Hungary to open office with ‘diplomatic status’ in Jerusalem-At meetings with three of four Visegrad Group members, Netanyahu refuses to talk about Poland’s decision to boycott summit-By Raphael Ahren-TOI-21 February 2019
Hungary will open a trade office in Jerusalem that will have official “diplomatic status,” the country’s prime minister announced Tuesday during a short visit to Israel.“I just informed the prime minister that the Hungarian government decided that we will open up a trade representation here, which will have a diplomatic status, so we will appear now in Jerusalem officially as well,” Prime Minister Viktor Orban said, standing next to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the two leaders held a bilateral meeting in the capital’s King David Hotel.“So I hope it will be a good step forward to even improve further the relationship between the Israeli people and Hungary,” he said speaking in English, as the planned translation from Hungarian into Hebrew failed.Netanyahu thanked Orban for “deciding to extend the embassy of Hungary in Israel to Jerusalem, that is to have an extension in Jerusalem that deals with trade.”“This is important,” the Israeli leader went on. “It’s a sign of our friendship. And it’s also a place in Jerusalem that can welcome you next time you come here.”In an earlier meeting with Netanyahu, Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini also announced the opening of cultural and trade office in Jerusalem, though it was not immediately clear if it would have any diplomatic status. But Orban and Pellegrini both stopped short of recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Currently, only the US and Guatemala have their Israel embassies in Jerusalem.Orban has been criticized for promoting anti-Semitic stereotypes in his country, including through his campaign against the Hungarian-born Jewish billionaire George Soros. He has also been chastised for his efforts to rehabilitate the reputation of Hungarian wartime leader Miklos Horthy, who deported hundreds of thousands of Jews to their deaths. In his remarks Tuesday, he vowed support for Hungary’s Jewish community and spoke out against anti-Semitism in Europe. He also said that he wants to work toward outlawing European Union funding from supporting non-governmental organizations that interfere “in political issues, and [are] being anti-Israel.”“We don’t accept that kind of behavior and that kind of practice. Until now, we have it, so we would like to stop it,” he said.Netanyahu praised the Hungarian prime minister for his support. “You stand up for Israel and you stand up for the truth. It’s a very important alliance,” he said.Orban came to Israel this week to attend a summit of the so-called Visegrad Group, or V4, a consortium of four Central European countries. Poland on Monday pulled out of the summit citing an ongoing diplomatic spat over the country’s role in the Holocaust and Acting Foreign Minister Israel Katz saying that Poles “imbibe anti-Semitism with their mothers’ milk.”But Orban and the leaders of Slovakia and the Czech Republic still arrived in Jerusalem, holding brief individual bilateral meetings with Netanyahu, as well as one joint meeting.Seen on the lapel of an Israeli diplomat at the V4-1 summit in Jerusalem pic.twitter.com/1wHJTpUbFl— Raphael Ahren (@RaphaelAhren) February 19, 2019-At the beginning of his remarks, Orban briefly touched upon the subject, saying that the attempt to have a V4 summit in Israel was “almost successful.”The meeting would have been the first time the group convened outside Europe.“It was a first attempt, which is promising. I hope we will be able to complete that mission later on,” he said. After he concluded his remarks, Orban was asked by a reporter if he is disappointed that Poland decided to cancel its participation, thus canceling the summit. “It’s always better with them than without them, of course,” he replied.“We have a good friendship with Poland … and we have a good friendship with Israel, and when two friends having a discussion with each other, the only hope you can have is that they will talk directly with each other and improve the situation,” he went on. “That is my hope also.”Czech PM Andrej Babis, who met Netanyahu earlier on Tuesday, made a similar comment in response to a Times of Israel question about Jerusalem’s spat with Warsaw.“I am sure that Poland and Israel will continue cooperation and will solve this problem soon,” he said.Netanyahu ignored reporters’ questions about the crisis with Poland, which seeks an Israeli apology for Katz’s remarks.Pellegrini, the Slovak leader, after his meeting with Netanyahu Tuesday announced the opening of a “new cultural, information and innovation center” in Jerusalem, which he said would open “very soon.”“Because we also made the decision that Slovakia will have for the first time in our history only four diplomats responsible for innovation and one of these will be exactly in Jerusalem at this new center,” he said.Netanyahu said he was “absolutely delighted” with the decision to open a new center in Jerusalem. “It is my hope that this will be the first step towards opening a Slovak embassy in Jerusalem.”The Czech Republic in November ceremoniously opened the so-called Czech House in Jerusalem, which houses companies such as CzechInvest, CzechTrade, CzechTourism, Czech Center in a small office space in the capital’s Cinematheque. As opposed to the planned Hungarian trade mission, the Czech House does not have any diplomatic status, officials insisted at the time.
Teen in Lincoln Memorial protest sues Washington Post for $250 million-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Keith Coffman-February 21, 2019
(Reuters) - A high school student from Covington, Kentucky, sued the Washington Post for defamation on Tuesday, claiming the newspaper falsely accused him of racist acts and instigating a confrontation with a Native American activist in a January videotaped incident at the Lincoln Memorial. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Kentucky by Covington Catholic High School student Nicholas Sandmann, 16, seeks $250 million in damages, the amount that Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon.com and the world's richest person, paid for the Post in 2013.The lawsuit claims that the newspaper "wrongfully targeted and bullied" the teen to advance its bias against President Donald Trump because Sandmann is a white Catholic who wore a Make America Great Again souvenir cap on a school field trip to the March for Life anti-abortion rally in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 18.The Washington Post's Vice President for Communications Kristine Coratti Kelly said: "We are reviewing a copy of the lawsuit and we plan to mount a vigorous defense."In a photo that went viral from the incident, Sandmann is seen standing face to face with Native American activist Nathan Phillips. Sandmann stares smiling at him while Phillips sings and plays his drum. The incident sparked outrage on social media.FIRST OF MANY-In a statement, Sandmann's Atlanta-based lawyer, Lin Wood, said additional similar lawsuits would be filed in the weeks ahead.A private investigation firm retained by Covington Diocese in Park Hills, Kentucky, found in a report released last week no evidence the teenagers provoked a confrontation. The students were met at the Lincoln Memorial by offensive statements from members of the Black Hebrew Israelites, the report said. The investigation also determined that the students did not direct any racist or offensive comments toward Phillips although several performed a "tomahawk chop" to the beat of his drum.Phillips claimed in a separate video that he heard the students chanting "build that wall," during the encounter, a reference to Trump's pledge to build a barrier along the U.S. border with Mexico. The investigators said they found no evidence of such a chant and that Phillips did not respond to multiple attempts to contact him.(Reporting by Keith Coffman in DenverWriting by Dan Whitcomb in Los Angeles; editing by Bill Tarrant, Bill Berkrot and Cynthia Osterman)
Trump confident he will prevail against lawsuits over emergency declaration-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Jeff Mason-February 21, 2019
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump expressed confidence on Tuesday that he would prevail against a lawsuit filed by 16 U.S. states seeking to block his declaration of a national emergency to fund a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico. The group of states, including California and New York, has charged the president and top officials in his administration with taking away taxpayer funds for their communities to fulfill a promise from his 2016 campaign to curb illegal immigration and the flow of drugs.Trump's remarks to reporters in the Oval Office suggested he was not concerned or surprised by the states' legal challenge."I think, in the end, we're going to be very successful with the lawsuit," Trump said. "It's an open-and-closed case."The American Civil Liberties Union on Tuesday filed its own lawsuit in a U.S. District Court in California, alleging that "Trump disregarded the will of Congress with his emergency declaration."Legal experts have said challenges to Trump's emergency declaration, which critics have called unconstitutional, face an uphill and probably losing battle in a showdown likely to be decided by the conservative-majority U.S. Supreme Court.Trump declared the national emergency under a 1976 law after Congress declined to give him the $5.7 billion he wanted to build parts of the barrier this year. The president's demand for wall funding triggered a historic 35-day government shutdown that ended in January. Democrats and Republicans later agreed on a deal to avoid another shutdown with $1.4 billion allocated toward border fencing. Trump agreed to sign that and then declared a national emergency, redirecting an additional $6.7 billion beyond what lawmakers authorized for the project.California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Virginia and Michigan joined forces for the lawsuit. The states said Trump's order would cause them to lose millions of dollars in federal funding for National Guard units dealing with counter-drug activities and that redirection of funds from authorized military construction projects would damage their economies.Texas landowners and an environmental group also filed suit against the move.Trump predicted the legal challenges when he made the announcement in the White House Rose Garden last week, and he defended his right to make the declaration on Tuesday."We need strong borders. We have to stop drugs and crime and criminals and human trafficking. And we have to stop all of those things that a strong wall will stop," he said.House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the country's top Democrat, has called a wall immoral. The issue is likely to be a flashpoint in the 2020 presidential campaign, just as it was when Trump, a Republican, ran for president in 2016.The ACLU suit, filed on behalf of the Sierra Club and the Southern Border Communities Coalition, said that in addition to diverting taxpayer money from other federal projects, Trump's barrier would affect "ecologically sensitive habitats" and disturb wilderness areas along the border.(Reporting by Jeff Mason; Editing by Peter Cooney)

White House pushed Saudi nuclear power plan, report says-Democratic-led House committee to probe whether senior officials sought to sidestep national security procedures to advance proposal to build reactors in desert kingdom-By CHAD DAY-TOI-21 February 2019
WASHINGTON (AP) — Senior White House officials pushed a project to share nuclear power technology with Saudi Arabia despite the objections of ethics and national security officials, according to a new congressional report citing whistleblowers within the administration.Lawmakers from both parties have expressed concerns that Saudi Arabia could develop nuclear weapons if the US technology were transferred without proper safeguards. The Democratic-led House oversight committee opened an investigation Tuesday into the claims by several unnamed whistleblowers who said they witnessed “abnormal acts” in the White House regarding the proposal to build dozens of nuclear reactors across the Middle Eastern kingdom. The report raises concerns about whether some in a White House marked by “chaos, dysfunction, and backbiting” sought to circumvent established national security procedures regarding nuclear power technology. It also comes as Trump son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner is developing a Middle East peace plan that could include economic proposals for Saudi Arabia. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.According to the report, the effort was pushed by former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who was fired in early 2017. Derek Harvey, a National Security Council official brought in by Flynn, continued work on the proposal, which has remained under consideration by the Trump administration.Representative Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, announced the investigation Tuesday.Relying on the whistleblower accounts and email communications, the committee’s report details how NSC and ethics officials repeatedly warned that the actions of Flynn and one of his senior aides could run afoul of federal conflicts of interest law and statutes governing the transfer of nuclear technology to foreign powers. The probe puts new scrutiny on Flynn’s early days in the administration as he awaits sentencing for lying to the FBI in the Russia investigation. Congressional investigators are also probing the role of Tom Barrack, a proponent of the nuclear proposal who ran Trump’s presidential inaugural committee, which is separately under investigation by federal prosecutors in New York. Rick Gates, a former Barrack employee and cooperator in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, was also involved in advocating for the nuclear proposal. An attorney for Flynn declined to comment. Harvey and representatives for Barrack did not immediately return requests for comment.According to the report, the whistleblowers came forward to the committee because they had concerns “about efforts inside the White House to rush the transfer of highly sensitive US nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia in potential violation of the Atomic Energy Act and without review by Congress as required by law — efforts that may be ongoing to this day.”The report tracks closely with public reporting, including a 2017 article by the nonprofit news outlet ProPublica, which detailed some of the concerns raised inside the National Security Council about the nuclear proposal — known as the “Marshall Plan for the Middle East — advocated by a company called IP3 International.IP3 is led by a group of retired US military officers and national security officials, including retired Rear Adm. Michael Hewitt, retired Army Gen. Jack Keane and former Reagan national security adviser Bud McFarlane. IP3 and other proponents of nuclear power in the Middle East argue that the US needs to be involved because otherwise it will lose out to Russia, China and others on billions of dollars in business. They also say that the US involvement — and the limits on nuclear fuel that come with it— are essential to stem an arms race in the region.IP3 did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Up until the month before he joined the Trump administration, Flynn listed himself as a consultant to a previous iteration of Hewitt’s company advocating a similar nuclear power proposal, though the company told The Washington Post that Flynn was offered a role as an adviser but never formally came aboard.Still, according to the report, Flynn served as a conduit for IP3 inside the White House.Just days after Trump’s inauguration, the company sent Flynn a draft memo for the president’s signature that would have appointed Barrack as a “special representative” in charge of carrying out the nuclear power proposal and called on the director of the CIA and the secretaries of State, Energy, Treasury and Defense to lend him support. The report also quotes former deputy national security adviser K.T. McFarland as saying Trump personally told Barrack he could lead the plan’s implementation. The report also catalogs the actions of Harvey, the Flynn confidant who was put in charge of the NSC’s Middle East and North African affairs.According to the report, upon entering the White House in January 2017, Harvey saw his mission as getting Trump to adopt the nuclear proposal despite the objections of ethics and national security officials. Even when H.R. McMaster, who replaced Flynn as national security adviser, and NSC lawyer John Eisenberg directed for work to stop on the proposal because of concerns about its legality, Harvey ignored them and continued pursuing the proposal, according to the report.Harvey was fired from the NSC in July 2017. He then joined the staff of Representative Devin Nunes of California, a Trump ally and the former Republican chairman of the House intelligence committee.
UK expands no-fly zone for drones around airports-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-February 21, 2019
LONDON (AP) — The no-fly zone for drones around British airports is being extended to 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) in an attempt to avert disruptions like the December groundings of flights at Gatwick Airport, officials said Wednesday. The Department for Transport said the zone will widen on March 13 from the current 1 kilometer (0.6 miles).Officials are also working on new legislation to give police more powers to stop and search people suspected of using drones maliciously.Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said people who fly drones near airports "are not only acting irresponsibly, but criminally, and could face imprisonment."More than 100,000 travelers were stranded or delayed before Christmas after drone sightings near Gatwick, which is Britain's second-busiest airport.U.K. aviation authorities say 125 near-misses between drones and aircraft were reported in 2018, up from 93 in 2017.

Assad adviser rejects idea of granting Syrian Kurds autonomy-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Andrew Osborn-February 21, 2019
MOSCOW (Reuters) - A senior adviser to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesday flatly rejected the idea of giving Syrian Kurds a measure of autonomy, saying such a move would open the door to the partition of the country. The Kurdish-led authority that runs much of north and east Syria has presented a road map for a deal with Assad in recent meetings with his key ally Russia. The Kurds want to safeguard their autonomous region inside a decentralised state when U.S. troops currently backing them pull out. They also hope a deal with Damascus would dissuade neighboring Turkey from attacking them. But when asked on Tuesday if Damascus was willing to do a deal that would hand the Kurds some measure of autonomy, Bouthaina Shaaban, a senior adviser to Assad, flatly rejected the suggestion."Autonomy means the partition of Syria. We have no way to partition Syria," she told Reuters on the sidelines of a Middle East conference in Moscow organized by the Valdai Discussion Club."Syria is a country that is a melting pot for all people and all people are equal in front of Syrian law and in front of the Syrian constitution," she added, calling the Kurds "a precious and very important part of the Syrian people".Her comments come after Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad expressed optimism last month over dialogue with Kurdish groups, and suggest the Kurds will face an uphill struggle to wring concessions from Damascus, which has said it wants to retake every inch of territory lost during eight years of war.Shaaban sat next to Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister at the conference and lavishly praised Moscow for its Syria intervention, saying it had shown "amazing consistency in dealing with facts on the ground".She was scathing about Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and his idea of carving out "a safe zone" in northeast Syria however.Ankara wants the area near the Turkish border to be cleared of the U.S.-backed Kurdish YPG militia and to move into territory there, some of which is currently controlled by U.S. forces.Shaaban said the idea smacked of an illegal land grab."Turkey has all the new ambition to occupy other people's land and I think we are facing Erdogan who has dreams of reinvigorating and recreating the Ottoman Empire," she said."But I don't think he will be able to do that because our people are there to defend our land."Turkey backs the anti-Assad opposition that still has a foothold in northwestern Syria, and has troops in that area.(Editing by Frances Kerry)
Pakistani PM willing to talk but warns India not to attack-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-MUNIR AHMED-February 21, 2019
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan's prime minister offered to hold talks with India, even as he warned New Delhi to refrain from launching any attacks on his country following last week's suicide bombing in Indian-controlled Kashmir.Imran Khan said he hoped "better sense" would prevail after the attack on a paramilitary convoy that killed at least 40 Indian troops. But he warned in a televised speech Tuesday that if India attacks, "Pakistan will not merely think of retaliation, but rather, we will retaliate."U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged both sides "to exercise maximum restraint and take immediate steps to de-escalate tensions," U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.He said the U.N. chief's "good offices are available if accepted by both sides."Since independence from Britain in 1947, Pakistan and India have fought two of their three wars over Kashmir, which is divided between the two countries but claimed by each in its entirety. The U.N. Security Council in 1948 called for a plebiscite "as soon as possible" on the future of the Himalayan territory but it has never been held. A U.N. peacekeeping mission has been in the region since 1949.The bombing last Thursday in which a militant rammed an explosive-laden van into a paramilitary bus was the worst attack against Indian government forces in the history of Kashmir, where rebels have been fighting Indian rule since 1989.India has blamed Pakistan and threatened a "jaw-breaking response." Islamabad condemned the attack and cautioned India against linking Pakistan to the bombing without an investigation."If you have any actionable evidence, share it with us and we will take action," Khan said. "We are ready to cooperate with India in the investigations.""I hope better sense will prevail," he added. His remarks were in response to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement that his security forces have been given "total freedom" to deal with the militants in Kashmir.Hours later, India's External Affairs Ministry said in a statement it was surprised that Khan "refuses to acknowledge the attack on our security forces in Pulwama as an act of terrorism" and that the Pakistani premier "has neither chosen to condemn this heinous act, nor condoled with the bereaved families."It said Khan ignored claims of responsibility made by Jaish-e-Mohammad, as well as by the assailant who perpetrated the crime."It is a well-known fact that Jaish-e-Mohammad and its leader Masood Azhar are based in Pakistan. These should be sufficient proof for Pakistan to take action," it said.It said Khan sought evidence from New Delhi, which was "a lame excuse" as India had given evidence to Islamabad following the Mumbai attacks in 2008 and "despite this, the case has not progressed for the last more than 10 years.""Pakistan claims to be the greatest victim of terrorism. This is far from the truth. The international community is well acquainted with the reality that Pakistan is the nerve center of terrorism," it said.Azhar was released from custody in India in 1999, in exchange for more than 150 hostages from a hijacked Indian Airlines flight.India and Pakistan have both recalled their ambassadors since the attack, and Pakistan called on the U.N. to help defuse tensions.Pakistan's Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi sent a letter to Secretary-General Guterres saying that "for domestic political reasons, India has deliberately ratcheted up its hostile rhetoric against Pakistan and created a tense environment."Pakistan's U.N. Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi met later with Guterres at U.N. headquarters in New York and said she told him "we are on the cusp of a very dangerous situation in South Asia."Noting India's threats "to teach Pakistan a lesson," she said she stressed to Guterres that "we don't want to go down this path.""We would like to see a dialogue resume between Pakistan and India," Lodhi told AP. "We are ready to talk on terrorism, on Kashmir — all the issues which are outstanding between the two countries."She said Guterres reminded her that he previously offered "his good offices," but India didn't accept.Lodhi said she also met with the Security Council president and asked him to informally brief members about the emerging situation."We're here to warn the international community that something much more dangerous can happen, and it's important for at least the U.N. and the rest of the international community to step in and prevent further escalation," she said. The Ministry of External Affairs said it had no comment on Pakistan's letter to the U.N.A senior Indian military official in Kashmir, Lt. Gen. K.J.S. Dhillon, on Tuesday told reporters that Indian forces killed the chief of the Jaish-e-Mohammed militant group behind the suicide bombing and a gunbattle Monday in Kashmir. Four Indian soldiers, three suspected militants, a police official and a civilian were killed in the clash. The leader was a Pakistani national by the name of Kamran, Dhillon said.Jaish-e-Mohammed is outlawed in Pakistan but thought to operate from safe havens there.Pakistan did not immediately comment on Dhillon's remarks.___Associated Press writers Ashok Sharma in New Delhi, Aijaz Hussain in Srinagar, India, and Edith M. US weighing options on American IS sympathizer in Syria-[AFP]-YAHOONEWS-February 21, 2019
Washington (AFP) - The United States said Tuesday it wanted to ensure foreign jihadists remain off the battlefield as it weighed options on an American detained in Syria who says she wants to return home. The United States has urged European powers to take back hundreds of their citizens who fought with the Islamic State movement in Syria, but acknowledged the situation was complex in the rare case of an American jihadist.Hoda Muthana, a 24-year-old from Alabama who became a prominent online agitator for the extremists, said in an interview published Sunday with The Guardian that she had been brainwashed online and "deeply regrets" joining the movement. While declining to discuss Muthana's case specifically, State Department deputy spokesman Robert Palladino said that the status of US citizens detained in Syria "is by definition extremely complicated.""We're looking into these cases to better understand the details," he told reporters.Palladino said that the United States generally did not see a different solution between what to do with US fighters and with foreigners, saying the fighters pose "a global threat.""Repatriating these foreign terrorist fighters to their countries of origin, ensuring that they are prosecuted and detained -- that's the best solution, preventing them from returning to the battlefield," he said. The situation of foreign jihadists detained by US-allied Kurdish forces has taken a new urgency as President Donald Trump plans to withdraw US troops from Syria. The Syrian Democratic Forces say they may have to refocus on fighting Turkey, which has vowed to crush Kurdish fighters it links to separatists at home.Trump has contemplated reopening the US military base at Guantanamo Bay to take in new foreign inmates, while Britain on Tuesday revoked the citizenship of a female jihadist who wanted to return home with her newborn baby.Neither option would likely pass muster in the cases of US citizens, who enjoy strong legal protections under the Constitution.Muthana, who was married three times to jihadists and has a son with one of her husbands, fled her family in 2014 to join the Islamic State group in Syria, where she took to Twitter to urge attacks on fellow Americans. In the interview with The Guardian, Muthana said that she was "really young and ignorant" when she joined IS and has since renounced radicalism."I believe that America gives second chances. I want to return and I'll never come back to the Middle East," she told the newspaper.Hassan Shilby, a lawyer for Muthana, told ABC television's "Good Morning America" that the young woman had been "brainwashed and manipulated" and is "absolutely disgusted" by the person she became.
US ambassador says Hezbollah endangering the rest of Lebanon-In meeting with PM Hariri, Beirut envoy Elizabeth Richard voices concern over Iran-backed terror group’s inclusion in new government-By Agencies-TOI-21 February 2019
BEIRUT, Lebanon — The US ambassador to Lebanon expressed concerns Tuesday over the Hezbollah terror group’s growing role in the new Cabinet, saying it does not contribute to stability.Hezbollah, which also takes part in elections, has named a health minister and two other posts in Lebanon’s Cabinet. US officials have called on Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s new government to ensure the group does not receive support from public resources. At a meeting with Hariri on Tuesday, Ambassador Elizabeth Richard said the Iran-backed Hezbollah continues to violate Lebanon’s policy of non-involvement in regional conflicts by fighting in “at least three countries.” She was apparently referring to Syria, where the group fights alongside the government, and Iraq and Yemen, where Iran supports local armed groups.“I was also very frank with the prime minister about US concern over the growing role in the Cabinet of an organization that continues to maintain a militia that is not under the control of the government,” Richard told reporters after the meeting. She added that Hezbollah continues to make its own “national security decisions” that “endanger the rest of the country.”The US views Hezbollah as a terrorist group, but is a strong supporter of Lebanon’s national army, supplying it with arms worth hundreds of millions of dollars in recent years. Last week, the American Embassy said the US had delivered laser-guided rockets valued at more than $16 million to the Lebanese army.Richard said last year alone, the United States provided more than $825 million in assistance, an increase from the year before. She said the US has also supported education and development programs to help Lebanese communities “deal with the unprecedented demands placed on them when their Syrian neighbors fled.”Lebanon is home to about a million Syrian refugees — a quarter of the tiny Mediterranean country’s population — putting pressure on its crumbling infrastructure.Minister of State for Refugee Affairs Saleh Gharib briefed President Michel Aoun and Hariri on Tuesday about his visit to Syria the previous day, telling reporters that Syrian officials “were very positive and showed interest in facilitating” refugees’ return.
For first time in months, Gaza balloons spark fire in south-Small blazes burn grasslands in Eshkol region forest before firefighters extinguish them; Palestinians riot along Strip’s northern border-By Judah Ari Gross-TOI-21 February 2019
A balloon carrying an incendiary device from the Gaza Strip sparked at least one fire in southern Israel on Tuesday, the first such arson case in several months, authorities said. The blaze burned grasslands in a wooded area outside the community of Kibbutz Kissufim in the Eshkol region. It was quickly extinguished, according to the Israel Fire and Rescue Services.Initially, the Eshkol Regional Council said the cause of the fire was not immediately known, but it was later confirmed to have been sparked by arson devices from Gaza, a fire department spokesperson said.A second blaze that was sparked in the Eshkol region around the same time was found to have been an intentional controlled burn, and not the result of a Palestinian incendiary device, according to the fire department. In addition, a helium-filled condom with a suspected explosive device attached to it was found outside another community in the Eshkol region. In response to the fire, Eshkol Mayor Gadi Yarkoni called on Israelis to question political candidates about how they planned to combat these airborne arson attacks.“Currently candidates for the Knesset are making statements, tweeting, attending parlor meetings and conferences, and asking for your votes, I call on voters, all citizens of the State of Israel: Ask them — what are your proposals for Gaza and against the terror of balloons?” Yarkoni said in a statement. The balloon attacks came as dozens of Palestinians took part in riots along the northern border of the Gaza Strip, across from the community of Kibbutz Zikim, the army said.Demonstrators burned tires, threw rocks at soldiers and attacked the security fence. In one case, rioters attempted to throw an explosive device across the border, but it failed to clear the fence and landed inside Gaza, the military said.Israeli troops responded with tear gas and, in some cases, live fire.According to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry, 20 people were injured in the clashes with Israeli troops. The border riot across from Zikim was the latest to be held as part of a weekly series of protests against the Israeli-Egyptian naval blockade of the Gaza Strip. On Monday night, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip also rioted along the border with Israel, throwing dozens of explosive devices at the security fence and apparently sparking false reports of a mortar attack. At least seven Palestinians were injured by Israeli gunfire, to varying degrees, in the clashes, according to the Strip’s Hamas-run health ministry.Dozens of rioters — members of so-called “confusion units” — took part in the clashes, east of Gaza City, burning tires, setting off dozens of explosive devices, shining lasers at Israeli soldiers across the border to blind them, and attempting to breach the security fence.During the clashes, around 9 p.m., the Sha’ar Hanegev Regional Council, across from Gaza City, reported that a mortar shell had been fired from the Strip, hitting an empty field.Minutes later, the local government retracted the claim, and the Israel Defense Forces confirmed that no projectile had been fired.“Despite the reports, no projectile was launched from the [Gaza] Strip at Israeli territory,” the IDF said. The Palestinian “confusion units” returned to the Gaza border earlier this month after several months of refraining from evening riots, leading nightly clashes with Israeli troops focused on disorientation, alongside fires, explosives, lasers and infiltration attempts.Monday’s nighttime clashes came a day after an IDF soldier was moderately injured in clashes along the northern Gaza border and two days after an attack lightly wounded a Border Police officer, the army said. The IDF believes Hamas or the Iran-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the second-largest terror group in Gaza, could attempt to draw Israel into a war by conducting an attack along the border — an anti-tank missile strike, an ambush from an as-yet-undiscovered tunnel, or a similar low-level but significant attack. In light of this view, IDF chief Lt. Gen. Aviv Kohavi, whose tenure began last month, called for the military to update operational plans for fighting in the Gaza Strip.Since last March, the Gaza border has seen large-scale weekly clashes on Fridays, smaller protests along the northern Gaza border on Tuesdays, and periodic flareups between the Israeli military and Palestinian terror organizations. For the past several months, Egypt, UN special coordinator to the Middle East peace process Nikolay Mladenov and Qatar have worked to try to restore calm in Gaza and prevent flareups between Israel and terror groups in the Strip.Israel has demanded an end to the violent demonstrations along the border in any ceasefire agreement.Earlier this month, Israel announced that it had begun the final phase of construction of a 20-foot (some 6 meters) high galvanized steel fence that will completely surround the Strip. The barrier will extend 65 kilometers (40 miles) miles around the enclave and sit atop the subterranean concrete wall that Israel is constructing around Gaza to block terrorist groups’ attack tunnels.Adam Rasgon, Times of Israel staff, and AFP contributed to this report.
After blaming Israel, Iran says Pakistani carried out suicide attack on troops-Tehran first accused the Jewish state and the Gulf of being behind blast that killed 27 elite soldiers before pointing to armed Sunni group from neighboring Pakistan-By Agencies-TOI-21 February 2019
The suicide bomber that carried out last week’s attack that killed 27 members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards was a Pakistan national, the force’s Sepah news agency reported on Tuesday.“The suicide bomber was named Hafez Mohammad-Ali and was from Pakistan,” Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the Guards’ ground forces, was quoted as saying on the sidelines of a commemoration service in Tehran.Iran had initially accused Israel, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates of being behind the attack, but on Sunday it said the bomber was from neighboring Pakistan.Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned Pakistan’s ambassador on Sunday to protest the attack last Wednesday that also injured 12.Pakistan condemned the bombing and its foreign minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, spoke with his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, by phone on Sunday to assure him that Pakistan would fully cooperate in the investigation, according to two government officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, as they were not authorized to brief media. The militant Sunni group Jaish al-Adl, which claimed responsibility, is believed to operate from havens in neighboring Pakistan. On Friday, the head of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard, Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, claimed without providing evidence that the United States and Israel ordered Saudi Arabia and the Emirates to carry out the attack. On Saturday, Jafari switched gears and accused Pakistan’s security forces of supporting the militants and said Iran expects it to “punish” them.Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani meanwhile vowed “revenge for the blood of these martyrs,” in remarks broadcast on state TV over the weekend.“They cannot escape God’s and Iranian people’s vengeance,” Rouhani said.Pakistan is closely allied with Saudi Arabia but has tried to maintain a balancing act between Riyadh and Tehran. Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman began a visit to Pakistan Sunday after delaying his arrival by one day without providing an explanation.

Trump signs directive in step to create U.S. Space Force-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Mike Stone and Jeff Mason-February 21, 2019
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed a directive to start the lengthy process of creating a new branch of the military dedicated to handling threats in space, the U.S. Space Force.Space Policy Directive 4 sets the foundation for a legislative initiative to establish a new force under the aegis of the Air Force, the branch currently responsible for space, comparable to the Marines under the U.S. Navy. The Trump administration has said it plans to usher in the force by 2020. But the legislation will have to be approved by Congress, which could be an uphill battle with the House of Representatives now controlled by Democrats. In an Oval Office signing ceremony on Tuesday, the president called the Space Force a national security priority.Among other things, the force will be responsible for a range of space-based U.S. military capabilities, which include everything from satellites enabling the Global Positioning System (GPS) to sensors that help track missile launches. The force would have both "combat and combat support functions to enable prompt and sustained offensive and defensive space operations," the memo signed on Tuesday said.Mac Thornberry, the top-ranked Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, praised the initiative, saying in a statement on Tuesday that it "is an important next step towards real reform of national security space where we face real threats posed by Russia and China."He did not give details.Proponents of the Space Force have said it would make the Pentagon more efficient. But it has also faced criticism from some senior military officials and lawmakers. Democratic Senator Brian Schatz, who is on the Defense Appropriations subcommittee, last year called it a "dumb idea."U.S. Air Force chief General David Goldfein told the Brookings Institution think tank that the creation of the Space Force, the first new military branch since the Air Force was set up in 1947, was still a ways off and that "intricate details of how we move forward in establishing this service within the Department of the Air Force" were still being worked out."From a war-fighting perspective, the most important step that we take going forward, and the one that we need to do the quickest, is to establish a U.S. Space Command as a combatant commander," to command personnel and materials, he said.Patrick Shanahan, now acting secretary of defense and then-deputy secretary, said last year the force could have an initial budget of less than $5 billion. On Tuesday, a Pentagon official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said initial start-up costs were estimated at $72 million. The proposal will be submitted to Congress in "the coming weeks," chief Pentagon spokesperson Charles Summers said.(Reporting by Mike Stone and Jeff Mason; Editing by Tim Ahmann and Sonya Hepinstall)

7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
GOD PROMISED BY A RAINBOW-THE EARTH WOULD NEVER BE DESTROYED TOTALLY WITH A FLOOD AGAIN.BUT FLOODIING IS A SIGN OF JUDGEMENT.
FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS
REVELATION 8:7
7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.
