(AP) — They carry high-powered rifles and wear tactical gear, but their Hawaiian shirts and leis are what stand out in the crowds that have formed at state capital buildings to protest COVID-19 lockdown orders. The signature look for the “boogaloo” anti-government movement is designed to get attention.The group, which uses an ’80s movie sequel as a code word for a second civil war, is among the extremists using the armed protests against stay-at-home orders as a platform. Like other movements that once largely inhabited corners of the internet, it has seized on the social unrest and economic calamity caused by the pandemic to publicize its violent messages.In April, armed demonstrators passed out “Liberty or Boogaloo” fliers at a statehouse protest in Concord, New Hampshire. A leader of the Three Percenters militia movement who organized a rally in Olympia, Washington, last month encouraged rally participants to wear Hawaiian shirts, according to the Anti-Defamation League. On Saturday, a demonstration in Raleigh, North Carolina, promoted by a Facebook group called “Blue Igloo” — a derivation of the term — led to a police investigation of a confrontation between an armed protester and a couple pushing a stroller.Another anti-lockdown rally is planned for Thursday at the state Capitol in Lansing, Michigan, site of an angry protest last month that included armed members of the Michigan Liberty Militia. NEW YORK (AP) — The FBI brought weapons charges Wednesday following a New York City sting operation against two men, one of whom espoused racist and anti-Semitic views on social media and had been acquiring tactical military gear, authorities said.Joseph Miner, 29, and Daniel Jou, 40, were charged with buying firearms with obliterated serial numbers from an undercover agent in Queens.It was not clear whether the men, who are neighbors, were planning an attack, authorities said. But prosecutors pointed to alarming Instagram posts Miner made praising Hitler and the machete attack last year on a Hanukkah celebration north of New York City.In January, Miner “posted a photograph of the entrance to a Jewish Community Center in Queens,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Josh Hafetz wrote in a court filing. In another, Miner warned he “will probably have to shed my blood or go to prison for the things I say and do and stand for.”Days earlier, prosecutors said, he purchased “body armor emblazoned with an iteration of the Wolfsangel, a Nazi party symbol.”“In his own social media postings, he has glorified acts of murder and terrorism against racial, ethnic and religious groups," Hafetz wrote. "More ominously, he has ruminated about engaging in such violent conduct himself.”Miner lives with his parents in Queens and has no adult criminal history. (AP) — They carry high-powered rifles and wear tactical gear, but their Hawaiian shirts and leis are what stand out in the crowds that have formed at state capital buildings to protest COVID-19 lockdown orders. The signature look for the “boogaloo” anti-government movement is designed to get attention.The group, which uses an ’80s movie sequel as a code word for a second civil war, is among the extremists using the armed protests against stay-at-home orders as a platform. Like other movements that once largely inhabited corners of the internet, it has seized on the social unrest and economic calamity caused by the pandemic to publicize its violent messages.In April, armed demonstrators passed out “Liberty or Boogaloo” fliers at a statehouse protest in Concord, New Hampshire. A leader of the Three Percenters militia movement who organized a rally in Olympia, Washington, last month encouraged rally participants to wear Hawaiian shirts, according to the Anti-Defamation League. The United Kingdom should weigh serious economic sanctions against Israel if it goes ahead with its planned annexation of large parts of the West Bank, the House of Lords International Relations and Defence Committee said Thursday.Committee chair Joyce Anelay, a veteran Conservative lawmaker, said the incoming Israeli government’s plan would constitute a “violation of international law” and jeopardize the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, and asked the government to consider limiting Israel’s preferential access to British markets in response to such a step.In a letter to the UK minister of state responsible for the Middle East, James Cleverly, she restated her committee’s enduring commitment to a two-state solution and asked him for the government’s “urgent response” to three questions.First, Baroness Anelay urged Cleverly to reassure her that London’s opposition to any unilateral Israeli annexation of Palestinian territories remains unchanged.Second, the committee chair — a former minister of state at the Foreign Office — wanted to know what concrete actions the government would take to get Israelis and Palestinians to reengage.“What steps will it take to bring all parties back to negotiations in support of a two-state solution?
