US leaders, up to and including President Barack Obama, are merely “paying lip service” when they talk of the military option against Iran, said Tzachi Hanegbi, a leading Likud Knesset member who is one of Prime Minister Benjamin Nentayahu’s closest confidants.When Netanyahu threatens the use of force if all else fails to stop Iran, said Hanegbi, “he’s not making empty threats.” By contrast, “When the speaker is [Secretary of State] Kerry or the White House spokesperson, or even the president and other people, you see that they’re just paying lip service.”The Americans are full of “good intentions,” they have military systems prepared and deployed for tackling the Iranian nuclear program, and it’s clear that Obama understands that the way Iran’s rogue nuclear program is handled will be central to his legacy, Hanegbi told The Times of Israel. Nonetheless, he said, that did not guarantee that the US would show the necessary decisiveness in negotiations with the Iranians.Hanegbi, 56, who sits on the Knesset’s powerful Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, has served in the past as the chairman of that committee and as minister of intelligence and nuclear affairs.In an extensive interview in his Knesset office last week, during which he noted that “I am very close to Netanyahu,” he said he had no doubt that, if all else fails, Israel is militarily capable of setting back the Iranian program, and that nobody credible “doubts Israel’s ability” to do so.

He elaborated: “People have doubts about the outcome [of Israeli military intervention], how long [its effects] will last and what the Iranian response will be… There are many variables and unknowns that I cannot foresee either… [But] none of these considerations is powerful enough for me to be willing to live under the threat of a nuclear Iran… The weight of all of these considerations combined, of all of the possible negative developments, does not even come close to [the cost of] accepting Iran as a nuclear power.”Asked repeatedly whether he thought the time had come to attack, Hanegbi was politely evasive. “There are things that one can think but not say aloud,” he offered, then added later, “I’m lucky, because I don’t make the decision.”He said the Iranians “generally believe that America is their problem, not Israel… They belittle Israel and do not believe that Israel has the power, the courage or the ability” to confront them. In fact, though, said Hanegbi, “nothing will prevent Netanyahu from doing what he believes is right. And he considers this to be the greatest historical mission that he has been given… to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power.”Addressing reports that the prime minister had wanted to strike Iran in the recent past, Hanegbi said nothing would have stopped him — not pressure from the US, from Israel’s security chiefs, or from anywhere else. “If he had thought that military action was crucial at the time, he would have acted. He most likely decided not to because there are great advantages to waiting until Israel comes as close as possible to the limits of its tolerance,” Hanegbi said.Hanegbi, 56, a long-time Likud MK, who left the party to join Kadima and then returned to Likud ahead of January’s elections, acknowledged Israel does not have the means to prevent a deal being done in the US-led negotiations with Tehran that would see sanctions eased while the centrifuges keep on spinning. What Israel is doing, he said, is making plain that it could not be reconciled to such an arrangement.New Iranian President Hassan Rouhani “is trying to undo the damage that [his predecessor Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad did over the past eight years, and to create a type of openness. All this has a purpose, one that he has stated — to remove the sanctions while the centrifuges continue to spin,” Hanegbi said. “Israel does not have the ability to prevent Iran from reaching those goals [at the negotiating table]; it’s just trying to make it clear that these goals are unacceptable to us.”

Hanegbi said he was certain that Rouhani’s election victory in June had come as a surprise to Supreme Leader Ayatolah Khamenei. “Khamenei let him run, but assumed that one of the candidates closer to his approach would be elected,” he said. But Khamenei chose not to intervene because he and the regime “recognized that there was constructive potential, so long as Rouhani was loyal to the central positions.”
Iran’s leaders “know how to intervene if they want to,” Hanegbi said dryly. “Evidently they decided the price of intervention was not worth paying; that things would work out. Although the original plan didn’t work out, they recognized that this was also a positive result and they allowed [Rouhani] to lead what we call his charm offensive. They see it’s effective, so they are certainly happy.”

Judge halts Morsi trial after protests by defiant ex-president

CAIRO — The trial of Mohammed Morsi was adjourned twice early Monday morning after the ousted Egyptian president refused to wear prison clothes and declared himself the legitimate leader of the country.
The trial will resume January 8, giving defense lawyers time to review documents.Morsi told the court trying him for inciting violence and murder that he remains the “legitimate president” of the country.The officials said Morsi also said he rejected the proceedings against him. The defiant remarks came shortly after Morsi’s trial began in Cairo on Monday.The officials, who are inside the courtroom, spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the proceedings.The officials say Morsi’s comments came in response to a judge calling his name out after identifying him as a “defendant.”Morsi replied: “I am Dr. Mohammed Morsi, the president of the republic. I am Egypt’s legitimate president.”He further said, “I refuse to be tried by this court.”“I see the judiciary as a cover for the treacherous coup,” the former president added, according to the Saudi news outlet Al-Arabiya.The judge earlier suspended the trial over Morsi’s refusal to wear the white prison uniform all defendants must wear.The session later got underway, though it was not immediately known how the issue of Morsi’s attire was resolved, but the proceedings were soon adjourned because the defendants — Morsi and 14 other Muslim Brotherhood figures — started chanting and disrupted the hearing. The adjournment, ordered by presiding judge Ahmed Sabry Youssef, was likely to last till later on Monday.Al-Ahram, a news outlet with close ties to the regime, reported that the trial was suspended after the defendants chanted from a cage, “Down with the military rule.”He could face the death penalty if convicted.Morsi arrived by helicopter earlier Monday morning at a Cairo police academy where his trial is being held, his first public appearance since the July 3 coup that ousted him from power.The trial is fraught with risks and comes amid a highly charged atmosphere in a bitterly polarized nation, with a deepening schism between Morsi’s Islamist supporters in one hand and Egypt’s security establishment and the nation’s moderate Muslims, secularists, Christians and women on the other.Police are expected to deploy 20,000 officers for extra security to patrol the streets as the trial gets underway.In a last-minute change, authorities on Sunday switched the location of Morsi’s trial, a move apparently aimed at thwarting mass rallies planned by the Muslim Brotherhood, a group from which Morsi hails.Security was tight around the trial’s venue, a police academy in an eastern Cairo district, with hundreds of black-clad riot police backed by armored vehicles deployed around the sprawling complex. Several armored vehicles were deployed too. The final stretch of road leading to the academy was sealed off, with only authorized personnel and accredited journalists allowed to approach the facility.Several hundred Morsi supporters gathered outside the police academy, carrying posters of the ousted president and banners depicting an open palm with four fingers — the symbol commemorating a pro-Morsi sit-in that was violently cleared by security forces in August. They also chanted slogans against Gen. Since his ouster in the July popularly backed coup, Morsi has been held at a secret military location with little communication to the outside world.During four months of detention, Morsi has been extensively questioned and has not been allowed to meet with lawyers. Virtually his only contact with the outside world was two phone calls with his family. N. Korea, Iran 'Pledge Continued Cooperation' Over Nuke Program

On Saturday it was revealed that Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, met with North Korean delegates visiting Tehran in early August, and in the meeting promised to continue cooperation on nuclear missile development.The North Koreans were visiting to attend Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's swearing-in ceremony. Japanese-language Kyodo News Agency broke the news on Sunday, citing a diplomatic source knowledgeable in Iran's internal affairs.According to the Bangkok Post, North Korean concerns that Rouhani's perceived conciliatory position might threaten military cooperation with Pyongyang were assuaged by Jafari, who told them the Revolutionary Guards are not subordinate to the president but rather to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khameini.He reportedly reassured them that cooperation on "strategic matters," such as nuclear missiles, would continue.In early October, Iran's state run PressTV reported that Iran's Vice President met with the visiting North Korean Labor Minister and expressed the desire to "see relations between the two countries expand in all areas."The ongoing cooperation belies Rouhani's "charm offensive" in wooing the West to ease sanctions on Iran, and reveals that the danger of Iranian and North Korean nuclear missiles remains as real as ever.On Sunday, former UN Ambassador John Bolton gave an interview on WABC radio in which he stressed that Israel does not have much time to make a "fateful decision" about whether to strike Iran's nuclear sites or allow it to become an existential threat.Bolton significantly remarked, "frankly, they should have done this years ago because we all know intelligence is imperfect and Iran may have a more developed capacity than we know about, perhaps in cooperation with North Korea.”As for American involvement, Former US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta released statements this week suggesting that the US may have to use military force on Iran.
However, Bolton expressed skepticism about a US military action against Iran's nuclear program, warning “it isn’t going to happen under the Obama administration. I’ll just say it again. It isn’t going to happen.”

Dear Ayatollah Khamenei, Jesus Christ loves you. But judgment is coming, the Bible warns in Jeremiah 49:34-39. Let me explain.

We are hearing reports that you may be in poor health. I hope this is not true, but either way I want you to know that I am praying for the God of the Bible to heal and comfort you. I am also praying that God will open your eyes and grant you repentance that you may receive Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord and have eternal life. In addition, I am asking Christians around the world to pray for you, as well.
Allow me to take a moment to share with you two very important truths, that I recently shared via Twitter with President Rouhani, whom I am also praying for:

First, the Bible makes clear that God loves all the people of the world, including the people of Iran.
The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob loves Persians. Jesus Christ loves you. He loves all Muslims. He wants to forgive you and your people and save you and adopt you and your family into His family to be His children and to go to heaven forever and ever.The Lord Jesus Christ said, “For God so loves the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16).Anyone who truly repents and receives Christ by faith as Savior and Lord will be saved. “But as many as received Him [Christ], to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.” (John 1:12) This is the Gospel, the good news.

Second, the Bible also warns that judgment is coming to the Iranian regime in the last days.
Speaking of “Elam,” an ancient name for the nation we know today as Iran, the prophet Jeremiah wrote: “That which came as the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying: ’Thus says the Lord of hosts, “Behold, I am going to break the bow of Elam, the finest of their might.  I will bring upon Elam the four winds from the four ends of heaven, and will scatter them to all these winds; and there will be no nation to which the outcasts of Elam will not go.  So I will shatter Elam before their enemies and before those who seek their lives; and I will bring calamity upon them, even My fierce anger,” declares the Lord, “And I will send out the sword after them Until I have consumed them. Then I will set My throne in Elam and destroy out of it king and princes,” declares the Lord. “But it will come about in the last days that I will restore the fortunes of Elam,” declares the Lord.’” (Jeremiah 49:34-39)
The prophet tells us that there is coming a day when the Lord will have “fierce anger” against “the king and princes” of Iran and “will bring calamity upon them.”When will this judgment come? I cannot say for certain.
But in the name of Jesus Christ, I urge you to take these and all the Scriptures to heart. I implore you embrace God’s love, repent of your sins, and receive Christ as Savior and Lord by faith.More Iranians have left Islam and come to faith in Christ since 1979 than at any time in the last 14 centuries. More than one million Iranian Muslims have become Christians in the last three decades.I pray that you will become one of them. Time may be short. Do not delay.“Behold, now is ‘the acceptable time,’ behold, now is ‘the Day of Salvation,’” says the Bible. (2 Corinthians 6:2)I recently gave an address explaining God’s love for the people of Iran, and explaining the prophecy of Jeremiah 49 concerning the people of Elam (Iran). My prayer is that you will take time to listen to it to understand the prophecy and its implications more fully.

Housing Ministry okays 1,700 new apartments over Green Line

Move likely to increase tension between Jewish Home party, which opposes withdrawal, and chief peace negotiator Livni

The new policy “has led to fast growth in construction starts that now stands at an annual rate of 43,000 [new] apartments, higher than the demand for new apartments each year,” according to Housing and Construction Minister Uri Ariel.Ariel promised to further increase the rate of construction of new apartments “throughout the country… in order to bring about a dramatic change in the cost of apartments.”While the ministry’s announcement focused solely on housing costs, its timing was conspicuously political, coming in the middle of escalating strife between justice minister and chief peace negotiator Tzipi Livni (Hatnua) and Economy and Trade Minister Naftali Bennett, who heads the Jewish Home party that opposes withdrawal from the West Bank in the framework of peace talks.Ariel is a senior member of the Jewish Home party.
The ministry granted approval to 387 housing units in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo and another 311 in the capital’s Gilo neighborhood. Both areas lie over the Green Line.In the West Bank, the ministry approved land for 284 apartments in Elkana, 196 in Karnei Shomron, 114 in Ma’aleh Adumim, 102 in Givat Ze’ev, 238 in Beitar Illit, 80 in Geva Binyamin (also known as Adam), and 18 apartments in the northern West Bank town of Ariel.

Iranian supreme leader calls Israel ‘bastard regime’

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei says he is skeptical of nuclear talks but that his negotiators should not be undermined

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called Israel “a bastard regime” Sunday, while expressing skepticism over the current round of international talks on Iran’s nuclear program.His words came two days before Iran and six world powers are set to resume talks on curbing uranium enrichment, with hopes for a rare breakthrough after years of no progress.“The Zionist regime is an illegitimate and bastard regime,” Khamenei said via his website, according to an AFP report. He added that the Americans “have to” have the “highest indulgence towards the Zionists,” but Iran does not “share such indulgence.”Iran and world powers are to start a two-day meeting on Thursday in Geneva about Tehran’s nuclear program. The West suspects Iran is developing weapons technology. Iran denies it, saying its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
The negotiators “are on a difficult mission and nobody should weaken those who are on assignment,” the official IRNA news agency quoted Khamenei as saying, in a show of support for President Hassan Rouhani’s policy of outreach to the West.Khamenei has final say on all matters of state, but has seemingly given Rouhani and his cabinet a free hand to pursue talks with the West.He made the comment during an address to students marking the anniversary of the Iranian takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran in 1979.
“I am not optimistic about the outcome of the talks but… we will not be hurt by carrying out negotiations,” the supreme leader said, adding that the US should not be trusted because even though the Americans “express interest” in discussions, they “keep smiling on one hand, and then immediately say they have all options on the table” — in a reference to a potential military strike on Iran.Khamenei also praised Iranian militant students who stormed the US embassy in 1979, sparking a crisis that contributed significantly to the bitterness between the two countries.“Thirty years ago, our young people called the US Embassy a ‘den of spies’… It means our young people were 30 years ahead of their time,” he said, a reference to a series of reports of US eavesdropping on foreign leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel.Hard-line factions have pledged to stage a major anti-US rally November 4, the anniversary of the takeover. The date is marked each year by gatherings outside the former embassy’s brick walls, which are covered with anti-American murals. But the fervor has waned in recent years, with authorities bringing school children by bus to help fill out the crowds. John Kerry in Egypt on first visit since Morsi ouster

Weeks after cutting aid, US secretary of state to press Cairo’s military rulers to implement reforms, elections

CAIRO (AP) — US Secretary of State John Kerry was in Cairo on Sunday pressing for reforms during the highest-level American visit to Egypt since the ouster of the country’s first democratically elected president.
The Egyptian military’s removal of Mohammed Morsi in July followed by a harsh crackdown on his protesting supporters led the US to suspend hundreds of millions of dollars in aid.At a joint news conference following a meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy, Kerry said that the suspension of aid to Egypt is not a punishment but a legal requirement after the Egyptian military in July toppled the democratically elected government.Kerry said the topic was mentioned only briefly in his meeting with Fahmy and that he believed Egyptian authorities understood that rationale.While acknowledging that Egypt had faced “difficult challenges” and “turbulent years,” including in its relationship with the US, he urged Egyptians to continue their “march to democracy.” The US is a friend and partner to the Egyptian people and wants to contribute to the country’s success, Kerry said.Fahmy said Kerry’s comments and the roadmap Egypt’s military chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi laid out following the military coup indicate that “we are all pursuing a resumption of normal relations.”The roadmap includes amending the Islamist-tilted constitution adopted under Morsi last year, holding a national referendum before the end of the year and parliamentary and presidential elections by the spring of 2014.The State Department apparently expected a frosty reception for Kerry, especially with tensions running high on the eve of Monday’s scheduled start of Morsi’s trial on charges of inciting murder. The department refused to confirm Kerry’s visit until he landed in Cairo, even though Egypt’s official news agency reported the impending trip three days earlier.The secrecy was unprecedented for a secretary of state’s travel to Egypt, for decades one of the closest US allies in the Arab world, and highlighted the deep rifts today between Washington and Cairo.Kerry last was in Egypt in March, when he urged Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood-backed government to enact sweeping economic reforms and govern in a more inclusive manner. Those calls went unheeded. Simmering public unhappiness with his rule boiled over when the powerful Egyptian military deposed Morsi on July 3 and established an interim government.The Obama administration was caught in a bind over whether to condemn the ouster as a coup and cut the annual $1.3 billion in US military assistance that such a determination would legally require.The US waffled for months before deciding last month to suspend most big-ticket military aid such as tanks, helicopters and fighter jets, while declining to make a coup determination. The US also is withholding $260 million in budget support to the government.Egypt is receiving billions of dollars in aid from wealthy Gulf Arab states such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. But Egyptian authorities reacted angrily to the US aid suspension, declaring it a new low point in ties that have been strained since the popular revolt that unseated authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.Egypt’s foreign minister, Nabil Fahmy, said last month that US-Egyptian relations were in “turmoil” and warned that the strain could affect the entire Middle East.
With US influence ebbing, Kerry’s message about the importance of economic and constitutional reforms was expected to be met with suspicion, if not outright hostility, by Egyptian leaders and a population deeply mistrustful of Washington’s motives. Many Egyptians accuse the Obama administration of taking sides in their domestic political turmoil; American officials adamantly deny it.Kerry began his Cairo day stop with a meeting with Fahmy. Later he is to see el-Sissi; the interim president, Adly Mansour, and civic leaders. Kerry intended to underscore the necessity of democratic transition through a transparent and inclusive constitutional process, and free and fair parliamentary and presidential elections.Only once progress is made on those, American officials say, will the US consider restoring the suspended aid. They say Kerry is eager to assure Egyptians that the US considers Egypt an important friend and bulwark of regional stability, notably because of its peace treaty with Israel.An initial administration attempt at outreach to post-Morsi Egypt — providing $60 million to spur private investment in Egypt’s flailing economy — has been held up in Congress.
US officials traveling with Kerry said he also would stress the importance of human rights, particularly freedom of the press and assembly, and the role of civil society in ensuring a pluralistic society.Kerry’s visit comes at a critical time in Egypt’s tense and fractured domestic political situation.On Friday, a private Egyptian television station halted the airing of the latest episode of a widely popular political satire program after it came under fire for mocking the ultranationalist, pro-military fervor gripping the country. The show’s host, Bassem Youssef, is often compared to US comedian Jon Stewart. The broadcaster said Youssef and his producer violated its editorial policies.Also, Morsi’s trial was set to begin Monday, a day after Kerry’s scheduled departure.Morsi supporters planned widespread protests on the day of the trial. Security concerns were so high that the venue for the trial was not yet formally announced. It was expected to be held in a heavily secured police academy in Cairo.US officials said the timing of the trial and Kerry’s visit were purely coincidental, but that Kerry was likely to impress on his hosts the importance of due process and transparency in all judicial proceedings.Egypt was Kerry’s first stop on a nine-day tour of the Middle East and Europe. The trip is widely seen as a damage control mission to ease disagreements between the US and its friends over Syria, Iran and the revelations of widespread US surveillance activities around the globe.
From Egypt, Kerry planned to travel to Saudi Arabia, Poland, Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria and Morocco.

NSA tracked Israeli drones, missiles, papers show

Documents seen by The New York Times also reveal sharing of raw intelligence between Washington and Jerusalem

US spies shared information garnered through eavesdropping with Jerusalem, but also secretly tracked Israeli military actions, new papers on the breadth of Washington’s intelligence gathering activities revealed Sunday morning.The documents from Washington’s National Security Agency, leaked to the Guardian by whistleblower Edward Snowden and published in The New York Times, reveal how American agents have spied on leaders from Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.And for the first time, the papers also reveal that Israel, along with nearly every other country on the planet, has been the target of NSA spying.According to the papers, thousands of which were leaked by Snowden, the NSA has tracked “high priority Israeli military targets.”These include unmanned aerial vehicles and the Black Sparrow missile system, a ballistic missile used as target practice for the Arrow missile-defense system.Energy and Water Resources Minister Silvan Shalom told Israel Radio he was not surprised to hear that the US had been spying on Israel, and that defense officials knew as well. He said he was warned not to discuss sensitive matters on the phone when he became a minister, under the assumption that his calls were being listened to.
In late October, former Mossad head Danny Yatom told the Maariv daily the US had spied on Israel in the past.“I can tell you with certain knowledge that [America] has been listening in on its allies, including Israel,” Yatom said, and “not necessarily in [Benjamin] Netanyahu’s tenure” as prime minister.The NSA documents also confirm that the US shared intelligence information with Israel’s signal intelligence unit, known as Unit 8200, which received raw materials from the Americans.The Guardian had originally reported on this revelation in early September, also based on documents leaked by Snowden.“Raw Sigint includes, but is not limited to, unevaluated and unminimized transcripts, gists, facsimiles, telex, voice and Digital Network Intelligence metadata and content,” the British paper quoted a 2009 memorandum of understanding between Israel and the US reading.An NSA document leaked by Snowden in late August listed Israel as one of several “priority targets,” including Cuba, China, Russia and Iran.Revelations over NSA spying have served to strain relations with the US and allies around the world, especially amid revelations that leaders’ phones were tapped, along with those of millions of foreign citizens.US President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, who arrives in the region on Sunday, have been trying to quell international anger over disclosures of classified information by former National Security Agency contractor Snowden. Longer term, Snowden’s revelations about NSA tactics — that allegedly include tapping up to 35 world leaders’ cellphones — threaten to undermine US foreign policy in a host of areas.Spying among allies is not new. Madeleine Albright, secretary of state during the Clinton administration, recently recalled being at the United Nations and having the French ambassador ask her why she said something in a private conversation that the French had apparently intercepted. The French government protested revelations this week that the NSA had collected 70.3 million French-based telephone and electronic message records in a 30-day period.

Israel to US: Syria raid leak ‘endangers our national security’

Jerusalem reportedly conveys bitter protests to White House, Pentagon, CIA for confirming that IAF hit missile shipment; ‘embarrassed’ administration has yet to respond

Israel conveyed a series of bitter protests to the White House and to others in the US administration over the weekend over the Obama administration’s confirmation that it was the Israeli Air Force that struck a military base near the Syrian port city of Latakia last Wednesday.Israel has not acknowledged carrying out the strike, one of half a dozen such attacks widely ascribed to Israel in recent months, but an Obama administration official told CNN on Thursday that Israeli warplanes had indeed attacked the Syrian base, and that the target was “missiles and related equipment” set for delivery to Hezbollah in Lebanon.This US confirmation, which was not the first case of the administration leaking word of Israeli strikes in Syria, risked causing a flare-up that could “endanger the security of Israel and the region as a whole,” Israel claimed in its protest messages to the US according to a report in the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper on Sunday.Israel’s fury was conveyed directly to the White House, as well as during meetings and conversations between senior Israeli officials and their US counterparts in the Pentagon, the CIA and the State Department, the report said.Israel’s shocked complaints produced no American explanation or reaction whatsoever, the report went on, which Israeli officials ascribe to embarrassment on behalf of the administration. Israel believes the leaks may be “a consequence of negligence.”Jerusalem was said to be baffled as to why the Americans would repeatedly leak word of Israeli raids in Syria, when there were all manner of back channels by which the US could convey concern over such strikes if it wanted to do so. In fact, as far as Israel is aware, the report said, “the United States does not have complaints about such Israeli activities.”Israeli officials stressed that Israel was still not confirming responsibility for the strike last Wednesday.Israel’s Channel 10 TV on Friday night quoted Israeli officials branding the American leak as “scandalous.” For Israel’s ally to act in such a way was “unthinkable,” the officials were quoted as saying.A second TV report, on Israel’s Channel 2, said the leak “came directly from the White House,” and noted that “this is not the first time” that the administration has compromised Israel by leaking information on such Israeli Air Force raids on Syrian targets.It said some previous leaks were believed to have come from the Pentagon, and that consideration had been given at one point to establishing a panel to investigate the sources, but that Thursday’s leak had come directly from the White House.Channel 2′s military analyst, Roni Daniel, said the Obama administration’s behavior in leaking the information was unfathomable.Daniel noted that by keeping silent on whether it carried out such attacks, Israel was maintaining plausible deniability, so that Syria’s President Bashar Assad did not feel pressured to respond to the attacks.But the US leaks “are pushing Assad closer to the point where he can’t swallow these attacks, and will respond.” This in turn would inevitably draw further Israeli action, Daniel posited, and added bitterly: “Then perhaps the US will clap its hands because it will have started a very major flare-up.”

Channel 2 speculated that the US might have leaked word of Israel’s attack as a warning to Israel to desist from such actions. Alternately, it might be seeking to signal that it was part of the tough policy designed to prevent a flow of sophisticated weaponry to Assad. But these and other possible explanations simply didn’t justify the leak, which the TV report described as “illogical” and “foolish.”Jerusalem’s reported anger with the White House over the leak coincided with efforts by the administration to assure Israel that it is holding to a tough line on Syria and in the effort to thwart Iran’s nuclear program, and is maintaining its robust military partnership with Israel.On Thursday, the US ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, reiterated America’s commitment to thwarting Iranian nuclear weapons ambitions.“Let me be absolutely clear: President Obama is determined to ensure that the Islamic Republic does not acquire a nuclear weapon,” Power said at the Anti-Defamation League’s centennial conference held Thursday in a Manhattan hotel. Addressing the subject of nuclear negotiations with Iran, she said the Obama administration considers a bad deal worse than no deal and that the administration will not accept a bad deal.Later Thursday, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel told the same gathering that the US is testing Iran’s diplomatic intentions but remains “clear-eyed” on Iran’s role as a state sponsor of terror and exporter of extremism.Hagel also announced that the US will fast-track delivery of six advanced Osprey helicopter-airplanes to Israel. “Israel will get six V-22s out of the next order to go on the assembly line, and they will be compatible with other [Israeli defense] capabilities,” Hagel said, anticipating delivery in two years’ time. NBC News said Israel requested that the delivery of the Ospreys be expedited because of threats from Iran and Syria.Hagel added that “the Israeli and American defense relationship is stronger than ever, and it will continue to strengthen.” Nonetheless, the ADL’s national director Abraham Foxman, who has close ties to the Israeli leadership, told the conference that American wariness of foreign military involvement is making it seem “weak and retreating.” In unusually bitter comments, Foxman declared, “The combination of America’s unsatisfactory involvement in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, together with the financial crisis at home, have generated a broader opposition to American military involvement overseas.”

Citing among other developments the recent congressional resistance to authorizing a strike on Syria, Foxman said: “America is being seen as weak and retreating… The world looks at our choices, looks at our public opinion polls, looks at congressional reactions, looks at the paralysis in Washington on budgeting matters and wonders.”The perception of weakness could harm US efforts to get Iran to end its nuclear push, Foxman warned. “I hope that we get our act together.”Israel has been accused of striking Syrian sites several times in the recent past, including in January and May of this year.The Associated Press contributed to this report.
