Hamas developing Bitcoin system for secure international funding, report says-Terror group in ‘experimental stage’ of building complex online payment system, raising fears among regulators-By TOI staff-APR 28,19

Hamas has launched an experimental program that uses a complex cryptocurrency system to raise money from international donors. The terror group’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, called for digital currency donations in January, asking donors to send payments to a single digital address. In recent weeks, the group adjusted its approach, with its website generating a new digital address for each transaction, according to a Reuters report released Friday. The constantly changing online address is difficult for regulators to track and control, according to the analysis firm Elliptic. From March 26 to April 16, donors sent Hamas around $3,300 via the new Bitcoin mechanism. It is a relatively small amount compared to the funding the terror group receives from Iran and other sources, but the new development could be a sign of things to come, analysts said.Hamas is still in an “experimental stage” when it comes to cryptocurrency, Elliptic cofounder Tom Robinson told Reuters.A two-minute video on the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades website gives donors detailed instructions on how to send the group Bitcoin payments. The animated video, in Arabic with English subtitles, advises viewers to use a public device to set up a secure Bitcoin “wallet” that cannot be linked to their own IP address.Hamas, an Islamist terror group, seeks to destroy Israel.

Some women of color frustrated by Biden’s presidential bid-Many black female voters are hoping for minority nominee and irked by former VP’s handling of 1991 Anita Hill case, activists say-By JUANA SUMMERS and ERRIN HAINES WHACK-TOI-APR 28,19

HOUSTON, Texas (AP) — Former Vice President Joe Biden’s decision to enter the Democratic presidential race is causing consternation among some Democrats, particularly women of color, who have been hoping for a nominee who better reflects the nation’s diversity. At the She the People forum, billed as the first presidential forum focused on women of color, Roxy D. Hall Williamson’s shoulders slumped at the mention of Biden, who made his campaign announcement on Thursday.“I know that we have been cultured to feel that only the white man can save us,” the LaMarque, Texas, organizer said Wednesday. “I just don’t feel like Biden is our answer.”Biden’s candidacy is likely to reshape the Democratic race, which has put the party’s diversity on display. The group of eight 2020 hopefuls who spoke at the forum was comprised of one black man, one black woman, three other women, a Latino man and two white men, all making the case for why they should be the nominee.Black female voters will play a critical role in the Democratic Party’s attempt to defeat President Donald Trump in 2020. An inability to earn their support in past cycles has spelled political peril for Democratic candidates. For his part, Biden has maintained strong ties to the African American community over the decades. The raucous, standing-room crowd in the 1,800-person capacity auditorium at the historically black Texas Southern University listened intently as the candidates were questioned about maternal mortality, immigration, tribal sovereignty, income inequality and other issues. Attending were Sen. Cory Booker, former Obama Cabinet member Julian Castro, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Sen. Kamala Harris, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren.LaTosha Brown, the co-founder of Black Voters Matter, said she was initially eager for Biden to enter the race but now sees “strong alternatives” to him.“I’m over white men running the country,” Brown said. “I don’t know if him getting in changes the field. He has name recognition, but his strength is also his weakness. Who is his announcing going to surprise?”She added: “To ignite the kind of base that needs to be ignited to beat Trump, I’m not sure he moves them.”In interviews, black women repeatedly pointed to a singular issue plaguing Biden’s candidacy: his handling of the 1991 Supreme Court confirmation hearing of Clarence Thomas and the Senate Judiciary Committee’s treatment of Anita Hill, a black professor who faced a panel of white male lawmakers about her sexual harassment allegations against Thomas. Biden, then a US senator from Delaware, was the committee’s chairman.Williamson said that she was “still salty” about the role Biden played in the hearing and that “it wasn’t OK then and it’s not OK now.”Adoneca Fortier, 55, said that she hoped that Biden would more fully address his role in the hearings, perhaps by extending a personal apology to Hill.“If there is an apology, I think it would be genuine because I think he realizes what’s happening now,” Fortier said, adding that she hoped Biden would choose a woman of color as his running mate.On Thursday, Biden’s deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield said the former vice president had spoken to Hill recently and expressed his regret to her for what she endured and his admiration for what she has done to change the culture around sexual harassment. But Hill told The New York Times that her conversation with Biden earlier this month left her feeling deeply unsatisfied and unconvinced that he has accepted the harm for what he’s done.“I cannot be satisfied by simply saying I’m sorry for what happened to you. I will be satisfied when I know there is real change and real accountability and real purpose,” Hill said.Cherisse Scott, 44, of Memphis, said the issue is “bigger than Anita Hill.”“Though we supported President Obama, I think we still wanted to see more happening on behalf of black and brown communities, specifically black communities,” Scott said. “I think Joe Biden’s great. I think Joe Biden was a hell of a vice president. But I wouldn’t vote for him for president.”Cynthia Dismuke, 53, of Houston, is undecided on a candidate in 2020 but finds Biden’s openness to a female running mate attractive. Nevertheless, she was one of many women at the event who came away impressed with Warren, saying, “She’s not making promises. She has a plan.”“I don’t necessarily want another white male ticket,” Dismuke said. “I want to see who’s going to get Trump out of office.”Leah Daughtry, CEO of the 2016 Democratic National Convention, said Wednesday’s forum was a testament to the strength of black women at the polls.“We show up and we make the difference in any election,” said Daughtry, the forum’s honorary co-chair. “We aren’t interested in the flash. We want to know: What are you going to do? What are your policies that are going to impact our lives?”

Attorneys in Weinstein case buy some extra time before trial-In a win for disgraced Hollywood producer, judge decides to close courtroom to public and media; court case now set to begin in September-By Michael R. Sisak and ALICIA RANCILIO-TOI-APR 28,19

NEW YORK (AP) — Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assault trial, postponed until September, is now poised to end two years after a wave of women’s allegations against him sparked the #MeToo movement.A Manhattan judge announced the delay Friday after a closed-door hearing in which prosecutors sought to broaden their case to include some of those women’s accounts.Weinstein’s trial had been scheduled to begin June 3, but both sides indicated they need more time to sort through witness and evidence issues. It is now set for September 9, with jury selection expected to take up to two weeks and testimony lasting about a month.Weinstein lawyer Jose Baez, who joined the case in January, saw the delay as a boon to a defense keen on discrediting his accusers and showing that any encounters were consensual.“We had a very good day in court today. We’re glad that the trial got back to September,” Baez told reporters. “This is going to give us an ample opportunity to dig into the case.”The three-month delay was Weinstein’s second win of the day, after Judge James Burke decided to close the courtroom and spare him from having the media and the public hear about the prosecution’s plans to bring various accusers into court.Weinstein is charged with assaulting two women in New York City, but prosecutors want jurors to hear from many of the dozens of other women whose allegations against Weinstein haven’t led to criminal charges.Weinstein, 67, has denied all allegations of wrongdoing. He pleaded not guilty and is free on $1 million bail.Burke said closing the courtroom for the hearing was “the only means available to avoid the tainting of the jury pool” because the proceeding dealt with material that “is prejudicial to the defendant and is highly inflammatory.”News coverage, he said, would serve no purpose other than to stir negative public sentiment toward Weinstein-Lawyers for news organizations, including The Associated Press, argued that the prosecution and defense arguments didn’t meet the high legal standard for banning the media and the public.Weinstein’s case is “a matter of immense and legitimate public interest,” and the allegations against him are already widely known, said Robert Balin, a lawyer for the news organizations.Prosecutors said it was necessary to close the courtroom, both to protect Weinstein’s right to a fair trial and to shield the identities of accusers whose names and allegations were expected to come up during the hearing.Weinstein lawyer Marianne Bertuna argued that news coverage could influence potential jurors and that “the court cannot be complicit with the press in denying the defendant’s right to a fair trial.”Balin said that the allegations against Weinstein from more than 80 women have already been widely reported and that many of them, such as actresses Mira Sorvino and Ashley Judd, have agreed to be identified publicly. But not all have, Illuzzi-Orbon said.An appellate judge denied a request by the media outlets to immediately halt the proceeding but granted an expedited appeal and ordered parties to file briefs by Wednesday. The news organizations want access to a transcript of the hearing and to related documents that were filed under seal.Weinstein himself was mum as he came and went from court. Asked how he was doing, he just nodded. He is charged with raping a female acquaintance in his Manhattan hotel room in 2013 and performing a forcible sex act on a different woman in 2006.In seeking to have other accusers testify, the prosecutors in Weinstein’s case appear to be echoing the strategy Philadelphia-area prosecutors used a year ago in convicting Bill Cosby at his sexual assault retrial. Hearings pertaining to such witnesses in the comedian’s case, though, were open to the media and the public.Perhaps expecting an onslaught of accusers taking the stand, Baez sent a letter this week to the lawyer for one of them, asking for emails he says show the woman acknowledged she had a consensual relationship with Weinstein. The AP does not identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they come forward publicly.

Trump tells NRA he’s withdrawing from UN arms trade treaty-Accord regulates international conventional weapons sales, from small arms to battle tanks, combat aircraft and warships; critics say move will embolden terrorists-By Jill Colvin and LISA MARIE PANE-TOI-28 April 2019

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — With pro-gun legislation largely stalled in Congress, US President Donald Trump said Friday he is withdrawing the US from an international agreement on the arms trade, telling the National Rifle Association the treaty is “badly misguided.”Trump made the announcement as he vowed to fight for gun rights and implored members of the nation’s largest pro-gun group — struggling to maintain its influence — to rally behind his re-election bid.“It’s under assault,” he said of the constitutional right to bear arms. “But not while we’re here.”Trump said he would be revoking the United States’ status as a signatory of the UN Arms Trade Treaty, which regulates international trade in conventional weapons, from small arms to battle tanks, combat aircraft and warships. President Barack Obama signed the pact in 2013 but it has never been ratified by US lawmakers. It has long been opposed by the NRA.“Under my administration, we will never surrender American sovereignty to anyone,” Trump said, before signing a document on stage asking the Senate to halt the ratification process. “We will never allow foreign diplomats to trample on your Second Amendment freedom.”“I hope you’re happy,” he told the group, to cheers. His move against the treaty came as Trump sought to excite an organization that was pivotal to Trump’s victory in 2016 but, three years later, is limping toward the next election divided and diminished.“You better get out there and vote,” he said, telling the crowd of thousands that the 2020 election “seems like it’s a long ways away. It’s not.”Gun activists denounced the treaty when it was under negotiation as an infringement of civilian firearm ownership, despite the well-enshrined legal principle that says no treaty can override the Constitution or US laws. The treaty is aimed at cracking down on illicit trading in small arms, thereby curbing violence in some of the most troubled corners of the world.Advocates of tighter gun restrictions denounced Trump’s decision. Kris Brown, president of the Brady organization, said it was a “reckless move” that will “only embolden terrorists and other dangerous actors around the world.”In a speech full of grievance, Trump railed against the Russia investigation, which did not establish a criminal conspiracy between Russians and the Trump campaign. Special counsel Robert Mueller outlined potential episodes of obstruction of justice by the president without concluding that he had committed any crime, leaving such questions for Congress to pursue as it saw fit.“They tried for a coup,” Trump said. “It didn’t work out so well.”“And I didn’t need a gun for that, did I?” he quipped, adding: “Spying. Surveillance. Trying for an overthrow? And we caught ’em.”And in a pre-emptive attack against his 2020 Democratic challengers, Trump claimed without evidence that the other party wants “to take away your guns.”An emboldened NRA had high hopes and ambitious plans for easing state and national gun regulations after pouring tens of millions of dollars into the 2016 presidential race, seeing its dark horse candidate win and Republicans in control of both branches of Congress. But much of the legislation the group championed has stalled, due, in part, to a series of mass shootings, including the massacre at a Parkland, Florida, high school that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence that has had a powerful impact. And Democrats won control of the House in the midterms. At the same time, the group is grappling with infighting, bleeding money and facing a series of investigations into its operating practices, including allegations that covert Russian agents seeking to influence the 2016 election courted its officials and funneled money through the group. As Trump landed in Indianapolis, a judge imposed an 18-month prison term on gun rights activist Maria Butina, an admitted Russian agent who tried to infiltrate American conservative groups. The NRA’s shaky fortunes have raised questions about the one-time kingmaker’s clout heading into 2020.“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measures. With Trump in office, gun owners no longer fear the Second Amendment is under attack to the extent it was perceived to be under Democrats.“Good times are never good for interest groups because it’s much better when Armageddon is at your doorstep,” said Harry Wilson, a Roanoke College professor who has written extensively on gun politics. “Fear is a huge motivator in politics.”The NRA, said Adam Winkler, a UCLA law professor and expert on gun policy, has also dramatically changed its messaging over the last two years, with its NRATV service advocating a panoply of far-right political views that have turned off some members. At the same time, public sentiment has shifted. A March AP-NORC poll found that 67% of Americans overall think gun laws should be made stricter — up from 61% in October 2017.And a June 2018 Gallup poll found overall favorable opinions of the NRA down slightly from October 2015, from 58% to 53%. Unfavorable views have grown, from 35% to 42%.Against that backdrop, Democratic politicians have become more comfortable assailing — and even actively running against — the NRA and pledging action to curb gun violence. And gun control groups like Everytown, which is largely financed by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and a political action committee formed by Gabby Giffords, the former Arizona congresswoman wounded in a shooting, have become better organized and more visible, especially at the state level. That reversal was made clear during the 2018 midterm elections, when those groups vastly outspent the NRA.During the midterms the NRA “committed almost a disappearing act,” said Everytown’s Feinblatt.Winkler, the UCLA law professor, allowed that the group had scored some victories under Trump, including the appointment of two Supreme Court justices who may be open to striking down gun laws. But overall, he said, “On the legislative front, the NRA has been frustrated,” with priorities like national reciprocity for conceal carry laws and a repeal of the ban on silencers stalled.Instead, Trump introduced a new federal regulation: a ban on bump stocks after a man using the device opened fire on a crowd of concertgoers on the Las Vegas strip, killing 58 people and wounding hundreds.

Corbyn refuses invitation to state dinner for ‘racist and misogynist’ Trump-But UK Labour Party leader says he would welcome a meeting with US president during the June 3-5 visit-By AFP-TOI-28 April 2019

LONDON — Britain’s main opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn on Friday declined an invitation to a banquet with Donald Trump when the US president visits in June, accusing him of using “racist and misogynist rhetoric.”Prime Minister “Theresa May should not be rolling out the red carpet for a state visit,” Corbyn, a veteran left-winger and pacifist, said in a statement.Trump “rips up vital international treaties, backs climate change denial and uses racist and misogynist rhetoric,” Corbyn said, although he added that he would welcome a meeting with Trump during the June 3-5 visit.Corbyn said it was “disappointing that the prime minister has again opted to kowtow to this US administration.”House of Commons speaker John Bercow, who has ruled out allowing Trump to address parliament, and Vince Cable, leader of the opposition Liberal Democrats, have already declined the invitation to the dinner.State dinners for visiting heads of state are usually held at Buckingham Palace and are lavish affairs.May invited Trump for a state visit when she visited him in January 2017 — just days after he took office. The invitation proved controversial and an online petition to cancel it reached 1.9 million signatures. The president, a strong supporter of Brexit, traveled to Britain last year but only on a working visit without the pomp and ceremony associated with state visits.

Children among 15 dead as Sri Lanka forces raid jihadist hideout-Three cornered suicide bombers set off explosives in safe house during firefight with security forces near the eastern town of Kalmunai-By Amal JAYASINGHE and Ammu Kannampilly-TOI-APR 28,19

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AFP) — Fifteen people including six children have died during a Sri Lankan security forces operation in the aftermath of the Easter terrorist attacks, as three cornered suicide bombers blew themselves up and others were shot dead, police said Saturday. The three men set off explosives, also killing three women and six children inside what was believed to a jihadist safe house near the eastern town of Kalmunai on Friday night.“Three other men, also believed to be suicide bombers, were found dead outside the house,” police said in a statement, adding that they had been shot.Police backed by troops exchanged fire with those inside the house for over an hour, a military official said, adding that the bodies were recovered early Saturday following a search operation.Security forces have stepped up their searches for extremists after the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the suicide attacks on three churches and three luxury hotels, which killed least 253 people and wounded hundreds more. The joint operation between the police and the army was carried out following a tip-off that those responsible were holed up in a built-up area of Kalmunai, 370 kilometers (230 miles) east of the capital. There were no casualties among the security forces, the police said. The government has admitted major intelligence lapses, although Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said he was unaware of any warnings ahead of the attacks, in a sign of the rift between him and President Maithripala Sirisena.“If we had any inkling, and we had not taken action, I would have handed in my resignation immediately,” he told the BBC.“But what do you do when you are out of the loop?”Sirisena tried to sack Wickremesinghe last year, and experts believe the feud could have played a part in Sri Lanka’s failure to act on intelligence warnings given weeks before the attacks.-Studio raided-Friday’s clashes came hours after the security forces raided a nearby location where they believe Islamist radicals recorded a video pledge to Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi before carrying out the Easter bombings.Police said they found an IS flag and uniforms similar to those worn by the eight fighters for the video before they launched the attacks. IS released the video two days after the attacks. The head of a local extremist group, Zahran Hashim, who appeared in the video, was killed at one of the Colombo hotels targeted, the Shangri-La. He was accompanied by a second bomber identified as Ilham Ibrahim.Authorities had been desperately searching for Hashim after naming his group, National Thowfeek Jamaath (NTJ), as the perpetrators of the attack, but announced Friday he had been killed in the hotel bombing.DNA tests are being done on a severed head to conclusively establish that it is Hashim’s, officials said.-Radicals hunted-The government is on the defensive over its failure to heed a foreign intelligence warning that NTJ was planning suicide bombings on churches.Police chief Pujith Jayasundara became the second top official to resign over the blunders Friday, after top defense ministry official Hemasiri Fernando also stepped down.Sri Lanka’s Catholic leader, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, the archbishop of Colombo, has said he felt “betrayed” by the government’s failure to act on the warnings.Wickremesinghe apologized on Friday.“We take collective responsibility and apologize to our fellow citizens for our failure to protect victims of these tragic events,” the PM wrote on Twitter. The military have poured troops onto the streets to back up police as they search for suspects using newly granted powers under a state of emergency. At least 94 people are in custody, including a man believed to be the father of two of the bombers.“We now have info that there are about 140 people in Sri Lanka linked to the Islamic State. We can and we will eradicate all of them very soon,” Sirisena said Friday, announcing new legislation to ban extremist groups.-Tourism hit-Dozens of foreigners died in the attacks and the government has said it expects the number of overseas tourists to fall by 30 percent this year, at a cost of $1.5 billion in revenues.Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera said the island — which depends on tourism as a cornerstone of its economy — could take up to two years to fully recover. The US State Department on Friday escalated its travel warning for Sri Lanka and ordered the departure of all school-age family members of US government employees.Terrorists “may attack with little or no warning,” it said in a statement that advised citizens to reconsider traveling to the island.Several nations including Israel, Australia and Britain have already warned their citizens against visiting Sri Lanka in the wake of the attacks.

Sunday Mass canceled across Sri Lanka a week after bombings-Military engages in gunbattle with suspects believed linked to attacks; police announce a 24-hour curfew in country’s Muslim-dominated area-By Emily Schmall, Jon Gambrell and BHARATHA MALLAWARCHI-TOI-28 April 2019

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Catholic leaders canceled Sunday Masses indefinitely across Sri Lanka and officials urged Muslims to stay home for Friday prayers in an extraordinary call by the clergy to curtail worship as fear of more attacks plagued the island nation after the deadly suicide bombings on Easter.Shops were closed, streets were empty and heavy security patrols continued across the country despite police saying the alleged mastermind of the attacks that killed over 250 people had died in one of the suicide blasts. Those Sri Lankans who did venture out spoke about the fear encompassing daily life at a level unseen since a long civil war ended a decade ago. Many are angry that the government, paralyzed by internal disputes, hadn’t acted on intelligence obtained weeks before Easter that warned of the attacks. On Friday night, Sri Lanka’s military said its soldiers in the eastern part of the country engaged in a gunbattle with suspects believed to be linked to the attacks, and police announced a 24-hour curfew until further notice in the Muslim-dominated area where the shooting took place.Continuing government confusion in its investigation — from drastically lowering the death toll to misidentifying a Brown University student as a militant — only added to the public’s worries.“Everyone is nervous,” said Abdullah Mohammed, a 48-year-old Muslim in Colombo. “Not just the Muslims. Buddhists, Christians, Hindus — everybody’s nervous.”Officials from the police to the prime minister say militants remain on the loose and have access to explosives. That has led to increased security at shrines, churches, temples and mosques across the multiethnic country of 21 million off the southern coast of India.Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith told journalists that church officials had seen a leaked security document describing Roman Catholic churches and other denominations as a major target. Ranjith, who is the archbishop of Colombo, asked the faithful across Sri Lanka to stay home for their own safety.“We don’t want repetitions,” Ranjith said.It was an extraordinary request for a Catholic clergyman to make, as churches often remain a refuge. It came on the day that priests allowed journalists inside one of the bombed churches, St. Anthony’s Shrine in Colombo, where broken glass littered a blood-stained floor. The US Embassy in Sri Lanka also warned the public to stay away from places of worship over the weekend, a stark alert underlining that authorities believe that attackers remain at large.Authorities told Muslims to worship at home rather than attend communal Friday prayers that are the most important religious service of the week, but several mosques held services anyway. At a mosque in Colombo, police armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles stood guard outside for hundreds of worshippers as the imam inside and others wept while praying to Allah to help their country. The Easter attackers are “not Muslims. This is not Islam. This is an animal,” said Akurana Muhandramlage Jamaldeen Mohamed Jayfer, the chairman of the mosque. “We don’t have a word (strong enough) to curse them.”Sri Lanka’s government, crippled from a long political crisis between the president and prime minister last year, promised swift action to capture militants still at large. President Maithripala Sirisena said about 140 people had been identified as having links to the Islamic State group.A “major search operation has been undertaken,” Sirisena said. “Every household in the country will be checked.”On Friday night, soldiers raiding a house in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province fought a gunbattle with suspected militants linked to the bombings, said military spokesman Brig. Sumith Atapattu. After a couple of hours, he said soldiers were “engaged in a clearing operation,” adding that some casualties were possible. In the same area, police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said officers acting on information from intelligence officials found 150 sticks of blasting gelatin and 100,000 small metal balls, as well as a van and clothing suspected to be used by those involved in the Easter attack. Suicide bomb vests often are packed with such balls to increase the shrapnel in the explosion, making them even deadlier.Earlier Friday, police confirmed the militant group’s leader, Mohamed Zahran, died in the suicide bombing at the Shangri-La Hotel, one of six hotels and churches attacked. Zahran appeared in an Islamic State video claiming responsibility for the coordinated assault, and authorities in both Sri Lanka and Australia confirmed links between IS and the attack.Police said investigators had determined that the assailants’ military training was provided by someone they called “Army Mohideen,” and that weapons training had taken place overseas and at locations in Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province.Police said they arrested the operator of a copper factory who had helped Mohideen make improvised explosive devices and purchase empty cartridges sold by the Sri Lankan military as scrap copper. On Thursday night, Sri Lanka’s health ministry drastically reduced its estimated death toll from the bombings. A statement said “approximately” 253 people had been killed, nearly one-third lower than an earlier police estimate of 359 dead. The discrepancy was not immediately explained, but it fit a pattern of confused reports by Sri Lankan officials that have muddled the investigation. On Friday, police apologized to a Brown University student and a human rights activist after they posted her picture to Twitter and erroneously identified her as a wanted militant. The police then deleted their Twitter account.

Palestinians say 31 wounded as Gazans riot along border-8,000 protest, with some throwing rocks and fire bombs at IDF soldiers who respond with tear gas and occasional live fire-By TOI staff-28 April 2019
Some 8,000 Palestinians were protesting along the Gaza Strip border on Friday, with some rioting and throwing rocks and fire bombs at Israel Defense Forces soldiers who responded with tear gas and occasional live fire.According to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry 31 people were wounded. The IDF had no immediate comment. The protests were held at various locations along the border under the banner of Hamas’s ongoing “March of Return” demonstrations that have been held almost every Friday for more than a year. The exchange also came amid ongoing efforts to implement a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.Egypt, the United Nations and Qatar recently brokered ceasefire understandings between Israel and Hamas, which Hebrew media reports have said include an end to violence emanating from the Gaza in exchange for the Jewish state easing some of its restrictions on the movement of people and goods into and out of the coastal enclave.Since last March, Palestinians have been holding weekly “March of Return” protests on the border, which Israel has accused Gaza’s Hamas rulers of using to carry out attacks on troops and attempt to breach the security fence. Hamas, an Islamist terror group, seeks to destroy Israel.

UNIFIL reportedly instructed to expand patrols in south Lebanon-Lebanese paper claims UN peacekeepers have been told to widen operations to better monitor Hezbollah’s weapons and activities near the Israeli border-By TOI staff-28 April 2019

United Nations forces in southern Lebanon have been instructed to boost and expand their patrols recently to new areas in a bid to better monitor Hezbollah weaponry, Lebanese newspaper al-Akhbar reported Friday. The report by the newspaper, which has ties to the Iran-backed terror group, had no outside confirmation.Al-Akhbar claimed the recent weeks have seen UNIFIL peacekeepers receive instructions “to add new routes to their patrols and to enter areas they had not previously entered south of the Litani [river] under the pretext of full implementation of the Resolution 1701,” which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.According to that resolution, Hezbollah was to disarm entirely in the area between the Litani and the Israeli border. Israel has repeatedly accused the terror group of failing to do so, and of stockpiling numerous short- and medium-range rockets in southern Lebanon. An unidentified source with security knowledge quoted by the paper said UNIFIL had been told to patrol certain new areas to look into possible Hezbollah weapons presence. The source added that when the US military attaché in Lebanon visited UNIFIL headquarters last May, he warned of potential budget cuts by Washington if peacekeepers do not take a stronger stance to limit Hezbollah activities. The paper claimed the new measures threaten the 13 years of stability in the region. On Thursday UNIFIL confirmed that a tunnel discovered earlier this year by Israel had crossed the Lebanese-Israeli border, in the third such breach of a ceasefire resolution.“UNIFIL has informed the Lebanese authorities about the violation and has requested urgent follow-up actions,” the UN force said in a statement. In December, Israel accused Hezbollah of digging cross-border tunnels into its territory from southern Lebanon and launched an operation to destroy them. According to the IDF, Hezbollah had planned to use the tunnels to kidnap or kill civilians or soldiers, and to seize a slice of Israeli territory in the event of any hostilities. The IDF did not give a total figure for the tunnels found, though it announced in January that six were destroyed during the course of the operation. Five have been confirmed to exist by UNIFIL.“Of these, three tunnels have been found to be crossing the Blue Line,” the peacekeeping force said on Thursday.Israel has accused Iran of seeking to establish a military presence in Syria that could threaten Israeli security, and of attempting to transfer advanced weaponry to Hezbollah in Lebanon. This once quiet fight has become increasingly public in recent months, with each side issuing public threats and warnings.Last week, the commander of the IDF’s Ground Forces said Hezbollah was still planning to carry out a surprise invasion of northern Israel despite the recent anti-tunnel operation.Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Monday claimed Israel’s ground forces were unprepared for a military offensive in Lebanon.AFP contributed to this report.

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.

Winter tries a comeback in U.S. Midwest with up to a foot of snow-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Barbara Goldberg-April 28, 2019

(Reuters) - The phenomenon known as thundersnow announced the arrival of a storm expected to dump more than a half-foot of snow on the U.S. Midwest on Saturday, more than a month into spring.Midwesterners retrieved their winter wear from storage to trudge through a possible 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) of snow predicted by evening in the Chicago area and more than a foot (30 cm) in some isolated areas of Minnesota, Iowa, southern portions of Wisconsin and northern Illinois, forecasters said."It will be heavy at times," said Meteorologist Andrew Orrison of the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland."It is pretty impressive for the end of April across the Midwest to be getting these kind of totals," he said, attributing the storm to a late-season surge of cold air from Canada.More than 200 flights in and out of Chicago's O'Hare International Airport were canceled or delayed by late morning as the wet weather began rolling across the nation's midsection. The heaviest impact in Chicago was expected in the late afternoon into evening."It will start out as rain, then gradually mix with snow, and change over to a heavy wet snow in the late afternoon, especially this evening, across the Chicago metropolitan area," Orrison said.By late morning, thundersnow - a thunderstorm that delivers snow rather than rain - and accumulating snow were reported across southeastern South Dakota, southwest Minnesota and northwest Iowa, he said."Even some of the bigger cities – including Chicago – may actually see a fairly substantial amount of accumulating snow by the time it ends later tonight," Orrison said.Once the storm system dissipates, temperatures were expected to rebound, at least into the 50s Fahrenheit (10 to 16 C).After the storm, Midwesterners can look forward to some good news - and some bad news."The snow that accumulates will melt fairly rapidly. By Monday we'll be near 60 degrees," Orrison said.Melting snow in already-flooded parts of the Midwest, however, may not be welcomed by farmers who for months have been facing devastation from ruined crops and drowned livestock."That will tend to slow the retreat of floodwaters ongoing across the Midwest," Orrison said.(Reporting by Barbara Goldberg in New York; Editing by Matthew Lewis)

U.S. NTSB to investigate Illinois chemical spill that sent 37 to hospitals-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-April 28, 2019

(Reuters) - The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate a chemical spill in a small Illinois village north of Chicago on Thursday that sent 37 people to hospitals and forced nearby residents to shut their windows and shelter in place, authorities said. Those sent to hospitals with "inhalation issues," none of which were life-threatening, included three law enforcement officers who were overcome after responding to a spill of anhydrous ammonia in Beach Park, Illinois, the Lake County Sheriff's Office said. Eleven firefighters were also hospitalized. The NTSB is sending team of four to investigate the hazardous materials release. The team will begin on-scene work on Friday morning, the NTSB said. The chemical leaked out of containers being pulled by a tractor in the municipality about 45 miles (72 km) north of Chicago, the sheriff's office said in a statement."This caused toxic plumes of the chemical to be released into the air," it said.Because of the incident, which occurred at 4:25 a.m. local time, the sheriff's office urged all residents within a one-mile (1.6-km) radius to stay in their homes."Law enforcement and fire personnel are currently going door-to-door to check on residents to ensure they are safe in their homes and not in medical distress," it said.(Reporting by Peter Szekely in New York and David Shepardson in Washington; editing by Jonathan Oatis and Bill Berkrot)
