Netanyahu, after ‘cancer’ jibe: Israel will defend itself from ‘murderous’ Iran-As Rouhani terms Jewish state a ‘cancerous tumor,’ PM says Tehran’s calls to destroy Israel show world must join in sanctions against Tehran-By TOI staff and Agencies-27 November 2018
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday hit back against President Hassan Rouhani after the Iranian leader called Israel a “cancerous tumor” established by Western countries to advance their interests in the Middle East.“Israel knows very well how to defend itself from the murderous Iranian regime,” said Netanyahu, in a statement.“Rouhani’s slander, which calls for the destruction of Israel, proves yet again why the nations of the world need to join in the sanctions against the Iranian terrorist regime which threatens them,” charged the prime minister.Iran’s leaders frequently condemn Israel and predict its demise, but Rouhani, a relative moderate, rarely employs such rhetoric.Addressing an annual Islamic Unity Conference on Saturday, Rouhani said, “One of the ominous results of World War II was the formation of a cancerous tumor in the region.” He went on to refer to Israel as a “fake regime” set up by Western countries.Iran supports terror groups like Lebanese Hezbollah and Palestinian Hamas that are pledged to Israel’s destruction.Netanyahu has long identified Iran as Israel’s greatest threat, pointing to its nuclear program, calls for Israel’s destruction and support of anti-Israel terrorist groups. The Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, routinely calls Israel a “cancer” of the region that must be removed.Rouhani on Saturday said the United States cultivates close ties with “regional Muslim nations” to protect Israel, an apparent reference to Iran’s regional rival Saudi Arabia and the kingdom’s Sunni Arab allies. He said bowing to American pressure amounts to “treason.”He added, however, that Iran was prepared to defend Saudi Arabia from “terrorism and superpowers.”“We do consider you as a brother,” he said. “We do consider the people of Mecca and Medina our brothers,” he added, referring to Islam’s two holiest cities, in Saudi Arabia.Saudi Arabia cut diplomatic ties with Iran nearly three years ago after Iranian protesters stormed its diplomatic posts in Iran in response to the kingdom’s execution of a prominent Shiite cleric. The two countries support opposite sides in the wars in Syria and Yemen.
EU condemns Israeli demolitions in East Jerusalem’s Shuafat refugee camp-Europe also criticizes decision to build in capital neighborhoods beyond the Green Line, saying such construction undermines two-state solution-By TOI staff-27 November 2018
The European Union on Saturday condemned Israel’s demolition of around 20 commercial structures in the Shuafat refugee camp in East Jerusalem on Wednesday, which took place as part of the city’s new policy of extending the reach of municipal enforcement to neighborhoods beyond the security fence.“The European Union is strongly opposed to Israel’s settlement policy, illegal under international law, and actions taken in that context, such as forced transfers, evictions and demolitions,” read a statement issued by the Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy at the EU. “The EU expects the Israeli authorities to reconsider and reverse these decisions.”The statement also condemned Israel’s plans to build housing units in the East Jerusalem neighborhoods of Ramat Shlomo and Ramot.“The policy of settlement construction and expansion in East Jerusalem continues to undermine the possibility of a viable two-state solution, with Jerusalem as the future capital of both states, which is the only realistic way to achieve a just and lasting peace,” the statement concluded. The Jerusalem Planning and Building Committee at the beginning of the month approved 90 units in the Gilo neighborhood and 150 in the Ramat Shlomo neighborhood. On Wednesday, the Jerusalem municipality demolished 18 storefronts and three gas stations on the main commercial street of the Shuafat refugee camp in East Jerusalem.Israeli authorities entered the camp with excavators to destroy the structures as police formed a security perimeter, an AFP journalist reported. The stores, all built without permits in a part of the city that has seen rampant neglect and almost no enforcement by municipal authorities for decades, were given demolition warnings only 12 hours earlier.During the demolition, police sealed off the street and shut down all movement in the area, effectively sealing residents in the neighborhood, rights groups charged.Police said the demolitions were carried out due to complaints from residents of the refugee camp. It said the action targeted “stores that were built illegally in the center of the camp and created unbearable traffic congestion and crowding.”“The municipality will continue to carry out activities with the support of the police against illegal business in the different areas,” the police statement said.Ahmad Abu Holy, head of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s refugee department, condemned the demolitions to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA, saying they carried out were “under the illegal pretext of building without a permit.”Khader Dibs, an official from the camp, which is surrounded by Israel’s separation wall and is the only refugee camp within Jerusalem, also condemned the demolitions and said the shops had been built in 2007.The move was the most significant act of demolition in the area since the construction of the security fence over a decade ago.Last month, outgoing mayor Nir Barkat announced he would expand enforcement of city ordinances to Shuafat and other Arab neighborhoods beyond the security fence, as well as begin to massively upgrade access to city services such as garbage collection in those areas.Last May, the Jerusalem Police opened the first-ever police station in the Shuafat refugee camp in a ceremony attended by Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan, Police Commissioner Roni Alsheich, and Barkat.Despite Israel’s official annexation of the city’s neighborhoods over the Green Line, a move not recognized by the international community, East Jerusalem’s Arab neighborhoods suffer from neglect and poor infrastructure. Palestinian residents refuse to vote in Jerusalem’s municipal elections so as not to de facto recognize Israeli annexation of areas they hope to see as the future capital of a Palestinian state.Deputy Commissioner Yoram Halevy, who commands the Jerusalem Police, has led a major restructuring and expansion of the force in the city’s eastern half over the past two years.AFP contributed to this report.
Trump takes bid to restrict transgender troops to Supreme Court-[Reuters]-By Andrew Chung-YAHOONEWS-November 27, 2018
NEW YORK (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's administration on Friday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review lower court rulings blocking a policy barring certain transgender people from military service, declining to wait for decisions from federal appeals courts currently considering the issue.Trump announced in March that he would endorse a plan by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to restrict the military service of transgender people who experience a condition called gender dysphoria. The policy replaced an outright ban on transgender service members that Trump announced last year on Twitter, citing concern over military focus and medical costs. But judges in federal courts in Washington state, California, and Washington, D.C., refused to lift injunctions that they had issued against Trump's original ban to allow the updated policy to be enforced. The judges said the new policy was essentially the same as the original ban, or was merely a plan to implement the original ban, which they had ruled would likely run afoul of the U.S. Constitution's guarantee of equal protection under the law.The government's appeals of those rulings had been moving forward. The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard oral arguments in one case it is handling in October. But by seeking high court review before the appeals courts have ruled, which has been a hallmark of the administration's litigation strategy, the government said it wanted to ensure that the Supreme Court would be able to review the dispute before its term ends in June 2019.The American Psychiatric Association defines gender dysphoria as a "clinically significant distress" due to a conflict between a person's gender identity and their sex assigned at birth. Not all transgender people suffer from gender dysphoria, according to the association, which opposes the military ban.Current and aspiring military service members sued in courts around the United States after Trump announced his ban, which reversed Democratic former President Barack Obama's policy of allowing transgender troops to serve openly and receive medical care to transition genders. In the court filing requesting the Supreme Court's review, the Justice Department said Mattis and other military leaders determined that the Obama policy "posed too great a risk to military effectiveness and lethality.""This is simply one more attempt by a reckless Trump administration to push through a discriminatory policy," said Jennifer Levi, director of the transgender rights project for the antidiscrimination group GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders, who represents some of the plaintiffs.(Reporting by Andrew Chung; editing by Jonathan Oatis)
Taiwan rebukes ruling party, emboldens China-friendly opposition-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Yimou Lee and Ben Blanchard-November 27, 2018
TAIPEI (Reuters) - Voters in Taiwan have delivered a strong rebuke to the island's pro-independence ruling party in local elections, emboldening the China-friendly opposition, one of whose main figures says he will now reach out to Beijing to forge more friendly ties. The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) suffered major elections loss on Saturday, losing two key mayoral races, while the opposition Kuomintang took or retained control of 15 cities and counties, leaving the DPP with only six. With little more than a year before presidential elections, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, who has had tense relations with Beijing since her election in 2016, on Saturday took responsibility for her party's losses and resigned as DPP chairwoman. The Kuomintang mayor-elect of the southern port city of Kaohsiung, formerly a DPP stronghold, moved swiftly on Saturday night to reach out to China, telling local media he will set up a working group on China relations and will break down barriers."We have no walls around our hearts," said Han Kuo-yu, who has previously described Taiwan independence as being "more scary" than syphilis. The Kuomintang has sent delegations to China since Tsai took office, where they have been warmly received. China has refused to have direct contacts with Tsai's administration.China, which claims Taiwan as a wayward province, said the elections showed people wanted peaceful relations with Beijing."The results reflected the strong will of the Taiwan public in hoping to continue to share the benefits of the peaceful development of relations across the Taiwan Strait, and their strong wish in hoping to improve the island's economy and people's wellbeing," said a statement by China's policy-making Taiwan Affairs Office and carried by state media.Voters also rejected a referendum that would have seen the island join the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as Taiwan, rather than "Chinese Taipei", a move which would have angered Beijing.China's Taiwan Affairs Office said it showed voters "putting Taiwanese athletes' interests at stake is against people's will". "The attempts of 'Taiwan independence' are doomed to fail," it added. The WeChat account of the overseas edition of the Communist Party's official People's Daily said Han had realized one important reality: "Taiwan will only be good if relations across the Taiwan Strait are good".China is suspicious that Tsai wants formal independence, a red line for Beijing which regards Taiwan as its own.Tsai says she wants only the status quo with China, but will defend Taiwan's security. Chinese law mandates the use of force to prevent the island from seceding.Tensions across the Taiwan Strait have heightened with China conducting military drills around the island and snatching away Taiwan's dwindling number of diplomatic allies.DPP Secretary General Hung Yao-fu, asked on Saturday about whether the China factor had played a role in influencing the elections, reiterated there had been a problem with "fake news"."I think this time was a deep lesson, in terms of fake news messing up with a lot of people's judgment or not getting clear information," he told reporters."This is a global problem not just Taiwan's unique problem."-SPECIAL MARRIAGE EQUALITY LAW-Taiwanese voters on Saturday also rejected a referendum on legalizing same-sex marriage, another blow for Tsai, who in her 2016 campaign promised marriage equality. However, she has made little progress on the issue. In an Asian first, Taiwan's constitutional court declared in May of last year that same-sex couples had the right to legally marry, and set a two-year deadline for legalization. But voters instead backed a referendum that defines marriage as between a man and a woman."This is a victory for all the people who support family values and education for the next generation," the Coalition for the Happiness of Our Next Generation, a group opposed to same-sex marriage, said in a statement.Taiwan cabinet spokeswoman Kolas Yotaka told Reuters a special law will be drafted for marriage equality, and that the government continued to support the issue.Rights activists called a special law for same-sex marriage "discriminatory" and that the referendum was illegal and against the constitution.Dozens of supporters for marriage equality gathered in the capital Taipei early on Sunday, with some weeping as the result became clear. Chi Chia-wei, a veteran gay rights activist, said he remained positive about the fight for equality."The ones opposing us are getting fewer and fewer," he told Reuters.Taiwan's capital Taipei celebrates an annual gay pride parade that showcases the vibrancy of its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. The one-week celebration in October, largest in Asia, contributes more than $3.3 million to the economy, according to Taipei Times.(Reporting by Ben Blanchard and Yimou Lee; Additional reporting by Jess Macy Yu, and David Stanway in Shanghai; Editing by Michael Perry)
Thousands protest in 'feminist tidal wave' against sexist violence-[AFP]-YAHOONEWS-Pierre DONADIEU and Aurélie CARABIN, with AFP bureaux-November 25, 2018
Paris (AFP) - Tens of thousands of people rallied across Europe on Saturday against sexist violence, with more than 30,000 turning out in Paris.Demonstrations across France drew around 50,000 people in all, according to organiser Caroline de Haas, to answer a citizen collective's call for a "feminist tidal wave" of outrage against gender violence brought into sharp focus by the #MeToo movement.Elsewhere, a thousand people braved driving rain in Rome while similar protests drew several hundred demonstrators in Geneva and Athens on the eve of the UN's International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on Sunday. In Spain's capital Madrid, several hundred people took to the streets to march to loud drumming as some shouted "We are all here, the murderers are missing".Authorities put the Paris turnout at 12,000 and similar marches in Lyon, Marseille and Rennes at between 1,000 and 2,400, but De Haas felt moved to salute "the largest (feminist) mobilisation France has known", far bigger than a rally that drew some 2,000 last year.French President Emmanuel Macron offered his support, tweeting: "The fight against violence against women is progressing daily but our society has a long way to go -- everyone must act and fight as this is everybody's business."Participants clad in purple, the colour of the #NousToutes women's activist protest movement, shouted slogans including "sick of rape", "end impunity for aggressors" and "a woman is never responsible for the violence she suffers", while also demanding sufficient government resources to tackle the issue."I am here to support all the victims and continue this struggle which started long before I came along," said French actress Muriel Robin, who had organised a similar rally last month in the capital.- Rise in violence cases -The rallies drew a number of men, including Tanguy, a 19-year-old student who turned out in the western city of Rennes to declare backing for "a movement which is not based on sex -- it's not a fight pitting men against women but a fight by men and women, together, against inequality."The #NousToutes movement started out in France in September, inspired by the #MeToo campaign that began last year since when the number of cases of sexual violence reported to police in France has risen 23 percent.Latest French government figures say 2017 saw 225,000 cases of domestic violence against women by their partners while 2016 saw 123 deaths.Further marches are planned for Sunday in a number of cities across Europe to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.Macron last year made sexual equality a priority of his presidency. But "if the money is not forthcoming public policy won't follow on", warned De Haas, speaking two days after several civil organisations called for a huge increase in public resources dedicated to the problem.French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced on Saturday that an online platform for reporting sexual violence and sexism will be launched on Tuesday."This is the first milestone, technical and political, to eradicate" violence, said he said in a Facebook post."From now, a few clicks can help everyone make a new start: for themselves, for their family. And perhaps avoid the worst."burs-pid/je/qan
EU leaders to sign off historic Brexit deal-[AFP]-yahoonews-Alice Ritchie and Dave Clark-November 27, 2018
Brussels (AFP) - European Union leaders meet Sunday to approve a historic Brexit deal, which British Prime Minister Theresa May said would deliver her country a "brighter future".At a special summit in Brussels that was almost derailed by a row over Gibraltar, the other 27 leaders will gather to sign off the agreement before May joins them to mark the milestone.Forged during 17 months of tough negotiations, the deal covers financial matters, citizens' rights, Northern Ireland and a transition phase, and sets out hopes for future security and trade ties. But it is not the final stage, as the House of Commons in London must still approve the deal before Brexit day on March 29, 2019 -- and many MPs have warned they will not back it.Until the agreement is approved, all sides are still planning for the potentially disastrous possibility that Britain ends its four-decade EU membership with no new arrangements in place.- 'Reduce risks and losses' -EU Council President Donald Tusk, who has always said he would prefer Britain not to leave, said on the eve of the summit that "no-one will have reasons to be happy" when Brexit happens. But he said terms had been agreed that would "reduce the risks and losses", and recommended that EU leaders sign off on the deal.Eurosceptics in May's Conservative party and their Northern Irish allies warn they will not support the agreement when MPs vote as expected next month. But in an open "letter to the nation" on Sunday, May said it delivered on the 2016 referendum vote to leave, and was a "deal for a brighter future".Britain remains deeply divided over the decision, but the prime minister said that finally leaving could be "a moment of renewal and reconciliation"."To do that we need to get on with Brexit now by getting behind this deal," she said.- Gibraltar tensions -May arrived on the eve of the summit for final talks with Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, after which Tusk's spokesman tweeted: "We are on track for tomorrow."But nothing in the negotiations has gone smoothly and the summit risked being derailed by a late objection to the deal by Spain over the British territory of Gibraltar.Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez threatened to reject it unless his country kept a veto over future changes to EU ties with "The Rock", which borders Spain and which it has long claimed. The impasse was resolved when Britain promised to continue bilateral talks with Madrid after Brexit -- although that itself caused further tensions.Sanchez claimed that discussions would cover the "co-sovereignty" of Gibraltar, something residents overwhelmingly rejected in a 2002 referendum.May was quick to correct her Spanish counterpart, saying: "The UK's position on the sovereignty of Gibraltar has not changed and will not change."In legal terms, Spain's disapproval would not have halted the divorce settlement.- Fishing rights -But it would have been an embarrassing split for EU leaders who have proved remarkably united in the painful negotiation.British MPs are most concerned about an arrangement in the withdrawal agreement to keep open the border between British Northern Ireland and Ireland, which could see the province follow EU rules for years. But there are also concerns in EU capitals about fishing rights and commercial rules Britain must follow to maintain access to the bloc's markets.A diplomatic source said the minutes of Sunday's summit meeting of the 27 leaders would record those concerns, although it was not clear if they would be made public.

US climate change report warns weather getting more catastrophic-White House document quietly released while Americans busy with Thanksgiving weekend contradicts Trump on global warming’s effect on worsening natural disasters and economy-By Seth Borenstein-TOI-NOV 27,18
WASHINGTON (AP) — As California’s catastrophic wildfires recede and people rebuild after two hurricanes, a massive new federal report warns that these types of disasters are worsening in the United States because of global warming. The White House report quietly issued Friday also frequently contradicts President Donald Trump. The National Climate Assessment was written long before the deadly fires in California this month and before Hurricanes Florence and Michael raked the East Coast and Florida. It says warming-charged extremes “have already become more frequent, intense, widespread or of long duration.” The report notes the last few years have smashed US records for damaging weather, costing nearly $400 billion since 2015.The recent Northern California wildfires can be attributed to climate change, but there was less of a connection to those in Southern California, said co-author William Hohenstein of the US Department of Agriculture.“A warm, dry climate has increased the areas burned over the last 20 years,” he said at a press conference Friday. The report is mandated by law every few years and is based on more than 1,000 previous research studies. It details how global warming from the burning of coal, oil and gas is hurting each region of the United States and how it impacts different sectors of the economy, including energy and agriculture.“Climate change is transforming where and how we live and presents growing challenges to human health and quality of life, the economy, and the natural systems that support us,” the report says. That includes worsening air pollution causing heart and lung problems, more diseases from insects, the potential for a jump in deaths during heat waves, and nastier allergies.“Annual losses in some economic sectors are projected to reach hundreds of billions of dollars by the end of the century — more than the current gross domestic product (GDP) of many U.S. states,” the report says. It’ll be especially costly on the nation’s coasts because of rising seas and severe storm surges, which will lower property values. And in some areas, such as parts of Alaska and Louisiana, coastal flooding will likely force people to relocate.“We are seeing the things we said would be happening, happen now in real life,” said another co-author Katharine Hayhoe of Texas Tech University. “As a climate scientist it is almost surreal.”And Donald Wuebbles, a co-author from University of Illinois climate scientist, said, “We’re going to continue to see severe weather events get stronger and more intense.”What makes the report different from others is that it focuses on the United States, then goes more local and granular.“All climate change is local,” said Pennsylvania State University climate scientist Richard Alley, who wasn’t part of the report but praised it.While scientists talk of average global temperatures, people feel extremes more, he said.“We live in our drought, our floods and our heat waves. That means we have to focus on us,” he said. The Lower 48 states have warmed 1.8 degrees (1 degree Celsius) since 1900 with 1.2 degrees in the last few decades, according to the report. By the end of the century, the US will be 3 to 12 degrees (1.6 to 6.6 degrees Celsius) hotter depending on how much greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere, the report warns.Outside scientists and officials from 13 federal agencies wrote the report, which was released on the afternoon following Thanksgiving. It was originally scheduled for December. The report often clashes with the president’s past statements and tweets on the legitimacy of climate change science, how much of it is caused by humans, how cyclical it is and what’s causing increases in recent wildfires.Trump tweeted this week about the cold weather hitting the East including: “Brutal and Extended Cold Blast could shatter ALL RECORDS – Whatever happened to Global Warming?”Friday’s report seemed to anticipate such comments, saying: “Over shorter timescales and smaller geographic regions, the influence of natural variability can be larger than the influence of human activity … Over climate timescales of multiple decades, however, global temperature continues to steadily increase.”-‘Transparent attempt to bury report’-Releasing the report on Black Friday “is a transparent attempt by the Trump Administration to bury this report and continue the campaign of not only denying but suppressing the best of climate science,” said study co-author Andrew Light, an international policy expert at the World Resources Institute.During a press conference Friday, officials behind the report repeatedly declined to answer questions about the timing of its release and why it contradicts public statements from Trump. Report director David Reidmiller said questions about the timing were “relevant,” but said what was in the report was more important.Trump, administration officials and elected Republicans frequently say they can’t tell how much of climate change is caused by humans and how much is natural.Citing numerous studies, the report says more than 90 percent of the current warming is caused by humans. Without greenhouse gases, natural forces — such as changes in energy from the sun — would be slightly cooling Earth.“There are no credible alternative human or natural explanations supported by the observational evidence,” the report says.

Conservative MP urges feds to respond to 'non-state torture' in Canada-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-November 27, 2018
OTTAWA — The Canadian government has to answer to the findings of two nurses who told a United Nations committee this week that women and girls in Canada are facing abuse so extreme it amounts to torture, Conservative MP Arnold Viersen says.Linda MacDonald and Jeanne Sarson, nurses and human-rights advocates from Nova Scotia, appeared before the United Nations Committee Against Torture in Geneva earlier this week in hopes of pressuring Canada to amend the Criminal Code to include "non-state torture" as a distinct crime."What they're seeing demands a response from the government," said Viersen.MacDonald said she read the committee an account from a woman who reported having been trafficked by her parents to friends and strangers from the time she was a child. "On the boat he would get the shock things out (electric shocking), throw you down … hits you, make all kinds of bruises with tools like whips, chains, knives, and guns (physical torture). He blindfolds you so you don't know what he's doing (psychological torture). He sticks a broken bottle in your ribs and sucks the blood. He says 'smile'," the woman's story said. The abuse they're talking about is protracted and often perpetrated by victims' relatives, friends of family members, human traffickers, and johns who want very violent sex. MacDonald said that because non-state torture is not identified as a separate crime, there is no data to show how widespread the problem is.Some cases have been heard in court: an Ottawa public servant who died after her husband poured boiling water over her after months of physical and emotional abuse; a teenage boy shackled and starved in a basement by his father; a woman trafficked for the sex trade in Winnipeg, locked in a freezer repeatedly until she passed out.Felice Gaer, an independent expert member of the UN committee and an American human-rights activist, told Canadian officials appearing in Geneva that the committee had heard "rather gripping information" from MacDonald and Sarson about the forms of abuse that children have endured and questioned whether anyone is responsible for collecting formal data.Viersen, an Alberta MP, said he supports the nurses' work and that what they have witnessed among victims is the result of a "lack of value in humanity."The federal government's position is that expanding the Criminal Code to include "non-state torture" would conflict with Canada’s obligations under international laws that specify that torture is a crime carried out by a government.Viersen said the argument has merit, but he's not convinced that MacDonald and Sarson are dogmatic about exactly how the law changes."As long as we can get the idea of what they're trying to grapple with — that there is something that goes beyond assault that is torture," he said.Viersen has been pushing for legislation to control violent pornography and advocates say the issues are related: perpetrators of extreme long-term abuse are often consumers of violent porn.Viersen said if the government is opposed to expanding the Criminal Code to include "non-state torture," it should consider an alternative word that would capture what women say they experience."I like the word 'torture' in the fact that it elicits a response — we all know what that means. Every time you get the lawyers involved they'll tell you that a particular word that you think means one thing actually means something else," he said. "But I applaud these ladies and I would like to see the government have a response to them."Celia Canon, a spokeswoman for Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould, said her office had nothing to say following the nurses' testimony.Earlier this week Canon said creating the offence of private torture could "seriously weaken" Canada’s contribution to the international effort to prevent torture under the Convention against Torture, because it could confuse the existing definition of torture as an act carried out by someone working for a government. She also said the Criminal Code already contains numerous crimes of assault, including sexual assault."In other words, the Criminal Code already contains crimes that capture the kind of conduct associated with private torture, most notably the crimes of aggravated assault and aggravated sexual assault, while existing sentencing provisions already provide a range of aggravating factors that could apply in a case of private torture," Canon said.Janice Dickson, The Canadian Press.
Senior Saudi prince says CIA cannot be trusted on Khashoggi conclusion-[Reuters]-By Katie Paul-YAHOONEWS-November 27, 2018
ABU DHABI (Reuters) - A senior Saudi prince cast doubt upon the reported CIA finding that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul last month, saying the agency could not be counted on to reach a credible conclusion."The CIA is not necessarily the highest standard of veracity or accuracy in assessing situations. The examples of that are multitude," Prince Turki al-Faisal, a senior member of the royal family, told journalists in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. The prince, a former Saudi intelligence chief who has also served as ambassador to the United States, said the agency's conclusion that Iraq possessed chemical weapons before the U.S. invasion in 2003 showed it could be unreliable."That was the most glaring of inaccurate and wrong assessments, which led to a full-scale war with thousands being killed," he said, speaking at an event hosted by the New York-based Beirut Institute."I don't see why the CIA is not on trial in the United States. This is my answer to their assessment of who is guilty and who is not and who did what in the consulate in Istanbul."The CIA has concluded that Prince Mohammed ordered the operation to kill Khashoggi, as first reported by the Washington Post, and briefed other parts of the U.S. government on its findings, sources told Reuters last week.U.S. President Donald Trump has disputed that the agency reached a conclusion on the murder, saying instead "they have feelings certain ways."A Turkish newspaper also reported on Thursday that CIA director Gina Haspel signaled to Turkish officials that the agency had a recording of a call in which the crown prince gave instructions to "silence" the journalist.Khashoggi was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2 in an operation that Turkish authorities have said was ordered by the highest level of Saudi leadership, prompting the kingdom's biggest political crisis in a generation. After offering numerous contradictory explanations, Riyadh said Khashoggi was killed and his body dismembered after negotiations to persuade him to return to Saudi Arabia failed. The kingdom's public prosecutor is seeking the death penalty for five suspects charged in the murder, but has said Prince Mohammed had no prior knowledge of the operation.(Reporting by Katie Paul; Editing by Keith Weir)
