Bernie Sanders says he’ll soon release decade of tax returns-Presidential hopeful assures paperwork will ‘bore you to death,’ vows 2020 campaign will have strong protocols to prevent repeat of sexual harassment issues among staff-By JUANA SUMMERS-TOI-FEB 28,19
WASHINGTON (AP) — Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday pledged to “sooner than later” make public 10 years of his tax returns and vowed to support the eventual Democratic presidential nominee, saying he held no grudges against the Democratic National Committee over his unsuccessful 2016 campaign.Sanders appeared at a town hall hosted by CNN ahead of the official launch of his 2020 presidential campaign with events this weekend in Brooklyn, where he grew up, and Chicago, where he graduated from college. He joins a crowded field of nearly a dozen other contenders, including a number of fellow senators.Asked Monday whether he would release a decade’s worth of his tax returns, as 2020 rival Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren has already done, Sanders said that he would.“Our tax returns will bore you to death, nothing special about them,” Sanders said, adding that his wife, Jane, does most of his taxes rather than using an accountant.Sanders’ fellow contenders for the Democratic nomination have made similar pledges of transparency, in stark contrast with US President Donald Trump, who has refused to release his tax returns, saying they are under audit. He is the only president in modern history to decline to do so.During his first presidential bid, Sanders endured questioning by Hillary Clinton over why he had not released several years of his tax returns and had instead opted to release just his 2014 tax returns. Sanders said Monday that he would have released more of his tax returns had he been the Democratic nominee.Sanders’ plan to release a decade’s worth of tax returns was first reported by National Journal.Sanders took questions from attendees in Washington on a variety of issues, including allegations of sexual harassment and other mistreatment of female staffers who worked on his first presidential campaign.Sanders said his 2018 senatorial campaign had instituted strong protocols to handle any incidents of harassment. He said that all staffers on his presidential campaign would receive training on harassment and would have access to an independent entity if they experience harassment.“I was very upset to learn what I learned,” Sanders said, adding, “It was very painful, very painful.”Sanders clashed with the DNC during his first White House bid, especially after WikiLeaks released stolen documents and emails in which DNC officials appeared to support Clinton’s campaign over Sanders’. Sanders said Monday that he did not have lingering issues with the DNC, despite believing the group was “not quite even-handed” in 2016.“I think we have come a long way since then, and I fully expect to be treated quite as well as anyone else,” Sanders said.In response to a question Monday, he defended the role he played as a surrogate for Clinton’s campaign after she won the nomination. He referenced an October 2016 letter sent to him by Clinton in which she thanked him for campaigning for her in multiple states.Sanders said he would back the eventual 2020 Democratic nominee, whomever that may be.“I hope and believe that every Democratic candidate will come together after the nominee is selected and make certain that Donald Trump is not re-elected president of the United States,” Sanders said. “I pledge certainly to do that.”Asked how he would engage with Trump on the debate stage if he is the Democratic presidential nominee, Sanders said he would “bring a lie detector along.”“Every time he lies, it goes ‘beep,'” Sanders said as the audience laughed. “That would be the first thing.”

Australian Cardinal George Pell convicted of child sex crimes-Most senior Catholic cleric ever charged with abuse faces 50-year prison sentence for molesting 2 choirboys in 1996, moments after celebrating Mass-By Rod McGuirk-TOI-FEB 28,19
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The most senior Catholic cleric ever charged with child sex abuse has been convicted of molesting two choirboys moments after celebrating Mass, dealing a new blow to the Catholic hierarchy’s credibility after a year of global revelations of abuse and cover-up.Cardinal George Pell, Pope Francis’s top financial adviser and the Vatican’s economy minister, bowed his head but then regained his composure as the 12-member jury delivered unanimous verdicts in the Victoria state County Court on December 11 after more than two days of deliberation. The court had until Tuesday forbidden publication of any details about the trial.Pell faces a potential maximum 50-year prison term after a sentencing hearing that begins on Wednesday. He lodged an appeal last week of the convictions.Details of the trial had been suppressed because until Tuesday, Pell had faced a second trial in April on charges that he indecently assaulted two boys aged 9 or 10 and 11 or 12 as a young priest in the late 1970s in a public pool in his hometown of Ballarat.Prosecutor Fran Dalziel told the court on Tuesday that the Ballarat charges had been dropped and asked for the suppression order to be lifted. The move came days after a judge ruled out two key prosecution witnesses in the Ballarat case.A Vatican spokesman said the “painful” news of Pell’s conviction has shocked many people, but added that the prelate “has reiterated his innocence and has the right to defend himself” until the last level of justice.Acting Holy See spokesman Alessandro Gisotti read a statement to reporters Tuesday at the Vatican but didn’t take questions. He said Pope Francis has confirmed “precautionary measures” already taken against Pell, including a ban on his saying Mass in public and “as is the rule, contact in any way or form with minors.”The victim who testified at Pell’s trial said after the conviction was revealed that he has experienced “shame, loneliness, depression and struggle.” In his statement, the man said it had taken him years to understand the impact the assault had on his life.Lawyer Lisa Flynn said the father of the second victim, who died of a heroin overdose in 2014 at the age of 31, is planning to sue the church or Pell individually once the appeal is resolved.Pell’s lawyer, Robert Richter, initially wanted details of the trial suppressed until his appeal was heard, but later withdraw the application.Pell was surrounded by a crush of cameras and members of the public as he was ushered from the courthouse to a waiting car. “You’re a monster!” one man shouted. “You’re going to burn in hell, you freak!”“Are you sorry?” one woman shouted. Pell did not respond.Another of Pell’s lawyers, Paul Galbally, said Pell continued to maintain his innocence. The revelations came in the same month that the Vatican announced Francis approved the expulsion from the priesthood of a former high-ranking American cardinal, Theodore McCarrick, for sexual abuse of minors and adults. The convictions were also confirmed days after Francis concluded his extraordinary summit of Catholic leaders summoned to Rome for a tutorial on preventing clergy sexual abuse and protecting children from predator priests.Australia’s ranking bishop, Mark Coleridge, who delivered the homily at the final Mass of the summit, said Pell’s convictions “shocked many across Australia and around the world, including the Catholic Bishops of Australia.”“The bishops agree that everyone should be equal under the law and we respect the Australian legal system,” said Coleridge, who is president of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference. The lifting of the suppression order was welcomed by SNAP, a US support group for victim of clergy abuse.“We hope that his conviction will not only bring healing to his victims in Australia but hope to survivors across the world who are yearning for accountability at the top levels of the church,” SNAP said in a statement. “We believe (the) conviction will make Australian children safer and parents and parishioners better informed about how to prevent sexual abuse.”The jury convicted Pell of abusing two boys whom he had caught swigging sacramental wine in a rear room of Melbourne’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral in late 1996, as hundreds of worshipers were streaming out of Sunday services.Pell, now 77 but 55 at the time, had just been named the most senior Catholic in Australia’s second-largest city, Melbourne. The boys were both 13 years old. The jury also found Pell guilty of indecently assaulting one of the boys in a corridor more than a month later.Pell had maintained his innocence throughout, describing the accusations as “vile and disgusting conduct” that went against everything he believed in.Richter, his lawyer, had told the jury that only a “mad man” would take the risk of abusing boys in such a public place. He said it was “laughable” that Pell would have been able to expose his penis and force the victim to take it in his mouth, given the cumbersome robes he was wearing. Both he and Chief Judge Peter Kidd urged the jury of eight men and four women not to punish Pell for all the failings of the Catholic Church, which in Australia have been staggering.“You must not scapegoat Cardinal Pell,” Kidd told the jury.Along with Ireland and the US, Australia has been devastated by the impact of the clerical abuse scandal, with a Royal Commission inquiry finding that 4,444 people reported they had been abused at more than 1,000 Catholic institutions across Australia between 1980 and 2015.Pell’s own hometown of Ballarat had such a high incidence of abuse — and, survivors say, a correlated higher-than-average incidence of suicide — that the city warranted its own case study in the Royal Commission report. As a result, Pell’s trial amounted to something of a reckoning for survivors, with the brash and towering cardinal becoming the poster child for all that went wrong with the way the Catholic Church handled the scandal. The conviction capped a year that had been so dominated by revelations of high-ranking sex abuse and cover-up that analysts openly speak of a crisis unparalleled since the Reformation. In addition to Pell, the allegations against McCarrick of groping a minor in the 1970s and of sleeping with adult seminarians became public. As a result of the scandal, Francis’ approval ratings have tanked in the United States, and his standing with conservative Catholics around the world — already on shaky ground over his outreach to divorcees — has plunged.Up until the verdict, Pell’s lawyers had appeared confident that they had established a reasonable doubt and had expected quick verdicts of not guilty. When the jury chairman delivered the first guilty verdict, Pell’s hands slipped from the arm rests of the chair where he sat in the dock at the back of the courtroom. His head bowed after the second verdict, but he restored his composure for the final verdicts.Pell, who walked to and from court throughout his monthlong trial with a crutch under his right arm, was released on bail to undergo surgical knee replacements in Sydney on Dec. 14. Prosecutor Mark Gibson did not oppose bail, saying the surgery would be more easily managed outside the prison system. The first four offenses occurred at the first or second Solemn Mass that Archbishop Pell celebrated as leader of the magnificent blue-stone century-old cathedral in the center of Melbourne. Pell was wearing his full robes — though not his staff or pointed bishops’ hat — at the time. The now 34-year-old survivor told the court that Pell orally raped him, then crouched and fondled the complainant’s genitals while masturbating.“I was young and I didn’t really know what had happened to me. I didn’t really know what it was, if it was normal,” the complainant told the court. The other victim died of a heroin overdose in 2014 without ever complaining of the abuse, and even denying to his suspicious mother that he had been molested while he was part of the choir.Neither boy can now be identified, because it is illegal to name victims of sexual assault in Victoria state.Pell was initially charged with orally raping the second boy. But that charge was downgraded to indecent assault when the victim who testified said that he couldn’t see the other’s boy mouth at that moment from his vantage point.More than a month later, the complainant testified that Pell pushed him against a cathedral corridor wall after a Mass and squeezed the boy’s genitals painfully before walking away in silence.“Pell was in robes and I was in robes. He squeezed and kept walking,” the complainant told the jurors. “I didn’t tell anyone at the time because I didn’t want to jeopardize anything. I didn’t want to rock the boat with my family, my schooling, my life.”The complainant testified that he feared that making such accusations against a powerful church man would cost him his place in the choir and with it his scholarship to prestigious St. Kevin’s College.Pell pleaded not guilty to one count of sexual penetration of a child under 16 and four counts of willfully committing an indecent act with or in the presence of a child under 16 in late 1996 and early 1997.He did not testify at his trial. But the jury saw a video recording of an interview he gave Australian detectives in Rome in 2016 in which he stridently denied the allegations.Pell grimaced, appearing incredulous and distressed, waved his arms over his head and muttered to himself as the detectives detailed the accusations that his victim had leveled against him a year earlier.“The allegations involve vile and disgusting conduct contrary to everything I hold dear and contrary to the explicit teachings of the church which I have spent my life representing,” Pell told police.Richter told the jury that the prosecution case compounded a series of improbabilities and impossibilities. He told the jury that Pell could not have “parted” his robes as the complainant had described. The jury was handed the actual cumbersome robes Pell wore as archbishop. Over his regular clothes, Pell would wear a full-length white robe called an alb that was tied around his waist with a rope-like cincture. Over that, he would drape a 3-meter (10-foot) band of cloth called a stole around his neck. The outermost garment was the long poncho-like chasuble.More than 20 witnesses, including clerics, choristers and altar servers, testified during the trial. None recalled ever seeing the complainant and the other victim break from a procession of choristers, altar servers and clerics to go to the back room. The complainant testified that he and his friend had run from the procession and back into the cathedral through a side door to, as Gibson, the prosecutor, said, “have some fun.”Monsignor Charles Portelli, who was the cathedral’s master of ceremonies in the 1990s, testified that he was always with Pell after Mass to help him disrobe in the sacristy. The defense argued that Pell’s usual practice was to linger at the cathedral front steps talking to members of the congregation after Mass. But Gibson said there was evidence that Pell didn’t always chat outside and had the opportunity to commit the crimes. The lifting of the gag order comes after Francis charted a new course for the Catholic Church to confront clergy sexual abuse and cover-up, a scandal that has consumed his papacy and threatens the credibility of the Catholic hierarchy at large.Opening a first-ever Vatican summit on preventing abuse, Francis warned 190 bishops and religious superiors last week that their flocks were demanding concrete action, not just words, to punish predator priests and keep children safe. He offered them 21 proposals to consider going forward, some of them obvious and easy to adopt, others requiring new laws. But Francis went into the meeting even more weakened and discredited after one of his top advisers was convicted of the very crime he has now decided is worth fighting on a universal scale.Pell’s downfall will invariably tarnish the pope, since Francis appointed Pell economy minister in 2014 even though some of the allegations against him were known at the time.In October, Francis finally cut Pell loose, removing him as a member of his informal cabinet. Pell technically remains prefect of the Vatican’s economy ministry, but his five-year term expires this year and is not expected to be renewed.

Iran’s Zarif says he resigned to return foreign ministry to ‘proper’ role-Tehran’s top envoy urges diplomats to not follow him in quitting, but to remain and work in defense of the country; calls infighting ‘deadly poison’-By AFP-TOI-FEB 28,19
TEHRAN, Iran — Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif urged Iranian diplomats Tuesday not to resign en masse following his shock announcement he was quitting but to keep up their work defending Iran’s interests. The announcement on Instagram late on Monday by Zarif, the lead negotiator of Iran’s landmark 2015 nuclear deal with major powers, prompted reports that large numbers of diplomats were considering resigning too in a show of support. But in comments to ministry staff on Tuesday, Zarif said: “I advise all you dear brothers and sisters in the foreign ministry and embassies to resolutely follow your duties in defense of the country and refrain from such acts.”The official IRNA news agency said Zarif had also commented for the first time on the reason for his announcement.“I hope my resignation will act as a spur for the foreign ministry to regain its proper statutory role in the conduct of foreign affairs,” it quoted him as saying. There was no immediate indication President President Hassan Rouhani had accepted the resignation and a petition urging him not to was signed by a majority of members of parliament, senior lawmakers said.According to Iran’s Entekhab news agency, Zarif’s resignation appears to be linked to a surprise visit by Syrian President Bashar Assad to Tehran on Monday. The top diplomat was not present at any of the meetings Assad had with the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Rouhani, according to semi-official news agency ISNA.Entekhab said it tried to reach Zarif and received the following message: “After the photos of today’s meetings, Javad Zarif no longer has any credibility in the world as the foreign minister!”As the lead negotiator in the nuclear deal, Zarif’s standing within Iran’s political establishment took a hit when the US withdrew from it and reimposed crippling unilateral sanctions last year.Ultra-conservative MPs tried to impeach him, only backing down in December as the initiative lost steam.Zarif said his main concern throughout the negotiations for the nuclear deal had been about pressure from inside Iran.-‘Deadly poison’-In an interview with the conservative Jomhoori Eslami newspaper published Tuesday, he said partisan disputes over foreign policy were “a deadly poison.”“We first have to remove our foreign policy from the issue of party and factional fighting,” Zarif said in the interview conducted last week, according to Reuters. “The deadly poison for foreign policy is for foreign policy to become an issue of party and factional fighting.”Zarif told the newspaper that he had followed the instructions of Khamenei when negotiating a landmark 2015 nuclear deal, over which he has faced criticism criticism at home from hardliners.Zarif said it is US President Donald Trump who should be criticized for pulling out of the agreement last May.“Instead of condemning Trump, why do you come and condemn the elected president of the people? You come and condemn the foreign policy?” he said. “What result does that have? The result is that people will become hopeless about the future.”Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Gaza reporter appeals Hamas prison sentence, fine-Judge postpones hearing for Hajar Harb, accused of false news, defamation, causing strife and being an impostor, until March-By Agencies and TOI staff-FEB 28,19
GAZA CITY — A Gaza journalist appealed Tuesday her six-month prison term and fine over her reporting on alleged corruption within the Hamas-run health ministry.Hajar Harb appeared before a Hamas-run court in Gaza City, where the judge postponed the hearing until March.Fathi Sabah, a journalist campaigning on her behalf, says it’s the first time Hamas authorities have prosecuted a journalist for their work since the Islamist terror group group seized Gaza by force in 2007.A 2016 report for al-Araby TV by Harb highlighted misconduct at the Hamas-run health ministry, where she alleged healthy people paid doctors to issue referrals to hospitals abroad, in order to circumvent Israeli and Egyptian travel restrictions on the Gaza Strip. Two doctors filed a complaint against her and she was charged by authorities with the publication of false news, defamation, causing strife and being an impostor. On Monday, Amnesty International called on Hamas to drop all charges against Harb for doing her work as a journalist.“The prosecution of Hajar Harb is an outrageous assault on media freedom,” said Saleh Higazi, Deputy Middle East and North Africa Director at Amnesty International. “The authorities in Gaza are blatantly seeking to punish her for exposing corruption within the Hamas administration. The authorities must drop all the charges against her immediately.”The rights organization Reporters Without Borders scores the Palestinians 134th out of 180 countries in the world ranked for press freedom, with a high weighting factor for its abuse of journalists.“Interrogations and detention without any charge are part of the price that journalists pay for the political rivalry between Fatah and Hamas in the Palestinian territories,” the organization noted in its 2017 report.
Indifference to human rights in Mideast fuels atrocities – Amnesty-Apart from ‘rare action,’ rights watchdog says government crackdowns on civil society going largely unpunished, leading to growing impunity-By AFP-TOI-FEB 28,19
Global indifference is fueling atrocities across the Middle East, rights watchdog Amnesty International warned Tuesday in a report condemning what it said was growing impunity.“The crackdown on civil society actors and political opponents increased significantly in Egypt, Iran and Saudi Arabia,” the rights watchdog said in its annual regional report.“Across the region, authorities used arbitrary detention, excessive force against protesters and administrative measures to restrict civil society,” Amnesty said. The human rights group said that “global indifference to human rights violations” had fueled “atrocities and impunity” in the region in 2018.It cited the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul On October 2, saying the “case has not been followed by concrete action to ensure those responsible for his murder are brought to justice.”It applauded “rare action” from countries like Denmark or Germany to suspended their supply of weapons to Riyadh, but noted that “key allies of the Kingdom, including the USA, UK and France, have taken no such action.”The rights group also denounced Riyadh’s military intervention in Yemen, saying the Saudi-led coalition battling rebels is “responsible for war crimes” and has contributed to a “humanitarian catastrophe” in the embattled country.Amnesty denounced what it said was Israel’s crackdown on demonstrations in Gaza and the West Bank, which it said killed “at least 195 Palestinians, including 41 children.”Amnesty also criticized Iran, including its repression of mass demonstrations over deteriorating socio-economic conditions.“Security forces violently dispersed the protests, beating unarmed protesters and using live ammunition, tear gas and water cannons against them, causing deaths and injuries,” it said.It denounced “war crimes” committed in Syria, Libya and Yemen, which have been ravaged by deadly conflicts and humanitarian catastrophes. In the three countries, “military forces with air power carried out indiscriminate airstrikes and direct attacks on civilian homes, hospitals and medical facilities, sometimes using internationally banned cluster munitions,” Amnesty said. The rights group pointed to some positive developments in the region which it said serve as “glimmers of hope.”Across the Maghreb, provisions to combat violence against women came into effect. In Saudi Arabia authorities lifted a driving ban on women – “even as they imprisoned women human rights defenders who had campaigned for this very right,” Amnesty said.
PA said to nab Hamas-led cell that was readying to carry out attacks in Israel-Terrorists were planning bombings, Israeli TV says; PA security official won”t confirm or deny report-By Adam Rasgon-TOI-FEB 28,19
The Palestinian Authority security forces recently collared a six-person Hamas-led cell in Nablus that was preparing to carry out terrorist attacks in Israel employing explosive devices, Channel 12 news reported earlier this week, without citing a source. The PA security forces first arrested the commander of the cell, a Hamas terror group operative whose deputy chief, Saleh al-Arouri, transferred $50,000 through the United Arab Emirates, and then nabbed its remaining five members, the report said. The entirety of the cell, which was receiving orders from the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, did not belong to Hamas, the report added, stating that its commander had recruited persons unaffiliated with the terror group in an effort to make it more difficult for the PA security forces and Israeli intelligence to identify them.A PA security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he could not confirm or deny the details of the report, but noted Ramallah’s security forces constantly work to crack down on all Hamas terror activity in the West Bank.“We have very clear orders to stamp out Hamas military activity and we are always making efforts to that end,” he told The Times of Israel on Monday. “We confiscate every transfer of funds to Hamas from Gaza or abroad. We also regularly arrest its members we suspect of planning operations and take away their weapons.”Since Hamas ousted the Fatah-dominated PA from Gaza in 2007, Ramallah has made substantial efforts to wipe out Hamas’s military and financial infrastructure in the West Bank. The security official said the PA security forces were taking action against Hamas’s military activities to protect Palestinians, but also Israelis.“We are undertaking this work to safeguard our people and make certain they live in a stable environment. We have no interest in allowing the West Bank to turn into another Gaza,” he said, adding that Ramallah also wants to ensure Hamas harms no Israeli.Since shortly after Hamas took over Gaza, Israel and Egypt have maintained a number of restrictions on the movement of people and goods into and out of the coastal enclave, which have contributed to a humanitarian crisis there.Israel holds that the limitations are kept in place in order to prevent Hamas from transferring weapons or the means to build them into Gaza.In the past 12 years, Israel and Hamas and other terror groups have fought three wars in and around Gaza. The official said that recent tensions between the PA and Israel have not affected Ramallah’s willingness to confront Hamas activities in the West Bank.“We remain committed to doing this work,” he said. “We are not politicians, but rather professionals concerned with ensuring safety and stability here.”Israel’s security cabinet decided last week to approve withholding NIS 500 million ($138 million) of tax revenues from the Palestinian Authority. The decision was a move to start implementing a new law that permits Israel to withhold tax money from Ramallah over payments the PA makes to security prisoners and the families of dead attackers.Israel collects sales, customs, and excise taxes on behalf of the Palestinians every month, and transfers them to the PA’s coffers.PA President Mahmoud Abbas has condemned Israel for moving to withhold the funds, arguing that the Israeli decision amounts to “piracy” of Palestinian funds.Israeli officials have defended the move, arguing that the PA’s policy of paying security prisoners and slain terrorists incentivizes violence and terrorism.Abbas has also said the Palestinians would not accept any of the taxes Israel collects on behalf of the PA, if it does not transfer the full amount to Ramallah. If the PA follows through, it could place itself in dire financial straits, as it would be turning down its largest source of income.Citing Palestinian officials, Reuters reported last week that Israel currently collects and transfers NIS 800 million ($222 million) in total taxes to the PA every month. Avi Dichter, the chair of the Knesset Defense Committee, has said Israel would spread out the withholding of the tax money over 12 months, meaning approximately 5 percent of each month’s NIS 800 million would be withheld.
Netanyahu says ‘good riddance’ as Iran’s foreign minister tenders resignation-PM welcomes sudden departure of Mohammad Javad Zarif, who negotiated the 2015 nuclear deal he bitterly opposed-By Agencies and TOI staff-FEB 28,19
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said “good riddance” on Tuesday after Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif abruptly announced his resignation.“Zarif is gone. Good riddance,” Netanyahu said of the lead negotiator of Iran’s landmark 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers that he had bitterly opposed.“As long as I am here, Iran will never acquire nuclear weapons,” he tweeted.Zarif resigned late Monday without warning, offering an “apology” to the nation as the nuclear deal he negotiated stands on the verge of collapse after the US withdrew last year from the accord. The veteran diplomat first offered a vague Instagram post saying, “I apologize for my inability to continue serving and for all the shortcomings during my term in office.” The post included a drawing of Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, as Monday marked the commemoration of her birth.A Foreign Ministry spokesman, Abbas Mousavi, confirmed to the state-run IRNA news agency minutes later that Zarif had resigned but gave no reason for his departure.Zarif’s resignation, if accepted by Iran’s relatively moderate President Hassan Rouhani, would leave the cleric without one of his main allies in pushing the Islamic Republic toward further negotiations with the West.Zarif has served as Rouhani’s foreign minister since August 2013 and has been under constant pressure and criticism by hardliners who oppose his policy of detente with the West, as well as by the Trump administration, which has hammered away at the nuclear deal he helped broker. It remains unclear why Zarif chose to leave his post now and what effect it will have on the atomic accord, which Iran has been on record as complying with. While former US secretary of state John Kerry established a working rapport with Zarif, the Trump administration has taken a much harder line toward the so-called moderate.US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo dismissed his counterpart’s announcement on Monday, saying Zarif’s departure would not change Washington’s policy toward Iran.“We note Zarif’s resignation. We’ll see if it sticks,” Pompeo tweeted. “Either way, he and Rouhani are just front men for a corrupt religious mafia.“Our policy is unchanged — the regime must behave like a normal country and respect its people,” he said.Inside Iran, reaction to Zarif’s resignation was swift, with many prominent lawmakers calling on him to reconsider the decision. On Tuesday, Iran’s semi-official Fars News agency quoted a “knowledgeable source” as saying that Zarif is expected to resume his post in the coming days.According to the report, Zarif resigned to protest the “lack of coordination with senior officials in the administration regarding the visit of Syrian President Bashar Assad and meetings with Rouhani” that were not attended by Zarif.Iran’s powerful parliamentary committee on national security and foreign affairs was scheduled to discuss Zarif’s resignation later Tuesday.

Setback for Israeli lunar lander as computer glitch prevents scheduled maneuver-Engineers examining data from Beresheet spacecraft to learn why it rebooted itself, causing automatic abort of trajectory adjustment needed to get to the moon-By Melanie Lidman and TOI staff-FEB 28,19
A hitch in computer systems Monday evening caused an Israeli lunar spacecraft to miss a scheduled adjustment in its trajectory en route to the moon, engineers reported on Tuesday. The maneuver by the Beresheet craft was postponed after the space vehicle’s on-board computer executed an independent restart. As a result, the craft automatically canceled an engine burn scheduled to keep it on track for an April lunar landing.“At the moment we are not very worried. Of course it isn’t nice, but we are still optimistic,” said SpaceIL CEO Dr. Ido Anteby.Engineers on Tuesday were still examining the data to figure out what happened. Opher Doron, the general manager of the Space Division at Israel Aerospace Industries, said that the engineers had not encountered a similar problem during simulations. The spacecraft is still set to land on the moon on April 11, as engineers built in a number of buffer days in case of delays, said Doron.Beresheet is headed to the moon through a roundabout path that helps the tiny spacecraft, about the size of a car, save on fuel. The spacecraft will circle Earth six or seven times in a series of growing ellipses before jumping into the moon’s orbit on April 4.The setback came a day after Beresheet successfully completed its first maneuver by firing its engine while tens of thousands of miles away from Earth. The first maneuver was at the furthest point in the first ellipse, nudging the spacecraft toward a second, larger ellipse. The second maneuver, set for late Monday night, was scheduled to take place at the closest point to earth along the first ellipse, just 600 kilometers (370 miles) above the northern hemisphere.Engineers are only in contact with the spacecraft for about half an hour every four hours, but Anteby said all the communication windows are working as expected. “We know we are going to lose communication, and then we’re just waiting and waiting and waiting for it to come back, and it doesn’t always come back at exactly the same moment you expect,” he said. “And then suddenly you get the communication back, and this time we saw that the maneuver wasn’t completed.”Following the successful launch of Beresheet into space early Friday morning, the team in the control room began looking into a small problem with its star navigation system. The navigation system allows the spacecraft, which is spinning in space, to figure out its orientation. Understanding the orientation is crucial for a number of operations, including ensuring that the onboard engines that direct the spacecraft to the correct trajectory are activated in the right direction. Anteby said on Tuesday that engineers were checking to see if the involuntary reset was a side effect of the issues with the star navigation system.Aviv Priel, an engineer who is part of the team that controls the spacecraft’s maneuvers, said the team had discussed whether to put off the planned maneuvers while trying to understand more about the star navigation issue.Priel said the team believes glare from the sun on the the spacecraft’s sensors is making it more difficult than expected for the spacecraft to orient itself according to the position of the stars. However, he added that the issue only happens at certain angles, and the team thus far is able to manipulate the spacecraft to obtain a full reading.“The thing with the star tracker is it brought a lot of uncertainties with the first maneuver,” said Priel, referring to the successful maneuver on Sunday. “At some points, we weren’t sure if we should put it off. But we overcame it, we implemented it, and it was beautiful to see. During the [first] maneuver we had online communication — not immediately, with about a two-second delay, but we saw it almost real time.“It was very exciting to see the main engine turn on and the measurements and the star navigation system working,” he said. “It was exciting and breathtaking as well.”Beresheet, which means “Genesis” in Hebrew, lifted from Cape Canaveral atop a Falcon 9 rocket from the private US-based SpaceX company of entrepreneur Elon Musk.If successful, Beresheet will make history twice: as the first private-sector landing on the Moon, and the first from Israel.

US officials discuss Israeli-Palestinian peace with Gulf leaders-Trump Mideast envoys traveling the region to drum up support for administration’s long-awaited proposal-By Agencies and TOI staff-FEB 28,19
US officials Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt have met with leaders in the United Arab Emirates and Oman as part of a regional tour to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s adviser and son-in-law, and Greenblatt, the US Middle East peace envoy, met with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan on Monday, the US embassy in the UAE said.“They discussed increasing cooperation between the United States and the United Arab Emirates, and the Trump administration’s efforts to facilitate peace between the Israelis and Palestinians,” it said a statement. “Additionally, they discussed ways to improve the entire region through economic investment.”The US officials addressed the same issues in talks with Oman’s Sultan Qaboos on Monday.Brian Hook, the US special representative for Iran, also attended the meetings.Earlier this month Kushner briefed countries at a conference in Warsaw on Washington’s plans for a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians to be formally presented after Israeli elections in April.Kushner said in a Monday interview that the US has tried to figure out a “realistic… and fair solution” to the issue.“We’ve focused on the following four principles that we’ve used in which to create the plan,” he said in an interview aired on UAE-based Sky News Arabia.“First principle is to have freedom. We want people to be able to have the freedom of opportunity, the freedom of religion, the freedom of worship, regardless of your faith.“Respect. We want all people to have dignity and to respect each other. Opportunity. We want people to be able to better their lives and not allow their grandfather’s conflict to hijack their children’s future. And the final one is security.”Top officials from Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain — none of which recognize Israel — attended the Warsaw conference alongside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who called the talks a “turning point.”But the Palestinians rejected the meeting as an “American conspiracy” with aims to “normalize” Israeli control of the West Bank. The US recognition of contested Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, along with the cancellation of hundreds of millions of dollars in American aid to the Palestinians, have prompted the Palestinians to cut off ties with the White House and preemptively reject the peace plan. They say that all signs indicate the plan will fall far short of their longstanding goal of establishing an independent Palestinian state in the Israeli-controlled West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip.Even if it disappoints the Palestinians, the plan could also run into Israeli opposition. Netanyahu’s governing coalition is composed of religious and nationalist hardliners who oppose serious concessions to the Palestinians. With Netanyahu seeking reelection, and pledging to form a similar coalition if he wins, it is unlikely that he would make any concessions, particularly before the April 9 vote.On Monday, Netanyahu’s Likud and the New Right party sparred over the framework revealed by Kushner, with both parties warning that the other would allow the establishment of a Palestinian state under the Trump plan.According to a diplomat who spoke with the Associated Press last week, Kushner has said that despite the odds the plan faces, “privately, people are much more flexible.”
Give peace a chance? Jared Kushner reveals vague details of his administration’s perennially approaching peace plan, which political rivals use as an opportunity for infighting-By Jacob Magid-TOI-FEB 28,19
1. Not-so friendly fire: US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law/senior adviser Jared Kusher has revealed details of his country’s perennially approaching peace plan, though Israel’s top two dailies focus more on the right-wing infighting the vague outline has caused.New Right co-chair Naftali Bennett — whose party is polling just above the electoral threshold — picks a fight with the big tuna, Likud, saying Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s party will cave to pressure from the Americans and invite the “disastrous” reality of a Palestinian state-Bennett goes full-on alarmist in an interview with Israel Radio, asserting that only the New Right will be able to prevent “the deaths of thousands of Israelis,” which he suggested would be the result of Trump’s “Deal of the Century.” He was comparing the current peace proposal to the Oslo Accords of the mid-90s which were followed by the deadly Second Intifada. While the Likud party does indeed respond to its right-wing rival, it focuses less on its anti-Palestinian state credentials and more on chastising Bennett for friendly fire within the right-wing camp after he had promised to play nice:“When Bennett and Shaked established the New Right they said they were doing it in order to pull votes from Lapid and Gantz to enlarge the right-wing bloc, and that they wouldn’t subject us to friendly fire. Now they are making false charges against Likud with the goal of pulling votes from Likud, which will bring about the rise of the left-wing government of Lapid and Gantz, whose party will be bigger than Likud.” 2. State-minus? As for the peace plan itself, Kushner tells Sky News Arabic that it will offer “realistic solutions for the issues of 2019” and will require a unified Palestinian leadership in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. While the PA has been barely talking to Hamas as of late, let alone the White House, Kushner likely was able to unify rival Palestinian factions over his failure to mention a sovereign Palestinian state in the Sky New interview.Analysis on the plan is limited but Yedioth’s Sever Plotzker makes clear that he’s not buying any of it, calling the initiative “another doomed statement by an American president who can’t control his mouth.”Plotzker points to previous Trump initiatives that were introduced with gusto, but have since not gone exactly as planned: the cancellation of trade deals with Canada and the EU, the quick and complete pullout of US forces from Syria, and the “big, beautiful” Mexico border wall.He argues that Kushner’s belief in “economic peace” places him squarely in a camp with Netanyahu and a minority of late former prime ministers (he cites Shamir and Meir) who argue that Israel can still thrive despite its military control over the Palestinians. 3. Skin in the game: Hebrew media basks in the glory of Sunday night’s Oscar win for Israeli filmmaker Guy Nattiv and his short film “Skin,” which was awarded after papers already had gone to press the day prior.Israel Hayom quotes President Reuven Rivlin characterizing the victory as “a gift for our children.”Nattiv tells the Hebrew daily, “My grandparents were Holocaust survivors and this film is Israeli every way; it educates against racism.” To be clear, the 20-minute movie, about a gang war that breaks out in a small town after a black man smiles at a white child, was shot in the US.Reviewing “Skin,” Yedioth’s Benjamin Tobias says, “It flows, it ignites, it leaves you with a pit in your stomach, but it mainly shows what talented people have grown out of the Israeli film industry in the last twenty years — the same industry that so many people in Israel insist on correcting or canceling.”Yedioth points out that Nattiv is just the second Israeli filmmaker to win an Oscar. He shares the rare honor with Moshe Mizrachi, who won an Oscar in 1977 for his movie “Madame Rosa.” 4. Don’t let the door hit you on your way out: Most of the Israeli press does not seem interested in shedding a tear in its reporting of Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s abrupt resignation.Yedioth refers to Zarif as “the smiles diplomat” and says he will now be able to return to Tehran University where he can teach international relations courses based on all that he learned during his time in the US.“Zarif is gone. Good riddance,” Netanyahu tweets of the lead negotiator of Iran’s landmark 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers that he had bitterly opposed. “As long as I am here, Iran will never acquire nuclear weapons,”But Haaretz’s Tzvi Barel calls the resignation a “gift” to hardliners in Iran, with whom Zarif sparred more often than not in his push for the nuclear deal.Barel says Zarif was the first domino to fall as a result of Iranian frustration with the country’s spiraling economy following the renewal of American sanctions. Whether the resignation will stop the bleeding of President Hassan Rouhani’s administration remains to be seen, but Barel predicts Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will use the opportunity to appoint someone of his own choosing, ensuring greater influence in foreign policy matters moving forward. 5. He loves you, he loves you not: The brouhaha surrounding the entry of the long-tabooed party of Kahanists into the political arena appears to show no signs of letting up, with New Right co-leader Naftali Bennett telling Israel Radio that the Otzma Yehudit party is beyond the pale.“I do not accept their positions at all. People who see (Jewish supremacist Meir) Kahane as a model are not fit to sit in the Knesset.”But Bezalel Smotrich, whose Jewish Home party merged with Otzma Yehudit at the prime minister’s behest, is having none of Bennett’s criticism and tweets an article from earlier this month in which the New Right leader called the far-right alliance “essential.”When Bennett and Shaked left the Jewish Home, they argued that their new party would allow the right-wing bloc to expand, with them attracting more secular voters, leaving the national religious party more free to go after the hardline Orthodox Israelis supportive of Otzma Yehudit. 6. Enemies at both gates: Haaretz leads its front page with a report quoting senior Palestinian officials in the West Bank and Gaza who warn that a confrontation with the Jewish state will ensue if the Israeli government does not take steps to ease pressure on the Palestinian leadership.Senior Palestinian officials tell Haaretz’s Jacki Khoury that Israeli cuts in PA tax revenues in an effort to cease Ramallah’s payments to the families of security prisoners are turning the West Bank into a pressure cooker.“Nobody knows when the camel’s back will break but all the elements required for an explosion already exist, and (the Israelis) are constantly adding oil to the fire,” Kadura Fares says.A Hamas official tells Khoury that while the terror group is not interested in a confrontation with Israel at the moment — an evergreen line recycled by both Israelis and Palestinians — an Israeli strike on Gaza could lead to a dangerous renewal of violence. 7. Before, during and after: New allegations are made against alleged sexual predator Malka Leifer. The 51-year-old has made headlines as she faces extradition to Australia, where she is charged with 74 counts of sexual abuse. Earlier this year, a man in the Emmanuel settlement, where she lived after fleeing from Melbourne, accused Leifer of trying to molest his daughter. Now, two woman have come forward saying the former principal made inappropriate advances to them when she taught at Bnei Brak before moving to Australia.“She would take me for private conversation, one on one… down in the bomb shelter. We would sit there and she would stroke my leg,” the woman, who declined to disclose her identity, tells the Kan public broadcaster.ToI confirms that there is a second former student of Leifer’s from her time in Bnei Brak who has accused the former principal of having made inappropriate sexual advances to her nearly two decades ago.A former education official in Bnei Brak said she believed that rather than reporting her, community leaders sent Leifer to Australia after they learned of her transgressions. 8. So long, we hardly knew you?: The Central Elections Committee informs Labor’s shiny new ex-general Tal Russo that he may not be eligible to run, given a recent position he took on in the IDF reserves after his active duty was finished, which calls into question whether he completed his legally required post-army “cooling off” period before entering politics.Russo was tapped just last week by party chairman Avi Gabbay to serve as the party’s No. 2 as part of nearly every Israeli party’s effort to boast a high-ranking veteran fresh (but not too fresh) off the battlefield.Yedioth reports that Labor’s legal adviser told Gabbay that he need not worry, given that the “cooling off” law does not apply to reserve duty. While the Hebrew dailies would typically take such an opportunity to poke fun at the increasingly irrelevant Labor party, no cracks are made in the reports on Russo, indicating a possible degree of pity felt by the media toward the left-wing faction.Channel 12’s Amit Segal argues that the elections committee is adopting a “very narrow interpretation” of the cooling off law, adding that future military-to-politics candidates’ best hope that they don’t see it similarly interpreted against them with “such negligence.”

16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
