Death toll passes 190 as storms ravage US south

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (AFP) – The worst storms to slam southern US states in years flattened buildings and overturned vehicles, with intense tornados and floods leaving a trail of destruction and 190 people dead.The severe weather killed 128 people in Alabama on Wednesday alone, authorities said, and President Barack Obama said Washington would be rushing assistance to the battered southeastern state.
States of emergency were declared in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and Oklahoma, and governors called out the National Guard to help with rescue and cleanup operations.The National Weather Service (NWS) had preliminary reports of more than 300 tornados since storms began Friday, including more than 130 on Wednesday alone.Alabama was especially badly hit, caught by two lines of storms and an evening tornado that tore through the city of Tuscaloosa, home to the University of Alabama.Tuscaloosa Mayor Walter Maddox told CNN that the tornado had obliterated blocks and blocks of his city, leaving 36 people dead there.Infrastructure has been absolutely devastated, he said early Thursday.When you look at this path of destruction, likely five to seven miles (eight to 11 kilometers) long and half a mile to a mile wide, I don't know how anyone survived,Maddox said.There are parts of this city I don't recognize.... It is a dark hour for our city.A tornado also struck the city of Birmingham and officials were still assessing the damage.
This has been a very serious and deadly event that's affected our state, and it's not over yet,Alabama Governor Robert Brantley told reporters after the second string of storms.Stunned Birmingham residents assessed the damage early Thursday, some counting their blessings to still be alive, others distraught over the loss of their loved ones or homes.There were two-by-fours (wooden beams) falling out of the sky, convenience store manager Jack Welch said, adding that there were well over 30 homes destroyed just behind his store in Birmingham.Facilities manager John Filmore said he was grateful to be alive, as he walked up his front steps -- the only part of his home still intact after a tornado ripped it to its foundations.Some personal property swept up by the killer twisters was found 50 miles (80 kilometers) away, as power was knocked out in communities across the south.The Tuesday-Wednesday storms are believed to be the deadliest US natural disaster since Hurricane Katrina of 2005, and Accuweather.com said the tornados were the worst since 310 people were killed on April 3, 1974.The NWS issued a rare high-risk warning of tornados, hail, flash flooding and dangerous lightning for parts of Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi.It warned that severe weather could also strike 21 states from the Great Lakes down to the Gulf Coast and across to the Atlantic, and tornados were reported as far east as Virginia and Maryland. In Mississippi the storm killed 32 people and caused damage in 50 of its 82 counties, according to Greg Flynn at the state's emergency management agency.
He said most of the deaths and damage were caused by tornados and high winds. State officials reported 11 dead in Arkansas, 10 killed in Georgia, seven in Virginia, and another three killed in Missouri and Tennessee, with the overall toll likely to rise. Storm victims across the region were trapped in homes, trailers and cars by falling trees. Hail the size of golf balls cracked windows.Roads were washed out or rendered impassable by fallen trees and power lines across the region. Homes, schools and businesses were flattened, flooded and set on fire by lightning.Our citizens have endured days of consecutive severe storms and flooding,said Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear.We urge Kentuckians to remain on alert until this storm system finally passes.Hundreds of people were evacuated from their homes in Missouri after levees failed to hold back swollen rivers.I'm just glad my family is safe, said Chris Pigg, who spent the night at a shelter with his wife and daughter and wasn't sure if he'd have a home to return to after the Black River breached the levee in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.The death toll was set to rise as skies are not expected to clear until late Thursday or Friday, and there will be little time to mop up, as another major storm system is forecast to bring heavy rain and high winds on Saturday.The storms come after a wet spring and a winter of heavy snowfall which left the ground saturated and rivers running high.Officials were considering deliberately destroying levees in some areas to ease pressure on swollen rivers, some of which are so high that barges have become trapped under bridges.As much as 18 inches (45 centimeters) of rain had fallen from Saturday through Tuesday night in some areas.It's producing major to record flooding in a lot of those river basins, said Jim Keeney, deputy chief of the weather service's central region.
Death toll at 25 in latest bout of storms

BIRMINGHAM, Ala (Reuters) – The death toll this week from tornadoes and severe storms pummeling the South rose to 25 people and the nasty weather is not yet over, emergency officials and weather forecasters said on Wednesday.Governors in Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee each declared a state of emergency, and in Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour declared a state of emergency for 39 counties.The latest casualties were in Louisiana and Tennessee.A woman in Chattanooga, Tennessee, was killed at about 3:30 p.m. when a tree fell on her mobile home, said police Sergeant Jerri Weary.Two people in Monroe, Louisiana, were believed to have drowned during heavy flooding early Wednesday, said police spokeswoman Tarra Smith.These were in addition to five deaths in Mississippi, six confirmed in Alabama and 11 fatalities in Arkansas during the latest round of spring storms.The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency revised the state's storm-related death count to five since Tuesday after one county amended its number. The state previously reported six deaths.Severe weather in Mississippi damaged homes, downed trees and power lines and sparked flash flooding.
One Mississippi death was a worker killed Wednesday in Yazoo County while removing a tree from a roadway, said spokesman Jeff Rent.National park service officials said a Covington, Louisiana, police officer died when a tree snapped and fell on his tent at a Choctaw County, Mississippi, campground. The man was shielding his daughter, who was not hurt.Alabama officials confirmed six fatalities as a result of the deadly weather that ripped through most of the state overnight.
POWER LINES SNAPPED
Winds of 100 miles per hour pounded central Alabama early Wednesday, snapping trees across power lines, roads and buildings, said Mark Kelly, spokesman for the Jefferson County Emergency Management Office.Approximately 245,000 customers were without power in the lower two-thirds of the state, said Alabama Power spokesman Michael Sznajderman.The central counties of Shelby and Jefferson, which includes the state's most populous city of Birmingham, had almost 150,000 households and businesses with outages.In one suburban Birmingham neighborhood, a family was briefly trapped inside their home by fallen trees.As I was grabbing my daughter and running to the closet, trees hit the house, said Lisa Hey, who estimated 90 percent of the trees in her neighborhood were uprooted.Several parts of north Texas, including areas which have been charred by the state's massive wildfires, also were pounded by tornadoes and severe thunderstorms Tuesday night.Numerous homes have been damaged or destroyed, said Lieutenant Chuck Allen, emergency management coordinator in Van Zandt County, located about halfway between Dallas and Tyler.Residents in Tennessee are coping with flooding, power outages and blocked roads. Twenty-six county school systems were closed on Wednesday, and the airport in Murfreesboro sustained damage.We've got pockets of trees down and localized flooding from west to east Tennessee,said Emergency Management Agency spokesman Dean Flener.
AccuWeather.com meteorologists said the Tennessee Valley will bear the brunt of tornadoes expected Wednesday.The worst of the storms are expected into the evening. The corridor from northern Mississippi and northern Alabama to southeastern Kentucky is likely to be the hardest hit, AccuWeather.com reported.A powerful storm system in that region could spawn large and long-tracking tornadoes, meteorologists said. If strong tornadoes like this hit any populated area, they could result in complete destruction,AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Heather Buchman said on the Web site.
FLOOD CONCERN
Floods remain a big concern in several states, where days of rain and the melted snow from the winter's heavy falls have caused rising rivers and saturated soils. A rural Missouri county was evacuating residents on Wednesday from a 130,000-acre area that will be flooded if the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers decides to intentionally breach a Mississippi River levee in an effort to keep the historic river town of Cairo, Illinois, from flooding.Flooding became more widespread in Arkansas on Wednesday after several days of intense storms. The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department reported numerous road closures, including the partial collapse of a highway near Harrison.Emergency officials in Tennessee are bracing for floods expected along the Mississippi River early next week.The storms and flooding are the latest in the violent weather that has pummeled much of the mid-South this month. Two weeks ago at least 47 people died as storms tore a wide path from Oklahoma all the way to North Carolina. A poll shows that 61percent of Americans support defending Israel if it is attacked –more than those who support defending all but three other countries.Polls on this topic are carried out by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC, on behalf of Rasmussen Reports. The most recent of these surveys, taken last week, dealt only with nine countries – not including Israel, which was asked about in an earlier survey.The most recent findings show that Canada, Great Britain and Australia enjoy the greatest support among Americans in terms of willingness to come to their defense. Eighty percent said they would support coming to Canada’s support, 74% for Great Britain, and 65% for Australia. Next on the list was Israel, with 61%, as opposed to 26% who said they would oppose supporting Israelif it was attacked.The Bahamas and Panama each enjoy a 58% support rate among Americans in this regard.In general, Americans are not eager to send their sons to defend other countries. The US has a military defense treaty with Brazil, for instance, but only 33% of Americans say they would support going to its defense if it were attacked; 53% would oppose. Peres Rails Fatah-Hamas Agreement as Fatal Mistake

Report: Abbas’ Holocaust-Denial Dissertation Widely-Taught in PA

Research by the Center for Near East Policy Research Center has found that the doctoral dissertation of PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas stars throughout the Palestinian Authority educational curriculum, and is the basis for Holocaust studies in the PA.
The Center’s Director, David Bedein, has asked Education Minister Gideon Saar and the government of Israel to demand that the PA remove the work from its school and from its curricula.Bedein wrote that the Center is engaged in preparing a movie on the PA educational system, in the course of which it tracks that which is taught in PA classrooms. Throughout the educational system of the PA,he wrote to Saar,we have found that the doctorate of Mahmoud Abbas stars, and forms the basis of PA Holocaust studies.Downgrades Number of Victims, Accuses Zionists of Collaboration
The doctorate was published as a book in 1984, entitled,The Other Side: the Secret Relationship Between Nazism and Zionism.It was completed in 1982 at a university in Communist Russia, and was defended at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It downgrades the number of Holocaust victims to [possibly] below one million,and accuses Zionist leaders of encouraging the persecution of Jews.He also denies that the gas chambers were used to murder Jews, quoting a scientific study to that effect by French Holocaust-denier Robert Faurisson.

Arab Upheavals to Boost Mideast Economies?

The wave of violent upheavals shaking the Arab world could eventually boost and revitalize the region's economies, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Wednesday.In the short term, however, the region's oil-importing economies - including Egypt, Tunisia and Syria - face a problematic rise in crude oil prices alongside a virtual standstill in tourism and foreign direct investment. According to the IMF's Regional Economic Outlook report, these developments raise the possibility of spreading unrest, sharply higher oil prices, and rising fiscal deficits.The oil-importing economies will grow by just 2.3% this year, the Washington-based body predicted. In Egypt, economic growth may drop from 5.1 percent last year to just 1.0 percent this year.However, in the longer term, the changes taking place in the region could provide a boost for its economies,the global economic body said. A more inclusive reform agenda that meets the population's demands by providing greater access to opportunity and more competition would make the economies more dynamic and leverage the region's inherent strengths.
Regional strong points, it explained, include a young labor force and a privileged geographic position at the crossroads between major markets in Europe and fast-growing emerging and developing economies in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.The IMF earlier this month revised its economic growth projection for the Middle East and North Africa region to 4.1% this year, down from a prediction of 4.6% growth made in January.The economies of Egypt and Tunisia will also suffer from the effects of the civil war in neighboring Libya, which is causing the return of more than 100,000 migrant workers to their homelands.The IMF urged Mideast leaders to create jobs for their population while tackling corruption. EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - Syria is facing suspension of EU aid worth €130 million and a freeze on €1.3 billion in European investment funds as further details of sanctions under consideration by the bloc in response to the Arab government's bloody crackdown began to emerge on Wednesday (27 April).EU ambassadors are scheduled to meet on Friday to discuss how to up the pressure on the regime of Bashar al-Assad if the violence continues. Human rights activists say that some 400 people have been killed in the uprising.We are considering all options,said Michael Mann, the spokesman for EU's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton.Speaking to reporters, he added: It is not acceptable to fire on demonstrators,although he refused to discuss potential sanctions against Damascus.However, Ashton on Wednesday circulated a paper outlining possible options which, according to an EU official, include suspension of agreements with the country.The EU has quite a few programmes in partnership with the government, the source added.Details are being kept tightly guarded but a document released to journalists the same day gave a list of the EU aid funds in the frame beyond the usual things that have been imposed against other governments in the wider region involved in repression of pro-democracy forces, including asset freezes and travel bans.
The commission co-finances a number of investment programmes in Syria in concert with the European Investment Bank, whose portfolio exceeds €1.3 billion, the second largest EIB portfolio in the region after Egypt.In addition, since 2007, the EU has granted €80 million to assist with the influx of Iraqi refugees.The EU has a draft Association Agreement with Syria, which was signed on the Brussels side in October 2009. The Syrian signature is pending however as Damascus claims part of agreement will have negative impact on its socio-economic situation.The bloc also currently delivers an aid programme worth €129 million over the next three years, a sum that had been sharply hiked in the last year by 32 percent over the previous programming period.At the time of the funding announcement, the EU had marked in a document detailing how the aid was to be spent its backing for the thaw between Brussels and Damascus in previous years.This illustrates the EU's willingness to step up its support to advance Syria's reform agenda and provide adequate means to facilitate implementation of the Association Agreement upon its entry into force,the document read.This willingness for further support to Syria now appears to have been closed off.The €129 million aid sums aimed at supporting the transformation of the country to a social market economy, with funds for the development of renewable energy, strengthening of civil society organisations, rural development and administrative and economic reforms.Specifically, the programmes back fostering entrepreneurship, boosting use of solar and wind energy, promoting energy efficiency by industries and households and interconnection of regional electricity and gas markets.
The aid was also to target the poorest rural areas, notably the northeastern region - the most arid area of the country and which hit by drought for the last three years. The region is also home to most of the country's livestock. Combined with soaring global food prices, the droughts have severely affected socio-economic conditions there, according to the EU document.Funds are supplied to herders, poor and small-scale farmers and their families, aiming to improve the productivity of their land and mitigate drought impacts.Aid is also focussed on the introduction of efficient water management methods and increasing access to drinkable water.Other monies go toward efforts to push up the number of low-income families receiving social assistance benefits, update school curricula and teacher training and lower drop-out rates. The EU is the main international donor in the Syrian education sector.Dovetailing the EU discussion on Friday, the United Nations Human Rights Council is to hold a special session on Syria the same day.Ten EU member states, along with Japan, Mexico, Senegal, South Korea, the US and Zambia requested the UN meeting.Members of the UN Security Council have yet to back a statement on the crackdown but are due later on Wednesday to resume discussion on a declaration that would condemn the violence, call for restraint and back a UN investigation.UK foreign secretary William Hague on Tuesday said that it was not too late for al-Assad, and even as he threatened EU sanctions, kept the door open for the Syrian leader should he back down.Syria is now at a fork in the road. Its government can still choose to bring about the radical reform which alone can provide peace and stability in Syria and for the long term, and we urge it do so. Or it can choose ever more violent repression, which can only bring short term security for the authorities there. If it does so, we will work with our European partners and others to take measures, including sanctions, that will have an impact on the regime.EU states generally back a tougher line on Assad but there remain fears that whoever replaces the regime might strengthen Iran's position in the region.Diplomats are also keen to stress the distinction between the situation in Syria and Libya.Of course it's bad, but we are not anywhere near the scale of killings seen in Libya, said another EU official, We have to keep this in perspective.

But travel freedom in Europe is such an important achievement that it should not be up for renegotiation.In a parliamentary debate, Dutch Immigration Minister Gerd Leers said: I will resist those who call for simply re-instating border controls, for that goes against an open Europe, but I welcome the debate on how to strengthen and improve the Schengen rules to combat illegal immigration, especially in these times of turmoil.Malta and Greece stressed the need for other member states to show solidarity with southern rim EU countries. Donald Trump is really proud and really honored to have been the game changer in getting President Obama to finally release his long-form birth certificate on Wednesday morning.Trump said he was really honored to have really played to have played a really big role in hopefully, hopefully, getting rid of this issue.Touching down in New Hampshire for a few private meetings, Trump held a press conference at local airport to discuss the just-released documents. While he still needs to look at it,Trump said he hopes the release of the certificate will put to rest not just any debate about the President’s legitimacy but also the inquisition by journalists who have grilled Trump about his public remarks regarding the certificate.The real estate tycoon has used the birther issue as the launching pad of his most recent potential presidency bid. As journalists continuously harangue Trump, the issue launched him to the top of the polls of potential Republican candidates. In the past two weeks, Trump has fought back, asking journalists why they aren’t asking him questions on other policy areas.

She believes a large number of white Americans are racist.In order to trivialize the issue, the corporate media used a recent PPP poll to make it a Republican versus Democrat kind of thing. In the poll, 48% of registered Republican voters said Obama was not born in the U.S., while 26% said he was. Additionally, 26% said they were unsure,writes Jon Terbush for Talking Points Memo.The poll was conducted after billionaire Donald Trump raised the issue as part of his undeclared bid to replace Obama in 2012 — or maybe just grab the media spotlight like any other narcissist. In 2008, in response to media inquiries, the President’s campaign requested his birth certificate from the state of Hawaii. The state sent the campaign the President’s birth certificate, the same legal documentation provided to all Hawaiians as proof of birth in state, and the campaign immediately posted it on the internet. That birth certificate can be seen here (PDF).When any citizen born in Hawaii requests their birth certificate, they receive exactly what the President received. In fact, the document posted on the campaign website is what Hawaiians use to get a driver’s license from the state and the document recognized by the Federal Government and the courts for all legal purposes. That’s because it is the birth certificate. This is not and should not be an open question.The President believed the distraction over his birth certificate wasn’t good for the country. It may have been good politics and good TV, but it was bad for the American people and distracting from the many challenges we face as a country. Therefore, the President directed his counsel to review the legal authority for seeking access to the long form certificate and to request on that basis that the Hawaii State Department of Health make an exception to release a copy of his long form birth certificate. Despite some political commentators insisting that the White House release of what it claims to be Barack Obama’s long form birth certificate represents the end of the crazy birther fringe movement, those who most fiercely pushed doubts surrounding the president’s eligibility are not convinced.While presumptive Republican candidate Donald Trump welcomed the release of the document, he was quick to cast suspicion as to why it took so long and if the certificate was even genuine.Trump said it was amazing that the document surfaced all of a sudden after he had begun asking questions about the controversy, adding that the certificate should be analyzed to determine its authenticity.Indeed, the Smoking Gun website has already compiled a list of inconsistencies found in the document, including asking, If the original document was in a bound volume (as reflected by the curvature of the left hand side of the certificate), how can the green patterned background of the document’s safety paper be so seamless? Meanwhile, World Net Daily editor Joseph Farah, who has been at the forefront of the birther movement, heavily promoting Jerome Corsi’s investigations into the matter along with his new book, Where’s The Birth Certificate?, reacted to the news by saying the birth certificate raises as many questions as it answers.
At the center of the storm is the argument about whether the fact that Obama’s father was born in Kenya, which is confirmed on the document released by the White House today, makes Obama ineligible to become president because he is not a natural born citizen of the United States.Some of the cases challenging Obama have explained that he was a dual citizen through his father at his birth, and they contend the framers of the Constitution excluded dual citizens from qualifying as natural born citizens,” reports WND, meaning that the document released by the White House today could even lead to proving Obama’s ineligibility.The news media and the political establishment were quick to rush to judgment regarding Obama’s eligibility in 2008, without any basis. What might the phrase natural-born citizen of the United States imply under the U.S. Constitution? The phrase has always been obscure due to the lack of any single authoritative source to confer in order to understand the condition of citizenship the phrase recognizes. Learning what the phrase might have meant following the Declaration of Independence, and the adoption of the Fourteenth Amendment, requires detective work. As with all detective work, eliminating the usual suspects from the beginning goes a long way in quickly solving a case.
What Natural-Born Citizen Could Not Mean
Could a natural-born citizen simply mean citizenship due to place of birth?
Unlikely in the strict sense because we know one can be native born and yet not a native born citizen of this country. There were even disputes whether anyone born within the District of Columbia or in the territories were born citizens of the United States (they were generally referred to as inhabitants instead.) National Government could make no territorial allegiance demands within the several States because as Madison explained it, the powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State.Jurisdiction over citizenship via birth within the several States was part of the ordinary course of affairs of the States that only local laws could affect. Early acts of Naturalization recognized the individual State Legislatures as the only authority who could make anyone a citizen of a State. Framer James Wilson said, a citizen of the United States is he, who is a citizen of at least some one state in the Union.These citizens of each State were united together through Article IV, Sec. II of the U.S. Constitution, and thus, no act of Congress was required to make citizens of the individual States citizens of the United States.
Prior to the Revolutionary War place of birth within the dominions of the crown was the principle criterion for establishing perpetual allegiance and citizenship. After independence perpetual allegiance was abandoned for expatriation and, as Madison stated, citizenship was strictly left to the individual States to define.
Could a natural-born citizen perhaps be synonymous with the British term natural-born subject?
It is very doubtful the framers adopted the doctrine found under the old English doctrine of natural-born subject.The British doctrine allowed for double allegiances, something the founders considered improper and dangerous. The American naturalization process required all males to twice renounce all allegiances with other governments and pledge their allegiance to this one before finally becoming a citizen. House Report No. 784, dated June 22, 1874, stated, The United States have not recognized a ‘double allegiance.’ By our law a citizen is bound to be ‘true and faithful’ alone to our government.It wouldn’t be practical for the United States to claim a child as a citizen when the child’s natural country of origin equally claims him/her because doing so would leave the child with competing legal obligations.
Under the old English common law doctrine of natural-born subject, birth itself was an act of naturalization that required no prior consent or demanded allegiance to the nation in advance. Furthermore, birth was viewed as enjoining a perpetual allegiance upon all that could never be severed or altered by any change of time or act of anyone. England’s perpetual allegiance due from birth was extremely unpopular in this country; often referred to as absurd barbarism, or simply perpetual nonsense. America went to war with England over the doctrine behind natural-born subject in June of 1812.
Because Britain considered all who were born within the dominions of the crown to be its natural-born subjects even after becoming naturalized citizens of the United States, led to British vessels blockading American ports. Under the British blockade, every American ship entering or leaving was boarded by soldiers in search of British born subjects. At least 6,000 American citizens who were found to be British natural-born subjects were pressed into military service on behalf of the British Empire, and thus, the reason we went to war.
Fourteenth Amendment
Whatever might had been the correct understanding of natural-born citizen prior to 1866, the adoption of the Fourteenth Amendment certainly changes the view because for the first time we have a written national rule declaring who are citizens through birth or naturalization. Who may be born citizens is conditional upon being born subject to the jurisdiction of the United States - a condition not required under the common law. The legislative definition of subject to the jurisdiction thereof was defined as Not owing allegiance to anybody else, which is vastly different from local jurisdiction due to physical location alone.This national rule prevents us from interpreting natural-born citizen under common law rules because it eliminates the possibility of a child being born with more than one claim for allegiance.The primary author of the citizenship clause, Sen. Jacob M. Howard, said the “word jurisdiction, as here employed, ought to be construed so as to imply a full and complete jurisdiction on the part of the United States, coextensive in all respects with the constitutional power of the United States, whether exercised by Congress, by the executive, or by the judicial department; that is to say, the same jurisdiction in extent and quality as applies to every citizen of the United States now.United States Attorney General, George Williams, whom was a U.S. Senator aligned with Radical Republicans during the drafting of the Fourteenth Amendment in 1866, ruled in 1873 the word jurisdiction under the Fourteenth Amendment must be understood to mean absolute and complete jurisdiction, such as the United States had over its citizens before the adoption of this amendment.He added,Political and military rights and duties do not pertain to anyone else.
Essentially then, subject to the jurisdiction thereof means the same jurisdiction the United States exercises over its own citizens, i.e., only citizens of the United States come within its operation since citizens of the United States do not owe allegiance to some other nation at the same time they do the United States. This makes arguing the physical presence of being subject to laws silly because being subject to another countries laws while visiting makes no change to an aliens allegiance to their native country.
Natural-Born Citizen Defined
One universal point most all early publicists agreed on was natural-born citizen must mean one who is a citizen by no act of law. If a person owes their citizenship to some act of law (naturalization for example), they cannot be considered a natural-born citizen. This leads us to defining natural-born citizen under the laws of nature - laws the founders recognized and embraced.Under the laws of nature, every child born requires no act of law to establish the fact the child inherits through nature his/her father’s citizenship as well as his name (or even his property) through birth. This law of nature is also recognized by law of nations. Sen. Howard said the citizenship clause under the Fourteenth Amendment was by virtue of natural law and national law.The advantages of Natural Law is competing allegiances between nations are not claimed, or at least with those nations whose custom is to not make citizens of other countries citizens without their consent. Any alternations or conflicts due to a child’s natural citizenship are strictly a creature of local municipal law. In the year 1866, the United States for the first time adopted a local municipal law under Sec. 1992 of U.S. Revised Statutes that read: All persons born in the United States and not subject to any foreign power, excluding Indians not taxed, are declared to be citizens of the United States.Rep. John A. Bingham commenting on Section 1992 said it means every human being born within the jurisdiction of the United States of parents not owing allegiance to any foreign sovereignty is, in the language of your Constitution itself, a natural born citizen. Does the gentleman mean that any person, born within the limits of the Republic, and who has offended against no law, can rightfully be exiled from any State or from any rood of the Republic? Does the gentleman undertake to say that here, in the face of the provision in the Constitution, that persons born within the limits of the Republic, of parents who are not the subjects of any other sovereignty, are native-born citizens, whether they be black or white? There is not a textbook referred to in any court which does not recognise the principle that I assert. (Cong. Globe, 37th, 2nd Sess., 407 (1862))Bingham subscribed to the same view as most everyone in Congress at the time that in order to be born a citizen of the United States one must be born within the allegiance of the Nation. Bingham had explained years earlier that to be born within the allegiance of the United States the parents, or more precisely, the father, must not owe allegiance to some other foreign sovereignty (remember the U.S. abandoned England’s natural allegiance doctrine). This of course, explains why emphasis of not owing allegiance to anyone else was the effect of being subject to the jurisdiction of the United States.It should be noted this allegiance due under England’s common law and American law are of two different species. Under the common law one owed a personal allegiance to the King as an individual upon birth. Under the American system there was no individual ruler to owe a personal allegiance to.The constitutional requirement for the President of the United States to be a natural-born citizen had one purpose according to St. George Tucker: That provision in the constitution which requires that the president shall be a native-born citizen (unless he were a citizen of the United States when the constitution was adopted,) is a happy means of security against foreign influence, which, wherever it is capable of being exerted, is to he dreaded more than the plague. The admission of foreigners into our councils, consequently, cannot be too much guarded against; their total exclusion from a station to which foreign nations have been accustomed to, attach ideas of sovereign power, sacredness of character, and hereditary right, is a measure of the most consummate policy and wisdom. …The title of king, prince, emperor, or czar, without the smallest addition to his powers, would have rendered him a member of the fraternity of crowned heads: their common cause has more than once threatened the desolation of Europe. To have added a member to this sacred family in America, would have invited and perpetuated among us all the evils of Pandora’s Box. Charles Pinckney in 1800 said the presidential eligibility clause was designed to insure … attachment to the country. President Washington warned a passionate attachment of one nation for another, produces a variety of evils, and goes on to say:
Sympathy for the favorite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest, in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter, without adequate inducement or justification. It leads also to concessions to the favorite nation, of privileges denied to others, which is apt doubly to injure the nation making the concessions; by unnecessarily parting with what ought to have been retained; and by exciting jealousy, ill- will, and a disposition to retaliate, in the parties from whom equal privileges are withheld.
And it gives to ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens, (who devote themselves to the favorite nation,) facility to betray or sacrifice the interests of their own country, without odium, sometimes even with popularity; gilding, with the appearance of a virtuous sense of obligation, a commendable deference for public opinion, or a laudable zeal for public good, the base or foolish compliances of ambition, corruption, or infatuation.What better way to insure attachment to the country then to require the President to have inherited his American citizenship through his American father and not through a foreign father. Any child can be born anywhere in the country and removed by their father to be raised in his native country. The risks would be for the child to return in later life to reside in this country bringing with him foreign influences and intrigues, and thus, making such a citizen indistinguishable from a naturalized citizen.
Conclusion
Extending citizenship to non-citizens through birth based solely upon locality is nothing more than mere municipal law that has no extra-territorial effect as proven from the English practice of it. On the other hand, citizenship by descent through the father is natural law and is recognized by all nations (what nation doesn’t recognize citizenship of children born wherever to their own citizens?). Thus, a natural-born citizen is one whose citizenship is recognized by law of nations rather than mere local recognition.Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, James F. Wilson of Iowa, confirmed this in 1866: We must depend on the general law relating to subjects and citizens recognized by all nations for a definition, and that must lead us to the conclusion that every person born in the United States is a natural-born citizen of such States, except that of children born on our soil to temporary sojourners or representatives of foreign Governments.When a child inherits the citizenship of their father they become a natural-born citizen of the nation their father belongs regardless of where they might be born. It should be pointed out that citizenship through descent of the father was recognized by U.S. Naturalization law whereby children became citizens themselves as soon as their father had become a naturalized citizen.In a nation that has abandoned the English tradition of perpetual allegiance to the King upon birth for the principal of expatriation, the requirement of preexisting allegiance of the father can be the only method for a child to be born into the allegiance of the nation, and thus, a natural-born citizen.

In 2008, in response to media inquiries, the President’s campaign requested his birth certificate from the state of Hawaii. The state sent the campaign the President’s birth certificate, the same legal documentation provided to all Hawaiians as proof of birth in state, and the campaign immediately posted it on the internet. That birth certificate can be seen here (PDF).When any citizen born in Hawaii requests their birth certificate, they receive exactly what the President received. In fact, the document posted on the campaign website is what Hawaiians use to get a driver’s license from the state and the document recognized by the Federal Government and the courts for all legal purposes. That’s because it is the birth certificate. This is not and should not be an open question.The President believed the distraction over his birth certificate wasn’t good for the country. It may have been good politics and good TV, but it was bad for the American people and distracting from the many challenges we face as a country. Therefore, the President directed his counsel to review the legal authority for seeking access to the long form certificate and to request on that basis that the Hawaii State Department of Health make an exception to release a copy of his long form birth certificate. Despite some political commentators insisting that the White House release of what it claims to be Barack Obama’s long form birth certificate represents the end of the crazy birther fringe movement, those who most fiercely pushed doubts surrounding the president’s eligibility are not convinced.While presumptive Republican candidate Donald Trump welcomed the release of the document, he was quick to cast suspicion as to why it took so long and if the certificate was even genuine.Trump said it was amazing that the document surfaced all of a sudden after he had begun asking questions about the controversy, adding that the certificate should be analyzed to determine its authenticity.Indeed, the Smoking Gun website has already compiled a list of inconsistencies found in the document, including asking, If the original document was in a bound volume (as reflected by the curvature of the left hand side of the certificate), how can the green patterned background of the document’s safety paper be so seamless? Meanwhile, World Net Daily editor Joseph Farah, who has been at the forefront of the birther movement, heavily promoting Jerome Corsi’s investigations into the matter along with his new book, Where’s The Birth Certificate?, reacted to the news by saying the birth certificate raises as many questions as it answers.
At the center of the storm is the argument about whether the fact that Obama’s father was born in Kenya, which is confirmed on the document released by the White House today, makes Obama ineligible to become president because he is not a natural born citizen of the United States.Some of the cases challenging Obama have explained that he was a dual citizen through his father at his birth, and they contend the framers of the Constitution excluded dual citizens from qualifying as natural born citizens,” reports WND, meaning that the document released by the White House today could even lead to proving Obama’s ineligibility.The news media and the political establishment were quick to rush to judgment regarding Obama’s eligibility in 2008, without any basis. What might the phrase natural-born citizen of the United States imply under the U.S. Constitution? The phrase has always been obscure due to the lack of any single authoritative source to confer in order to understand the condition of citizenship the phrase recognizes. Learning what the phrase might have meant following the Declaration of Independence, and the adoption of the Fourteenth Amendment, requires detective work. As with all detective work, eliminating the usual suspects from the beginning goes a long way in quickly solving a case.
What Natural-Born Citizen Could Not Mean
Could a natural-born citizen simply mean citizenship due to place of birth?
Unlikely in the strict sense because we know one can be native born and yet not a native born citizen of this country. There were even disputes whether anyone born within the District of Columbia or in the territories were born citizens of the United States (they were generally referred to as inhabitants instead.) National Government could make no territorial allegiance demands within the several States because as Madison explained it, the powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State.Jurisdiction over citizenship via birth within the several States was part of the ordinary course of affairs of the States that only local laws could affect. Early acts of Naturalization recognized the individual State Legislatures as the only authority who could make anyone a citizen of a State. Framer James Wilson said, a citizen of the United States is he, who is a citizen of at least some one state in the Union.These citizens of each State were united together through Article IV, Sec. II of the U.S. Constitution, and thus, no act of Congress was required to make citizens of the individual States citizens of the United States.
Prior to the Revolutionary War place of birth within the dominions of the crown was the principle criterion for establishing perpetual allegiance and citizenship. After independence perpetual allegiance was abandoned for expatriation and, as Madison stated, citizenship was strictly left to the individual States to define.
Could a natural-born citizen perhaps be synonymous with the British term natural-born subject?
It is very doubtful the framers adopted the doctrine found under the old English doctrine of natural-born subject.The British doctrine allowed for double allegiances, something the founders considered improper and dangerous. The American naturalization process required all males to twice renounce all allegiances with other governments and pledge their allegiance to this one before finally becoming a citizen. House Report No. 784, dated June 22, 1874, stated, The United States have not recognized a ‘double allegiance.’ By our law a citizen is bound to be ‘true and faithful’ alone to our government.It wouldn’t be practical for the United States to claim a child as a citizen when the child’s natural country of origin equally claims him/her because doing so would leave the child with competing legal obligations.
Under the old English common law doctrine of natural-born subject, birth itself was an act of naturalization that required no prior consent or demanded allegiance to the nation in advance. Furthermore, birth was viewed as enjoining a perpetual allegiance upon all that could never be severed or altered by any change of time or act of anyone. England’s perpetual allegiance due from birth was extremely unpopular in this country; often referred to as absurd barbarism, or simply perpetual nonsense. America went to war with England over the doctrine behind natural-born subject in June of 1812.
Because Britain considered all who were born within the dominions of the crown to be its natural-born subjects even after becoming naturalized citizens of the United States, led to British vessels blockading American ports. Under the British blockade, every American ship entering or leaving was boarded by soldiers in search of British born subjects. At least 6,000 American citizens who were found to be British natural-born subjects were pressed into military service on behalf of the British Empire, and thus, the reason we went to war.
Fourteenth Amendment
Whatever might had been the correct understanding of natural-born citizen prior to 1866, the adoption of the Fourteenth Amendment certainly changes the view because for the first time we have a written national rule declaring who are citizens through birth or naturalization. Who may be born citizens is conditional upon being born subject to the jurisdiction of the United States - a condition not required under the common law. The legislative definition of subject to the jurisdiction thereof was defined as Not owing allegiance to anybody else, which is vastly different from local jurisdiction due to physical location alone.This national rule prevents us from interpreting natural-born citizen under common law rules because it eliminates the possibility of a child being born with more than one claim for allegiance.The primary author of the citizenship clause, Sen. Jacob M. Howard, said the “word jurisdiction, as here employed, ought to be construed so as to imply a full and complete jurisdiction on the part of the United States, coextensive in all respects with the constitutional power of the United States, whether exercised by Congress, by the executive, or by the judicial department; that is to say, the same jurisdiction in extent and quality as applies to every citizen of the United States now.United States Attorney General, George Williams, whom was a U.S. Senator aligned with Radical Republicans during the drafting of the Fourteenth Amendment in 1866, ruled in 1873 the word jurisdiction under the Fourteenth Amendment must be understood to mean absolute and complete jurisdiction, such as the United States had over its citizens before the adoption of this amendment.He added,Political and military rights and duties do not pertain to anyone else.
Essentially then, subject to the jurisdiction thereof means the same jurisdiction the United States exercises over its own citizens, i.e., only citizens of the United States come within its operation since citizens of the United States do not owe allegiance to some other nation at the same time they do the United States. This makes arguing the physical presence of being subject to laws silly because being subject to another countries laws while visiting makes no change to an aliens allegiance to their native country.
Natural-Born Citizen Defined
One universal point most all early publicists agreed on was natural-born citizen must mean one who is a citizen by no act of law. If a person owes their citizenship to some act of law (naturalization for example), they cannot be considered a natural-born citizen. This leads us to defining natural-born citizen under the laws of nature - laws the founders recognized and embraced.Under the laws of nature, every child born requires no act of law to establish the fact the child inherits through nature his/her father’s citizenship as well as his name (or even his property) through birth. This law of nature is also recognized by law of nations. Sen. Howard said the citizenship clause under the Fourteenth Amendment was by virtue of natural law and national law.The advantages of Natural Law is competing allegiances between nations are not claimed, or at least with those nations whose custom is to not make citizens of other countries citizens without their consent. Any alternations or conflicts due to a child’s natural citizenship are strictly a creature of local municipal law. In the year 1866, the United States for the first time adopted a local municipal law under Sec. 1992 of U.S. Revised Statutes that read: All persons born in the United States and not subject to any foreign power, excluding Indians not taxed, are declared to be citizens of the United States.Rep. John A. Bingham commenting on Section 1992 said it means every human being born within the jurisdiction of the United States of parents not owing allegiance to any foreign sovereignty is, in the language of your Constitution itself, a natural born citizen. Does the gentleman mean that any person, born within the limits of the Republic, and who has offended against no law, can rightfully be exiled from any State or from any rood of the Republic? Does the gentleman undertake to say that here, in the face of the provision in the Constitution, that persons born within the limits of the Republic, of parents who are not the subjects of any other sovereignty, are native-born citizens, whether they be black or white? There is not a textbook referred to in any court which does not recognise the principle that I assert. (Cong. Globe, 37th, 2nd Sess., 407 (1862))Bingham subscribed to the same view as most everyone in Congress at the time that in order to be born a citizen of the United States one must be born within the allegiance of the Nation. Bingham had explained years earlier that to be born within the allegiance of the United States the parents, or more precisely, the father, must not owe allegiance to some other foreign sovereignty (remember the U.S. abandoned England’s natural allegiance doctrine). This of course, explains why emphasis of not owing allegiance to anyone else was the effect of being subject to the jurisdiction of the United States.It should be noted this allegiance due under England’s common law and American law are of two different species. Under the common law one owed a personal allegiance to the King as an individual upon birth. Under the American system there was no individual ruler to owe a personal allegiance to.The constitutional requirement for the President of the United States to be a natural-born citizen had one purpose according to St. George Tucker: That provision in the constitution which requires that the president shall be a native-born citizen (unless he were a citizen of the United States when the constitution was adopted,) is a happy means of security against foreign influence, which, wherever it is capable of being exerted, is to he dreaded more than the plague. The admission of foreigners into our councils, consequently, cannot be too much guarded against; their total exclusion from a station to which foreign nations have been accustomed to, attach ideas of sovereign power, sacredness of character, and hereditary right, is a measure of the most consummate policy and wisdom. …The title of king, prince, emperor, or czar, without the smallest addition to his powers, would have rendered him a member of the fraternity of crowned heads: their common cause has more than once threatened the desolation of Europe. To have added a member to this sacred family in America, would have invited and perpetuated among us all the evils of Pandora’s Box. Charles Pinckney in 1800 said the presidential eligibility clause was designed to insure … attachment to the country. President Washington warned a passionate attachment of one nation for another, produces a variety of evils, and goes on to say:
Sympathy for the favorite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest, in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter, without adequate inducement or justification. It leads also to concessions to the favorite nation, of privileges denied to others, which is apt doubly to injure the nation making the concessions; by unnecessarily parting with what ought to have been retained; and by exciting jealousy, ill- will, and a disposition to retaliate, in the parties from whom equal privileges are withheld.
And it gives to ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens, (who devote themselves to the favorite nation,) facility to betray or sacrifice the interests of their own country, without odium, sometimes even with popularity; gilding, with the appearance of a virtuous sense of obligation, a commendable deference for public opinion, or a laudable zeal for public good, the base or foolish compliances of ambition, corruption, or infatuation.What better way to insure attachment to the country then to require the President to have inherited his American citizenship through his American father and not through a foreign father. Any child can be born anywhere in the country and removed by their father to be raised in his native country. The risks would be for the child to return in later life to reside in this country bringing with him foreign influences and intrigues, and thus, making such a citizen indistinguishable from a naturalized citizen.
Conclusion
Extending citizenship to non-citizens through birth based solely upon locality is nothing more than mere municipal law that has no extra-territorial effect as proven from the English practice of it. On the other hand, citizenship by descent through the father is natural law and is recognized by all nations (what nation doesn’t recognize citizenship of children born wherever to their own citizens?). Thus, a natural-born citizen is one whose citizenship is recognized by law of nations rather than mere local recognition.Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, James F. Wilson of Iowa, confirmed this in 1866: We must depend on the general law relating to subjects and citizens recognized by all nations for a definition, and that must lead us to the conclusion that every person born in the United States is a natural-born citizen of such States, except that of children born on our soil to temporary sojourners or representatives of foreign Governments.When a child inherits the citizenship of their father they become a natural-born citizen of the nation their father belongs regardless of where they might be born. It should be pointed out that citizenship through descent of the father was recognized by U.S. Naturalization law whereby children became citizens themselves as soon as their father had become a naturalized citizen.In a nation that has abandoned the English tradition of perpetual allegiance to the King upon birth for the principal of expatriation, the requirement of preexisting allegiance of the father can be the only method for a child to be born into the allegiance of the nation, and thus, a natural-born citizen.

This is not an apocalyptic scenario, but we must rid ourselves of the viewpoint that such radical scenarios are far-fetched, Hisdai said in an interview with Arutz 7. The mindset that we are well-defended is a false one.Hisdai, a well-known defense official who conducted numerous investigations of defensive systems and set up a special missions unit in Judea and Samaria, cites in his study sources as divergent as President Shimon Peres and Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz – individuals between whom the political gap is wide. Apparently the defensive gap is not.In a study done in 1998, entitled “When the Palestinian Army Invades the Center of the Country,Steinitz slams the idea of allowing free access to Judea and Samaria for PA troops. Such access would inevitably encourage a regional war, and the 25,000 or so PA troops that might invade the center of the country could be enough to turn tide of the battle against Israel, enabling the enemy to take over large parts of the country.
Hisdai cites another study by Reserve Colonel Moshe Hager, head of the country's pre-army academies, who wrote that Defense Minister Ehud Barak's plan to allow large numbers of PA troops into Judea and Samaria could endanger the existence of the state. In the event of a regional war, Judea and Samaria will remain without supervision, as IDF troops try to repel the invasion. It will be impossible to prevent thousands of terrorists from invading Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria. Such a scenario could lead to a massacre of Jews, a one-on-one fight where Arabs have the advantage, attacking isolated and exposed Jews,Hager wrote.Even Shimon Peres, the architect of Oslo, realizes the folly of allowing large numbers of PA troops into Judea and Samaria. Peres, in two of his books – including 1993's New Middle East – writes that tens of thousands of PA troops in Judea and Samaria would be in a perfect position to invade Israel. In fact, the PA's irregular army,which could be beefed up quickly and easily, would be an invaluable addition to the Arab armies that would fight against Israel.Hisdai's study includes other expert opinions, from a wide range of Israeli security experts, that all say the same thing – Israel , including the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, would be in mortal danger if the PA had the opportunity to spread its troops throughout a PA state that could become a reality just a few months from now. And if such a declaration is made, the PA troops, according to international law, would be within their rights to enter Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria and wreak havoc on the lives of residents.Hisdai's study was prompted by the murders of the Fogel family in Itamar last month. The real lesson of the Fogel murders is that we must think about what the scenario would have been like if this had been an all-out attack, instead of a home invasion and murder by two individuals.
The study's bottom line is that the IDF and the government must be much more serious in how their conception of defense in Judea and Samaria in the wake of the potential political developments. I have been speaking to all sorts of groups, both right and left, in recent weeks,Hisdai says.And interestingly, the moderate left and the right all agree: There is no Palestinian partner, and no one to negotiate with on the two-state solution. PA Carries out Ahmadinejad’s Threat and Wipes Israel Off Map

The Palestinian Authority has carried out Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s threat to wipe Israel off the map and literally has done so by displaying maps of Palestine covering all of Israel at the same time its leaders talk about two states for two people.PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, head of the Fatah movement that controls the PA in Judea and Samaria, has in effect established a one-state solution in Fatah offices and in Palestinian Authority schools and offices.The Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) has documented that professional unions and private PA groups display maps showing a rifle and a quill over Palestine, from the Lebanese border in the north to Eilat in the south and from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River.The maps have been circulated at the same time Abbas campaigns for international recognition of the Palestinian Authority based on the borders of Israel as they existed between 1949 and 1967, during which time Jordan was mandated by the United Nations to rule part of Judea and Samaria but then overtook and occupied the entire region, including large swaths of Jerusalem, after the War of Independence in 1948.
Jordan surrendered the areas in the Six-Day War in 1967, and Egypt and Syria did the same in Gaza and the Golan Heights respectively.The maps declare Abbas’ intentions of making the 1967 borders the temporary outline of a would-be Palestinian Authority country, even though – as PMW noted – U.S. President Barack Obama has criticized such maps as a security threat to Israel, in the same category as the threat from terrorist groups who want to destroy Israel.I will never compromise when it comes to Israel's security, he told the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in 2008. Not when there are still voices that deny the Holocaust. Not when there are terrorist groups and political leaders committed to Israel's destruction. Not when there are maps across the Middle East that don't even acknowledge Israel's existence.
Nevertheless, the PA’s version Palestine, as illustrated on the map with a rifle and quill, was displayed last week at a meeting of the General Union of Palestinian Writers, PMW reported.The Palestinian Authority has embedded in its school system the one-state idea of a Palestine – without Israel – for years. As far back as 2003, school posters have displayed the Palestinian flag over a map erasing Israel.The policy has continued unchanged despite statements by Abbas to President Obama that the PA has ceased anti-Israel incitement. EU and US take first step toward Syria sanctions

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU countries and the US have circulated a draft UN Security Council (UNSC) press statement on Syria, described by diplomats as a first step toward imposing sanctions. The development mirrors last month's build-up to action on Libya.A source in the UNSC told this website that the draft statement contains language: condemning violence, calling for restraint, supporting the UN secretary general in calling for an independent investigation into the killings, mentioning the repeal of the emergency law and adoption of other supposedly pro-reform measures, but obviously saying these must be enacted in deed as well as in word, and noting Syria's wider significance in terms of wider security issues in the region.
The contact added that there is no inevitable move from that [the UNSC statement] toward sanctions, but it is a necessary first step as in the case of Libya - first you had a press statement, then a resolution, then another resolution.The draft statement has been put forward jointly by the EU's four UNSC members - France, Germany, Portugal and the UK. The US has been consulted and is supportive,the source noted.
Russia has said it will respond in the next few hours. The prompt Russian reaction is being seen by the EU as a sign that Moscow backs making a statement in principle but aims to negotiate the wording. China is keeping quiet but is expected to take a joint position with Russia.A UNSC press statement has less force than a resolution but is adopted by the same procedure, giving China and Russia a veto. No formal UN debate has been tabled on Syria, with the discussions taking place through informal channels. The developments in New York come after a sharp change in tone by France earlier on Thursday (26 April) in Rome.Speaking to press after a joint summit with Italy on Tunisian migrants, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said:I would like to remind you that before intervention in the Ivory Coast as in Libya, there was a Security Council resolution and that there is no question of doing this or that until there is a Security Council resolution.He said three times that the situation in Syria has become unacceptable.There is a historic change taking place. And clearly France, as well as Italy, is on the side of the Arab people in their aspiration forn freedom and democracy. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces have reportedly killed some 200 people during various protests across the country since Friday (22 April) bringing the death count since violence began six weeks ago to around 400.Al-Assad has also deployed tanks in the opposition hotspot town of Daraa in southern Syria.Nadim Houry, a Beirut-based analyst for Human Rights Watch, said the situation on Tuesday evening inside Syria sounded relatively calm.But he cautioned that it is becoming increasingly hard to get information from sources inside the country.Daraa is a black hole,he said.Escalation in Syria has the potential to cause instability inside neighbouring Lebanon or to lead to clashes with Israel.

VILONIA, Ark. – A day after a series of powerful storms in Arkansas killed 10 people in flooding and a tornado that twisted a tractor-trailer like a wrung dish rag, residents in several states braced Tuesday for a second straight night of violent weather as forecasters again called for twisters to hammer the region.The National Weather Service issued a high risk warning for severe weather in a stretch extending from northeast of Memphis to just northeast of Dallas and covering a large swath of Arkansas. It last issued such a warning on April 16, when dozens of tornadoes hit North Carolina and killed 21 people. Fourteen tornado warnings had been issued in Arkansas by 6 p.m. Tuesday, although there was no confirmation that any funnel clouds touched the ground.The latest round of storms began as communities in much of the region struggled with flooding and damage from earlier twisters. In Arkansas, a tornado smashed Vilonia, just north of Little Rock, on Monday night, ripping the roof off the grocery store, flattening homes and tossing vehicles into the air.
An early warning may have saved Lisa Watson's life in that case. She packed up her three children and was speeding away from the Black Oak Ranch subdivision in Vilonia when she looked to her left and saw the twister approach. Two of her neighbors died in their mobile homes, and a visiting couple who took shelter in a metal shipping container where the husband stored tools died when the container was blown at least 150 feet into a creek.Jimmy Talley said his brother, David, told his mother that he and his wife, Katherine, were leaving the mobile home they'd been staying in because they thought the container would be safe.He said I love you, Mom,and that's the last that anybody heard from him, Jimmy Talley said.The tornado also reduced the mobile home the couple had been staying in to a pile of boards and belongings. The other victims were Charles Mitchell, 55, and a 63-year-old man whose name has not yet been released.Emergency workers kept non-residents out of the subdivision Tuesday. Pictures Watson took when she returned home showed a collection of demolished mobile homes, including what looked like a pile of insulation that she said had been a trailer.Faulkner County Judge Preston Scroggin said the tornado tore through an area 3 miles wide and 15 miles long, and he thought more people might have died if the residents hadn't been receiving warnings about a possible outbreak of tornadoes since the weekend and the local weather office hadn't issued a warning almost 45 minutes before the twister hit Vilonia.
Pat Fulmer saw the warning on television and took shelter in a safe room. But as the minutes passed, she thought it might be a false alarm. The area had already received warnings for two other rotating storms that didn't result in touchdowns, she said.
It was about to the point that we thought they were crying, Wolf, Fulmer said. Then as the tornado approached about 7:30 p.m., she began receiving calls and text messages telling her it was coming.Vilonia Mayor James Firestone said cleanup and recover work began immediately.We had people lined up with chainsaws at city hall ready to go to work, he said. The county's emergency management director said 70 homes were destroyed at Vilonia, with another 51 sustaining major damage.Jay Arendal, who had moved to the area only weeks before, lost his home but said he planned to rebuild. He had sent his wife and two daughters into a pantry and went into a closet with his two sons just before the house fell apart around them. The only thing left was a concrete foundation and scattered piles of wet belongings.I've got the shirt on my back, Arendal said.We're going to pull the nails out of this lumber and nail this back.In the Quail Hollow subdivision, many homes appeared Tuesday as though they had never had roofs — there were no shingles or other roofing material on the ground. It was just gone.Terina Atkins, a middle school librarian, rode out the storm in with her family in their laundry room. Adkins said at one point, she heard a loud sucking noise and realized the air was being sucked out of the drain in a sink.We clogged up the sink and we could feel our ears popping, Atkins said.Rick Satterwhite, 61, and his wife Debbie, 57, clambered into their concrete storm cellar as warnings sounded. After a few minutes, Rick Satterwhite unlatched the door, thinking the storm might have passed. Instead, he saw the tops of trees swirling, and the storm sucked the air out of the shelter.It was the ungodliest feeling and sound,Debbie Satterwhite said.
10 dead as storms ravage US Midwest

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Severe storms that ripped through the central United States left at least 10 people dead in the state of Arkansas, as authorities Tuesday warned of historic flooding and urged people immediately to move to higher ground.Torrential downpours have drenched a swath of the US midwest in recent weeks, saturating the ground and leaving river levels precariously high, leading the National Weather Service to warn of catastrophic flash flooding.In flash flooding advisories for Missouri, the NWS warned that the rising waters were historic-type flooding that only rarely occurs.Authorities were evacuating 1,000 people along the swollen Black River near the Missouri city of Poplar Bluff, home to some 17,000 people, as a compromised levee had reportedly already failed at four points.Due to the placement of the failure, city deputy police chief Jeff Rolland told CNN the river's flooding was headed for rural but still populated Butler County.Flash flood warnings were issued by the weather service in Arkansas in the wake of severe thunderstorms that flooded roads, fatally sweeping away at least six people in their vehicles, Arkansas Department of Emergency Management spokeswoman Renee Presslar confirmed to AFP.
A deadly tornado, meanwhile, slammed the central town of Vilonia late Monday, claiming the lives of four people, said ADEM spokesman Chad Stover.There are a lot of responders still responding to yesterday's storm, and then preparation is underway for another round of even more severe (storms) than we saw yesterday, appearing later this afternoon, later this evening,Stover said earlier Tuesday.The entire state is at very severe risk for storm,he said.We are urging all of our local citizens to be prepared, to have a plan for their families and where they would go for severe weather.Emergencies were declared by governors in the states of Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky due to the flooding and the expected new round of storms.Governor Pat Quinn in Illinois also activated the state's National Guard to support flood-fighting and life safety missions in southern Illinois, his office said.The NWS in its flash flood warning for three counties in Missouri's southwest said a combination of heavy rainfall over the last five days... along with anticipated rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours has prompted the river to rise to 21.2 feet (6.4 meters).That rise would easily eclipse the river's flood stage of 16.0feet (4.8 meters), said the NWS.In central and south Indiana the NWS issued a flash flood watch amid warnings of more thunderstorms expected through to Wednesday, saying heavy rains on already saturated ground could lead to overflowing rivers later in the week.
The NWS issued a tornado warning for westernmost Kentucky, saying the accompanying thunderstorm could also produce golf ball size hail.Earlier the service had issue an urgent warning for the small Kentucky town of Sulphur where a dam was on the brink of failing: If you live near this river... evacuate to higher ground now! MIAMI (Reuters) – The 2011 Atlantic hurricane season will be active with the energy-rich U.S. Gulf Coast facing a significant threat of a hurricane landfall, a leading private weather forecaster predicted on Tuesday.The forecast by Weather Services International follows one of the busiest seasons on record last year that saw intense levels of storm and hurricane activity but no direct hit on the U.S. coastline.WSI slightly lowered its December forecast, calling for 15 named storms and eight hurricanes. Last year, Hurricane Earl, which grew into a Category 4 hurricane, came the closest by approaching to about 100 miles off North Carolina and southern New England in September.Our recent good fortune in avoiding landfalling hurricanes is not likely to last, Crawford said.
Projection models, he said, showed the western states on the U.S. coast of the Gulf of Mexico, where major oil and gas installations are located, facing sharply increased chances of a landfall this year.Crawford predicted two or three hurricanes could come ashore.The U.S. has not had a three-year stretch without a hurricane landfall since the 1860s, he added.A change in weather conditions is also increasing chances of an hurricane making impact on the U.S. coastline, according to Crawford.

COMMENTARY | Despite the fact President Barack Obama participated in an Easter Egg roll Monday as well as church services Sunday, he has once again come under fire by right wingers, this time over trivial matters regarding the religious holiday: The White House never released a proclamation about Easter, and even conservative TV hacks like Sean Hannity whined about it Monday night with his Great American Panel.
Seeing the president and first lady participate with thousands of children for the annual Easter Egg Roll on the White House South Lawn, progressives, who are cognizant of how much the right wing loathes Obama, must have wondered what grounds they would find to accuse the president over this time. Like how he and Michelle read the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom or the Get Up and Go theme promoting anti-obesity? Given the White House had issued releases on Muslim holidays and Earth Day, conservatives have found yet another Obama conspiracy to gripe about, along with his birth certificate, the issue that current leader in the Republican pre-primary polls Donald Trump has been browbeating for his own ego.A lot of people don't know when certain Muslim holidays take place, as well as Earth Day. So why get on the White House and Obama for letting the public know that the executive branch of government is aware of the holidays of other religions that aren't practiced by the majority of Americans? It's not like Obama or his family are seen regularly attending mosques.
What the Obama bashers fail to realize is that actions speak louder than words. Obama and his family attended services at a Washington Baptist church and continued the Easter tradition with kids Monday. Furthermore, virtually every American knows that Easter weekend took place this past weekend, so why necessarily make a proclamation about it? What, does Michele Bachmann or Sarah Palin need White House reminders about holidays since their awareness about other things is questionable, i.e., the Minnesota congresswoman's lack of U.S. history knowledge and the former Alaska governor needing hand crib notes to get by? Being against a president over his policies is one thing, but being petty over everything Obama says and does reflects the mean-spiritedness of many in the conservative movement.

Enormous statue of powerful pharaoh unearthed

CAIRO – Archaeologists unearthed one of the largest statues found to date of a powerful ancient Egyptian pharaoh at his mortuary temple in the southern city of Luxor, the country's antiquities authority announced Tuesday.The 13 meter (42 foot) tall statue of Amenhotep III was one of a pair that flanked the northern entrance to the grand funerary temple on the west bank of the Nile that is currently the focus of a major excavation.The statue consists of seven large quartzite blocks and still lacks a head and was actually first discovered in the 1928 and then rehidden, according to the press release from the country's antiquities authority. Archaeologists expect to find its twin in the next digging season.Excavation supervisor Abdel-Ghaffar Wagdi said two other statues were also unearthed, one of the god Thoth with a baboon's head and a six foot (1.85 meter) tall one of the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet.
Archaeologists working on the temple over the past few years have issued a flood of announcements about new discoveries of statues. The 3,400-year-old temple is one of the largest on the west bank of the Nile in Luxor, where the powerful pharaohs of Egypt's New Kingdom built their tombs.Amenhotep III, who was the grandfather of the famed boy-pharaoh Tutankhamun, ruled in the 14th century B.C. at the height of Egypt's New Kingdom and presided over a vast empire stretching from Nubia in the south to Syria in the north.The pharaoh's temple was largely destroyed, possibly by floods, and little remains of its walls. Report: Danger Lurks in a PA State

If – as many expect – the United Nations General Assembly votes to recognize a Palestinian state in Judea, Samaria, and Jerusalem at its meeting next September, the IDF and the government will have to take a more aggressive tack to defend Jews living in Judea and Samaria.A study undertaken by IDF Reserve Major Moshe Hisdai examined the defense, military, and legal implications of UN recognition of a PA state – and concluded that the army, government and residents have to be ready in advance. This is not an apocalyptic scenario, but we must rid ourselves of the viewpoint that such radical scenarios are far-fetched, Hisdai said in an interview with Arutz 7. The mindset that we are well-defended is a false one.Hisdai, a well-known defense official who conducted numerous investigations of defensive systems and set up a special missions unit in Judea and Samaria, cites in his study sources as divergent as President Shimon Peres and Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz – individuals between whom the political gap is wide. Apparently the defensive gap is not.In a study done in 1998, entitled “When the Palestinian Army Invades the Center of the Country,Steinitz slams the idea of allowing free access to Judea and Samaria for PA troops. Such access would inevitably encourage a regional war, and the 25,000 or so PA troops that might invade the center of the country could be enough to turn tide of the battle against Israel, enabling the enemy to take over large parts of the country.
Hisdai cites another study by Reserve Colonel Moshe Hager, head of the country's pre-army academies, who wrote that Defense Minister Ehud Barak's plan to allow large numbers of PA troops into Judea and Samaria could endanger the existence of the state. In the event of a regional war, Judea and Samaria will remain without supervision, as IDF troops try to repel the invasion. It will be impossible to prevent thousands of terrorists from invading Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria. Such a scenario could lead to a massacre of Jews, a one-on-one fight where Arabs have the advantage, attacking isolated and exposed Jews,Hager wrote.Even Shimon Peres, the architect of Oslo, realizes the folly of allowing large numbers of PA troops into Judea and Samaria. Peres, in two of his books – including 1993's New Middle East – writes that tens of thousands of PA troops in Judea and Samaria would be in a perfect position to invade Israel. In fact, the PA's irregular army,which could be beefed up quickly and easily, would be an invaluable addition to the Arab armies that would fight against Israel.Hisdai's study includes other expert opinions, from a wide range of Israeli security experts, that all say the same thing – Israel , including the Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, would be in mortal danger if the PA had the opportunity to spread its troops throughout a PA state that could become a reality just a few months from now. And if such a declaration is made, the PA troops, according to international law, would be within their rights to enter Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria and wreak havoc on the lives of residents.Hisdai's study was prompted by the murders of the Fogel family in Itamar last month. The real lesson of the Fogel murders is that we must think about what the scenario would have been like if this had been an all-out attack, instead of a home invasion and murder by two individuals.
The study's bottom line is that the IDF and the government must be much more serious in how their conception of defense in Judea and Samaria in the wake of the potential political developments. I have been speaking to all sorts of groups, both right and left, in recent weeks,Hisdai says.And interestingly, the moderate left and the right all agree: There is no Palestinian partner, and no one to negotiate with on the two-state solution. PA Carries out Ahmadinejad’s Threat and Wipes Israel Off Map

The Palestinian Authority has carried out Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s threat to wipe Israel off the map and literally has done so by displaying maps of Palestine covering all of Israel at the same time its leaders talk about two states for two people.PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, head of the Fatah movement that controls the PA in Judea and Samaria, has in effect established a one-state solution in Fatah offices and in Palestinian Authority schools and offices.The Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) has documented that professional unions and private PA groups display maps showing a rifle and a quill over Palestine, from the Lebanese border in the north to Eilat in the south and from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River.The maps have been circulated at the same time Abbas campaigns for international recognition of the Palestinian Authority based on the borders of Israel as they existed between 1949 and 1967, during which time Jordan was mandated by the United Nations to rule part of Judea and Samaria but then overtook and occupied the entire region, including large swaths of Jerusalem, after the War of Independence in 1948.
Jordan surrendered the areas in the Six-Day War in 1967, and Egypt and Syria did the same in Gaza and the Golan Heights respectively.The maps declare Abbas’ intentions of making the 1967 borders the temporary outline of a would-be Palestinian Authority country, even though – as PMW noted – U.S. President Barack Obama has criticized such maps as a security threat to Israel, in the same category as the threat from terrorist groups who want to destroy Israel.I will never compromise when it comes to Israel's security, he told the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in 2008. Not when there are still voices that deny the Holocaust. Not when there are terrorist groups and political leaders committed to Israel's destruction. Nevertheless, the PA’s version Palestine, as illustrated on the map with a rifle and quill, was displayed last week at a meeting of the General Union of Palestinian Writers, PMW reported.The Palestinian Authority has embedded in its school system the one-state idea of a Palestine – without Israel – for years. As far back as 2003, school posters have displayed the Palestinian flag over a map erasing Israel.The policy has continued unchanged despite statements by Abbas to President Obama that the PA has ceased anti-Israel incitement. EU and US take first step toward Syria sanctions

EUOBSERVER / BRUSSELS - EU countries and the US have circulated a draft UN Security Council (UNSC) press statement on Syria, described by diplomats as a first step toward imposing sanctions. The development mirrors last month's build-up to action on Libya.A source in the UNSC told this website that the draft statement contains language: condemning violence, calling for restraint, supporting the UN secretary general in calling for an independent investigation into the killings, mentioning the repeal of the emergency law and adoption of other supposedly pro-reform measures, but obviously saying these must be enacted in deed as well as in word, and noting Syria's wider significance in terms of wider security issues in the region.
The contact added that there is no inevitable move from that [the UNSC statement] toward sanctions, but it is a necessary first step as in the case of Libya - first you had a press statement, then a resolution, then another resolution.The draft statement has been put forward jointly by the EU's four UNSC members - France, Germany, Portugal and the UK. The US has been consulted and is supportive,the source noted.
Russia has said it will respond in the next few hours. The prompt Russian reaction is being seen by the EU as a sign that Moscow backs making a statement in principle but aims to negotiate the wording. China is keeping quiet but is expected to take a joint position with Russia.A UNSC press statement has less force than a resolution but is adopted by the same procedure, giving China and Russia a veto. No formal UN debate has been tabled on Syria, with the discussions taking place through informal channels. The developments in New York come after a sharp change in tone by France earlier on Thursday (26 April) in Rome.Speaking to press after a joint summit with Italy on Tunisian migrants, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said:I would like to remind you that before intervention in the Ivory Coast as in Libya, there was a Security Council resolution and that there is no question of doing this or that until there is a Security Council resolution.He said three times that the situation in Syria has become unacceptable.There is a historic change taking place. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces have reportedly killed some 200 people during various protests across the country since Friday (22 April) bringing the death count since violence began six weeks ago to around 400.Al-Assad has also deployed tanks in the opposition hotspot town of Daraa in southern Syria.Nadim Houry, a Beirut-based analyst for Human Rights Watch, said the situation on Tuesday evening inside Syria sounded relatively calm.But he cautioned that it is becoming increasingly hard to get information from sources inside the country.Daraa is a black hole,he said.Escalation in Syria has the potential to cause instability inside neighbouring Lebanon or to lead to clashes with Israel.

VILONIA, Ark. – A day after a series of powerful storms in Arkansas killed 10 people in flooding and a tornado that twisted a tractor-trailer like a wrung dish rag, residents in several states braced Tuesday for a second straight night of violent weather as forecasters again called for twisters to hammer the region.The National Weather Service issued a high risk warning for severe weather in a stretch extending from northeast of Memphis to just northeast of Dallas and covering a large swath of Arkansas. It last issued such a warning on April 16, when dozens of tornadoes hit North Carolina and killed 21 people. Fourteen tornado warnings had been issued in Arkansas by 6 p.m. Tuesday, although there was no confirmation that any funnel clouds touched the ground.The latest round of storms began as communities in much of the region struggled with flooding and damage from earlier twisters. In Arkansas, a tornado smashed Vilonia, just north of Little Rock, on Monday night, ripping the roof off the grocery store, flattening homes and tossing vehicles into the air.
An early warning may have saved Lisa Watson's life in that case. She packed up her three children and was speeding away from the Black Oak Ranch subdivision in Vilonia when she looked to her left and saw the twister approach. Two of her neighbors died in their mobile homes, and a visiting couple who took shelter in a metal shipping container where the husband stored tools died when the container was blown at least 150 feet into a creek.Jimmy Talley said his brother, David, told his mother that he and his wife, Katherine, were leaving the mobile home they'd been staying in because they thought the container would be safe.He said I love you, Mom,and that's the last that anybody heard from him, Jimmy Talley said.The tornado also reduced the mobile home the couple had been staying in to a pile of boards and belongings. The other victims were Charles Mitchell, 55, and a 63-year-old man whose name has not yet been released.Emergency workers kept non-residents out of the subdivision Tuesday. Pictures Watson took when she returned home showed a collection of demolished mobile homes, including what looked like a pile of insulation that she said had been a trailer.Faulkner County Judge Preston Scroggin said the tornado tore through an area 3 miles wide and 15 miles long, and he thought more people might have died if the residents hadn't been receiving warnings about a possible outbreak of tornadoes since the weekend and the local weather office hadn't issued a warning almost 45 minutes before the twister hit Vilonia.
Pat Fulmer saw the warning on television and took shelter in a safe room. But as the minutes passed, she thought it might be a false alarm. The area had already received warnings for two other rotating storms that didn't result in touchdowns, she said.
It was about to the point that we thought they were crying, Wolf, Fulmer said. Then as the tornado approached about 7:30 p.m., she began receiving calls and text messages telling her it was coming.Vilonia Mayor James Firestone said cleanup and recover work began immediately.We had people lined up with chainsaws at city hall ready to go to work, he said. The county's emergency management director said 70 homes were destroyed at Vilonia, with another 51 sustaining major damage.Jay Arendal, who had moved to the area only weeks before, lost his home but said he planned to rebuild. He had sent his wife and two daughters into a pantry and went into a closet with his two sons just before the house fell apart around them. The only thing left was a concrete foundation and scattered piles of wet belongings.I've got the shirt on my back, Arendal said.We're going to pull the nails out of this lumber and nail this back.In the Quail Hollow subdivision, many homes appeared Tuesday as though they had never had roofs — there were no shingles or other roofing material on the ground. It was just gone.Terina Atkins, a middle school librarian, rode out the storm in with her family in their laundry room. Adkins said at one point, she heard a loud sucking noise and realized the air was being sucked out of the drain in a sink.We clogged up the sink and we could feel our ears popping, Atkins said.Rick Satterwhite, 61, and his wife Debbie, 57, clambered into their concrete storm cellar as warnings sounded. After a few minutes, Rick Satterwhite unlatched the door, thinking the storm might have passed. Instead, he saw the tops of trees swirling, and the storm sucked the air out of the shelter.It was the ungodliest feeling and sound,Debbie Satterwhite said.
10 dead as storms ravage US Midwest

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Severe storms that ripped through the central United States left at least 10 people dead in the state of Arkansas, as authorities Tuesday warned of historic flooding and urged people immediately to move to higher ground.Torrential downpours have drenched a swath of the US midwest in recent weeks, saturating the ground and leaving river levels precariously high, leading the National Weather Service to warn of catastrophic flash flooding.In flash flooding advisories for Missouri, the NWS warned that the rising waters were historic-type flooding that only rarely occurs.Authorities were evacuating 1,000 people along the swollen Black River near the Missouri city of Poplar Bluff, home to some 17,000 people, as a compromised levee had reportedly already failed at four points.Due to the placement of the failure, city deputy police chief Jeff Rolland told CNN the river's flooding was headed for rural but still populated Butler County.Flash flood warnings were issued by the weather service in Arkansas in the wake of severe thunderstorms that flooded roads, fatally sweeping away at least six people in their vehicles, Arkansas Department of Emergency Management spokeswoman Renee Presslar confirmed to AFP.
A deadly tornado, meanwhile, slammed the central town of Vilonia late Monday, claiming the lives of four people, said ADEM spokesman Chad Stover.There are a lot of responders still responding to yesterday's storm, and then preparation is underway for another round of even more severe (storms) than we saw yesterday, appearing later this afternoon, later this evening,Stover said earlier Tuesday.The entire state is at very severe risk for storm,he said.We are urging all of our local citizens to be prepared, to have a plan for their families and where they would go for severe weather.Emergencies were declared by governors in the states of Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky due to the flooding and the expected new round of storms.Governor Pat Quinn in Illinois also activated the state's National Guard to support flood-fighting and life safety missions in southern Illinois, his office said.The NWS in its flash flood warning for three counties in Missouri's southwest said a combination of heavy rainfall over the last five days... along with anticipated rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours has prompted the river to rise to 21.2 feet (6.4 meters).That rise would easily eclipse the river's flood stage of 16.0feet (4.8 meters), said the NWS.In central and south Indiana the NWS issued a flash flood watch amid warnings of more thunderstorms expected through to Wednesday, saying heavy rains on already saturated ground could lead to overflowing rivers later in the week.
The NWS issued a tornado warning for westernmost Kentucky, saying the accompanying thunderstorm could also produce golf ball size hail.Earlier the service had issue an urgent warning for the small Kentucky town of Sulphur where a dam was on the brink of failing: If you live near this river... evacuate to higher ground now! U.S. may see several hurricane landfalls in 2011: WSI

MIAMI (Reuters) – The 2011 Atlantic hurricane season will be active with the energy-rich U.S. Gulf Coast facing a significant threat of a hurricane landfall, a leading private weather forecaster predicted on Tuesday.The forecast by Weather Services International follows one of the busiest seasons on record last year that saw intense levels of storm and hurricane activity but no direct hit on the U.S. coastline.WSI slightly lowered its December forecast, calling for 15 named storms and eight hurricanes. Four are expected to strengthen into major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher on the five-step Saffir-Simpson intensity scale, it said.While we expect less overall activity this year, we do expect a much more impactful season along the U.S. coastline,WSI's chief meteorologist Todd Crawford said in a statement.
Other private forecasters have made similar predictions for the 2011 season set to begin June 1 and run through November 30.The La Nina phenomenon, which fosters hurricane formation, is weakening faster than expected and prompted WSI to lower its prediction, Crawford said.The 2010 season spawned 19 named storms, tying for the third most active season with 1887 and 1995, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. Twelve storms grew into hurricanes last year, making it the second-highest season tied with the year 1969.
NO LANDFALLS SINCE 2008
The U.S. coastline has been spared a direct hit since 2008. Last year, Hurricane Earl, which grew into a Category 4 hurricane, came the closest by approaching to about 100 miles off North Carolina and southern New England in September.Our recent good fortune in avoiding landfalling hurricanes is not likely to last, Crawford said.
Projection models, he said, showed the western states on the U.S. coast of the Gulf of Mexico, where major oil and gas installations are located, facing sharply increased chances of a landfall this year.Crawford predicted two or three hurricanes could come ashore.The U.S. has not had a three-year stretch without a hurricane landfall since the 1860s, he added.A change in weather conditions is also increasing chances of an hurricane making impact on the U.S. coastline, according to Crawford.

Major forest fire breaks out in Switzerland

GENEVA – Police say almost 300 firefighters and the army are battling strong headwinds and dry conditions to extinguish a huge forest fire in southern Switzerland.Firefighters aided by helicopters struggled to contain the blaze Tuesday night after it broke out at an auto repair shop on the outskirts of Visp and quickly advanced on forestland in the Swiss canton (state) of Valais.The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. Authorities warned residents to remain inside their homes.
Lack of snowfall and an unusually mild spring have contributed to low lake levels and dry tinder in the forests of many areas of Switzerland.Strong winds pushed the flames fast up the nearby mountainsides, blocking the main road to Visp, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from popular ski area Zermatt and the famed Matterhorn.

Seeing the president and first lady participate with thousands of children for the annual Easter Egg Roll on the White House South Lawn, progressives, who are cognizant of how much the right wing loathes Obama, must have wondered what grounds they would find to accuse the president over this time. Like how he and Michelle read the story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom or the Get Up and Go theme promoting anti-obesity? Given the White House had issued releases on Muslim holidays and Earth Day, conservatives have found yet another Obama conspiracy to gripe about, along with his birth certificate, the issue that current leader in the Republican pre-primary polls Donald Trump has been browbeating for his own ego.A lot of people don't know when certain Muslim holidays take place, as well as Earth Day. So why get on the White House and Obama for letting the public know that the executive branch of government is aware of the holidays of other religions that aren't practiced by the majority of Americans? It's not like Obama or his family are seen regularly attending mosques.
What the Obama bashers fail to realize is that actions speak louder than words. Obama and his family attended services at a Washington Baptist church and continued the Easter tradition with kids Monday. Furthermore, virtually every American knows that Easter weekend took place this past weekend, so why necessarily make a proclamation about it? What, does Michele Bachmann or Sarah Palin need White House reminders about holidays since their awareness about other things is questionable, i.e., the Minnesota congresswoman's lack of U.S. history knowledge and the former Alaska governor needing hand crib notes to get by? Being against a president over his policies is one thing, but being petty over everything Obama says and does reflects the mean-spiritedness of many in the conservative movement.
DANIEL 2:31-49
31 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.
32 This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,
33 His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.
34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.
35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.
36 This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king.
37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.

39 And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.
40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.
41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.
42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
43 And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.

COULD THIS BE THE HINT TO THE WORLD THAT THIS STATUE FOUND COULD REPRESENT THE FINAL FEET AND TOES OF THE STATUE-THE EU IS READY TO TAKE ITS POWER IN THESE LAST HOURS OF THE END OF THE AGE OF GRACE.
Enormous statue of powerful pharaoh unearthed

CAIRO – Archaeologists unearthed one of the largest statues found to date of a powerful ancient Egyptian pharaoh at his mortuary temple in the southern city of Luxor, the country's antiquities authority announced Tuesday.The 13 meter (42 foot) tall statue of Amenhotep III was one of a pair that flanked the northern entrance to the grand funerary temple on the west bank of the Nile that is currently the focus of a major excavation.The statue consists of seven large quartzite blocks and still lacks a head and was actually first discovered in the 1928 and then rehidden, according to the press release from the country's antiquities authority. Archaeologists expect to find its twin in the next digging season.Excavation supervisor Abdel-Ghaffar Wagdi said two other statues were also unearthed, one of the god Thoth with a baboon's head and a six foot (1.85 meter) tall one of the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet.
Archaeologists working on the temple over the past few years have issued a flood of announcements about new discoveries of statues. The 3,400-year-old temple is one of the largest on the west bank of the Nile in Luxor, where the powerful pharaohs of Egypt's New Kingdom built their tombs.Amenhotep III, who was the grandfather of the famed boy-pharaoh Tutankhamun, ruled in the 14th century B.C. at the height of Egypt's New Kingdom and presided over a vast empire stretching from Nubia in the south to Syria in the north.The pharaoh's temple was largely destroyed, possibly by floods, and little remains of its walls. It was also devastated by an earthquake in 27 B.C. But archaeologists have been able to unearth a wealth of artifacts and statuary in the buried ruins, including two statues of Amenhotep made of black granite found at the site in March 2009.(This version CORRECTS original date of discovery.)
