I TOTALLY AGREE WITH GARY KAH AND ALL THE OTHER PROPHESY EXPERTS THAT BELIEVE THAT NEW YORK CITY AND AMERICA IS POLITICAL BABYLON OF REVELATION CHAPTER 18.

There are a number of reasons for believing that New York – and the superpower it represents – is actually “the great city” referred to as Babylon the Great (Mystery Babylon) in Revelation. However, before continuing, please go to your Bible and read Revelation 17 and 18. This will help you correlate the information in these biblical prophecies with the following insights.

●The city described in these passages represents the greatest economic superpower to have ever existed. New York, the hub for America’s commerce and global trade currently does the highest volume of business of any city in the world. The entire world comes to New York to buy and sell. Businessmen from all nations have become incredibly wealthy through America’s immense purchasing power. If America goes down it would indisputably affect the global economy more than the demise of any other nation and would line up with Revelation 18:6 which states that the merchants of the earth had grown rich from her excessive luxuries; and verse 11 that indicates the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her ruin because she can no longer buy their products. Although another greater economic superpower could possibly still emerge, if this prophecy is to be fulfilled within the near future it has to be referring to New York and the United States. No other power currently fits the description.

●It is also clear from these chapters that the kings (political leaders) of the earth have a special relationship with this great city (17:2 & 18:3); so much so that when they witness her destruction, they weep and mourn over her ruin and are terrified at her torment (18:9-10). Chapter 17, verse 18 reveals that she is “the great city that rules over the kings of the earth.” The kings of the earth regularly convene at the United Nations in New York City to make decisions affecting the entire globe. For the time being, the UN is the seat of power for world government; it is attempting to enforce its rule over the seven continents.

●Chapter 18, verse 7 describes this great city and earthly power as being extremely rich and guilty of indulging herself in luxury and self-praise. She is boastful and proud and sees herself as the queen of the world. The fact is the United States regularly boasts that she is the world’s only remaining superpower. Our politicians are quick to call America the greatest nation on earth, possessing the strongest military and the most powerful economy on the planet. While God has ordained our nation to exist and expects us to appreciate its freedoms and privileges, have we ever stopped to think how He must view our constant boasting? God has historically opposed the proud. We, as a nation, have sadly lost the concept of humility before God and man.

●One of the things I discovered while doing research for my book in the 1980s was that our national symbol, the Statue of Liberty, represents the ancient Babylonian goddess of love and fertility named Ishtar. Ishtar is known as the Mother of Harlots because prostitution was first introduced as a religious practice through her temple worship. The goddess Ishtar was worshipped under the name Astarte by the Phoenicians, Canaanites, Aramaeans, South Arabs, and the Egyptians to whom she was also known as Isis. Some Old Testament stories call her Ashtoreth – King Solomon built an altar in her honor which was later destroyed by King Josiah. The Greeks referred to Ishtar as Aphrodite and the Romans knew her as Venus. She was also known in Latin as Libertas from which we derive “liberty.” *

The statue, which is therefore really an idol, was given to America’s Freemasons as a gift from the Freemasons of France – a little known fact of history. Freemasons, by their own admission, trace their origins through the ancient mystery religions to Babylon where organized occult religion began. The Bible frequently refers to mighty empires using symbols. The superpower referred to in Revelation 17 and 18 is symbolically described, among other things, as a woman with some type of Babylonian connection. I believe the Statue of Liberty, as our national symbol, embodies this description.

*(Libertas was referred to by Cicero, the famous Roman historian and senator, as the Mother of Harlots. The concept of “liberty” in ancient times was associated with personal and sexual freedom and with temple prostitution. Addressing this subject, historian Richard A. Coombes writes:

Harlots had been deemed to be social outcasts so she was also referred to as the Mother of Exiles. This was later equated with the idea of immigration. Naturally then Ishtar (a.k.a. – Libertas) was known as the Mother of Harlots, the Mother of Exiles and the Mother of Immigrants throughout not only Babylon and Babylonia but also later Assyria, Egypt, Greece and Rome.

Other interesting facts: According to Coombes, “Ishtar in the most ancient of times was also referred to by the Sumerian dialect as Inanna or Ninanna, meaning the Queen of Heaven or Lady of Heaven.” The same title was given to Isis of Egypt and later to Mother Mary of Roman Catholicism. On a different but related note, some modern-day historians believe the Statue of Liberty was actually erected in honor of Semiramis, a legendary Babylonian queen known for her beauty and sexual excesses who gained goddess-like status during the 9th century B.C.  Coombes, however, vigorously refutes this claim in his extensive writings on the subject. In either case, the statue’s roots are indelibly linked to ancient Babylon.)1

●In the book of Daniel, chapters 7, 8, and 11:2-4, God provides a history of the world’s empires as they relate to Babylon. The Medes and Persians, as well as the Greeks and Romans, would all take their turns conquering Babylon. I believe the apostle John, when penning the book of Revelation, picked up where the prophet Daniel left off – describing the geographical superpower that would conquer and be in control of Babylon (Iraq and vicinity) in the end times, identifying her as “Mystery: Babylon the Great.” This, I believe, is a reference to the United States – birthed by the European countries that were a remnant of the Roman Empire to become the world’s dominant military, political, economic, and cultural force of these last days. (By the way, the ancient empires mentioned in the Bible as having conquered Babylon all had something in common: They were eventually destroyed or conquered by other powers.)

The “mystery” implies that there would be some kind of unique relationship between this end- times superpower and Babylon. The fact that America’s national symbol is Babylonian and was erected by a group (Freemasonry) with Babylonian origins which has risen to become the single most powerful influence in our nation’s politics – when coupled with the fact that the United States has in recent years had a strong military presence and been the dominant occupying power in Iraq and much of the Middle East – makes a valid case for America being Mystery Babylon.

There are other factors to consider as well. The speed of America’s moral decline is unprecedented in history. Those of us who grew up in the 50s and 60s find it difficult to believe we are living in the same country. America was once a choice vessel in God’s hands with more than half of the world’s Christian missionaries going out from the United States. We were a predominantly Christian nation.

Today we live in a post-Christian, interfaith era where the politically-correct norm embraces all religions as pathways to God. We have polluted and prostituted ourselves with other religions and gods.

On the positive side, our country still shows compassion and is quick to come to the aid of the downtrodden, especially in response to natural disasters. There is also still a significant remnant of devoted Christians in our land, whose acts of kindness and obedience are a constant testimony for Christ among unbelievers. Perhaps God has patiently protected America and been merciful to her for these reasons. Yet, at the same time, America has increasingly become a stronghold of greed, corruption and sexual depravity. No one can deny that our culture has become openly and vividly sex-crazed – promoting every sort of pornographic and immoral indulgence imaginable and spreading it to the rest of the world through our motion pictures and the Internet. Is it too brazen to say that the world has committed adultery with the United States?

We haven’t yet considered the fact that over 60 million American babies have been slaughtered in their mothers’ wombs, while the lives of certain unborn animal species are protected under our laws. And what about our nation’s on-going betrayal of Israel, intensifying under the current Obama Administration?

These are just a few of my reasons for believing that America is Mystery Babylon and will be severely judged by God. It is almost unthinkable that the world’s most influential superpower would not be mentioned somewhere in the Bible’s end-times prophecies. I believe America has been in Scripture all along; we simply haven’t wanted to accept the fact that these passages are referring to our beloved country!

Interestingly, during the last ten years or so, as I have stayed in the homes of other researchers and students of the Word while traveling and speaking, I have noticed a dramatic increase in the number of those believing America to be Mystery Babylon. I estimate this figure now to be between 60 and 70 percent of those in our circles who have shared their views with me. Some of these Christians have asked me what I think about Mystery Babylon. When I cautiously share my belief they typically respond with a sigh of relief that they are not alone in arriving at the same conclusion.

The only prophecy describing America in Revelation 17 and 18 that possibly has not yet been fully realized is the one concerning the woman being “drunk with the blood of the saints” (Rev. 17:6 & 18:24). But given today’s growing anti-Christian climate, it is not too difficult to imagine how one day soon this prophecy could be fulfilled. Christians (and Jews) are increasingly becoming targets for persecution. One can see the handwriting on the wall.

America is prophetically significant for still another reason. Like ancient Babylon (which took the Jews captive from the Promised Land), it has become the center for the world’s Jewish population. Approximately one out of every three Jews in the world currently live here – over 6 million in all. More Jews live in New York than in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem combined. Strangely, the United States is the only country with a large Jewish population that has not yet witnessed a major outflux of Jews making Aliyah to Israel. I believe that a great number of these Jews will soon return to Israel in a historic mass exodus, made under difficult circumstances.

It is worth noting that although still relatively small, the number of Jews leaving the United States has increased over the last few years and the momentum is building. Last year, for the first time, more Jews left the US to live in Israel than who left Israel to come to the United States. This is a prophetic sign of the times. More than 50 passages of Scripture foretell the return of God’s covenant people to their homeland in the last days– from all the earth (that includes America).

When and How

When discussing this subject with other Christians I am often asked when I think these prophecies will be fulfilled and what scenario might lead to their fulfillment. I wish I could answer these questions; but only God knows the timing of these prophecies. While extreme natural disasters and “earth-shaking” events will continue to occur in the days ahead as warnings to draw our nation back to God, Revelation 17:16 indicates that the final destruction of Mystery Babylon will come by fire and will not be the result of a natural disaster; and verse 10 of chapter 18 states that this great city’s doom will take place in one hour. This information eliminates many possibilities while offering some clues.

As I have sought to understand how so much devastation could happen so quickly through fire, the following scenario has come to mind:

A strong minority of citizens – weary over government manipulation of our crumbling economy, and having grown tired of the government’s ever-increasing usurpation of our constitutional freedoms through its expansion of power and taxes – may rise up and take to the streets. The growing Tea Party movement could be the beginning of what might eventually lead to an all-out protest/rebellion. (Pressure created by the socialistic Occupy movement – along with economic upheaval, acts of terror, and mounting racial tensions – could all be used by globalists to fan the flames of unrest, ultimately leading to conflict.) If major unrest and turbulence occur I believe the Federal Government, through its Department of Homeland Security and related agencies, would see this as their opportunity to crack down on America’s freedom-loving people, which would include a significant number of Bible-believing Christians and conservative Jews. At this point, our nation would be in the midst of its worst internal crisis since the Civil War. The persecution of Jews and Christians would be severe.

If ever our foreign enemies (Russian, Islamic, and other) were to move against the United States, this time of civil unrest and vulnerability would be their perfect opportunity. The final straw for Russia and radical Islam came when American troops went into Iraq and Afghanistan; they have sought to bring the US down ever since. Along with concern over potential Islamic acts of terror, some in our military are disturbed by the fact that Russian submarines have been regularly spotted along our coasts during the last few years. Are they staking out positions for a possible future attack?

Russia resents America’s status as the world’s only superpower. It has long wanted to be the world’s dominant force; but the United States has stood in the way. If the US could be eliminated as a superpower, Russia, in its thinking, would inevitably become Europe’s dominant military force and, as such, would be in the driver’s seat of a world government centered in Europe and the Middle East. It is no coincidence that Europe’s top globalists and many Islamic despots of terror also happen to be devoted Marxists with ties to Russia.

“Illuminists” (secret society globalists with occult loyalties) have used the United States as an effective vehicle for building their new world order – for developing technological infrastructure such as communication satellites and the Internet, promoting a syncretic global culture, and funding the UN and its various one-world agendas. But once all the pieces have been put in place, if the US itself does not come into their global system peacefully, to them it will be expendable. America, although helpful to their goals on the one hand, has been a thorn in their side on the other. They hate the US for numerous reasons, including the fact that many of its independent-minded citizens have stubbornly resisted globalization and socialism in favor of national sovereignty and free enterprise. Barack Obama and his administration represent what may be their final attempt to bring our country into their new order – by force if necessary.

I envision a time when Russia and its allies – possibly augmented by embedded terror cells – launch a nuclear attack, striking a number of our coastal cities including New York. These population centers would be devastated by fire in one hour, in fulfillment of Scripture. Regardless of how this predicted destruction comes about, Scripture makes clear that although the woman is destroyed by the Beast and his allies (Rev. 17:16), this act comes as a judgment from God (Rev. 17:17; 18:5, 8, 20; and 19:2). Chapter 18, verse 8 declares, “Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her: death, mourning and famine. She will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.”

Russian submarines like this one move freely up and down our coasts.

From these passages it is evident that God will restrain the Beast who hates the woman until the woman’s sin has reached its full measure, at which time God will lift His hand of protection, allowing the Beast to succeed.

God is very patient, but He is also righteous and holy. As with the Israelites of old, He warns a people repeatedly, giving them time to repent of their sins; but if they persist in ignoring His merciful pleas, judgment eventually comes. When it does, it is usually swift and at a time when it is not expected.

Whether the passages in Revelation denote the complete destruction of an entire nation, symbolically represented by its most powerful city, or if they are speaking of a judgment limited to one city or a group of cities, is not specifically known. My personal opinion is that God will bring His judgment against the worst offenders – those cities that were most responsible for leading the people into sin. This was the case with Sodom and Gomorrah. He did not judge the entire region, only those cities of the plain that were responsible. Even in this instance, He left a place of refuge – the small town of Zoar – for Lot and his family (Genesis 19).

Regardless of what areas are eventually brought to ruin, one thing is certain: Since this coming destruction is the result of God’s judgment, only those places that God allows to be targeted will be hit. I hope, and want to believe, this means that major parts of our country will be spared. But, even if this were to be the case, there would still be many unknowns. Such as, what would become of those areas that are not destroyed?

Clearly, life in this country would be drastically different after such an act of judgment. Would the remaining parts of the United States eventually be brought under the authority of the Beast and his foreign troops on our soil; or would God in His mercy allow these areas to be places of refuge during the reign of the Beast – until Jesus Christ returns? Only the Lord knows the complete answer to these questions.

Doing God’s Will

The Lord is slow to anger and abounds in love. He has spared wicked cities in the past, when they have repented of their sins. Nineveh is a prime example. Even though Nineveh was comprised largely of a foreign people (non-Israelites) God cared enough about its inhabitants to send His prophet Jonah to warn them of coming judgment and destruction.

The Ninevites responded by declaring a fast. According to Scripture, all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth – a symbol of humility and repentance. The king and his nobles led the way. They issued a decree calling on everyone to urgently pray to God and to give up their evil ways and violence, hoping that “God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish” (Jonah 3:9). When God saw their humility and how they turned from their evil ways, He responded with compassion and spared the city.

I believe God would do the same for New York and all of America. He is not quick to bring judgment. He only does so after repeated violations and refusals to repent. He would much rather be compassionate and spare our nation. However, for this to happen there must be an immediate national repentance – from our top leaders down to the most common person. We must take the Lord seriously if we want to be spared!

This brings up the next important question: How do we respond if there is no national repentance? I am aware of a sizeable number of Christians who are in the process of relocating their families – and in some cases their ministries – to New Zealand. Others have mentioned Costa Rica, Chile, or various island nations as possible places of refuge. These believers see the persecution of Christians and Jews followed by America’s destruction as being imminent; they take God’s warning in Revelation 18:4 literally. In this passage God declares, Come out of her, my people, so that you will not share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her plagues; for her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her crimes.

Other end-time passages telling God’s people to get out of “the Daughter of Babylon” may be found in Isaiah, Jeremiah and Zechariah. God warns his people (Christians) to flee in Jeremiah 50:8 & 16; 51:6, 9, 45 & 50. On two occasions, He specifically warns Jewish residents of the Daughter of Babylon to flee (Zechariah 2:7 and Isaiah 48:20).

Christians I know who are leaving America have taken into account that the global system of government described in Revelation 13 and 14 will eventually also encompass the nations they are fleeing to. However, they believe they will have more time to function freely as Christians if they are living outside of the United States. They feel they are being obedient to God by leaving.

Others are choosing to stay for now, believing this to be God’s will for their lives. Some individuals we know are involved in preparing places of refuge throughout the US, convinced that God has called them to do so.

We are also blessed to have friends whom God has placed in key positions in our government, military and financial structure. He still has a few “Daniels” in high places. They are doing what they can to make a difference for God where they are.

It is important that we are obedient to whatever God calls us to do. If He leads us to move out of the city we are in, we should do so. If He impresses us to stay where we are for the time being, we should stay. If He prompts us to move completely out of the country, then we should be willing to go. This is a time for serious prayer and diligently seeking God’s will for our lives. Be sensitive to His leading.

I am personally grieved by the state of affairs in our nation. As one who has had a deep love for America from an early age, it has been difficult for me to accept the fact that everything is about to change. My parents came to the United States from Europe – my father from Croatia where he and his family fled from both the Nazis and Communists, and my mother from Germany where she grew up under Hitler’s regime. They both knew hard times. They came to America believing they would indefinitely enjoy her great freedoms. Born in this country, I was raised to cherish our freedoms and to be loyal to our nation’s ideals.

For the past 25 years I, along with others, have sounded the alarm, hoping that people would wake-up, take a stand, and embrace Jesus Christ as the only hope for our nation. Some have, but most have not – bringing us to our present-day reality.

Our family faces the same day-to-day challenges as any other American family. My wife and I have four children. Two of them are still living at home and are preparing for college. In addition, I am responsible for my aging parents who have physical issues. We are in the same boat as many of you. But, no matter how difficult the times, we must remain obedient and faithful to the Lord who will guide our steps and give us the strength to persevere.

We ask the Lord for discernment every day and trust that He will lead us according to his will. If He directs us to leave our city or country, with his help and by his grace we will do what is right.

What God Wants Most

It is important that we deal with this sobering subject in a way that might lead to godly changes in our lives and nation. Perhaps, if the people of America genuinely repent and turn to God, He will yet be merciful and, as with Nineveh, spare our nation and delay its judgment. We must recognize that all of our best efforts to defend our freedoms will fail if they are not accompanied by repentance and submission to God. Taking a stand for our Constitution, regardless of how noble an undertaking, will by itself not earn us favor with the Lord; nor will taking a stand on moral issues, or fighting corruption in politics – even though these are legitimate causes. So, what does the Lord most want and expect from us?

● God wants us to take Him at his word, by believing that we can be saved only through the shed blood of his Son, Jesus Christ. Acts 4:12 tells us there is no other name by which we can be saved. Salvation – a secure eternity with God – is available through no one else. The belief in, or politically-correct acceptance of, any other “gods” and religions must be completely abandoned. We must place our faith and trust in Jesus alone.

● God wants us to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength (Luke 10:27). He desires for us to walk in close fellowship with Him and delight in his presence. We are to seek Him for discernment and guidance while worshipping Him for his goodness, mercy and love. We should look to the Lord to faithfully supply all our needs while continually thanking Him for his provision. We must never forget that everything good in our lives comes from Him, including the freedoms we’ve enjoyed and have so often taken for granted. Most importantly, He has forgiven our sins and given us eternal life. He is truly an awesome God!

Loving the Lord also means that we must avoid making other people more important than Him. We live in a society that is quick to idolize individuals. But God declares, “I will not give My glory to another” (Isaiah 48:11).

In the same way, when praise is directed our way, we must deflect it toward God, making sure He receives the glory for what He accomplishes through us. Paul and Barnabas were excellent examples of living out this act of worship (Acts 14:8-18). Our number one goal in life, like theirs, should be to bring glory to God.

● God wants us to surrender all sin and pursue a holy life to demonstrate our love for Him. Jesus said, “Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him” (John 14:21). In order to please God and enjoy his favor we must live a life of ongoing obedience and repentance. This means beginning each day by renewing our commitment to Christ and turning our back on sin. He longs for us to be overcomers by consistently obeying Him and saying no to the forbidden things of this world.

In short, the Lord wants us to live our lives as an offering to Him. This is how we worship Him and bring Him the glory He deserves. If we truly pursue the Lord, making Him number one in our lives, we will experience his peace, joy, and presence as we look forward to his return. No matter how difficult times become between now and then, we will be able to stand firm and be overcomers through Him (I John 4:4; 5:4, John 14:26-27 & Matthew 28:20b).

God loves mankind – his greatest creation. His perfect will is for all to be saved and none to be lost (John 3:15-18; 5:24). However, He makes clear that only those who have accepted (believed in) his Son, Jesus Christ, will be spared from the punishment of hell and will spend eternity with Him (Matthew 10:28 & II Peter 2:4-10). If you have never accepted Jesus as your Savior, I urge you to do so now. Pray the following words in faith and mean them with all of your heart:

“Lord Jesus, I am a sinner and I need you. I believe that you are the perfect Son of God and died on the cross to pay the penalty for my sins. I receive you now as my Savior. With your help, I repent of my sinful ways. Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life.Amen.”

Now that you’ve accepted Jesus as your personal Savior, ask Him to guide you through His Word (the Bible) and give you the desire and strength to truly love and obey Him. With Jesus at the helm, your life and eternity are secure in his care. No situation or power of the enemy will be able to separate you from the love of Christ!

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?... No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” ― Romans 8:35, 37-39

Conclave is to start on 12 March

The 115 cardinal electors are reday to elect the new Pope

vatican insider staff rome The College of Cardinals' eighth General Congregation has decided that the Conclave for the election of the new Pope will begin on 12 March 2013. This is according to a communiqué issued by the Holy See Press Office. The Mass "Pro Eligendo Pontefice" will be celebrated in St. Peter's Basilica in the morning andf in the afternoon cardinals will begin the Conclave.

The 115 cardinal electors are ready to vote for the new Pope. The average age of the cardinals is 72, most of them were appointed by Benedict XVI and over half of them are European. There are 28 Italian cardinal electors making them the largest group but all five continents are represented.

- AVERAGE AGE 71-72. There are eight cardinals who have either just turned eighty or will turn eighty this year.
 
- KASPER IS THE OLDEST CARDINAL AND THOTTUNKAL IS THE YOUNGEST. The German Walter Kasper turned 80 on 5 March, before the start of the Conclave but after the start of the sede vacante period. Cardinals are eligible to vote up until the age of 80. Severino Poletto and Juan Sandoval Iniguez turn 80 this March. The youngest cardinal elector is the Indian Baselio Cleemis Thottunkal who turns 54 in June. Filipino cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle’s birthday is also in June but he will turn 56. There are three more cardinals under the age of 60: two Germans and one Dutchman.
 
- OVER HALF OF THE CARDINAL ELECTORS ARE EUROPEANS. There are 60 electors representing the Old Continent, followed by Latin America with 19 representatives and North America with 14 (so 33 in total), Africa with 11 and Asia with 10. There is also one Australian, george Pell.

- ITALY HAS THE MOST MEMBERS, FOLLOWED BY THE U.S. Italy is the most represented country in the Conclave, with 28 cardinals. It is followed by the United States, which has 11 cardinal electors and Germany with 6. Spain and Brazil will have five cardinals each representing them in the Sistine Chapel.
 
- 67 OF THE CARDINAL ELECTORS HAVE BEEN CHOSEN BY THE POPE EMERITUS. The majority, 58%, were created cardinals by Benedict XVI. The other 48 were created byJohn Paul II. Paul VI created two of the members of the College of Cardinals but they are over 80 years old so cannot vote in the Conclave.

- 19 RELIGIOUS. The Salesian and Franciscan congregations are the ones with the most representatives in the Conclave - 4 cardinals each. Don Bosco’s followers include Tarcisio Bertone, Angelo Amato, Raffaele Farina and the Honduran, Oscar Maradiaga. The Franciscans are: the Brazilian, Claudio Hummes, the Spaniard, Carlos Amigo Vallejo and the South African, Wilfrid Fox Napier; the American Capuchin friar, Sean Patrick O’Malley, also belongs to this group. There are also two Jesuits, two Dominicans and one Redemptorist, one Lazarist, one Sulpician, the Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate, the Scalabrinians, a Mariamite and a religious from the Schonstatt Fathers.

Scola becomes "papabile" again: The Americans are also with him

ANDREA TORNIELLI vatican city After four days of discussions and six General Congregations, the groups and the strongest "papabili" are emerging more clearly in the meeting room but even more so in the face to face talks taking place away from prying eyes. Among them is the Archbishop of Milan, Angelo Scola, who is coming to the fore. He has been considered one of the possible candidates for the Papal Seat right from the beginning; the votes of several American cardinals and of other European cardinal electors, from Germany to Eastern Europe, as well as those of some Italians, could be cast for him. It is important to remember that thanks to the initiatives of the Oasis Foundation, the Milanese cardinal has interwoven relationships with Eastern Churches as well; for example, with the Lebanese Patriarch Bechara Rai.


Scola was held in particular esteem by Pope Benedict XVI, who transferred him from the Venice to the diocese of Milan. An unprecedented decision considered as a sign by many. And it is no secret that Joseph Ratzinger, endorsing Cardinal Camillo Ruini's suggestion, had also considered him in 2007 for appointment as President of the Italian Episcopal Conference. At that time, it was the newly appointed Secretary of State, Tarcisio Bertone, who objected and the nomination was dropped. Scola is thus perceived as an outsider to the Roman Curia and to the management that has characterized it in recent years. Because of his international renown he could be one of the two strongest candidates from the very first vote in the Conclave that starts next week.The other candidate who, at the moment, is expected to start with a good number of votes is the Brazilian Odilo Pedro Scherer, Archbishop of São Paulo, who has a long curial and Vatican experience and would have the support of some influential Cardinals of the Curia; from the former Prefect of bishops, Giovanni Battista Re, to the Dean Angelo Sodano (who will not enter the Sistine Chapel to vote).We must see how much weight the recent debates, the criticisms over the Curia's management and the desire for renewal will have. And also how many votes will be cast for other candidates such as the Canadian Marc Ouellet, the Hungarian Peter Erdö, the Latin American Bergoglio, Robles Ortega and Rodríguez Maradiaga; and the outsiders Ranijth, Tagle and O'Malley (the latter tied to Scola by mutual esteem).All is possible. But, as early as the second day of the Conclave, the balance could change and, as occurred in the second election of 1978, a surprise could emerge.

Lombardi: “Conclave date to be announced at 7 pm”

I don’t think cardinals will decide to start on Saturday or Sunday,” that is tomorrow. The director of the Holy See Press Office, Fr. Federico Lombardi said this in this morning’s briefing with journalists.
 
Tomorrow morning there will be another round of General Congregations. On Sunday cardinals will hold prayer sessions in their titular churches in Rome.Meanwhile, the College of Cardinals has “accepted” the reasons given by cardinal electors who are going to be absent from the Conclave. Indonesian cardinal Darmaatmadia cannot attend due to illness and Scottish cardinal Keith O’Brien cannot take part for “personal reasons”. “The College has voted and has accepted their reasons of absence.” One of the themes discussed during today’s Congregation (8March) is women’s role in the Church.Over 100 cardinals have spoken in the Congregations. One website is promoting the adoption of cardinals through prayer, with the slogan “adopt a cardinal”. “So far, 220,000 are taking part in this prayer movement” via the website that is assigning cardinals for whom people can pray.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican said Friday the conclave to elect a new pope will likely start in the first few days of next week, signaling that cardinals are coming to an end of discussions about the state of the church and who best among them might lead it.Cardinals will vote Friday afternoon on the opening date of the conclave, a vote made possible by the arrival Thursday of the last of the 115 cardinal electors, Vietnamese Cardinal Jean-Baptiste Pham Minh Man.The Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said it was "likely" the cardinals would choose Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday as the start date for the conclave. In the past 100 years, no conclave has lasted longer than five days.That said, there is no front-runner in this election, and the past week of deliberations has exposed sharp divisions among cardinals about some of the pressing problems facing the church, including of governance within the Holy See itself.Early in the week, the Americans had been pressing for more time to get to the bottom of the level of dysfunction and corruption exposed by the leaks of papal documents last year. President Barack Obama will present a “general framework” for Israeli-Palestinian peace during his visit to Israel and the West Bank in two weeks’ time, Israel’s Channel 10 news reported Thursday night, quoting what it said were remarks made by the president in a pre-visit White House briefing for US Jewish leaders.

He will not unveil a “comprehensive Middle East peace plan” during the trip, the report said, but told the leaders Thursday they should not rule out him doing so “sometime in the next six, nine or 12 months.”

Without such a commitment, Abbas would make have to make do with a one-on-one meeting with Obama, the report said.The US was making “immense efforts” to arrange the summit, Channel 10 reported, with efforts now under way to find a formulation that could also satisfy Abbas. There was “a reasonable chance” that the four-way meet would take place.Channel 10 added that Obama’s advance team would arrive in Israel on Sunday to finalize the itinerary for the trip, his first as president, which is set to start on March 20.An Israeli Embassy official in Washington on Wednesday described as “baseless” reports in the Israeli media that Obama might delay his trip should Netanyahu fail to meet a March 16 deadline to form a government.The two leaderships have said they would consult on efforts to thwart Iran’s nuclear drive, the instability in Syria, ways to revive peace talks with the Palestinians, and other vital issues.

Israel is willing to share its knowledge and wisdom with its neighbors and asks only for peace in return, President Shimon Peres said Thursday.Peres comments to the European Commission in Strasbourg, France, were made as he described a greater “start-up region,” a reference to Israel’s moniker, “start-up nation.” The introduction of high-tech regions throughout the Middle East and the sharing of good will, Peres said, will in turn bring peace and stability.Peres described Israel as a harsh place in a harsh region that managed to climb out of the swamp.“We have only two lakes,” Peres said, describing the lack of natural resources faced by Israel. “One is dead. The other is dying. We have one river, the Jordan River, that has more fame than water. We don’t have any natural resources.“We are surrounded by hostility,” the president told the audience. “In 65 years of hostility we’ve had to go through seven wars, outmanned, outgunned, alone and yet we have the best agriculture on earth based on high-tech and the people. We can make one drop of water into three, four, five drops. We can have a yield from an acre that is ten times higher than the rest of the world. No secret.”Israel, Peres said, is ready and willing to share information with its neighbors, as it does with China and India, to create regional prosperity.“We have been a start-up nation. We took science to compensate for our shortages. I believe we can build a start-up region. In a little-noticed exchange Tuesday at the Senate Armed Services Committee, a top US general said he had no doubt Israel would attack Iran if the Islamic Republic reached a critical point in its nuclear weapons drive. Furthermore, said General James Mattis, Israel could so without the assistance of the United States.Mattis, who is retiring this month as head of the US army’s Central Command, which includes the Middle East and North Africa, was responding to questions from Sen. Lindsey Graham, who asked him whether he believed Israel would strike at Iran if the regime “reached a critical point in terms of nuclear capability.” Responded Mattis: “The Israelis have said so; I take them at their word.”Graham followed up by asking whether Israel would need US assistance to carry out such an attack. Said Mattis, “They could conduct a strike without our help.”Asked next whether the US should assist in such an Israeli attack, Mattis said, “That would depend on what the objective of the strike is. Is it to stop them, is it to delay them, is it how long do you want to delay them, is there a broader effort…?”Last summer, the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey, said he would not want to be “complicit” in an Israeli strike on Iran, which could undo US-led international pressure on Iran if carried out prematurely.Graham then asked the general what kind of US attack he would recommend — a limited strike or one that targeted Iran’s navy, air force and Revolutionary Guard. Mattis said that “I owe confidentiality to the president” on that question.Finally, Graham asked him whether a nuclear Iran would lead other regional states to seek similar nuclear capabilities. The IDF is the world's most female-friendly army, statistics released Thursday showed. More than one third of the army's “enlisted men” are women, according to the IDF Spokesperson's office.At 34%, the number of women in the IDF is the highest of any army in the world. The reason, of course, is because women are required to serve in the army, unless they serve in the National Service, as many girls from religious families do. According to many rabbinical sources, women are not permitted to serve as soldiers in uniform, and the National Service program gives them an opportunity to serve their country, working in hospitals, schools, and other institutions that are often short-handed.Of all 18 year old females in Israel, the IDF Spokesperson said, 59% enlist in the IDF. Ninety two percent of all positions in the army are open to women (with only a few that require extraordinary physical strength off-limits). Women comprise 57% of the IDF's officer corps among regular soldiers, and 28% of career officers. Of the top officer positions (lieutenant and higher) women comprised 15% of the total officers.There was notable rise in the number of female soldiers who were on duty during the recent Pillar of Defense Operation, as compared to 2008's Operation Cast Lead, the spokesperson said. More of those women have been serving in battlefield roles; over the past few years there has been a significant drop in the numbers of women assigned to secretarial and clerk roles, from 21% of all women serving in 2001 to just 13% in 2012.The IDF Spokesperson's Office released the numbers in time for International Women's Day, to be commemorated on Friday.

Speaking Thursday morning, Likud Knesset faction leader MK Ze'ev Elkin said that the formation of a government at this point was in the hands of Yair Lapid -and that a deal could be signed including his Yesh Atid party in the coalition immediately, if he were to give up his demand to be Foreign Minister.

“If he were to give up the idea of being Foreign Minister and agree to take the job of Finance Minister, we could sign a deal today,” Elkin said in an interview on Army Radio. “As someone who ran his campaign on economic issues and constantly asked 'where is the money,' it is very strange that Lapid would decide that he would be seeking 'the money' abroad. The Finance Ministry is where 'the money' is, so it would seem natural for him to take that position.”According to reports, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has promised to return Avigdor Lieberman to the position of Foreign Minister, if and when he emerges unscathed from his corruption trial next month.Lapid, for his part, denies that it is a dispute as to which ministry he is awarded that is holding up the deal – and accused the Likud of cynicism for trying to spin the issue as such. “For two days they have been claiming that we are arguing over ministries, with the Likud claiming that Naftali Bennett and I are setting 'ultimatums' as our price for entering the coalition.“This is incorrect, and it's unworthy for the Likud to act in such a manner,” Lapid wrote on his Facebook page. The reason he has refused to join so far, he wrote, is because of the Likud's insistence on adding “make-work” ministry jobs to satisfy the political ambitions of members of his party and Yisrael Beiteinu. Lapid has demanded that the government be limited to no more than 20 ministers, instead of the 33 in the current government.“The argument is not about the ministries, but about the nature of the government,” Lapid wrote. “We want answers regarding the program to draft Hareidi yeshiva students. We want answers regarding the oversized government that the Prime Minister wants that will waste hundreds of millions of shekels. We want answers regarding our plan to lower the cost of housing, to ensure that education will not be harmed, and others. I promised change to my voters.

“It seems as if some people have not come to understand that things are different, that the era of 'political spin' and leaks is over, and that the public wants a clean political system that deals with the real issues,” Lapid wrote.

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea threatened the United States on Thursday with a preemptive nuclear strike, raising the level of rhetoric while the U.N. Security Council considers new sanctions against the reclusive country.North Korea has accused the United States of using military drills in South Korea as a launch pad for a nuclear war and has scrapped the armistice with Washington that ended hostilities in the 1950-53 Korean War.North Korea, which has one major ally, neighboring China, threatens the United States and its "puppet", South Korea, on an almost daily basis."Since the United States is about to ignite a nuclear war, we will be exercising our right to preemptive nuclear attack against the headquarters of the aggressor in order to protect our supreme interest," the North's foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement carried by the official KCNA news agency.North Korea conducted a third nuclear test on February 12, in defiance of U.N. resolutions, and declared it had achieved progress in securing a functioning atomic arsenal. HONG KONG (Reuters) - China's naval and paramilitary ships are churning up the ocean around islands it disputes with Tokyo in what experts say is a strategy to overwhelm the numerically inferior Japanese forces that must sail out to detect and track the flotillas.A daily stream of bulletins announce ship deployments into the East China Sea, naval combat exercises, the launch of new warships and commentaries calling for resolute defense of Chinese territory."The operational goal in the East China Sea is to wear out the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force and the Japan Coast Guard," said James Holmes, a maritime strategy expert at the Newport, Rhode Island U.S. Naval War College.It wasn't until China became embroiled in the high stakes territorial dispute with Japan late last year that its secretive military opened up.Now, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is routinely telegraphing its moves around the disputed islands, known as Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese.News of these missions also has domestic propaganda value for Beijing because it demonstrates the ruling Communist Party has the power and determination to defend what it insists has always been Chinese territory, political analysts said.However, experts warn that the danger of these constant deployments from both sides into the contested area increases the danger of an accident or miscalculation that could lead to conflict.In the most threatening incident so far, Tokyo last month said the fire control, or targeting, radar of Chinese warships near the islands "locked on" to a Japanese helicopter and destroyer in two separate incidents in late January.Beijing denies this but U.S. military officers have backed up Japan's account."We are in extremely dangerous territory here," said Ross Babbage, a military analyst in Canberra and a former senior Australian defense official."We could have had Japan and China in a serious war."Some foreign and Japanese security experts say Japan's powerful navy and coast guard still holds the upper hand in the disputed waters but that this could change if Beijing intensifies its patrols."I believe China for the time being focuses resources on the South China Sea, which is a higher priority for them now," said Yoshihiko Yamada, a maritime policy expert and professor at Tokai University."But, if they shift more resources to the East China Sea, the coast guard alone would not be able to handle the situation."There were signs that tension remained high last week when Tokyo protested that China had deployed a series of buoys around the islands to collect intelligence about Japanese operations.China's Foreign Ministry said the buoys were in Chinese waters and positioned to collect weather information.Beijing's paramilitary agencies have been equally forthright since the standoff began with a stream of news and footage of their deployments.
Ships from these agencies including customs, maritime surveillance and fisheries are in the frontline of Beijing's campaign to assert sovereignty over the disputed islands, which are believed to be rich in oil and gas.A Chinese fisheries surveillance vessel entered Japan's territorial waters near the islands for the second day running on February 24 in what was the 31st similar incursion since September, the Japanese coast guard said last week.News bulletins in China are saturated with coverage of Chinese paramilitary ships jostling for position with their Japanese counterparts around the rocky islands.
PRESSURE ON JAPAN COAST GUARD
There is evidence Japan's coast guard is feeling the pressure.It plans to form a new, 600-member unit equipped with 12 patrol ships that will be deployed exclusively on missions around the disputed islands.And, it is boosting its budget to buy ships and aircraft by 23 percent to 32.5 billion yen ($348.15 million) for the year starting in April.The coast guard also plans to add 119 personnel in the year starting next month. That would be the biggest staff increase in 32 years.As tension mounted around the islands ahead of his return to office as prime minister of Japan in December, Shinzo Abe proposed converting retired navy vessels into coast guard patrol ships.Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said on Tuesday that his ministry and the coast guard were discussing the idea.Beijing has so far held its navy back from waters immediately surrounding the disputed territory but its warships are almost constantly patrolling nearby seas and other waterways around the Japanese archipelago, according to the PLA announcements.In late January, the PLA said a naval fleet would conduct a naval exercise in the Western Pacific after "sailing through islands" off the Chinese coast, a clear reference to the Japanese archipelago. The navy had conducted seven similar exercises last year, it said.In a series of subsequent bulletins, the PLA said three of its most modern warships, the missile destroyer Qingdao and the missile frigates Yantai and Yancheng would make up the fleet which would conduct training in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea in an 18-day deployment.The U.S. navy has also monitored the sharply increased tempo of Chinese naval and paramilitary operations near Japan.In an unusually blunt public assessment, a senior American naval intelligence officer, Captain James Fanell, told a seminar in San Diego on January 31 that the PLA navy had last year sent seven surface action groups into the Philippines Sea south of Japan.It had also deployed the biggest number of submarines in its history into this area, he said.
It was unclear if Fanell was referring to the same seven deployments the PLA disclosed last month.
"Make no mistake, the PLA navy is focused on war at sea and about sinking an opposing fleet," Fanell said.
And, the U.S. officer said, China's maritime surveillance agency, a civil proxy for the PLA, had become "a full-time maritime sovereignty harassment organization" with the goal of enforcing territorial claims.
The frequency of deployments appears set to continue with the PLA announcing on February 27 it would conduct 40 military exercises this year with an increased emphasis on "core security-related interests".

Senior Chinese officials have strongly implied that Japan's claim over the islands is an attack on one of China's core interests, an important distinction to Beijing in defining its non-negotiable national priorities.

In a speech to the politburo in late January, Chinese party leader Xi Jinping referred to the pain of "wartime atrocities", an apparent reference to Japan's bloody invasion and occupation of China last century, according to a report of his remarks carried by the official Xinhua news agency."We will stick to the road of peaceful development but will never give up our legitimate rights and will never sacrifice our national core interests," he was reported to have said.And, Beijing continues to boost its military firepower. Chinese shipyards last week delivered a new, stealth frigate to the navy, the official PLA Daily newspaper reported.The radar evading type-056 frigate would be introduced in big numbers as the first step in a systematic upgrade of navy hardware, the paper said.
BUT JAPAN SAYS IT WON'T BUCKLE
Despite the intense military and diplomatic pressure, the Japanese government shows no sign of wilting.

"We simply cannot tolerate any challenge now and in the future," Prime Minister Abe said recently in Washington."No nation should make any miscalculation or underestimate the firmness of our resolve."Still, military analysts said Japanese forces must continue to match China's patrols and exercises.In a paper prepared for an Australian military think tank last year, an influential Japanese military strategist, retired Vice Admiral Yoji Koda, said Chinese naval forces sailing around the Japanese islands "will surely meet intensive surveillance and continuous tracking" from Japanese forces and its U.S. allies.Some military analysts suggest Beijing's continuous deployments around the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands are also part of a wider policy of enhancing its claims over a number of disputed territories in the East China Sea and South China Sea.

"If Beijing starts policing territory it claims as its own, and if rival claimants can't push back effectively, it will start looking like the rightful sovereign over that territory," said Holmes.However, Holmes added that Japan poses a much stiffer challenge for Beijing than smaller nations like the Philippines which also has overlapping territorial claims with China.While smaller in raw numbers than the PLA navy, the highly trained Japanese navy is generally regarded as the most powerful in Asia with state-of-the art ships, submarines and aircraft. And, it has a security alliance with the United States that obliges Washington to intervene if Japan is attacked.
Other military experts suggest Beijing has decided to intensify its operations against Japan, a nation whose wartime aggression is remembered across Asia, because confrontations with smaller neighbors in recent years had led to a region-wide diplomatic backlash."The Senkaku/Diaoyu hoopla of late is triggered by China's desire to extricate itself from total regional isolation caused by China's expansive territorial claims against virtually all of its maritime neighbors," said Yu Maochun, an expert on the PLA at the Annapolis, Maryland United States Naval Academy. Parliament chief criticises 'Frankenstein Europe'

Berlin - The EU's current institutional set-up resembles a 'Frankenstein' monster because there is no democratic separation of powers, European Parliament chief Martin Schulz said Monday (4 March) during a debate in Hamburg on sovereignty transfers to Brussels."National sovereignty in Europe is based on a model of separation of powers: we have a government that can be voted down by a parliament and an independent judiciary overseeing that rules are respected," Schulz said.He added: "What we are doing now is that we are taking bits and pieces of this framework and transferring them to the EU level, but without also transferring the separation of powers. The result is what I call 'Frankenstein Europe'."He said people cannot trust the EU when the division of labour and the legal basis is not clear.Schulz, who is tipped as Social-Democratic candidate for the EU commission top job next year, said the commission is the most undemocratic of all three institutions, because parliamentary checks and balances are minimal."There are developments in the European Commission that only alienate people. There are two schools of thought in the EU commission - one that doesn't rest until it privatises even the last local cemetery, and the other is not satisfied until we have an EU regulation for burials," the German politician quipped.He also criticised the fact that the commission, which acts like a government, is the only institution allowed to initiate legislation. "This is an undemocratic mix of legislative and executive powers. We need to reform the commission and parliamentarise Europe," Schulz said.He said the EU should have competences in the area of trade, environment, monetary policy, financial regulation and migration. "For this we need a government at EU level legitimised by the European Parliament."But other powers could be repatriated, he said, in reference to demands made by the British Prime Minister David Cameron to renegotiate the terms of Britain's membership."I am in favour of repatriating powers that have not proven a value added on EU level," Schulz said.

Syrian rebels seize U.N. peacekeepers near Golan Heights

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels have seized a convoy of U.N. peacekeepers near the Golan Heights and say they will hold them captive until President Bashar al-Assad's forces pull back from a rebel-held village which has seen heavy recent fighting.The capture was announced in rebel videos posted on the Internet and confirmed on Wednesday by the United Nations, which said about 20 peacekeepers had been detained.

The seizure is the most direct threat to U.N. personnel in the nearly two-year-old uprising against Assad, and Human Rights Watch said it was investigating the same brigade for past executions.It came on the day Britain said it would increase aid to the opposition forces and the Arab League gave a green light to member states to arm the rebels.The Arab League also invited the opposition Syrian coalition to take Syria's seat at a meeting of the regional body in Doha later this month. Syria was suspended in November 2011 in response to its crackdown on protests which has since spiraled into civil war.In the latest attack by the Syrian military, warplanes bombarded the northeastern provincial capital of Raqqa for a second consecutive day on Wednesday, killing at least 39 people, opposition activists said. Video footage showed fighters putting dismembered bodies in an ambulance.The peacekeepers of the UNDOF mission have been monitoring a ceasefire line between Syria and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, captured by the Jewish state in a 1967 war, for nearly four decades.Israel has warned that it will not "stand idle" as Syria's civil war spills over into the Golan region.The United Nations in New York said its peacekeepers had been detained by around 30 fighters in the Golan Heights. The Security Council and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the seizure of U.N. observers and demanded their immediate release."The U.N. observers were on a regular supply mission and were stopped near Observation Post 58, which had sustained damage and was evacuated this past weekend following heavy combat in close proximity at Al Jamla," the United Nations said, referring to a village which saw fierce clashes on Sunday.It did not mention the nationality of the observers, but the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group, which is in contact with the rebel brigade, said they were Filipino.In one rebel video, a young man saying he was from the "Martyrs of Yarmouk" brigade stood surrounded by several rebel fighters with assault rifles in front of two white armored vehicles and a truck with "UN" markings."The command of the Martyrs of Yarmouk ... is holding forces of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force until the withdrawal of forces of the regime of Bashar al-Assad from the outskirts of the village of Jamla," said the man, who was wearing civilian clothes.At least five people could be seen sitting in the vehicles wearing light blue U.N. helmets and bulletproof vests.
"If no withdrawal is made within 24 hours we will treat them as prisoners," the man said, accusing them of collaborating with Assad's forces to push the rebels out of Jamla.Nearly two years after the uprising started, rebels are distrustful of the United Nations, which they say has failed to support their cause.
MILITARY AID
Earlier on Wednesday, the United Nations said the number of refugees who have fled Syria had reached 1 million, part of an accelerating exodus from a conflict which is approaching its second anniversary with no prospect of an end to the bloodshed.British Foreign Secretary William Hague, pledging support for Assad's opponents, said the civil war had reached catastrophic proportions and that international efforts to stem the violence had been an abject failure.Senior U.S. and Russian diplomats will discuss the conflict at a meeting in London on Thursday, Russia said, the latest in a series of meetings aimed at seeking an end to the fighting.
But Hague said the chances of getting an immediate political solution to the crisis were slim and that diplomacy was taking too long."If a political solution to the crisis in Syria is not found and the conflict continues, we and the rest of the European Union will have to be ready to move further, and we should not rule out any option for saving lives," he said.However, Hague played down the prospect of direct Western military intervention.While Moscow has been one of Assad's main protectors, members of an Islamist insurgency involved in daily clashes in Russia's predominantly Muslim North Caucasus and their compatriots have trickled into Syria to fight on the rebels' side.A Syrian rebel leader sought to persuade European governments to lift an arms embargo for the rebels, saying any weapons provided would be accounted for and possibly returned."The weapons are registered on lists with numbers on each weapon. We distribute those weapons. And we know precisely who has received them," Brigadier Selim Idris told a news conference in Brussels.
ONE MILLION REFUGEES
At a registration center for Syrians in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, a 19-year-old mother of two registered on Wednesday as the millionth refugee to flee her country."The situation is very bad for us. We can't find work," said the teenage mother, wearing a green headscarf and holding her daughter as she spoke to reporters."I live with 20 people in one room. We can't find any other house as it is too expensive. We want to return to Syria. We wish for the crisis to be resolved."Syrians started trickling out of the country 23 months ago when Assad's forces shot at pro-democracy protests inspired by Arab revolts elsewhere.
The uprising has since turned into an increasingly sectarian struggle between armed rebels and government soldiers and militias. An estimated 70,000 people have been killed.Around half the refugees are children, most of them aged under 11, and the numbers leaving are mounting every week, the United Nations refugee agency said in statement."With a million people in flight, millions more displaced internally, and thousands of people continuing to cross the border every day, Syria is spiraling towards full-scale disaster," U.N.
