Women are always going to come out on top when it comes to survival,” said Moalem in Zoom call with The Times of Israel.Over the course of his research Moalem learned that women are more resilient and have more intellect and stamina because they possess a more complicated biology — not because of behavior.While people inherit one X chromosome from their mother at conception, it is the chromosome received from the father that determines biological sex. And then we saw it’s the same mortality rate regardless of smoking. In fact, you are somewhat protected if you smoke, to the point that in ICUs there are clinical trials using nicotine patches.It’s only when they realized that if 60% of men in China smoke but only 10 or 20% of the men in ICUs were current smokers that it’s obviously not behavioral. Luckily, people followed up on it. So it just shows you if we’re stuck with this behavioral outlook it anchors us in a negative way. It keeps us from developing new therapeutics.According to your research women are better at producing antibodies. Is this something pharmaceutical companies are looking at while developing therapeutics and vaccines against COVID?No. They’re not looking at this. When it comes to clinical trials, women are often not included in large enough numbers to give us an idea of what is happening. After much wrangling, German doctors were being allowed access to him, an associate said.Navalny, a 44-year-old politician and corruption investigator who is one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s fiercest critics, was admitted to an intensive care unit in a coma in the Siberian city of Omsk on Thursday, following what his supporters are calling a suspected poisoning that they believe was engineered by the Kremlin.A plane with German specialists and all the necessary equipment landed at Omsk airport on Friday morning, prepared to take Navalny to a top clinic in Berlin. But doctors at the hospital said his condition was too unstable to transport him.Navalny’s supporters denounced the medical verdict as a ploy by the authorities to “stall and wait” until the suspected poison no longer is traceable in his system. But a chief doctor in Omsk said the physicians who are treating Navalny didn’t “believe the patient suffered from poisoning.”Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he wasn’t aware of any instructions to stop the transfer and that it was purely a medical decision that doctors made based on Navalny’s condition.“It may pose a threat to his health,” Peskov said.Leonid Volkov, a close associated of Navalny, said Friday that German doctors now have access to him.“The German doctors who came on this flight, from Nuremberg, who were refused to get access to this patient finally just got access to him several minutes ago,” Volkov said during a news conference in Berlin.Volkov said even though that was good news, Navalny’s family and allies were still lacking any reliable “independent data” on his condition and were standing by their demand that he needs to be brought to Germany for examination.“We are still very far away from having this situation resolved,” he said.Navalny fell ill on a flight back to Moscow from the Siberian city of Tomsk on Thursday and was taken to the hospital after the plane made an emergency landing in Omsk. There could be more charges coming related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged sexual abuse of dozens of girls and young women.In a filing Friday, federal prosecutors indicated that the federal grand jury investigation into Epstein, his alleged madam Ghislaine Maxwell and their potential co-conspirators remains active.Maxwell was charged in July in the Southern District of New York with four counts of sexual trafficking of a minor related to allegedly recruiting and grooming three girls between 1994 and 1997 for Epstein to abuse. She is accused of participating in the abuse of one of the girls.Maxwell is seeking to use what her lawyers have described as “critical new information” that they obtained from the government in the criminal case to block the release of her 2016 deposition from a separate federal defamation suit that was brought by Virginia Giuffre, an alleged victim of Epstein and Maxwell, in 2015. The suit was settled in 2017, but the Miami Herald and others have fought to have materials from the case unsealed, arguing that they should have been public in the first place.Federal prosecutors argued in the filing Friday that if Maxwell gains permission to release the information she’d like to put forth it would jeopardize their ongoing investigation.It isn’t clear whether that investigation could potentially lead to more charges against Maxwell, charges against Epstein’s other alleged schedulers and handlers or prosecution of high-profile friends of the multimillionaire.“As the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has stated publicly, the investigation into the conduct of the defendant in this case and other possible co-conspirators of Jeffrey Epstein remains active,” prosecutors wrote. “The full scope and details of that investigation, however, have not been made public.”David S. The closest event was in 1933, when a major hurricane made landfall in south Texas while a separate hurricane weakened to a tropical storm after crossing the Florida Peninsula, the NHC said.The last time two cyclones were in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico was in 2002, when Tropical Storm Fay and Tropical Depression Edouard overlapped for about 18 hours, according to the NHC.Tropical Storm Laura and a separate tropical depression brewing near Honduras could approach the Gulf Coast as hurricanes next week in an area spanning Texas to the Florida Panhandle, according to the National Hurricane Center.Meteorologists say there is still a lot of uncertainty around the systems and how they develop and move in coming days, particularly as they cross land.Both storms currently look on track to remain separate, however, any interaction between the two could change their intensity or trajectory, said Dan Kottlowski of AccuWeather. Two tropical systems are on a path toward the Gulf of Mexico and could possibly make landfall around the same time in the U.S. early next week.The latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center depicts two hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday.There are only a few times, according to NOAA, when two tropical cyclones have been in the Gulf at the same time. The most recent example was in 1959.Tropical Storm Laura developed in the Atlantic near the northeastern Caribbean Islands on Friday morning, while Tropical Depression 14 was in the western Caribbean near Honduras Friday.In the near term, Laura will be hitting the northern Leeward Islands on Friday night and Puerto Rico on Saturday. Tropical Depression 14 will bring heavy rain and gusty winds to parts of the Yucatan Peninsula on Saturday as well.It's too soon to talk details or impacts for the Gulf Coast region, however, the forecast later this weekend will be able to give more specifics.Laura will approach the Texas and Louisiana coastline as a possible Category 1 hurricane with winds of 75 mph on Tuesday.Tropical Storm Laura has sustained winds of 45 mph and was moving west at 17 mph Friday afternoon.Tropical storm warnings are in effect from the northern Leeward Island to Puerto Rico and the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. With the passage of the budget seen as impossible with the time left to do so, the only realistic option is giving final approval to a bill to delay the budget deadline by 100 days. Such a bill has been approved in its first of three plenum readings, but Likud is making various demands in order to support its final passage. Germany welcomed military aircraft from Israel to its airspace on Thursday in their first joint combat exercises in German territory, as both air forces praised the intensive cooperation between the two countries.“It was very emotional for us when, one after the other, the first Israeli jets arrived here in German airspace,” a spokesman for the German Luftwaffe told the German news agency dpa.“Nowadays, we have a very intense partnership with the Israelis,” spokesman Thorsten Weber said. “We work closely together, we do exercises together, German soldiers are being trained in Israel.”Israeli Air Force pilot Lt. Colonel O., who didn’t give his full name in line with the military branch’s regulations, said that during the exercises he remembered the difficult past of Germans and Jews while also looking to the future.During the Third Reich, Nazi Germany murdered 6 million European Jews and others in the Holocaust. SAN FRANCISCO (J. the Jewish News of Northern California via JTA) — When the evacuation orders came Wednesday night, Guerneville resident Sonia Tubridy and her daughter packed the car and left, joining a caravan of vehicles fleeing the North Bay area and the fires that threatened to engulf them.Tubridy, cultural director of the Russian River Jewish Community, was among the thousands of people ordered to evacuate from fires burning 46,000 acres across a vast area covering five counties and stretching from Vacaville north to Lake Berryessa and out to the Sonoma County coast. Dubbed the “LNU Lightning Complex” by Cal Fire, the danger zone has required mandatory evacuations in Napa, Sonoma and Solano counties and continues to expand.Tubridy described the evacuation process as hectic.We were in a stream of traffic leaving River Road,” she said from near Bodega Bay, where she and her daughter were temporarily taking refuge for the day. “Thousands of cars going five miles per hour.”With hot and windy weather forecast, more evacuations are expected, especially for areas south of the fires, according to a Cal Fire press conference this morning.“If you think you’re in danger, please be ready to go,” Sonoma County Sheriff Mark Essick said.Rabbi Chaim Zaklos of Chabad of Solano County is one of those who was prepared and waiting for the call this morning. SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) — Wildfires that blackened skies, took at least five lives and forced tens of thousands of people from their homes have blazed through California — straining firefighting resources by the sheer vastness of the battle lines.Three major collections of fires — dozens in all — carved their way Thursday through forests, canyons and rural areas in the San Francisco Bay Area and central California.Tens of thousands of homes were threatened by flames that drove through dense and bone-dry trees and brush. Many of the fires were sparked by lightning strikes from brief thunderstorms this week as a high-pressure area over the West brought a dangerous mix of triple-digit weather and monsoonal moisture pulled from the south.Some fires doubled in size within 24 hours, fire officials said.And while some evacuations were lifted in the small city of Vacaville, between San Francisco and Sacramento, other areas expanded their evacuation areas. The University of California, Santa Cruz was evacuated and a new fire burning near Yosemite National Park also prompted evacuations.Santa Cruz itself, a coastal city of 65,000, wasn't affected but Mayor Justin Cummings urged residents Thursday evening to be prepared to evacuate by gassing up their vehicles and packing important documents, medicines and other belongings.“Prepare early so that you are ready to go at a moment's notice," Cummings said.Although temperatures were predicted to ease slightly on Friday, they were also expected to be hot enough so that firefighters will not be able to count on cool evening weather aiding them. Erratic winds also could drive the fires unpredictably in multiple directions, state fire officials said.“There’s so much heat in these fires that they create their own wind ... and they may blow in any direction, and very erratically," said Daniel Berlant, an assistant deputy director with the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, also known as Cal Fire.Winds gusting to 20 mph (32 kph) over ridge tops could challenge the overnight firefighting efforts in Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties, said the incident commander, Cal Fire Assistant Chief Billy See.“This country likes to burn at night, more so than during the day, and that’s because of the wind patterns,” he said.Nearly 50,000 people were ordered evacuated in those counties.The ferocity of the fires was astonishing so early in the fire season, which historically has seen the largest and deadliest blazes when gusty Santa Ana winds start blowing over the next two months.But the death toll already had reached at least five since the majority of blazes started less than a week ago.Berlant said three civilians died in Napa County and one died in neighboring Solano County since the fires began. They packed a change of clothes, their children’s school supplies and their passports — just in case.They learned Wednesday that their house had burned. Birth certificates, legal documents, and family heirlooms are gone. But in photos of the ruins, they were surprised by how many redwoods, oaks and fruit trees were still standing.“It’s a strange sort of comfort,” Tim Roberts said.The good news for Brookdale resident Larissa Eisenstein Thursday afternoon was that her five chickens, Kelly and The Nuggets, had been safely relocated into a stranger’s yard in a safer, neighboring community.The chicken evacuation came a day after Eisenstein, a Silicon Valley tech worker, had been forced to leave them behind during an overnight evacuation. She fled with her cats Mochi and Mini, driving from one hotel to the next only to find they were full before landing in a safe place where they could get some rest.The bad news Thursday was that the fire was burning down her wooded street as she adjusted to the idea that her worldly possessions may now be limited to photos of her parents, some jewelry she had grabbed, and fresh tomatoes from her garden.“After I got the cats, I realized there was very little important to me, and the priority is to try to remember how lovely things can be," she said. “I’ve had a wonderful garden this year.”More than 10,000 firefighters were on the front lines.
