’s private health information when all our records are computerized?

—Obama rammed through the biggest spending bill in history—hundreds of billions spent through the TARP bill—and few, if any, of our elected representatives had any interest in reading it before voting to pass it. What do you call it when an elected body, ostensibly representative of the people, passes a bill without reading it—just because the Great Leader says so? Dictatorship. In effectively bypassing the legislative process altogether, imposing his will on Congress, and prevailing on them to pass this huge spending bill—just because he wanted them to—Obama has fundamentally remoulded our republican form of government nearer to his heart’s desire. When the day comes that a President of the United States can compel the Congress to spend hundreds of billions of dollars by passing a bill they never read, it is fair to ask: why a Congress at all? What is the need? We should simply ask what the President wants, and then pass it by acclamation—the way the Soviet Politburo used to do.

—Now we witness the health care debate in dozens of town hall meeting across the country. When people show up and vocalize their opinions—passionately at times—criticizing the administration’s proposed plan for national health care, Obama and his minions decry the citizens as NAZIs. They suggest that it is somehow disloyal, mean- spirited, or racist to disagree with, or criticize, the President. Just a few short months ago, we heard liberal politicians declare that dissent is the highest form of patriotism. Put simply, it all depends on whose ox is getting gored. When the Democrats and liberals were out of power, dissent (even mean spirited dissent suggesting President Bush should be killed or impeached) was applauded by the Left. Now that Obama the Secular has risen to power, dissent is not tolerated, but condemned as un-American. The Fourth Estate, which traditionally kept Presidential power in check, is now nothing more than a cheering section. Obama has remoulded the relationship between the press, the citizens and their government. The captive press now denounces criticism of the Great One as disloyal and unpatriotic. The thud of the sledgehammer is getting louder and more frequent every day. Those who care about the country and about individual freedoms should take heed of that sound. Those who worry about the unbridled power of the federal government would do well to study the Fabian Window. It should be installed in the White House; it is how the President sees the world. We have given him a very big hammer indeed. And he is using it to remould us in ways we could never have imagined. Starting in 2010, it is time to take his hammer away.

Already we are seeing the waves of illegal and shameful activity flowing around the country as the desperate and compromised left tries to steal an election. There are numerous tight races, many of which are draws across the country. These will be decided in just days now.In Washington state, (my state) the race between the extreme liberal, Patty Murray and Dino Rossi is a classic leftist horror show. Murray has been openly enlisting illegal aliens to canvass for votes in many neighborhoods. Dan Stein writes of this bold phenomena with people like Maria Gianni knocking on voter’s doors, even telling people she is an illegal alien. Various states are pushing to get illegal aliens the right to vote now, all out in the open. There is also a strong push by some to get folks who are in the long process of becoming a citizen, legal immigrants the right to vote now instead of waiting.What about the word US citizen do people not understand? What about law do they also not understand? The bottom line is that votes are so coveted that we see organized crime like activity each election, not enforcing REAL voter ID at voting locations, pushing and campaigning for millions of illegal alien votes, pushing for dead people, felons and others to vote and many times. Then there are the precious voter machines. Who controls them, is the voting data secure and do hackers get in and change things? Yes and Yes!

Already, Fox news reported that in Nevada, where the critical race between Harry Reid and Sharon Angle is a close one, many voters in Boulder City have complained that when they went to the polls and looked at their voting sheet on the computer screen, the ballot was already marked for Harry Reid. This didn’t happen once or twice but was reported several times. Now, in a state where a critical race is neck and neck and Sharon Angle is slightly ahead, isn’t it fascinating that Harry Reid, the liberal, is already marked on the voting page? Now, how many liberals are already listed on electronic voter pages all across the country? I thought it was horrifying and bad enough that so many felons, dead people and illegal aliens would vote, but as I have suspected all along, voting machines are also being manipulated and hacked into. I want to know, who is running these computers in every city and state. How is security being handled, have there been background checks and how in God’s green earth does Harry Reid’s name magically appear already written on the voter sheet again and again? Why aren’t we all on paper ballots?

In Arizona, illegal aliens, felons and multi-state residents are already voting unabated. Like so many states, Arizona offers the honor system for voter registration. This acts as a huge and safe invitation, regardless of any voting laws and restrictions in place, as a huge magnet for illegal alien, felon and multi-state voters. Who would know??? I believe it is a serious crime that this and other administrations have not made it a law by now to offer verified proof as to who voters really are, not easy to pretend, proof. Illegal aliens and felons have no right at all to vote, yet they are coveted and canvassed by the left for votes. This is not only a voter fraud and election manipulation issue but a national security issue in every sense.

Each week now on Thursdays I explore on my national radio show, www.therothshow.com, illegal alien and border security issues with editor and publisher, Michael Carlin, Editor of Century City News. He has an idea called the Why Not Plan that I haven’t heard before and quite like. Although he is open to putting illegal aliens on a potential path to citizenship, a form of amnesty, he talks boldly of the need, FIRST, to close the border, put our troops on the border and use real technology and communication with the Mexican Government to close it and stop the endless hemorrhaging, drug traffic, terrorist flow and other mystery people coming across. None of our Presidents seem to get this right. Obama doesn’t, Bush didn’t, on and on. We have to approach this very real, illegal alien challenge from a real and new perspective that includes, law, business, compassion, accountability and national security issues. One thing is for sure and then some. No one has the right to vote who is not a US citizen and who can’t really prove who they are in my opinion.Here the left wants illegal alien and felon votes but they can’t get it right with our military votes! This makes me angrier then almost anything in the election cycle. Even though congress put a law in place back in 2009 requiring county election officials to send out ballots to our military 45 days before Election Day. Even with this in place, a growing number of states did not send out their overseas absentee ballots on time for our military to vote. The Justice Department has apparently come down on New York, New Mexico and Nevada for not sending out the ballots on time. Washington was late as well.It is absolutely insane that we would entertain all kinds of mystery and illegal votes but screw over our brave and faithful military overseas. I could care less what the reason is state by state. It is 1000% unacceptable! These elections in just a few days are critical to our nation. We must right this ship and yes, we are going to be dealing with massive voter fraud, all kinds of mystery people voting, overseas military not getting their votes in on time, and mystery distortions and liberal names written on electronic voter forms. That means just one thing after no doubt endless law suits and legal actions, EVERYONE MUST VOTE AND VOTE LIKE YOUR COUNTRY AND LIFE DEPENDED ON IT.

Along with all the name calling and slander flinging by the left are the absurd heroic and persecution portrayals of Obama.Just this week we heard Harry Reid in a speech in Nevada comparing Obama to the Chilean Miners in his focus and heroism.It was like the Chilean miners, but he, being the man he is, rolled up his sleeves and said I am going to get us out of this hole, Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) said in Las Vegas on Sunday.Is Obama going to be compared to Mother Theresa next week? Obama is trying to paint a bigger than life movie action film for democrats and independents to respond to at the mid terms. In one of his recent mid term pitch talks he said the Empire is striking back.Think about this statement for a minute. Just what does the Empire’ mean in his mind? The empire is the people apparently, the scared, fearful, non objective people who are responding against him out of stress. That would explain our actions and his lowering poll numbers right?…..WRONG!Obama offers the nation absurd statements on the verge of the mid terms, Axelrod and Obama are promising more jobs next year, and warning people that the Empire is striking back. Darth Vader is not only back and very angry, but hundreds of millions of Darth Vaders are also mobilized and not happy. Obama can call us whatever he wants. We know the truth. Obama is the real Darth Vader and is trying to turn us into an evil empire. We aren’t the empire at all, he, his czars, progressive leftists and congress are.

The American people will rise up at the mid terms however and stop the Obama empire’s movement and plans. They can talk all they want about the fear, stress and crisis type reactions of the American people but it won’t matter now. We will do what we have to do to fix and save our country, bring back our freedom and way of life. Nothing this President and congress has stood for and campaigned for has defended our constitution, Judeo-Christian values and freedoms. Obama has instead attacked and challenged them all.Pick your movie and battle Obama. If you need us to be the empire striking back, the tornado that lifts up Dorothy’s house and places it in Oz, or the stars of that classic movie Ground hog day where everything repeats itself each day, consider it done. Nevada voting machines automatically checking Harry Reid's name; voting machine technicians are SEIU members By: Mark Hemingway Commentary Staff Writer

Clark County is where three quarters of Nevada's residents and live and where Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's son Rory is a county commissioner. Rory is also a Democratic candidate for governor.Since early voting started, there have been credible reports that voting machines in Clark County, Nevada are automatically checking Harry Reid's name on the ballot:Voter Joyce Ferrara said when they went to vote for Republican Sharron Angle, her Democratic opponent, Sen. Harry Reid's name was already checked.Ferrara said she wasn't alone in her voting experience. She said her husband and several others voting at the same time all had the same thing happen.

Something's not right, Ferrara said. One person that's a fluke. Two, that's strange. But several within a five minute period of time -- that's wrong.Clark County Registrar of Voters Larry Lomax said there is no voter fraud, although the issues do come up because the touch-screens are sensitive. For that reason, a person may not want to have their fingers linger too long on the screen after they make a selection at any time.Now there's absolutely no independently verified evidence of chicanery with the voting machines (yet), but it is worth noting that the voting machine technicians in Clark County are members of the Service Employees International Union. The SEIU spent $63 million in elections in 2008 and is planning on spending $44 million more this election cycle -- nearly all of that on Democrats. White House political director Patrick Gaspard is formerly the SEIU's top lobbyist, and former SEIU president Andy Stern was the most frequent visitor to the White House last year.

Just in Nevada, the SEIU has given a lot to groups that are heavily vested in the state -- in just one prominent example, the SEIU gave $500,000 to the Patriot Majority PAC, which has spent $1.3 million against Reid's opponent Sharron Angle. They've and have dropped large sums directly on candidates:

NV-3 Dina Titus (D) Support $344,984.00

NV-Senate Sharron E. Angle (R)Oppose $225,000.00

Now the county voting technicians aren't unique here -- many of Clark County's employees are also represented by the SEIU. But it is worth mentioning, the SEIU is hyperpoliticized and has seen its fair share of corruption. (It certainly seems more questionable than Diebold, the voting machine manufacturer with Republican ties that was at the center of many conspiracy theories on the left during the Bush administration.)Unions increasingly have a major financial stake in election outcomes, both as a matter of their own election expenditures, and as a function of what they stand to gain if their legislative agenda is enacted. Should they really be responsible for tabulating the votes? That's certainly something voters ought to think long and hard about.Below is Clark County's SEIU contract -- On Page 75, in Appendix A, voting machine technicians are listed as positions represented by SEIU.

Lauren Booth Converts to Islam After Holy Experience

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s sister-in-law, Lauren Booth, has converted to Islam after a trip to Iran.The 43-year-old broadcast journalist, who works for Iran’s English-language Press TV, said she had a holy experience while visiting the Fatima al-Masumeh shrine in the city of Qom, a shot of spiritual morphine.Upon her return to Britain, she told British publication The Mail in an interview published Sunday that she decided to immediately convert to Islam.Now I don’t eat pork and I read the Koran every day. I’m on page 60, she told the publication. I also haven’t had a drink in 45 days, the longest period in 25 years.

Booth added that she now wears the hijab (hair covering) when she leaves her home, prays five times a day and visits the local mosque when I can.Booth spent several months in Gaza two years ago after traveling there illegally on a Free Gaza ship that symbolically broke Israel’s blockade of the region.After Israel allowed the vessel to dock in Gaza port, Booth was unable to leave, since she had no visa or other legal transport papers with which to enter Israel from the region. Nor was she able to leave via the Rafiah Crossing, since the group had no legitimate exit visa, since Gaza is not a sovereign nation – nor a visa for entry into Egypt.

Booth, who is a half-sister to Blair’s wife, Cherie, said she hopes her conversion to Islam will help change her brother-in-law’s presumptions about the Muslim faith.

BETHLEHEM, West Bank – The Palestinian government announced Monday it is planning an ambitious restoration project for the ancient church that marks the traditional birthplace of Jesus, an important Christian site that draws millions of visitors.The renovation of Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity is expected to take several years and millions of dollars, according to Ziad Bandak, an official overseeing the restoration.Bandak said this is the first comprehensive restoration project on the church since it was completed in the fourth century. He said the roof, pillars and mosaics in the church all need work.Rain leaking in has caused great damage to all of those, which led us to move quickly to repair the damage, Bandak said, adding that the project would also aim to fix general wear and tear on the centuries-old church.The fortress-like church, built in the classic style with a long central area under a basilica lined with columns on both sides, is dark and damp. The main Christmas event, the Midnight Mass, is celebrated in the 19th century St. Catherine's Church next door to the Church of the Nativity.The Palestinian government has appealed to European and Arab nations to help fund the project, Bandak said. He said the three churches that administer sections of the church have agreed to the project. Officials from the Latin, Greek and Armenian churches could not be reached for comment. Their rivalries have often led to fistfights between monks at the holy site.

Bethlehem was once the site of frequent battles between the Israeli military and Palestinian militants, but a drop in violence in recent years has boosted tourism to the town.Foreign and local worshippers pack the old church at Christmas. As many as 2 million people visit the church every year, according to Palestinian Tourism Minister Khouloud Daibes.The restoration won't hinder tourism and pilgrimage and worshipping in the church. Visitors and pilgrims are always welcome to visit the church in all phases of the restoration, she said.On Monday, the church was littered with building materials as workers assessed the scope of needed repairs.A group of Italian artisans hovered over one of the church's mosaics, studying the tiny stones.

BETHLEHEM, West Bank – The Palestinian president said Monday that Israel has been taking unilateral steps for decades by building settlements, so the Palestinians might take one of their own — asking the United Nations to recognize their independent state.President Mahmoud Abbas was replying to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said the only path to peace is negotiations. The threat of unilateral action indicates the depth of the crisis over peace talks restarted just last month by President Barack Obama.Israeli settlements in the West Bank are at the heart of the current stalemate. Netanyahu imposed a 10-month halt to new construction in settlements last November to bring Palestinians back to the table. But it took nine months of intensive U.S. mediation to restart direct talks.

Netanyahu faced stiff opposition to the building restrictions from inside his government and said he would not renew the measure, which expired Sept. 26. Construction has begun on more than 500 new homes since then, according to settler officials and a count by The Associated Press.Palestinians insist they will not hold talks while settlement construction continues. They have been suggesting recently that they would seek other solutions if the talks fail.One possibility would be asking the United Nations to recognize a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, territories Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war.That would not dislodge the Israeli military from the West Bank, dismantle the 120 Jewish settlements there or give Palestinians free access to east Jerusalem. But it could isolate Israel and change the diplomatic equation.

On Sunday, Netanyahu criticized this idea.I think any attempt to circumvent it by going to international bodies isn't realistic and won't advance true peacemaking in any way, Netanyahu said. Peace will be achieved only through direct talks.During a visit to Bethlehem on Monday, Abbas responded that Israel has been taking unilateral measures in the West Bank for decades — especially by building settlements.
Settlements are a unilateral step done by Israel, Abbas said. Is there anything clearer than settlements and invasions and roadblocks and all that has been done on Palestinian land? JERUSALEM – A senior settler official says that work has begun on up to 600 new homes in West Bank settlements since Israel lifted its curb on such construction Sept. 26, mirroring recent findings by The Associated Press and the Israeli watchdog Peace Now.Foundations are already being dug for at least 350 apartments, while construction of another 200 to 250 homes is in more preliminary stages, the official said Sunday. A second settler official said he believes some of the construction is already more advanced, and that out of the total being built, 400 to 500 apartments have reached the stage of foundation work.Both officials are familiar with the construction and spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to release figures on the delicate topic — which has stalled U.S.-led peace talks and brought significant pressure on all sides to find a diplomatic solution.Assessing the extent of post-freeze construction is difficult because Israel's government has declined to release information, and settlement officials generally won't provide detailed data.Peace Now, which is conducting an extensive survey of building activity, has reported that work has begun on at least 600 new homes since restrictions — which Israel self-imposed in November 2009 for a predefined 10-month period — were lifted.

The AP count found that — as of early last week, about three weeks after the settlement curbs expired — work had begun on at least 544 apartments, including infrastructure, leveling ground and digging foundations.The count was based on visits to 16 settlements and interviews with several settlement mayors who were asked about housing starts in their areas, but did not always elaborate on the stages of construction.The building spurt of the past weeks — whatever its exact extent — compares to a total of just under 1,900 settlement housing starts in all of 2009, or 36 per week, as reported by the government. Comparing cases where foundations are being dug only, the figure of 500 in recent weeks would be about three and a half times the previous pace.Peace Now researcher Hagit Ofran said she estimates that the pace is at least two and up to four times faster than before.
Part of the difficulty in nailing down the comparison to official data is that the government provides only delayed and periodic updates and does not start counting until construction progresses from leveling land to digging foundations.Ofran said she believes construction tends to proceed very quickly these days from preliminary stages to foundation work because settlers and contractors are concerned about the possibility of a renewed freeze.When building restrictions were imposed last November, contractors were allowed to continue building settlement houses whose foundations had already been poured. In this way — with the addition of allowing exceptions to the freeze on new starts — construction actually proceeded at a fairly brisk rate throughout the moratorium.Ofran said that during the moratorium, settlers had prepared well for the resumption of construction. It is not a surprise, because we knew this was coming, she said of the building spurt. Unless the government imposes a freeze, the settlers will continue to build.

Cyclone kills 27 in western Myanmar; 15 missing

YANGON, Myanmar – A cyclone that struck Myanmar's western coast late last week killed at least 27 people, damaging thousands of buildings and displacing tens of thousands of people, state television reported Monday.Cyclone Giri arrived from the Bay of Bengal on Friday evening with winds of up to 110 mph (180 kph), lashing several coastal areas of western Rakhine state that are home to poor families who live mostly in bamboo huts. It later moved into central Myanmar.Monday's report was the first announcement from the government on casualties and damage from the category 4 storm. The military government tightly controls information and also delayed reporting on — and asking for help with — the devastating Cyclone Nargis, which struck Myanmar in 2008, killing 130,000 people. The junta was widely criticized for what were called inadequate preparations and a slow response to the disaster.This time, the government credited its preparation and warning system with saving lives, saying the casualty toll was low because it had managed to help 53,000 villagers evacuate before the storm.In one coastal town in the country's center, Kyaukphyu, three camps set up by the Myanmar Red Cross and the Social Welfare Ministry were housing more than 5,000 people, said Andrew Kirkwood, the resident representative of aid group Save the Children.

A resident from Kyaukphyu, Chit Chit, who was contacted by phone, said that many homes had their roofs blown off and that many areas remained flooded. She said communications were cut over the weekend but had been restored.Other nearby towns also saw most of the buildings flattened, Kirkwood said. In one, only seven homes out of several hundred remained standing.The television report said that, in all, 4,000 houses, monasteries and government buildings were destroyed in Rakhine state. It said 27 people had been killed and 15 were missing.

Richard nears Gulf of Mexico, no threat to U.S. oil

CANCUN, Mexico (Reuters) – Tropical Storm Richard weakened to a tropical depression on Monday as it moved across southern Mexico and headed for the Bay of Campeche, but did not look to pose a major threat to Mexican or U.S. oil operations.The storm is expected on Tuesday to pass near the platforms that produce the bulk of Mexico's 2.6 million barrels per day of crude oil, but state oil monopoly Pemex said it was only taking the usual precautions and all operations were normal.Most forecasting models suggest Richard will dissipate before nearing major oil and gas installations in the U.S. Gulf, and even if the storm did not fizzle out it would likely be too weak to disrupt any output.When Richard emerges into the Gulf, it should be a very weak cyclone, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.The official forecast shows Richard becoming a remnant low in a day or so, but this event could very well occur sooner, the center said in a statement.

Richard dumped moderate rains in the Caribbean resort city of Cancun, and Mexican authorities reported no injuries or major damage.About 200 villagers returned home after relocating to shelters over the weekend, local authorities said.The storm made landfall on Sunday just south of Belize City, blowing roofs off houses and knocking out electricity as tourists and residents huddled in emergency shelters.The government of Belize reported no injuries or deaths from Richard, which came ashore as a Category 1 hurricane, the lowest on the five-step Saffir-Simpson intensity scale.The weakening storm had maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour, was located 55 miles southeast of the Mexican port of Ciudad del Carmen, and was moving west-northwest at 9 mph, the Miami-based center said.Richard is expected to produce 1 to 2 inches of rain across northern Guatemala and the Mexican states of Quintana Roo and Campeche, the hurricane center said.Hurricanes occasionally pass over the Yucatan Peninsula and can disrupt Mexican oil operations.In September, Hurricane Karl forced a brief shutdown of 14 minor Mexican wells in the Gulf, with no significant impact on production.Guatemalan authorities reported no significant damage or casualties due to the storm, and the head of the country's coffee growers' association said the crop would probably not be affected.Richard was the 10th hurricane of the busy 2010 Atlantic storm season, which has experienced five major storms. Nigeria cholera death toll rises above 1,500: U.N.

LAGOS (Reuters) – Cholera has killed more than 1,500 people in Nigeria since January in one of the worst outbreaks in years, with heavy rains spreading the disease particularly in poor northern states, the United Nations said on Monday.According to U.N. figures, 1,555 people have died from the disease in Africa's most populous nation since January while 38,173 cases have been reported, Martin Dawes, regional spokesman for the U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF) told Reuters.The figure is more than four times the death toll reported by the government in August. U.N. officials said the numbers were based on the latest reports from the World Health Organization, Red Cross and government agencies.The rains this year have been very severe ... PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – A cholera outbreak showed signs of easing Monday after killing more than 250 people in a sweep through rural Haiti, but experts warned that the earthquake-devastated country's first bout with the disease in decades is far from over.Aid groups were joining the government in a race to purify water and warn people throughout the countryside and the capital, Port-au-Prince, where the Jan. 12 earthquake left more than a million survivors in squalid stick-and-tarp camps that are ripe for the waterborne disease.The worst part is over, but you can always have a new spike of cholera, said Health Ministry Director Gabriel Timothee. He said the situation is beginning to stabilize with only six new deaths reported since Sunday.

Haiti, which had not suffered a cholera outbreak in at least 50 years, is the latest developing country to be afflicted by the disease that sickens an estimated 3 million to 5 million people a year and kills 100,000.It is common in regions such as the Indian subcontinent and sub-Saharan Africa — an outbreak in Nigeria this year killed at least 1,500 people, according to the United Nations — but it has been rare in industrialized nations for the past 100 years.The disease, spread through feces-contaminated drinking water or food, leads to vomiting and watery diarrhea which, if not treated, can kill a person within hours. It is preventable with clean water and sanitation, but both can be hard to find in corners of the Western Hemisphere's poorest country.Some of the 1.3 million people living in the capital's tent camps already fear the worst.I'm afraid because the water we're drinking here is not treated properly. Any time I drink the water it makes my stomach sick, said Joseph Sidsen Guerry, 20, who lives in the small Jeremie camp in central Port-au-Prince.

Health groups working to keep the disease from spreading beyond the central valley where it emerged last week are focusing on treating the ill, strengthening medical centers with isolation wards and educating the public about the disease.The biggest challenge for us is the amount of misinformation, said Julie Schindall of Oxfam, which trained the host of a radio call-in program to promote good hygiene practices in rural Petit Riviere near the outbreak's epicenter in the Artibonite region. We have to make sure they know what is true and what is not true.Schindall said some Haitians were still drinking from the contaminated Artibonite river because others did so without getting sick.Water purification tablets and oral rehydration salts — used to counteract potentially lethal dehydration caused by diarrhea — have been widely distributed in the region where the river or rainwater remain the only water source for many, said Louise Ivers, an official with the aid group Partners in Health.

For now, officials say their efforts have been making gains.Timothee said at least 259 people have died since early last week and more than 3,300 have fallen ill, but he emphasized that no cases had been confirmed as originating in the crowded capital. Five patients were diagnosed with cholera in Port-au-Prince over the weekend, but officials said they got sick elsewhere.Michel Thieren, a program management officer for the Pan-American Health Organization, said the outbreak has been largely confined to the Artibonite. But he warned: We are expecting a gradual spreading of cholera in the country, and the way it will do that is still unpredictable.Aid groups stress that community outreach is a key part of their prevention efforts.The California-based International Medical Corps has enlisted Haiti's Boy Scouts to distribute fliers educating people about proper hygiene, spokeswoman Margaret Aguirre said. Her group also was dispatching mobile teams of doctors and nurses equipped with IV fluids, cholera cots with a hole for human waste, and disinfectant.Experts said the disease is likely to spread eventually to the Dominican Republic, which is on the same Caribbean island as Haiti. Now that cholera has established itself with a strong foothold in Haiti, it probably will not go away for several years, said Dr. Jon K. Andrus, PAHO's deputy director. Cholera is not a major threat in countries such as the United States because of advanced water and sanitation systems. On average, only about seven cases a year are reported in the U.S., and they almost always involve a traveler infected in another country.

Cholera has played a central role in the development of the field of public health: A cholera outbreak in London in 1854 was successfully battled by a London physician, Dr. John Snow, who helped lay to rest the long-held theory that the disease is caused by miasma, or foul-smelling air.Snow deduced that polluted water coming from a Broad Street pump was the source of illness. NEW YORK – New York City's bedbugs have climbed out of bed and marched into landmarks like the Empire State Building, Bloomingdale's and Lincoln Center, causing fresh anxiety among tourists who are canceling Big Apple vacations planned for the height of the holiday season.Some travelers who had arranged trips to New York say they are creeped out about staying in hotels and visiting attractions as new reports of bedbugs seem to pop up every few days. And officials in Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration are concerned about the effect on the city's image and $30 billion tourism industry.The discoveries of the bloodsucking pests at high-profile places are often not full-blown infestations, or even in public areas. Bloomingdale's reported finding exactly one bug in the famous department store, the Empire State Building had them in the basement and Lincoln Center's were in a dressing room.

But those reports, along with bedbug discoveries in movie theaters, hotels and clothing chain stores, are causing skittish travelers to call off trips planned months ago.Industry professionals — who have privately told city officials that they are nervous about bedbugs hurting New York's reputation — say publicly that they are not aware of any bedbug-related cancellations. But several would-be tourists tracked down by The Associated Press say they are aborting their trips here because they fear the pests.It sounds like you can get them anywhere, any time of day and not know it until you get home, said Patty Majerik, from Baltimore.She said she may not travel to Manhattan next month with her children, ages 7 and 10, like they do every year around the holidays to shop, catch a Broadway show and see the Radio City Christmas show.I've got four people traveling on a train, in cabs, going to stores and theaters, and they could be in any of these places? I hate to say it, but I doubt we're going to come this time, Majerik said.Suzanne Baldwin said she is forfeiting money spent on reservations for a November trip to New York City from her home in Florida. She had already grown accustomed to checking hotel rooms for bedbugs — and has done so in New York before — but she is now overwhelmed at the idea that the bugs have spread beyond hotels.

We thought long and hard about this trip, she told the AP in an e-mail. However, we decided, knowing we would lose quite a bit of money from nonrefundable tickets, it was not worth the worry.Susannah Johnston, a yoga teacher who lives in the New York City suburbs, said that she and her husband wanted to stay overnight in Manhattan last weekend after attending a late concert, but that bedbugs thwarted their plans.
We started researching hotels and prices, and then we read the reviews, she said. Every one of the hotels we were considering had a guest horror story regarding bedbugs.Bloomberg said Monday he was concerned about the effect of bedbug hysteria on the city's reputation.You don't want anything that would dissuade people from coming here, he told reporters. Hopefully these things come and go, and this will go quickly.Sightings of the rust-colored bugs, about the size of an apple seed, have surged in New York and around the nation in recent years. Experts have theorized that an increase in global travel and the banning of certain pesticides may be partly responsible for their spread.And then, exterminators were caught off guard when they began reappearing.It's gone up incredibly. We were completely blindsided by this, said Jody L. Gangloff-Kaufmann, urban entomologist in the integrated pest management program at Cornell University. And for years, nobody knew about it, so reservoir populations were formed here and there.City officials and experts say it is difficult to fully measure the problem, partly because of bedbug stigma and the lack of solid data.The Bloomberg administration fielded 537 complaints in fiscal year 2004, while in 2009 there were nearly 11,000.

It isn't known how closely those complaints reflect the actual spread; not everyone with bedbugs calls to complain, and some calls could be based on fears instead of true cases, Gangloff-Kaufmann said. The most reliable data come from a city survey that began only last year, she said. For the first time, the city health department included a question about bedbugs on its annual community health survey. In 2009, it found, more than 6 percent of New Yorkers — one in 15 adults — said they had battled the pests in the past year. Until the AP reported those results this year, data had been limited to government statistics on bedbug complaints and private pest control company surveys.Bedbugs are famously difficult to eradicate; they hide in many more places than beds and can go a year without feeding. Bloomberg recently joked on David Letterman's Late Show that bedbugs are probably tougher than New York City's notoriously hardy rats. The city's tourism agency, NYC & Company, said it has not seen mass cancellations because of bedbug fears. But officials said some New York hotels, museums and other attractions that depend on tourists have told the administration they are concerned the bedbug rumors will scare travelers away.
Tourism officials are keeping an eye on the situation and are trying to decide how to address the public relations side of it.New Yorkers themselves are also feeling more anxious, as bedbug reports have spread to office buildings and schools. I have definitely had people talking about it more, checking more for signs of bedbugs — it's on people's minds and changing the way they live their lives, said Lisa Tischler, a Manhattan psychologist who treats anxiety disorders. People are really taking it seriously, and there are people who are out of control about it.The online travel site TripAdvisor, where travelers post reviews and ask questions of other tourists, said it has seen a 12 percent increase in New York City posts referencing bedbugs. The site compared the first eight months of 2010 with the same period the previous year.

SAO PAULO – A severe drought has dropped water levels on a major Amazon tributary to their lowest point since officials began keeping records more than a century ago, the government reported Monday, cutting off dozens of communities who depend on the river for work and transportation.Floating homes along the Rio Negro now rest on muddy flats, and locals have had to modify boats to run in shallower waters in a region without roads. Some riverbanks have caved in, although no injuries have been reported. Enormous fields of trash and other debris have been revealed by the disappearing waters.The drought is hurting fishing, cattle, agriculture and other businesses, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency in nearly 40 municipalities. Amazonas state officials said more than 60,000 families have been affected by the drought.The government has distributed about 600 tons of food, water and medicine, much of it by helicopter to isolated villages.It is a difficult situation for the community, resident Josimar Peixoto told Globo TV. The families are struggling here.The government's geological service said Monday that the Rio Negro was measured at a depth of 13.63 meters (44.72 feet) the previous day near the jungle city of Manaus, the lowest since a measuring system was implemented in 1902.

Manaus, in northern Brazil, is where the Rio Negro is at its deepest and where it merges with the Amazon River — meaning some places upstream are nearly completely dry.The previous low was 13.64 meters (44.75 feet), recorded in 1963.An engineer and hydrology expert with the geological service said rains in remote parts of the Amazon will begin raising river levels, but it will take time for that water to reach Manaus.The water is expected to start rising again in about three to four weeks, Daniel Oliveira told The Associated Press.In June 2009, the Rio Negro hit a record high of 29.71 meters (97.5 feet) near Manaus following months of heavy rains.

At that time, flooding across the Amazon basin left more than 400,000 homeless and killed more than 50 people. Those high waters caused the people now experiencing drought to build new, higher floors onto their stilt houses in an effort to escape the rising river.Cycles of flooding and drought have been common in the world's largest remaining tropical wilderness, but they have been more extreme recently, shifting from record floods to record drought in relatively short periods of time, experts say. Many suspect global warming could be driving the whipsaw changes.A report last year from Brazil's National Institute for Space Research, which tracks weather patterns, stated that its weather models forecast rising global temperatures because of ongoing greenhouse gas emissions and project a decrease in rainfall across much of Brazil due to warmer waters in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans causing changes in wind patterns across South America.The document says the changes could affect Brazil's energy sector: More than 70 percent of the nation's energy comes from hydroelectric sources, which would be hurt by reduced rainfall.Associated Press writer Bradley Brooks contributed to this report from Rio de Janeiro.
