AP — Boeing will cut production of its troubled 737 Max airliner this month, underscoring the growing financial risk it faces the longer that its best-selling plane remains grounded after two deadly crashes.The company said Friday that starting in mid-April it will cut production of the plane to 42 from 52 planes per month so it can focus its attention on fixing the flight-control software that has been implicated in the crashes.The move was not a complete surprise. Boeing had already suspended deliveries of the Max last month after regulators around the world grounded the jet.Preliminary reports into accidents in Indonesia and Ethiopia found that faulty sensor readings erroneously triggered an anti-stall system that pushed the plane’s nose down. Pilots of each plane struggled in vain to regain control over the automated system.In all, 346 people died in the crashes. It will not only have to evacuate the communities around the Strip, but also [the cities of] Ashdod and Ashkelon and even Tel Aviv,” Yahya Sinwar told a group of Gaza officials.“Our fingers are on the trigger and they will remain pressed against it in order to protect our people. JTA — Democrats rejected a Republican bid to make an anti-Yemen war bill about the Israel boycott movement.How they got there takes some explaining.The Democratic-led House of Representatives on Thursday voted 247-175 to pass a bill that would end US support for Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen.President Donald Trump sees Saudi Arabia as one of the closest US allies and is likely to veto the bill. Even if he does, it represents a major domestic rebuke of his Middle East policy.Republicans in the House couldn’t scuttle the bill, but instead used the inevitable yes vote to box Democrats into a corner: The GOP members exercised a maneuver, called a motion to recommit, in an effort to attach to the bill unrelated language condemning the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement targeting Israel.Democrats don’t want to be seen as anti-Israel or soft on anti-Semitism. Nevertheless, they also knew that according to parliamentary rules, any bill that includes language irrelevant to its main subject requires the bill to get approval by the Senate — these days, Republican-led.The last time the Yemen bill was considered, in February, Republicans tried a similar maneuver, attaching language condemning anti-Semitism. In that case, Democrats surprised Republicans by allowing the language to go through. AP — Boeing will cut production of its troubled 737 Max airliner this month, underscoring the growing financial risk it faces the longer that its best-selling plane remains grounded after two deadly crashes.The company said Friday that starting in mid-April it will cut production of the plane to 42 from 52 planes per month so it can focus its attention on fixing the flight-control software that has been implicated in the crashes.The move was not a complete surprise. Boeing had already suspended deliveries of the Max last month after regulators around the world grounded the jet.Preliminary reports into accidents in Indonesia and Ethiopia found that faulty sensor readings erroneously triggered an anti-stall system that pushed the plane’s nose down. Pilots of each plane struggled in vain to regain control over the automated system.In all, 346 people died in the crashes. THE HAGUE — The United States has revoked the visa for the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, her office said Friday, over a possible investigation of American soldiers’ actions in Afghanistan.Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda would continue to pursue her duties for the Hague-based court “without fear or favor” despite the ban, her office said in a statement.The move against Bensouda, a Gambian national, comes weeks after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced restrictions on ICC staff who probe US or allied personnel.“What we can confirm is that the US authorities have revoked the prosecutor’s visa for entry into the US,” the Office of the Prosecutor of the ICC said in a statement.Bensouda’s office said that under the Rome statute governing the ICC — which Washington has declined to join since it was set up in 2002 — she had an “independent and impartial mandate.”“The prosecutor and her office will continue to undertake that statutory duty with utmost commitment and professionalism, without fear or favor,” it added.The US decision was not expected to impact Bensouda if she is traveling to the United Nations in New York where she gives regular briefings to the UN Security Council on investigation, it said.There was no immediate comment on Bensouda’s visa ban from Washington.Bensouda asked ICC judges in November 2017 for authorization to open an investigation into alleged war crimes in Afghanistan by the Taliban, Afghan government forces and international forces including US troops.The court has not yet decided whether to launch a full-blown probe.However, the administration of US President Donald Trump has struck preemptively, with Pompeo warning on March 15 that the ICC was “attacking America’s rule of law.”Pompeo said he was “announcing a policy of US visa restrictions on those individuals directly responsible for any ICC investigation of US personnel.”“If you’re responsible for the proposed ICC investigation of US personnel in connection with the situation in Afghanistan you should not assume that you still have, or will get, a visa or that you will permitted to enter the United States,” Pompeo added.

Hamas’s chief in Gaza said Saturday that if there is a war, Israel will need to evacuate its civilians from Tel Aviv as well as the border communities, a day after the terror group’s leader said talks to achieve a truce were advancing.“If the Gaza Strip is dragged into war, Israel will suffer. It will not only have to evacuate the communities around the Strip, but also [the cities of] Ashdod and Ashkelon and even Tel Aviv,” Yahya Sinwar told a group of Gaza officials.“Our fingers are on the trigger and they will remain pressed against it in order to protect our people. We will be the sword and shield,” Sinwar said, according to the Hamas-linked Al-Aqsa TV.Sinwar also noted the role played by Egyptian mediators in negotiations to broker understandings between Israel and the terror group, saying the country “had a significant role in easing the siege imposed on Gaza, and we are grateful.”Both Israel and Egypt enforce a number of restrictions on the movement of people and goods into and out of Gaza. JTA — Democrats rejected a Republican bid to make an anti-Yemen war bill about the Israel boycott movement.How they got there takes some explaining.The Democratic-led House of Representatives on Thursday voted 247-175 to pass a bill that would end US support for Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen.President Donald Trump sees Saudi Arabia as one of the closest US allies and is likely to veto the bill. Even if he does, it represents a major domestic rebuke of his Middle East policy.Republicans in the House couldn’t scuttle the bill, but instead used the inevitable yes vote to box Democrats into a corner: The GOP members exercised a maneuver, called a motion to recommit, in an effort to attach to the bill unrelated language condemning the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement targeting Israel.Democrats don’t want to be seen as anti-Israel or soft on anti-Semitism. Nevertheless, they also knew that according to parliamentary rules, any bill that includes language irrelevant to its main subject requires the bill to get approval by the Senate — these days, Republican-led.The last time the Yemen bill was considered, in February, Republicans tried a similar maneuver, attaching language condemning anti-Semitism. In that case, Democrats surprised Republicans by allowing the language to go through. Sources among Palestinian prisoners held in Israel said Friday that Israeli authorities had agreed to concessions in order to avoid a mass hunger strike planned to start Sunday. Israeli officials vehemently denied any such concessions had been offered.Palestinian Authority officials have said prisoners plan to strike to protest their incarceration conditions — particularly recent Israeli measures to restrict illicit cellphone usage by the prisoners, which include the installation of jamming systems.There is concern that a mass hunger strike could increase military tensions with the Hamas terror group along the Gaza border, at a time when Egyptian mediators are seeking to secure a long-term ceasefire between the sides.Unnamed sources told the Haaretz newspaper that Israel had agreed to install payphones inside prisons.“It doesn’t matter if the public phones are under surveillance, because we only want to speak to our families,” a source said. “If there’s a payphone we don’t need to smuggle cellphones.”Prisoners are also said to be demanding family visitations from Gaza residents and more TV stations in the wards. The source told Haaretz Israeli authorities had agreed to hold further discussions after next week’s election.Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan’s office strongly denied that prisoners had been offered any carrots to avoid the strike.The row over incarceration conditions has recently sparked violence.Twice last month, Hamas prisoners violently attacked guards at Ketziot Prison, with one guard sustaining serious injuries from a stab wound to his neck.
