Each story is important, but chief among them is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s meeting with foreign reporters earlier today. The PM warned that the threat of the Iranian regime acquiring nuclear weapons is still very real, very worrisome, and hinted that Israel is actively considering military action. Indeed, he said that the only way for economic sanctions ultimately to convince the regime in Tehran to stop pursuing nuclear weapons is if those sanctions are backed by a credible military threat. What’s more, Netanyahu distanced himself from last week’s assessment by outgoing Mossad intelligence chief Meir Dagan that Iran won’t have the Bomb until 2015. He called it was one view among many, and implied he disagreed with Dagan.The only chance that these sanctions will achieve their objectives would be to couple them.with an understanding from Iran that no matter what…that is if they do not achieve their goal, they will be followed with credible military action, Netanyahu said. He noted that the only time Iran briefly suspended pursuit of the Bomb was in 2003, after the U.S. invaded Iraq. When Iran thought there was a credible military option from the United States they temporarily suspended their nuclear weapons programme.

With regards to Dagan’s 2015 assessment, Netanyahu said: I think that intelligence estimates are exactly that, estimates. They range from best case to worst case possibilities, and there is a range there, there is room for differing assessments.
Netanyahu and his close aides are privately furious with Dagan for allowing his somewhat generous assessment of Iran’s capabilities to become public. They are concerned that this potentially allows the international community to ease up on pressure on Iran and undercut the Prime Minister’s strategy of intensifying world pressure on Iran. One advisor said, Dagan should be drawn and quartered.The timing of Dagan’s remarks, and the way they were said, is unacceptable — former heads of Mossad did not behave that way on the day of their departure, said other senior Israeli sources to a reporter. There’s something unprofessional in this. Dagan does not set policy, but only recommends, and his is one of several recommendations.The situation strikes me as similar to the 2007 U.S. National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) that stated that Iran had stopped its nuclear weapons program in 2003. President Bush and his senior aides at the time felt blindsided by the report which leaked before they had read and processed the assessment. What’s more, Bush disagreed with the NIE. He said publicly that he believed Iran was still a real threat and still determined to acquire nuclear weapons, and later said in his book, Decision Points, the NIE had limited his options and undercut his efforts to build international pressure on Iran. In the end, it has become clear that Iran has reengaged its pursuit of nuclear weapons. Unfortunately, valuable time was lost by the leak of the NIE report.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu said he wants to negotiate peace with the Palestinians, but they are simply refusing to sit down and have honest, direct talks. What is preventing the advent of peace, the advent of peace negotiations is that the Palestinians are doing everything in their power to avoid them, said Netanyahu. That is the simple truth….The Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. They are not going to get an imposed settlement from the outside, it does not work. The only way to get peace is to negotiate peace….If they are prepared to negotiate then they will find — that this government, my government, this prime minister, me — that I’m prepared and able to achieve historic peace.

The total has more than doubled in five years, largely as a result of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as changes in military doctrine.

“The Department of Defense’s increased requirements for small- and medium-calibre ammunitions have largely been driven by increased weapons training requirements, dictated by the army’s transformation to a more self-sustaining and lethal force – which was accelerated after the attacks of 11 September, 2001 – and by the deployment of forces to conduct recent US military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq, said the report by the General Accounting Office (GAO).Estimating how many bullets US forces have expended for every insurgent killed is not a simple or precisely scientific matter. The former head of US forces in Iraq, General Tommy Franks, famously claimed that his forces don’t do body counts.But senior officers have recently claimed great successes in Iraq, based on counting the bodies of insurgents killed. Maj-Gen Rick Lynch, the top US military spokesman in Iraq, said 1,534 insurgents had been seized or killed in a recent operation in the west of Baghdad. Other estimates from military officials suggest that at least 20,000 insurgents have been killed in President George Bush’s war on terror.

John Pike, director of the Washington military research group GlobalSecurity.org, said that, based on the GAO’s figures, US forces had expended around six billion bullets between 2002 and 2005. How many evil-doers have we sent to their maker using bullets rather than bombs? I don’t know, he said.If they don’t do body counts, how can I? But using these figures it works out at around 300,000 bullets per insurgent. Let’s round that down to 250,000 so that we are underestimating.Pointing out that officials say many of these bullets have been used for training purposes, he said: What are you training for? To kill insurgents.Kathy Kelly, a spokeswoman for the peace group Voices in the Wilderness, said Mr Bush believed security for the American people could come only from the use of force. Truer security would be achieved if the US developed fairer relations with other countries and was not involved in the occupation of Iraq. The President, said Ms Kelly, should learn from Israel’s experience of occupying the Palestinians rather than buying its ammunition.

The GAO report notes that the three government-owned, contractor-operated plants that produce small- and medium-calibre ammunition were built in 1941.Though millions of dollars have been spent on upgrading the facilities, they remain unable to meet current munitions needs in their current state. The government-owned plant producing small-calibre ammunition cannot meet the increased requirements, even with modernisation efforts, said the report.Also, commercial producers within the national technology and industrial base have not had the capacity to meet these requirements. As a result, the Department of Defense had to rely at least in part on foreign commercial producers to meet its small-calibre ammunition needs.A report in Manufacturing & Technology News said that the Pentagon eventually found two producers capable of meeting its requirements. One of these was the US firm Olin-Winchester.The other was Israel Military Industries, an Israeli ammunition manufacturer linked to the Israeli government, which produces the bulk of weapons and ordnance for the Israeli Defence Force.The Pentagon reportedly bought 313 million rounds of 5.56mm, 7.62mm and 50-calibre ammunition last year and paid $10m (about £5.5m) more than it would have cost for it to produce the ammunition at its own facilities.

President Obama has missed the opportunity to stop the fraudulent attack against conservatives and talk radio by the media and Democrats. Now, our President gives us the big, written out and late speech that talks about the victims and healing for the nation.Honor the Dead and the families. No mention about the obscene distortion, libel and lies hurled at conservatives who speak their mind on radio and TV.Shame on Barack Obama. He is the President of all US citizens and he has fraudulently and stupidly missed the opportunity to promote the truth, represent us all and stop the libel.The teleprompter speech now is as usual, 2 days late. You see, it would not serve Obama and the progressive left’s purposes to stop the blame and lies. Saul Alynsky and Rules for Radicals tells them what to do and this is a crises not to waste. Responding late and in a shallow/teleprompter way seem to be part of the hallmark of this President. We saw him wait 3 days to respond to the nation regarding the near successful plane explosion, by an Islamic radical, Christmas Day of 2009. He was apparently distracted with a golf game in Hawaii. Then, regarding the evil of Islamic radical, Major Nidal Hasan who murdered 14 people at Ft. Hood, we heard our President say Don’t rush to judgment as if it was a practical crime to notice the obvious, that the FBI had tracked him for 1 ½ years, he was in touch with Al Qaeda, radical Imams who had talked with the 9/11 hijackers and demonstrated bizarre, behavior. We weren’t supposed to notice that he was yet another Muslim on a Jihad, wiping out infidels in a planned attack. Sorry Mr. President. It must be my nasty talk radio background to have quickly noticed those facts.

For the last few days we have heard the media and leftist orgy of blood libel and blame against the Republicans, Talk Radio, Tea Party and conservatives in general. As a growing, national talk radio host I have been most fascinated as to the complete avoidance by the media and left regarding realty of the killer and his world.I have heard media say that Jared Loughner, the accused murderer was an atheist, Satanist, drug addict, had an occult shrine in his home, scared others at school, grabbed people’s crotches and wrote out bizarre and violent fantasies. We also know that Loughner had contacted Rep. Gabrielle Giffords several times and felt ‘disrespected’ with her response. He fed his evil with drugs, the occult and Satanism. Politically, he was a known Independent.The bottom line was that he had an occult fed, evil obsession that grew regarding the Representative. He then acted on his obsession and went to another function Giffords spoke at. We all know the tragic facts that happened. It was a blood letting. From witness accounts we know that Loughner shot Rep. Giffords in the head, murdered 6 people, including a 9 year old girl and a Republican, federal Judge, John Roll, among others.

Immediately we heard Democrats, officials and media everywhere start blaming this all on talk radio, conservative rhetoric, the environment we all create, the anger in the air….on and on the blood libel assault as grown. One Democrat congressman commented,If violent rhetoric didn’t cause this shooting it will cause the next one.The now infamous Sheriff Clarence Dupnik smeared talk radio and conservatives almost immediately saying that on air vitriol has consequences. Mr. Wisdom shrine himself, Bill Clinton weighed in talking about how words have consequences.Now the usual, absurd blaming orgy is going on endless rides around the theme park. Progressives and other leftists in media are talking gun control pushing the fairness doctrine in a heavier way…..going after those nasty conservatives and talk radio folks…….evil and dangerous I tell you. Freedom and speech must stop or murders will grow everywhere.Now we at least know what the real issue is thanks to Sheriff Dupnik, our rogue and leftist media, Obama, Clinton and other enlightened leftists.Drum roll………Conservatives, Talk Radio and the Tea Party people are the problem. We must be stopped.

I have never heard any mainstream talk radio personality or conservative political leader, like Sarah Palin suggest anything immoral or illegal. Any person would be most horrified with the evil murders that occurred in Arizona. I would submit that this nation MUST be angry and focused right now to get things done. We MUST continue to the rebuking momentum and ‘spankage’ that occurred in the mid terms to correct the damaging mistake America made in the last election by electing Obama. If the radically drugged media and progressive leftists feel that talk radio and the right is creating an environment of anger…..they are right….AND IT WILL INCREASE, FOCUS AND VOTE THE REST OF THE SCUM OUT OF OFFICE, INCLUDING OBAMA. Dual-degree Hamas rooted program introduced into U.S. college, backed by George Soros With funding help from George Soros, Bard College has developed a new academic program that will award dual college degrees from Bard University and Al Quds University in the Palestinian Authority. 10 January 2011: In an article dated 27 December 2010, I wrote about how Bard College President Leon Botstein is permitting a Hamas support group called the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) to operate on his college campus to train activists to go the Middle East as a human shield support arm for known terrorist groups like Hamas.Rather than closing down the campus group, the first one of its kind in the U.S. on a college campus, Botstein instead defended it as part of the free exchange of ideas. But Bard-ISM engages in lies and deception as part of the ISM playbook, and does more than just teach propaganda to Bard’s students. The campus club trains activists to assist terrorist murderers such as are found in Hamas. Some of Bard’s trainees were involved with the Gaza Freedom Flotilla boats.Now further information is emerging about the judgment of Bard’s president which could be the harbinger of more ruinous effects on American post-secondary education across the nation.Leon Botstein, Bard’s President, who promotes himself as a progressive educator and musician and who incredibly uses the memory of his relatives who died in the Holocaust as a kind of excuse for his support of such anti-Semitic movements on his campus, has been teaming up with billionaire leftist philanthropist George Soros to create a new educational paradigm with such a program that could spell disaster for college curriculum in America. Left unchecked and allowed to exist below the radar, it will surely have an equally disastrous impact on Israel, our friend and democratic ally in the Middle East.

Leon Botstein: the educational progressive

Since Botstein considers himself an educational progressive, he has advanced the idea that students in America should bypass high school and go straight to college. Actually, such a progressive idea would probably make sense to Botstein, who wants the curriculum and educational system of the totalitarian world to carry equal weight with a U.S. college degree. Many high school students can’t read and are open to indoctrination, so why not speed them up to these same faults at the collegiate level? If you’ve ever wondered how some Arab college students flew jetliners into the World Trade Center, understand they had a lifetime of indoctrination in the classroom against the US and Israel that inspired them to do so.In keeping with Botstein’s sick and twisted idea that he is promoting peace by allowing students to be trained and funded on campus to join the Hamas flotillas to enter Gaza in support of Hamas, and to send activists to the West Bank to interfere with anti-terror operations of the IDF, Botstein now intends to have a Palestinian university that has open educational and organizational roots with Hamas to contribute curriculum to a program that will be recognized as part of the American college educational experience. Thanks to Botstein’s penchant for supporting Palestinian groups that attack the notion of a Jewish state, that curriculum will be given equal weight with what is taught in America and applied toward an American college diploma.With funding help from Soros, Bard college has come up with a new academic program that will award dual college degrees from Bard University and Al Quds University in the Palestinian Authority. Half the program will be dedicated to turning out teachers, who you can bet will be turning out the false history and political garbage of the totalitarian Palestinian Authority, not what US teachers usually teach.

This dual degree program with Bard isn’t just limited to Al Quds University in the Palestinian Authority but is intended to be also offered in conjunction with another Palestinian college in the West Bank. Those other colleges, such as Bir Zeit University and Al-Najah are also known Hamas bastions. The student groups that ran for control of student government at Bir Zeit ran on a ticket of Hamas murdering more Jews than its terrorist club opponents with displays illustrating Israeli buses destroyed by attacks and explosions. Meanwhile, An-Najah ran a museum exhibit on campus representing the Sbarro Pizza Parlor bombing by Hamas, replete with blood splattered display and body parts, all in praise of the Arab martyr who carried out the mass murder.

The Bard dual degree program: a stepping stone

It is important to understand that once such a dual program is accredited in the US, Botstein’s support of these terror-bases-cum colleges in the Middle East can also enjoy financial subsidies from U.S. taxpayers via Title IV funding of the National Education Act.Is this really so bad? you might ask. Won’t this promote peace between Arabs and Israelis? Won’t this uplift the Arabs and make them more like us and to like us as a people and culture? Well, guess again…During the Cold War, immigrants to America who managed to escape the Soviet Union and enrolled in American universities found that units for courses they studied in the humanities frequently could not be articulated for credit for degrees here in the US. The logic that followed most college administrations back then was that courses in history and political science taught in totalitarian communist countries could not be regarded as education, but rather indoctrination taught in the mindset of the totalitarian regime where such courses in the humanities were taught.Former Iraqi agent & Intifada leader assisting Bard’s project

Assisting in Botstein’s pet project is Sari Nusseibeh, the President of Al Quds University and a good buddy of Bostein’s. Starry-eyed progressives such as Bottsein like to fawn over Nusseibeh as being an educated Palestinian with whom peace can be achieved. In fact, it would almost appear that way – almost, until looks further through the thin layer of hypocrisy and contradictions he embraces.For example, Nusseibeh has chosen not to support the academic boycott of Israel and has even publicly spoken out against suicide bombings. What most people fail to understand, however, is the reason why he has embraced such a position. His objections to those tactics are not based on peace or moral standards, but because he does not believe they go far enough. Such measures are not effective in achieving Palestinian irredentist goals and in his judgment, those tactics fail to create enough antipathy against Israel to the outside world.

Al Quds & Hamas

Nusseibeh allows Hamas and other terror organizations and their leaders to have a presence on the Al Quds campus. The Hamas Charter, of course, calls for the destruction of all of Israel and the eventual annihilation all of the world’s Jews. He was caught during the First Gulf War spotting, by telephone, for Saddam Hussein’s SCUDS to be dropped on the heads of Israelis. Sari Nusseibeh was advising the Iraqis how to better target their Scud missiles so they would have the maximum possible impact on Israeli public opinion, according to a former Israeli official quoted in this article. One of the targets he suggested they target was Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem, Israel’s largest and best-equipped emergency/trauma center. Caught in the act, he was arrested on 29 January 1991 and served about 90 days in detention, but was later deported without charge.He was allowed to return to Jerusalem as the President of Al Quds University by an Israeli government that at the time, was leftist in its thinking and irresponsible in its actions regarding the safety of the Israeli people. Aryeh Elded, a member of Israel’s parliament who read the arrest report stated that Nusseibehn should have received ten years of hard time for his actions.None of this matters to Botstein, however, who cites one reason that we should all trust his judgment is that he is a conductor emeritus for the Jerusalem symphony. You see, he claims to really love Israel while concurrently claiming Judea and Samaria is a political name (only 2,000 years old) for what should legitimately be called the West Bank (invented in 1948 by the Arabs for the Western press). Botstein loves Israel so much he’ll help the Arabs deport all the Jews out of the West Bank.

Palestinian infiltration into the American university and college system is nothing new, but is growing in its intensity and fervor. The Palestinian Academic Society for the Study of International Affairs (passia.org) began a project under Arafat that took young Arab students with a good command of English and trained them to then go under scholarship to an American college where their job was to get into the campus newspapers and organize anti-Israel propaganda on campuses, usually by creating chapters called Students for Justice in Palestine or similar names.Today, if you visit most major campuses there are mock checkpoint displays and tabling accusing Israel of being an apartheid state when, in reality, it is the only state in the region that does not practice apartheid. To date, this has been mostly just propaganda. But now, Botstein is allowing the first chapter of the International Solidarity Movement on a US college campus, a group that trains not only Arabs but American anarchist students in methods of entering the Holy Land to act as human shields and how to interfere with anti-terror operations of the Israeli army.When I confronted Botstein about this, he justified it by citing the assorted SJP chapters across the country. One can be certain that if Botstein allows the ISM Chapter on his campus to continue conducting business as usual, other campuses will follow suit and allow similar training chapters of the ISM on their campuses. They will point to Bard, Botstein and Al Quds and consider it as a progressive pilot program. The dual Bard-Al Quds diploma program will undoubtedly provide a sense of legitimacy to future programs at other colleges and universities.Just as with soviet curriculum during the Cold War, curriculum in the humanities from Al Quds, particularly history and political science will no doubt contain the latest propaganda narratives of the Arabs they use to indoctrinate their own people. It is not unusual to find Arab PhD’s at Arab universities in the West Bank who teach that Israel’s Jews never came from the Holy Land. 12 January 2011: The New York Times reported Saturday that British authorities raised the level of terrorism alerts at transport hubs including railroad stations and airports on Friday, but news here in the U.S. relative to that threat was quickly overshadowed by the mass shooting in Tucson. According to a highly placed domestic intelligence source at Scotland Yard I interviewed yesterday, there is a deep concern over possible suicide attacks by bombers or teams of bombers, or even attacks by Muslim terrorists using firearms in conjunction with explosives. The likelihood of these attacks appear to greater at airports, the underground rail and stations.British authorities raised the alert level for those locations on Friday, while leaving the national terror assessment at severe, which is Britain’s second highest level of alert. As reported by the New York Times, holidays for counter-terrorism officials and in some police departments have been cancelled or postponed until further notice.Additional intelligence indicates possible attack plans by Islamic terrorists against financial centers and political offices. These concerns are immediate and expected to last for the immediate future. Hardly ever does a day go by without some form of disparagement being uttered by a liberal Democrat regarding our stately and rock-solid Constitution. It is the stout character and survivability of that internationally revered document that those left-wing cretins just can’t stomach. They wish to all their supposed deities for it to fail or be found to be incompetent; but alas, poor Yorick, it still stands tall.
Were the Constitution found to be lacking, a great screech of unbounded joy would ring out of the current personnel now usurping our White House; they could run roughshod over all formalities and legal documents and doctrines in their efforts to hand us over to a third world entity with corrupt leaders such as the unscrupulous United Nations.The very astute and redoubtable David Limbaugh wrote in the GOP/USA The Eagle on January 4, 2011 an article titled, Is the Constitution Senile? Commentary on gopusa.com, which outlined the move made by the new congressional Republicans’ brilliant decision to actually read the entire Constitution aloud on the floor of the Congress on opening day.

On that occasion, it seemed that just about all the Reps, R’s and D’s took part in the process, each speaking one section of the quite simple for such an auspicious and enduring document. Even little Nancy, who was the third in line to emote, which she did like a well schooled fifth grader who had memorized her few lines in the school play. She did it in rapid fire mode and I half expected to see her curtsy and rush back to her seat when she finished.In the past two years, the liberal Democrats have proven that they either have no knowledge of the contents of this distinguished document that was the base for their swearing in ceremony when each of them first became Congressmen; or they have no loyalty to adhere to its rulings and guidance. Frankly, we all know it is the latter of those two as is shown by the largely anti-American legislation that favors not the people of the United States but only certain designated and chosen sections that are partial to those same liberal Democrats.Limbaugh wrote of two Washington Post blogger/writers, Ezra Klein and E. J. Dionne providing input for the discussion on the constitutional reading, Klein calling it a gimmick and saying it was written more than 100 years ago showing a bit of uncertainty himself about the document that was signed and adopted in 1787 some 224 years ago.Dionne expressed similar irreverence for our founding document Limbaugh stated, by lamenting that the tea party movement has treated the Constitution as the equivalent of sacred scripture.Limbaugh went on to say that those assessment(s) are quite a far cry from that of former British Prime Minister William Gladstone, who observed, The American Constitution is, so far as I can see, the most wonderful work ever struck off at a given time by the brain and purpose of man.

This is why Ezra Klein and E. J. Dionne Washington Post writers try to denigrate the Constitution to any extent possible; because it is so RIGHT and I don’t mean that in the political sense as compared to their LEFTness. No, those two followers of socio-communist beliefs just don’t like the fairness and correctness of our Constitution; they would rather see it an even more jumbled mess than they normally describe it, if only to make their point that it is a faulty document.If ever they could get their heads screwed on properly they might be able to see the plausibility of that wonderful document that has been held up as a model of completeness by noted scholars and statesmen from around the globe.The left would like to be able to interpret it on an occasion-by-occasion basis and mold it to say what they would have it say had they themselves written it. In other words, let it state what is in their bigoted and warped brains for any given situation; not a case of one rule fits all, but a case of one rule means to be changed to whatever they have in mind for that occasion. Typically left-wing cheating to make something fit that otherwise would never be acceptable. Like the liberal interpretation of the word bipartisanship to mean, Do it our way.

NYC Mayor Bloomberg is no longer the most incompetent local official in America. The torch has been passed to Pima County Sheriff, Clarence Dupnik for his disastrous mishandling of Jared Loughner who went on a shooting rampage.Dupnik’s non stop blathering about how talk radio drove Loughner to shoot into a crowd was crazy enough. As the county’s top law enforcement officer, Dupnik is supposed to be investigating a crime, not campaigning for higher office on the Democrat ticket.It’s bad enough that his comments are gifts to Loughner’s defense attorneys. It’s downright Holderesque to assert phony facts without a scintilla of actual evidence.

But the sheriff desperately needs to deflect attention away from himself and his gross incompetence when it comes to all matters Jared Loughner. This is not one of those cases in which a normally nice, quiet kid” suddenly goes berserk. People who knew Loughner were hardly surprised to learn he was the shooter. They were expecting him to do something like this.Even the NYT admits Loughner was well known to law enforcement, as was his not exactly normal family:He was a nihilist and loves causing chaos, and that is probably why he did the shooting, along with the fact he was sick in the head,said Zane Gutierrez, 21, who was living in a trailer outside Tucson and met Mr. Loughner sometimes to shoot at cans for target practice.The police visited the Loughner home more than once before the shooting. A college instructor was so unnerved by the kid that he kicked Loughner out of class. Loughner had five contacts with the campus police. Fifty two year old former classmate, Lynda Sorenson:We have a mentally unstable person in the class that scares the living crap out of me. He is one of those whose picture you see on the news, after he has come into class with an automatic weapon. Everyone interviewed would say, Yeah, he was in my math class and he was really weird. I sit by the door with my purse handy. If you see it on the news one night, know that I got out fast…

A fifty two year old female has a pretty well honed intuition. Maybe she should be Pima’s next sheriff.Loughner’s fixation with Gabrielle Giffords began during the pre Palin era of 2007.It won’t take a lot of testing to determine that Loughner is paranoid schizophrenic. Most mentally ill people are not dangerous–this group is an exception. It’s also a disorder especially resistant to treatment. Doctors and therapists are viewed as part of the conspiracy, not as helpers.Sheriff Dupnik’s ignorance of such a dangerous mental disorder is frightening. The hallmark of schizophrenia is that the patient responds to internal rather than external cues. These are the people who hear voices.Jared felt nothing existed but his subconscious, Mr. Gutierrez said. The dream world was what was real to Jared, not the day-to-day of our lives.That’s a pretty good description of schizophrenia. When those delusions are paranoid in nature, you have an unpredictably dangerous person. Loughner’s rage was directed at the demons in his own mind. Unfortunately, he perceives them as being part of the external world.

Too bad the sheriff missed all of that.Perhaps stationing a deputy or two at the Giffords event would have been prudent given all the sheriff knew about Loughner’s history.Or perhaps Dupnik could have taken this young man’s obvious mental illness seriously over the years.It says a lot about Dupnik’s weakness of character that he cannot even entertain the possibility that he may bear some responsibility for the tragedy. Madrid FOR more than 40 years a veil has been drawn over one of the most tragic episodes in the life of King Juan Carlos of Spain. Just before Easter 1956, his brother, Alfonso, 14, was shot dead with a .22 calibre pistol while the 18-year-old Juan Carlos was alone with him. The king’s authorised biography made no mention of the incident. But light has been shed on it by Paul Preston, a professor at the London School of Economics, whose biography laying bare the king’s private life has reached No 2 in the Spanish bestseller lists. Preston’s book, entitled Juan Carlos, The People’s King, has caused a furore by suggesting the future monarch may have pulled the trigger. It says he admitted to a friend he had been holding the gun at the time.The professor has given more than 60 interviews to the Spanish media and has been bombarded with hate mail and death threats. A source close to Juan Carlos, 65, has denounced the book as nasty rubbish, but the palace has refused to be drawn.

It’s a highly explosive subject that is still taboo, said Preston, who has written extensively on the Spanish civil war. But the fact is the old official statement that claimed a pistol just went off, as if by itself, is pretty inadequate. The king was not a child when it happened but an 18-year-old cadet at a military academy who knew how to handle guns.The shooting occurred at Estoril, Portugal, where the royal family was in exile. When Juan Carlos reached 10, his father had been coerced into handing him to General Franco, the dictator. Franco wanted to groom the blond, blue-eyed prince as his successor.However, on March 29, 1956 Juan Carlos travelled to Portugal to be with his parents. He and his younger brother had returned from mass and were alone in an upstairs room when a single shot rang out. Alfonso was hit in the forehead at close range and died within minutes.A terse official statement, approved by Franco, said a gun accidentally went off, but gave no more details. After the funeral just two days later, Don Juan immediately sent his surviving son back to his military academy in Spain and threw the pistol into a lake. It is not known where the gun came from, and Juan Carlos has never publicly discussed what he was doing with his brother at the time the shot was fired. There has been speculation that he played a prank, believing that the weapon was not loaded.

Bernardo Arnoso, one of the king’s friends interviewed for the book, claims Juan Carlos told him the gun had been in his hands. It was the king who had his finger on the trigger, said Preston. While most people will accept it was simply an accident, we could of course speculate for hours on his unconscious state of mind.Antonio Eraso, another of Juan Carlos’s childhood confidants, told the author that Don Juan may initially have been suspicious. According to Eraso, the king was taken by his father and made to swear that he didn’t shoot his brother on purpose, said Preston.
The king’s relationship with his father was already strained and after that they often avoided contact with each other. I believe that to have experienced such a tragic incident, with all the feelings of guilt that must have arisen afterwards even when we accept it was an accident, must have shaped certain aspects of the king’s character, and that is why I explored it.The book, which runs to more than 650pages, also contains allegations about the king’s love life.His first love is said to have been Maria Gabriella of Savoy, daughter of King Umberto, the exiled Italian monarch. According to Preston, their liaison was brought to an abrupt end when she was deemed unsuitable by Franco. In one sense Franco became his surrogate father and took control of almost every aspect of his life, from what he read to who would be his future spouse, said Preston.

Juan Carlos, blessed with film-star looks, swiftly moved on, supposedly falling in love with Olghina di Robilant, a beautiful but penniless aristocrat from Rome. Robilant reveals in letters and a memoir that she had a long-term sexual relationship with the king before Franco again intervened, Preston said. This has certainly provided grounds for speculating that her daughter, born during that period, may have been fathered by Juan Carlos. The king was eventually permitted to marry Princess Sophia, the daughter of King Paul of Greece.Preston’s book has been praised for its openness by left-wing politicians and condemned as irreverent by conservatives. Francisco Umbral, a leading columnist, wrote: What can that fat Englishman possibly tell us? Some academics believe the book has had strong reactions because the foundations of post-Franco society are relatively weak. As the father of Spanish democracy the king has played a stabilising role and anything that could undermine him personally is perceived as having a potentially destabilising influence politically, said Paloma Gay y Blasco, a Spanish social anthropologist at Queen’s University, Belfast.The private life of the king is treated as sacrosanct in pretty much the same way as the private lives of British royals were 50 years ago.

Juan Carlos I (baptized as Juan Carlos Alfonso Víctor María de Borbón y Borbón-Dos Sicilias; born January 5, 1938, Rome, Italy) is the reigning King of Spain.
On 22 November 1975, two days after the death of Francisco Franco, Juan Carlos was designated King according to the law of succession promulgated by Franco. He successfully oversaw the transition of Spain to a democratic constitutional monarchy. Recent polls show that he is widely approved of by Spaniards.

Juan Carlos's titles include that of King of Jerusalem, as successor to the royal family of Naples. He is also a descendant of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom through his grandmother, Victoria Eugenie; of Louis XIV of France through the House of Bourbon; of the Emperor Charles V, who belonged to the Habsburg dynasty of the Holy Roman Empire; of the House of Savoy of Italy; etc.

His name, while rarely anglicised, is rendered as John Charles Alphonse Victor Maria of Bourbon (and Bourbon-Two Sicilies). He was given these names after his father (Juan de Borbón), grandfather (Alfonso XIII) and maternal grandfather (Prince Carlos de Borbón-Dos Sicilias).

Early life
Born as son of H.R.H. Infante Don Juan de Borbón, Count of Barcelona (Conde de Barcelona ), son of Alfonso XIII of Spain, and Princess Maria Mercedes of Bourbon-Orleans. He has one older sibling, a sister, Infanta Pilar, and two younger ones, Infanta Margarita, and the late Infante Alfonso. He was baptized by Cardinal Eugenio Cardinal Pacelli (later Pope Pius XII).The future King's early life was dictated largely by the political concerns of his father and Franco. He moved to Spain in 1948 to be educated there after his father persuaded Franco to allow this. He began his studies in San Sebastián and finished them in 1954 at the San Isidro Institute in Madrid. He then joined the army, undergoing officer training from 1955-1957 in Zaragoza.

In 1956, when Juan Carlos was 18, he reportedly shot and killed his younger brother, Infante Alfonso, in a gunplay accident after returning home from Mass. This event occurred in the family residence in Estoril, Portugal.Starting in 1957, he spent a year in the naval school at Pontevedra and another in the air force school in San Javier in Murcia. In 1961, he graduated from the Complutense University, majoring in Political and International Law, Economics and Public Administration. He then went to live in the Zarzuela Palace, and began carrying out official duties.

Prince of Spain, 1969-1975
The regime of Francisco Franco had come to power during the Spanish Civil War, which had pitted republicans, anarchists, socialists, and Communists against conservatives, monarchists, and nationalists, with the latter group ultimately emerging successful with the support of neighbouring Portugal and the major European Axis powers of Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. Despite his alliance with monarchists, Franco was not eager to restore the deposed Spanish monarchy once in power, preferring to head a regime with himself as head of state for life. Though Franco's partisan supporters generally accepted this arrangement for the present, much debate quickly ensued over who would replace Franco when he died. Monarchist factions demanded the return of a hard-line absolute monarchy, and eventually Franco agreed that his successor would be a monarch.The heir to the throne of Spain was Juan de Borbón (Count of Barcelona), the son of the late Alfonso XIII. However, Franco viewed the heir with extreme suspicion, believing him to be a liberal who was opposed to his regime. Franco then considered giving the throne to Juan Carlos's cousin (and proven Francoist) Alfonso, Duke of Anjou and Cádiz, who had married Franco's granddaughter in 1972. In response, Juan Carlos started to use his second name Carlos to assert his claim to the heritage of the Carlist branch of his family.

Ultimately, Franco decided to skip a generation and name Prince Juan Carlos as his personal successor. Franco hoped the young Prince could be groomed to take over the nation while still maintaining the ultra-conservative nature of his regime. In 1969, Juan Carlos was officially designated heir and was given the new title of Prince of Spain (not the traditional Prince of Asturias).Juan Carlos met and consulted with Franco many times while heir apparent and often performed official and ceremonial state functions alongside the dictator, much to the anger of hard-line republicans and more moderate liberals, who had hoped that Franco's death would bring in an era of reform. During those years, Juan Carlos publicly supported Franco's regime. However, as the years progressed, Juan Carlos began meeting with political opposition leaders and exiles, who were fighting to bring liberal reform to the country. Franco, for his part, remained largely oblivious to the prince's actions and denied allegations that Juan Carlos was in any way disloyal to his vision of the regime.During periods of Franco's temporary incapacity in 1974 and 1975 Juan Carlos was acting head of state. Near death, on 30 October, 1975, Franco gave full control to Juan Carlos. On 22 November, following Franco's death, the Cortes Generales proclaimed Juan Carlos King of Spain and on November 27, Juan Carlos ascended the Spanish throne with an anointing ceremony called Holy Spirit Mass which was the equivalent to a coronation at the Jerónimos Church in Madrid.

Restoration of the monarchy
After Franco's death, Juan Carlos I quickly instituted democratic reforms, to the great displeasure of Falangist and conservative (monarchist) elements, especially in the military, who had expected him to maintain the authoritarian state. He appointed Adolfo Suárez, a former leader of the Movimiento Nacional, as Prime Minister of Spain.On 20 May 1977, the leader of the only-recently legalized Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) Felipe González, accompanied by Javier Solana, visited Juan Carlos in the Zarzuela Palace. The event represented a key endorsement of the monarchy from Spain's political left, who had been historically republican. Left-wing support for the monarchy grew when the Communist Party of Spain was legalized shortly thereafter, a move Juan Carlos had pressed for, despite enormous right-wing military opposition at that time, during the Cold War.On 15 June 1977, Spain held its first post-Franco democratic elections. In 1978, a new Constitution was promulgated that acknowledged Juan Carlos as rightful heir of the Spanish dynasty and King. This language justified Juan Carlos' position by deeming him Head of State of a democratic, historical monarchy, and not simply the appointed heir of the dictator Franco. The Constitution was passed by the democratically elected Cortes Generales, ratified by the people in a referendum and then signed into law by the King before a solemn meeting of the Cortes.

Further legitimacy had been restored to Juan Carlos´ position on 14 May 1977, when his father, Don Juan (whom many monarchists had recognized as the legitimate, exiled King of Spain during the Franco era), formally renounced his claim to the Throne and recognized his son as the sole head of the Spanish Royal House, transferring to him the historical heritage of the Spanish monarchy, thus making Juan Carlos both the de facto and the de jure (rightful) King in the eyes of the traditional monarchists. Juan Carlos, who was already King since Franco's death, gave an acceptance address after his father's resignation speech and thanked him by confirming the title of Count of Barcelona that Don Juan had assumed in exile.Under the new 1978 Constitution Juan Carlos relinquished absolute power and became a reigning but non-ruling monarch. The reforms of these years attracted considerable animosity from the armed forces, which ultimately culminated in an attempted military coup on 23 February 1981, in which the Cortes was seized by members of the Guardia Civil in the parliamentary chamber (see 23-F). According to the widely accepted version, the coup ended up being thwarted by the public television broadcast by the King, calling for unambiguous support for the legitimate democratic government. In the hours before his speech, he had personally called many senior military figures to tell them that he was opposed to the coup, and that they had to defend the democratic government. However, some authors (like Ronald Hilton) cast doubt over the King's role in the events. According to the explanation offered by Patricia Sverlo, author of a biography of Juan Carlos, the coup was actually organized by the Spanish establishment to neutralize the risk of a real coup by the army, moderate the left wingers' reformist demands, and increase Juan Carlos's popularity.

When Juan Carlos became king, Communist leader Santiago Carrillo had nicknamed him Juan Carlos the Brief, predicting that the monarchy would soon be swept away with the other remnants of the Franco era. After the collapse of the attempted coup mentioned above, however, in an emotional statement, Carrillo told television viewers: God save the King. The Communist leader also remarked: Today, we are all monarchists.If public support for the monarchy among democrats and leftists prior to 1981 had been limited, following the King's handling of the coup, it became significantly greater. According to a poll by Sigma Dos published in the newspaper El Mundo in November 2005, 77.5% of Spaniards thought Juan Carlos was good or very good', 15.4% not so good, and only 7.1% bad or very bad. Even so, the issue of the monarchy re-emerged on 28 September 2007 as photos of the King were burnt in public in Catalonia by relatively small groups of protesters wanting the restoration of the Republic.In July 2000, Juan Carlos was almost the victim of an assassination attempt by Juan María Fernández y Krohn.

Role in contemporary Spanish politics
The election of socialist leader Felipe González to the Spanish prime ministership in 1982 marked the effective end of Juan Carlos' active involvement in Spanish politics. González would govern for over a decade, and his administration helped consolidate the democratic gains initiated by Juan Carlos and thus maintained the stability of the nation. Today the King exercises little real power over the country's politics, but is regarded as an essential symbol of the country's unity. Unlike many other European monarchs, under the constitution, the King has immunity from prosecution in matters relating to his official duties. This is so because every act of the King as such (and not as a citizen) needs to be undersigned by a government official, thus making the undersigner responsible instead of the king. He gives an annual speech to the nation on Christmas Eve. He is the commander-in-chief of the Spanish armed forces. He does however have informal powers such as giving speeches. This has been known to cause controversy when he spoke in order to see the handing back of Gibraltar in 1991 at the United Nations General Assembly, during which he described the issue as an unresolved colonial problem which affects Spain's territorial integrity.In 1979, King Juan Carlos I instituted the Ruta de Quetzal as a way to promote cultural exchange between students from Spain and Latin America. In 1987, he became the first King of Spain to visit the former Spanish possession of Puerto Rico.

2007 Ibero-American Summit Controversy
In November 2007 at the Ibero-American Summit in Santiago de Chile, during a heated exchange, Juan Carlos pointed his finger at Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez and said tú (using the familiar form of you), then moments later asked him, ¿Por qué no te callas?" (Why don't you shut up?) Chávez had been interrupting Spanish prime minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, while the latter was defending his predecessor and political opponent, José María Aznar, after Chávez had referred to Aznar as a fascist, a particularly strong accusation to make of a Spanish politician due to the recent fascist dictatorship of Francisco Franco. The King then left the hall when President Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua accused Spain of intervention in his country's elections, an unprecedented diplomatic incident (especially since never before has the king shown any sign of irritability), and complained about some Spanish energy companies working in Nicaragua, to which Nicaragua owes considerable debts, which the country is unable to pay..

Family and private life
Juan Carlos was married in Athens on 14 May, 1962, to HRH Princess Sophia of Greece and Denmark, daughter of King Paul. She was Greek Orthodox but converted to Roman Catholicism in order to become Spain's Queen. They have two daughters, Elena and Cristina, and a son, the heir apparent, Felipe.In 1972, Juan Carlos, a keen sailor, competed in the Dragon class event at the Olympic Games, though he did not win any medals. In their summer holidays, the whole family meets in Marivent Palace (Palma de Mallorca), where they take part in sailing competitions. In winter, they used to go skiing in Baqueira-Beret and Candanchú (Pyrenees).In August 2006, it is alleged that Juan Carlos shot a drunken tame bear (Mitrofan) during a private hunting trip to Russia. The office of the Spanish Monarchy denies these claims, which are made by Russian regional authorities.Juan Carlos and his consort both speak several languages. They both speak Spanish, English, and French. Unlike the Queen however, Juan Carlos does not speak German, nor her native language, Greek, a fact he regrets. Besides these languages, the King speaks fluent Italian, Portuguese and Catalan.

Titles
King Juan Carlos I is a direct descendant of many famous European rulers from different countries, such as Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (who reigned in Spain as Carlos I), King Louis XIV of France and Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. Therefore, he is related to all the current monarchs of Europe.

The current Spanish constitution refers to the monarchy as the crown of Spain and the constitutional title of the monarch is simply rey/reina de España: that is, king/queen of Spain. However, the constitution allows for the use of other historic titles pertaining to the Spanish monarchy, without specifying them. A decree promulgated 6 November 1987 at the Council of Ministers regulates the titles further, and on that basis the monarch of Spain has a right to use (may use) those other titles appertaining to the Crown. Contrary to some belief, the long titulary that contains the list of over 20 kingdoms, etc., is not in state use, nor is it used in Spanish diplomacy. In fact, it has never been in use in that form, as Spain was never a part of the list in pre-1837 era when the long list was officially used.

Spain, unmentioned in titulary for more than three centuries, was symbolized by the long list that started ...of Castile, Leon, Aragon,... - The following long titulary in the feudal style was the last used officially in 1836 by Isabella II of Spain (see the account of titulary in her article) before she became constitutional queen.

Other honours
He has been the recipient of numerous honorary degrees, including from University of Santo Tomas, Philippines, Southern Methodist University (where, in 2001, he formally opened the Meadows Museum, housing the largest collection of Spanish art outside Spain), and St. Mary's University, Texas. Juan Carlos also has received honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from New York University, and University of Utrecht, the Netherlands (25 October 2001) . In 1997, NYU opened the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center (to promote research and teaching on Spain and the Spanish-speaking world) in the historic Judson Hall and adjacent buildings on Washington Square in New York City. He is also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution organization.

US Aid to Israel Not Worth the Real Cost, Researcher Says

Israel is paying through the nose for US aid and would better off without it, says a researcher for the Jerusalem Institute for Market Studies (JIMS).American aid to Israel to the tune of $3 billion a year has been maligned by many U.S. conservatives and by the Arab world, but Israel actually loses more than it receives, according to JIMS analyst Yarden Gazit.U.S. aid is a net loss for Israel and Israel would be better off without it, he concluded in his report, released on Wednesday.Gazit explained that the conditions for the military assistance are designed to help the American military-industrial complex at the expense of the Israeli defense industry.

One condition of the American aid to Israel is that three-quarters of the grant be spent in the United States. The buy US requirement causes Israel to buy defense products at a high price, sometimes even products Israel may not need,Gazit wrote. He calculated the loss to the Israeli defense industry at $600-750 million per year.
The use of American materials instead of those from Israel also hurts competitiveness in Israel and on the world market, according to JIMS. Not using domestic materials for the IDF hurts Israeli industry’s reputation on the international market and may cause a loss of sales, the report added.JIMS forecasts that if Israel does not forfeit the American aid, it risks losing out on the growing Chinese and Indian market for Israeli products. Those countries will be under pressure to shop in the United States in light of American economic problems and its bloated federal budget.Gazit also pointed out that Israel is forced spend more than $3 billion a year to retain a qualitative edge over Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan, which also receives massive aid from the United States.Every dollar granted to Egypt requires Israel to spend between $1.60 and $2.10 to maintain the balance of power, according to JIMS.(IsraelNationalNews.com)

Brigitte Bardot, the former provocative French movie star-turned animal rights activist, has launched a campaign that would ban slaughtering procedures used by observant Jews and Muslims.Calling the religious slaughtering procedures Middle Age methods, her campaign includes distributing 2,000 posters in France, displaying the head of a cow and charging that religious ritual requires great suffering for animals.Christophe Marie, spokesman for 77-year-old Bardot, denied that the campaign is aimed at Jews and Muslims. He said the only objective is to protect rights for animals. France is home to approximately 600,000 Jews and more than five million Muslims.Kosher slaughtering requires that the animal’s throat be slit under the supervision of rabbis, who make sure that the knife is sharp and that the animals suffer as little as possible. The method has been defended as humane to animals, but animal rights activists claim that the animal first should be stunned, an act that would make it unfit for slaughtering under Jewish and Muslim law.

Several European countries, as well as New Zealand, have suggested banning kosher slaughtering procedures. The European Union officially requires stunning but allows exceptions for religious reasons.Switzerland has banned kosher slaughtering methods since 1893, and the method was banned under Nazi Germany until the Allied Forces' victory towards the end of World War II. EU considers increase of bail-out fund, as debt crisis rumbles on

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Against a background of growing fears that the eurozone's rescue fund would be insufficient should Spain or Belgium knock on its doors, the European Union's economy chief has called for a hike in the effective lending capacity of the EU's bail-out mechanism. We need to review all options for the size and scope of our financial backstops - not only for the current ones but also for the permanent European stability mechanism too,EU economics and monetary affairs commissioner Olli Rehn wrote on Wednesday in an opinion piece in the Financial Times.

The commissioner issued the call after member-state representatives met in the European capital to discuss proposals to boost the fund ahead of a meeting of European finance ministers next week.Mr Rehn also issued a stark warning that for all the deficit-slashing austerity measures that European states have so far imposed, it is not enough.There is insufficient ambition and a lack of urgency in implementation. That needs to change, he wrote.The commissioner called for Europe to embrace structural reforms to bring an end to the debt crisis this year.He wants to see changes to tax and benefit systems, reform of labour markets and pension provision, a loosening of business regulation and more investment in innovation.This calls for a comprehensive response by the whole EU and for bold fiscal and structural measures in all member states, he said.He issued the call ahead of the unveiling of the European Commission's first annual growth survey, essentially a template with spending recommendations for EU member states, published as part of an effort to bring European-level coherence to national budgetary plans.On Tuesday, representatives of EU member states in Brussels also considered an increase in the effective lending capacity of European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF).

While the EFSF kitty amounts to €440 billion, as more countries become borrowers from rather than guarantors of the fund, the actual capacity of the fund currently sits at roughly €250 billion.Some governments favour a hike in the effective lending capacity to the full €440 billion, while others are looking to a doubling of the fund. But to do so would require further credit guarantees from eurozone states in a less precarious situation, notably Germany and France.No decision was taken ahead of a finance ministers' meeting next Monday, however.Member states are considering expanding the role of the EFSF to permit the common purchase of government bonds, an exercise which is currently the competence of the European Central Bank.According to EU sources, any decision on the matter hinges on the result of government bond auctions this week, particularly Portugal's trip to the market.On Wednesday, Lisbon is to attempt to raise up to €1.25 billion in 10-year bonds from investors. The yield on Portuguese debt has hit record levels in recent days, although the pressure eased off this week, most likely as a result of ECB purchases of government debt. Should the yield at auction be too onerous, Portugal is likely to ask for a bail-out.

On Tuesday, Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates continued to insist his government was not in need of any assistance. Portugal won't ask for any financial help because it's not necessary, he said.Spain for its part on Thursday is to try to raise some €2.5 billion in five-year bonds.Also on Tuesday, Japan announced it was to buy a fifth of the eurozone's first bond issue.Japanese finance minister Minister Yoshihiko Noda said his government was to purchase more than 20 percent of a bond offering by the EFSF, to take place later this month.The move comes in the wake of an announcement last week by China to buy Spanish bonds.

The measures are contained in a list of revenue-saving measures outlined in a Liberal position paper published on Tuesday (11 January), relating to the EU's future multi-annual financial framework (MFF), post 2013.Possible savings can be made by fundamentally restructuring certain parts of the EU administration, such as the Committee of Regions ... [and] abolishing the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and others, says the document. The group also calls for the European Parliament's shuttling between Brussels and Strasbourg to come to an end through the creation of just one fixed seat, together with spending cuts for EU programmes whose aims have already been achieved or whose goals are dubious, such as support for tobacco production. In response, EESC officials stressed that their institution's budget is tiny, representing just 2.56 percent of the EU's overall administrative budget, and brings important added-value to the union's work. Europe's post-2013 financial framework has already proved contentious, with the battle set to increase this year.Leaders from Britain, France, Germany, Finland and the Netherlands sent an open letter to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso last December, calling for any rise in the size of the post-2013 multi-annual framework to remain below inflation.Parliament's Liberals on the other hand want a redirecting of current funding, away from areas such as agriculture and towards the EU's 2020 strategy for growth and jobs.At the same time, more recently joined EU member states are calling for their EU farm payments to be brought into line with older members. Latvian farmers currently receive €98 per hectare in direct payments, while Greek farmers receive €580.An unofficial Latvian position paper on CAP reform, seen by EUobserver, calls for the creation of new upper and lower limits, under which per hectare payments would vary between €200 and €300, depending on farming costs and per capita GDP in a specific country.

Latvian centre-right MP Imants Liegis, in Brussels on Tuesday to speak to EU agriculture commissioner Dacian Ciolos, said Europe's poorest regions must be protected.Even if the CAP budget were decreased, we would hope that Latvian farmers would still receive increased payments,he said. Solidarity should also prevail in Europe's cohesion policy payments.The European Commission is due to come forward with formal proposals on the EU's next long-term budget and farm policy before the summer.

Eurosceptics fail to amend British bill on EU

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - British Prime Minister David Cameron has survived an initial challenge from eurosceptic Conservative MPs who are demanding a more hawkish version of the government-proposed bill on the European Union. The bill - known as the 'referendum lock' - states that substantial EU treaty changes must first be approved by UK voters in a referendum, but Tory MPs who failed to secure a number of amendments on Tuesday (11 January) say the bill has been watered down to appease pro-European coalition partners, the Liberal Democrats. Conservative Europe minister David Lidington had earlier tried to allay rebel concerns, saying the legislation would shore up sovereignty and give ministers almost no wriggle room on the European question.Any future changes to EU treaties, however minor, will need to be ratified by a full act of parliament, Mr Lidington told the BBC. For the first time ever ... parliament has the final say in deciding whether EU law has effect in the United Kingdom.But rebel MPs argue that the government bill merely restates the current position, calling on Tuesday for an amendment that declares the sovereignty of the British Parliament in relation to EU laws. The call was rejected by 314 votes to 39.

Further proposed changes are to be debated by Westminster in the coming days, including a demand by some Tory rebels to ensure a referendum on Britain's EU membership be held if British voters reject an EU treaty at any point in the future.
The debate this week has served as a reminder of the British Conservative party's difficult relationship with the European Union, with party infighting plaguing the former leaderships of Margaret Thatcher and John Major in the 1980s and 90s. Mr Cameron surprised many by opting to pull his party out of the European Parliament's centre-right European People's Party grouping in 2009, shifting to an anti-federalist group instead, and since coming to power last year has persistently rallied against the EU's creeping budget increases.Washington has made it clear to London in recent years however that it wants its strategic partner to be a central member of the EU, thereby maximising its influence.China has also sought to lean on the UK to deliver its message in Brussels.International trade representative Gao Hucheng urged Britain on Tuesday to lobby for an easing of EU controls on high-tech exports to China. The 27-member union restricts high-tech exports to China, with Western business executives frequently complaining about what they perceive as inadequate intellectual property rights protection in the Asian powerhouse economy.

Now that the contrived idea that heated political rhetoric from conservatives has been rejected as a motivation behind Jared Lee Loughner’s tragic rampage in which Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was targeted, Loughner’s documented obsession with Giffords indicates that he may have been infatuated with the Arizona Democrat.We now know that 22-year-old Loughner was in contact with Giffords since at least 2007, having attended a Congress on Your Corner event and subsequently receiving a thank you letter from Giffords’ office that was discovered by police in a safe at Loughner’s home on which Loughner had scrawled Die Cops and Die Bitch, along with handwritten notes by Loughner stating that he had planned ahead and that the rampage was my assassination.According to a friend, it was Giffords’ treatment of Loughner at that 2007 event that first aggravated the young man who went on to attempt to murder the Congresswoman.Loughner’s characterization by those who knew him as someone who wasn’t especially political, indicates that his preoccupation with Giffords went beyond any of the issues in which she was involved in Arizona. Indeed, forum postings leaked to the Wall Street Journal confirm that,Mr. Loughner never mentions any political views explicitly, nor does he name any political figures.Why would someone with little interest in politics be so interested in meeting and communicating with a Congresswoman? Did Loughner have feelings for Giffords that were burned when Giffords supposedly mistreated him at the 2007 event?

It has now come to light that Loughner’s anger was fostered in part from being rejected by women. Messages posted on a gaming forum show that Loughner expressed his frustration with getting the brush off.On May 5, he started a thread titled Talk, Talk, Talking about Rejection. He solicited stories of rejection by the opposite sex. The next day he wrote, Its funny…when..they say lets go on a date about 3 times..and they dont….go… Three days later, he wrote, Its funny when your 60 wondering……what happen at 21.Since the tragic shootings, we have also learned that Giffords’ You Tube channel was subscribed to Loughner’s You Tube channel which contained his inane ramblings about mind control and his frustration with people’s use of language and grammar. This connection is made even more bizarre by the fact that Giffords is only subscribed to one other person, another Congressman, therefore her subscribing to Loughner’s channel could not have been an accident.

Unsurprisingly, Giffords’ subscription to her own attempted assassin’s You Tube page was scrubbed almost immediately after the shootings.Loughner’s obsession with Giffords is proven, and whether that was borne out of his frustrated feelings for the Congresswoman is sure to be explored in more detail as a clearer picture of the gunman’s motives emerges.

The establishment media campaign to crassly exploit the tragic Arizona shootings as a way to bludgeon the First Amendment and silence critics of the Obama administration has failed spectacularly, with even a majority of Democrats telling a CBS poll that violent political rhetoric was not to blame for the actions of a mentally disturbed madman.Within minutes of Saturday’s shootings and before the identity of the gunman was even known, establishment mouthpieces like the New York Times and MSNBC, backed up by statist blogs like Huffington Post and the Daily Kos, instantly seized upon the bloodshed to blame the events on tea partiers and what they termed violent right-wing rhetoric.This prompted leftist talking heads, enthusiastically backed by the Associated Press, to contrive a phony national debate about toning down the rhetoric, which as we explained, was a mere ploy to politicize the shootings to eviscerate free speech and dissent against big government.This agenda was made brazenly transparent by the actions of Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, who has been heavily criticized for giving a speech shortly after the shootings in which he accused irresponsible political rhetoric of conservatives, in particular radio and TV talk show hosts, for the murders of six people.

Even after it emergedthat shooter Jared Lee Loughner was a drug-using, Communist Manifesto-reading occultist whom his classmates had described as being left-wing, the effort to link the events with political opponents of big government continued unabated.Unfortunately for the architects of this national hoax, a clear majority of the American people just aren’t buying it.A CBS News nationwide telephone poll found that, 57 percent of respondents said the harsh political tone had nothing to do with the shooting, compared to 32 percent who felt it did.Even a majority of Democrats say that political rhetoric had nothing to do with the shooting.Among Democrats 49 percent placed no blame on the heated political tone against 42 percent who did. Among independents the split was 56 percent to 33 percent, CBS said.Amongst Republican voters, just 19 per cent blamed political rhetoric for the massacre, versus 69 per cent who rejected such a link.The fact that Americans are not buying the tone down the rhetoric ploy means that Target, Cupid, Fruit Punch, and other examples of violent hate speech will probably survive, at least until they are blamed for the actions of another mentally ill psychotic, clearly motivated by nothing other than his own inner demons.

Editor’s comment: We are not fans of Sarah Palin, but almost everything she writes in this rebuttal is on the money.Like millions of Americans I learned of the tragic events in Arizona on Saturday, and my heart broke for the innocent victims. No words can fill the hole left by the death of an innocent, but we do mourn for the victims’ families as we express our sympathy.I agree with the sentiments shared yesterday at the beautiful Catholic mass held in honor of the victims. But less than a week after Congresswoman Giffords reaffirmed our protected freedoms, another member of Congress announced that he would propose a law that would criminalize speech he found offensive.

It is in the hour when our values are challenged that we must remain resolved to protect those values. Recall how the events of 9-11 challenged our values and we had to fight the tendency to trade our freedoms for perceived security. And so it is today.Let us honor those precious lives cut short in Tucson by praying for them and their families and by cherishing their memories. Let us pray for the full recovery of the wounded. And let us pray for our country. In times like this we need God’s guidance and the peace He provides. We need strength to not let the random acts of a criminal turn us against ourselves, or weaken our solid foundation, or provide a pretext to stifle debate.America must be stronger than the evil we saw displayed last week. We are better than the mindless finger-pointing we endured in the wake of the tragedy. Floods turn major Australian city into ghost town

BRISBANE, Australia – Inch by inch, block by block, floods consumed Australia's third-largest city, creeping across suburban yards Wednesday and streaming through downtown streets darkened by power outages and largely emptied of people.The waters poured into Brisbane, topping traffic lights on some streets, after marching across Queensland state for weeks. Roads shut throughout the city, and people moved about in kayaks, rowboats and even on surfboards. Boats torn from their moorings floated down an engorged river.Residents of the city's low-lying areas headed in the thousands for higher ground, while others chose to ride it out as the waters approached their expected peak early Thursday morning.Some neighbors in East Brisbane fired up a barbecue, put some beer on ice and starting grilling sausages while watching the water spill from a picturesque creek and creep up the gentle slope toward their homes.We're having a bit of a barbecue because we've got no electricity, said Bob Vilgan, an 80-something dressed like most of the neighbors in shorts, a T-shirt and sandals. The idea is to get everyone fed who is in with our crowd, have a few tiny tipples and get back home.The flooding, which has killed 22 people since late November, has submerged dozens of towns — some three times — and left an area the size of Germany and France combined under water. Highways and rail lines have been washed away in the disaster, which is shaping up to Australia's costliest ever.

With at least 43 people missing, the death toll is expected to rise. Many of those unaccounted for disappeared from around Toowoomba, a city west of Brisbane that saw massive flash floods sweep away cars, road signs and people. Twelve died in that flood alone.The toll has shocked Australians, no strangers to deadly natural disasters like the wildfires that killed 173 in a single day two years ago.One tale has particularly transfixed the country: a 13-year-old boy caught in the flood who told strangers to save his 10-year-old brother first and died as a result.Jordan and Blake Rice were in the car with their mother, Donna, when a wall of water pummeled Toowoomba on Monday. After the torrent of water knocked one rescuer over, another man managed to reach the car, The Australian newspaper reported. At Jordan's insistence, he pulled Blake out first, according to a third brother, Kyle.Courage kicked in, and he would rather his little brother would live, the 16-year-old told the newspaper. Jordan and his mother were washed away before the men were able to get back to them. By Wednesday, Jordan's name was among the top 10 most used terms on Twitter, as a wave of tweets hailed him as a true hero of the Queensland floods.

In contrast to the wall of water that swallowed Toowoomba, Brisbane's crisis has been marked by the waters' slow but steady progress.I was quite panicked after seeing Toowoomba, said Ali Cook, one of the neighbors at the East Brisbane barbecue. But it's been such a slow rise. It's still rising quite a lot.On Wednesday, emergency sirens blared across Brisbane as the floodwaters entered an empty downtown and began swamping neighborhoods.The surging, muddy waters reached the tops of traffic lights in some parts of Brisbane, and Mayor Campbell Newman said at least 20,000 homes would likely be damaged. Brisbane's office buildings stood empty Wednesday with the normally bustling central business district transformed into a watery ghost town.Police went door-to-door in some neighborhoods advising people to leave. Five evacuation centers were open with room for 16,000 people.The Brisbane River is expected to reach its height on Thursday, at a depth slightly lower the that of 1974 floods that swept the city. Bligh said the news was welcome, but of little comfort.This is still a major event, the city is much bigger, much more populated and has many parts under flood that didn't even exist in 1974, she said. We are still looking at an event which will cripple parts of our city.The waters have overwhelmed a dam built to protect the city after the 1974 deluge. Officials have opened the floodgates of the dam to prevent a greater disaster, contributing to the flooding downtown.Though the full extent of the damage won't be known until the water is gone, even before Brisbane was threatened, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh estimated a cleanup and rebuilding to total around $5 billion.

Add to that, the damage to economy: Queensland's coal industry has virtually shut down, costing millions in deferred exports and sending global prices higher. Vegetables, fruit and sugarcane crops in the rich agricultural region have been wiped out, and prices are due to skyrocket as a result. Water levels were expected to stay at peak levels until at least Saturday, but many people won't be able to access their homes for several days beyond that, Bligh said.Energex, Brisbane's main power company, started switching off electricity to some parts of the city as a precaution against electrocution. Almost 70,000 homes were without power across Queensland by Wednesday afternoon, Bligh said.Residents who had spent two days preparing took cover on higher ground while others scrambled to move their prized possessions to the top floors of their homes. Torrential rain, floods in Rio leave 58 dead

RIO DE JANEIRO – Authorities in Rio de Janeiro say 58 people have died in the mudslides and flash floods that followed torrential rain overnight.The mayor of the mountain town of Teresopolis just north of Rio says in a statement Wednesday that 48 people died, and more than 1,000 have been left homeless.Civil defense officials for Rio state say eight died in the neighboring town of Nova Friburgo, including four firefighters. An elderly couple died in Petropolis.The death count is expected to rise officials reach the steep mountain flanks and washed-out valleys in the region.
Rio's governor Sergio Cabral says he's called on the navy to lend helicopters to rescue workers.

18 die in floods, mudslides in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – Sri Lanka's government says five more people have died in widespread floods and mudslides, pushing the death toll to 18 from days of heavy rains.The Disaster Management Center says nearly 200,000 people, mostly in Eastern Province, have lost their homes because of the flooding. Most are now living in camps.It says most of dead either drowned or were buried in mudslides.Schools in several affected provinces remain closed.President Mahinda Rajapaksa was forced to abandon a trip Wednesday to survey the flood damage because of the bad weather.

Hezbollah and allies resign, toppling Lebanon government

BEIRUT (Reuters) – Ministers from Hezbollah and its Lebanese allies resigned on Wednesday, toppling the government of Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri before expected indictments against the Shi'ite group over the killing of Hariri's father.Lebanese politicians had said on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia and Syria failed to reach a deal to contain tensions over the U.N.-backed tribunal, which is expected to issue draft indictments soon over the 2005 assassination of Rafik al-Hariri.The ministers resigned as Saad al-Hariri was meeting U.S. President Barack Obama in Washington.

The militant Shi'ite Hezbollah has denied any role in the killing. Its leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, has attacked the tribunal as an Israeli project and urged Hariri to renounce it. The Sunni Muslim premier has resisted Hezbollah's demand.
Clearing the way for the formation of a new government ... the ministers present their resignation, hoping that the president will quickly take the required steps for forming a new government, said Gebran Bassil, a Christian government minister speaking for Hezbollah and its allies.Stalemate over the tribunal has crippled Hariri's 14-month-old unity government. The cabinet has met, briefly, just once in the last two months and the government could not secure parliamentary approval for the 2010 budget.A U.S. official said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had talked to officials in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and France, seeking international backing for the tribunal.She's already been talking to the Egyptians, the Saudis, the French and others about having an international consensus about supporting Lebanon and ... the tribunal, a senior U.S. government official told reporters on Clinton's plane as it landed in the Gulf state of Qatar.

The official said Clinton planned to raise the Lebanon issue urgently with Gulf Arab leaders meeting there.Tensions over the tribunal have exacerbated existing rifts between Hariri, who is supported by Western powers and Saudi Arabia, and Hezbollah, backed by Iran and Syria.Analysts say the resignations could set the stage for protracted political turmoil in Lebanon, which has endured a series of crises since Rafik al-Hariri's killing, including assassinations and sectarian street fighting in Beirut in 2008.You definitely have increased rhetoric, but whether that is matched by a slip toward a bad security situation is not pre-determined, said Karim Makdisi, a teacher of international relations at the American University of Beirut.Bassil, the Christian government minister allied to Hezbollah, said Hariri had rejected demands for an urgent cabinet session to discuss Hezbollah's insistence that Lebanon withdraw all cooperation with the special tribunal.The grace period has ended, and the waiting stage that we lived through without any result has ended, he told Reuters.On Tuesday, Hezbollah minister Mohammad Fneish accused the United States of obstructing attempts by Riyadh and Damascus to find a solution. There were Arab efforts that gave us the chance to work positively... These efforts have not worked because of American intervention, he said.Political scientist Hilal Khashan said Washington had vetoed the Saudi-Syrian initiative and there was little prospect of a new government being formed quickly.

The Saudi-Syrian proposals were never spelt out by either country. According to a politician close to Hariri, they would have involved a Hezbollah pledge not to resort to violence if any of its members were indicted, while Hariri would ensure that any indictment was not exploited to Hezbollah's political detriment.Khashan said Hezbollah was unlikely to repeat the events of May 2008, when gunmen took over Beirut in protest over government steps against the Shi'ite movement, but he did not rule out demonstrations. The phenomenon of food riots is spreading in the Arab world, so the opposition may shield itself behind popular demands for combating inflation, he said.Beirut's bourse fell 3.22 percent in response to the political turmoil, with shares in market heavyweight Solidere, which has led the reconstruction of Beirut since the 1975-90 civil war, dropping as much as 8.0 percent.(Because) the agreement between Saudi Arabia and Syria was blocked, we have seen a sell-off, said Louis Karam, senior investment adviser at Arab Finance Corporation.But Marwan Barakat, head of research at Lebanon's Bank Audi, said that Lebanon's substantial foreign reserves and high levels of liquidity in the banking sector meant that it had a formidable defense line to protect its currency. Talks could be West's last chance: Iran envoy

TEHRAN (Reuters) – Talks next week between Iran and major powers concerned about its nuclear program could be the last chance for the West because Tehran's atomic capability is improving, a senior Iranian official was quoted as saying.Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Tehran's nuclear ambassador, raised the stakes for the January 21-22 meeting with the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany, which want assurances that Iran is not trying to develop nuclear weapons.Once Iran can make its own fuel for a research reactor, which it has said will happen this year, it may not return to negotiations if the talks to be held in Istanbul fail, the official IRNA news agency quoted him as saying on Wednesday.It might be the last chance because by installing fuel rods produced by Iran in the core of the Tehran Research Reactor, probably parliament will not allow the government to negotiate or send its uranium outside the country and the Istanbul meeting might be the last chance for the West to return to talks.Soltanieh later told Reuters in Vienna: If the first fuel will be ready, goes to the heart of the reactor, then what do we need negotiation (for) ... therefore the other side should come to the negotiating table as soon as possible.Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has the ultimate say on its nuclear policy and diplomacy.

A similar round of talks concluded in October 2009 with a tentative pact for Iran to export some of its low-enriched uranium in exchange for fuel rods made from higher-enriched, 20 percent uranium to run the reactor which makes medical isotopes.But that deal, meant as a confidence-building step leading to further talks, unraveled when Tehran backed away from the terms, ultimately triggering a new wave of sanctions which some analysts say helped push Tehran back to the negotiating table.
Acting Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said on Saturday Iran would be able to produce its own fuel material for the Tehran reactor later this year, making any swap deal lose its meaning.

BLUFF?

Bruno Tertrais, Senior Research Fellow at the Foundation for Strategic Research in Paris, said Soltanieh's statement was largely bluff.In any case, Mr Soltanieh's argument is reversible -- we could always say it's the last chance for Iran, said Tertrais.When I say bluff, I mean I am not at all certain that Iran has the technical capacity to make the fuel necessary for this type of reactor, he said, echoing the general assessment of Western officials and nuclear experts.The U.N. Security Council has urged Iran since 2006 to suspend its uranium enrichment -- which yields fuel for nuclear reactors or, if done to a much higher level, for nuclear bomb -- in exchange for a packet of economic and diplomatic incentives.Iran is still awaiting replies from some of the countries it invited to tour its nuclear sites ahead of the talks, in what it calls a demonstration of its openness and peaceful intentions.Of the countries involved in the Istanbul talks, the European Union rejected the invitation and the United States was not invited, saying it was for U.N. nuclear watchdog specialists to inspect Iranian nuclear installations.That left only China and Russia as possible attendees from the six-power group. Soltanieh told Reuters envoys from Venezuela, the Arab League, Egypt as chair of the Non-Aligned Movement, Syria and others would come on the planned Jan 15-16 trip.
Asked whether Russia and China would also be among them, he said: We are waiting, they have not said no.
