KUALA LUMPUR: The shipment of Li-ion batteries transported from Penang to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) did not undergo additional security screening before being loaded as cargo onto MH370.According to the factual information released by the Malaysian ICAO Annex 13 Safety Investigation for MH370, the batteries from Motorola Solutions Penang were "not regulated as dangerous goods because the packing adhered to the guidelines as per Lithium Battery Guidance Document"."The shipment did not go through security screening in Penang but was inspected physically by MASKargo personnel and went through Customs inspection and clearance before the truck was sealed and allowed to leave the Penang Cargo Complex," the information said.The factual information was released together with the interim statement of the investigation.According to the information, the batteries which were assembled on March 7, 2014 were transported to KLIA by MASKargo truck and arrived at the KLIA Cargo Complex on the evening of March 7, 2014.There were two different models of Li-ion battery consignment on MH370 on March 8, 2014, namely the PMNN4073AR Li-ion batteries rated at 7.4V, 11.8Wh and PMNN4081BRC Li-ion batteries rated at 7.4V, 11.1Wh.Of the total consignment of 2,453 kg, only 221 kg were Li-ion batteries, while the rest were chargers and radio accessories.It was noted that there were 99 shipments of lithium-ion batteries on MAS flights to Beijing from January to May 2014.There was also a special load of 4,566 kg of mangosteen carried on board MH370, which originated from Muar in Johor and Sumatra in Indonesia.According to the factual information, the mangosteens were packed in plastic baskets of eight to nine kg per basket before being loaded on to the trucks which proceeded to the MAS Cargo Complex at KLIA.The baskets were loaded into four Unit Load Device (ULD) containers that were then inspected by the Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (FAMA) of Malaysia."After obtaining the clearance, the forwarding agent handed over the consignments to the MAS loaders to load them into the aircraft," it said.It also stated that there were a total of 85 shipments of mangosteen to Beijing, China from January to May 2014.

From the time it made an air turn back, it can still fly for another 5,400 kilometres," Ahmad Maulan said, adding that it could have glided for another hour without fuel before it ended in the Indian Ocean.On another matter, he said that underwater locator beacon (ULB) battery of the solid state flight data recoder (SSFDR), which was reported expired 14 months before the accident, had no major impact on the recording as SSFDR was operated by aircraft power."The only unfortunate thing when the battery expired was that it would not be able to emit beacon when the plane crashed," he said.However, he noted that the fact how the expired battery was not changed and that it had been overlooked by aircraft safety auditing report was rather questionable.

Yazdi's election will cause further concerns in both Israel and among western states over the direction Tehran is taking. A new petition sent to the White House is calling to file charges of treason against 47 senators who wrote a letter to Iran’s leadership, warning that any nuclear deal they sign with President Barack Obama will be void once he leaves office.“On March 9th, 2015, forty-seven United States Senators committed a treasonous offense when they decided to violate the Logan Act, a 1799 law which forbids unauthorized citizens from negotiating with foreign governments. Violation of the Logan Act is a felony, punishable under federal law with imprisonment of up to three years,” says the petition which can be found on the White House website.“At a time when the United States government is attempting to reach a potential nuclear agreement with the Iranian government, 47 Senators saw fit to instead issue a condescending letter to the Iranian government stating that any agreement brokered by our President would not be upheld once the president leaves office,” it adds.“This is a clear violation of federal law. In attempting to undermine our own nation, these 47 senators have committed treason.”So far the petition has garnered more than 168,000 signatures and has thus surpassed the stated goal of 100,000.The letter, written by freshman Senator Tom Cotton and signed by the Senate's entire Republican leadership as well as potential 2016 presidential contenders Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, has been criticized by Democrats as well as by Iran itself.Obama denounced the letter on Monday, saying, "I think it's somewhat ironic to see some members for Congress wanting to make common cause with the hard-liners in Iran. Iran is considering two new laws that would strongly discriminate against women without children – in an attempt to increase population growth.One law is named the "Bill to Increase Fertility Rates and Prevent Population Decline (Bill 446)." It would outlaw voluntary sterilization and block access to information about contraception.The second law is the "Comprehensive Population and Exaltation of Family Bill (Bill 315)," due to be discussed in parliament next month. If passed, all private and public entities would be forced to give priority, when hiring for certain jobs, to the following, in this order: Men with children, married men without children, and then married women with children; women without children would, presumably, receive what's left.The bill would also make divorce more difficult and discourage police and judicial intervention in family disputes.Iranian authorities "are promoting a dangerous culture in which women are stripped of key rights and viewed as baby-making machines," says Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International.The first bill, which has already passed in Parliament and is undergoing final revisions, would outlaw a common method of modern contraception in Iran, and would deny women the opportunity to make informed decisions about having children by blocking access to contraception information. Amnesty International fears that, together with the elimination in 2012 of state funding for Iran’s family planning program, more women will seek illegal and unsafe abortions.The second bill is viewed as having "devastating consequences for women trapped in abusive relationships,” Sahraoui said. It would actually incentivize judges to rule against divorce by offering them bonuses based on how many of their cases result in marital reconciliation. Women in Iran who wish to divorce already need to prove they are facing “unbearable hardship”, while men can divorce without giving any reason.Amnesty International notes that sexual violence and discrimination against women in Iran is rife. Iran’s Penal Code forbids women and girls as early as nine years old to walk outside without a headscarf or comply with compulsory dress codes. A woman forfeits spousal maintenance if she refuses to comply with the “duties of marriage”, such as leaving the house without permission. Reparations paid for killing or injuring a woman are half those payable for the same harm to a man, and the age of criminal responsibility for girls is just under nine years old but just under 15 years for a boy.

KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia flight QZ8501 search and recovery operations is likely extended between one and two weeks, said Indonesia search and rescue agency (BASARNAS) chief, Bambang Soelistyo.Indonesia news portal, ANTARA News stated that he will meet with the next-of-kins of the ill-fated flight before the search mission officially ends.The date of the salvage operation will be determined after a meeting with the next--of-kins on Tuesday.The report also stated that the meeting will entail the development on the search and rescue mission.To date, said Soelistyo, 59 bodies have not been retrieved since the Airbus 320-200 crashed into the Java Sea on Dec 28, last year.On Jan 7, which was the 11th day of the search, the search entered a new phase when the tail was found and BASARNAS' focus switched to finding the black box – though the search for bodies continued, Soelistyo added.Soelistyo and President Joko Widodo will meet next week to discuss matters pertaining to the tail end of the search and recovery mission.Meanwhile, AFP reported Saturday the mangled wreckage, the largest part of the plane retrieved, was pulled from the sea Friday and loaded onto a ship, with a wing still intact.

SINGAPORE -- What happened to the Malaysia Airlines jetliner that vanished a year ago while flying over the South China Sea? No one knows.The Boeing 777, with 239 passengers and crew aboard, last made voice contact with air traffic control at 1:19 a.m., March 8, 2014, while over the South China Sea. That was less than an hour after takeoff. The plane, on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, then changed course. Malaysian military radar tracked it as it crossed the Malay Peninsula over the Andaman Sea.MH370 was eventually piloted out of the Malaysian military's radar range. Where it ended up remains one of aviation's biggest mysteries.A search is ongoing. But Tony Abbott, prime minister of Australia, which is leading the effort at the behest of Malaysia, recently cautioned that the operation could be scaled down. On March 5, he told parliament he could not promise that the search "will go on at this intensity forever."The Malaysian government has concluded that all passengers and crew are dead. But no bodies, nor even a trace of debris, has ever been spotted.Malaysian Airlines, which nearly went bankrupt, was also rocked in July, when another of its jetliners, flight MH17, with 298 people aboard, was apparently shot down over strife-torn Ukraine. It was on its way from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.The lost and downed flights came as Malaysia Airlines had already been suffering from an onslaught of budget airline competition.The airline's owner, a Malaysian sovereign wealth fund, has appointed Christopher Mueller as the carrier's first foreign CEO. Mueller began the massive restructuring job March 1.Part of the turnaround will almost certainly entail massive job cuts. But to get them, Mueller will have to battle a powerful labor union.It is not the German's first turnaround job. He most recently straightened out Ireland's Aer Lingus. Before that, he got Belgium's state-owned Sabena back up and flying.His first task in his new job has been to review Malaysia Airlines' outsourcing contracts.The carrier has already renegotiated its contract with Brahim's Airline Catering, which supplies in-flight meals. At the end of February, the caterer agreed to cut Malaysia Airlines' monthly bills by 25%.Brahim's is managed by relatives of former Prime Minister Abdul Razak Hussein; the airline had long been criticized for paying too much for the food it served.In another important move, the airline has decided to prune unprofitable routes. Khazanah Nasional, the airline's owner, has said the carrier will reduce its passenger transport capacity by more than 10% by the end of this year. Under review are flights to Europe and the Middle East.The decision represents a major policy change for an airline that has kept flying unprofitable routes because of its flag-carrier status.Mueller's toughest challenge, however, will be those job cuts.The airline has been under strong pressure to reduce its excessive workforce since last spring's mystery disappearance. It currently has 20,000 employees.Khazanah, which wants to reduce that number by 30%, finished evaluating every employee at the end of February.Massive job cuts were a big reason Mueller was able to turn around Aer Lingus. But Mueller will face an uphill battle duplicating that success with Malaysia Airlines.The country's ruling party counts the airline's labor union as an important voting bloc, and the union has a history of wielding its political clout to block restructuring measures.The union remains dead set against any workforce reduction.Just before it was delisted on Dec. 12, Malaysia Airlines announced a net loss of 576 million ringgit ($157 million) for the July-September quarter.Fuel prices have since plummeted, which is expected to improve the airline's earnings. But the success of the carrier's fix-it plan still hinges on whether Mueller can substantially cut costs -- and that means jobs.Malaysia Airlines is not alone in Southeast Asia when it comes to tragedy. At the end of December, an AirAsia flight on its way from Surabaya, Indonesia, to Singapore plunged into the Java Sea.While the causes of these accidents have not been fully ascertained, they seem to suggest that the region's airlines and regulators have failed to keep up with the sharp increase in passenger traffic.The total number of passengers who used Southeast Asia's four busiest commuter airports -- Sokaerno-Hatta, which serves greater Jakarta; Singapore Changi Airport; Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok's main gateway; and Kuala Lumpur Airport -- topped 210 million in 2013, up 50% from 2009.The surge in passenger traffic is due mainly to a sharp increase in the number of budget airlines.The AirAsia flight that crashed into the Java Sea did not have the paperwork to fly that day. Other airlines in Indonesia were discovered to be operating unauthorized flights as well.The facts indicate aviation authorities have been overwhelmed by the huge number of flights.Airline management teams also seem to be having trouble keeping up. The Malaysia Airlines flight that was apparently shot down was flying over an area where armed conflict was taking place.Even though flights over the area were not banned, the airline's commitment to safety was called into question.Southeast Asian airlines are also grappling with a shortage of experienced and skilled pilots.In response to the AirAsia crash, Indonesia's Ministry of Transportation raised the floor under airfare discounts.Previously, low-cost carriers were allowed to offer discounts of up to 70% of the highest price on each route, or tickets that cost only 30% of the top fare. That floor is now 40%.The measure is meant to get management thinking more about safety and less about discounts. SYDNEY: A Malaysia Airlines towelette was found on a Western Australian beach four months after MH370 vanished, investigators revealed Tuesday, but they said it was impossible to know if it came from the missing plane.Flight MH370 disappeared on March 8, 2014 with 239 people on board and no sign of the aircraft has ever been found. It is thought to have gone down in the Indian Ocean off Australia's west coast.It emerged that a towelette -- a wet wipe usually served on board with drinks or meals -- with the Malaysia Airlines logo was discovered on a beach at Thirsty Point, some 200 kilometres (124 miles) north of Perth.The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), which is leading the underwater search for the plane, has previously looked at items washed up on beaches in Australia's west but none have ever shed light on what happened -- and it said the towelette was no different."A 6cm x 8cm moist towelette in wrapping branded with the Malaysia Airlines logo was found at Thirsty Point on 2 July 2014. It was handed in to the Western Australian police," the bureau said in a statement after the discovery was reported by Australian media."It is unlikely, however, that such a common item with no unique identifier could be conclusively linked with MH370."One year on, mystery continues to surround the fate of the Boeing 777-200 aircraft that disappeared from air traffic control radar after taking off from Kuala Lumpur on a flight to Beijing.Analysis of satellite data later revealed it flew for more than six hours after contact was lost, and suggested it crashed into the southern Indian Ocean after running out of fuel.Malaysia's handling of the disaster has been criticised from the start and an interim investigation report released Sunday uncovered a dud beacon battery and more potential missed opportunities to track the plane.However, the airline said the battery on the separate cockpit voice recorder -- good for 30 days once activated -- was up-to-date and would have transmitted a signal once it hit water.

'Families deserve answers'

Sunday's report said investigators had probed a range of issues including the personal, psychological and financial profiles of the jet's captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah and his co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid, as well as the backgrounds of the 10 cabin crew.But although some suspicion had fallen on the cockpit crew, the report mentioned no evidence implicating either of them.It also said that according to available data and maintenance records, nothing alarming was detected in the plane's major mechanical systems.Australian officials have expressed cautious optimism that the plane would eventually be found, and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said Canberra, along with Malaysia and China, remained committed to the search.So far more than 26,000 square kilometres -- over 40 percent -- of the priority zone of the seabed where the plane likely went down has been searched using specialist equipment."The families deserve answers and we are doing all we can to get them," Truss said.Searchers hope to have completed the designated underwater search area by May.

KUALA LUMPUR: A similar underwater locator beacon battery (ULB) unit was installed with the Solid State Cockpit Voice Recorder (SSCVR) providing sufficient energy for the beacon to transmit for 30 days after it was activated.Malaysia Airlines in a statement said, the ULB was still running on the day the ill-fated Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 went missing on March 8, 2014.The statement was issued in response to an interim report released on the investigation into the year-long disappearance.MAS also clarified that the consignment of Motorola Lithium-ion batteries was physically inspected by MASKargo personnel in Penang and customs inspectors, prior to being sealed before the item left the Penang Cargo Complex.The beacon is designed to transmit signal if a crash occurs in water.The company also confirmed that the inspection procedures performed on the item are in line with those defined by ICAO.The Engineering Maintenance System was not updated correctly when the ULB battery was first installed.
