HOSEA 4:1-3
1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye chil dren of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

DEUTORONOMY 28:22-24

23  And thy heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron.
24  The LORD shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed.

AS OF AUGUST 22,20-THERE ARE 975,626 DEATHS OF THE 22,792,475 COVID-19 CASES WORLDWIDE.

Testing numbers almost double over last week-Israel passes 100,000 coronavirus cases, death toll crosses 800-1,515 more infections confirmed in last 24 hours; Bat Yam mayor closes city beaches to non-residents after hundreds of ultra-Orthoodox Jews from ‘red’ areas flock to seaside-By TOI staff-AUG 21,20-Today, 7:23 pm

Israel passed the landmark tally of 100,000 coronavirus cases on Friday, less than four months after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the country had “achieved major success” against the pandemic. The Health Ministry confirmed 1,515 new coronavirus cases since Thursday evening, bringing the total count since the start of the pandemic to 100,716.There were 22,122 confirmed active cases, of which 390 were in serious condition, including 116 on ventilators. Another 146 were in moderate condition and the rest had mild or no symptoms. The death toll grew by another 14 since Thursday night, reaching a total of 809.The ministry said that of 28,876 coronavirus test results returned on Thursday, 5.4% were positive, continuing a slight decline that started several days earlier. The number of daily tests carried out since Monday was nearly double the figures that were reported last week.Soldiers of the Home Front Command seen at a nursing home in the city of Bnei Brak, April 14, 2020 (Flash90)-Israel has seen a persistent amount of new cases over the past several weeks, with experts blaming a too-speedy reopening and the lack of an effective contact tracing program as main factors in the virus’s surge.A day after the so-called coronavirus cabinet failed to vote on a proposal for local lockdowns and regulations to contain the pandemic, the mayor of the coastal city of Bat Yam on Friday announced that the city’s beaches would be closed to non-residents.It was unclear if the municipality had the authority to make such a ruling. The municipality said in a statement that the decision was made due to “the high density [of people] in recent weeks on the city’s beaches and in particular on the separate beach.”The separate beach has different times for men and women and mainly serves the ultra-Orthodox public — the municipality said that many of those using that beach came from so-called “red” areas of the country with high levels of infection.“We are working around the clock to keep Bat Yam a ‘green’ city, in cooperation with all relevant parties and the city’s residents. At the beach it is impossible to maintain a distance, and we do not demand people wear masks,” said Mayor Zvika Brut, according to the Ynet news site. “We will not allow a risk to our residents due to overcrowding caused by the arrival of guests.”According to the report, police and municipal inspectors were to be stationed at the entrance to the separate beach, with the particular aim of stopping the entry of chartered buses.FILE — A municipal inspector patrols at a beach in the central coastal city of Bat Yam on June 26, 2020, after the municipality ordered the closure of beaches during the day as part of restrictions against the coronavirus. (Flash90)A vote on coronavirus czar Prof. Ronni Gamzu’s proposal for containing the COVID-19 pandemic was pushed off on Thursday, following a tense meeting of the so-called coronavirus cabinet.Channel 12 reported that the proposed regulations include, in “red” areas with high infection rates, a limit on going more than 500 meters away from one’s home; limiting gatherings to immediate family members; shutting down the education system, except for special education; and closing most of the public transportation system. In other areas, the steps would include closing malls, markets, indoor dining in restaurants, events, shows and tourism. The education system would only be open to Grade 3 and under, and special education programs. Private businesses’ employee office attendance would be limited to 30 percent capacity, the report said. The goal of the plan is to lower the infection rate to 400 new daily confirmed cases within four weeks. If the rate of infection is not slowed by September 10, new restrictions will take effect starting from Rosh Hashanah, on September 18, until October 11, after the Sukkot holidayUltra-Orthodox ministers Aryeh Deri and Yaakov Litzman led the opposition to the plan, claiming it would prevent prayers at synagogues, according to leaks picked up by Hebrew media. The meeting marked the third time the coronavirus cabinet discussed Gamzu’s “Traffic Light” outline and failed to approve it. The next discussion of the proposal will be held on Monday. After the meeting, Gamzu said, “Cabinet ministers expressed support for the outline and for avoiding a lockdown.”Ronni Gamzu attends a Finance Committee meeting in the Knesset, April 23, 2014. (Flash90)-Infection rates remain high, amid fears that communal prayers and family gatherings over the holidays of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot could cause a renewed spike.Netanyahu and National Security Council head Meir Ben-Shabbat were both pushing for a full nationwide lockdown in the coming weeks, while Gamzu has reservations, the Walla news website reported on Thursday, citing cabinet ministers and senior officials. In the first wave of infection in March and April, Netanyahu imposed a lengthy nationwide lockdown with the support of then-Health Ministry director-general Moshe Bar Siman-Tov.The measure succeeded in driving down cases, but was accompanied by historic economic damage. The government’s failure to establish an effective testing and contact tracing system meant that infections spiraled quickly out of control once the lockdown was lifted. Since then, many ministers have taken a strong stand against lockdowns.Gamzu has been a vocal opponent of sweeping lockdowns, favoring localized restrictions on outbreak hotspots. But that policy has not been approved by the coronavirus cabinet thus far.“It’s a good plan, but it isn’t clear whether it’s implementable,” Walla quoted an unnamed senior minister as saying. “Israel is a small country and I’m not sure we can really make a distinction between different areas.”

Women’s more complicated genes help them survive COVID more than men, claims MD-In new book ‘The Better Half’ Dr. Sharon Moalem says genes, not behavior, responsible for women’s increased longevity and immune response, but also heighten effects of ‘Long Covid’-By Cathryn J. Prince-AUG 21,20-Today, 11:28 pm

NEW YORK — Whether it’s the ability to see more colors or possessing more endurance, women may be — biologically speaking — far better off than their male counterparts. Dr. Sharon Moalem makes his case for this genetic advantage in his new book “The Better Half: On the Genetic Superiority of Women.”“Whenever life is challenging, whether it’s pandemics or famines, you’re going to see women coming out from the pack and always doing better. Women are always going to come out on top when it comes to survival,” said Moalem in Zoom call with The Times of Israel.Over the course of his research Moalem learned that women are more resilient and have more intellect and stamina because they possess a more complicated biology — not because of behavior. While people inherit one X chromosome from their mother at conception, it is the chromosome received from the father that determines biological sex. Thus, females are XX and males are XY.It is this second X chromosome that puts women at a biological advantage because it means they have twice the number of genes to help regulate their immune response. In short, a woman has more arrows in her immunological quiver when it comes to combating diseases such as COVID-19oalem’s book is especially timely when seen through the lens of COVID.Dr. Sharon Moalem, author of ‘The Better Half: On the Genetic Superiority of Women.’ (Courtesy)-There were 22.4 million COVID-19 infections worldwide and 788,600 deaths as of this writing, according to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. Data from several countries suggests women are dying from COVID-19 at lower rates than men, Moalem said. In New York, men appear to have higher infection rates and are dying at twice the rate of women, according to the New York Health Department. While there still isn’t enough known about how and why symptoms and progression of the virus differ between males and females, Moalem said because women have stronger immune systems they are better biologically suited to deal with the virus’s assault.“By declaring females genetically superior I’m not crowning them from a moral perspective, it’s just saying they have these biological advantages that males don’t,” said the physician, research geneticist and author. The following conversation has been edited.Times of Israel: The book opens with a list: women live longer than men, they have stronger immune systems, they’re less likely to suffer from developmental disabilities, they’re more likely to see the world in a wider variety of colors, they are better at fighting cancer. Did this ruffle some readers’ feathers?Moalem: I found that people who are offended tend to take this personally. I no longer view females’ survival advantage to be behavioral in origin; I know it to be genetic. So if you’re still of the worldview that it’s your fault if you’re not living long and healthy — you didn’t go to the doctor, you didn’t eat right, you took too many risks, you did drugs, you used alcohol, or tobacco — it’s understandable you would find the book offensive. If you’re still of the worldview that it’s your fault if you’re not living long and healthy… it’s understandable you would find the book offensive-In fact it’s exactly the opposite with my message, which is we need to do a lot more to take care of men because they are born at such a disadvantage. That disadvantage is unfortunately what we are seeing with COVID. There is now a 2.4 times higher mortality rate for men when you adjust for age.‘The Better Half: On the Genetic Superiority of Women,’ by Dr. Sharon Moalem. (Courtesy)-Initially, there were articles suggesting those differences were because of behavior, like men smoke more, or drink more.Right, in the beginning people were saying [the COVID-19 death rate] has to be [linked to] behavior because in China 60 percent of men smoke and only three percent of women smoke. And then we saw it’s the same mortality rate regardless of smoking. In fact, you are somewhat protected if you smoke, to the point that in ICUs there are clinical trials using nicotine patches. It’s only when they realized that if 60% of men in China smoke but only 10 or 20% of the men in ICUs were current smokers that it’s obviously not behavioral. Luckily, people followed up on it. So it just shows you if we’re stuck with this behavioral outlook it anchors us in a negative way. It keeps us from developing new therapeutics.According to your research women are better at producing antibodies. Is this something pharmaceutical companies are looking at while developing therapeutics and vaccines against COVID?No. They’re not looking at this. When it comes to clinical trials, women are often not included in large enough numbers to give us an idea of what is happening. Part of the reason is it’s harder to recruit women of reproductive age for clinical trials, where men just show up.Illustrative: In this March 16, 2020 file photo, a pharmacist gives Jennifer Haller, left, the first shot in the first-stage safety study clinical trial of a potential vaccine for COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren, File)-So all our childhood vaccines are one size fits all? How does that impact us?Women will get more side effects from vaccines because they have such an aggressive immune system. The benefit to that is it’s much more likely the vaccine will take in women than in men.The male immune system is like a pacifist compared to a female’s system when it comes to getting an immune response. You really have to get the male’s attention when it comes to getting a response to a vaccine. We’re realizing that men, especially as they get older, will likely need a booster shot for every vaccine that a woman needs just one.The male immune system is like a pacifist compared to a female’s system when it comes to getting an immune response-After reading your book it seems drug dosing should be much more specific than, say, “adults take two capsules every 4-6 hours and children under 12 take one capsule.”I think future generations will look back and say “How did they not think to be more specific?” You go to a shoe store you ask for your shoe size. You get things to fit.We know that at least half of the drugs we prescribe work differently in a man’s body than in a woman’s body, but we still give the same dose.A healthcare worker preparing a vaccine (iStock)-I think a bartender has a better idea of how drugs act between the sexes than your family physician. It’s not the doctor’s fault; pharmaceutical companies don’t give actual sex dependent dosing because the law doesn’t require it. Until the FDA makes that a law, you’re never going to see that happen because to do that would be almost twice the end development cost for every drug. Can you talk a little bit about how women frequently experience more side effects from drugs than men, but that many physicians dismiss their complaints? We’re probably overdosing women. When it comes to breaking poisons down in drugs, the female system is much slower. All the calculations we do for drug absorption time is based on the male body. We just transpose everything we learn about men on to women and hope it works. We’ve been very lucky. I would argue for a separate but completely parallel approval process for men and women.I think a bartender has a better idea of how drugs act between the sexes than your family physician-Do women pay a price for having stronger immune systems when it comes to COVID-19? Yes. The price women will pay for surviving and not having a serious infection is something being called Long COVID. It seems to be a lingering autoimmune reaction after COVID-19. Women are experiencing almost a chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia. They’re not recovering.Illustrative: British forensic psychiatrist Jenny Judge, a long term sufferer with post-coronavirus (Covid-19) symptoms, wears a heart monitor as she poses at her home in Surrey, England, July 8, 2020. (GLYN KIRK/AFP)-How do we use what you’ve uncovered in your research to help both genetic males and females? Both sexes stand to benefit from more research. We can only study one sex to help another if we accept there are underlying differences that we can’t change that have a biological origin. The morbidity that women face because of autoimmune diseases is pretty severe. With lupus it’s a 9:1 ratio, with muscular dystrophy it’s 4:1. All of these conditions make life unbearable at times. We need to understand how it is that men don’t develop those conditions.Behavior aside, if we accept there are basic biological differences, if we see that the male immune system is pacifist by nature, that it doesn’t turn on itself, then we can think about how to apply that pacifism to the female physiology.

UAE said to broker meeting between Mossad chief and top Sudanese official-Yossi Cohen reportedly meets with deputy head of Sudan’s military council, days after country’s foreign ministry spokesman axed for confirming normalization talks with Israel-By TOI staff-AUG 21,20-Today, 11:09 pm

The head of the Mossad spy agency reportedly met with a senior Sudanese official in a meeting organized and hosted by the United Arab Emirates, Arabic media reports said Friday.UAE national security adviser Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan had arranged the sit-down between Yossi Cohen and Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, the deputy head of Sudan’s ruling military council and was present for it as well, the Qatari news outlet Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported.Cohen has been in the UAE to advance last week’s announcement of the US-brokered normalization deal between Jerusalem and Abu Dhabi. Analysts have speculated that the agreement will be followed by similar deals between Israel and other countries in the Arab and Muslim world.Sources with knowledge of the Cohen-Dagalo meeting told the Arabic-language daily that Sudan’s military council is interested in improving ties with Israel.Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, the deputy head of the military council speaks at a ceremony in the capital Khartoum, Sudan, Sunday, Aug. 4, 2019. (AP Photo)-The reported conversation capped a roller-coaster week in Israel-Sudan relations. On Sunday, Intelligence Minister Eli Cohen told the Kan public broadcaster that official ties could be inked between Israel and Sudan by the end of the year.Asked for comment on the matter, Sudan’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Haidar Badawi Sadiq told Sky News Arabia that Khartoum “aspires towards a peace agreement with Israel… a relationship of equals built upon Khartoum’s interests.”The remarks were quickly welcomed by Jerusalem. But hours later Sudan’s acting foreign minister denied knowledge of peace talks with Israel, and said Sadiq had not been authorized to comment on the issue. The spokesman was fired for the comments on Wednesday, but said afterward that he did not regret making them-Sadiq told Israel’s Kan national broadcaster on Thursday that he didn’t understand why his comments had caused such uproar, claiming that Sudan had begun warming relations with Israel before the UAE had.The fired spokesman insisted that the countries were still heading in the direction of normalized relations regardless of the past week’s events, with the proof being that Khartoum has not denied its contacts with Jerusalem.Cohen told Kan on Wednesday that a prospective peace deal with Sudan will include a provision to repatriate thousands of the East African nation’s citizens currently seeking asylum in Israel. In February, Sudan’s transitional leader Lt. Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan met in secret with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Uganda, a meeting quickly disavowed by the country’s prime minister Abdalla Hamdok. At the time, a senior Israeli official told The Times of Israel that Burhan and Netanyahu had agreed to gradually normalize relations between the two nations, which remain technically at war.Sudanese Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the military council, speaks during a military-backed rally, in Omdurman district, west of Khartoum, Sudan, June 29, 2019. (AP Photo/Hussein Malla)-Israel officials have long expressed a wish for improved ties with Khartoum, citing its importance in the region as well as its geographic location. The nation was the birthplace of the Arab League’s 1967 policy refusing negotiations or normalization with Israel, but in recent years has seemingly softened its stance, moving out of Iran’s sphere of influence as it has desperately sought the removal of US sanctions as a supporter of Hamas, Hezbollah and other terror groups.A Sudanese government official told The Associated Press Tuesday that deliberations between Sudanese and Israeli officials have been going on for months, with help from Egypt, the UAE and the US.“It’s a matter of time. We are finalizing everything. The Emirati move encouraged us and helped calm some voices within the government who were afraid of backlash from the Sudanese public,” he said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.Israel has for years sought to repatriate or deport to third-party countries the tens of thousands of African asylum seekers in the country, most of whom live in south Tel Aviv. The government claims many of them are job-seekers and accuses them of bringing crime to the area.Sudanese migrants demonstrate in support of their people in South Tel Aviv, June 30, 2019. (Tomer Neuberg/Flash90)-In response to Cohen’s comments, the Hotline for Refugees and Migrants, a local advocacy group, harshly criticized the possibility of repatriation under a peace deal. The group said any such move would endanger the more than 6,200 Sudanese asylum seekers currently in the country.More than 300,000 people have died in Darfur since 2003, when locals rebelled against the country’s central government, prompting violent reprisals which human rights groups have described as a genocide. While dictator Omar al-Bashir was deposed last year, many senior members of his regime still hold positions in Khartoum.Since al-Bashir’s ouster, hundreds of Darfur residents have been killed and thousands displaced in a series of attacks by Arab Janjaweed militias.Agencies contributed to this report.

Iron Dome intercepts rocket fired from Gaza as Israel, Hamas trade threats-Army chief holds briefing with southern command after a night that saw 12 rockets fired toward Israel and three rounds of reprisal airstrikes by Israeli warplanes-By TOI staff-AUG 21,20-Today, 9:55 pm

Palestinian terrorists in the Gaza Strip fired a rocket at Israel on Friday evening that was intercepted by the Iron Dome defense system, the army said. There were no reports of injuries or damage.Rocket warning sirens wailed in southern Israel, sending thousands of Israelis running for bomb shelters as they sat at their Shabbat evening meals. The Israel Defense Forces said sirens went off in the town of Sderot and in Kibbutz Ivim. The IDF said one launch was identified and intercepted. The launch of the interceptor was caught on camera by Israel’s Kan public broadcaster. And the Iron Dome was caught live in action during a news broadcast https://t.co/zxZarIhaRh pic.twitter.com/zZTG3XwDBd— Legacy (@Immort4l_Legacy) August 21, 2020-On Friday night, police removed a balloon with an incendiary device from the roof of a house in the city of Beersheba. While arson balloons have ignited scores of fires in parts of Israel adjacent to Gaza in recent weeks, Beersheba is located over 20 miles (32 kilometers) from the Strip.Friday’s sirens came as Israel and the Hamas terror group traded threats after a night that saw 12 rockets fired toward Israel and three rounds of reprisal airstrikes by Israeli warplanes.Defense Minister Benny Gantz on Friday warned the terror groups in Gaza that the IDF will deliver a “very harsh blow” if violence continues.“The IDF is ready, it defends and will continue to defend the residents of the south and will attack anyone who attacks us and deliver a very harsh blow,” Gantz said after a meeting with senior IDF officers.IDF chief of staff Aviv Kohavi met with the heads of the Southern Command and “heard a situational assessment and authorized the command’s plans for various scenarios,” the IDF said. Gantz joined the briefing via video conference.Israel’s warning comes after the Hamas terror group issued its own threats.“Israel must bear the consequences and pay the price for the continued aggression against Gaza, the tightening of the siege, the disruption of the lives of residents and the bombing of resistance facilities,” a Hamas statement read. “The resistance clarifies that it will not hesitate to wage a campaign against Israel if the escalation and bombings continue.”Shlomo Malka in his Sderot home damaged after a rocket was launched from the Gaza Strip, August 21, 2020. (Jack Guez/AFP)-Friday morning saw a renewal of fires in the south caused by incendiary balloons launched from Gaza toward Israel. Two blazes in the area under the jurisdiction of the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council were brought under control by firefighters. The IDF said it carried out three sets of strikes overnight and in the early hours of the morning in response to rocket fire, targeting underground infrastructure belonging to Hamas, a cement facility used to provide materials for tunnels dug by Gazan terror groups and a site where rockets are produced. The IDF later released footage of the strikes, saying it showed aircraft bombing Hamas “military facilities, weapons production sites and underground infrastructure.”The Shehab news outlet, which is linked to Hamas, reported that at least one person was injured during the strikes east of Khan Younis, in southern Gaza. The Gaza health ministry did not report any injuries.Smoke rises in the distance after the Israeli Air Force carried out airstrikes over Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip on August 21, 2020. Israeli minister joins UAE Jewish community for pre-Shabbat Zoom ceremony-Israel has ‘been waiting for this historic moment for many years,’ says Omer Yankelevich; Jewish group’s president says he hopes to soon host minister, other Israelis in-person-By TOI staff-AUG 21,20-Today, 8:24 pm

Diaspora Affairs Minister Omer Yankelevich participated in a pre-Shabbat virtual gathering organized by the UAE’s Jewish community on Friday as the countries continue to draw closer at a more public level since the announcement of a normalization deal just over a week ago.“It is so exciting to begin this new chapter for both our countries,” Yankelevich said during the ceremony, according to a joint statement issued by the Jewish Council of the Emirates and the Diaspora Affairs Ministry.“We, in the State of Israel, have been waiting for this historic moment for many years. Now, we have the opportunity to build a strong bridge between us. We are part of one united nation. With a common history, a common heritage and most importantly, a common destiny,” the minister added.Yankelevich was joined by Rabbi Yehuda Sarna, the non-resident chief rabbi of the UAE and JCE President Ross Kriel.A man sporting a Jewish ‘tallit’ looks out over the Dubai skyline in the United Arab Emirates (video screenshot)-Kriel said he looked forward to hosting the Diaspora affairs minister as well as many other Israelis in the UAE.“This is not a day we expected, but it is a day we will never forget,” said Sarna.Sarna claimed it was the first time a member of the Israeli parliament had addressed the Jewish community in the UAE, however, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with leaders of the community on Thursday.“This peace is good for the State Israel, good for our people and good for all peoples of the region,” he told them during a video call. “I hope to visit you this year, soon. If we can overcome the coronavirus pandemic I’ll be able to shake your hands too.”Separately on Friday, the UAE Foreign Ministry Strategic Communications Director Hend al-Otaiba wished followers on Twitter a “Shabbat Shalom” in English, Hebrew and Arabic, calling it an “historic week of peace.”Historic week of peace. Shabbat Shalom.” —  Hend Al Otaiba (@hend_mana) August 21, 2020-In his second op-ed for an Israeli newspaper, the United Arab Emirates’s ambassador to the US said Friday the new normalization agreement with Israel would allow for “direct” advocacy for the Palestinian cause, including the establishment of a sovereign state, now with “stronger” tools.Israel and the United Arab Emirates announced their agreement last week. The two countries “agreed to the full normalization of relations between Israel and the UAE,” they said in a joint statement with the United States that was released by US President Donald Trump. The UAE-Israel deal marks the third such agreement the Jewish state has struck with an Arab country after Egypt (1979) and Jordan (1994).Israeli and UAE delegations have begun meeting to sign bilateral agreements regarding investment, tourism, direct flights, security and the establishment of reciprocal embassies, their statement said. In exchange for the accord, Israel agreed to suspend its planned annexation of parts of the West Bank. The UAE’s small Jewish community has welcomed the agreement, praising the Arab Gulf state for its pluralism and religious tolerance.“Among other things, this will allow Israelis to visit the UAE and share our daily experience of… tolerance and pluralism that typifies the UAE,” the Jewish Council of the Emirates, an umbrella group established by Jews living in the country, said in a statement. In recent years, the UAE has made great efforts to portray itself as a tolerant country welcoming all religions, including Judaism.President Khalifa bin-Zayed al-Nahyan declared 2019 to be the “The Year of Tolerance” in the UAE. In this context, the country announced the building of a massive interfaith compound in Abu Dhabi that will also include a synagogue. The so-called Abrahamic Family House is slated to open in 2022.A Jewish community has been operating in Dubai for a decade, initially with tacit support but more recently with overt backing from the local authorities, and is currently in the process of officially becoming a licensed religious community.Estimates of how many Jews currently live in the UAE range from the low hundreds to 1,500. There are three different congregations — two Orthodox and one egalitarian — and one kosher catering business in the country, called “Elli’s Kosher Kitchen,” which has also garnered a lot of attention, including UAE Culture Minister Noura al-Kaabi hailing it as a new chapter in “Gulf food history.”

After escalation, Gantz warns Gaza terror groups IDF will deliver a ‘harsh blow’-Army chief holds briefing with southern command after a night that saw 12 rockets fired toward Israel and three rounds of reprisal airstrikes by Israeli warplanes-By TOI staff-AUG 21,20-Today, 5:05 pm

Defense Minister Benny Gantz on Friday warned the terror groups in Gaza that the Israel Defense Forces will deliver a “very harsh blow” if violence continues, after a night that saw 12 rockets fired toward Israel and three rounds of reprisal airstrikes by Israeli warplanes.“The IDF is ready, it defends and will continue to defend the residents of the south and will attack any one who attacks us and deliver a very harsh blow,” Gantz said after a meeting with senior IDF officers.IDF chief of staff Aviv Kohavi met with the heads of the Southern Command and “heard a situational assessment and authorized the command’s plans for various scenarios,” the IDF said. German doctors gain access in Siberia to Russian opposition leader in coma-Siberian hospital officials assert opposition leader too unstable to be evacuated, while allies assert authorities are stalling to prevent detection of poisoning-By DARIA LITVINOVA-AUG 21,20-Today, 2:43 pm

MOSCOW (AP) — The family and allies of comatose Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who has been in a coma for a day, were fighting Friday to get him flown to a top German medical facility from a Siberian hospital but local doctors refused to authorize the transfer. After much wrangling, German doctors were being allowed access to him, an associate said.Navalny, a 44-year-old politician and corruption investigator who is one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s fiercest critics, was admitted to an intensive care unit in a coma in the Siberian city of Omsk on Thursday, following what his supporters are calling a suspected poisoning that they believe was engineered by the Kremlin.A plane with German specialists and all the necessary equipment landed at Omsk airport on Friday morning, prepared to take Navalny to a top clinic in Berlin. But doctors at the hospital said his condition was too unstable to transport him.Navalny’s supporters denounced the medical verdict as a ploy by the authorities to “stall and wait” until the suspected poison no longer is traceable in his system. But a chief doctor in Omsk said the physicians who are treating Navalny didn’t “believe the patient suffered from poisoning.”Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he wasn’t aware of any instructions to stop the transfer and that it was purely a medical decision that doctors made based on Navalny’s condition.“It may pose a threat to his health,” Peskov said.Leonid Volkov, a close associated of Navalny, said Friday that German doctors now have access to him.“The German doctors who came on this flight, from Nuremberg, who were refused to get access to this patient finally just got access to him several minutes ago,” Volkov said during a news conference in Berlin.Volkov said even though that was good news, Navalny’s family and allies were still lacking any reliable “independent data” on his condition and were standing by their demand that he needs to be brought to Germany for examination.“We are still very far away from having this situation resolved,” he said.Navalny fell ill on a flight back to Moscow from the Siberian city of Tomsk on Thursday and was taken to the hospital after the plane made an emergency landing in Omsk. His team made arrangements to transfer him to Charité, a clinic in Berlin that has a history of treating famous foreign leaders or dissidents and insisted that the transfer is paramount to saving the politician’s life.“The ban on transferring Navalny is needed to stall and wait until the poison in his body can no longer be traced. Yet every hour of stalling creates a threat to his life,” Yarmysh tweeted.German officials have been in contact with both Russians and a private group that sent a plane to pick Navalny up. “If Mr. Navalny wants to get treated in Berlin and if he is able to come to Berlin, the Charité hospital is obviously ready,” Berlin Mayor Michael Mueller told the German news agency dpa.Navalny’s wife Yulia on Friday submitted a written request to Putin demanding to allow the transfer.r. Yaroslav Ashikhmin, Navalny’s physician in Moscow, told The Associated Press on Friday that there are no conditions, with the exception of severe and multiple trauma, in which patients can not be transported these days.“Being on a plane with high-class specialists (equipped) with a ventilator and an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine, which (effectively) replaces the heart and the lungs can be even safer than staying in a hospital in Omsk,” Ashikhmin said. The most prominent member of Russia’s opposition, Navalny campaigned to challenge Putin in the 2018 presidential election, but was barred from running. His Foundation for Fighting Corruption has been exposing graft among government officials, including some at the highest level. Last month, he had to shut the foundation after a financially devastating lawsuit from Yevgeny Prigozhin, a businessman with close ties to the Kremlin. While his supporters and family members continue to insist that Navalny was poisoned, Omsk hospital deputy chief doctor, Anatoly Kalinichenko, said that no traces of poison were found in the politician’s body and doctors didn’t “believe the patient suffered from poisoning.”Kalinichenko said a diagnosis have been determined and relayed to Navalny’s family. Navalny’s spokesman, Kira Yarmysh, tweeted that the politician’s family merely given “a range of symptoms that can be interpreted differently.”Alexander Murakhovsky, chief physician of the Omsk Ambulance Hospital No. 1, intensive care unit where Alexei Navalny was hospitalized speaks to the media in Omsk, Russia, Friday, Aug. 21, 2020 (AP Photo/Evgeniy Sofiychuk)“Doctors still can’t determine the cause of Alexei’s condition,” she said.Omsk news outlet NGS55 published a video statement of the hospital’s chief doctor, Alexander Murakhovsky, saying that a metabolic disorder was the most likely diagnosis.“It may have been prompted by a sharp plunge in blood sugar on the plane, which caused the loss of consciousness,” Murakhovsky said in the video.Navalny’s supporters angrily rejected the doctor’s hypothesis.“They’re not allowing the transport of Alexei because of a metabolic disorder and a plunge in blood sugar?!” Ivan Zhdanov, head of Navalny’s Foundation for Fighting Corruption, said in a tweet.Another doctor with ties to Navalny, Dr. Anastasia Vasilyeva, who flew to Omsk with the politician’s wife on Thursday, said poisoning with a toxic substance may have caused the alleged metabolic disorder.Ashikhmin, who’s been Navalny’s doctor since 2013, said the politician has always been in good health, regularly went through medical checkups and didn’t have any underlying illnesses that could have triggered his condition.European Union spokeswoman Nabila Massrali said Friday the the 27-nation bloc expects “a swift, independent, transparent investigation” into what caused Navalny’s condition. The EU and urged Russian authorities to “stand by their promises to allow Mr. Navalny to be safely and speedily transferred abroad in order to receive medical treatment in line with the wishes of his family,” she said.Like many other opposition politicians in Russia, Navalny has been frequently detained by law enforcement and harassed by pro-Kremlin groups. In 2017, he was attacked by several men who threw antiseptic in his face, damaging an eye.Last year, Navalny was rushed to a hospital from prison, where he was serving a sentence following an administrative arrest, with what his team said was suspected poisoning. Doctors said he had a severe allergic attack and discharged him back to prison the following day.Navalny set up campaign offices across Russia and has been promoting opposition candidates in regional elections, challenging members of Russia’s ruling party, United Russia. One of his associates in Khabarovsk, a city in Russia’s Far East that has been engulfed in mass protests against the arrest of the region’s governor, was detained last week after calling for a strike at a rally.

Israel hits Gaza for third time after major uptick in rocket fire overnight-12 rockets fired at Israel from Gaza since Thursday night, damage caused to Sderot home, as violence escalates along restive border region-By TOI staff and Judah Ari Gross    Today, 6:58 am

Israeli warplanes carried out a third round of airstrikes in Gaza early Friday morning in response to a rocket barrage several hours earlier, capping off a night that saw multiple rounds of missile launches and reprisal raids as simmering tensions threatened to escalate. The Israel Defense Forces said that at around 6 a.m., fighter jets and other aircraft carried out strikes on “underground infrastructure belonging to the Hamas terror group,” in response to the attack earlier in the evening in which seven rockets were fired at southern Israel from the Strip.According to the IDF, six of the rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system. A home in the southern Israeli town of Sderot sustained considerable damage in the attack.“We hold Hamas responsible for all terror activity emanating from Gaza,” the military added. The IDF later released footage of the strikes, saying it showed aircraft bombing Hamas “military facilities, weapons production sites and underground infrastructure.”The raid was the third of the night, after two earlier sorties targeted a cement facility used to provide materials for tunnels used by Gazan terror groups and a site where rockets are produced. The Shehab news outlet, which is linked to the Hamas terror group which rules the enclave, reported that at least one person was injured during the strikes east of Khan Younis, in southern Gaza. The Gaza health ministry did not report any injuries. The volley of seven rockets was fired at 2:30 a.m., joining five projectiles that were shot at Israel late Thursday night, two of which failed to reach Israeli territory and three of which were shot down by the Iron Dome system, according to the military. The 12 rockets mark a major escalation of violence, even as tensions have ramped up over the past several weeks with sporadic rocket fire and hundreds of balloons carrying incendiary devices being launched toward Israel, drawing near daily Israeli reprisal fire.Pictures and videos shared on social media of the home that was struck in Sderot showed a kitchen blown apart, windows smashed and large holes in walls and the roof.“We didn’t hear the siren and suddenly there was a loud blast,” Shlomo Malka, the owner of the house, told Ynet news. “We got out of bed and ran to the bomb shelter. Israel cut off fuel transfers via the Kerem Shalom crossing a week ago as a punitive measure following the rocket and balloon attacks. Also on Tuesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would respond to airborne arson attacks in the same manner it does rocket attacks, and warned that there could be another major flareup in Gaza.“I regret that we are also preparing, to the extent necessary, for the possibility of a round or rounds [of fighting]. I hope that we will not get there,” he told local leaders of Gaza-area communities.AFP contributed to this report.

Golden State Killer sentenced to life without possibility of parole-[NBC News]-Elisha Fieldstadt and The Associated Press-August 21, 2020

A former police officer known as the Golden State Killer for his crime spree across California in the 1970s and '80s was sentenced Friday to consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.Joseph DeAngelo, 74, who had eluded authorities for decades, pleaded guilty in June to 13 counts of first-degree murder and 13 rape-related charges in a deal that spared him the death penalty. He also publicly admitted to dozens more sexual assaults for which the statute of limitations had expired.Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Michael Bowman said Friday in a rare sentencing statement that DeAngelo would "meet his death confined behind the walls of state penitentiary.""The court is not saying DeAngelo does not deserve to have the death penalty imposed," Bowman said, but given the age of the defendant and victims, a life sentence made more sense. Bowman said he hopes "survivors will find some resolution" after DeAngelo is permanently placed behind bars.DeAngelo on Friday made a short statement in court addressing victims and their families. "I’ve listened to all your statements. Each one of them. And I’m truly sorry to everyone I’ve hurt. Thank you your honor," he said.Prosecutors said DeAngelo admitted to harming 87 victims in 53 separate crimes spanning 11 California counties. As part of the plea agreement, he was required to register as a sex offender and pay restitution to the victims or their families, as well as any fees or fines.Assistant Chief Deputy District Attorney Thien Ho has said the scope of DeAngelo's crime spree is "simply staggering, encompassing 13 known murders and almost 50 rapes between 1975 and 1986."DeAngelo's crime spree started while he was working as a police officer in Exeter, a northern California community in the San Joaquin Valley near the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Over the years, his crimes morphed from stalking properties to serial rape and murder.DeAngelo went on to marry and raise his own family, escaping investigators' efforts to find him for decades, before he was arrested in Sacramento County in 2018. It is believed to be the first high-profile case to have been cracked with genetic genealogy. Authorities said they used "discarded DNA" to confirm that DeAngelo was the man generations of authorities and citizen sleuths had searched for.His attacks up and down California inspired nicknames such as the Visalia Ransacker, the East Area Rapist, the Original Night Stalker and the Golden State Killer."His monikers reflect the sweeping geographical impact of his crime," Ho said in June. "Each time, he escaped, slipping away silently into the night, leaving communities terrified for years."Some of DeAngelo's victims are in their 80s and 90s. Some are dead. But those who were willing and able spent the week addressing DeAngelo in court in anticipation of his sentencing.Phyllis Henneman said she was 22 years old and "young and carefree" when her life changed forever in June 1976. She was home alone with her sister while their dad was out of town when DeAngelo attacked."Joseph DeAngelo, henceforth called 'the devil incarnate,' broke into my home, blindfolded me, tied me up, threatened my life with a knife and raped me," she said, describing DeAngelo's modus operandi, which also included tying up male partners and spending hours in homes, leaving his victims wondering what terror would come next."Life as I knew it irrevocably changed that day," she said in the statement read by her sister, Karen Veilleux. But DeAngelo's arrest and upcoming sentencing meant "his victims and their families are now free."A recent HBO documentary, "I'll Be Gone in the Dark," detailed the gruesome attacks and the desperate effort to find the killer, even as the years wore on.The documentary is based on crime writer Michelle McNamara's book of the same name, in which she recounted her own obsessive effort to uncover the identity of the Golden State Killer and conviction that genetic genealogy would help her do it. McNamara, the wife of comedian Patton Oswalt, died in 2016, two years before DeAngelo's arrest.Bowman on Friday thanked McNamara by name, along with law enforcement, other citizen detectives and DeAngelo's victims for their "dogged persistence" in their quest to bring him to justice.

U.S.Prosecutors suggest more charges could be coming in Epstein, Maxwell investigation-[Miami Herald]-Ben Wiederald-August 21, 2020

There could be more charges coming related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged sexual abuse of dozens of girls and young women. In a filing Friday, federal prosecutors indicated that the federal grand jury investigation into Epstein, his alleged madam Ghislaine Maxwell and their potential co-conspirators remains active.Maxwell was charged in July in the Southern District of New York with four counts of sexual trafficking of a minor related to allegedly recruiting and grooming three girls between 1994 and 1997 for Epstein to abuse. She is accused of participating in the abuse of one of the girls.Maxwell is seeking to use what her lawyers have described as “critical new information” that they obtained from the government in the criminal case to block the release of her 2016 deposition from a separate federal defamation suit that was brought by Virginia Giuffre, an alleged victim of Epstein and Maxwell, in 2015. The suit was settled in 2017, but the Miami Herald and others have fought to have materials from the case unsealed, arguing that they should have been public in the first place.Federal prosecutors argued in the filing Friday that if Maxwell gains permission to release the information she’d like to put forth it would jeopardize their ongoing investigation. It isn’t clear whether that investigation could potentially lead to more charges against Maxwell, charges against Epstein’s other alleged schedulers and handlers or prosecution of high-profile friends of the multimillionaire.“As the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has stated publicly, the investigation into the conduct of the defendant in this case and other possible co-conspirators of Jeffrey Epstein remains active,” prosecutors wrote. “The full scope and details of that investigation, however, have not been made public.”David S. Weinstein, a former federal prosecutor, said it isn’t uncommon for a grand jury to continue to be active in complex cases even after charges have been brought against some of the targets.“Just because you indict the two people at the top of the conspiracy doesn’t mean you stop looking at other people,” Weinstein said.Epstein’s sexual abuse was the subject of the Miami Herald investigation Perversion of Justice, which examined the extraordinarily lenient sentence Epstein received in 2008 in Florida. The renewed scrutiny of Epstein led federal prosecutors in New York’s Southern District to bring new sex charges against him last July. He was found dead in his prison cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center one month later, the day after thousands of pages were unsealed in the Maxwell suit, detailing her alleged role in recruiting and grooming girls for Epstein and their famous friends.Giuffre has said that Maxwell recruited her in 2000, around the time of her 17th birthday, when Giuffre was working as a spa assistant at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club. Giuffre has said that she was abused by Epstein and directed by Maxwell and Epstein to have sex with a number of their famous friends, including Prince Andrew, former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell, former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson and attorney Alan Dershowitz, among others. All the men have denied the claims and Dershowitz and Giuffre have each filed defamation suits against each other. The prosecutors also revealed Friday how they had obtained Maxwell’s deposition in the civil suit, which they used in bringing two criminal charges of perjury against Maxwell.Maxwell’s lawyers have suggested that Giuffre’s lawyers provided the deposition to federal prosecutors in violation of a protective order in the civil case, but the prosecutors wrote Friday that they had obtained Maxwell’s deposition after applying for permission from two courts to allow a recipient to turn the material over. One of the two courts granted permission, while the other did not. The prosecutors did not notify Maxwell that they were seeking the material.“That is how grand jury subpoenas and investigations frequently work,” prosecutors wrote. “Defense counsel’s overheated rhetoric notwithstanding, there is simply nothing nefarious about the Government obtaining materials through grand jury subpoena process, let alone anything about the manner in which the Government obtained these materials that warrants the relief requested.”Prosecutors took issue with Maxwell’s request to use the information she has obtained from the government in the criminal case to block the unsealing of material in the civil case.“It would be grossly inappropriate for defense counsel to be permitted to sift through the criminal case discovery and cherry-pick materials they may believe could provide some advantage in their efforts to defend against accusations of abuse by victim plaintiffs, delay court-ordered disclosure of previously sealed materials, or any other legal effort the defendant may be undertaking at any particular time,” the prosecutors wrote.

15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

Two storms head for U.S. Gulf in rare hurricane season event-[Reuters]-Liz Hampton-August 21, 2020

(Reuters) - A pair of tropical cyclones forecast to become hurricanes early next week are headed for the U.S. Gulf Coast and will spin over the Gulf's warm waters simultaneously, a rare weather event that could cause massive disruption as they make landfall. There have never been two hurricanes in the U.S Gulf of Mexico at the same time, according to the National Hurricane Center. The closest event was in 1933, when a major hurricane made landfall in south Texas while a separate hurricane weakened to a tropical storm after crossing the Florida Peninsula, the NHC said. The last time two cyclones were in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico was in 2002, when Tropical Storm Fay and Tropical Depression Edouard overlapped for about 18 hours, according to the NHC.Tropical Storm Laura and a separate tropical depression brewing near Honduras could approach the Gulf Coast as hurricanes next week in an area spanning Texas to the Florida Panhandle, according to the National Hurricane Center.Meteorologists say there is still a lot of uncertainty around the systems and how they develop and move in coming days, particularly as they cross land. Both storms currently look on track to remain separate, however, any interaction between the two could change their intensity or trajectory, said Dan Kottlowski of AccuWeather. It is unlikely they would combine, he added."More than likely one will become stronger, and inflict more vertical wind shear causing the other to weaken," Kottlowski. "But if they stay of equal strengthen, then they will probably prevent each other from getting really strong."In some cases when storms interact, they can orbit each other and the speed of one cyclone could accelerate the other, part of something known as the "Fujiwhara effect," said David Streit of Commodity Weather Group.Tropical Storm Laura, which is currently east of the Antilles, was upgraded from a depression on Friday and has sustained winds of 45 miles per hour (72 kph), according to the NHC. Laura is forecast to make landfall as a hurricane on Wednesday.

2 hurricanes could threaten Gulf Coast at same time next week-[Good Morning America]-MAX GOLEMBO and DAN PECK-August 21, 2020

Two tropical systems are on a path toward the Gulf of Mexico and could possibly make landfall around the same time in the U.S. early next week. The latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center depicts two hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday. There are only a few times, according to NOAA, when two tropical cyclones have been in the Gulf at the same time. The most recent example was in 1959.Tropical Storm Laura developed in the Atlantic near the northeastern Caribbean Islands on Friday morning, while Tropical Depression 14 was in the western Caribbean near Honduras Friday. In the near term, Laura will be hitting the northern Leeward Islands on Friday night and Puerto Rico on Saturday. Tropical Depression 14 will bring heavy rain and gusty winds to parts of the Yucatan Peninsula on Saturday as well. It's too soon to talk details or impacts for the Gulf Coast region, however, the forecast later this weekend will be able to give more specifics.Laura will approach the Texas and Louisiana coastline as a possible Category 1 hurricane with winds of 75 mph on Tuesday.Tropical Storm Laura has sustained winds of 45 mph and was moving west at 17 mph Friday afternoon.Tropical storm warnings are in effect from the northern Leeward Island to Puerto Rico and the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. Tropical storm watches have been posted from the northern coast of Haiti to Turks and Caicos and the southeastern Bahamas.Laura will bring heavy rain and gusty winds to Puerto Rico on Saturday with 3 to 6 inches of rain forecast and flash flooding possible. The storm is a quick mover and will be focusing more on the Dominican Republic by late Saturday evening.Laura will then move up the eastern Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday and near the coast on Wednesday morning. How much Laura interacts with the Caribbean Islands will play a big role in its intensity down the road.Tropical Depression 14 continues to churn just off the coast of Honduras on Friday afternoon. Tropical storm watches and warnings are in effect for portions of the Yucatan Peninsula.TD 14 is forecast to strengthen into Tropical Storm Marco later Friday and bring heavy rain and strong winds to parts of the Yucatan Peninsula Saturday into Sunday.he system will then move into the Gulf Coast after passing across Mexico and approach the western Gulf Coast on Tuesday either as a strong tropical storm or hurricane.ABC News' William Mansell and Mark Osborne contributed to this report.

OZONE DEPLETION JUDGEMENT ON THE EARTH DUE TO SIN

ISAIAH 30:26-27
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold,(7X OR 7-DEGREES HOTTER) as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people,(ISRAEL) and healeth the stroke of their wound.
27 Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

MATTHEW 24:21-22,29
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened,(DAY LIGHT HOURS SHORTENED) there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake (ISRAELS SAKE) those days shall be shortened (Daylight hours shortened)(THE ASTEROID HITS EARTH HERE)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.
