Netanyahu tells UAE Jews he hopes to visit them this year-Hailing start of ‘historic’ new era, premier says peace between nations will be good for all people of the region-By TOI staff-AUG 21,20-Today, 10:31 am

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with leaders of the United Arab Emirates’ Jewish community Thursday, a week after Israel and the Gulf nation agreed to normalize diplomatic ties.“This peace is good for the State Israel, good for our people and good for all peoples of the region,” he told them during a video call. “I hope to visit you this year, soon. If we can overcome the coronavirus pandemic I’ll be able to shake your hands too.”His office released a short video clip of the call, which was held in Hebrew.“We are at the start of a historic era… of widening peace between Israel and the Arab world,” Netanyahu also said in the clip.Participating in the call were Ross Kriel, the president of the Jewish Community of the Emirates congregation, as well as Chabad rabbi Levi Duchman and Solly Wolf, who lead a second congregation.Israel and the United Arab Emirates announced their agreement last Thursday afternoon. The sides “agreed to the full normalization of relations between Israel and the UAE,” they said in a joint statement with the US that was released by US President Donald Trump. The small Jewish community welcomed the agreement, saying it would “allow Israelis to visit the UAE and share our daily experience of… tolerance and pluralism that typifies the UAE.”In recent years, the UAE has made great efforts to portray itself as a tolerant country welcoming all religions, including Judaism. President Khalifa bin-Zayed al-Nahyan declared 2019 to be the “The Year of Tolerance” in the UAE. In this context, the country announced the building of a massive interfaith compound in Abu Dhabi that will also include a synagogue. The so-called Abrahamic Family House is slated to open in 2022.A Jewish community has been operating in Dubai for a decade, initially with tacit support but more recently with overt backing from the local authorities, and is currently in the process of officially becoming a licensed religious community.Estimates of how many Jews currently live in the UAE range from the low hundreds to 1,500. There are three different congregations — two Orthodox and one egalitarian.Raphael Ahren contributed to this report.

Russian doctors say Navalny wasn’t poisoned, refuse transfer to German hospital-Siberian hospital officials assert opposition leader too unstable to be evacuated, while allies assert authorities are stalling to prevent detection of poisoning-By AFP-FRI AUG 21,20-Today, 2:43 pm

MOSCOW (AP) — Family and allies of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who remains in a coma in a Siberian hospital, were fighting for his transfer to a German clinic on Friday as local doctors insisted the politician is too unstable to be medevaced and refuse to give authorization for the transfer.Navalny, a 44-year-old politician who is one of President Vladimir Putin’s fiercest critics, was admitted to an intensive care unit in a coma at a hospital in the Siberian city of Omsk on Thursday, following what his supporters are calling a suspected poisoning that they believe was engineered by the Kremlin.A plane with German specialists and all the necessary equipment landed at Omsk airport on Friday morning, prepared to take Navalny to a clinic in Berlin. But doctors treating the politician said his condition was too unstable to transport him and bristled at the idea of consulting with German specialists, saying that doctors that flew in from Moscow over night were competent enough.Omsk hospital deputy chief doctor Anatoly Kalinichenko also said that no traces of poison were found in Navalny’s body.“Poisoning as a diagnosis remains on the back burner, but we don’t believe that the patient suffered from poisoning,” Kalinichenko told reporters Friday.Kalinichenko added that a diagnosis had been determined and relayed to Navalny’s family members. He refused to reveal it to reporters, citing a law preventing medical workers from disclosing confidential patient information.Navalny’s spokesman, Kira Yarmysh, tweeted that the politician’s family wasn’t given a diagnosis, but rather “a range of symptoms that can be interpreted differently.”Alexander Murakhovsky, chief physician of the Omsk Ambulance Hospital No. 1, intensive care unit where Alexei Navalny was hospitalized speaks to the media in Omsk, Russia, Friday, Aug. 21, 2020 (AP Photo/Evgeniy Sofiychuk)-“Doctors still can’t determine the cause of Alexei’s condition,” she said.Navalny fell ill on a flight back to Moscow from the Siberian city of Tomsk on Thursday and was taken to the hospital after the plane made an emergency landing in Omsk. His team made arrangements to transfer him to Charité, a clinic in Berlin that has a history of treating famous foreign leaders or dissidents and insisted that the transfer is paramount to saving the politician’s life.“The ban on transferring Navalny is needed to stall and wait until the poison in his body can no longer be traced. Yet every hour of stalling creates a threat to his life,” Yarmysh tweeted.German officials have been in contact with both Russians and a private group that sent a plane to pick Navalny up, and support the initiative. “If Mr. Navalny wants to get treated in Berlin and if he is able to come to Berlin, the Charité hospital is obviously ready,” Berlin Mayor Michael Mueller told the German news agency dpa.Like many other opposition politicians in Russia, Navalny has been frequently detained by law enforcement and harassed by pro-Kremlin groups. In 2017, he was attacked by several men who threw antiseptic in his face, damaging an eye.Last year, Navalny was rushed to a hospital from prison, where he was serving a sentence following an administrative arrest, with what his team said was suspected poisoning. Doctors said he had a severe allergic attack and discharged him back to prison the following day.Navalny’s Foundation for Fighting Corruption has been exposing graft among government officials, including some at the highest level. Last month, he had to shut the foundation after a financially devastating lawsuit from Yevgeny Prigozhin, a businessman with close ties to the Kremlin. In this file photo taken on Saturday, July 20, 2019, Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny gestures while speaking to a crowd during a political protest in Moscow, Russia (AP Photo/Pavel Golovkin, File)-The most prominent member of Russia’s opposition, Navalny campaigned to challenge Putin in the 2018 presidential election, but was barred from running. He set up campaign offices across Russia and has been promoting opposition candidates in regional elections, challenging members of Russia’s ruling party, United Russia. One of his associates in Khabarovsk, a city in Russia’s Far East that has been engulfed in mass protests against the arrest of the region’s governor, was detained last week after calling for a strike at a rally.

‘It’s a miracle we’re ok,’ says Sderot man after rocket ‘cut the house in two’-Shlomo Malka of Sderot says he and his wife were asleep, didn’t hear siren, when Gaza missile smashed into their home-By TOI staff-AUG 21,20-Today, 2:06 pm 0

A man whose home in the southern city of Sderot suffered serious damage in a rocket attack from Gaza overnight said he believed he and his wife miraculously escaped after warning sirens failed to wake them.“It’s a miracle [that we’re okay],” Shlomo Malka told Hebrew media outlets. “We did not hear the alert at all, we were awoken by the explosion.”“It cut the house in two. It hit the roof of the secure room,” he said, referring to the shelter within the house. “Suddenly we heard explosions and smelled smoke. We ran to the police station,” he told the Ynet news site. “It was only after we left [the house] that we saw the destruction.”“It was very scary but luckily nobody was hurt. My granddaughters were supposed to come to stay for Shabbat but the whole kitchen has been destroyed. I still haven’t digested what has happened,” Malka said.View of damage to a house caused by a rocket attack on Sderot, August 21, 2020 (Flash90)-Pictures of the home showed the kitchen blown apart, windows smashed and large holes in the walls and roof.Reports indicated that the damage may have been caused by an unexploded rocket that hit the house or large pieces of shrapnel from an interception by the Iron Dome defense system.Twelve rockets were fired at southern Israel from the Strip on Thursday evening and in the early hours of Friday morning, the IDF said. Nine of them were intercepted by Iron Dome missile defense system.“We hold Hamas responsible for all terror activity emanating from Gaza,” the military added.Homeowner Osnat Malka inspects damage from a rocket fired overnight from the Gaza Strip, in Sderot, Israel, Aug. 21, 2020 (AP Photo/Tsafrir Abayov)-The rockets marked a major escalation, even as tensions have ramped up over the past several weeks with sporadic rocket fire and hundreds of balloons carrying incendiary devices being launched toward Israel. The Israel Defense Forces said it carried out three sets of strikes overnight and in the early hours of the morning in response to rocket fire, targeting underground infrastructure belonging to Hamas, a cement facility used to provide materials for tunnels dug by Gazan terror groups and a site where rockets are produced.

Coalition chair: If nothing dramatic changes in next 48 hours, it’s elections-Likud’s Miki Zohar asserts Blue and White is ‘obstructing PM in extracting Israel from the coronavirus crisis,’ says inter-party dysfunction, not budget, at heart of crisis-By TOI staff-AUG 21,20-Today, 2:21 pm

Israel appears to be barreling toward a new election, coalition chairman Miki Zohar (Likud) said Friday morning, blaming the Blue and White party for the impasse and claiming they were hindering the prime minister’s efforts to combat the coronavirus crisis. He also indicated that it was the government’s general dysfunction, rather than the disagreement over the state budget, that was threatening to bring down the government merely three months after its formation.“We don’t want elections,” Zohar told 103FM Radio, “But we also don’t want to carry on in the way things are with [Blue and White], where we feel they are simply obstructing the prime minister in extracting Israel from the coronavirus crisis. We in Likud are not saying we are prepared to compromise with Blue and White, because we simply feel we don’t have a true partner that wants to maintain a coalition with us.”There are only three days to go until the deadline to pass a national budget or a bill to delay its passage. With the passage of the budget seen as impossible with the time left to do so, the only realistic option is giving final approval to a bill to delay the budget deadline by 100 days. Such a bill has been approved in its first of three plenum readings, but Likud is making various demands in order to support its final passage. If the coalition fails to do so by Monday night, the government will automatically fall and new elections will be called“If nothing dramatic changes in the next 48 hours… it looks like elections,” Zohar said.Under the laws passed to form the coalition, failure to pass a 2021 budget by next March would force new elections.Blue and White has accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of deliberately attempting to violate the coalition agreement with his sudden demand for a one-year budget in order leave himself a future window to dissolve the government and avoid having to hand over the prime minister post to Defense Minister Benny Gantz next year, as the coalition deal also stipulates.Netanyahu has been reported to be demanding various changes to his party’s coalition agreement with Blue and White to protect his status as his criminal trial moves forward, as well as to assert more power over the justice and law enforcement systems. He is reportedly demanding greater power over senior appointments, including of top law enforcement officials, in contravention of previous agreements.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (R) and Defense Minister Benny Gantz attend the weekly cabinet meeting at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem on June 21, 2020. (Marc Israel Sellem/Pool/Flash90)-Zohar denied Netanyahu had any interest in hampering legal proceedings against him, maintaining that the prime minister was insisting on a one-year budget — instead of the two-year program that had been agreed upon — as he had determined that this was the best way forward for Israel’s economy.Top economists have backed Gantz’s call for a two-year budget, saying there would now be little point for a 2020 budget just a few months before the year’s end.“No one wants to cancel any trial,” Zohar said. “This government isn’t functioning.” He asserted that the power-sharing coalition the sides had agreed upon “is preventing us from advancing what our public believes in, and we represent a huge public… If they don’t change their attitude and understand Likud’s needs it’s very possible that on Monday at midnight will find ourselves in another election campaign.”Meanwhile, Yamina MK Ayelet Shaked told the radio station she believed the sides would eventually agree on a budget delay, warning that Netanyahu should not count on her party’s support since he spurned it to form a government with Blue and White months ago, relegating it to the opposition.“The political reality changed once Netanyahu decided to break up the right-wing bloc,” she said. “We are an independent party that presents an alternative, value-based leadership.”Yamina MK Ayelet Shaked speaks during a press conference in Jerusalem on May 14, 2020. (Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)-Gantz’s partner in Blue and White’s leadership, Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, tweeted Friday morning the party remained committed “to doing the right thing for Israel and its people… no games, no tricks, no shticks, no backing down.”Tweeting a photo of a faction outing Friday morning, Gantz used similar language. “We’re not about games and tricks, but about respect and values,” he wrote.President Reuven Rivlin has spoken in recent days with coalition party leaders with the goal of preventing another election, the President’s Residence said Thursday.Rivlin met Netanyahu and United Torah Judaism (UTJ) party leader Yaakov Litzman, and spoke on the phone with Gantz, Shas leader Aryeh Deri and UTJ No. 2 Moshe Gafni, according to the statement. He told the politicians that “it is unthinkable that the issue of approving the state budget will lead us to a fourth election.“The public’s trust in its elected officials will hit an extreme low in the case of another election,” the president added. “After three election cycles in less than a year, we, the citizens, feel deceived and fearful.”Apparently alluding to widespread suspicions that Netanyahu is interested in elections to avoid having to hand over the premiership to Gantz in November 2021, he added: “If we are doomed to go to another election, we must make sure that we go to it with full transparency, with the public understanding the exact reason. We mustn’t allow the budget to be the reason.”Army Radio reported Thursday morning that Blue and White was formulating an offer that would see senior law enforcement appointments frozen for an additional period until a mechanism for those nominations is finalized.More importantly, the plan would include the immediate appointment of a new interim state attorney instead of Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, who currently holds the temporary role.Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit speaks at the 17th annual Jerusalem Conference of the ‘Besheva’ group, on February 24, 2020. (Olivier Fitoussi/ Flash90)-Netanyahu, livid at Mandelblit for announcing corruption charges against him in three criminal cases, tried unsuccessfully to prevent him from becoming interim state attorney when Shai Nitzan’s tenure ended in December. Replacing Mandelblit as interim state attorney is one of the premier’s goals.According to the reported Blue and White proposal, Mandelblit’s replacement will be announced soon, with the agreement of both parties, and will serve until a full-time state attorney is picked.Likud and Blue and White members continued to badmouth each other in interviews Thursday.Justice Minister Avi Nissenkorn attacked Likud for its “obsessive” concern with the identity of the state attorney and “politicization” of law enforcement appointments.“Prime Minister Netanyahu is beating his head against a wall,” he told Army Radio.“The issue isn’t a single-year budget anymore,” Blue and White’s Science Minister Izhar Shay told Army Radio. “If someone wants to drag us to elections, they will find any way to do that.”Likud’s Public Security Minister Amir Ohana told the station: “I don’t expect this government to function more than reasonably well, but we don’t currently have that. There is no mutual trust.”Gantz said Wednesday that his party was making every effort to solve the crisis, but said it would not compromise on its core tenets to do so.An unnamed senior official in Likud lashed out on Wednesday at Blue and White over the ongoing coalition crisis, suggesting lawmakers were unlikely to stave off the collapse of the government.“This business isn’t working. From the start I didn’t have high expectations, but I didn’t think it would be like this. It’s impossible to work,” the unnamed official said of the coalition, according to Hebrew-language media reports. “Will we go to elections on Monday? This government is not functioning. Continuing in the current situation is even worse than elections.”Michael Bachner contributed to this report.

Analysis-Hamas issues fresh demands, Israel likely to accept; but will they fight anyway?-A dozen rockets were fired toward Gaza-adjacent Israeli communities over the course of one day, threatening to again spark open war between terror groups in the Strip and the IDF-By Judah Ari Gross-AUG 21,20-    Today, 1:09 pm

The past six months were some of the quietest for Israel on the Gaza front in years. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the border saw few rocket launches, no airborne arson attacks and a halt to the violent protests along the fence. From February to July, 10 rockets were fired at Israel from the Strip — zero in the month of April. This came after a two-day intense exchange of fire in February between the Israel Defense Forces and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.Thursday night saw 12 rockets fired at southern Israel over a few hours. In light of the recent uptick in violence, the Israeli military has been gearing up for a major outbreak of violence in the Strip — likely not a full war, but another multi-day battle in the vein of the 11 such rounds that the IDF has fought since May 2018.Following the previous night’s barrages and reprisals, on Friday morning, the IDF reinforced its Iron Dome missile defense batteries in the Gaza area. Residents of the area were also instructed to keep away from the border, including farmers whose fields are adjacent to the fence and ordinarily have unhindered access to them. From the impact in Sderot, serious damaged caused. pic.twitter.com/LyyzfSOa98  — Emanuel (Mannie) Fabian (@manniefabian) August 21, 2020-In part, the recent lull in violence was driven by the pandemic. Concerned over an outbreak in the densely populated, beleaguered enclave, Hamas reached out to Israel for assistance — something it has rarely done before — and maintained calm in exchange. That relative quiet began unraveling two weeks ago. Hamas has demanded a new ceasefire agreement, which would guarantee it additional aid from Qatar, along with other funding for infrastructure projects in the Strip. The terror group’s precise list of demands has not been released. In order to pressure Israel to acquiesce, the terror group has been ratcheting up the violence along the border, according to its own officials. On August 6, terrorists in the Strip again began regularly launching balloon-borne incendiary and explosive devices into southern Israel, sparking dozens of fires that burned many acres of Israeli land and caused a small amount of property damage. On August 9, snipers also fired shots at construction workers building the border barrier and then at Israeli troops who came to the area.A fire in southern Israel near the border with the Gaza Strip caused from airborne incendiaries flown by Palestinians, August 13, 2020. (Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)-And over the past week, near-daily rocket attacks have again become a fixture for residents of Gaza-adjacent communities. In response to the arson attacks and the rockets, the IDF has conducted nightly reprisal raids on Hamas sites in the Strip since August 12, bombing both above- and below-ground facilities, while refraining from hitting operatives. Israel has also forbidden Palestinians from fishing off the Gaza coast and has halted the transfer of fuel into the enclave, forcing authorities to shut down its only power plant, plunging the already electricity-scarce Strip further into darkness (though it continues to receive some power from Israel). This tit for tat shows no signs of disappearing. Though Qatar has reportedly agreed to extend its financial aid to Gaza through at least the end of the year, an Egyptian military delegation that visited Gaza this week apparently did not receive guarantees from Hamas that this would suffice and that the violence would halt.Indeed on Friday morning, several new fires were reported outside Israeli communities north of the Gaza Strip, apparently caused by more balloon-borne incendiary devices.Ceasefire eventually-Over the past two plus years, Israel has generally agreed to Hamas ceasefire demands, allowing Qatar to send in hundreds of millions of dollars to the cash-strapped Strip, along with additional concrete, even though it knows that at least a portion of both goes towards the terror group’s military ambitions.Critics of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — including, once upon a time, his former opponent, now scorned ally Defense Minister Benny Gantz — railed against this policy, comparing it to paying protection money to the mafia. Supporters of this strategy see it as a way to settle the Gaza issue easily, quickly and with minimal bloodshed in order to allow the military to focus on the more pressing matters of preventing Iranian entrenchment in Syria and blocking Hezbollah’s arms build-up in Lebanon.Palestinians receive financial aid from Qatar at a post office in Gaza City, November 27, 2019. (Hassan Jedi/Flash90)-This policy is not likely to change soon. The chances of a long-term political settlement remains exceedingly low, so long as Hamas — a terror group expressly dedicated to the destruction of the State of Israel — remains in power in Gaza, as do the odds of a large-scale military operation in the Strip to once and for all topple Hamas, especially as Israel continues to struggle with the coronavirus pandemic, as well as lingering threats up north.Though recently Gantz has hinted at the possibility of offering Hamas better “carrots” if calm is restored, in the form of allowing Palestinian workers into Israel from Gaza, this appeared to be more a matter of rhetoric than a concrete policy proposal. The Shin Bet security service has long opposed letting Gazans work in Israel on a large scale on the grounds that such a system would be used by Hamas and other terror groups to prepare for and carry out attacks and to move messages and equipment between the Strip and the West Bank, and the Shin Bet’s stance on this matter has not changed. If the past two years can be taken as evidence, this time too Israel is likely to eventually accept Hamas’s demands — at least in part — and Hamas is likely to halt the violence along the border.Unfortunately for residents of southern Israel and of the Gaza Strip, these ceasefire agreements generally only come following flareups, after hundreds of rockets and mortar shells have been fired at Israeli communities and the IDF has retaliated with dozens of reprisal raids — after deaths and injuries and destruction on both sides. And unfortunately, none of the ceasefires seem to last.

Iran says US has no right to demand restoration of sanctions-FM says UN Security Council should stop Washington’s unilateral ‘misuses’ of council resolutions and ‘force’ American accountability for damage it has caused to Iran-By AP-AUG 21,20-Today, 12:30 pm

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s foreign minister in a letter to the UN Security Council said the US has no right to demand the restoration of UN sanctions against Iran, the Foreign Ministry’s website said Friday.Mohammad Javad Zarif said the US lost the right to make demands in 2018 when it withdrew from the nuclear deal between Iran and major world powers. He also said America’s unilateral pullout violated a UN resolution that required signatories to avoid any damage to the deal.US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday officially informed the UN it is demanding the restoration of all UN sanctions on Iran, but allies and opponents declared the US action illegal and doomed to failure.Pompeo insisted the United States has the legal right to “snap back” UN sanctions even though President Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six major powers that was endorsed by the Security Council. He said UN sanctions will continue the arms embargo on Iran, set to expire on October 18, as well as prohibit ballistic missile testing and nuclear enrichment that could lead to a nuclear weapons program — which Tehran insists it is not pursuing. The US insistence on snapping back international sanctions against Iran sets the stage for a contentious dispute. The US demand could be ignored by other UN members — calling into question the Security Council’s ability to enforce its own legally binding decisions.US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks during a press conference at the State Department in Washington on June 24, 2020. (Mandel Ngan/Pool/AFP)-Zarif said the term “snapback” was never mentioned in the deal or in the UN resolution that supported the deal. “The US intentionally has applied the word to suggest speed and [an] automatic” return of sanctions, he said. The Trump administration wants to reimpose all international sanctions that had been eased under the nuclear deal. Other nations claim the US has no standing to make the demand because the Trump administration pulled the US out of the deal.Under the agreement, Tehran received sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program. The “snapback” mechanism was created in the event Tehran was proven to be in violation of the accord.Zarif said the Security Council should stop the US’s unilateral “misuses” of council resolutions, saying “the people of Iran expect the council to force the US to be accountable” for its “damages” to Iran. The US imposed unilateral sanctions on Iran and sent the country’s economy into free fall following its pullout from the deal.

14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

Rivlin: We will respond to Hamas with 'force, determination'-After night of rockets and Gaza strikes, Hamas says Israel will ‘pay price’-IDF boosts Iron Dome batteries in south; agricultural workers ordered to cease work near border with enclave; 2 fires sparked by balloon-borne incendiary devices-By TOI staff-AUG 21,20-Today, 12:36 pm

The Hamas terror group warned on Friday that Israel will “pay the price” for its actions against the Gaza Strip, after a night that saw 12 rockets fired toward Israel and three rounds of reprisal airstrikes by Israeli warplanes.“Israel must bear the consequences and pay the price for the continued aggression against Gaza, the tightening of the siege, the disruption of the lives of residents and the bombing of resistance facilities,” a Hamas statement read. “The resistance clarifies that it will not hesitate to wage a campaign against Israel if the escalation and bombings continue.”Friday morning saw a renewal of fires in the south caused by incendiary balloons launched from Gaza toward Israel. Two blazes in the area under the jurisdiction of the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council were brought under control by firefighters. The Israel Defense Forces said it carried out three sets of strikes overnight and in the early hours of the morning in response to rocket-fire, targeting underground infrastructure belonging to Hamas, a cement facility used to provide materials for tunnels dug by Gazan terror groups and a site where rockets are produced. The IDF later released footage of the strikes, saying it showed aircraft bombing Hamas “military facilities, weapons production sites and underground infrastructure.”The Shehab news outlet, which is linked to Hamas, reported that at least one person was injured during the strikes east of Khan Younis, in southern Gaza. The Gaza health ministry did not report any injuries.Smoke rises in the distance after warplanes belonging to the Israeli army carried out airstrikes over Khan Yunis, in the Southern Gaza Strip early morning on August 21, 2020. (SAID KHATIB / AFP)-Twelve rockets were fired at southern Israel from the Strip on Thursday evening and in the early hours of Friday morning, the IDF said. Nine of them were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system, the military said.“We hold Hamas responsible for all terror activity emanating from Gaza,” the military added. The rockets marked a major escalation, even as tensions have ramped up over the past several weeks with sporadic rocket fire and hundreds of balloons carrying incendiary devices being launched toward Israel, drawing near-daily Israeli reprisal fire.A home in the southern Israeli town of Sderot sustained considerable damage in one of the attacks.Pictures of the home showed a kitchen blown apart, windows smashed and large holes in walls and the roof. Reports indicated that the damage was likely caused by shrapnel from an interception. An Israeli man inspects the damage to a home after it was hit by a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip, in Sderot, Israel, Aug. 21, 2020 (AP Photo/Tsafrir Abayov)-President Reuven Rivlin issued a statement saying Israel would respond to the violence with “force and determination.”“Israelis living in the area around Gaza had another tough night, including serious damage to property. This morning, too, we are with them and have full of appreciation for their resilience,” Rivlin said in a statement.President Reuven Rivlin casts his ballot at a voting station in Jerusalem during the Knesset elections on March 2, 2020. (Olivier Fitoussi/Flash90)“We will not stand by while Hamas is out of control. The IDF will respond with force and determination, sortie after sortie, and will continue even if it requires patience and time,” Rivlin said. The IDF boosted the number of Iron Dome batteries in the south of the country in response to the uptick in violence. It also ordered the cessation of agricultural work near the border fence with the enclave until further notice.Israeli soldiers extinguish a fire near Kibbutz Kissufim caused by an incendiary balloon launched from the Gaza Strip on August 19, 2020. (Menahem Kahana/AFP)-Over the past few weeks, terrorists in the enclave have again begun launching balloon-borne incendiary and explosive devices into southern Israel, sparking dozens of fires that caused environmental and property damage in the region. Those attacks have drawn daily retaliatory Israeli strikes against Hamas installations. The apparent uptick in fighting late Thursday and early Friday comes amid truce efforts being brokered by Egypt.A ceasefire in place for years, which has already been renewed several times, is bolstered by millions of dollars in financial aid from Qatar to Gaza. But complaints from Hamas that Israel has failed to live up to its side of the bargain have been accompanied by sporadic flare-ups on the border.AFP contributed to this report.

'We closed the gate on annexation'UAE envoy: With Israel deal done, we’ll directly advocate for Palestinian state-In new op-ed for Israeli paper, ambassador to US says agreement will provide Abu Dhabi with ‘stronger’ tools to ‘forcefully’ promote rights of the Palestinian people-By TOI staff-AUG 21,20-Today, 11:59 am

In his second op-ed for an Israeli newspaper, the United Arab Emirates’s ambassador  to the US said the new normalization agreement with Israel would allow for “direct” advocacy for the Palestinian cause, including the establishment of a sovereign state, now with “stronger” tools.“As we have for fifty years, we will forcefully advocate for these ends,” Yousef Al-Otaiba wrote in the piece for Yedioth Ahronoth. “Now, we will do it directly, face to face and empowered with stronger incentives, policy options and diplomatic tools.“The UAE will remain an ardent and consistent supporter of the Palestinian people — for their dignity, their rights and their own sovereign state. They must share in the benefits of normalization,” he wrote.“We also closed the gate on annexation and created new dynamics in the peace process,” Al-Otaiba said.UAE ambassador in Washington Yousef al-Otaiba, September 18, 2014. (UAE embassy website)-In his first op-ed in June, months before the normalization deal was clinched, Al-Otaiba warned Jerusalem against its plan to unilaterally annex parts of the West Bank, saying such a move would destroy any hopes for further rapprochement between the Jewish state and the Arab world.Al-Otaiba was one of the three Arab ambassadors to attend the White House ceremony during which US President Donald Trump unveiled his peace plan for the Middle East.Israel and the UAE announced an agreement last week to establish full normalized relations. The agreement makes the UAE the third Arab country, after Egypt and Jordan, to have full, active diplomatic ties with Israel.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied reports the deal included a green light for the US to sell Abu Dhabi its most advanced fighter jets and UAVs.As part of the deal, which solidifies an existing secret relationship forged over joint opposition to Iran, Israel has agreed to suspend its plans to annex some 30 percent of the West Bank. Netanyahu has insisted he still plans to move forward with those plans later on, though settler leaders doubt this assertion.A view of the Israeli settlement of Ariel in the West Bank, on July 1, 2020. (Jack Guez/AFP)-Meanwhile, according to the Ir Amim nonprofit, major infrastructure projects in the E-1 corridor close to Jerusalem are still being advanced, which could hinder the creation of a Palestinian state.Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the normalization agreement at a joint meeting of the Palestinian leadership on Tuesday night, and urged other countries to stick to a 2002 Saudi-led proposal that conditions ties with Israel on the creation of a Palestinian state. While UAE officials have consistently described their agreement as a step toward helping Palestinian statehood by halting annexation plans, Abbas criticized those for whom “the Palestinian question begins and ends with annexation.”

Luftwaffe, Israeli Air Force conduct first joint exercise in Germany-Israeli pilot says two sides feel ‘how deep the past is,’ but look to future; German military spokesperson calls arrival of Jewish state’s jets ‘very emotional for us’By Agencies-20 August 2020, 10:12 pm

Germany welcomed military aircraft from Israel to its airspace on Thursday in their first joint combat exercises in German territory, as both air forces praised the intensive cooperation between the two countries.“It was very emotional for us when, one after the other, the first Israeli jets arrived here in German airspace,” a spokesman for the German Luftwaffe told the German news agency dpa.“Nowadays, we have a very intense partnership with the Israelis,” spokesman Thorsten Weber said. “We work closely together, we do exercises together, German soldiers are being trained in Israel.”Israeli Air Force pilot Lt. Colonel O., who didn’t give his full name in line with the military branch’s regulations, said that during the exercises he remembered the difficult past of Germans and Jews while also looking to the future.During the Third Reich, Nazi Germany murdered 6 million European Jews and others in the Holocaust. Relations between Israel and Germany were difficult in the first decades after the end of the war, but have been growing closer together over the years.“I think all of us are feeling it right in the heart, how deep the past is,” O. told The Associated Press. “But we’re looking into the future and are happy for the opportunity of flying together.”He added that the cooperation of the two air forces was a good thing for both countries.Nowadays, Germany is one of Israel’s staunchest supporters.Still, most interactions between the two nations carry a deeper symbolic significance because of the horrors of the Holocaust, which ended 75 years ago when Germany surrendered in World War II.A German Eurofighter, right, parks beside an F-16 jet from Israel, left, at an airbase in Noervenich, Germany, August 20, 2020. (AP Photo/Martin Meissner)-The Israeli pilots arrived at the base in western Germany on Monday for two weeks of exercises. They are conducting training with the German air force for the first week, and also with planes from the Hungarian air force in the second week.Their planes include a group of six F-16s, two Gulfstreams and two Boeing 707 tanker jets. A total of around 180 Israeli personnel are involved. On Tuesday, Israeli and German jets flew over the former Nazi concentration camp Dachau in a tribute to the more than 40,000 Jews killed there in the Holocaust. They also flew over the nearby Fuerstenfeldbruck airfield near Munich to pay tribute to the 11 Israeli athletes killed in the Munich massacre attack during the 1972 Summer Olympics. Two athletes were killed and another nine taken hostage by the Palestinian terror group Black September from the Olympic Village on September 5, 1972. During a botched rescue attempt at the airfield by German police, the other athletes, along with five of their captors and a West German police officer, were killed. It is the first time ever that the Israeli Air Force has participated in such exercises in Germany.Luftwaffe chief Ingo Gerhartz earlier this week called the joint exercise “a sign of our friendship today.”German air force Bundeswehr Eurofighters and an Israeli Air Force F-16 jet fly in formation near Munich in commemoration of the 1972 Munich Olympic Games massacre in which 11 Israeli athletes were killed, on August 18, 2020. (Sven Hoppe/dpa via AP)-He said it was also a reminder that Germany has an enduring responsibility “to fight anti-Semitism with the utmost consistency” because of its Nazi past. The IAF said the mission, which runs until August 28, will give its pilots a chance to train in unfamiliar surroundings and will include simulated dogfights, air-to-ground battles and missile threats.Israeli pilots will also take part in aerial maneuvers with Germany and other NATO members during the deployment.Germany and Israel have stepped up their military cooperation in recent years, with the Luftwaffe taking part in joint exercises in the Israeli Negev desert in 2019.The homage comes as Germany grapples with an upsurge in anti-Semitic and far-right violence, 75 years after the defeat of the Nazi regime. In the eastern city of Halle last year, a neo-Nazi shot dead two people after trying but failing to storm a synagogue. The attack prompted Chancellor Angela Merkel to say Germany needed “to do more” to protect Jewish people. In June, German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer ordered the partial dissolution of Germany’s elite KSK commando force after revelations that some of its members harbored neo-Nazi sympathies.

Torahs packed, synagogues on alert as wildfires bear down on Northern California-With huge blazes threatening thousands of residents and evoking ‘Biblical’ connotations, some shuls are preparing to evacuate, while pandemic prevents others from providing shelter-By Maya Mirsky and Gabriel Greschler-AUG 21,20-Today, 8:24 am

SAN FRANCISCO (J. the Jewish News of Northern California via JTA) — When the evacuation orders came Wednesday night, Guerneville resident Sonia Tubridy and her daughter packed the car and left, joining a caravan of vehicles fleeing the North Bay area and the fires that threatened to engulf them.Tubridy, cultural director of the Russian River Jewish Community, was among the thousands of people ordered to evacuate from fires burning 46,000 acres across a vast area covering five counties and stretching from Vacaville north to Lake Berryessa and out to the Sonoma County coast. Dubbed the “LNU Lightning Complex” by Cal Fire, the danger zone has required mandatory evacuations in Napa, Sonoma and Solano counties and continues to expand.Tubridy described the evacuation process as hectic. We were in a stream of traffic leaving River Road,” she said from near Bodega Bay, where she and her daughter were temporarily taking refuge for the day. “Thousands of cars going five miles per hour.”With hot and windy weather forecast, more evacuations are expected, especially for areas south of the fires, according to a Cal Fire press conference this morning.“If you think you’re in danger, please be ready to go,” Sonoma County Sheriff Mark Essick said.Rabbi Chaim Zaklos of Chabad of Solano County is one of those who was prepared and waiting for the call this morning. As the fires bore down on Vacaville overnight, Zaklos got ready.File: Chabad of Solano County, California (Facebook photo)-“The Torah has been packed up and ready to go,” he said. “All the other holy artifacts have been packed up.”Zaklos added that it was “literally raining ashes.”“You can see the red in the sky,” he said.In addition to the LNC Fire, other large fires are burning near Santa Cruz, and hundreds of smaller blazes are being fought in San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties.“This all makes this time of year quite Biblical in feel,” said Rabbi Niles Goldstein of Congregation Beth Shalom in Napa.He said that some of his congregants who live outside the city limits have had to evacuate, although the synagogue isn’t threatened at the moment.“There is some smoke and ash, but the city of Napa is safe so far,” he said.E. Michèle Samson, president of Congregation Shir Shalom in Sonoma, also felt a Biblical pull.“Oh my god, can you believe this?” she said. “It’s like the next thing is going to be boils or locusts.” She added that the synagogue wasn’t in the path of the fire for now.“Today, I think we’re OK,” she said.Rabbi Stephanie Kramer of Congregation Shomrei Torah in Santa Rosa also said her synagogue was not currently at risk from the fires, but that the homes of some of her congregants are threatened. The fires have been bringing back traumatic memories for many. Last year, the Kincade wildfire torched over 66,000 acres in mostly rural Sonoma County, destroying roughly 100 buildings and forcing 185,000 people to evacuate. The destructive Tubbs Fire hit Sonoma, Napa and Lake counties in 2017.File: Congregation Shomrei Torah in Santa Rosa, California (Facebook photo)-“It’s making everyone quite anxious and brings up memories,” Kramer said.Shomrei Torah was a major point of relief during the 2017 fire, when the synagogue opened its doors and became a hub and command center, offering shelter, food and counseling during the crisis and for months after. But Kramer said this time, any efforts to help will be hampered by coronavirus concerns, as people can no longer be packed into small spaces.“It will not look the same in a pandemic,” she said.At Congregation Beth Ami in Santa Rosa, which was similarly affected by the state’s 2017 wildfire season, president Carolyn Metz recalled how four families lost their homes, and said the current crisis is bringing up feelings of post-traumatic stress disorder.Beth Ami had planned to open its preschool on Aug. 17 but postponed until Aug. 24 because of the heat advisory now affecting the region. Metz described the “delicate balance” of dealing with the fires and the pandemic as “daunting.”Tubridy, who will be staying in a Santa Rosa hotel tonight with her adult daughter, described the situation as “layer upon layer of challenges.” Not only are they escaping the fires, she said, but also trying to stay safe from COVID-19. “The pandemic is not gone.”

California fires claim 5 lives, threaten thousands of homes[Associated Press]-JANIE HAR and MARTHA MENDOZA-August 21, 2020

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) — Wildfires that blackened skies, took at least five lives and forced tens of thousands of people from their homes have blazed through California — straining firefighting resources by the sheer vastness of the battle lines.Three major collections of fires — dozens in all — carved their way Thursday through forests, canyons and rural areas in the San Francisco Bay Area and central California.Tens of thousands of homes were threatened by flames that drove through dense and bone-dry trees and brush. Many of the fires were sparked by lightning strikes from brief thunderstorms this week as a high-pressure area over the West brought a dangerous mix of triple-digit weather and monsoonal moisture pulled from the south. Some fires doubled in size within 24 hours, fire officials said. And while some evacuations were lifted in the small city of Vacaville, between San Francisco and Sacramento, other areas expanded their evacuation areas. The University of California, Santa Cruz was evacuated and a new fire burning near Yosemite National Park also prompted evacuations.Santa Cruz itself, a coastal city of 65,000, wasn't affected but Mayor Justin Cummings urged residents Thursday evening to be prepared to evacuate by gassing up their vehicles and packing important documents, medicines and other belongings.“Prepare early so that you are ready to go at a moment's notice," Cummings said.Although temperatures were predicted to ease slightly on Friday, they were also expected to be hot enough so that firefighters will not be able to count on cool evening weather aiding them. Erratic winds also could drive the fires unpredictably in multiple directions, state fire officials said.“There’s so much heat in these fires that they create their own wind ... and they may blow in any direction, and very erratically," said Daniel Berlant, an assistant deputy director with the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, also known as Cal Fire.Winds gusting to 20 mph (32 kph) over ridge tops could challenge the overnight firefighting efforts in Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties, said the incident commander, Cal Fire Assistant Chief Billy See.“This country likes to burn at night, more so than during the day, and that’s because of the wind patterns,” he said.Nearly 50,000 people were ordered evacuated in those counties. The ferocity of the fires was astonishing so early in the fire season, which historically has seen the largest and deadliest blazes when gusty Santa Ana winds start blowing over the next two months. But the death toll already had reached at least five since the majority of blazes started less than a week ago.Berlant said three civilians died in Napa County and one died in neighboring Solano County since the fires began. He didn't have details but Solano County Sheriff Thomas A. Ferrara reported the death of a male resident there. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the fatalities included a Pacific Gas & Electric utility worker who was found dead Wednesday in a vehicle in the Vacaville area. Also, in central California, a pilot on a water-dropping mission in western Fresno County died Wednesday morning when his helicopter crashed. At least two other people were missing and more than 30 civilians and firefighters have been injured, authorities said.Smoke and ash billowing from the fires also fouled the air throughout California's scenic central coast and in San Francisco. The fires have destroyed at least 175 buildings, including homes, and threatened tens of thousands more.Tim and Anne Roberts had gone to the beach with their two children on Monday to avoid the smoke at their home in Boulder Creek in Santa Cruz County. They packed a change of clothes, their children’s school supplies and their passports — just in case. They learned Wednesday that their house had burned. Birth certificates, legal documents, and family heirlooms are gone.
