Trump: Congress ‘can’t impeach’ me-Defiantly insisting that he did nothing wrong, president says he is not worried at all about prospect of Congress pursuing action against him-By Sebastian Smith-TOI-25 April 2019

WASHINGTON (AFP) — US President Donald Trump said Monday that Congress “can’t impeach” him over the findings of the Mueller report into Russian election meddling and his alleged attempts to hamper the investigation.Defiantly insisting that he did nothing wrong, Trump also denied a portrait of dysfunction in the White House where disobedient aides are said to have saved him from committing obstruction of justice by refusing to carry out his instructions.Asked by reporters at a White House Easter egg event for children whether the prospect of impeachment worries him, Trump replied: “Not even a little bit.”“Only high crimes and misdemeanors can lead to impeachment. There were no crimes by me (No Collusion, No Obstruction), so you can’t impeach,” Trump stated earlier on Twitter.“It was the Democrats that committed the crimes, not your Republican president! Tables are finally turning on the Witch Hunt!” he said.It confirmed that Russian operatives had attempted to interfere in the 2016 election to help Trump beat Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, including by hacking into email accounts. The report also found that Trump’s campaign took advantage of the impact on Clinton, but did not deliberately reach out to collude with the Russians. How do you impeach a Republican President for a crime that was committed by the Democrats? MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 21, 2019-During the probe, Trump repeatedly tried to hamper Mueller’s work, the report said. But Mueller did not rule one way or the other on whether Trump had committed the crime of obstruction of justice.Democrats, who control the lower house of Congress, are so far mostly holding off from calling for impeachment proceedings. However, powerful House committees plan to dig further into the scandal and are pushing to be given the whole Mueller report, without parts currently blacked out for security or legal reasons.House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that Democratic leaders would hold a conference call on Monday to discuss strategy.“While our views range from proceeding to investigate the findings of the Mueller report or proceeding directly to impeachment, we all firmly agree that we should proceed down a path of finding the truth,” she said in a statement.-‘Nobody disobeys’ Trump? Trump is spinning the Mueller report as a complete exoneration. He has gone as far as saying repeatedly that the probe was a political hit job amounting to “treason” and “spying.”Democrats, however, say that the report has demonstrated in detail that Trump is unfit for office, even if the evidence would be insufficient to prove crimes in court.Whatever the truth, Mueller’s report has inflicted damage on the former real estate tycoon and reality TV showman’s reputation through stories of close aides maneuvering to stop the president from going too far in his attempts to slow down the probe.“The President’s efforts to influence the investigation were mostly unsuccessful, but that is largely because the persons who surrounded the President declined to carry out orders or accede to his requests,” Mueller wrote in his report. This narrative clearly annoys Trump, who has built a career on his image as a ruthless boss, famous during his television performances on “The Apprentice” for telling contestants: “You’re fired!”Even though the aides allegedly disobeyed him so that they could prevent more serious damage, Trump denied Monday that any sort of insubordination would be possible.“Nobody disobeys my orders,” he said at the Easter egg event. In addition to the ongoing fight over what to do about the Mueller report, Trump faces danger from congressional probes into his business interests and tax history, which, in a break with tradition, he has refused to make public.Isn’t it amazing that the people who were closest to me, by far, and knew the Campaign better than anyone, were never even called to testify before Mueller. The reason is that the 18 Angry Democrats knew they would all say ‘NO COLLUSION’ and only very good things!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 22, 2019-On Monday, Trump and his businesses filed a Washington federal court lawsuit to try and block a subpoena issued by the House Oversight and Reform Committee to gain access to their financial records.“The Democratic Party, with its newfound control of the US House of Representatives, has declared all-out political war against President Donald J. Trump,” the filing said.

Bernie Sanders: Israel now run by Netanyahu’s ‘racist government’-Democratic presidential hopeful insists he is ‘100 percent pro-Israel’ at town hall event; says if elected he would be more sympathetic to Palestinian concerns-By Eric Cortellessa-TOI-APR 25,19

WASHINGTON — Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders excoriated the Netanyahu government as “racist” Monday night as he participated in a CNN town hall event with Democratic voters.Without discussing specific details, the 2020 presidential hopeful called for a change in America’s policy toward Israel, describing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approach toward the Palestinians as “oppressive,” and said that his administration, should he be elected, would be more sympathetic to Palestinian concerns.“What I believe is not radical,” Sanders said. “I just believe that the United States should deal with the Middle East on a level playing field basis. In other words, the goal must be to try to bring people together and not just support one country, which is now run by a right-wing — dare I say — racist government.”Sanders has been a fierce critic of Netanyahu. In the run-up to Israel’s election earlier this month, he castigated the Israeli premier for supporting a deal to allow the extremist Otzma Yehudit party to join his coalition and for his promises to annex West Bank settlements. He told NBC News: “I’m not a great fan of his, and, frankly, I hope he loses his election.”The self-declared democratic socialist has also in the past criticized Netanyahu’s 2015 election-eve warning that Arabs were “voting in droves.”Asked on Monday night how he would navigate the US-Israel relationship given his history of sharp criticism against Netanyahu, Sanders said that his views on the prime minister did not reflect his feelings toward the Jewish state.“I spent a number of months in Israel. I worked on a kibbutz for a while. I have family in Israel. I am not anti-Israel,” Sanders said. “But the fact of the matter is that Netanyahu is a right-wing politician who I think is treating the Palestinian people extremely unfairly.”That line was met with loud applause by the audience of mostly college students at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire. The event was a rare five-hour town hall with back-to-back hourlong segments with five different Democratic presidential candidates: Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, California Senator Kamala Harris, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sanders. The 77-year-old lawmaker insisted that he was “pro-Israel” but that as president he would take a vastly different approach to the intractable conflict than the current administration.US President Donald Trump is known for his close relationship with Netanyahu, and for giving Israel several diplomatic gifts: moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, cutting aid to the Palestinians, recognizing the Golan Heights as sovereign Israel. Since the US announced the embassy relocation and the aid cuts, Palestinian Authority officials have written off the administration and have refused to engage with Washington.“I am 100 percent pro-Israel,” Sanders said. “Israel has every right to exist, and to exist in peace and security and not be subjected to terrorist attacks. But the United States needs to deal with not just Israel, but with the Palestinian people as well.”

PA: 300 Gazan Christians permitted to enter Jerusalem for Easter as of Tuesday-Israeli security official confirms entry approved to capital and the West Bank; human rights group criticizes ‘small, arbitrary’ permit quota-By Adam Rasgon-TOI-APR 25,19

After failing to issue permits to Palestinian Christians in the Gaza Strip to celebrate Easter in Jerusalem on Sunday, Israeli authorities have decided to allow some 300 of them to travel to Jerusalem and the West Bank to mark Orthodox Easter, a high-ranking Palestinian Authority official said on Monday. The permits will allow the Christian Gazans to cross the border starting on Tuesday.Although many Christian sects marked Easter on Sunday, Orthodox Christian communities observe the holiday on April 28. Many Christians in Gaza belong to the Greek Orthodox community and will mark the holiday on the latter date.“The Defense Ministry originally did not issue permits, which unfortunately meant Christians from Gaza who wanted to celebrate Easter in Jerusalem on Sunday were not able to do so,” Saleh al-Ziq, a senior Gaza-based official in the PA Civil Affairs Commission, told The Times of Israel in a phone call.“But following our intervention, it has now issued 300 permits for those wishing to visit Jerusalem and the West Bank and celebrate Orthodox Easter early next week,” Ziq said.An Israeli security official who requested anonymity confirmed that the permits would be issued. The official said Israeli authorities will allow Gaza Christians with permits to exit the coastal enclave through the Erez crossing, the sole pedestrian passageway across the border.Ziq also said that Israel agreed to allow Gaza Christians below the age of 16, who were not issued permits to enter Jerusalem and the West Bank, to do so if a parent or grandparent could accompany them.Last week, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, the Defense Ministry body responsible for liaising with the Palestinians, announced that it would issue 200 permits for Gaza Christians over the age of 55 to travel through the Israeli-controlled Allenby border crossing between the West Bank and Jordan for Easter, but made no mention about whether it would allow Christians in the strip to visit East Jerusalem and the West Bank.Ziq said he was on his way to give the permits to a Father Mario, a Roman Catholic Church leader in Gaza, who he said would distribute them to Palestinian Christians in the territory. He also noted the permits allow for Palestinian Christians in Gaza to enter Jerusalem and the West Bank between Tuesday and May 5.According to a February 2018 report issued by the Palestinian Authority Central Bureau of Statistics, 1,138 Palestinian Christians live in Gaza. Almost all of them live in Gaza City and many of them have family members in the West Bank.Ziq, however, said that while Israel granted some 300 Palestinian Christians in Gaza permits to enter Jerusalem and the West Bank, it refused to issue them to hundreds of other Palestinian Christians in the coastal enclave.“While we received about 300 permits, we applied for a little over 1,000,” he said, adding that 175 of the permits Israel approved were for persons above the age of 55.Israel maintains heavy restrictions on the movement of people and goods into and out of the Gaza Strip. Israeli officials maintain that the limitations on movement prevent terror groups from transferring weapons into the coastal enclave.Elias al-Jelda, a Christian activist in Gaza, said he thought Israel should have issued more than 300 permits for Palestinian Christians in the Strip.“The number of permits they issued is insufficient, but it is better than none at all,” Jelda said in a phone call. “At least some of us will be able to enjoy and celebrate the holiday there.”Mariam Marmur, a spokeswoman for Gisha, an Israeli human rights group that deals with Palestinian freedom of movement issues, echoed Jelda’s comments, lashing out at Israel’s decision to grant 300 permits.“Israel has an obligation to respect the rights of Gaza residents, including to freedom of movement and religion,” she said in a text message. “There is no justification for the small, arbitrary quota of 300 permits, or for the last minute announcement.”

Netanyahu lauds US decision to end waivers on Iran oil sanctions-PM praises Trump for ‘increasing pressure’ on Tehran after Washington warns 5 countries they’ll face financial penalties if they continue trade with Islamic Republic-By Agencies and TOI staff-25 April 2019

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded the Trump administration’s Monday announcement that it will no longer grant exemptions from sanctions to Iran’s oil customers, as the US said it intended to squeeze the Islamic Republic’s top export.“The decision of President Trump and the American administration is of great importance for increasing the pressure on the Iranian terror regime,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement. “We stand by the determination of the United States against Iranian aggression and this is the right way to stop it.”US President Donald Trump’s administration said Monday it would not renew waivers to five countries that continue to import oil from Iran. The waivers are set to expire next month.Trump made the decision as part of the administration’s “maximum pressure” campaign on Iran that aims to eliminate all of its revenue from oil exports, which the US says funds destabilizing activity throughout the Middle East and beyond.“This decision is intended to bring Iran’s oil exports to zero, denying the regime its principal source of revenue,” the White House said in a statement.Acting Foreign Minister Israel Katz said the move would help force Iran to end its nuclear program and support for terror.“Only tough steps of this kind will force the ayatollah regime in Iran to completely stop the development of its dangerous nuclear program and its support for Hezbollah and the other terror groups in the region. Israel will continue to be a loyal partner of the United States in the struggle against Iranian aggression,” he said.Netanyahu was a main voice against the 2015 nuclear deal that opened up Iran’s export market, and has praised Trump’s moves to reverse the pact. The decision affects five nations — China, India, Japan, South Korea and Turkey — that had continued to buy oil from Iran.China, one of Iran’s largest customers, slammed the step, calling it more evidence of US “unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction.” China, which relies on imports for about half of its oil, could present the toughest diplomatic challenge for the US in trying to enforce its sanctions. The administration granted eight oil sanctions waivers when it re-imposed sanctions on Iran after Trump pulled the US out of the 2015 nuclear deal. They were granted in part to give those countries — Japan, South Korea, Turkey, China, India, Greece, Italy, Taiwan — more time to find alternate energy sources but also to prevent a shock to global oil markets from the sudden removal of Iranian crude.US officials said they did not expect any significant reduction in the supply of oil given production increases by other countries, including the US itself and Saudi Arabia.Trump tweeted that Saudi Arabia and other members of OPEC would make up the difference.Saudi Arabia and others in OPEC will more than make up the Oil Flow difference in our now Full Sanctions on Iranian Oil. Iran is being given VERY BAD advice by @JohnKerry and people who helped him lead the U.S. into the very bad Iran Nuclear Deal. Big violation of Logan Act?— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 22, 2019-Since November, three of the eight countries — Italy, Greece and Taiwan — have stopped importing oil from Iran. The other five, however, have not, and have lobbied for their waivers to be extended.

Ukraine enters uncharted waters after comedian wins presidency-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Andrew Osborn and Matthias Williams-April 25, 2019

KIEV (Reuters) - Ukraine entered uncharted political waters on Monday after near final results showed a comedian with no political experience and few detailed policies had dramatically upended the status quo and won the country's presidential election by a landslide.Volodymyr Zelenskiy's win was a bitter blow for incumbent Petro Poroshenko and presents a riddle for investors, the West and Russia who wonder what approach he will take on everything from relations with Moscow to the domestic banking sector.Zelenskiy, 41, will take leadership of a country on the frontline of the West's standoff with Russia following Moscow's annexation of Crimea and its support for a pro-Russian insurgency in eastern Ukraine. In Sunday's second-round vote, Poroshenko, 53, had tried to rally voters, casting himself as a bulwark against Russian aggression and a champion of Ukrainian identity. But Zelenskiy, best known for playing a fictitious president in a TV show, trounced him, winning 73 percent of the vote, central election commission data showed after over 99 percent of votes were counted.Oleksiy Kondrashov, a public sector utilities worker in Kiev, said the result was not an endorsement of Zelenskiy but a protest vote against Poroshenko whose pledges, such as promising to stamp out corruption, came to nothing."Everyone was not voting for Zelenskiy, but against Poroshenko. If someone else had made it to the second round, people would have voted for them instead," said Kondrashov. In a victory speech on Sunday night, Zelenskiy promised he would not let people down."I'm not yet officially the president, but as a citizen of Ukraine, I can say to all countries in the post-Soviet Union look at us. Anything is possible!" He is expected to take office next month.'COMPLETE UNCERTAINTY'Zelenskiy, the latest anti-establishment figure to unseat an incumbent, both in Europe and further afield, has promised to end the war in the eastern Donbass region and to root out corruption amid widespread dismay over rising prices and sliding living standards. But he has not said exactly how he plans to achieve all that.Investors want reassurances that he will accelerate reforms needed to attract foreign investment and keep the country in a multi-billion dollar International Monetary Fund program."Since there is complete uncertainty about the economic policy of the person who will become president, we simply don't know what is going to happen and that worries the financial community," said Serhiy Fursa, an investment banker at Dragon Capital in Kiev.Parliament calls many of the shots in Ukraine and Zelenskiy could struggle to get lawmakers' approval for new policies since his own party has no seats and a faction loyal to Poroshenko is the biggest force.Zelenskiy has the right to propose certain cabinet jobs, like that of foreign minister, but much of the current government is likely to remain in place until the next parliamentary election, which is due in October. The United States, the European Union and Russia will be closely watching Zelenskiy's foreign policy pronouncements to see if and how he might try to end the war against pro-Russian separatists that has killed some 13,000 people.U.S. President Donald Trump phoned Zelenskiy and pledged to support Ukraine’s territorial integrity. German Chancellor Angela Merkel echoed that support for Ukraine's territorial integrity, saying in a letter she looked forward to hosting Zelenskiy for talks in Berlin soon. The European Union delivered formal congratulations to Zelenskiy but made clear it expects him to pursue reforms.RUSSIAN RELATIONS-Zelenskiy said on Sunday he planned to continue European-backed talks with Russia on a so-far largely unimplemented peace deal and would try to free Ukrainians imprisoned in Russia, including 24 sailors. The Kremlin said it was premature to talk of President Vladimir Putin congratulating Zelinskiy or about the possibility of the two leaders working together."We'll be able to judge by concrete deeds," Dmitry Peskov, Putin's spokesman, told reporters.Peskov said Moscow respected the choice of the Ukrainian people, but said there was a question mark over the legitimacy of the election because Kiev did not allow some 3 million Ukrainians living and working in Russia to vote.Zelenskiy has pledged to keep Ukraine on a pro-Western course while sounding less emphatic than Poroshenko about possible plans for the country of 42 million people to one day join the European Union and NATO.Critics accuse the president-elect of having an excessively close relationship with powerful oligarch Ihor Kolomoisky, whose TV channel broadcasts his comedy shows.Zelenskiy has promised not to be unduly influenced by Kolomoisky. But the fate of PrivatBank, Ukraine's largest lender which was nationalized in 2016, is set to be one of the earliest and most important tests of that pledge. The government wrested PrivatBank from Kolomoisky as part of a clean-up of the banking system backed by the IMF. However, a Kiev court ruled last week that the change of ownership was illegal.Zelenskiy has repeatedly denied he would seek to hand PrivatBank back to Kolomoisky if elected, or help the businessman win compensation for the ownership change. The IMF will also be watching closely to see if Zelenskiy will allow gas prices to rise to market levels. That is a politically sensitive issue and one Zelenskiy has been vague about.(Election graphic - https://tmsnrt.rs/2EEQ22R)(Additional Reporting by Pavel Polityuk, Natalia Zinets, Andrei Makhovsky, Polina Ivanova and Margaryta Chornokondratenko in Kiev, Steve Holland in Washington, Alastair Macdonald and Foo Yun Chee in Brussels, Joseph Nasr in Berlin and Anastasia Teterevleva in Moscow; Writing by Andrew Osborn; Editing by Michael Perry, Kirsten Donovan and Frances Kerry)

Hezbollah chief says Israel’s ground forces unprepared for war-Hassan Nasrallah says Jewish state will not be able to clinch victory with air power alone; mocks failure to thwart Gaza rocket fire at Tel Aviv-By TOI staff-25 April 2019

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Monday claimed Israel’s ground forces were unprepared for a military offensive in Lebanon and the Jewish state could no longer win battles solely from the air.In a speech, he estimated that Israel would not seek to initiate a conflict with the neighboring country, as its home front is not prepared to withstand missiles fired by Hezbollah at its major cities.“I lean in the direction that Israel is unlikely to carry out a war on Lebanon,” mused Nasrallah, whose Iran-backed terror group last fought with Israel in 2006. “This is my personal opinion.”“The Israelis say the home front is not ready. Any theoretical Israeli war needs a ground operation to achieve its desired goal. The era in which the air force decides the battle is over. This has become one of the military axioms in the world. If Israel starts a war, it needs a ground operation to achieve its goal for the war,” he continued. To underline his view, the Hezbollah chief mocked the Israeli response to two rounds of rocket fire at Tel Aviv and the area in mid-March, which were not intercepted by the missile defense system Iron Dome.“We saw how two missiles were fired by mistake from Gaza and landed in the Tel Aviv surroundings, and then another missile was shot off from Gaza and landed north of Tel Aviv; all the Israeli measures were not able to do anything,” he said.During his speech, Nasrallah rebuffed as false a report that he had met with senior commanders and warned that the likelihood of war with Israel over the summer was high. According to the Kuwaiti report, he said Hezbollah could suffer severe casualties and he himself might be killed.Nasrallah also condemned the United States for ending sanction waivers for countries that purchase oil from Iran on Monday, calling it a reminder that the US “is the real enemy, the first enemy, and the biggest enemy.”“Israel, the takfiri organizations, terrorists, murderers, and those who launch wars are nothing more than tools of the American project, aggression and tyranny,” he said.Nasrallah’s speech came days after the new commander of the IDF’s Ground Forces said Hezbollah was still planning to carry out a surprise invasion of northern Israel, despite the recent Israeli operation to uncover and destroy an extensive network of cross-border attack tunnels dug by the militia.Maj. Gen. Yoel Strick was tapped to lead the military’s Ground Forces in February, amid increased criticism charging that Israeli troops were not prepared for war. His comments came less than four months months after the IDF concluded its anti-tunnel operation along the Lebanese border.“Hezbollah still has plans to invade the Galilee,” he told the Ynet news site, in an interview on Thursday, referring to entering Israeli territory through a cross-border tunnel network. “Of course, we won’t allow that to happen. We will thwart these plans.”In December, Israel accused Hezbollah of digging cross-border tunnels into its territory from southern Lebanon and launched an operation to destroy them.According to the army, Hezbollah had planned to use the tunnels to kidnap or kill civilians or soldiers, and to seize a slice of Israeli territory in the event of any hostilities. The IDF did not give a total figure for the tunnels found, though it announced in January that six were destroyed during the course of the operation.Strick also voiced support for declaring war on Lebanon as a whole in Israel’s next fight against Hezbollah.“In the next war, it would be a mistake for us to distinguish between the state of Lebanon and Hezbollah, since Hezbollah is a political actor and part of the government,” Strick said.In such a conflict, “if it were up to me, I would recommend declaring war on Lebanon and Hezbollah,” he said. “I have no doubt what the outcome will be… It will be a decisive victory.”In March, recently retired IDF chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot said that Israel came close to all-out conflict with Hezbollah during his tenure.Israel last fought a war with Hezbollah in 2006, but tensions along the northern border have remained high. Israel has carried out airstrikes in Syria for years, to prevent weapons transfers to the Iran-backed terror group.“The Hezbollah threat is a serious threat,” Eisenkot told the conference. “It is a strong organization that has gained experience in running large operations and wants to prepare an attack plan to conquer the Galilee and bring 5,000 fighters underground” into Israel. The threat of war with Hezbollah had increased during the last three years, he said.

Iran threatens to close Strait of Hormuz after US ends sanction waivers-US says blocking access to key oil route would be unacceptable; Turkey blasts Washington decision as one that’ll harm Iranian people-By TOI staff-25 April 2019

A top Iranian naval commander  threatened on Monday to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz, in response to the US decision to end sanction waivers on Iranian oil imports, as Tehran fumed over the “illegal” move.“If we are banned from using it, we will close it,” Gen. Ali Reza Tangsiri, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s navy, was quoted as saying by the semi-official Tasnim news agency. The Trump administration said Monday that it would no longer exempt any countries from US sanctions if they continue to buy Iranian oil, stepping up pressure on Iran in a move that primarily affects the five remaining major importers: China, India, and US treaty allies: Japan, South Korea, and Turkey.US President Donald Trump made the decision as part of the administration’s “maximum pressure” campaign on Iran that aims to eliminate all of its revenue from oil exports that the US says funds destabilizing activity throughout the Middle East and beyond.Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi dismissed the US announcement Monday, arguing that American sanctions and their waivers were “worthless.Given the fact that the sanctions are in principle illegal, the Islamic Republic of Iran basically considers the granted waivers for sanctions as worthless,” the official state Mehr news agency quoted him as having said.An unnamed source in Iran’s oil ministry told the semi-official Tasnim news agency that “whether the waivers continue or not, Iran’s oil exports will not be zero under any circumstances unless Iranian authorities decide to stop oil exports … and this is not relevant now.”“We have years of experience in neutralizing efforts by enemies to strike blows against our country,” the source said, adding that Iran was prepared for the US decision.Iran has in the past threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz in reaction to US sanctions and other activity, raising tensions.A US official said any move to close the key strait would be unacceptable, according to Reuters. The strait is located at the mouth of the Persian Gulf and is crucial to global energy supplies, with about a third of all oil traded at sea passing through it.“In case of any threat, we will have not even an iota of doubt to protect and defend the Iranian waters,” said Tangsiri, of the IRGC navy.Iran regularly holds maneuvers in the strait, which at its narrowest point is 33 kilometers (21 miles) wide, in the waters between Iran and Oman.Despite being so narrow and within the territorial waters of those two nations, the strait is viewed as an international transit route. American forces routinely travel through the area, despite sometimes tense encounters with Iranian forces.Tensions have been high since US President Donald Trump’s May withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which saw sanctions lifted for Tehran limiting its uranium enrichment.Washington reimposed strict economic sanctions on Iran, while the other parties to the nuclear deal — Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany are all trying to maintain the pact. The sanctions have impacted Iran’s economy, contributing to rising inflation and fall in the rial, the Iranian currency.Other countries also reacted angrily to Washington’s decision to end the waiver program.Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu blasted the Trump administration’s announcement in a tweet, saying the move would “not serve regional peace and stability, yet will harm Iranian people.”The US decision to end sanctions waivers on #Iran oil imports will not serve regional peace and stability, yet will harm Iranian people. #Turkey rejects unilateral sanctions and impositions on how to conduct relations with neighbors. @StateDept @SecPompeo— (@MevlutCavusoglu) April 22, 2019-China, one of Iran’s largest customers, also slammed the step, calling it more evidence of US “unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction.” China, which relies on imports for about half of its oil, could present the toughest diplomatic challenge for the US in trying to enforce its sanctions.Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, chief of the Hezbollah group supported by Iran, denounced the US decision in a speech Monday.“We are facing arrogance and aggression by a state that is hurting 80 million people in Iran. The great satan is imposing sanctions against Iran, Syria, Russia and China. This administration is behaving like in a jungle, while the United States itself is supporting terrorism.”Defending the move, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said “The goal remains simply: To deprive the outlaw regime of the funds that it has used to destabilize the Middle East for decades and incentivize Iran to behave like a normal country.”Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the administration for further tightening sanctions enforcement on Iran, which the Jewish state regards as an existential threat. He said the move “is of great importance for increasing pressure on the Iranian terrorist regime.”

Trump calls Sri Lanka PM to express condolences over attacks-At least 4 Americans killed in bombings; Washington sends FBI agents to assist local police in investigation-By AFP-TOI-APR 25,19

WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump called Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Monday to express condolences over the killing of nearly 300 people in suicide bomb blasts at churches and hotels. The attacks on Easter Sunday, which Sri Lankan authorities believe were carried out by a local Islamist group, were “one of the deadliest terrorist events since the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States,” White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said.At least four Americans were killed in the attacks, including a fifth grader around 10 years old who attended the private Sidwell Friends school in Washington.“Prime Minister Wickremesinghe expressed appreciation for the president’s concern and updated him on the progress of the investigation,” according to the White House.Trump told the premier that he “pledged United States support to Sri Lanka in bringing the perpetrators to justice, and the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the fight against global terrorism.”Washington has pledged investigative assistance and is sending FBI agents to help support Sri Lankan police in the probe, The Washington Post reported. It said the FBI has also offered laboratory expertise for testing bomb evidence, while analysts are reviewing bureau databases for any useful information. In a brief statement on Twitter, Trump said he had also spoken with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Sunday. He later deleted this statement and the White House could not be immediately reached for comment on why the president did so.A State Department official said that at least four Americans were killed in the bombings.

Egypt polls close after 3-day vote to extend el-Sissi’s rule until 2030-Constitutional amendment seen as another step toward authoritarian rule eight years after pro-democracy uprising, is nearly guaranteed to pass-By Samy Magdy-TOI-APR 25,19

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) — Polling centers in Egypt closed Monday after a third and final day of voting on constitutional amendments that would allow President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi to remain in office until 2030 and broaden the military’s role. The results are expected within a week. The referendum is virtually guaranteed to be approved, as the government pushed for high turnout to grant it legitimacy.Authorities have waged a wide-scale crackdown on dissent since el-Sissi led the military overthrow of an elected but divisive Islamist president in 2013. The referendum is widely seen as another step toward restoring authoritarian rule eight years after a pro-democracy uprising.Opposition parties have called on voters to reject the measure, but they have little influence in parliament, which is packed with el-Sissi supporters and overwhelmingly approved the changes.Trucks with loudspeakers drove around central Cairo Monday morning, playing patriotic songs and urging people to vote. Some voters were offered free rides or food parcels to increase turnout in the referendum. The National Council for Human Rights, a state-appointed body, reported Sunday that people were giving food to voters, and said cars with signs advertising political parties could be seen transporting people to voting centers.

US offers $10 million for information to disrupt Hezbollah finances-State and Treasury Departments seek names of donors and financiers, bank records, customs receipts or evidence of real estate transactions-By Agencies-TOI-25 April 2019

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration is offering rewards of up to $10 million each for information that disrupts the finances of Lebanon’s terrorist Hezbollah organization. The State and Treasury Departments said Monday the money will be paid to people who provide information such as the names of Hezbollah donors and financiers, bank records, customs receipts or evidence of real estate transactions. The payments will be made by the State Department’s “Rewards for Justice” program that usually offers cash for information leading to the whereabouts of wanted terrorists. This is the first time the program has been used to target a financial network.Since it began in 1984, Rewards for Justice has paid more than $150 million to more than 100 people who have provided information about terrorists or prevented terrorism attacks. The reward was posted as the United States announced on Monday that it will no longer grant sanctions exemptions to Iran’s oil customers, potentially punishing allies such as India as it tries to squeeze Tehran’s top export.US officials say that they are aiming at choking off Iranian revenue so as to reduce the clerical regime’s regional clout, notably its support for terror groups such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah. The Iran-backed group, considered a terror organization by the US, has an arsenal of tens of thousands of rockets and missiles. Its battle-hardened cadres fought Israel to a stalemate in 2006, and have fought alongside President Bashar Assad’s army since the early days of the Syrian civil war, securing a string of hard-won victories. Over the past year, the terror group has translated this power into major political gains unseen in the past.Hezbollah and its allies today control a majority of seats in the Lebanese parliament and the Cabinet, after it managed in 2016 to help Michel Aoun, an allied Christian leader, be elected president. The group has three Cabinet seats, the largest number it has ever taken, including the Health Ministry, which has one of the largest budgets. That has angered Washington, where US officials have called on the national unity government to ensure Hezbollah does not tap into public resources.

Iraq, Saudi Arabia ready to up oil output as US cuts off Iran waivers-As Baghdad prepares to compensate for shortfalls once waivers terminated, Trump says Saudi Arabia and other OPEC members will ‘more than make up’ resulting difference in oil supply-By AFP-TOI-25 April 2019

Iraq and Saudi Arabia were preparing on Monday to reap the benefits of the Trump administrations decision to end sanction waivers on Iran’s oil customers. The US last year reimposed tough sanctions against Iran’s energy sector, but granted select countries six-month waivers to continue importing oil products from Tehran. Those exemptions will end in early May, the White House announced on Monday. An Iraqi government official said Baghdad was ready to boost oil exports by 250,000 barrels a day, to compensate for any shortfalls, once US sanctions waivers for Iranian oil end.Saudi Arabia’s Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih said Riyadh was committed to “stabilizing” the oil market. The kingdom reaffirms its longstanding policy, which seeks to stabilize the markets at all times,” he said in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.“The kingdom will coordinate with other oil producing countries to ensure adequate supplies to consumers,” he added. The Saudi energy minister said Riyadh was “following closely” market developments.Riyadh will work with both producer and consumer countries to ensure “market stability, in the interest of both parties and the growth of the world economy,” Falih said. The White House has said Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates — close US allies — would work to make up the difference in oil, to ensure that global markets are not rocked.US President Donald Trump said that Saudi Arabia and other members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) would “more than make up” the resulting difference in the oil supply.Iraq, the cartel’s second-largest producer, has the capacity to increase its crude oil exports, a top government official told AFP on Monday.“We are ready to export another quarter-million barrels daily. The market’s needs will become clearer in the coming days,” he said.Saudi Arabia and others in OPEC will more than make up the Oil Flow difference in our now Full Sanctions on Iranian Oil. Iran is being given VERY BAD advice by @JohnKerry and people who helped him lead the U.S. into the very bad Iran Nuclear Deal. Big violation of Logan Act?— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 22, 2019-The official did not say whether Iraq had already discussed the increase with OPEC or with the United States. The countries that received exemptions in November were China, India, Japan, South Korea, Turkey, Italy, Greece, and Taiwan.Iraq received a separate waiver that would allow it to continue importing Iranian gas and electricity, crucial to stop up the widespread power shortages in Iraq. That initial exemption has been extended twice, and is set to end in June.Iraq last month exported just under 3.4 million barrels per day, after having agreed last year to trim production, alongside other producers, so that prices would go up.Oil prices hit a five-month high earlier this month, at more than $70 per barrel.

Spring floods in Canada's Quebec leave one dead, force evacuations-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Julie Gordon-April 25, 2019

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Spring flooding has killed one person and forced nearly 1,700 people from their homes in Canada's Quebec province, with waters expected to continue rising on Monday due to rising temperatures and more rain forecast for the coming days.Aerial photos showed entire neighborhoods submerged, with television news broadcasting video of residents frantically piling sandbags around their homes to hold back swollen rivers. An elderly woman died over the weekend after rising waters washed out the road she was driving on, according to media reports. The flooding has so far affected more than 4,000 properties across Quebec, according to the Urgence Quebec website, including homes in the Montreal suburb of Laval and Gatineau, part of the Ottawa capital region. The federal government said it is providing disaster response to Quebec, including hundreds of Canadian Armed Forces already deployed to help with sandbagging and other efforts."Citizens can rest assured that help will be provided," Canada's Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said in a statement. It is the second year of major flooding over the last three in Quebec, following massive spring floods in 2017 that caused more than C$230 million ($172 million) in insured damages in Quebec and neighboring Ontario.A spokesman for Goodale said it was too soon to compare the scale of flooding to 2017, but noted that the frequency and severity of natural disasters has increased in Canada in recent years due to climate change.Quebec Premier François Legault said on Monday that his government would provide capped compensation to victims, along with financial incentives for people to move out of flood zones."Once people have accumulated some C$100,000 in expenses, we won't compensate them any more. And if it goes beyond that, it will be to offer them to move," he told reporters in Gatineau.Separate flooding in the east coast province of New Brunswick has also led to evacuations, though waters were expected to peak on Monday, according to local media reports.(Reporting by Julie Gordon in Ottawa; editing by James Dalgleish and Sandra Maler)
