Half of Canadians say governments are hiding something about COVID-19: poll-[The Canadian Press]-MAY 26, 2020

OTTAWA — Half of Canadians believe they're not getting the whole truth from their governments about COVID-19, a new poll suggests, and some also believe conspiracy theories about where the novel coronavirus began. The most recent survey from Leger and the Association for Canadian Studies found 50 per cent of respondents felt governments were deliberately withholding information about the pandemic of the novel coronavirus, which has killed thousands and ground the economy to a halt."It's staggering, in a period where I believe trust has never been as high," said Leger vice-president Christian Bourque. The poll also asked respondents about their satisfaction with the measures governments were putting in place to fight COVID-19. Sixty-eight per cent said they were satisfied with what their local government is doing, 74 per cent with the federal government's actions and 78 per cent with their provincial government.Bourque found those numbers quite high, considering the results suggest people also seem to believe they are not getting the full picture. The misgivings were greatest in Quebec, where 60 per cent of those polled believe governments are keeping secrets about the virus. The province is also home to nearly 48,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Monday, as well as just over 4,000 deaths — the highest number in Canada. The poll asked questions of 1,510 adult Canadians selected from its online panel between May 22 and May 25. Because of the way participants were recruited, the internet-based poll cannot be assigned a margin of error.Respondents were also asked whether they agree with nine theories circulating online about the coronavirus and how, or why, it came to be."It's basically stuff that's been sort of thrown around the Internet," Bourque said of the theories put forward in the poll. "It's stuff we saw go by and we started to make a list."Few of those polled — 15 per cent or less — believe stories that philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is responsible for the spread of the coronavirus, that there's a link between the pandemic and 5G networks, or that COVID-19 never existed in the first place.More than a third of people, however, believe the virus was created in a lab, or by the Chinese government. Nineteen per cent of respondents also said they believed the number of deaths related to COVID-19 is exaggerated.More than half of respondents agreed with at least one of the nine theories put forward.Openness and transparency have been the "watch words" of the federal government's response to the pandemic from the beginning, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said during his daily briefing Monday."But we recognize there's always more to do in terms of openness and transparency and we will continue to demonstrate that with Canadians because we know fundamentally there is an issue of trust and confidence."He said if Canadians trust that their government is being open and truthful, they'll be more likely to continue to follow public health advice to curb the spread of the virus. This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 26, 2020.Laura Osman, The Canadian Press.

Settler leader launches campaign to thwart ‘poisoned’ Trump peace plan-The Times of Israel-Yossi Dagan slams proposal’s backing for Palestinian state and creation of West Bank settlement enclaves, says Netanyahu should approve annexation even without US backing-By TOI staff and Jacob Magid-28 May 2020, 12:19 am

A hawkish settler leader on Tuesday launched a campaign against the establishment of a Palestinian state and creation of isolated settlement “enclaves” in the West Bank as part of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan.Despite the US proposal seemingly allowing for Israeli annexation of all Israeli settlements and the Jordan Valley, some settler officials have come out against the plan for provisioning space for a Palestinian state on some 70 percent of the West Bank.In a statement, Yossi Dagan, head of the Samaria Regional Council, likened the plan to a “poisoned chalice,” warning against the creation of a “terror state” that would endanger Israel and vowing not to “abandon” residents of the settlements that would be surrounded by a Palestinian state. The US plan provides a list of conditions for establishing a Palestinian state in the rest of the West Bank, which would envelope 15 settlements that would be connected to Israeli territory by access roads only. Of those 15 settlements, six are in the Samaria Regional Council.Dagan said his “aggressive campaign” would demand the government not agree to these aspects of the plan and also include outreach to evangelical Christians who support Trump.“The prime minister can and must apply sovereignty in a manner in which Israeli interests are maintained,” Dagan said. “[Benjamin] Netanyahu is a great leader and he can and must apply sovereignty over Judea and Samaria on the State of Israel’s terms, with or without American agreement.”Samaria Regional Council chairman Yossi Dagan (L) meets with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Blair House on January 27, 2020. (Samaria Regional Council)He added that with the US presidential elections coming up in November, Trump would not look to pick a fight with Israel.Dagan, a member of Netanyahu’s Likud party, claimed Trump’s evangelical supporters didn’t know the plan provides for a Palestinian state and were therefore backing it, even though he said it endangers their dream of “the return of the Jewish people to all parts of the promised land.”The statement from Dagan came as the Yesha Council, an umbrella group of settler leaders, began pushing a map of what they claimed was the Trump administration’s plan to divide the West Bank into Israeli and Palestinian areas. The map shows much of the West Bank bathed in red, ostensibly Palestinian areas, with a crudely drawn network of access roads and settlement enclaves along with panhandles of settlement blocs.Yesha officials were showing the map to right-wing lawmakers, warning the proposed Palestinian state it outlines would be a danger to Israel.— Shimrit Meir (@shimritmeir) May 26, 2020-In an interview with the Kan public broadcaster, Yesha leader David Elhayani said the map would “strangle” the settlement movement.“It’s preferable to forgo applying sovereignty and to leave the existing situation as is,” he said.Earlier this month, Yesha adopted a series of principles in what was effectively a protest against the Trump plan, including opposing a Palestinian state and any limitations on new settlement construction.(From L-R) Gush Etzion Regional Council chairman Shlomo Ne’eman, Jordan Valley Regional Council chairman David Elhayani, Binyamin Regional Council chairman Yisrael Gantz and Efrat Local Council chairman Oded Revivi watch the unveiling of the Trump peace plan from a Washington hotel room on January 28, 2020. (Yesha Council)-The US plan allows Israel to continue building within the borders of existing settlements, while barring construction in the areas that are earmarked for a possible Palestinian state.Hours after the Yesha Council published the list of six principles that it approved, a group of eight settler leaders published their own statement calling for supporting the Trump plan. The statement organized by Efrat Mayor Oded Revivi, who also serves as Yesha’s foreign envoy, calls the Trump deal a “defining test” for settler leadership akin to the one placed before the pre-state Zionist Congress when it was forced to decide whether or not to accept the UN Partition Plan in Mandatory Palestine.“The leaders of the Settlement Movement in Judea and Samaria must be appreciative of the recognition and legitimacy being offered by the most powerful country on earth. We must be grateful and rejoice in The Deal of the Century,” the statement said.

European leaders said to implore Netanyahu not to advance annexation-The Times of Israel-Macron, Johnson, others reportedly warn PM; EU foreign policy head leaves annexation out in first call with Israeli counterpart, apparently signaling ‘willingness to engage’By Raphael Ahren-maqy 28.20-Today, 10:34 pm

Several European leaders reportedly sent personal letters to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in recent days asking him not to push ahead with plans to unilaterally annex parts of the West Bank.“I ask you, in a spirit of friendship, that your new government not take unilateral action [in the West Bank]. Such a move would destabilize the Middle East,” French President Emmanuel Macron told Netanyahu, according to a report aired Tuesday on Channel 13. “Only dialogue with the Palestinians and a just and balanced solution will provide Israel with peace, security and stability.”UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and their Italian counterpart Giuseppe Conte reportedly sent Netanyahu letters expressing similar sentiments.Several European nations are currently considering ways to deter Israel from moving forward with its declared intention to apply sovereignty to the entire Jordan Valley and all settlements across the West Bank — territory much of the international community wants to see become a Palestinian state — and how to punish it if it ignores their warnings and carries out the annexation, according to the report.According to the coalition agreement on which Israel’s new government was founded, Netanyahu can bring the annexation plan to a vote in the government and the Knesset as soon as July 1, as long as it’s done in full coordination with the US. The administration of US President Donald Trump has vowed to recognize Israel’s annexation as long as Jerusalem does it on the basis of the peace plan issued by Washington earlier this year.According to the network, Palestinian leaders are concerned that leading Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Gulf states, have reacted with seeming indifference about the prospect of annexation. While Jordan has threatened to review its ties with Israel over the annexation plans, most other Arab states have made little fuss.Citing an unnamed Palestinian source, Channel 13 said that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, having severed security ties with Israel, may resort to still more dramatic measures if Israel presses ahead with unilateral annexation, including dismantling the PA.Last week, Abbas announced the end of security cooperation with Israel in reaction to the annexation plans, in what was seen as his most extreme move yet to attempt to thwart Israeli intentions to claim sovereignty over areas the Palestinians seek for their future state. On Monday, Netanyahu reportedly told lawmakers from his Likud faction that he was sticking to plans to begin the annexation process on July 1, rebuffing domestic and international pressure against the move.European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell addresses a video press conference at the conclusion of a video conference of EU foreign affairs ministers in Brussels, April 22, 2020. (Olivier Hoslet, Pool Photo via AP)-Among the most outspoken opponents of the annexation plans has been the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, who in recent weeks released several statements condemning the annexation plans, causing much chagrin in Jerusalem.Borrell spoke with Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi Tuesday, but surprisingly did not highlight the bloc’s vociferous opposition to Israel’s plan to annex parts of the West Bank.A readout of the conversation provided by Borrell’s office quoted him reaffirming the EU’s wish to “continue working with the new Israeli government in a constructive and comprehensive way, in the spirit of the longstanding friendship that binds the EU and Israel together.”Ashkenazi and Borrell had “an honest and open exchange of views on a broad range of bilateral and regional issues,” the readout continues, without elaborating. The EU’s foreign policy czar “underlined the EU’s unequivocal commitment to the security of the State of Israel, which is not negotiable for the EU” and reaffirmed the union’s intention to “address jointly issues of mutual interest and concern and to work with Israel to promote global peace and security and to contribute to building trust, in particular in the region and the immediate neighborhood.”The fact that the readout did not explicitly mention annexation is to be seen as an indication of the union’s “willingness to engage” with the new Israeli government, an EU source told The Times of Israel. The source added, however, that the EU’s position on annexation “is abundantly clear.”Last week, the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem slammed Borrell’s “megaphone diplomacy” after he repeatedly warned Israel against annexation.“Israel and the EU share history, values, interests, opportunities and both face threats. It is regrettable that once again, the security of Israel, a key partner of the EU, and the threats that Israel face, were not mentioned at all and were not given the centrality that they should be in such a message,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lior Haiat said at the time.“This ‘megaphone diplomacy’ is not a substitute for intimate diplomatic dialogue and will not advance the role the EU is seeking to fulfill.”Incoming Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, May 18, 2020 (Foreign Ministry)-On May 18, Borrell had issued a brief statement that largely focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the need for a two-state solution, the importance of international and Brussel’s “grave concerns” over Jerusalem’s supposed plan to unilaterally annex the Jordan Valley and all settlements across the West Bank.“The two-state solution, with Jerusalem as the future capital for both States, is the only way to ensure sustainable peace and stability in the region,” Borrell declared. “In this vein, we note with grave concern the provision – to be submitted for approval by the Israeli cabinet – on the annexation of parts of occupied Palestinian territories.“We strongly urge Israel to refrain from any unilateral decision that would lead to the annexation of any occupied Palestinian territory and would be, as such, contrary to International Law,” he said. The statement was issued in Borrell’s name because there was no consensus on it among the EU’s 27 member states. According to several sources familiar with the matter, Hungary, Austria and other countries reasoned that now was not the time for such statements. On the other hand, some member states, including Ireland and Luxembourg, sought to issue a statement that was even harsher, including mentioning steps the EU may consider if Israel were to advance its annexation plans. Given the near-certain veto of such a text by Budapest and Vienna, some countries considered issuing a separate joint statement listing possible sanctions against Israel as a deterrent against annexation, but this has not materialized so far.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Israel said set to reject Chinese bids for role in 5G network infrastructure-The Times of Israel-Israel said set to reject Chinese bids for role in 5G network infrastructure-TV report: Security officials warn Netanyahu that China could abuse project to spy; Pompeo, on recent visit, cautioned against Beijing gaining ‘access to Israeli infrastructure’By TOI staff and Shoshanna Solomon-may 28,20-Today, 10:19 pm

Isael is reportedly set to reject Chinese bids for the deployment of fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks, both because the US has urged it to limit Chinese involvement in its strategic projects and because Israeli security officials are concerned that China could abuse its involvement in the project to spy on Israel. The report came on the same day that Israel named a local company as the winning bidder for a $1.5 billion desalination plant contract, beating out Chinese competition amid reports of pressure from Washington.Israel last July launched a tender for the construction of 5G networks, open to local and overseas players, and the Communications Ministry said at the time that it aimed to select the winning bids by December. In practice, however, the process has taken longer, and security officials have recently been warning Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to select Chinese firms for the project, Channel 12 news reported Tuesday.Even if the lowest-priced offers come from China, it “should not be allowed to win the contract and set up these vital, sensitive networks,” the officials have reportedly told the prime minister in closed-door discussions. Two weeks ago, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made a lightning visit to Israel during which he discussed Chinese investments.US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, left, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his Jerusalem residence, May 13, 2020 (Kobi Gideon/PMO)-In a May 13 interview with public television, Pompeo voiced concern over Beijing gaining “access to Israeli infrastructure” that could “put Israeli citizens at risk,” as well as endangering the “capacity for America to work alongside Israel on important projects.”Caught between the US and China, Israel “has apparently chosen its side” on this and other such strategic projects, Channel 12 said Tuesday, and is generally “distancing China” from them.Regulators in the US were last year reported to be leading an effort to remove components developed by China’s Huawei and other firms from the telecommunications networks of US firms because of national security concerns.Netanel Cohen, the director-general of the Communications Ministry, right, standing, at a briefing in Jerusalem, July 14, 2019 (Shoshanna Solomon/Times of Israel)Countries around the world have been moving to introduce 5G, the next generation of wireless networks, which bring the promise of greatly increased internet speeds — where full-length movies can be downloaded in 3.6 seconds — and better coverage and responsiveness. In April 2019, South Korea claimed to have beaten the US in becoming the first country to roll out a 5G mobile network. Verizon’s 5G service was launched in parts of Chicago and Minneapolis that month.Israel, the so-called Startup Nation, suffers from slower internet speeds. The deployment of 5G networks is one of the ways to help boost speeds, which have been held back in Israel by lack of competition in the internet infrastructure market. In the tender, Israel is auctioning frequencies ranging from 700-2100 MHz, which are also used for 4G services, to 2600-3800 MHz, which is only for 5G services.Companies that win the bid will be able to delay payment for the frequencies until 2022, so they can more easily invest the significant amounts of money needed to deploy the networks. A nationwide 5G network, which would be an added layer on existing 4G networks, has been estimated to cost around NIS 2 billion ($562 million).Illustrative: A youth checks his cellphone (AP Photo/Andre Penner)-In addition, existing players will be able to join forces with other firms and submit joint bids to share costs. They will also be able to get a rebate on annual frequency charges for four years upon meeting certain milestones and can win grants from the ministry of up to NIS 200 million, depending on the speed in which the networks are deployed. The total amount of incentives is some NIS 500 million, the ministry said.“The digital future of Israel is dependent” on upgrading to 5G as soon as possible, said Netanel Cohen, the director-general of the Communications Ministry, at a briefing last July.

Touring Gaza border amid lull, Gantz said to warn tensions will remain for years-Hours after rocket sirens ring out in false alarm, defense minister meets with top IDF officers, local mayors on first work trip since taking up post-By Judah Ari Gross-may 28,20-Today, 8:1

Defense Minister Benny Gantz on Tuesday made his first trip to southern Israel and the Gaza border area since entering his position and reportedly warned that tensions with the Palestinian enclave would remain despite a current lull.Gantz’s office said he met with both military officials and local mayors during the trip.In his meeting with local officials, Gantz warned that “tensions would not disappear, they will be with us for many years,” according to the Walla news site.“We know who our neighbors are. We seek peace. There will be ups and downs, and we are ready for anything. We won’t be chumps if something happens in Gaza,” he said, according to the outlet.Gantz’s office refused to comment on what was said in the meeting. The Gaza frontier has been relatively quiet in recent months as Israel and the Strip’s rulers, the Hamas terror group, have been negotiating a prisoner exchange and ceasefire, which neither side appears interested in threatening with an attack.Defense Minister Benny Gantz, center-left, Minister Michael Biton, center-right, meet with head of the Southern Command Herzi Halevi, right, and Sderot Mayor Alon Davidi, left, in southern Israel on May 26, 2020. (Ariel Hermoni/Defense Ministry)-During the visit, Gantz also met with IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi, head of the Southern Command Herzi Halevi and commander of the Gaza Division Eliezer Toledano, as well as other lower-ranking officers, the Defense Ministry said.“This is the first visit that Gantz has made in his position and he focused on the Palestinian front in Gaza and to the challenges on the southern front in general — on the security and civilian level,” his office said.Gantz, a former IDF chief who oversaw 2014’s war with Gaza, was sworn in as defense minister on May 17. The tour was his first working trip since taking up the post.He was joined on his visit by Minister Michael Biton, who is responsible for all civilian-related matters in the Defense Ministry, a newly created government position.Part of the meeting with local officials, including the mayors of Sderot and the Gaza-adjacent regions, was dedicated to explaining Biton’s position, which was created as part of a coalition agreement between Gantz’s Blue and White party and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party.Defense Minister Benny Gantz, center, meets with IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi, left, and head of the Southern Command Herzi Halevi, right, in southern Israel on May 26, 2020. (Ariel Hermoni/Defense Ministry)In addition to meeting with senior IDF officers and mayors, the defense minister also visited soldiers from the 202nd Battalion of the Paratroopers Brigade who were stationed on the Gaza border.Earlier on Tuesday, a false alarm in several Gaza border towns sent hundreds of people rushing to bomb shelters. The military did not comment on what caused the sirens to sound.Throughout the past three elections, Gantz, sharply criticized the government’s policies regarding the Strip, specifically toward the Hamas terror group, which rules the enclave.Gantz frequently accused Netanyahu and his coalition of having allowed Israel’s deterrence toward the group to be “erased.”

ISAIAH 30:26-27
26 Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold,(7X OR 7-DEGREES HOTTER) as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people,(ISRAEL) and healeth the stroke of their wound.

22 And except those days should be shortened,(DAY LIGHT HOURS SHORTENED) there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake (ISRAELS SAKE) those days shall be shortened (Daylight hours shortened)(THE ASTEROID HITS EARTH HERE)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

REVELATION 16:7-9
7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.
8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.
9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

Excessive heat in US prompts hypothermia warning (yes, you read that right)-[The Weather Network]-Cheryl Santa Maria-May 25, 2020

Temperatures are climbing past 40°C in parts of California, Nevada, and Arizona prompting authorities to issue a warning about ... hypothermia? That's the case in an excessive heat warning that's currently in effect. The extreme heat is causing a rapid melt of snow that had fallen on some northern Nevada ranges, including in northeast Humboldt County, the Jarbidge Wilderness, and the Ruby and East Humboldt Ranges, among others. All of that snow is flowing into Central California rivers and streams, and the water is moving swiftly. While there's currently no risk for flooding, officials are warning residents to avoid taking a dip in the icy water."Brief exposure to the cold water of a river or stream may lead to hypothermia," the National Weather Service says in a statement."Rivers and streams are dangerous places to seek cooling relief from the heat."While it may sound strange, this type of scenario is possible in Canada, according to Weather Network meteorologist Jessie Uppal. If the conditions are right, something similar could happen in "tourist-heavy areas in western Canada and even in parts of Quebec where we see runoff from winter snow at the alpine levels," Uppal says."These are areas where people will go swimming or boating anyway, so the risk is there."California's extreme heat is expected to dissipate throughout the week, returning to more seasonal levels by the weekend.

Atlantic: Sweltering conditions push temperatures to the 30C mark-[The Weather Network]-Digital Writers-MAY 26, 2020

Talk about weather whiplash -- days after seeing record low daytime highs, parts of Atlantic Canada are seeing soaring temperatures, reaching 30ºC by mid-week for some parts of the Maritimes, and feeling even hotter with the humidity. In Newfoundland, even St. John's is within reach of its first 20ºC day of 2020 this week. A closer look, and a glimpse at the weekend, below.WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS:Heat and humidity will surge by mid-week-Chance of rain, thunderstorms this weekend-TUESDAY: TEMPERATURES, HUMIDITY CLIMB-The sweltering conditions that are building on the East Coast won't be evenly spread Tuesday. While Nova Scotia's western tip is looking at daytime highs in the teens, along with most of Newfoundland, New Brunswick will see that surge of warmth continue. Some parts of the north are even set to reach the 30°C mark, or come very near to it. Prince Edward Island and the rest of Nova Scotia will see daytime highs in the low 20s.With the humidity, even places seeing moderate daytime highs will seem hotter than the thermometer says. In New Brunswick, Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the heat covering most of the province.LOOK AHEAD: HUMIDITY RISES, UNSETTLED WEEKEND-Very warm and humid conditions are expected on Wednesday and Thursday for most of the region with temperatures reaching the upper 20s and lower 30s across much of New Brunswick, but cooler near the Bay of Fundy. St. John’s, N.L., may reach 20°C for the first time this year on Friday. The end of the week will bring some relief, however, thanks to an area of low pressure that will track from northern Quebec to Labrador late Friday through Saturday, dragging a cold front across Atlantic Canada for this weekend. It will also bring a period of rain and thunderstorms, enhanced by a couple of systems tracking along the front. Cooler weather is expected across the region next week.Stay tuned to The Weather Network as we continue to monitor the forecast.
