AP-NORC poll: Americans harbor strong fear of new infections-[Associated Press]-THOMAS BEAUMONT and HANNAH FINGERHUT-May 21, 2020

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Strong concern about a second wave of coronavirus infections is reinforcing widespread opposition among Americans to reopening public places, a new poll finds, even as many state leaders step up efforts to return to life before the pandemic.Yet support for public health restrictions imposed to control the virus’s spread is no longer overwhelming. It has been eroded over the past month by a widening partisan divide, with Democrats more cautious and Republicans less anxious as President Donald Trump urges states to “open up our country,” according to the new survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The poll finds that 83% of Americans are at least somewhat concerned that lifting restrictions in their area will lead to additional infections, with 54% saying they are very or extremely concerned that such steps will result in a spike of COVID-19 cases.“Oh, I’d like to get my hair and nails done. It’s one of those little pleasures you take for granted,” said Kathy Bishop, a 59-year-old billing specialist who had pneumonia two years ago. “But I’m just going to suck it up. It’s not worth the risk.”Bishop lives in the western suburbs of Columbus, Ohio, a state where Republican Gov. Mike DeWine is among the state chief executives leading a gradual reopening of businesses such as salons, barbershops, restaurants and bars. But even after nine weeks spent at home, Bishop is among the solid majority of Americans who support rigorous criteria for economic reopening that goes beyond wearing masks in public places and continued social distancing.About 8 in 10 Americans say that it's essential to reopening for people to return to self-quarantine if they are exposed to the virus. Roughly 6 in 10 also say having widespread testing for the coronavirus in their area is essential to reestablishing public activities, along with requiring people to keep 6 feet (1.8 meters) apart in most places and to wear face masks when they're near others outside their homes.Nearly as telling as the public's appetite for rigorous precaution: Close to half say it is essential that a vaccine be available before public life resumes. A third say that's important but not essential.Taken together, the findings suggest that while some Americans are anxious to get back to business as usual, most don’t see the country returning anytime soon to what once was considered normal. Instead, Americans largely envision a protracted period of physical distancing, covered faces and intermittent quarantines ahead, perhaps until a vaccine is available.Joe Yeskewicz, of Middleboro, Massachusetts, said he believes a vaccine is a must for his town of 23,000 south of Boston to fully reopen. He's among the nearly 8 in 10 Americans who don't expect one to be ready before the end of the year.“It is so novel, so unpredictable and so terribly, terribly contagious,” the 76-year-old retired teacher and college professor said of the virus. “The vaccine predictably could take years because it has to undergo a vigorous testing program for it to be effective and safe. Regardless of the optimism, this is going to take a while.”The latest AP-NORC survey was conducted over this past weekend, before Monday's news of positive results in a clinical trial of a potential vaccine. It found that a solid majority of about 6 in 10 Americans are in favor of requiring people to stay in their homes except for essential errands, with about a third of the country strongly behind that approach. While still resolute, support for such measures to contain the coronavirus has slipped in the past month — 80% were in favor of stay-at-home orders in April. The new survey found that 69% now favor restricting gatherings to 10 people or fewer, down from 82% in April. Those declines are largely driven by changes in attitudes among Republicans, as Trump and several GOP governors have aggressively pressed for and moved ahead with reopening businesses and public places. Some people in Wisconsin headed straight for the local tavern last week after the conservative-controlled state Supreme Court upheld the GOP-controlled legislature's appeal of Democratic Gov. Tony Evers’ stay-at-home order.Just 45% of Republicans now say they favor stay-at-home orders, while about as many are opposed. A month ago, 70% of Republicans backed them. Among Democrats, 78% favor stay-at-home orders, down from 91% in April.-Only about a third of Republicans say they are very or extremely concerned about the possibility of additional infections if restrictions are lifted, compared to three-quarters of Democrats.Peggy Dullum, a 65-year-old Republican and retired state health care worker from suburban Sacramento, California, said she once supported strict lockdown measures to contain the virus. But she now thinks they have outlived their purpose.“If they’d have opened all retail, it would have spread out social activity rather than congesting it in those few retail locations where people crowded without masks,” Dullum said. “Make everybody wear a mask, instead of making it voluntary, and we probably could have kept the economy moving at a solid pace during the second month.”But Yeskewicz, the Democratic-leaning independent from Massachusetts, shakes his head — including at the small but vocal pockets of protesters, at times armed and brandishing Confederate flags, who complain that leaders who back continued safety measures are doing so out of anything but concern for public health.“We can’t just arbitrarily restore privileges simply because people are so desperate they can’t stand it any more,” Yeskewicz said. “It's not about people's rights being violated. They are trying to keep you alive, you bozos!”___Fingerhut reported from Washington.___The AP-NORC poll of 1,056 adults was conducted May 14-18 using a sample drawn from NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error for all respondents is plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.___Online:AP-NORC Center: http://www.apnorc.org/

By design, cyberattack on Iran port caused only minor damage – report-The Times of Israel-Then-defense minister Bennett reportedly pushed for move-By design, cyberattack on Iran port caused only minor damage – report-New York Times says Bandar Abbas port was specifically chosen as non-central target for Israeli hack, to retaliate for failed attack by Tehran-By Michael Bachner and TOI staff-may 21,20-Today, 3:02 pm

Israel’s cyberattack on Iran’s largest port earlier this month, reported Monday to have caused massive disruptions to its operations, in fact caused only minor damage — and by design — The New York Times reported Wednesday. The Washington Post reported Monday that Israel had brought down the Shahid Rajaee port’s computer systems, causing a total shutdown of the facility, on May 9.Israel has refused to officially comment on the report, which cited US and other foreign officials as saying Israel was likely behind the computer attack.Shahid Rajaee Port, in the southern Hormozgan Province, is located some 25 kilometers (15 miles) from the city of Bandar Abbas. It is also known as the port of Bandar Abbas.Israel has long accused Iran of using the port for military purposes to aid terrorists elsewhere in the Middle East, including the Jewish state’s foes Hamas and Hezbollah, with the IDF intercepting some of the shipments.
IDF soldiers inspect a missile found on board the Klos-C in a commando operation on March 5, 2014. The military said the ship was carrying an Iranian arms shipment headed for Gaza. (IDF)The Times on Wednesday said Israel was indeed behind the attack but cast doubt on its scale, citing “high-ranking intelligence officials and experts in the Middle East who are kept informed of covert Israeli actions in the region.”“The attack on the computer systems at the Shahid Rajaee port in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz was limited in scope, creating traffic jams of delivery trucks and some delays in shipments, but causing no substantial or lasting damage,” the report said. The attack was apparently in response to an alleged Iranian attempt to hack into Israel’s water infrastructure system. Israel’s high-level security cabinet held a secret meeting to discuss a response to the hack attack on May 7, according to Channel 13 news, and regarded the attempt to damage its water system, a non-military target, as crossing a red line.Israeli officials originally did not even think the Iranian attack warranted a response, according to the Wednesday report, and the retaliation was pushed by now-former defense minister Naftali Bennett, who also ordered that it be leaked to international media.According to the report, the port has been hobbled by US-led sanctions on Iran and currently only handles 20 ships a month at most. It was specifically chosen as a non-central target with the goal of sending a message more than to inflict actual damage, the report said. However, as of several years ago, before sanctions decimated Iran’s economy, the port was by far its largest and most strategically important. It accounts for some 60 percent of all the country’s port activity, Mohammad Saeednejad, the former managing director of Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran, said in 2017.“The significance of the port lies in the fact that it is located at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz where nearly 50,000 vessels of different countries sail annually,” he told Iran’s ILNA news agency at the time.Saeednejad added that between March 2016 and March 2017, exports from the port totaled some 44 million tons of goods worth more than $11.14 billion, and imports totaled nearly 10 million tons worth $18.65 billion. The Shahid Rajaee port facility in the Iranian coastal city of Bandar Abbas (Iran Ports and Maritime Organization)-Iran has also claimed that the attack caused significantly less damage than originally reported by the Washington Post.On Tuesday, the country’s Tasnim news agency quoted an unnamed official as claiming that no major disruptions were caused at the port, and that civil defense units had been able to mostly thwart the attack “due to their timely and effective response to the infiltration attempt.”The report also quoted Mohammad Rastad, the current managing director of the Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran, as saying that the hack didn’t damage any of its systems but “was only able to infiltrate and damage a number of private operating systems at the ports.”Satellite images of the port on May 11 and May 12 taken by Planet Labs and seen by The Times of Israel appeared to show a large number of ships idling off the port and a buildup of containers on dry land, days after the alleged Israeli cyberattack.Israel’s security firms and agencies have reportedly been preparing for a potential Iranian or Iran-linked cyberattack in response to the attack on the port.Security officials on Tuesday instructed agencies and sensitive facilities to raise their awareness and preparedness for the option of a retaliatory cyberattack as part of an apparent new tit-for-tat war, Hebrew-language media reported. In this photo provided May 11, 2020, the Konarak support vessel which was struck during a training exercise in the Gulf of Oman, is docked in an unidentified naval base in Iran (Iranian Army via AP)Army chief Aviv Kohavi on Tuesday hinted at Israel’s rolyberattack, saying the IDF would continue to use “various military tools” against the country’s enemies. While it is not unusual  politicians to insinuate Israeli involvement in attacks on Iran and terror groups, it is less common for senior IDF officers —  who tend to maintain a policy of ambiguity regarding the military’s activities abroad — to do so.On Tuesday, the former head of IDF Military Intelligence, Amos Yadlin, said the Iranian cyberattack on water facilities, which failed to cause significant damage, appeared to be in response to recent Israeli airstrikes against Iran’s forces and proxies in Syria.A security official, who spoke on the condition that his identity and nationality not be revealed, told The Washington Post that the attack caused “total disarray” at the port.“Computers that regulate the flow of vessels, trucks and goods all crashed at once, creating massive backups on waterways and roads leading to the facility,” the Post reported, adding that it had seen satellite photos showing miles-long traffic jams leading to the port and ships still waiting to offload several days later.Iran later acknowledged that an unknown foreign hacker had briefly knocked the port’s computers offline. The response appeared to indicate that Israel has adopted a “tit-for-tat” strategy in responding to Iranian cyber warfare, like that already used by the Israeli military with physical, or kinetic, attacks, an Israeli official said.View of the Eshkol Water Filtration Plant in northern Israel, on April 17, 2007. (Moshe Shai/FLASH90)-“The cyberattack on the [Shahid Rajaee port] in Iran was an Israeli response to the cyber attack that [the Iranians] carried out against Israel two weeks before against Mekorot [national water company] components — an attack that failed,” the official told Channel 12 news, on condition of anonymity.“Israel hopes that [the Iranians] stop there. They attacked water infrastructure components. They didn’t really cause damage — but they crossed a line and [Israel] needed to retaliate,” the official said.Iran — whose regime avowedly seeks the Jewish state’s destruction — and Israel have engaged in covert cyber-warfare for over a decade, including reported efforts by the Jewish state and US to remotely sabotage the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program in 2010 using an advanced cyber weapon known as Stuxnet.Agencies contributed to this report.

Khamenei explains ‘final solution’ poster: I favor destroying Israel, not Jews-The Times of Israel-After being accused of endorsing genocide, Iranian supreme leader says annihilating the Jewish state ‘means abolishing the imposed regime’ and ousting ‘thugs’ like Netanyahu-By TOI staff-Today, 10:17 pm

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday said he only wishes for Israel’s destruction and not the annihilation of all Jews, after facing accusations of endorsing genocide.Khamenei was commenting on a poster published on his website that used the words “final solution” in calling for Israel’s destruction, a term usually associated with Nazi Germany’s plans to eliminate Jews during the Holocaust.“Eliminating the Zionist regime doesn’t mean eliminating Jews. We aren’t against Jews. It means abolishing the imposed regime & Muslim, Christian & Jewish Palestinians choose their own govt & expel thugs like [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu,” Khamenei wrote on his Twitter account.“This is ‘Eliminating Israel'” he explained, insisting “it will happen.”A poster from Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s website calling for Israel’s destruction that uses the term “final solution,” which usually refers to the Nazi policy of genocide against Jews during the Holocaust. (via english.khamenei.ir)He also claimed Israel only understood force and didn’t adhere by any treaty agreements.“The nature of the Zionist regime is incompatible with peace because the Zionists seek to expand their territories & will certainly not be limited to what they have already occupied,” he said.“Comprehensive struggles by the Palestinian nation — political, military & cultural — should continue till the usurpers submit to the referendum for the Palestinian nation,” Khamenei added.Additionally, he said Iran would back anyone opposed to Israel.“We will support and assist any nation or any group anywhere who opposes and fights the Zionist regime, and we do not hesitate to say this,” the Iranian leader said.Iran funds terrorist groups sworn to Israel’s destruction, including the Lebanon-based Hezbollah and Gaza-based Hamas.US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, left, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his Jerusalem residence, May 13, 2020 (Kobi Gideon/PMO)-The statement from Khamenei came after Netanyahu and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused him of backing the Nazi’s final solution.“He should know that any regime that threatens the destruction of the State of Israel faces a similar danger,” a statement from Netanyahu’s office said. The poster, shared on Khamenei’s website, showed people celebrating at the Temple Mount compound in Jerusalem after apparently capturing it from Israel as a Palestinian flag is raised over the Al-Aqsa Mosque.“Palestine Will Be Free. The final solution: Resistance until Freedom,” the text on the poster says. The poster later appeared to have been deleted from the website.Khamenei has called for Israel’s destruction on numerous occasions and frequently refers to Israel as a “cancerous tumor.”

Pompeo hopes Israel-Palestinian security ties persist, despite Abbas declaration-The Times of Israel-As PA says it’s no longer bound by agreements with Israel due to Netanyahu’s annexation vow, top US diplomat says he’s not sure how to interpret threat-By TOI staff and AFP-may 21,20-Today, 9:00 pm

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday he hopes security cooperation between Israel and the Palestinians will continue, after Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said the Palestinians were no longer bound by its agreements with Jerusalem and Washington.“We hope that the security arrangements will continue to be in place, that the work that’s done on the ground there to keep people in Israel and Palestinians safe will continue,” Pompeo said during a press conference at the State Department. He added that he was “not exactly sure” how to interpret Abbas’s declaration that the PA was ending all agreements as Israel seeks to annex portions of the West Bank. But I regret that’s he decided to abrogate these agreements,” Pompeo said.In a speech Tuesday in Ramallah, Abbas said his decision to sever all ties, including security coordination with Israel, was in response to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s vow to move forward with annexing parts of the West Bank that US President Donald Trump’s peace plan envisions will be part of Israel.Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas heads a leadership meeting at his headquarters, in the West Bank city of Ramallah, Tuesday, May 19, 2020. (Alaa Badarneh/Pool via AP)The Palestinians, who have boycotted the Trump administration since the 2017 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, have rejected the Trump peace proposal out of hand.“We ask the Israelis and the Palestinians that that would be the basis for negotiations between them. The Israelis have accepted that, the Palestinians have continued to refuse to simply just sit down and enter into negotiations based on President Trump’s Vision for Peace there,” Pompeo said.Pompeo, who visited Israel last week, demurred when asked if the Trump administration has been in contact with the PA, but said the Palestinians would benefit from the peace plan.Under the coalition agreement between Netanyahu’s Likud party and Defense Minister Benny Gantz’s Blue and White, the new government can move forward with applying Israeli sovereignty over settlements and the Jordan Valley as soon as July 1.As of Wednesday, it remained unclear whether Abbas’s declaration would be implemented or have any practical effect.Tareq Baconi of the International Crisis Group think tank said the Palestinian leadership had provided little clarity about what ending security coordination would mean.“The impact isn’t just freedom of movement, it is everything, even where food supply lines come from,” he said. “It can’t be dismantled overnight.”In reality, he said, Abbas was seeking to build pressure on Israel to tone down annexation plans.Hugh Lovatt, Israel-Palestine analyst at the European Council on Foreign Relations, agreed.“We have been here before, many times. Abbas has yet to follow through, emptying such threats of any potential deterrence,” he said.“Yet, as annexation looms his declaration should nonetheless be interpreted as one last desperate shot across the bow.”US President Donald Trump, left, listens as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, right, speaks during an event in the East Room of the White House in Washington, January 28, 2020, to announce the Trump administration’s much-anticipated plan to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh)-Netanyahu has been emboldened by the Trump plan to push ahead with annexing swathes of the West Bank, despite wide concerns in the rest of the world — including neighboring Jordan, a US ally that has made peace with the Jewish state. But Trump’s challenger in November’s presidential election, Democrat Joe Biden, on Tuesday declared his opposition to annexation, saying it would undermine hopes for peace.King Abdullah II of Jordan, one of only two Arab states to have signed a peace deal with Israel, warned last week annexation would put it on course for a “conflict” with his country.Former Israeli ambassador to Jordan, Oded Eran, said Israel was wary of jeopardizing relations with the king.Netanyahu’s centrist coalition partner Gantz is far less keen on annexation than the prime minister and could also hold it back, Eran said.Britain, Germany, Russia and other European governments have also come out in firm opposition to the annexation plans.

Quest for ‘super-duper’ missiles at heart of US rivalry with China, Russia-The Times of Israel-Pentagon says hypersonic weapons needed ‘to dominate future battlefields,’ but critics warn they could fuel dangerous new arms race-By Robert Burns-may 21,20-Today, 5:45 pms Air Force Academy's Department of Aeronautics, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. (Joshua Armstrong/US Air Force Academy via AP)

WASHINGTON (AP) — They fly at speeds of a mile a second or faster and maneuver in ways that make them extra difficult to detect and destroy in flight.US President Donald Trump calls them “super-duper” missiles though they’re better known as hypersonic weapons. And they are at the heart of Trump administration worries about China and Russia. For decades the United States has searched for ways to get ultra-fast flight right. But it has done so in fits and starts. Now, with China and Russia arguably ahead in this chase, the Trump administration is pouring billions of dollars a year into hypersonic offense and defense. The Pentagon makes no bones about their purpose.“Our ultimate goal is, simply, we want to dominate future battlefields,” Mark Lewis, the Pentagon’s director of defense research and engineering for modernization, told reporters in March.Critics argue that hypersonic weapons would add little to the United States’ ability to deter war. Some think they could ignite a new, destabilizing arms race.A look at hypersonic weapons:-What’s special about hypersonic? Two things make these weapons special: speed and maneuverability. Speed brings surprise, and maneuverability creates elusiveness. Together, those qualities could mean trouble for missile defenses.By generally agreed definition, a hypersonic weapon is one that flies at speeds in excess of Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound. Most American missiles, such as those launched from aircraft to hit other aircraft or ground targets, travel between Mach 1 and Mach 5.US President Donald Trump during a Cabinet Meeting in the East Room of the White House, May 19, 2020, in Washington. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)-Trump occasionally mentions his interest in hypersonic weapons, sometimes without using the term. In February he told governors visiting the White House: “We have the super-fast missiles — tremendous number of the super-fast. We call them ‘super-fast,’ where they’re four, five, six and even seven times faster than an ordinary missile. We need that because, again, Russia has some.”And last Friday, Trump told reporters, “We have no choice, we have to do it, with the adversaries we have out there,” mentioning China and Russia. He added, “I call it the super-duper missile.” He said he “heard” it travels 17 times faster than any other US missile. “It just got the go-ahead,” he added, although the Pentagon would not comment on that. How they work-The Pentagon is pursuing two main types of hypersonic weapons. One, called a hypersonic glide vehicle, is launched from a rocket. It then glides to a target, maneuvering at high speed to evade interception. The other is sometimes referred to as a hypersonic cruise missile. Capable of being launched from a fighter jet or bomber, it would be powered by a supersonic combustion ramjet, or scramjet, enabling the missile to fly and maneuver at lower altitudes. On March 19, the Pentagon flight-tested a hypersonic glide vehicle at its Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kauai, Hawaii. It deemed the test a success and “a major milestone towards the department’s goal of fielding hypersonic warfighting capabilities in the early- to mid-2020s.”Unlike Russia, the United States says it is not developing hypersonic weapons for use with a nuclear warhead. As a result, a US hypersonic weapon will need to be more accurate, posing additional technical challenges. In this photo taken from undated footage distributed by Russian Defense Ministry Press Service, an intercontinental ballistic missile lifts off from a truck-mounted launcher somewhere in Russia. (Russian Defense Ministry Press Service via AP)As recently as 2017, the Pentagon was spending about $800 million on hypersonic weapon programs. That nearly doubled the following year, then rose to $2.4 billion a year later and hit $3.4 billion this year. The administration’s 2021 budget request, which has yet to be approved by Congress, requests $3.6 billion.Although this is a priority for Pentagon spending, it could become limited by the budgetary pressures that are expected as a result of multitrillion-dolla federal spending to counter the coronavirus pandemic. Why they matter-Top Pentagon officials say it’s about Russia and, even more so, China.“By almost any metric that I can construct, China is certainly moving out ahead of us,” Lewis, the Pentagon research and engineering official, said Tuesday. “In large measure, that’s because we did their homework for them.” Basic research in this field was published by the US years ago, “and then we kind of took our foot off the gas,” although the Pentagon is now on a path to catch up and surpass China, he added.China is pushing for hypersonic weapon breakthroughs. It has conducted a number of successful tests of the DF-17, a medium-range ballistic missile designed to launch hypersonic glide vehicles. According to a Congressional Research Service report in March, US intelligence analysts assess that the DF-17 missile has a range of approximately 1,000 to 1,500 miles (1,600 to 2,400 kilometers) and could be deployed this year.Russia last December said its first hypersonic missile unit had become operational. It is the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle, which Moscow says can fly at Mach 27, or 27 times faster than the speed of sound, and could make sharp maneuvers to bypass missile defenses. It has been fitted to existing Soviet-built intercontinental ballistic missiles and in the future could be fitted to the more powerful Sarmat ICBM, which is still in developmentChinese military vehicles carrying DF-17 at a parade to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of Communist China in Beijing, October 1, 2019. (AP Photo/Ng Han Guan)But are they necessary? As with other strategic arms, like nuclear weapons and naval fleets, for example, hypersonic weapons are seen by the Trump administration as a must-have if peer competitors have them. But critics see hypersonic weapons as overkill and potentially an extension of the arms race that led to an excessive nuclear buildup by the US and the Soviet Union during the Cold War.There also is worry about these technologies spreading beyond the US, Russia and China.“Their proliferation beyond these three nations could result in lesser powers setting their strategic forces on hair-trigger states of readiness and more credibly being able to threaten attacks on major powers,” the RAND Corp., a federally funded research organization, said in a 2017 report.

13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.

Russia, UN and Vatican condemn unilateral Israeli annexation plan-The Times of Israel-UN envoy: 'Israel must abandon threats of annexation'-International community steps up denunciations of proposal to apply Israeli sovereignty to parts of West Bank-By TOI staff and Agencies-may 21,20-Today, 8:10 pm

International opposition to Israeli annexation of parts of the West Bank continued to gain momentum Wednesday as representatives of the UN, Russia and the Vatican all expressed strong objections to the plan that could be implemented as early as July.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he will advance plans to extend Israeli sovereignty to all settlements and to the Jordan Valley — some 30% of the West Bank — as a key policy of his new coalition government. Under the terms of the coalition deal, he is free to advance unilateral annexation from July 1, even though his key partner, Blue and White party leader Benny Gantz, opposes unilateral action and would prefer to negotiate with the other affected parties such as the Palestinian Authority and Jordan.Speaking at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, UN special Mideast envoy Nickolay Mladenov called on Israel to drop plans to annex parts of the West Bank while telling Palestinians to resume talks with the so-called Quartet, comprising the US, Russia, the EU and the United Nations.“Israel must abandon threats of annexation,” Mladenov said.-“I call on my colleagues in the Middle East Quartet to work with the UN and quickly come forward with a proposal that will enable the Quartet to take up its mediation role and work jointly with countries in the region to advance the prospect of peace,” he added.Nikolay Mladenov, United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, at Yad Vashem in August 28, 2017. (Yonatan Sindel/Flash90)-Following the Security Council meeting and separate talks with Palestinian officials, the Vatican said that Israel’s possible annexation of large parts of the West Bank could further compromise peace talks.Respect for international law and UN resolutions was an “indispensable element for the two peoples to live side by side,” the Vatican said after a meeting between chief foreign policy official Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher and Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat.“The Holy See is following the situation closely, and expresses concern about any future actions that could further compromise dialogue,” the Vatican said in a statement. It added that the Roman Catholic city-state hoped a resolution could soon be found through direct talks “so that peace may finally reign in the Holy Land, so beloved by Jews and Christians and Muslims.”Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday afternoon relayed Moscow’s “strong objection” to the Israeli government’s West Bank annexation plans in a conversation with his newly appointed counterpart Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, according to Israel’s Channel 13.Israel’s unity government supports a plan launched by US President Donald Trump that would allow annexation of large parts of the West Bank.Trump’s plan has already been rejected by the Palestinians and PA President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday said he was voiding all agreements with Israel and the US as a result. But Netanyahu said this week that annexation “won’t distance us from peace, it will bring us closer. In this February 18, 2020 photo, a view of the West Bank settlement of Ma’ale Efraim on the hills of the Jordan Valley. (AP/Ariel Schalit)-According to the proposed plan, the US will recognize an Israeli application of sovereignty over parts of the West Bank following the completion of a survey conducted by a joint US-Israel mapping committee and Israel’s acceptance of both a four-year freeze of the areas earmarked for a future Palestinian state and a commitment to negotiate with the Palestinians based on the terms of Trump’s peace deal. The latest round of condemnations come after the European Union’s top diplomat on Monday warned Israel against annexing parts of the West Bank, saying the bloc would not recognize any changes to the 1967 lines not agreed upon in a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians. In a statement congratulating Israel on the formation of a new government, Josep Borrell also said the EU viewed Netanyahu’s commitment to push forward with annexation with “grave concern.”“We strongly urge Israel to refrain from any unilateral decision that would lead to the annexation of any occupied Palestinian territory and would be, as such, contrary to international law,” he said.Presenting his new government on Sunday, Netanyahu said Israel’s law should be extended over West Bank land.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presenting the 35th government of Israel to the Knesset, May 17, 2020. (Knesset/Adina Veldman)-“These regions are the cradle of the Jewish people. It is time to extend Israel’s law over them. This step won’t bring us further away from peace, it will get us closer. The truth is, and everyone knows it, that the hundreds of thousands of settlers in Judea and Samaria will always stay put in any future deal,” Netanyahu said.Several European nations led by France, and including Ireland, Sweden, Belgium, Spain and Luxembourg, have reportedly expressed support for threats of punitive action in a bid to deter the new Israeli government from carrying out annexation with a green light from Washington.Proposed steps include announcing that Israel would be prevented from entering into trade agreements with the bloc, receiving EU grants or participating in other forms of cooperation with the union. It is not clear if the steps would apply to future agreements or freeze existing ones.As part of their coalition agreement, Netanyahu and Gantz agreed that the government can begin moving forward with applying Israeli sovereignty to settlements and the Jordan Valley after July 1, a move expected to enjoy backing from a majority of lawmakers in the Knesset.Though Gantz opposes unilateral action, he also says he backs the Trump plan, and acquiesced to Netanyahu’s demand to allow the matter to be brought to a vote in parliament.

Russia said pushing ‘mini-summit’ to mend ties between US, Palestinians-The Times of Israel-TV report says EU, UN also back proposed meeting in Geneva, viewing it as opportunity to prevent West Bank annexation under Trump plan; unclear if Israel will get invite-By TOI staff-may 21,20-Today, 11:48 pm

Russia is reportedly seeking to arrange a meeting in the coming weeks between US and Palestinian officials to help renew ties between Washington and Ramallah, which have frayed during US President Donald Trump’s presidency.Citing unnamed Western diplomats, Channel 13 news reported Wednesday the planned meeting in Geneva is also aimed at preventing an escalation of violence in the West Bank and allowing the Palestinian Authority to propose changes to US President Donald Trump’s Israeli-Palestinian peace plan, which it has rejected out of hand. The European Union and United Nations were also part of the Russian effort, viewing it as an opportunity to jump-start peace talks and halt Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s vow to annex parts of the West Bank that would become part of Israel under the US plan, the report said.“The only way to stop annexation is to renew contact between the Palestinians and the US government,” a Western diplomat was quoted saying. The PA has boycotted the White House since Trump’s 2017 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and the transfer of the US embassy to the city, the eastern part of which Palestinians claim for a future state. The US has since cut hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to the Palestinians and the UN agency that supports Palestinian refugees, and closed the PLO representative office in Washington, further drawing the ire of the PA.Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, left, speaks with Russian President Vladimir Putin during their meeting at the Kremlin in Moscow on July 14, 2018. (AFP/Yuri Kadobnov)According to the TV report, Russia was seeking to get around the PA’s boycott of the Trump administration by making the meeting a “mini-summit” that would also include representatives from the Middle East Quartet — the EU, the UN, the US and Russia — and officials from Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the Palestinian Authority. It was unclear if Israel would also be invited, or how such a summit would be held amid the coronavirus pandemic. The proposed meeting was discussed in a Tuesday phone call between Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and US peace envoy Avi Berkowitz, the report said.Sources familiar with the content of the call told the network that Berkowitz didn’t rule out the initiative, but conditioned American participation on having the meeting deal with the Trump plan and the Palestinians’ suggested changes to the proposal.Bogdanov also reportedly phoned PLO Secretary-General Saeb Erekat to discuss the meeting, with the senior Palestinian official not rejecting it but also not giving a definitive answer on whether the PA would attend. The report came as new Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi spoke with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov for the first time on Wednesday.During the phone call, Lavrov stressed Moscow’s opposition to Israeli annexation of West Bank territory, the Haaretz daily reported.A readout of the phone call from the Foreign Ministry didn’t mention annexation, which the coalition deal between Netanyahu’s Likud party and Blue and White allows the new government to move forward with from July 1.Prevention and reprisal-Amid growing calls for Israel not to apply sovereignty over settlements and the Jordan Valley, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Wednesday that France was working with other European states to discourage Israel from annexation.During a parliament meeting, Le Drian said this included formulating a plan to prevent annexation and retaliate if Israel goes through with the move.“For the past few days we have held several video conferences with European colleagues… with a view to deciding on a joint preventive action and eventually a reprisal if such a decision were taken,” he was quoted saying by France 24.Jean-Yves Le Drian attends a working session during the foreign ministers of G7 nations’ meeting in Dinard, on April 6, 2019. (AFP/Pool/Stephane Mahe)-France was also among the countries to speak out against annexation at a UN Security Council meeting Wednesday.During the session, the UN’s Middle East peace envoy Nickolay Mladenov called on Israel to drop plans to annex parts of the West Bank, while telling Palestinians to resume talks with the Quartet.Following the Security Council meeting and separate talks with Palestinian officials, the Vatican said that Israel’s possible annexation of large parts of the West Bank could further compromise peace talks. The latest round of condemnations come after the European Union’s top diplomat on Monday warned Israel against annexation, saying the bloc would not recognize any changes to the 1967 lines not agreed upon in a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians.Agencies contributed to this report.

12 Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon:
13 Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.
14 And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters’ vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not spare: so that there shall not be found in the bursting of it a sherd to take fire from the hearth, or to take water withal out of the pit.
15 For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.
16 But ye said, No; for we will flee upon horses; therefore shall ye flee: and, We will ride upon the swift; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift.

Jerusalem Day march to be replaced with 700-person chain around Old City-The Times of Israel-Under coronavirus restrictions, annual parade celebrating full Israeli control over capital will not pass through Muslim Quarter; 450 people to attend ceremony at Western Wall-By TOI staff-may 21,20-Today, 4:44 pmolice and organizers came to an agreement Wednesday on holding a smaller, more coronavirus-friendly Jerusalem Day march on Thursday, to mark the anniversary of Israel taking control of the Temple Mount compound and the eastern parts of the city during the 1967 Six Day War.

The day is usually marked by a right-wing march through the Old City’s Muslim Quarter ending at the Western Wall, and has in the past been blamed for increased tensions between Jews and Arabs.According to the agreement reached with the Israel Police, instead of a march through the Old City’s narrow warren of streets, 700 people will be allowed to form a human chain, with two meters between links, around many of the Old City gates, organizers said in a statement. In addition, a convoy of cars will drive around Jerusalem and circle the Old City. The events will culminate in a ceremony at the Western Wall attended by 450 people who registered in advance.Organizers had sought permission for a 3,000 person human chain stretching from the center of western Jerusalem through the Old City. The agreement comes after a High Court hearing on the matter.Jewish Orthodox marchers gather to celebrate Jerusalem Day at the Old City’s Damascus gate in Jerusalem on June 2, 2019. (MENAHEM KAHANA/AFP)-The so-called Flag March, in which primarily religious teenagers march through the Old City decked in white and blue, has raised tensions in the past over its route through the Muslim Quarter.Palestinian shopkeepers with stores along the route are forced to shutter their businesses during the parade, and residents of the Muslim Quarter are advised to stay indoors. In previous years, the march has sparked sporadic incidents of violence between Palestinians and Israeli revelers. After Israel captured East Jerusalem in the Six Day War, it annexed it and declared the entire city the undivided capital of Israel. However, the move has not been recognized by much of the international community, with the exception of the US.Palestinians see East Jerusalem as the capital of their future independent state, and the future status of the city is among the most contentious issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Critics say Canada's silence speaks volumes as Israel races towards annexation-[CBC]-May 21, 2020

On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. On Tuesday, he spoke by phone with Israeli "alternate" Prime Minister Benny Gantz.Israel has two prime ministers who loathe each other because that arrangement was the only way to form a halfway-functioning government in a polarized country that staged three elections in 12 months without producing a clear result. The two PMs have agreed not so much to share power as to operate two parallel administrations at the same time. Many Israeli political observers expect the two men to continue their in-fighting on a different plane. But there is one long-term project of Netanyahu's that Gantz has promised not to oppose after July 1: the formal annexation by Israel of part of the West Bank, occupied by Israel since 1967 but never recognized as part of Israel by any government.Trudeau has had separate conversations with both Israeli PMs. But if the Canadian government's anodyne readouts of the calls are accurate, he had exactly the same conversation with both men.Canada won't recognize the annexationThe words "annexation", "West Bank" and "occupied territories" do not appear anywhere in the readouts. Although government officials who spoke to CBC News pointed to a passing reference to the "two-state solution", they were unable to say that the prime minister had warned his Israeli counterpart not to proceed with the annexation. Two officials did tell CBC News there is no chance that Canada will recognize the annexation.Global Affairs spokesman Adam Austen told CBC News that "Canada is very concerned that Israel moving forward with unilateral annexation would be damaging to peace negotiations and contrary to international law.  This could lead to further insecurity for Israelis and Palestinians at a critical time for peace and stability in the region."But the Trudeau government, which has largely continued the UN voting pattern of the Harper government rather than those of the Chrétien and Martin governments, does not appear keen on challenging Israel. In fact, the readout says Canada is seeking closer ties: "Prime Minister Trudeau expressed Canada's continued support for Israel as a friend and ally, and the two leaders discussed ways to continue strengthening their bilateral relationship ..."No support for annexation in Ottawa-No major Canadian federal party appears to support recognition of annexation. Conservative foreign affairs critic Leona Alleslev told CBC News that "Conservatives continue to believe in the two-state solution, as part of a negotiated settlement to this conflict, as well as the right of Israel to defend itself and secure its borders."The NDP's Jack Harris pointed out that "other nations, including the U.K., Norway, Ireland and France, have made strong declarations" against annexation."Now that the incoming government of Israel has committed to a plan to annex lands in the occupied territories, Canada must speak out and condemn such action," he said in a statement. "It would be a clear violation of international law and the Geneva Convention to which Canada is party."The Green Party caucus sent a letter to Trudeau earlier this month asking him to apply the same standards to Israel's proposed annexation that his government applied to Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014."The attempt by the Netanyahu government to take this action while the world is busy dealing with an unprecedented global public health crisis is reprehensible," said the letter.Hawks against hawks-The annexation plan has split opinion in Israel. The Israeli peace camp rejects it as the last nail in the coffin of the Oslo Accords, but the plan is also opposed by a large part of Israel's hawkish security establishment.A group of former Israel Defence Forces generals recently warned that "unilateral annexation has the potential to ignite a serious conflagration" and "any partial annexation is likely to set in motion a chain reaction over which Israel will have no control."But the proposal is popular with the Trump administration, which has encouraged Netanyahu to move forward. In fact the annexation map is being drawn up by a joint U.S.-Israeli "mapping team" that includes U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, his adviser Aryeh Lightstone and C. Scott Leith, a senior adviser on the U.S. National Security Council.Israel's supporters unconvinced-Some Israeli observers have argued President Trump, rather than PM Netanyahu, is driving the annexation schedule in order to have something to show his evangelical supporters in time for the presidential election in November. But the move may be more popular with American evangelicals than with American Jews.Strong supporters of Israel, including Republicans like Daniel Pipes and the Democratic Majority for Israel, have come out against it."We cannot overstate the long-term damage such a move would have on the U.S.-Israel alliance," Mark Mellman, a longtime strategist for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), warned in letters sent to both of Israel's new prime ministers.'No fuss being made'The doubts over the wisdom of annexation being felt in Israel and the U.S. may be mirrored in the pro-Israel community in Canada, which hasn't greeted the proposal with any real enthusiasm. CBC News asked the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs for its take on the issue, but it declined to comment. From the other side of the debate, though, the group Independent Jewish Voices, which opposes the occupation of the West Bank, called the plan "a test to countries like Canada which claim to stand for a rules-based international order, but in reality only do so selectively, whenever it is politically expedient."IJV's Corey Balsam said merely withholding recognition isn't a good enough response from a government that claims to be a guardian of international law."If there's no fuss being made, then Israel will continue annexing land," he told CBC News. "At this point, what Israel requires is punitive measures where it's being deterred. That's where the conversation is globally, especially in Europe, where allies like Ireland and France are exploring avenues to deter Israel. Not just staying silent and refusing to recognize annexation."Free trade with annexed territory?Balsam notes that Canada imports dates from Jewish settlements in the Jordan Valley that are on the list of lands to be annexed. "The government may say that they won't recognize annexation, but will they modify the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement (CIFTA) to exclude those territories from privileged trade status?" he asked. "I highly doubt that". CBC News asked officials in Global Affairs and the Prime Minister's Office about that issue but was told that they had no comment on the matter.Canada currently allows products from illegal West Bank settlements to enter the country duty-free under CIFTA, arguing that Israel and the West Bank are part of a customs union agreed to mutually by Israel and the Palestinian Authority. That agreement would no longer exist following annexation.Balsam criticized the statement issued after Trudeau's call to Netanyahu for its talk of "increasing ties, improving relations, adding to trade and collaboration.""You'd think that if Canada's trying to send a strong message that they're not happy with the direction Israel is going, they would perhaps suggest that type of collaboration is based upon Israel not annexing territory," he said.Double standardMichael Lynk, the UN's Special Rapporteur for the Occupied Territories (who also teaches law at the University of Western Ontario), said the Trudeau government's mild reaction to Israeli annexation plans stand in stark contrast to its response to Russia's unilateral annexation of Crimea in 2014.That provoked a flood of retaliatory measures that have only escalated since. When she was Canada's foreign affairs minister, Chrystia Freeland repeatedly spoke about the need to defend what she has called "the vital international norm" established after the Second World War that no country should be allowed to alter its borders by force."Today's sanctions demonstrate that Canada and the international community are ready to impose costs on Russia when it ignores international law and the rules-based international order," she said last year on the fifth anniversary of the Crimean annexation, as she announced that Canada had increased the number of Russian individuals and organizations facing sanctions for that act to more than 400.Lynk said the Trudeau government appears to be much less interested in upholding international law and the rules-based system when it comes to Israel."Russia was expelled from the G8. There was an import and export ban imposed on the goods manufactured in Crimea," he said. "There were a range of sanctions against Russia and individual asset freezes and travel bans were imposed on Russia as well."There is no daylight between the Russian annexation of Crimea, and the Israeli annexation of any of the territory it conquered in 1967. For Canada to remain silent … tells me that Canada is applying different standards to situations that are essentially the same."It's surprising to me that Canada has lost its voice on this, given its commitment to a rules-based international order."

JAMES 5:1-3
1 Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.

EZEKIEL 7:19
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed:(CONFISCATED) their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.

Cashless after Covid-19? By: Kanika Saigal Published on: Thursday, April 02, 2020 The number of cashless transactions is rising as the coronavirus pandemic limits the use of physical cash. Order Kanika Saigal payments_780 Covid19_shutterstock-600x150 Read all Euromoney coronavirus coverage When the World Health Organization released a statement on March 9 recommending that people turn to cashless transactions to fight the spread of Covid-19, a number of governments and retailers across the world took action. In China, thousands of banknotes were destroyed or disinfected to eliminate the spread of the virus. South Korea followed suit, and in the US, the Federal Reserve has started storing banknotes that have come in from Asia before recirculating them back into the economy. Canadians, however, have taken a different approach. Rumours persist that some people have been shoving banknotes into washing machines to rid them of the virus – taking advantage of the fact that their ‘paper’ money is made of plastic. This takes money laundering to a whole new level. Some retailers have banned the use of cash in their stores to keep employees and customers safe, opting for contactless payments instead. Meanwhile, for those confined to their homes, online shopping is a lifeline. Even the most unwilling are keen to adapt. Manish Kohli, head of cash management at Citi, says from his home office in New York that even his wife –previously hostile to mobile money – has started to use Venmo to transfer funds to members of the community who have been braving the streets to get goods for others in need. "People are adapting to the new normal," he says. Necessity over convenience Digital payments, once born out of convenience, have become a necessity for some. Yes, there might still be a number of people who hoard cash – as is often the case in times of crisis – but others will cease to see the point if they are not able to use physical money to buy essential goods and services. Luckily, we live in a time where much of the infrastructure required to complete an online purchase is already in place. This may not have been possible even ten years ago. Cash managers and payments experts agree that payment volumes will be down across the board. But they also agree that the number of digital transactions relative to physical cash transactions will soar as more and more countries go into lockdown. Santosh Tripathy 160x186 Santosh Tripathy, SmartStream "It is probably too early for the data to tell us this, but most of us in the payments space are certain that this is the case," says Santosh Tripathy, practice lead, digital payments with financial transaction management company SmartStream Technologies. "In this environment, cash is losing its shine," he says. This could be the push needed for some countries to become truly cashless. "It's no longer inconceivable for entire countries to run on digital cash – we are already seeing this play out," says Victor Penna, global head of treasury solutions at Standard Chartered. "Most people have access to a mobile phone – which can also act as a digital wallet – and a number of central banks are thinking about introducing digital currencies. This is how we can boost financial inclusion and support the most vulnerable in society." "One good thing to come out of this crisis is that I think more and more economies will start going cashless," says Kohli. Benefits and challenges There are plenty of benefits to going cashless: digital payments are convenient and – in current circumstances – are increasingly necessary. More importantly, however, they are a lot cheaper to process than their cash equivalents. Take one example: In India, 1.7% of GDP – or $210 billion – is spent on printing, storing and distributing cash. If all payments were digital, Tripathy argues that the cost would be a fraction of this. There is also the argument that digital offerings will boost financial inclusion, as more and more individuals are able to open bank accounts online and transact digitally without ever having to enter a physical bank branch – difficult at times like this in most developed economies, almost impossible for rural populations in emerging markets that live far from their nearest town or city. But the transition from cash to cashless isn’t all that straightforward. Online payments may seem easy enough, but there still remains a lack of standardization in the system that delays payments and creates bottlenecks. For example, real-time payments within the UK are a reality, but challenge your bank to make an instant payment to a recipient in India or Brazil, for instance, and delays are inevitable. If any one country was to move entirely towards digital payments, bank liquidity would be essential because people and businesses need to have confidence in the banking sector - Santosh Tripathy, SmartStream Fintechs such as Transferwise, WorldRemit and Revolut have plugged some of the gaps, but this often means that an individual may have a number of different accounts with a number of different payment providers and banks – which arguably removes the convenience that digital payments offered in the first place. Moreover, capacity is often limited and large transactions by multinational corporates still require strict due diligence and bank support for completion. Until application programming interfaces are much more commonly used, the fragmentation in the payments space will be another barrier to fully cashless societies. In addition – and perhaps most importantly within the current context – bank liquidity will be essential to the success of implementing and maintaining a cashless society. "If any one country was to move entirely towards digital payments, bank liquidity would be essential because people and businesses need to have confidence in the banking sector," says Tripathy. "A cashless society would mean that, hopefully, there wouldn't be a run on the banks, but individuals still want to be confident in the fact that if they wanted to withdraw their money from their accounts, they could," he says. Liquidity is essential for people to remain confident in the whole financial system. Following the global financial crisis, banks' financial buffers have become much more robust, but liquidity may soon dwindle as banks introduce a number of measures to prop up corporate clients and the economy, including emergency funding for repo markets, debt restructuring, mortgage holidays, new credit lines, huge credit drawdowns and more. This is the paradox we face right now: while a viral pandemic is conducive to the establishment of cashless societies, the pressure on banks is not.Full article: https://www.euromoney.com/article/b1l0fc800bd85v/cashless-after-covid-19?copyrightInfo=true

Her name was Mary”-A Marian reflection-Filoni: "Her name was Mary"-Filoni: "Her name was Mary"fernando filoni*Pubblicato il-21 Maggio 2020-Ultima modifica-14:05

May is the month dedicated to Mary. The Congregation of Rites in 1933 recognized the title of "Queen of Palestine", which became particularly dear to the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem; that act welcomed the desire of the Latin Patriarch Luigi Barlassina who in 1920, that is a hundred years ago, invoked her for the first time with that title, before going on to build a shrine in Deir Rafat in 1927.The Evangelist Luke notes her name for the first time when he speaks of the mission entrusted by the Eternal One to the Angel Gabriel who went to Nazareth.Mary was a common name in Palestine: the sister of Moses and Aaron was called Miriam (Mary), and, at the time of Jesus, we know the mother of James (the younger) and Joseph with the same name, Mary of Bethany and Mary of Magdala. In Nazareth, among the friends of the village Mary was known as Joseph’s young betrothed; after the birth of the Son she will also be known as the mother of Jesus (cf. Mt 13:55; Mk 6:3). Nazareth was the land where Mary had lived, had played and dreamed as an adolescent, knew sacred history, exercised her faith in the Most High, accepted his will; in Nazareth the Angel Gabriel asked her for consent to become the mother of the Son of God; after Bethlehem and the flight to Egypt, she returned to live with Joseph. She always carried two 'secrets' in her heart: the first linked to her distress at hearing herself called 'full of grace' by the Angel, and the second in learning of the conception of a son while being a virgin. These were intimate and profound issues, not easy to communicate and comment on. Luke mentions it because, apparently, one day she spoke about it and he wanted to leave a trace in his story about the incarnation of the Son of God. It was indispensable, because it concerned the divine origin of Jesus and the very work of the redemption. Mary's initial 'Yes' thus became the starting point of a process that would end with the last 'Yes' under the cross; the two 'fiat' became inseparable. An unforgettable moment in Mary's life was her meeting with Elizabeth already in the advanced stages of pregnancy; Elizabeth blessed Mary: Blessed are you among women, blessed are you who believed in the fulfillment of the words of the Lord (Lk 1:42.45). A memorable moment, surprising words, memories that became life and companions of reference, even in the darkest hour of her life. Everyone, learning the first of the Marian prayers, repeats in supplication and praise: Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb.Mary rarely appears in the public life of her Son; she remains in the penumbra; the evangelist John says she was present at the wedding feast of Cana in Galilee, where she is referred to as "his mother" (Jn 2:1); Mark, on another occasion, mentions it in the same way, when relatives sent for Jesus who was teaching and he seemed to almost escape the blood relationship to establish a new one: “Whoever does God’s will be my brother and sister and mother"(Mk 3:35).Already in Cana of Galilee, calling her with the term "woman" rather than "mother", Jesus seemed to distance himself from her; but on the Cross, "Woman, here is your son!" (Jn 19:26), the temporal relationship between Mary and Jesus was concluded with the handing over of her to John, "Here is your mother!" (Jn 19:27); there her new maternal mission was defined. With the entrustment to John - "from that time on, this disciple took her into his home" (Jn 19:27) - Mary becomes part of the new family that was being established. Indeed, from then on she will belong inseparably to the Church. And in this capacity we find her mentioned for the last time in the New Testament, while she was persevering in prayer with the Apostles on the day of Pentecost (cf. Acts 1:14). Mary, therefore, takes on a dimension, that is not only Christological (for the physical motherhood and being the first educator of her son together with Joseph), but also ecclesiological; in this context, it should be noted that, with her femininity, she balanced the presence of the Apostles since the acceptance of grace had taken place from the beginning in the female dimension. Here we like to quote a significant and illuminating expression of Benedict XVI, who wrote that "the Church, in its juridical structure, is founded on Peter and the Eleven, but in the concrete form of ecclesial life it is always (...) women who open the doors to the Lord, who accompany him even under the cross and are able to meet him as a resurrected person"(Benedict XVI, Jesus of Nazareth - From entering Jerusalem to the resurrection). If Mary was no longer alone under the cross, neither would she be for eternity; She will be the most precious part of the new family, the Church, which in the person of John had welcomed her with immense affection; but above all she will never leave the Church. In fact, we find her always and everywhere and, in our times, in Lourdes in the context of the dogmatic declaration of the Immaculate Conception, in Fatima as a sign of hope after the atrocious first great war, in Sheshan (China) in comforting persecuted Christians , in Czestochowa as champion of the Polish nation, in Guadalupe in identifying with the new populations of Latin America, in Deir Rafat as Queen of Palestine; and then again in Aparecida (Brazil), in Vailankanni (India), in Altötting (Bavaria), in Mariazell (Austria), in Loreto, in Pompeii, in Algiers; moreover, she also assumes the face of the Yazides humiliated and sold in the Isis markets of Mosul and Raqqa, of women disfigured with acid at the hands of mad and violent men, of victims of femicides, of mothers sterilized without their knowledge, of victims of the trafficking of sex, of women deprived of dignity and freedom; and still mother of all the marginalized, of the poor made such by drugs, by the lack of work and by the innumerable human injustices, as well as support for all those mothers who offered their existence for their children; finally, a non-secondary icon of the countless consecrated women who have a caress for everyone with their prayer of spiritual consolation. We are certain that Mary's faith gives us Jesus, but also that she gives us to God.*Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem

MICAH 4:1,6-13
1 But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.
6  In that day, saith the LORD, will I assemble her that halteth, and I will gather her that is driven out, and her that I have afflicted;
7  And I will make her that halted a remnant, and her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the LORD shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth, even for ever.
8  And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion; the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem.
9  Now why dost thou cry out aloud? is there no king in thee? is thy counsellor perished? for pangs have taken thee as a woman in travail.
10  Be in pain, and labour to bring forth, O daughter of Zion, like a woman in travail: for now shalt thou go forth out of the city, and thou shalt dwell in the field, and thou shalt go even to Babylon; there shalt thou be delivered; there the LORD shall redeem thee from the hand of thine enemies.
11  Now also many nations are gathered against thee, that say, Let her be defiled, and let our eye look upon Zion.
12  But they know not the thoughts of the LORD, neither understand they his counsel: for he shall gather them as the sheaves into the floor.
13  Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion: for I will make thine horn iron, and I will make thy hoofs brass: and thou shalt beat in pieces many people: and I will consecrate their gain unto the LORD, and their substance unto the Lord of the whole earth.

For more articles like this, follow us @euromoney on Twitter.a teenage tourist visiting Jerusalem in the mid-Sixties, I found the signs warning “Danger — Frontier ahead!” and “Snipers [nearby] — stay out of middle of the street!” rather superfluous. Who wouldn’t keep a low profile when up ahead, in the very center of the Holy City, Jordanian troopers stood with rifles at the ready?

For 19 years, from 1948 to 1967, Jerusalem was severed in two along an arbitrary line called the “kav ironi” (urban line). The partition was wrought with tensions and absurdities, for it split neighborhoods, streets and even houses down the middle. Jews were evicted from their homes and synagogues in the Old City, and the sacred Western Wall was officially beyond reach.

During that period people on both sides were injured in hundreds of stone-throwing incidents. And every so often an Israeli was shot by what the Jordanians would excuse as momentary psychosis on the part of a soldier (this is the source of the term “resident psychotic,” or, in Hebrew, hameshuga hatoran).Jerusalem Day, held this year on Thursday and Friday, celebrates the reunification of the Holy City 53 years ago. Not a bad time to recall those frustrating years when Jerusalem was divided.Israeli troops at the Government House in the Old City of Jerusalem after they took over the Jordan-held part of the city following heavy fighting, June 6, 1967. (AP/IDF)-The “resident psychotic” created a number of incidents with a tragic end, including the 1956 massacre of four archeologists in Kibbutz Ramat Rachel.-Like a rock-Another heartbreaking event took place on July 4, 1962. Early in the War of Independence, Israel conquered Mount Zion. But the walled Old City, held by Jordan, was only a few dozen meters away. In order to keep a foothold on their side of the border, Israeli forces regularly patrolled a little alley between the mountain and the Old City walls. In one of those moments that the Jordanians liked to call “crazy,” a Jordanian soldier shot, and killed, Captain Avshalom Sela, commander of the unit that was on patrol near the southwestern corner of the walls.Captain Sela’s last name translates into Hebrew as “rock.” So it is no coincidence that a memorial to the captain, who was preparing to enter University after his service, is a large, smooth rock sprawled on the slopes of Mount Zion. But it wasn’t a “crazed” Jordanian who killed Lt. Colonel George Flint on Mount Scopus, a height in northern Jerusalem that enjoyed a dubious special status as an Israeli demilitarized zone.On May 26, 1958, Jordanian soldiers fired at Israelis on patrol in the Mount Scopus Botanical Gardens. The Jordanians refused to stop shooting long enough for the Israelis to evacuated their wounded, lying out in the open, to a hospital. Finally a cease-fire was announced. Immediately, Flint, the Canadian chairman of the Jordanian-Israeli Ceasefire Committee, bravely headed for the wounded. Although he carried a white flag, he was cold-bloodedly murdered by Jordanian bullets.Flint had intended to return home at the end of the year, and to publish a book about his experiences in Palestine. The title he had planned for the book: “Blessed are the Peacemakers.”A two-story shomera, or guard tower, in the Botanical Gardens on Mount Scopus is a memorial to Lieutenant-Colonel George Flint and the four Israelis who died during an attack on the site. (Shmuel Bar-Am)Thousands of years ago, an Israelite farmer would build a watchtower — “shomera” in Hebrew — in his fields. Isaiah 21:8, reads “O Lord, I stand continually on the watchtower by day, and I am stationed every night at my guard post.”That’s why the two-story shomera that stands in the Botanical Gardens on Mount Scopus is such an appropriate memorial to Flint and the four Israelis who died during that unprovoked attack.A blurry map-Between the wars in 1948 and 1967 tensions often reached ridiculous new heights. They were the direct result of the temporary borders created in 1948 during a meeting between Moshe Dayan, commander of Israel’s forces in Jerusalem, and his opposite number, Abdullah Tal of Jordan.Expecting to get together again for revisions, they wrote within the agreement that they “assume there will be further discussions… [and changes].” Yet the preliminary lines on their map, written with soft grease pencils which expanded from the heat and blurred over time, became permanent borders.UN personnel and representatives of Israel, Trans-Jordan and Egypt pore over a map of Jerusalem at the residence of the Syrian Catholic archbishop near Damascus Gate, Jerusalem, August 22, 1948. So for the 19 years that Jerusalem was divided, one side of the street was in Jordan, and the other was in Israel. The Bathroom Affair-Although there could be friendly acts between people on both sides of the street, every tiny change in the status quo gave rise to complaints and condemnations. One Israeli family that lived 50 meters from a Jordanian army position had only an outdoor latrine. When the political situation was tense it became dangerous to walk into in the yard, so in 1965, a few days before Yom Kippur, the family began building an indoor bathroom. On Yom Kippur morning an Israeli representative to the Mixed Armistice Committee received an urgent summons to appear: the Jordanians claimed that Israel had violated the status quo. As this was the holiest day of the Jewish year, the Israeli tried to delay the meeting. But the Jordanians replied that they couldn’t be responsible for what might happen from their side. The Jerusalem house that sparked the so-called “Bathroom Affair” in 1965. (Shmuel Bar-Am) Incredibly, on Yom Kippur, the Mixed Armistice Committee (which included Israeli, Jordanian and United Nations representatives) sat for 18 hours discussing bathrooms. Thirty-six recorded pages of these “crucial” talks still exist. Israel was condemned, in the end, but the family got their bathroom in what is still known, today, as the Bathroom Affair.A papal roadIn 1964 Pope Paul VI announced that he would like to visit Mount Zion. At the time, a narrow dirt path along the slopes led to the mountain’s holy sites. The path was located partly in no-man’s land, with one end in Israeli territory and the other in Jordanian.Prior to the Pope’s arrival Israel decided to turn the path into a paved road so it would be easier for his car to reach the Cenacle, the traditional Christian site of Jesus’ Last Supper. The Jordanians didn’t object, and the road was prepared for his visit. After he left, Christian pilgrims flocked to Mount Zion and traffic jams were common. In 1966 Israel began widening the road, taking great care not to touch any Jordanian-held property. But oh!, what a ruckus ensued when Israeli bulldozers unwittingly tossed a few clods of dirt onto Jordan’s side of the border. The Jordanians complained to the Ceasefire Commission — and work on the road was stopped. The Jerusalem road constructed for a papal visit in 1964. (Shmuel Bar-Am)-With Mount Zion on the front lines adjacent to the Old City, Israel set up a base on the grounds and in the buildings of the Bishop Gobat School (today the Jerusalem University College) located on its the slopes. But there was a problem: the wide Hinnom Valley lay between Western Jerusalem and Mount Zion.-Across the valley-How was the army to get troops and supplies across the valley and up the mountain with the Jordanians perched on the ramparts atop the Old City walls? How were they to evacuate the wounded? And the problems didn’t end even after the division of the city, for anyone and anything moving below the Old City walls was a potential Jordanian target. One solution was a partially covered trench that ran between the Gobat School and the Yemin Moshe neighborhood on the other side of the valley. Unfortunately the tunnel, which remained in place until the city was reunited in 1967, was too narrow to handle much traffic and included many impractical bends. So engineer Uriel Hefetz came up with the idea for a cable car, and in December of 1948 the army stretched a 200-meter (650-foot) long steel cable across the Hinnom Valley from today’s Mount Zion Hotel on Hebron Road to the Gobat school. Three soldiers were needed on each side to hand wind the cable. The cable car constructed in 1948 over Jerusalem’s Hebron road. (Shmuel Bar-Am)Although the cable car was used for only a short time it was kept ready, like the tunnel, for any emergency. So secret was the cable car that until it was revealed to the public in 1972 few people in the country knew that it had ever existed. The cable is still there, visible from the bridge which spans Hebron Road, the valley and Mount Zion. It is an integral part of the Cable Car Museum located in the Mount Zion Hotel.High-wire artist Philippe Petit is no stranger to cables. In 1971 he became famous when he walked a tightrope between the towers of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, and three years later he was arrested after an unauthorized walk between the Twin Towers that once towered above New York.Twenty years after the reunification of Jerusalem, Mayor Teddy Kollek invited Petit to perform a similar stunt across the Hinnom Valley within the framework of that year’s Israel Festival. Petit was delighted with the idea. For this, his longest high-wire amble so far, he donned a jester’s costume and in a symbolic gesture of peace released a dove from his pocket and daringly crossed a valley that had once divided the city in two.—Aviva Bar-Am is the author of seven English-language guides to Israel. Settler umbrella group adopts motion against Trump plan, but opposition buildsThe Times of Israel-Majority of West Bank leaders express total opposition to a Palestinian state, even if it costs them annexation, but minority publish own statement backing ‘deal of the century’By Jacob Magid-may 21,20-Today, 1:34 pm

In what is effectively a gesture against the Trump peace plan, the Yesha Council umbrella group of settlement mayors has adopted a series of principles that include supporting West Bank annexation while vehemently opposing the establishment of any Palestinian state. The Trump plan, which was released in January, envisions Israel annexing roughly 30 percent of the West Bank and provides a list of conditions for the establishment of a Palestinian state on the remaining land beyond the Green Line. The Yesha Council convened for the vote last week in the Ma’ale Adumim city settlement, but publicized its decision Wednesday.A spokesman for the Yesha Council told The Times of Israel that 15 of the 24 mayors participated in the session and that the measure passed by a large majority. He declined to provide the exact numbers of the vote, saying the body never reveals such results.(From L-R) Gush Etzion Regional Council chairman Shlomo Ne’eman, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Yesha Council chairman David Elhayani at a Gush Etzion lookout point in the West Bank on November 19, 2019. (Haim Zach/GPO)-The resolution passed included six tenets: 1. The Yesha Council welcomes the positive change in the US policy towards [West Bank] settlement. 2. The Yesha Council calls on the new government and the Knesset to act to apply sovereignty in Judea, Samaria and the Jordan Valley as soon as possible. 3. Applying sovereignty is the responsibility of the State of Israel only (i.e., not something that requires American approval). 4. The Yesha Council opposes any recognition or agreement of any kind to the establishment of a Palestinian state. 5. The Yesha Council will not agree to a construction freeze in [settlements] or restrictions on construction in any locality. 6. The Yesha Council does not accept any map which creates isolated enclaves that will hamper their future development.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (R) speaks during a press conference with US President Donald Trump in the East Room of the White House on January 28, 2020, in Washington. (Alex Wong/Getty Images/AFP)In a statement reflecting on the adopted resolution, Yesha Council chairman David Elhayani said, “For years, the Yesha Council has been working to apply sovereignty [in the West Bank], and we’ve gone from a situation in which almost no one talked about the subject or was aware of it, to the unprecedented situation where the prime minister and the US president discuss an agreement that includes sovereignty.“However, we will not agree to the establishment of a Palestinian state in the heart of the Land of Israel.“If the result of the [Trump] agreement is to establish a terror state in Judea and Samaria (West Bank), include the creation of isolated enclaves and a freeze on construction, we are ready to give up sovereignty, despite all the hard work and resources we have invested in the issue in recent years.”The Trump plan allows Israel to continue building within the borders of existing settlements, while barring construction in the areas that are earmarked for a possible Palestinian state.Hours after the Yesha Council published the list of six principles that it approved last week, a group of eight settler leaders published their own statement calling for supporting the Trump plan. The statement organized by Efrat Mayor Oded Revivi, who also serves as Yesha’s foreign envoy, calls the Trump deal a “defining test” for settler leadership akin to the one placed before the pre-state Zionist Congress when it was forced to decide whether or not to accept the UN Partition Plan in Mandatory Palestine.US ambassador to Israel David Friedman (L) with Efrat Mayor Oded Revivi in Efrat on February 20, 2020. (Gershon Elinson/Flash90)“The essential difference is not only in the amount of real estate under discussion for a proposed Jewish homeland, but in the approach of our leadership,” the statement reads.“Today our leaders are hemming and hawing. In the past they took to the streets — not to protest — but to dance as they rejoiced over the recognition and legitimacy offered by the international community for the formation of a Jewish state.”“Now it is our turn. The leaders of the Settlement Movement in Judea and Samaria must be appreciative of the recognition and legitimacy being offered by the most powerful country on earth. We must be grateful and rejoice in The Deal of the Century.”In addition to Revivi, the letter was signed by Ariel Mayor Eli Shaviro, Megilot Regional Council chairman Aryeh Cohen, Oranit Local Council chairman Nir Bartal, Alfei Menashe Local Council chairman Shai Rosenzweig, Elkana Local Council chairman Assaf Mitzner, and Har Adar Local Council chairman Haim Mendel Shaked.

Michigan dam had repeated safety violations before flooding-[Associated Press]-JOHN FLESHER-May 21, 2020

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — A hydroelectric dam that failed to hold back floodwaters this week in Michigan was the target of lengthy investigations by federal regulators, who revoked the facility's license over safety violations two years before the flooding that forced 10,000 people to evacuate their homes.Boyce Hydro Power’s history of violations lasted throughout the 14 years the company was authorized to run the nearly century-old Edenville dam, according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which said it repeatedly raised concerns about the dam's ability to prevent flooding during extreme conditions because of its inadequate spillway capacity. The dam on the Tobacco and Tittabawassee rivers, about 140 miles (225 kilometers) north of Detroit, was among several barriers overtaken Tuesday by floodwaters that chased people from communities in central Michigan. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer warned that Dow Chemical Co.’s hometown of Midland could end up under 9 feet of water. She said the state will investigate the dam operators. The commission ordered Boyce Hydro to form an independent team to investigate three other dams it owns on the rivers that were vulnerable to a “cascading failure scenario.” Among them was the Sanford Dam, which also was damaged. The commission planned to send a staff engineer to the site to assist with the investigation as soon as it could be done safely, Chairman Neil Chatterjee said in a statement. The governor said the state was “reviewing every possible legal recourse."Lee Mueller, architect and co-member manager of the company, did not return calls for comment Wednesday from The Associated Press. The Edenville dam, in Michigan’s Gladwin and Midland counties, includes a series of earthen embankments totaling about 6,600 feet (2,012 meters) long, with a maximum height of nearly 55 feet (16.8 meters). It forms a 2,600-acre reservoir known as Wixom Lake, a popular boating and fishing spot. The dam has two reinforced concrete spillways to carry away excess water when reservoir levels get too high.In its 2018 order revoking Boyce Hydro's license, the commission said its primary concern about the dam was its inability to handle “the probable maximum flood” — the type of event that could be expected from “the most severe combination of critical meteorologic and hydrologic conditions that is reasonably possible” in the area.Commission guidelines require that dams be able to withstand such a flood or have enough spillway capacity to prevent reservoirs from rising dangerously high. The Edenville dam's spillway capacity was only about 50 percent of the probable maximum flood, the commission said.Inadequate spillway capacity is a common problem for U.S. dams, an Associated Press investigation found in 2019.The commission said it warned the dam's previous owners of the need for improvements in early 1999, but no changes were made before the license was transferred to Boyce Hydro in 2004.Boyce Hydro said it planned to build an auxiliary spillway on the Tittabawassee River that year and was studying the need for another on the Tobacco River, the commission said. But the company failed to complete either project, repeatedly seeking extensions and missing deadlines, the agency said. Among its other violations: performing unauthorized dam repairs and earth-moving and failing to file an adequate public safety plan, maintain recreation facilities or monitor water quality. For more than a decade, Boyce Hydro "knowingly and willfully refused to comply with major aspects of its license ... with the result that public safety has been put at risk, and the public has been denied the benefits, particularly project recreation, to which it is entitled," the commission's order said.“The record demonstrates that there is no reason to believe that Boyce Hydro will come into compliance," the commission added. The company “has displayed a history of obfuscation and outright disregard of its obligations.”The company twice lowered Wixom Lake's level without permission after the federal license was revoked, said Nick Assendelft, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, which has overseen the Edenville barrier since its federal license was withdrawn. The department was pursuing enforcement action for the violation and resulting damage to natural resources when the dam gave way, Assendelft said. A lawsuit filed April 30 says the lengthy drawdowns in 2018 and 2019 killed “thousands, if not millions” of freshwater mussels, many listed as endangered species. The Four Lakes Task Force, an authority formed by the two counties and area property owners, agreed to buy all four dams on the rivers from Boyce Hydro last December and was planning to close the deal within the next couple of months, spokeswoman Stacey Trapani said. The group planned to raise $32 million for the purchase and for major upgrades and maintenance, she said. Now, the status of the deal is unclear.“We're still in emergency mode at the moment,” Trapani said. “As soon as we are able, we’ll start assessments so we can determine a path forward.”___Associated Press Writer Mike Casey in Concord, New Hampshire, contributed to this report.
