JTA — Although Ukraine has been charting a bloody course toward civil war for months, Irina Zborovskaya had always felt safe in Odessa.Living in a cosmopolitan city where hate crimes are rare and a tradition of tolerance for minorities and dissidents prevails, many Odessites were lulled into a false sense of security by the absence of violence witnessed elsewhere in their country since November, when protests began that ultimately would lead to the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych.But that changed on May 2, when one of the worst bloodbaths to hit Ukraine in recent months erupted in downtown Odessa. Some 42 people died in street fights there between pro-Russian protesters and supporters of the Ukrainian government, many of them perishing after a building was set ablaze.“Even after all that’s been happening in Ukraine, it had remained unthinkable to us that one Odessite could kill another Odessite like that,” said Zborovskaya, the director of the local office of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.“In Odessa, there was more calm than in other places,” she said. “But now I cannot think of a single person here who isn’t worried.”
With its bubbling night life, progressive cultural scene and garden cafe culture, Odessa had remained mostly quiet throughout the upheaval that has engulfed much of Ukraine. The city’s Jews — estimates of their population range from 30,000 to 45,000 — saw almost none of the anti-Jewish violence that accompanied the chaos in Kiev, where four serious assaults of Jews have occurred since November. In two eastern Ukrainian cities, unidentified individuals tried to torch synagogues.But since May 2, the Jewish community of Odessa has been partially paralyzed. While the new Beit Grand Jewish community center is open for regular activities, all special events have been canceled.The center is home to a kindergarten located about 100 yards from where hundreds of protesters stormed a police headquarters on May 4. The suspension will continue until at least May 25, when Ukraine is due to hold its first elections since the revolution.“It’s not safe to have people gather in one place right now,” Zborovskaya said.It appears that no Jews have died as a result of the violence in Odessa, but the eruption has led to reports that local Jewish community leaders were working on an emergency evacuation plan for the city’s Jews.Berl (Boleslav) Kapulkin, a spokesman for the Jewish community of Odessa, said the reports, which appeared last week in the Israeli media, were the result of a misunderstanding. The community has no immediate evacuation plans, Kapulkin said, but there are discussions underway about evacuating in the future if the situation escalates.“If the conflict will grow here into a real war, we, together with all the [Jewish] community, will leave,” Kapulkin said. “But we pray that this does not happen and that God gives peace to Ukraine.”Talk of evacuation was particularly shocking given that many see Odessa as the site of a Jewish cultural revival. Since 2010, the city has held four Limmud Jewish learning conferences with hundreds of participants. The community is also about to open its second Jewish museum; the capital Kiev has none.“We hope this growth will continue,” Zborovskaya said, “but right now it is hard to make predictions.”According to the Jewish Agency, 762 Ukrainian Jews immigrated to Israel in the first quarter of 2014 — an increase of 52 percent over the average of 500 people who immigrated in the corresponding periods of 2009 to 2013. In that period, Israel saw the arrival of 1,900 immigrants on average per year from Ukraine, according to Israel’s absorption ministry.But many Ukrainian Jews have decided to stay despite the hardships and insecurity, said Tzvi Arieli, a former Israeli soldier who lives in Kiev and recently set up a small Jewish self-defense unit there.“Those who wanted to come, came,” Arieli said in reference to the mass immigration to Israel in the 1990s of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian Jews and their family members. “Those who stay, they want to stay.”One who has resolved to stay is Pavel Kozlenko, the 43-year-old head of the Odessa Holocaust Museum and future director of the city’s second Jewish museum. Kozlenko said local Jews are bound to their city by their rich history. Science and Technology Minister Yaakov Perry (Yesh Atid) is trying to shelve the law that was approved Sunday by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation and that would enforce life sentences for terrorist prisoners.On Monday evening, Perry filed an appeal against the law, essentially burying it before it can be brought to the Cabinet for approval.The law would amend one of the Basic Laws of Israel, which allows the President to pardon criminals, by stating certain conditions that would prevent the pardon of any convicted terrorist.The amendment seeks to allow the judges of the court, at the time of sentencing during trials for nationalist murders, terrorist activity or any other heinous crime, to negate the possibility of providing future amnesty.Perry’s move was met with outrage by the Jewish Home party, whose MK Ayelet Shaked proposed the bill along with MK David Tzur (Hatnua). Tzur co-sponsored the bill despite objection by the head of his party, Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, who insists the option of releasing mass-murderers should be kept open.Jewish Home chairman Naftali Bennett slammed Perry’s move, saying it was a “mark of disgrace” on the entire Yesh Atid party."Every day that this law is delayed human life is in danger,” Bennett said. “We will use all the tools at our disposal, including burying laws proposed by Yesh Atid, until this law is passed. ROME — The lights illuminating the Colosseum in Rome will be switched off as a show of support for persecuted Christians around the world and the kidnapped schoolgirls in Nigeria.The initiative on Thursday is being co-sponsored by the Rome Jewish community and the Community of Sant’ Egidio, a Roman Catholic association that fosters interfaith dialogue, with the support of the city’s mayor.A poster for the event calls for “Solidarity with persecuted Christians” and “For the Liberty of the Nigerian Students.”An announcement on the Rome Jewish community website said the general public is invited to meet at the Colosseum, Rome’s most famous ancient monument, to express “solidarity with Christians who risk their lives to profess their religion” and “to say ‘Enough’ to any form of fanaticism and extremism; to say ‘Enough’ to any type of persecution, and to remember the souls of those where were victims of anti-Christian hatred.”It adds, “The persecution of Christians, too often undervalued or hidden behind a veil of indifference, everywhere transcends religious denominations and must prompt an intervention of solidarity by all men and women of good will.”The Roman Catholic Patriarch of Jerusalem said Sunday that vandalism by suspected Jewish extremists “poison the atmosphere” of the upcoming visit to Israel by Pope Francis. VIENNA — A once-promising UN attempt to probe suspicions that Tehran worked on atomic arms is faltering — and with it, hopes that Iran and six world powers can meet their July target date for an overarching nuclear deal.With efforts to draft the text of an agreement starting in Vienna on Wednesday, both sides say that meeting the informal July 20 deadline remains possible. The US administration gives it a 50-50 chance, and Iranian Foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif recently said the talks are progressing at an “unexpectedly fast pace.”The United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany want to reduce Iran’s present nuclear weapons-making potential. Tehran has been engaging with them over the past six months in exchange for full sanctions relief, even though it insists it has no interest in such arms.But the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency is no nearer to closing the books on persistent allegations that Iran worked on nuclear arms in the past. While the IAEA’s probe is formally separate from the talks, the US and its allies insist that Tehran must provide satisfactory explanations to the UN agency as part of any overall deal.Back in November, Tehran agreed to go into deeper explanations of its work on detonators that have a variety of uses, including sparking a nuclear explosion.That has not happened. Three diplomats told The Associated Press Monday that in a recent formal response, Iran continues to insist that there is no nuclear link to the detonators. Tehran says they were developed only to set off conventional military blasts, and later for civilian uses.The IAEA outlined its suspicions in a 2011 report on a wide range of suspected weapons experiments. It said then that Iran’s work on the detonators is of concern, “given their possible application in a nuclear explosive device, and the fact that there are limited civilian and conventional military applications for such technology.”Signed soon after Iran’s reformist government took office, the November Iran-IAEA deal as seen as important for testing Tehran’s professed willingness to de-escalate tensions over its nuclear program.The UN agency and its Western members had hoped the agreement would finally mean Iran would crack open the door on what they say was secret nuclear weapons work.But Tehran’s latest response suggests it is not ready to change its stance.The IAEA first approached Iran about the detonators six years ago. When told of their latest response, Olli Heinonen, who headed the agency’s Iran investigation until 2010, said it was “pretty much how they explained it in 2008.”With the clock ticking down on the informal July comprehensive deal target, IAEA chief Yukiya Amano was pushing ahead on the probe nonetheless. Two of the diplomats said senior agency officials met Monday with Iranian representatives in attempts to persuade Tehran to engage on three additional areas of suspected weapons work even as they sought more answers on the detonators.The diplomats are involved with international efforts to track and curb Iran’s nuclear program. They did not detail what those new areas could be and demanded anonymity because they were not authorized to divulge confidential information.Calls to the Iranian mission to the IAEA went to voicemail, while IAEA spokeswoman Gill Tudor said the agency had no comment.Gary Samore, who negotiated with Iran until last year as US President Barack Obama’s chief adviser on weapons of mass destruction, said he expects the talks to go past July as Iran and the IAEA wrestle over the nuclear arms allegations.Ultimately, he said Iran may find some “useful fiction” — for instance, claiming that renegade scientists were behind the program or that research was done to understand the nuclear weapons technology possessed by Tehran’s enemies.“I think that if all the other issues are resolved this issue will be resolved,” he said. “But it will be the last one to be resolved.”Experts say other, much trickier questions remain to be resolved, though.Other claims outlined in a major November 2011 IAEA report include alleged explosives testing at the Parchin military base near Tehran that the watchdog says would be “strong indicators” of missile development.Iran and the six world powers aim to turn into a lasting accord a temporary deal from November under which Iran scaled back certain nuclear activities for six months in return for minor relief from painful UN and Western sanctions.As part of this sought-after comprehensive accord, as well as reducing in scope its nuclear activities, the six powers want Iran to answer all the IAEA’s outstanding questions.Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is due to hold a working dinner with the powers’ main negotiator, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, on Tuesday before the talks start in earnest on Wednesday.

According to a report posted today by Vanguard, a Nigerian newspaper, the jihadist terror group Boko Haram stormed the town and killed around 300 people.Boko Haram’s official name is Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad, which translated from the Arabic means “People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet’s Teachings and Jihad.” The group is a Takfiri offshoot of the Salafi movement. It has killed Christians, bombed churches, attacked schools, police stations, government installations, and has kidnapped western tourists.Prior to the attack, the establishment media covered an announcement on Monday issued by the Obama administration stating the United States will send military, intelligence and law enforcement advisors to Nigeria to help the government there locate and rescue more than 270 teenage girls abducted by Boko Haram.According to the Los Angeles Times, the team will not be used for military purposes and will share intelligence investigative services in the search for the students kidnapped April 14 from a rural high school in Nigeria’s predominately Muslim northeast. Obama said the abductions may “mobilize the entire international community to finally do something against this horrendous organization.” In October 2013, the U.S. designated Boko Haram a terrorist group.In 2012, Obama invoked the War Powers Resolution to increase the number of U.S. military personnel deployed to Nigeria. The incoming Commander of the U. S. Africa Command (Africom) at the time, Gen. David M. Rodriguez, said Boko Haram operations threatened Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, Mali and Chad. Rodriguez said the U.S. has authority in Africa in response to the threat posed by al-Qaeda.In 2012, The Nigerian Tribune reported Boko Harm’s funding was traced to the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia, specifically from the Al-Muntada Trust Fund. In 2005, The Center for Security Policystated “Al-Muntada has, incidentally, been particularly active in promoting Wahhabi-style Islamism in Nigeria… Al-Muntada… pays for Nigerian clerics to be ‘brainwashed’ in Saudi universities and imposed on Nigerian Muslims through its well-funded network of mosques and schools.”Similar schools, known as madrassas, were established in Pakistan during the CIA’s covert war against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. This is the complaint sent to Fides by the "Northern Christian Association of Nigeria" , concerned about the rapid growth of the phenomenon. The Association reports that it is following five cases, on behalf of the families of the kidnapped girls. But "when we report a case to the police, the officers respond that they can not do anything. Sometimes we believe they are complicit", explains Daniel Babayi, secretary of CAN.Christians in northern Nigeria are victims of the militant Islamist group "Boko Haram" which aims to establish an Islamic state. In a terrorist campaign that has been lasting for months, many churches have been attacked and Christians killed. According to some public statements, Boko Haram said that "kidnapping Christian women is part of the new efforts to attack Christians and force them to leave the North".One of the primary goals of the group are schools. At the beginning of July, more than 40 people, mostly students, were killed in an attack against a college in the state of Yobe. In another recent attack, the dormitory of an institute was set on fire while the children were sleeping and those who tried to escape the fire were gunned down. Boko Haram means "Western education is a sin", and its leader, Abubakar Shekau has publicly asked to multiply attacks against schools "that teach Western education". In response to the war launched by Boko Haram against the nation, for two months in the Nigerian states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, where militants are the strongest threat, there is in effect a state of emergency.

A new video believed to be from Nigerian terror group Boko Haram shows more than 100 kidnapped Christian schoolgirls praying to Allah, and the Islamic terror group’s leader – who was reportedly negotiating with the government – saying he will hold the girls until imprisoned militants are freed.
Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau is seen on the 27-minute video, obtained by the Associated Press, announcing the girls have converted to Islam."Praise be to Allah, the lord of the world," chant the girls in the video, as they are seen wearing black and gray hijabs and reciting the Koran in Arabic as they make Islamic declarations of faith. Many of the girls -- who range in age from 15 to 18 -- are barefoot in the video. Some appear fearful, others desolate, and one said in the video that they had not been harmed, the BBC reported.Three of the girls are shown speaking in the video. Two say they were Christian and have converted to Islam, while the other says she is Muslim."These girls, these girls you occupy yourselves with... we have indeed liberated them. These girls have become Muslims," Shekau says in the video.The majority of the abducted girls are believed to be Christians, although there are also some Muslims among them.Shekau also says he would release the girls in exchange for prisoners. There is no indication of when or where the video was recorded, but the location appears to be rural.The video received Monday by the AP came through channels that have provided previous messages from Boko Haram leader Shekau, who speaks in the video in the Hausa language of northern Nigeria. He is shown in military fatigues cradling an assault rifle on the video, which is imprinted with the Boko Haram insignia of a Koran resting on two crossed assault rifles and below the black Jihadi flag.The United States put a $7 million bounty on Shekau's head last year.
The video is the the first sighting of the abducted girls since more than 300 were taken April 14 from their school in the northern town of Chibok by Islamist militants. Although more than 50 girls escaped their captors and are now safe, at least 276 remain missing.The search so far has centered on the Sambisa forest, with Nigerian troops being aided by advisers from the U.S., Britain and France. Israel offered to assist in the search over the weekend, while Chad, Cameroon and Niger are contributing satellite imagery. The video emerged Monday as the Nigerian government reportedly made "indirect contact" with the terrorist group. The report from Sky News did not specify how the two sides got in touch, but a special adviser to Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan told Sky News that Nigeria would not pay to secure the girls' release, "because the sale of human beings is a crime against humanity."The Nigerian government has been heavily criticized for how it has conducted its search for the missing girls, who were taken after taking final exams. On Friday, the group Amnesty International claimed that Nigerian security forces were aware that a convoy of fighters from Boko Haram were approaching the town of Chibok four hours before the kidnapping, but did nothing to stop the kidnappings.It is believed that 53 girls were able to escape the kidnappers. One of them, 19-year-old Sarah Lawan, told the Associated Press that her ordeal was "too terrifying for words," and added that she was afraid to go back to school. Shekau claimed credit for the abductions in a video last week, saying, "I abducted your girls! By Allah, I will sell them in the marketplace!" "This is a clear case of mismanagement of a small group of bandits who have been allowed to really grow into a monstrous terrorist organization that we now have," Atiku Abubakar, former vice president of Nigeria, told Sky News.The search has been made more difficult by the lack of information regarding the girls' possible whereabouts, with speculation suggesting that they have been split into four groups, with some believed to have been taken across Nigeria's border. Sky News reports that militants have likely laid booby traps and land mines to prevent searchers from finding the girls. The Austin, Texas, company Freescale Semi-Conductor had 20 international employees on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. When the lives of workers are lost in a tragedy like this, a wave of aftereffects sweep through the company, affecting morale, productivity, the emotional health of workers, and operations. By approaching employee death in a proactive, thoughtful, and caring way, the company helped minimize those negative effects, but has done less impressively in some areas. Early Response Was Smart and Caring

It was March 8 when Flight MH370 and the 239 people on board went missing. By March 24, it was clear that the plane crashed in the southern Indian Ocean and no one could have survived. As soon as the flight was reported missing, the company’s CEO Gregg Lowe announced, “At present, we are solely focused on our employees and their families. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this tragic event.” Freescale assembled a team of counselors and other professionals to help coworkers cope with the loss through the company’s Employee Assistance Program.The company wisely used its Facebook page to reach out in a more personal way, posting on March 8, “We are deeply saddened about Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. We can confirm that 20 of our Freescale employees were passengers on the flight. Our hearts are with the families of those affected by this tragic event, and we will do our best to help them. Please keep the families of all those on board this flight, and especially our friends and colleagues who were among them, in your thoughts and prayers.” An update on March 19 shows employees wore orange ribbons to signify their hope for those on the flight. An April 2 update expressed its gratitude for the support offered to Freescale families and teams. Each of these posts showed care and concern for those affected by employee death.

Business Concerns Expressed Carefully

In losing many employees at once, Freescale faced some criticism for allowing so many workers to travel on a single flight. But in an interview with Reuters, risk perception writer David Ropeik explained, “When a lot of people are killed all in one place at one time, we spend disproportionate emotional focus on that risk: disproportionate to the probability and to the trade-offs involved in any risk management choice, like spreading these guys out and putting them on a bunch of different airplanes.” It’s simply too inefficient to have employees fly separately. But explaining these difficult choices to staff can be a challenge. The loss of flight MH370 was an exceptionally rare event. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 3 percent of worker deaths are attributed to aircraft incidents annually. Wisely, the company chose not to address this issue with the press.Another important business concern is replacing the highly talented workers lost. According to Tech2, Mitch Haws, the company’s vice president of global communications and investor relations said, “These were people with a lot of experience and technical background and they were very important people. It’s definitely a loss for the company.” Recognizing the importance of those lost was a thoughtful expression of this business concern.

Where Freescale Could Improve

Conspiracy theories surround the missing flight, and some have centered on Freescale’s technologies. This is one area of the company’s response that has failed to honor the lost. Now, six weeks since the flight went missing, the company still has not released the names of those lost. This only adds fuel to the media fire surrounding the flight’s disappearance. By now, the families surely have been notified, so the continued silence only serves to intensify the pain of those who lost coworkers and relatives.Why hasn’t the company used Facebook as a platform to individually honor and profile each employee death? The search for the flight may continue, but the company should offer tributes to the missing employees. Such a public memorial could do much to both offer comfort to the grieving and stave off crass conspiracy theories.

SUBANG: The last Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) C130 Hercules aircraft which took part in the operation to find the missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH370, landed at the Subang RMAF base today at 11am.The arrival of the aircraft, with 11 officers and 13 personnel, was received by RMAF First Air Division Commander, Major-General Datuk Azizool Arif Abdul Ghani, RMAF officers and families of the crew.Met by reporters at a reception ceremony, Azizool Arif said the aircraft left the Pearce Air Force Base in Perth, Australia at 11pm local time on Friday and stopped by in Jakarta, Indonesia, before continuing the journey to the Subang RMAF Air Base."Three C130H from the number 20 RMAF squadron were sent to Perth to join seven countries in the effort to find flight MH370."Two aircraft had departed on March 28 while another on April 5. The two aircraft have returned home on April 30 with 19 officers and 35 personnel," he said.He said they had shown a committed teamwork during the 42 days of the operation. Meanwhile, Zubaidah Zahri, 41, the wife of pilot Major Mohammad Jafri Subuh, said she was thankful her husband had returned home safely.Flight MH370 with 227 passengers and 12 crew left the KL International Airport at 12.41am for Beijing, China on March 8 before going off the radar an hour later.On March 24, 17 days after the Boeing 777-200ER aircraft had gone missing, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced that flight MH370 had ended in the southern Indian Ocean.

PARIS: Paris prosecutors have launched a judicial investigation for involuntary homicide following the Malaysia Airlines plane crash, a judicial source said Friday.The probe was launched on Wednesday. Four French nationals were among the passengers, including three students from the French school in Beijing, and the mother of two of the pupils.The aircraft disappeared on March 8 with 239 people on board and an intense search for the plane has been scaled back after coming up with nothing despite an air and sea hunt over 4.64 million square kilometres of the southern Indian Ocean.The Malaysian government has been roundly criticised for the manner it responded to the crash and the way it conducted search operations.

Senior Ministers from Australia, Malaysia and China met today to discuss the way forward for the new phase of the search for MH370.Australia's Deputy Prime Minister, the Honourable Warren Truss MP chaired the meeting with the Malaysian Minister of Defence and Acting Minister of Transport, Mr Hishamuddin Bin Tun Hussein and the Chinese Minister of Transport, Mr Yang Chuantang on the status of the search for MH370 and future plans for the search.Ministers acknowledged the outstanding work and contribution of the 26 nations who have helped thus far; from the South China Sea to the Straits of Malacca, the Andaman Sea, the northern and southern corridors and now the southern Indian Ocean.Ministers reiterated their utmost appreciation to the 5 nations, besides Australia, Malaysia and China, that have provided assets and personnel: Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, for their commitment and dedication in the operations in the southern Indian Ocean, off the West Australian coast. Following the extensive surface search, Ministers confirmed that the search will be a continuous effort with the operation entering a new phase that will now be focused on intensifying the search of the ocean floor over a larger area.While we are preparing for this new phase, dedicated vessels from Australia, Malaysia and China will continue maritime operations to maintain continuity and momentum, with the Bluefin-21 submersible continuing to be deployed, and an Australian aircraft on standby.These activities will include analysis of all available data to refine the best search area; acquisition of bathymetric analysis capability to survey the search area; and acquisition of sub-surface search assets to scan the entire agreed search area.The meeting reiterated that Australia will continue to assist Malaysia in the search efforts for MH370. Steps are currently being undertaken by Australia and Malaysia to conclude a more comprehensive agreement that would clearly define the responsibilities of both Parties for aspects of the search and recovery task and, in particular, financial responsibilities for any contracting of commercial search and recovery capabilities by the Parties.Malaysia has established an International Investigation Team which also includes representatives from Australia and China to evaluate, investigate and determine the actual cause of the incident so similar incidents could be avoided in the future. Accordingly, the wreckage and flight recorders data (blackbox) once recovered, shall be managed in accordance with the International Civil Aviation Organisation international convention.A plan was also discussed for a refocused and intensified sub-surface search as part of the arrangements to transition to a new phase in the search for MH370 and reconfirmed the ongoing international maritime search capability.Ministers agreed to continue senior level discussions on the arrangements for engaging specialist commercial services and equipment to commence a new sub-surface search.Ministers also discussed the level of ongoing support to the search and agreed to identify the relevant assets based on upcoming discussions.Ministers unreservedly acknowledged the paramount importance of doing everything possible for the families of the passengers and crew. Ministers agreed to a proposed reception programme for any planned visit for the next of kin to Perth. In the event of confirmation of the final resting place of MH370, or identification of debris related to MH370, it was agreed that:any visit will take place between two to four weeks after confirmation; Australia will provide support and information to the next of kin in terms of entry requirements to ensure their travel into and out of Australia are well taken care of; the Western Australian Government will take a lead role in organising rituals and services according to their traditions and religions, and facilitate arrangements for basic needs of the next of kin during their stay in Australia;Malaysia Airlines will be responsible for travel arrangements for the next of kin from Malaysia and all other countries. The airline will also retain broad responsibility for their support during the visit including flights, accommodation, transportation and family support;China will actively facilitate and support matters relating to the Chinese next of kin.Ministers reiterated the positive and productive nature of the joint communications to date and will continue to maintain this strong collaborative approach in the future. Ministers also emphasized that the families of the passengers and crew and the general public will continue to be updated on the development and outcome of the search operation.To support this, the Joint Agency Coordination Centre will be relocated from Perth to Canberra to ensure ongoing close communication with high level representatives of Malaysia and China. However, the base of operations will remain in Perth.
