in Fuhais (jordan)-Decorated stone houses, rolling drums and the smell of grilled wild boar meat wafting through the air. It is a day of celebration for Jordan’s last Christian enclave: a young couple from two of the most prominent Christian families in the area are getting married. We are a twenty minute drive away from the Jordanian capital Amman, in a corner of the Middle East where alcohol is no taboo, wild boar hunters are the most sought after chefs, houses are decorated with depictions of the Virgin Mary, everyone dances the dabke and men and women flirt under the very noses of their family and friends. This is the Christian East. Christians here are mostly Orthodox but there are Catholics as well and they consider themselves proud successors of the Byzantine Empire but they are suffering the siege of radical Islam.The wedding takes place on Sunday and on the (previous) Friday families meet, get to know each other and mingle. There must be about two hundred people here, or more. They are successful traders and entrepreneurs who even welcome Hweishel Akroush, the local mayor whose rival in the previous elections has also been invited. Akroush enters the great dining hall with all the chairs lines up against the wall and there he is: his former rival, sitting across from him. They begin to chat and other quickly join: the subject of their conversation is the Pope’s forthcoming visit to the Holy Land on 24 May, starting in Amman and continuing onto Bethlehem and Jerusalem. “We hope the Pope will speak frankly to the Arab populations,” a 60-something-year-old furniture retailer says, explaining that “the situation here is getting difficult for us.”He is referring to an incident which occurred recently in a business area on the outskirts of Amman. A shop owner cancelled the sale of the building to a Christian entrepreneur at the last minute, at the request of a local Imam. The issue is evidently not taken lightly. “It is a terrible sign because it had never occurred before,” one of the bride’s relatives says. “It shows to what extent the fundamentalists want to marginalize us.” Their loyalty to King Abdullah is undisputed. There are portraits of him in every house and royal flags fly in every corner of this town of 20 thousand inhabitants – the last in the Hashemite kingdom with an overwhelming Christian majority- and whenever Abdullah came to visit three years ago, he was welcomed with open arms. “It’s the Islamic Front that’s the problem because the Muslim Brotherhood want a Jordan that does not include us. They are growing from the inside and want to take away our oxygen from the bottom, daily and in a myriad different ways.”This explains the decision of some of the children of those present to emigrate abroad, to the US in particular. It is practically impossible to pursue a career in the armed forces or in the public administration if you are not a member of the Bedouin tribes that support the monarchy. Some have gone to Michigan and to New Jersey, investing family money in setting up small businesses. We are not witnessing a mass exodus as in the case of Bethlehem’s Christians in the past ten years but it is becoming a growing trend. The mayor knows this, he listens in silence and avoids exaggerating. “We are all Jordanian citizens and this country has always protected us,” he said in a low voice, his hands resting on a carved wooden walking stick. But this is a position his former rival does not share: “The world we grew up in no longer exists, Christians are massacred, killed and persecuted in many Arab countries; the so-called Arab Spring revolutions have made things worse and the Pope is our last hope.” The vast majority of those present say they will be at the Amman stadium to listen to the Pope’s speech. They see him as a sort of sovereign protector as in their view, Arab leaders are seeking a relationship of mutual respect with the Holy See.One 70-year-old man explains why. He owns a lot of property and is thus seen as a guarantor of Fuhais’ enduring Christian identity because he is a faithful interpreter of the unwritten law that prevents the sale of houses to Muslims. “In Europe there are many Muslims, it is interests of Arab leaders to ensure they are treated well so they look to the Holy See for guarantees and the Holy see can ask for guarantees for us,” he observes. These are rudimentary considerations but they are also shared by a former staff member of the US embassy in Amman: “Here, you have to be explicit in order to be understood.” The discussion goes on for two hours, with the mayor becoming increasingly taciturn and his former rival taking encouragement from the support received. Then the wild boar arrives. A number of hunters brought the best cuts from six wild boars they had killed in the past week. It was then cooked in a gigantic brazier. The meat has been diced into small bits, marinated in a spicy sauce and left to cook over a low heat. The meat is served with warm pitta bread and washed down with oodles of red wine. Giving the finest meat as a gift is a culinary ritual which the couple’s hunter uncles traditionally perform, but it also highlights the differences between the Christian community and the Muslim majority. This would explain the collective consensus over an incident which occurred two years ago: five hundred family leaders from Funais poured into the main street, protesting against the conversion of a local Christian girl to Islam. They even went as far as setting her future husband’s car on fire. Christians are defending their territory on many fronts because they are feeling increasingly surrounded. Hence the hope that the Pope will openly express his support for them. But pessimism prevails among the young couple’s peers and many say “we may be the last generation of Christians in Jordan.”

To ensure it’s not just friends of friends who manage to get their hands on them, Palestinian Christians have come up with some very imaginative ways of distributing them fairly: Yesterday parishioners in Beit Jala bet them in games of tombola; today they raffled them off,” said Mario Cornioli, a Tuscan priest “on loan” to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, wrote on his blog “Abuna”. Manger Square in front of the Church of the Nativity will be able to hold 10 thousand people at most, including visitors from Jerusalem and Galilee. “649 permits were sent to the Gaza strip parish which is home to 1800 Christians, most of whom are Orthodox,” Fr. Cornioli told Vatican Insider. But the Israeli authorities have not granted passes to entire families, in some cases they have granted them to children but not their parents and vice versa. So many will have to miss the Pope’s mass. All those aged between 16 and 35 have been left out too. Of Gaza’s young people, therefore, only a select few teens will get to see the Pope. But there is a growing disappointment and sense of unease among the many Christians in the Holy Land, particularly in Galilee: they know they won’t get to see or pray with their beloved Pope,” Fr. Mario explained. “And it’s a pity that this visit brings sadness and disappointment to the hearts of our fellow Christians, when it should be bringing them joy and happiness.” Pope Francis’ gestures and words have really touched the hearts of Palestinian Christians. He talks about the peripheries and frontiers and they often feel they are on such margins. He refers to the Church as a “field hospital” that treats people’s wounds. They feel embraced along with the many wounds, small and big, that have marked them as Christians, Arabs and Palestinians. But the brevity of the Pope’s visit which is focused on commemorating the ecumenical meeting between Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras, has massively narrowed the window of opportunity for members of the local Christian community to meet with the Bishop of Rome. Even the Pope’s brief meeting with Palestine’s Catholic parish priests had in theory been cancelled but it should now take place in the main building of the Latin Patriarchate. Jerusalem’s Christians seem to have it worst off: for security purposes, a curfew has been scheduled for Monday 26 May so no one will be able to greet the Pope with a welcome celebration when he arrives in the Old City,” Fr. Cornioli confirms.In recent days, a group of Christians from Jerusalem, led by some parish priests from the local Latin Catholic Church in San Salvatore, expressed their disappointment to the Church authorities about not being able to even see the Pope pass by; “It is unacceptable that the Pope should go through the streets of the Christian neighbourhood and find them empty and with no sign of life” they wrote in a letter addressed to the Vatican Nuncio Giuseppe Lanzarotto. “But it seems that nothing can be done to compromise this famous “security” which hasnow become the god, to which we must sacrifice everything. This is according to German tabloid Bild, which claims that the cardinal is suspected of embezzling 15 million Euros from Vatican accounts. The newspaper quotes unofficial Vatican sources. The sum of money Tarcisio Bertone is said to have embezzled was apparently intended for a television production company Lux Vide, which the former Vatican Secretary of State has links with, Bild says. Today the newspaper also revealed that the Vatican is investigating the cardinal for embezzling 15 million Euros. The operation allegedly took place “in December 2012 through a convertible bond.” The transaction apparently went ahead despite resistance from the Vatican bank and under pressure from Bertone.But there was no mention whatsoever of this investigation in the report presented yesterday by the director of the Vatican Financial Authority, Brülhart. For now, the Holy See press Office has chosen not to comment on Bild’s report.Speaking to ADNKronos, Cardinal Tarcision Bertone denied the German newspaper's allegations outright. Those who embrace the Holy Spirit will experience a solid and lasting peace, unlike those who choose to focus on other things such as money.The peace power offers is in constant danger of vanishing: you many be rich and important today but tomorrow it could all be gone, whereas no one can take away the joy that derives from the Holy Spirit; it is “definitive”.The Pope’s homily this morning was inspired by the passage from John’s Gospel which describes how Jesus is about to face the Passion and before going to his disciples he says: "My peace I give you." Francis underlined that the peace of the Son of God “differs completely from the "peace that the world gives us", because "it is somewhat superficial” it offers a “degree of calm, even a certain joy", but only "up to a certain point.”"For example, it offers us the peace of wealth: 'I am at peace because I have everything I need, everything organized for my whole life, I do not have to worry ... ' This is a peace that the world gives. Do not worry, you won’t have any problems because you have so much money ... the peace of wealth. And Jesus tells us not to trust this peace, because with great realism he tells us: 'Look, there are thieves ... thieves can steal your wealth!' Money does not give you a definitive peace. Just think, metal also rusts! What does it mean? A stock market crash and all your money is gone! It is not a secure peace: It is a superficial temporal peace.”Francis then focused on two other types of “worldly peace”: “Power”, which does not work either – he pointed out – because “a coup can stake it away.” And “vanity”, which the Pope defined a "peace of conjecture", today you are greatly appreciated and tomorrow you will be insulted , "like Jesus between Palm Sunday and Good Friday.”"Instead, the peace that Jesus gives is of a completely different substance: The peace of Jesus is a Person, the Holy Spirit! European Union (EU) Ambassador to Israel Lars Faaborg-Andersen spoke to reporters in Jerusalem on Tuesday, saying that he didn't feel peace talks should have been stopped last month over the unity deal between Fatah and the terrorist group Hamas."I don't see a reason for the peace talks stopping in order to send a message that there's a difference between Fatah and Hamas," opined Faaborg-Andersen.While indeed Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction has made clear that there is little distinction between them and Hamas in terms of their goal of destroying Israel, which would of course call the end result of any peace process into question, the ambassador's remarks are made the more questionable given EU policy.The EU lost no time in welcoming the Fatah-Hamas unity deal. However, Hamas is on the EU's official list of terrorist organizations. That listing specifically includes both "Hamas" and "Hamas-Izz al-Din al-Qassem," meaning that both the military and governmental branches of Hamas are recognized as terror groups by the EU."There's no doubt that the peace process really occupies the EU, as it does (Prime Minister Binyamin) Netanyahu, who said he wants two states," added the ambassador." Therefore we supported the initiative of (US Secretary of State John) Kerry, and we put pressure on both sides, including the (Palestinian) Authority. We are concerned about the blocked path (of negotiations) and call for a return to talks, and restraint from taking unilateral steps," concluded Faaborg-Andersen.The EU ambassador has indeed attempted to put pressure, at least on Israel, in threats made in February, when he said that if peace talks fail "there is a risk that you (Israel) will face increasing isolation," in a less than subtle hint at boycotts.The comments came just days after Kerry threatened Israel with boycotts, which was made more ominous by reports that Washington's top diplomat was himself orchestrating the European boycott threats.

Education Minister Shai Piron (Yesh Atid), in an interview with Arutz Sheva, responded to reports Tuesday that he is cutting the funding to state religious schools so as to transfer hundreds of millions of shekels to Arab schools instead."I'm interested in producing a differential budgeting. The division is according to (economic) deciles; those from lower deciles need to receive more, and those from higher deciles will get less, we need to reduce the gaps," stated Piron.According to Piron, this principle of redistribution based on financial situation is being applied regardless of demographics, be it among state religious, secular, Arab or hareidi schools. "I'm the education minister of the public education; even a hareidi student learning in (a) state education (school) will get more," said the minister.Piron added that the budget would be determined based on the economic makeup of schools' location, saying "a religious student in Ofakim (a poorer town near Be'er Sheva) will get more, in Savyon (a wealthy town outside Tel Aviv) less.""What can you do, the Arab public is at the bottom of the economic-social ladder," said Piron.Trying to distance from the reports of intentional siphoning, Piron argued "no education minister in the history of the country gave religious education more in the budget base." He emphasized "the budget for religious education will not be cut at all."
Even with the new differential budgeting, Piron argued that the budget factors for religious education will remain, saying "the hours for prayer will not be touched, hours with a rabbi will not be touched."
Piron announced that the new budget would include a new feature factored in, namely the separation of classes on the basis of gender, as practiced by several religious schools."For the first time in the state's history I'm budgeting the separation of classes. No education minister to this day budgeted the separation of classes. I'm going to take it to the court," said Piron.

A key missile defense system set to come online in the coming year could face the chopping block if the army isn’t allocated enough money, Israel’s defense chief warned Tuesday, as tensions over military funding hit a fever pitch.The statement by Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon came a day after IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz said he was canceling army reserve training for the rest of the year due to budget cuts.Speaking during a visit to the Palmachim air base, Ya’alon stated that in light of cuts to the Defense Ministry’s budget, the IDF may halt plans to deploy the David’s Sling anti-missile system, which is designed to intercept medium-to long-range rockets and cruise missiles fired at ranges from 40 to 300 kilometers (25-80 miles).David’s Sling, sometimes referred to as Magic Wand, is being jointly developed by the Israeli defense contractor Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and the American defense contractor Raytheon. It was expected to enter operational service in late 2014.The comments came as the Defense Ministry has been warning of budget shortfalls which will affect its ability to operate. The Finance Ministry, however, has said it will not increase the amount it doles to the army.Ya’alon said that though last year he believed budget cuts were necessary in order to deal with the country’s economic crisis, he has recently found that Israel was financially stable and thinks there is no reason to risk the country’s security by cutting back on IDF funding, Israel Radio reported.Ya’alon’s remarks were apparently given as a reply to accusations that he had managed the IDF’s budget in a wasteful manner over the past three years.On Tuesday, former IDF chief of staff Shaul Mofaz claimed Ya’alon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the entire security cabinet were all responsible for the IDF’s current financial state, as they had failed to agree upon a multi-year budget plan, Israel Radio reported.During a session at the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee earlier Tuesday, Gantz said he was “extremely worried” over the proposed budget cuts, since the IDF must “ensure its level of readiness” for a long period of time.Committee chairman Ze’ev Elkin later criticized Gantz for attempting to alter government policy and decisions.“You can’t stretch the blanket in every direction,” Elkin told Gantz.“You should not be part of the argument, but [instead] do what you can with the tools the government has placed at your disposal.”On Sunday, Gantz said he had canceled reserve training for the rest of the year because of cuts to the defense budget.“We are dealing with a complicated resource challenge, the likes of which we have not seen before, and which could have dramatic consequences for the future… These days we are forced to make painful decisions which affect all areas — reserves and standing army, training in the field and operations in the rear,” he said.Last week, a senior military official, speaking anonymously, told Channel 10 that the army had run out of money and needed “billions of shekels within days in order to continue to operate.”He noted that the military had cut armored units and fighter jet squadrons and fired a thousand people in under three months, but said that was still not enough to counter the lack of cash.Also last week, Deputy Finance Minister Miki Levy (Yesh Atid) warned that the Defense Ministry would not see its budget increased, despite the news Friday that Ya’alon and Gantz had decided to cancel a major upcoming national preparedness exercise in light of the ongoing budgetary dispute.Levy accused the defense establishment of mismanaging the budget and urged defense officials to “sit down and prioritize.”Ya’alon last Wednesday described the fiscal state of the country’s defenses as a “crisis,” and criticized the Finance Ministry’s conduct in apportioning funds.
“We are in a crisis; this is a fatal blow to training,” he told the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. “We are going to decrease the level of air, sea, and land training even further, and preparedness, readiness and competence will suffer.“Starting next month we will be forced to enter a difficult period. This is a harsh blow to the competency of the regular fighters, not to mention the reserves,” he said.Last May, the government set the IDF budget at NIS 51 billion ($14.5 billion). European Jewish Association (EJA) General Director Rabbi Menachem Margolin led a briefing for EU ambassadors and officials at week's end, following the release of the most comprehensive survey to date on global anti-Semitism by the ADL, which revealed startling levels across the continent.Chairing the high-level meeting at the EJA's headquarters in Brussels, with attendees including ambassadors and officials from 18 EU Member States, as well representatives from The Simon Wiesenthal Center, The Belgian League Against anti-Semitism, Britain's Community Security Trust and Jewish communities across Europe, Rabbi Margolin called upon all EU member states to establish central committees, directly accountable to the respective prime ministers, in order to lead the fight against anti-Semitism."This meeting is a wake-up call," insisted Rabbi Margolin. “The focus of EU efforts should not only be on specific anti–Semitic incidents, as horrific as they are, but rather on the increasing legitimacy hate groups are receiving from the European public and the rise of extreme right wing parties throughout the continent," he added.Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations at the Simon Wiesenthal Center warned of the vulnerability of European Jews amongst other minority groups, as he warned that divisions between minority groups was responsible in part for the startling rise in the number of hate sites on the internet, which he revealed had jumped from one sole site when the Center began recording data in 1995, to 30,000 today.“This is the fault of member states and their individual governments, as it’s their job to work out to contain hate before it travels to Strasbourg,” he added.Rabbi Binyomin Jacobs, Chief Rabbi of the Netherlands stated that: "Today, there is a strong political polarization, especially in Holland. Radicals from both sides of the political spectrum have become more extreme, and the middle ground is disappearing. I can’t walk a whole day in the street without having at least one person shout the words 'dirty Jew' at me, because I am visibly Jewish."Joel Rubinfeld, President of The Belgian League Against anti-Semitism spoke of his concern, as he warned the assembly that “all recent reports are sounding alarm bells regarding the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe.” Citing statistics from the recent EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) report into data from eight European countries which are home to 92% of European Jewry, as well as the ADL survey of anti-Semitism across 100 countries, he insisted that Holocaust Education was insufficient in addressing prejudice in European youth and beyond, rather it was important to “give them the bigger picture in terms of education”.Speaking of the link between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism, he continued: “Criticizing Israel is not anti-Semitism. If criticizing Israel’s policies was anti-Semitic, 90% of the Israeli people would be anti-Semites. But there is a fine line – comparing Israel to a Nazi start is crossing that line.”Mark Gardner, spokesperson, for the UK-based Community Security Trust, spoke of the importance of using existing data on anti-Semitism to lobby politicians to mobilize the fight against anti-Semitism, as he concluded: “The fact that 69% of Greeks think it’s acceptable to tell someone in a survey that they’re anti-Semitic is not tolerable. A senior Palestinian official on Tuesday accused Israel of the “deliberate execution” of two Palestinian teens shot dead by border policemen in a clash in the West Bank last week.But an Israeli army spokesman told AFP that video footage purporting to show the two being killed without provocation on Thursday had been doctored. And the IDF’s spokesman Peter Lerner told The Times of Israel that IDF forces used “only riot control techniques” to contain “a violent riot” that day. BRUSSELS - Scissors in hand, anti-EU nationalist Geert Wilders of the Netherlands on Tuesday (20 May) vandalised the European Union flag in front of the European Parliament in Brussels.In a publicity stunt amid the dozen or so cafes at Place Luxembourg, overlooked by the parliament’s tall glass structures, Wilders cut out a yellow star before unfolding the Dutch flag in its place.The nationalist, who runs the Dutch Freedom Party, is convinced he will be able to form a new group of eurosceptic MEPs following the upcoming European Parliament elections. He wants the Netherlands to leave the Union, regain its sovereignty, and shut down its borders to asylum seekers.His other goal - to pull apart the EU from within by forming the anti-EU faction in parliament - will require at least 25 MEPs from seven EU member states.Wilders says he will be meeting with other eurosceptic politicians next week in Brussels to work out a deal.“It is our task to try to work together to overstep our differences, to not get into fights about our leadership, to overstep ‘our shadows’ as we say in the Netherlands,” he said.He was short on details.He would not say which parties he will meet, but noted he intends to get Ukip leader Nigel Farage to sign up along with Marine Le Pen from France's National Front.Wilders has yet to meet or discuss the proposal with Farage, but said like-minded parties from the United Kingdom, France, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands have more in common than they do differences.Farage, for his part, has vowed never to join forces with Le Pen, branding the French national's party anti-semitic.“I know he is very sceptical about working together, maybe not so much towards my party but more to the party of Mrs Le Pen,” said Wilders.He added: “I don’t know if it will work, I think I should try, we should try and of course at the end of day, it is up to Farage himself to decide whether he would want to or not.”Asked if he would be able to form a group without Farage’s support, Wilders said Yes.“I think it will be possible but hey it’s better to have even more than seven [member states] so let’s not aim at the minimum but go for the maximum,” he noted.Recent poll results for Farage’s Ukip give contrasting results ahead of the 22 May elections.One poll by ComRes says Ukip is ahead with 35 percent, while another by ICM says it slipped to third place behind the Conservatives.A TNS-Nipo poll from 14 May puts Wilder's PVV third place at 11.9 percent.

Nato chief describes 'outrageous' Russia as threat to Europe

BRUSSELS - Nato chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said Russia’s partition of Ukraine has created “a completely new security situation in Europe.”“What we have seen in Ukraine is outrageous”, he told a regular press briefing in Brussels on Monday (19 May).“For more than 20 years we have based our defence planning on the assumption that there would be no imminent threat from Russia, but now we have seen the Russian doctrine that Russia reserves the right to intervene in other countries to protect the interests of Russian communities and we have seen in Crimea and in Ukraine that this doctrine is not just words - it can easily be turned into action.”“We have seen that in the Russian military doctrine Nato is considered as an adversary, and I think we should take that seriously.”He accused Russian leader Vladimir Putin of lying.Referring to a Kremlin statement earlier in the day that Russia had pulled back forces, Fogh Rasmussen said: “Now, I think, it’s the third Putin statement on withdrawal of Russia troops, but so far we haven’t seen any withdrawal at all. There’s absolutely no reason why the Russians should mass a military force of this scale along Ukraine’s borders.”He noted: “there is a clear risk instability in [Ukraine’s] eastern regions will make it difficult to conduct elections in that part of the country". He added: “there’s no doubt Russia is deeply involved in the destabilisation of the situation in eastern Ukraine”.He predicted more trouble in the run-up to EU signatures of free trade pacts with Georgia and Moldova in June.“It’s my assessment that we will see the same [Russian pressure] as Moldova and Georgia are going to finalise these agreements,” he said.“Based on previous experience, that might include gas prices, gas supply, trade restrictions and also attempts to further destabilise the situation in these countries through exploiting the protracted conflicts in Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Transniestria.”Earlier on Monday, while in Slovakia, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov also said the Ukraine crisis is a pivotal moment.“These relations require essential rethinking and with both our partners in the European Union and with Nato member states we are trying to conduct an analysis in order to better understand where we are,” he noted.Fogh Rasmussen indicated Nato will redraft its defence plans and consider deploying more assets in eastern Europe at its summit in September.But the two sides are still talking, with a meeting of Nato officials and Russian diplomats foreseen next week.Fogh Rasmussen also underlined “there is no military solution” to the Ukraine crisis and said there is no question of redeploying nuclear weapons on Russia’s borders, in line with a Nato-Russia accord from 1997. “At this stage, I do not foresee any Nato request to change the content of the Nato-Russia founding act," he noted.

05/17/2014 - VATICAN INSIDER -Jordan’s Christians long for the visit of Francis their “saviour”The Jordanian landscape-A trip through the village of Fuhais, filled with wild boar banquets, fears and hopes. “Many are leaving, the Arab Spring revolts have ruined us. in Fuhais (jordan)-Decorated stone houses, rolling drums and the smell of grilled wild boar meat wafting through the air. It is a day of celebration for Jordan’s last Christian enclave: a young couple from two of the most prominent Christian families in the area are getting married. We are a twenty minute drive away from the Jordanian capital Amman, in a corner of the Middle East where alcohol is no taboo, wild boar hunters are the most sought after chefs, houses are decorated with depictions of the Virgin Mary, everyone dances the dabke and men and women flirt under the very noses of their family and friends. This is the Christian East. Christians here are mostly Orthodox but there are Catholics as well and they consider themselves proud successors of the Byzantine Empire but they are suffering the siege of radical Islam.The wedding takes place on Sunday and on the (previous) Friday families meet, get to know each other and mingle. There must be about two hundred people here, or more. They are successful traders and entrepreneurs who even welcome Hweishel Akroush, the local mayor whose rival in the previous elections has also been invited. Akroush enters the great dining hall with all the chairs lines up against the wall and there he is: his former rival, sitting across from him. They begin to chat and other quickly join: the subject of their conversation is the Pope’s forthcoming visit to the Holy Land on 24 May, starting in Amman and continuing onto Bethlehem and Jerusalem. “We hope the Pope will speak frankly to the Arab populations,” a 60-something-year-old furniture retailer says, explaining that “the situation here is getting difficult for us.”He is referring to an incident which occurred recently in a business area on the outskirts of Amman. A shop owner cancelled the sale of the building to a Christian entrepreneur at the last minute, at the request of a local Imam. The issue is evidently not taken lightly. “It is a terrible sign because it had never occurred before,” one of the bride’s relatives says. “It shows to what extent the fundamentalists want to marginalize us.” Their loyalty to King Abdullah is undisputed. There are portraits of him in every house and royal flags fly in every corner of this town of 20 thousand inhabitants – the last in the Hashemite kingdom with an overwhelming Christian majority- and whenever Abdullah came to visit three years ago, he was welcomed with open arms. “It’s the Islamic Front that’s the problem because the Muslim Brotherhood want a Jordan that does not include us. They are growing from the inside and want to take away our oxygen from the bottom, daily and in a myriad different ways.”This explains the decision of some of the children of those present to emigrate abroad, to the US in particular. It is practically impossible to pursue a career in the armed forces or in the public administration if you are not a member of the Bedouin tribes that support the monarchy. Some have gone to Michigan and to New Jersey, investing family money in setting up small businesses. We are not witnessing a mass exodus as in the case of Bethlehem’s Christians in the past ten years but it is becoming a growing trend. The mayor knows this, he listens in silence and avoids exaggerating. “We are all Jordanian citizens and this country has always protected us,” he said in a low voice, his hands resting on a carved wooden walking stick. But this is a position his former rival does not share: “The world we grew up in no longer exists, Christians are massacred, killed and persecuted in many Arab countries; the so-called Arab Spring revolutions have made things worse and the Pope is our last hope.” The vast majority of those present say they will be at the Amman stadium to listen to the Pope’s speech. They see him as a sort of sovereign protector as in their view, Arab leaders are seeking a relationship of mutual respect with the Holy See.One 70-year-old man explains why. He owns a lot of property and is thus seen as a guarantor of Fuhais’ enduring Christian identity because he is a faithful interpreter of the unwritten law that prevents the sale of houses to Muslims. “In Europe there are many Muslims, it is interests of Arab leaders to ensure they are treated well so they look to the Holy See for guarantees and the Holy see can ask for guarantees for us,” he observes. These are rudimentary considerations but they are also shared by a former staff member of the US embassy in Amman: “Here, you have to be explicit in order to be understood.” The discussion goes on for two hours, with the mayor becoming increasingly taciturn and his former rival taking encouragement from the support received. Then the wild boar arrives. A number of hunters brought the best cuts from six wild boars they had killed in the past week. It was then cooked in a gigantic brazier. The meat has been diced into small bits, marinated in a spicy sauce and left to cook over a low heat. The meat is served with warm pitta bread and washed down with oodles of red wine. Giving the finest meat as a gift is a culinary ritual which the couple’s hunter uncles traditionally perform, but it also highlights the differences between the Christian community and the Muslim majority. This would explain the collective consensus over an incident which occurred two years ago: five hundred family leaders from Funais poured into the main street, protesting against the conversion of a local Christian girl to Islam. They even went as far as setting her future husband’s car on fire. Christians are defending their territory on many fronts because they are feeling increasingly surrounded. Jerusalem’s Christians seem to have it worst off: for security purposes, a curfew has been scheduled for Monday 26 May so no one will be able to greet the Pope with a welcome celebration when he arrives in the Old City,” Fr. Cornioli confirms.In recent days, a group of Christians from Jerusalem, led by some parish priests from the local Latin Catholic Church in San Salvatore, expressed their disappointment to the Church authorities about not being able to even see the Pope pass by; “It is unacceptable that the Pope should go through the streets of the Christian neighbourhood and find them empty and with no sign of life” they wrote in a letter addressed to the Vatican Nuncio Giuseppe Lanzarotto. “But it seems that nothing can be done to compromise this famous “security” which hasnow become the god, to which we must sacrifice everything. As usual our small community will have to pay the price of this.” According to the priest, “Pope Francis will enter a ghost town and will not find one child to greet him, no little old lady to touch him, he will have no sick people to greet or someone to exchange his zucchetto with. rome-The Vatican has apparently launched an investigation into former Secretary of State, Tarcisio Bertone, who has been accused of embezzlement. This is according to German tabloid Bild, which claims that the cardinal is suspected of embezzling 15 million Euros from Vatican accounts. The newspaper quotes unofficial Vatican sources. The sum of money Tarcisio Bertone is said to have embezzled was apparently intended for a television production company Lux Vide, which the former Vatican Secretary of State has links with, Bild says. Today the newspaper also revealed that the Vatican is investigating the cardinal for embezzling 15 million Euros. The operation allegedly took place “in December 2012 through a convertible bond.” The transaction apparently went ahead despite resistance from the Vatican bank and under pressure from Bertone.But there was no mention whatsoever of this investigation in the report presented yesterday by the director of the Vatican Financial Authority, Brülhart. For now, the Holy See press Office has chosen not to comment on Bild’s report.Speaking to ADNKronos, Cardinal Tarcision Bertone denied the German newspaper's allegations outright. Those who embrace the Holy Spirit will experience a solid and lasting peace, unlike those who choose to focus on other things such as money.The peace power offers is in constant danger of vanishing: you many be rich and important today but tomorrow it could all be gone, whereas no one can take away the joy that derives from the Holy Spirit; it is “definitive”.The Pope’s homily this morning was inspired by the passage from John’s Gospel which describes how Jesus is about to face the Passion and before going to his disciples he says: "My peace I give you." Francis underlined that the peace of the Son of God “differs completely from the "peace that the world gives us", because "it is somewhat superficial” it offers a “degree of calm, even a certain joy", but only "up to a certain point.”"For example, it offers us the peace of wealth: 'I am at peace because I have everything I need, everything organized for my whole life, I do not have to worry ... ' This is a peace that the world gives. Do not worry, you won’t have any problems because you have so much money ... the peace of wealth. European Union (EU) Ambassador to Israel Lars Faaborg-Andersen spoke to reporters in Jerusalem on Tuesday, saying that he didn't feel peace talks should have been stopped last month over the unity deal between Fatah and the terrorist group Hamas."I don't see a reason for the peace talks stopping in order to send a message that there's a difference between Fatah and Hamas," opined Faaborg-Andersen.While indeed Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction has made clear that there is little distinction between them and Hamas in terms of their goal of destroying Israel, which would of course call the end result of any peace process into question, the ambassador's remarks are made the more questionable given EU policy.The EU lost no time in welcoming the Fatah-Hamas unity deal. However, Hamas is on the EU's official list of terrorist organizations. That listing specifically includes both "Hamas" and "Hamas-Izz al-Din al-Qassem," meaning that both the military and governmental branches of Hamas are recognized as terror groups by the EU."There's no doubt that the peace process really occupies the EU, as it does (Prime Minister Binyamin) Netanyahu, who said he wants two states," added the ambassador." Therefore we supported the initiative of (US Secretary of State John) Kerry, and we put pressure on both sides, including the (Palestinian) Authority. Education Minister Shai Piron (Yesh Atid), in an interview with Arutz Sheva, responded to reports Tuesday that he is cutting the funding to state religious schools so as to transfer hundreds of millions of shekels to Arab schools instead."I'm interested in producing a differential budgeting. The division is according to (economic) deciles; those from lower deciles need to receive more, and those from higher deciles will get less, we need to reduce the gaps," stated Piron.According to Piron, this principle of redistribution based on financial situation is being applied regardless of demographics, be it among state religious, secular, Arab or hareidi schools. "I'm the education minister of the public education; even a hareidi student learning in (a) state education (school) will get more," said the minister.Piron added that the budget would be determined based on the economic makeup of schools' location, saying "a religious student in Ofakim (a poorer town near Be'er Sheva) will get more, in Savyon (a wealthy town outside Tel Aviv) less.""What can you do, the Arab public is at the bottom of the economic-social ladder," said Piron.Trying to distance from the reports of intentional siphoning, Piron argued "no education minister in the history of the country gave religious education more in the budget base." He emphasized "the budget for religious education will not be cut at all."
Even with the new differential budgeting, Piron argued that the budget factors for religious education will remain, saying "the hours for prayer will not be touched, hours with a rabbi will not be touched."
Piron announced that the new budget would include a new feature factored in, namely the separation of classes on the basis of gender, as practiced by several religious schools."For the first time in the state's history I'm budgeting the separation of classes. No education minister to this day budgeted the separation of classes. I'm going to take it to the court," said Piron.

A key missile defense system set to come online in the coming year could face the chopping block if the army isn’t allocated enough money, Israel’s defense chief warned Tuesday, as tensions over military funding hit a fever pitch.The statement by Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon came a day after IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz said he was canceling army reserve training for the rest of the year due to budget cuts.Speaking during a visit to the Palmachim air base, Ya’alon stated that in light of cuts to the Defense Ministry’s budget, the IDF may halt plans to deploy the David’s Sling anti-missile system, which is designed to intercept medium-to long-range rockets and cruise missiles fired at ranges from 40 to 300 kilometers (25-80 miles).David’s Sling, sometimes referred to as Magic Wand, is being jointly developed by the Israeli defense contractor Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and the American defense contractor Raytheon. It was expected to enter operational service in late 2014.The comments came as the Defense Ministry has been warning of budget shortfalls which will affect its ability to operate. The Finance Ministry, however, has said it will not increase the amount it doles to the army.Ya’alon said that though last year he believed budget cuts were necessary in order to deal with the country’s economic crisis, he has recently found that Israel was financially stable and thinks there is no reason to risk the country’s security by cutting back on IDF funding, Israel Radio reported.Ya’alon’s remarks were apparently given as a reply to accusations that he had managed the IDF’s budget in a wasteful manner over the past three years.On Tuesday, former IDF chief of staff Shaul Mofaz claimed Ya’alon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the entire security cabinet were all responsible for the IDF’s current financial state, as they had failed to agree upon a multi-year budget plan, Israel Radio reported.During a session at the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee earlier Tuesday, Gantz said he was “extremely worried” over the proposed budget cuts, since the IDF must “ensure its level of readiness” for a long period of time.Committee chairman Ze’ev Elkin later criticized Gantz for attempting to alter government policy and decisions.“You can’t stretch the blanket in every direction,” Elkin told Gantz.“You should not be part of the argument, but [instead] do what you can with the tools the government has placed at your disposal.”On Sunday, Gantz said he had canceled reserve training for the rest of the year because of cuts to the defense budget.“We are dealing with a complicated resource challenge, the likes of which we have not seen before, and which could have dramatic consequences for the future… These days we are forced to make painful decisions which affect all areas — reserves and standing army, training in the field and operations in the rear,” he said.Last week, a senior military official, speaking anonymously, told Channel 10 that the army had run out of money and needed “billions of shekels within days in order to continue to operate.”He noted that the military had cut armored units and fighter jet squadrons and fired a thousand people in under three months, but said that was still not enough to counter the lack of cash.Also last week, Deputy Finance Minister Miki Levy (Yesh Atid) warned that the Defense Ministry would not see its budget increased, despite the news Friday that Ya’alon and Gantz had decided to cancel a major upcoming national preparedness exercise in light of the ongoing budgetary dispute.Levy accused the defense establishment of mismanaging the budget and urged defense officials to “sit down and prioritize.”Ya’alon last Wednesday described the fiscal state of the country’s defenses as a “crisis,” and criticized the Finance Ministry’s conduct in apportioning funds.
“We are in a crisis; this is a fatal blow to training,” he told the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. “We are going to decrease the level of air, sea, and land training even further, and preparedness, readiness and competence will suffer.“Starting next month we will be forced to enter a difficult period. This is a harsh blow to the competency of the regular fighters, not to mention the reserves,” he said.Last May, the government set the IDF budget at NIS 51 billion ($14.5 billion). European Jewish Association (EJA) General Director Rabbi Menachem Margolin led a briefing for EU ambassadors and officials at week's end, following the release of the most comprehensive survey to date on global anti-Semitism by the ADL, which revealed startling levels across the continent.Chairing the high-level meeting at the EJA's headquarters in Brussels, with attendees including ambassadors and officials from 18 EU Member States, as well representatives from The Simon Wiesenthal Center, The Belgian League Against anti-Semitism, Britain's Community Security Trust and Jewish communities across Europe, Rabbi Margolin called upon all EU member states to establish central committees, directly accountable to the respective prime ministers, in order to lead the fight against anti-Semitism."This meeting is a wake-up call," insisted Rabbi Margolin. “The focus of EU efforts should not only be on specific anti–Semitic incidents, as horrific as they are, but rather on the increasing legitimacy hate groups are receiving from the European public and the rise of extreme right wing parties throughout the continent," he added.Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations at the Simon Wiesenthal Center warned of the vulnerability of European Jews amongst other minority groups, as he warned that divisions between minority groups was responsible in part for the startling rise in the number of hate sites on the internet, which he revealed had jumped from one sole site when the Center began recording data in 1995, to 30,000 today.“This is the fault of member states and their individual governments, as it’s their job to work out to contain hate before it travels to Strasbourg,” he added.Rabbi Binyomin Jacobs, Chief Rabbi of the Netherlands stated that: "Today, there is a strong political polarization, especially in Holland. BRUSSELS - Scissors in hand, anti-EU nationalist Geert Wilders of the Netherlands on Tuesday (20 May) vandalised the European Union flag in front of the European Parliament in Brussels.In a publicity stunt amid the dozen or so cafes at Place Luxembourg, overlooked by the parliament’s tall glass structures, Wilders cut out a yellow star before unfolding the Dutch flag in its place.The nationalist, who runs the Dutch Freedom Party, is convinced he will be able to form a new group of eurosceptic MEPs following the upcoming European Parliament elections. Nato chief describes 'outrageous' Russia as threat to Europe

BRUSSELS - Nato chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said Russia’s partition of Ukraine has created “a completely new security situation in Europe.”“What we have seen in Ukraine is outrageous”, he told a regular press briefing in Brussels on Monday (19 May).“For more than 20 years we have based our defence planning on the assumption that there would be no imminent threat from Russia, but now we have seen the Russian doctrine that Russia reserves the right to intervene in other countries to protect the interests of Russian communities and we have seen in Crimea and in Ukraine that this doctrine is not just words - it can easily be turned into action.”“We have seen that in the Russian military doctrine Nato is considered as an adversary, and I think we should take that seriously.”He accused Russian leader Vladimir Putin of lying.Referring to a Kremlin statement earlier in the day that Russia had pulled back forces, Fogh Rasmussen said: “Now, I think, it’s the third Putin statement on withdrawal of Russia troops, but so far we haven’t seen any withdrawal at all. There’s absolutely no reason why the Russians should mass a military force of this scale along Ukraine’s borders.”He noted: “there is a clear risk instability in [Ukraine’s] eastern regions will make it difficult to conduct elections in that part of the country". He added: “there’s no doubt Russia is deeply involved in the destabilisation of the situation in eastern Ukraine”.He predicted more trouble in the run-up to EU signatures of free trade pacts with Georgia and Moldova in June.“It’s my assessment that we will see the same [Russian pressure] as Moldova and Georgia are going to finalise these agreements,” he said.“Based on previous experience, that might include gas prices, gas supply, trade restrictions and also attempts to further destabilise the situation in these countries through exploiting the protracted conflicts in Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Transniestria.”Earlier on Monday, while in Slovakia, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov also said the Ukraine crisis is a pivotal moment.“These relations require essential rethinking and with both our partners in the European Union and with Nato member states we are trying to conduct an analysis in order to better understand where we are,” he noted.Fogh Rasmussen indicated Nato will redraft its defence plans and consider deploying more assets in eastern Europe at its summit in September.But the two sides are still talking, with a meeting of Nato officials and Russian diplomats foreseen next week.Fogh Rasmussen also underlined “there is no military solution” to the Ukraine crisis and said there is no question of redeploying nuclear weapons on Russia’s borders, in line with a Nato-Russia accord from 1997. “At this stage, I do not foresee any Nato request to change the content of the Nato-Russia founding act," he noted.
Election flashpoint
His remarks on Russia’s role in the "destabilisation" of eastern Ukraine comes amid EU concern Russia will try to derail Ukraine presidential elections on 25 May.The EU sees the vote as crucial for the future of the country.It has warned Russia it will trigger economic sanctions against its banks, high-tech industries, and defence sector if it sabotages the event. But some EU diplomats fear the threat is enough. “We don’t know what might happen in Ukraine, or in Kiev itself, during the elections. There could be provocations, mass protests, or even a bomb placed somewhere in the crowds,” one contact said.EU leaders will hold an informal dinner in Brussels on 27 May in their first opportunity for a joint reaction.But the slump in relations is already causing ripples on the economic front.On Monday, Johannes Teyssen, the CEO of E.ON, Germany’s largest energy firm, said he will not go to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, a flagship business conference in Russia, this week.He blamed agenda problems.But E.ON joins a list of 11 companies who are no longer sending top delegates to St. Petersburg: Airbus Group; Aloca; Bain & Company; Citigroup; ConocoPhillips; Eni; International Paper Company; Morgan Stanley; Pepsi; Siemens; and Visa.“Like many of the American CEOs and industry leaders, we were approached by the [US] state department and talked to about many of the concerns that they had … So based on some of those concerns and comments I made a decision to not attend this year,” Ryan Lance, the CEO of US energy firm Conoco, told Reuters.
