Europe reopens widely, as nations seek to salvage summer vacation season-Countries carve out a new normal amid coronavirus pandemic as death tolls continue to slow across the continent; some prepare to open borders to tourists-By Geir Moulson and Derek Gatopoulos-MAY 18,20-Today, 2:32 pm

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Europe reopened more widely on Monday, allowing people into the Acropolis in Athens, shops in Italy, markets and museums in Belgium, garden stores in Ireland and beer gardens in Bavaria, while its leaders discussed how to salvage Europe’s hallowed summer vacations. As nations carved out a new normal amid the coronavirus pandemic, the World Health Organization was holding its main annual meeting — conducted online this year. Chinese President Xi Jinping was among a handful of world leaders expected to address the two-day online gathering that comes amid high tensions between his nation, where the coronavirus began, and the United States, the country hardest hit by the pandemic.US President Donald Trump, who has withdrawn funding to WHO because he claims it is too favorable to China, was not expected to address the meeting. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar was to represent the US.New infections and deaths have slowed considerably in Europe, where some countries started easing lockdowns a month ago and even the harshest shutdowns — such as those in Italy and Spain — have loosened significantly. Many nations are now preparing to open their borders next month, trying to sketch out the parameters for a highly unusual summer tourist season.Germany’s foreign minister, who was discussing the options Monday with colleagues from 10 largely southern European countries, cautioned that this year’s holidays will be like no other.“Even if a summer vacation will be possible elsewhere in Europe, which I hope, one has to say that this vacation this year won’t be like the ones we know from the past,” Foreign Minister Heiko Maas told ZDF television. “The pandemic is still there and we must at least have safety precautions for the worst case that the figures get worse again.”More than 4.7 million people worldwide have tested positive for the coronavirus, which emerged in China late last year, and over 315,000 deaths have been reported, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. Those figures are believed to understate the true dimensions of the pandemic because of limited testing, differences in counting the dead and concealment by some governments. The US has reported almost 90,000 deaths and Europe has seen at least 160,000 dead.Greece reopened the Acropolis in Athens and other ancient sites, along with high schools, shopping malls and mainland travel. Tourists were local, for the country still has a 14-day quarantine for arrivals, and travel to the Greek islands remains broadly restricted. Sidewalk stickers were used as markers to keep visitors apart outside the Acropolis.Authorities are eager to reopen the vital tourism sector, following a warning by the EU Commission that Greece is likely to suffer the worst recession in the 27-nation European Union this year.Greece’s public beaches reopened over the weekend amid a heatwave with strict social distancing rules, but buses from Athens to the nearby coast were crowded. In Belgium, more students returned to school, hairdressers began clipping locks again and museums and zoos opened their doors, all with strict reservation systems to avoid overcrowding. Hoping to make the most of the sunny weather, open-air markets started selling spring fruits and vegetables. Some stores reopened in Ireland but Health Minister Simon Harris said he’s still nervous because the virus hasn’t gone away. He hoped that social distancing and other measures will make more normalcy possible. If Ireland can get the next three weeks right, “we as a country will find a way to live safely alongside the virus,” Harris told RTE radio.Churches in Italy and at the Vatican resumed public Masses. Guards in hazmat suits took the temperatures of the faithful entering St. Peter’s Basilica, where Pope Francis celebrated an early morning Mass in a side chapel to commemorate the centenary of the birth of St. John Paul II.Across town, the Rev. Jose Maria Galvan snapped on a latex glove and a face mask before distributing Communion to the dozen parishioners attending Mass at his Sant’Eugenio parish. Before I became a priest I was a surgeon, so for me gloves are normal,” he joked later. The virtual meeting of the UN health agency’s World Health Assembly comes as the WHO has been drawn into a blame game between the US and China over the spread of the virus. Trump claims China mishandled the outbreak early on but China has defended its record, saying it has worked closely with the WHO to respond to the pandemic. The EU and other countries have called for an independent evaluation of the WHO’s response to the pandemic “to review experience gained and lessons learned.” The resolution has the support of more than half of WHO’s member countries.China reported just seven new cases on Monday but kept tighter social distancing rules in parts of the northeastern province of Jilin after a cluster of cases of unknown origin turned up. But many people in Beijing, where no cases have been reported in weeks, have stopped wearing masks outdoors, although masks are required in most indoor areas and on public transportation.Moscow health officials said 77 people died of the virus in the Russian capital in the past 24 hours, the highest daily number so far. With over 290,000 infections, Russia is second only to the US in the number of cases but health officials suspect many more people with the virus have died than Russia’s official death toll of 2,722.In some Indian states, people trickled outdoors and thin traffic returned to the roads Monday, a day after the government extended a nationwide lockdown to May 31 but eased many restrictions to restore economic activity. Small shops and other businesses reopened in several states, including the capital, New Delhi. At the same time, India recorded its biggest single-day coronavirus surge with 5,242 new cases, along with 157 deaths. In Brazil, President Jair Bolsonaro greeted hundreds of supporters — and joined some in performing push-ups — who gathered before the presidential offices to back his open-the-economy drive. Bolsonaro has played down the impact of the virus even as it has swept through Latin America’s most populous country, leaving over 16,000 people dead.

Virus cases continue to fall, but small increase in patients on ventilators-Death toll remains steady at 272; Health Ministry says no new cases on Monday morning with testing rates low, but 4 infections discovered overnight-By TOI staff-may 18,20-Today, 12:35 pm

The Health Ministry said no new cases of coronavirus were diagnosed on Monday morning as of 11 a.m., though there were four new cases during the night, bringing the total number of infections to 16,621, an increase of 14 cases since Sunday morning. However, only 905 tests were performed as of 11 a.m., fewer than half of the number administered over the same period on most other days. Israel has the lab capacity to test up to 15,000 people for coronavirus daily but demand has gone down as fewer suspected cases show up to have swabs taken, the Health Ministry said last month. No new deaths were reported Sunday night or Monday morning, keeping the death toll steady at 272.However, the number of people on ventilators increased from 44 on Sunday night to 47 on Monday morning.Medical workers at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv treat a patient in the coronavirus unit on May 4, 2020. (Yossi Aloni/Flash90)-Of the 3,335 people who still have the virus, 57 are in serious condition, an increase of two since Sunday evening, and 39 are in moderate condition, with the rest showing only mild symptoms. So far, 13,014 people have recovered from the virus. The number of new infections has slowed dramatically in recent weeks and the government has increasingly rolled back restrictions meant to curb the outbreak, aiming to fully reopen schools this week after two months of closure. However, since Friday, three staff members at schools in the central cities of Rehovot and Tel Aviv have been diagnosed with the virus, sending dozens of teachers and students into quarantine.Meanwhile, many businesses have been permitted to reopen and restrictions on public areas have been eased, though social distancing and face masks are still compulsory. More such measures are reportedly in the works. However, violations have been reported across the country, including thousands of beach-goers who ignored the closure of the shores during unseasonably sweltering weather.

Canadian Forces Snowbird Plane Crashes In Kamloops, B.C.[HuffPost Canada]-Premila D'S Canada-May 18, 2020

A Canadian Forces Snowbird plane crashed in a B.C. neighbourhood Sunday, killing one team member and seriously injuring another. The day began with anticipation in the Thompson Okanagan region as people waited for a glimpse of the Snowbirds in the sky and their national tour to boost morale and salute front-line workers during the coronavirus pandemic. It ended with “heavy hearts” as the Royal Canadian Air Force confirmed the toll of the crash. Capt. Jenn Casey, a public affairs officer with the Canadian Forces, died in the incident, said the Department of National Defence Sunday night, while one of the team’s co-ordinators and pilot Capt. Richard MacDougall was being treated for serious but not life-threatening injuries. It is with heavy hearts that we announce that one member of the CF Snowbirds team has died and one has sustained serious injuries. We can confirm that we have contacted all primary family members of those involved. More information will be communicated in the near future. — Royal Canadian Air Force (@RCAF_ARC) May 17, 2020-The incident unfolded just before noon local time in Kamloops, B.C. after the jet took off from the airport. “I was about two or three blocks away, and we heard the jets take off. About three or four seconds later, we heard two giant booms,” said Brayden Regamey, who lives near the airport, where he also works. According to witnesses, one of the aircraft climbed into the sky before rolling over and plunging to the ground. Video recorded by a bystander shows smoke appearing from the plane and at least one person ejecting from the aircraft before an explosion is heard. The plane crashed in a residential area and led to a house fire, as people rushing from their homes to help. “I just started running down the street. And I got there maybe a minute after it crashed and there was a couple of residents that had their hoses out and they were trying to put the flames out,” said Kenny Hinds, who lives seven doors down from the crash site. “I saw the tail of the Snowbird on the left side of the street, and at least half of the plane, from the middle to the nose, had slid [down the street],” he told HuffPost Canada. Tammy Franzman, who also lives near the crash site said she thought it was a house explosion — until she ran toward smoke coming from the back of a nearby home and saw the tail of the plane across the street from it.“That’s when I heard the pilot was on a roof a couple of houses down from Schreiner Avenue,” she told HuffPost.Officials said one person was taken to the hospital. First responders attend to a person on a rooftop at the scene of a crash involving a Canadian ForcesRose Miller, who lives directly across the street from where the plane hit, said she spoke to the couple in their early 70s who live in the home, and both are OK. The woman had been in the basement while the man was behind the house.Former reporter joined the Canadian Forces-Casey joined the Canadian Forces in 2014 and was based out of Trenton, Ont., after working in radio as a reporter, anchor and producer in her hometown of Halifax and Belleville, Ont., according to her Royal Canadian Air Force bio.Casey spent most of 2018 with the CF-18 Demo Team, travelling around North America and the United Kingdom with the NORAD 60 jet. She joined the Snowbirds in November 2018.The Snowbirds started their cross-country flyover, dubbed Operation Inspiration, earlier this month. In a poignant performance, the squadron flew a special “missing man” manoeuvre over Nova Scotia to remember victims of the country’s worst mass shooting, as well as members of the Canadian Forces who died in a helicopter crash off Greece.Capt. Joel Wilson explained to CTV News at the time that the manoeuvre is when one jet flies off the nine-aircraft formation to symbolize members who have died on duty. Casey’s home province is Nova Scotia. “Operation Inspiration was intended to lift the spirit of Canadians at this difficult time and the Snowbirds accomplished their mission. I know that all Canadians grieve this tragic loss,” said Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan.‘Deepest sympathies’-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he joined Canadians in mourning Casey.“I’m sending my deepest condolences to her loved ones, and wishing Captain Richard MacDougall a full recovery,” he posted.“For the past two weeks, the Snowbirds have been flying across the country to lift up Canadians during these difficult times. Every day, they represent the very best of Canada and demonstrate excellence through incredible skill and dedication,” said Trudeau in a statement. Hours before the crash, the Snowbirds had posted a video that showed them making their way from Salmon Arm to Kamloops. Their social accounts had also posted about a delay in their scheduled trip from Kamloops to Kelowna due to rain and low visibility.he Snowbirds fleet has been placed on “operational pause” and the Operation Inspiration has been “delayed indefinitely,” said the Defence department. Flight safety investigators were leaving Ottawa Sunday to investigate the circumstances of the accident, it added. Sunday’s crash follows the downing of another Snowbird in the U.S. state of Georgia last October, where the team was scheduled to perform in an air show.Capt. Kevin Domon-Grenier sustained minor injuries when he ejected from the plane, which crashed into a farmer’s field. No one else was hurt.Famous air shows-The Snowbird air shows feature nine CT-114 Tutors flying in formation, and performing different manoeuvres at speeds between 190 km/h and 590 km/h.Based at 15 Wing Moose Jaw, near Moose Jaw, Sask, the Snowbirds are considered a key tool for raising awareness about — and recruiting for — the air force. The air force obtained its Tutor jets in 1963 and has used them in air demonstrations since 1971. Prior to Sunday’s crash, seven pilots and one passenger had been killed and several aircraft had been lost over the course of the Snowbirds’ history. With files from The Canadian Press-This article originally appeared on HuffPost.

MIGRATING BIRDS IN ISRAEL EATS HUMANS FLESH FOR COMING AGAINST ISRAEL-JERUSALEM

EZEKIEL 38:1-23
1 And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2 Son of man, set thy face against Gog,(RULER) the land of Magog,(RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech (MOSCOW) and Tubal,(TOBOLSK) and prophesy against him,
3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog,(LEADER OF RUSSIA) the chief prince of Meshech(MOSCOW) and Tubal:TOBOLSK)
4 And I (GOD) will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws,(GOD FORCES THE RUSSIA-MUSLIMS TO MARCH) and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords:
5 Persia,(IRAN,IRAQ) Ethiopia, and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet:
6 Gomer,(GERMANY) and all his bands; the house of Togarmah (TURKEY) of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee.(AFRICAN MUSLIMS,SUDAN,TUNESIA ETC)
7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.
8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.
9 Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.(RUSSIA-EGYPT AND MUSLIMS)
10 Thus saith the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into thy mind, and thou shalt think an evil thought:
11 And thou shalt say,(RUSSIA-ARAB-MUSLIMS) I will go up to the land of unwalled villages;(ISRAEL) I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,
12 To take a spoil,(OIL IS IN SPOIL) and to take a prey; to turn thine hand upon the desolate places that are now inhabited, and upon the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods, that dwell in the midst of the land.
13  Sheba, and Dedan,(SAUDI-ARABIA) and the merchants of Tarshish,(SPAIN) with all the young lions thereof,(ENGLAND,AND ALL ITS ASSOCIATES-CANADA,AUSTRALIA-NEW ZEALAND, USA, AND WESTERN ENGLISH SPEAKING NATIONS) shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?(OIL IS IN SPOIL-I BELIEVE THATS WHY RUSSIA,ARAB/MUSLIMS MARCH TO ISRAEL)
14  Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say unto Gog, Thus saith the Lord GOD; In that day when my people of Israel dwelleth safely, shalt thou not know it?
15  And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou, and many people with thee, all of them riding upon horses, a great company, and a mighty army:
16  And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.

EZEKIEL 39:11-22
11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog (RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS) a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers (EAST OF THE DEAD SEA IN JORDAN VALLEY) on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog (RUSSIAN) and all his multitude:(ARAB/MUSLIM HORDE) and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog.(BURIEL SITE OF THE 300 MILLION,RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIMS)
12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.(OF ISRAEL)
13 Yea, all the people of the land (OF ISRAEL) shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I (GOD-JESUS) shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
14 And they shall sever out men of continual employment,(NUCLEAR ATOMIC BOMB EXPERTS) passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15 And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man’s bone, then shall he set up a sign by it,(WON'T TOUCH IT) till the buriers have buried it (PROPERLY) in the valley of Hamongog.(RUSSIA/ARAB/MUSLIMS NEW BURIEL SITE)(EAST OF THE DEAD SEA IN THE JORDAN VALLEY)
16 And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.(OF THE ISRAEL-GOD HATERS)
17 And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl,(500 MILLION MIGRATING BIRDS THREW ISRAEL EVERY SPRING,FALL) and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.(OF THE RUSSIAN/ARAB/MUSLIM ARMIES)
18  Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19  And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
20  Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21  And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.
22  So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.

Iran MPs ban work with Israel, including using its software, as acts against God-The Times of Israel-'All Iranian bodies must... confront the Zionist regime'-Unclear how unanimously adopted new law is to be implemented; Rouhani allows residents of low-risk virus regions to attend anti-Israel al-Quds day prayers Friday-By TOI staff-may 18,20-Today, 12:46 pm

Iran’s parliament on Monday approved legislation barring any cooperation with Israel, including the use of any Israeli computer hardware or software, and branding any such cooperation an act against God.“Based on the first article of the bill, all Iranian bodies are required to use the country’s regional and international capacities to confront the Zionist regime’s measures,” an Iranian parliamentary spokesman, Seyed Hossein Naqavi Hosseini, said. According to the Fars news site, any cooperation or spying for “the Zionist regime” is to be considered “equal to enmity towards God and corruption on earth,” and “activities of the Israeli software platforms in Iran and using its hardware and software products is forbidden.”The law was adopted unanimously by all legislators present, Fars reported. There was no clarification as to how its provisions would be implemented. The law passed ahead of Friday’s annual al-Quds day, which is usually marked by regime-orchestrated demonstrations across Iran against Israel and expressing support for Palestinians. It is held on the last Friday of Ramadan, which this year is May 22.On Saturday, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said Iranians living in areas considered to be at low risk of a further coronavirus outbreak will be allowed to attend Friday prayers including Quds Day commemorations.“Two decisions have been made for the Quds Day; first is that Quds Day will be held in 218 cities which are white cities [considered to be at low risk of an outbreak] not in the form of rallies but by presence at Friday prayers, respecting all hygiene protocols,” Rouhani told a meeting of the national coronavirus taskforce, according to the semi-official Fars news agency. In Tehran, which is deemed high-risk, a “symbolic ceremony” will be performed with a motorcade supervised by the Revolutionary Guards.“It was decided that the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) be tasked with holding the rallies,” the president said.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani attends a cabinet meeting in Tehran, Iran, March 18, 2020. (Office of the Iranian Presidency via AP)-Last month Iran held its annual parade to mark Army Day, but instead of the usual display of missiles and planes, the Islamic Republic flaunted its disinfectant trucks and mobile hospitals as the nation continued to battle the coronavirus pandemic. Iran announced Friday there had been nearly 7,000 deaths from COVID-19, while warning that the easing of lockdown measures could lead to further outbreaks.Iran has marked al-Quds Day since the start of its 1979 Islamic Revolution by the late ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Iran — which arms terror groups Hezbollah and Hamas, both of which are sworn to Israel’s destruction — says the day is an occasion to express support for the Palestinians.Demonstrators usually set fire to American and Israeli flags, and last year in Tehran also burned effigies of US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Similar rallies took place in 950 cities and towns across the country.Rouhani’s announcement came as Iranian officials confirmed that a fire had broken out early Friday morning at the site of an ancient shrine revered by Iranian Jews as the burial place of the biblical Esther and Mordechai, and said that no damage was done to the hall housing the tomb itself. An investigation revealed that a person was caught in CCTV footage trying to enter the holy site through an adjacent bank and “perform a series of actions” but “failed,” opposition news sites said, citing a report in the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).The report said the cameras had registered the person’s face, but “information about the person’s motives and identity cannot be provided until they are arrested.”The IRNA report was deleted from its website two hours after its publication Saturday morning, the Radio Farda and Iran International websites said. The attack came on May 15, the day after the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel and marked as Nakba Day, or the day of catastrophe, raising widespread suspicion that it was a hate crime against Jews and the Jewish state.

1  A Psalm of Asaph. O God, the heathen are come into thine inheritance;(JERUSALEM) thy holy temple have they defiled;(AD 70) they have laid Jerusalem on heaps.
2  The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.
3  Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem; and there was none to bury them.
4  We are become a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and derision to them that are round about us.
5  How long, LORD? wilt thou be angry for ever? shall thy jealousy burn like fire?
6  Pour out thy wrath upon the heathen that have not known thee, and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.
7  For they have devoured Jacob,(ISRAEL) and laid waste his dwelling place.
8  O remember not against us former iniquities: let thy tender mercies speedily prevent us: for we are brought very low.
9  Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake.
10  Wherefore should the heathen say, Where is their God? let him be known among the heathen in our sight by the revenging of the blood of thy servants which is shed.
11  Let the sighing of the prisoner come before thee; according to the greatness of thy power preserve thou those that are appointed to die;

New FM Ashkenazi endorses Trump peace plan as ‘historic opportunity’-The Times of Israel-New FM Ashkenazi endorses Trump peace plan as ‘historic opportunity’-Incoming top diplomat says deal could shape Israel’s borders, but annexation should be ‘advanced responsibly’ in keeping with Jerusalem’s strategic interests-By Raphael Ahren-MAY 18,20-Today, 12:03 pm

Incoming Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi on Monday expressed warm support for the US administration’s plan for an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement, calling it a “historic opportunity” to shape Israel’s borders, while stopping short of explicitly endorsing a unilateral annexation of West Bank territory.“We’re facing significant regional opportunities, primarily President [Donald] Trump’s peace initiative. I consider this plan a significant milestone,” he said at a modest changing-of-the-guard ceremony at the Foreign Ministry conference room in Jerusalem.“President Trump presented us with a historic opportunity to shape the future of the State of Israel and its boundaries for decades to come,” he added. The words “and its boundaries” did not appear in his prepared remarks as they were sent to reporters by the Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson.“The plan will be advanced responsibly, with full coordination with the United States and maintaining all of the State of Israel’s peace agreements and strategic interests,” Ashkenazi said, sitting next to his predecessor, incoming Finance Minister Israel Katz. The remark was a clear reference to Jordan, whose King Abdullah last week warned that an Israeli annexation of parts of the West Bank would lead to a “massive conflict” with his country, and did not rule out pulling out of Amman’s peace deal with the Jewish state.Jerusalem’s peace agreements with the Hashemite Kingdom and with Cairo “are strategic assets that we have to preserve,” Ashkenazi said. “I see great importance in strengthening our strategic ties with the countries of peace, Egypt and Jordan. They are our most important allies in tackling regional challenges.”Most other members of the international community, especially Europe and the Arab world, vociferously oppose Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to unilaterally apply sovereignty over the entire Jordan Valley and Israeli settlements across the West Bank.According to the coalition agreement signed between his Likud party and Ashkenazi’s Blue and White slate, the prime minister can bring the annexation plan to a vote in the Knesset or the cabinet as soon as July 1.According to the agreement, annexation will be advanced in coordination with the US and “international dialogue on the issue, while pursuing the security and strategic interests of the State of Israel, including the need for maintaining regional stability, maintaining peace agreements and striving for future peace agreements.”Blue and White chairman Benny Gantz (L) and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Knesset plenum on May 17, 2020. (Knesset)-At the new government’s swearing-in at the Knesset Sunday, Netanyahu repeatedly vowed to advance his plan, while Blue and White leader Benny Gantz, the incoming defense minister, avoided the issue in his public remarks.During his maiden speech as Israel’s top diplomat Monday at the Foreign Ministry, Ashkenazi — a former army chief who during his short stint in politics headed the Knesset’s influential Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee — said that he `views diplomacy as a means to avoid war and to achieve peace.“The diplomatic effort to stop the Iranian threat was and remains our most important mission,” he said. “We have to continue using all the tools at our disposal, in the diplomatic area of course, in addition to actions in the defense arena.”Ashkenazi vowed to advance Israel’s ties with other countries in the Middle East but did not name them. He also promised to work to improve relations with Russia and Europe. “Let our actions speak,” he told the handful of Foreign Ministry employees present, and the hundreds of diplomats following the ceremony on their computer screens, upon which he and Katz raised a toast to the new government.

Trouble in paradise: ‘GOD TV’ spat exposes tensions between Israel, evangelicals-The Times of Israel-Trouble in paradise: ‘GOD TV’ spat exposes tensions between Israel, evangelicals-Jewish state has long welcomed Christians’ political and financial support, but most Jews view any effort to convert them as deeply offensive-By Joseph Krauss-may 18,20-Today, 10:24 am

AP — An evangelical broadcaster who boasted of miraculously securing a TV license in Israel now risks being taken off the air over suspicions of trying to convert Jews to Christianity. The controversy over “GOD TV” has put both Israel and its evangelical Christian supporters in an awkward position, exposing tensions the two sides have long papered over.Evangelical Christians, particularly in the United States, are among the strongest supporters of Israel, viewing it as the fulfillment of biblical prophecy, with some seeing it as the harbinger of a second coming of Jesus Christ and the end of days.Israel has long welcomed evangelicals’ political and financial support, especially as their influence over the White House has risen during the Trump era, and it has largely shrugged off concerns about any hidden religious agenda. But most Jews view any effort to convert them to Christianity as deeply offensive, a legacy of centuries of persecution and forced conversion at the hands of Christian rulers. In part because of those sensitivities, evangelical Christians, who generally believe salvation can only come through Jesus and preach the Gospel worldwide, rarely target Jews.Illustrative: Thousands of evangelical Christian pilgrims pray during a prayer gathering on the Dead Sea shore in Ein Gedi on September 20, 2013 in the Judean Desert, during their annual visit to Israel to mark the Jewish holiday of Sukkot (Tabernacles) and to express solidarity with Israel. (AFP PHOTO/MENAHEM KAHANA)-When GOD TV, an international Christian broadcaster, reached a seven-year contract earlier this year with HOT, Israel’s main cable provider, it presented itself as producing content for Christians. But in a video message that has since been taken down, GOD TV CEO Ward Simpson suggested its real aim was to convince Jews to accept Jesus as their messiah. The channel, known as “Shelanu,” broadcast in Hebrew even though most Christians in the Holy Land speak Arabic.“God has supernaturally opened the door for us to take the Gospel of Jesus into the homes and lives and hearts of his Jewish people,” Simpson said in the video.“They’ll watch secretly, they’ll watch quietly,” he added. “God is restoring his people, God is removing the blindness from their eyes.”In a subsequent video, Simpson acknowledged that the channel was under investigation by Israeli authorities, saying that preaching about Jesus in Israel is a “very touchy subject.” He apologized for any offensive remarks and said GOD TV would comply with all regulations.Freedom of religion is enshrined in Israeli law, and proselytizing is allowed as long as missionary activities are not directed at minors and do not involve economic coercion. The Communications Ministry said it was investigating a “discrepancy” between the application for the license that was granted in March, which said the channel was focused on the Christian community, and its actual content, which appears to “target Jews and convince them that Jesus is the messiah.”HOT said in a statement that it was not responsible for the channel’s content and has been “fully transparent” with authorities.GOD TV was founded in the UK in 1995 and eventually grew into a 24-hour network with offices in several countries. Its international broadcasting licenses are held by a Florida-based nonprofit. It claims to reach 300 million households worldwide, and Simpson was among the participants at a high-level Christian media summit hosted by Israel last year.Simpson denied trying to convert Jews to Christianity. He said Jews who accept Jesus as the messiah can continue to practice their faith, a reference to Messianic Jews, popularly known as Jews for Jesus. The Messianic movement, which emerged in its modern form in the 1970s, incorporates Jewish symbols and practices — including referring to Jesus by his Hebrew name, Yeshua — but is widely seen as a form of Christianity. All major Jewish denominations reject it, and Israel considers Messianic Jews to be converts to another faith.“There’s no such thing really as the Messianic movement,” said Rabbi Tovia Singer, who leads an organization devoted to countering missionary activity aimed at Jews. “It’s a dog whistle, it’s a name that’s used by evangelical Christian Protestants.”He said Simpson’s willingness to speak openly about conversion reflects the growing influence of evangelical Christians in both Israel and the United States.“They feel bulletproof to say these kinds of things and what their real agenda is,” he said.Ward Simpson (Screen capture: YouTube)-Rev. Malcolm Hedding, the former executive director of the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem, an umbrella group for Christian Zionists, said Christians only share their faith when asked, and denied they have any secret agenda.“Evangelical support for Israel is not based on prophecies but on promises that God gave to Abraham 4,000 years ago,” he said. “We cannot, and should not, let the arrival of a TV channel in Israel impact negatively on the well-being of a movement that for decades now has brought about a new day in Jewish Christian relationships.”At least one prominent evangelical supporter of Israel has criticized GOD TV for airing missionary content aimed at Jews, saying it encourages anti-Semitism.“In recent decades, millions of Christians have felt the call to stand with the State of Israel and the Jewish people with no hidden agenda,” said Laurie Cardoza-Moore, a Tennessee-based evangelical who hosts a program called “Focus on Israel” that previously aired on GOD TV.“Any attempts to convert Jews or downgrade their religion will only [sow] undue hatred at a time when we should unite in the face of darkness,” Cardoza-Moore said.Daniel Hummel, the author of a book on evangelicals and Israel, says Christian Zionists have “more or less learned” that Messianic Judaism’s presence in the movement is “politically unwise.”The issue always continues to simmer, but the precedent was set [in the 1970s] and grew stronger that any Christian organization wishing to work in Israel or be at all close to the center of political action in the [Christian Zionist movement] would need to publicly disavow at minimum coercive evangelization.”Simpson says GOD TV has hired lawyers to resolve the issue and is determined to stay on the air.“The last thing we want to do is to cause division over there,” he said. “We love Israel.”
