The Israeli military deployed Iron Dome missile defense batteries throughout the country on Tuesday, following a rocket attack from Gaza the previous night and ahead of what is expected to be a sensitive next few weeks.Earlier in the day, the Israel Defense Forces accused the Iran-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad of firing the rocket late Monday night, which landed several kilometers off the coast.The military expects the coming weeks to be particularly tense, as they will see the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the international Eurovision song competition in Tel Aviv, Israel’s Memorial and Independence Days, and the first anniversary of the opening of the contentious US Embassy in Jerusalem.Following Monday’s rocket launch, Israel scaled back the permitted Gaza fishing zone from 15 nautical miles to six until further notice. Israeli security forces arrested 18 far-right activists for violently protesting the demolition of an illegal outpost in the central West Bank on Tuesday morning, a Border Police spokesman said.The troops arrived at Maoz Esther, adjacent to the Koshav Hashachar settlement, in order to demolish all five makeshift buildings that had been built there on private Palestinian land, said a spokeswoman for the Civil Administration, the Defense Ministry body that authorizes West Bank construction.A Border Police spokesman said that the majority of arrests were for assaulting officers and added that a number of the activists — primarily youths — hurled food at the troops as they pulled demonstrators away from the scene in order to bulldoze the buildings.The Honenu legal aid organization representing the arrested activists, most of whom were not residents of the outpost, said the border cops used excessive force in detaining them.The arrested minors and adults were slated to be brought later Tuesday before the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court. A Honenu attorney said he expected they would be released.Maoz Esther is a small outpost established for the first time in 2005 in memory of the Esther Galia, who was killed in a shooting attack three years before. Over the past decade and a half, the wildcat community has endured countless razings due to its placement on private Palestinian land. As many areas in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick continue to fight with historic levels of flooding, an “active” weather system is still on the horizon for many of these flood zones.“The first real storm that we’re going to see starts tonight and then into tomorrow across southern Ontario, perhaps into far southern Quebec as well,” Steve Travis, meteorologist with AccuWeather tells Yahoo Canada.This storm also has the potential to bring some mixed snow and rain to this area, particularly around the Ottawa region, but that shouldn’t stretch farther north than Montreal.Travis anticipates 10 to 30 mm of rain in the Toronto area into the evening on Wednesday, with accumulation amounts possibly reaching 50 mm in some areas between Toronto and Montreal. People around the Montreal area should expect a lighter but steady rainfall on Wednesday.In terms of temperatures, southern Ontario is expected to see some drastic differences. AccuWeather is projecting a high of 9 C for the Toronto region, while areas south of the city will be in the mid-teens. The weather forecaster predicts a high of 19 C on Wednesday around the city of London.Moving to Friday and into the weekend, another round of rain will come in with some milder air.“It does look like, although we’re going to see a few rain opportunities, we will warm up towards the end of the week,” Travis said.Farther east, it looks like the bulk of these storms don’t get quite as far as Nova Scotia and New Brunswick but Travis expects the storms could bring some rain to those areas as well.-Still snow potential in the PrairiesThis active weather system on Wednesday will stay south and east of the Prairies, but there is a storm on the horizon for Thursday into Friday for this region.“It looks like that could bring some rain to at least southern Alberta, southern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba,” Travis said. “It’s not out of the question that there’s even a little bit of snow mixed in on Thursday or Friday, and that could reach Edmonton and Calgary.”Temperatures on Wednesday across much of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are expected to stay fairly uniform, around 10 C. Milder air is anticipated to make an appearance on Thursday with a few areas increasing to 15 C. But according to Travis, the colder air comes back around for the weekend.“Beyond Friday and into Saturday, it actually might get quite cold there,” Travis said. “It doesn’t look like any real heavy rainfall there, I’d say at least through the weekend, I think any rain that falls will be quite light.”

Severe spring flooding that has forced thousands of residents from their homes in Canada's eastern half refuses to let up in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick.Environment Canada has issued heavy rainfall warnings and special weather statements — with a mess of rain, sleet, snow and ice pellets possible across a wide section of the flood zones starting Tuesday night and continuing Wednesday.Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan said at a news conference in Ottawa Tuesday that there are now 2,600 Canadian Forces personnel deployed across the three provinces, with more on standby. He said about 1,000 of those are in Quebec.Another 1,500 have been authorized to be sent to Ontario to help with historic flooding along the Ottawa River and in central Ontario cottage country towns like Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes.Annual flooding in the Kashechewan First Nation in northern Ontario remains a concern. Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said the vast majority of the 1,600 evacuations in Ontario are from that region, with the remainder mostly from the Ottawa area.While many in these areas have been deploying sandbags to help cope with the flooding, researchers and consultants say they aren't necessarily the best solution.They say the sacks can be effective in flash floods or other situations where they won't be in contact with water for too long, but sandbags lose their effectiveness as soon as they become saturated with water, meaning they have limited impact during prolonged floods.Here are the latest developments in each affected region.-Ottawa-The Ottawa River should start to peak in some areas west of Ottawa-Gatineau on Tuesday, according to the Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board, which measures its water levels.Some communities along the Ottawa River are already seeing waters higher than they saw in the 2017 flood.An estimated one million sandbags are standing between the Ottawa River and residences and businesses in Ottawa, and more are in place across the river in Gatineau, Que.But they may not be up to the task of holding back the water, which is expected to rise another 50 centimetres and not peak until later Tuesday or Wednesday. "I believe personally that if these were non-native, non-First Nations people, action would have happened a lot sooner. I sincerely believe that."Central Ontario cottage country-The mayor of Bracebridge said he's hoping tomorrow's weather forecast doesn't play out as expected. Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for the swath of central Ontario that's been struggling to cope with flooding in recent days.Mayor Graydon Smith said 25 to 30 mm could fall on Bracebridge tomorrow, with the possibility of a little more rain on Thursday. Smith says an additional 60 military personnel are coming to the region today to help with flood conditions, making a total of 160 soldiers in the area.Four municipalities have declared states of emergency in central Ontario, while further east the Ontario government has activated disaster recovery assistance for the county of Renfrew and the city of Pembroke.
