A senior Hamas official said on Tuesday that if Israel does not keep to the terms of a de facto ceasefire agreement it reached with the terror group, Palestinians will rush the Gaza Strip’s border with the Jewish state.Fathi Hamad, a member of Hamas’s politburo who is known for his heated rhetoric, made the statement at a protest in the northern border region between Israel and Gaza.“If the enemy does not return to its senses and does not implement the understandings, we will storm the border,” he said in a short speech, without elaborating on what he specifically wanted Israel to do. “Our patience has run out. Our patience has run out.”Since late March 2018, the Hamas terror group, Palestinian political parties, civil society groups and others have orchestrated weekly protests in the Gaza border region, which, they say, aim to force the Jewish state to lift its restrictions on the movement of people and goods into and out of the coastal enclave. Israel says it maintains the blockade to prevent Hamas, which is sworn to destroy the Jewish state, from importing weaponry.The protests have seen many violent acts, including the lobbing of firebombs, rocks and other objects at IDF soldiers and the sabotaging of the border fence.Israel and Hamas, however, reached a series of understandings last summer through intermediaries to provide Gaza with economic incentives in exchange for relative calm along the border. Palestinian worshipers clashed with Israeli police on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount on Tuesday, trying to force their way into an area of the flash-point holy compound that has been closed for years. Police said 19 Palestinians were arrested.The incident follows a similar confrontation on Monday in which Palestinians tried to break the gate that Israel placed on the closed area last week after the Muslim Waqf religious council broke into the area and held prayers there.Palestinian medics reported that several protesters were injured in the standoff.The Gate of Mercy, or Golden Gate, was sealed by Israeli authorities in 2003 because the group managing the area had ties to Hamas, and it has been kept closed to stop illegal construction work there by the Waqf, which Israeli officials believe has led to the destruction of antiquities from periods of Jewish presence in the area.Israeli police responded by summoning the head of the Waqf, Sheikh Azzam al-Khatib al-Tamimi, for questioning, but the summons was later canceled, apparently following pressure from Jordan, according to the Haaretz daily.The closure drew an angry rebuke from Amman, with a letter from the Jordanian foreign ministry to its Israeli counterpart calling the closure a violation of the status quo and demanding the reopening of the gates and the removal of all Israeli security forces.In an English-language statement on Tuesday, the office of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas accused Israel of attempting to impose a “division” of the mosque compound.According to Haaretz, the Jordanian government, which controls the Waqf, enlarged its council from 11 to 18 members last week. Seven children are dead following a fire early Tuesday that swept through the Halifax home of a Syrian refugee family, the deadliest house fire in recent Nova Scotia history.Halifax police confirmed the deaths at the house on Quartz Drive in the community of Spryfield.Ebraheim and Kawthar Barho arrived in Nova Scotia with their children in September 2017 and moved to Spryfield last summer, neighbours and friends said.The mosque the family attended identified the victims as: Abdullah, three months old , Rana, 2 , Hala, 3, Ola, 8, Mohamad, 9, Rola, 12, Ahmed, 14, Danielle Burt, who lives next door to the home and knows the family, said she heard a loud noise in the middle of the night. "I heard a huge bang, and I was laying in bed with my daughter, followed by a woman screaming, so I jumped up out of bed and looked out the back window and all I could see was flames shooting out from the back door going out onto their deck," she said.Burt said she grabbed her four children, ran outside and called 911."It happened all so fast. The house went up really quickly."She said the Barho children were good friends with her kids."They were just over at our house yesterday," said Burt. "It's just something out of a horror movie that you just never would wish on anybody."Family starting their lives in Canada-Imam Ibrahim Al-shanti presides over the Al-Barakah Masjid mosque, which the family attended. The mosque has posted details to their Facebook page about funeral arrangements and a GoFundMe campaign for the family.​"They are a very nice family with lovely kids, whom we've lost, it's sad enough," he said."They are starting their lives down here. The family affected by the fire was renting the home, CBC News has learned.It's the second fire in Nova Scotia that's claimed many lives in just over a year. In January 2018, four children died in a house fire in Pubnico Head in the southwest part of the province.Fire investigation could take months-Deputy Chief Dave Meldrum said the fire department received multiple calls beginning at 12:41 a.m.He said firefighters encountered heavy fire on the first and second floors of the home that made it difficult to fight. Multiple hoses were needed to battle the blaze.Meldrum said the investigation into the fire's cause could take days or even months.The roof was destroyed and the house is gutted. The sidings on houses on either side are charred from the flames."Anytime someone passes away in a fire, it's certainly a very tragic circumstance, and our thoughts really go out to the family at this time," said Halifax police Const. John MacLeod.Quartz Drive has been closed to pedestrians and vehicles. Police are asking people to avoid the area while emergency crews investigate.Halifax District Fire Chief Mike Blackburn said there's still a lot of work to be done in the investigation.He said a Critical Incident Stress Management Team has also been brought in to help first responders deal with what they've seen."They'll process this over time, but it's very, very difficult and it's not going to get any easier."Local MLA Brendan Maguire said people in the community have contacted him offering support for the family."It's devastating to think this is a family that came to potentially to Canada for a better life and — I mean as a father of three, you know I can't even imagine. I can't even imagine what they're going through right now."

HALIFAX — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was among the hundreds of people who gathered in Halifax's main square Wednesday night in support of a Syrian refugee family that lost seven children in a house fire, as pressure mounted to bring other members of the grieving family to Nova Scotia.The mourners gathered at Grand Parade in front of city hall and listened solemnly as the Barho children's names and ages were read out followed by a moment of silence.They were: Ahmad, 14; Rola, 12; Mohamad, 9; Ola, 8; Hala, 3; Rana, 2 and Abdullah, who was born in Canada in November.Natalie Horne, of the organization that sponsored the Barho family, spoke through tears as she described the personalities of the children.She noted they were all unique and individual."Ahmad, the oldest, was a jokester who had the best sense of humour, and like many 14-year-old boys, he loved girls," said Horne, evoking laughter from the crowd."Rola, who was 12, was a little mother to all of the children and she excelled academically and wanted so much to do well in school."Mohamad was an excellent athlete, Ola loved to dance, Hala had a big personality, Rana was sweet and Abdullah was adored by his mother, said Horne, who works with Hants East Assisting Refugee Team Society.Ali Duane, a member of Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency, urged all Canadians to pressure the federal government to bring grieving mother Kawthar Barho's family members to Nova Scotia."Speaking face to face with the mother, who is in a desperate situation, one of the things she has asked ... is that her family be here as soon as possible. ... There's nothing we can do to help. We are all strangers to her."The Barho family came to Nova Scotia in 2017 as sponsored refugees. The seven children died early Tuesday in a fire that swept through their suburban home.Imam Abdallah Yousri of the Ummah Mosque and Community Centre in Halifax said Wednesday that the father, Ebraheim Barho, remains in critical condition in hospital.As for his wife, Kawthar Barho, Yousri said she remains so distraught that she says little, aside from repeating the name of her youngest child Abdullah.Yousri said plans for a burial service remain on hold because the children's bodies have yet to be released by the medical examiner.A fundraising campaign launched to help the parents quickly surpassed its initial $300,000 goal.A GoFundMe page had collected more than $352,000 as of Wednesday evening, with its stated goal raised to $1 million. The effort is organized by family friends and the Imam Council of Halifax.The city's official community gathering came 24 hours after a more spontaneous gathering Tuesday night outside the charred remnants of the family's Quartz Drive house.Neighbours and others carried flowers and wept openly in the frigid darkness, looking for solace in the company of neighbours and listening to a Christian pastor attempt to gather community strength for the Syrian refugees beginning to make a new life in Canada.The fire struck not long after midnight on Tuesday morning. Friends, family, and members of the community are gathering at a candlelight vigil in Brampton for 11-year-old Riya Rajkumar, whose body was found at a home last Thursday following an Amber Alert. The girl's father, Roopesh Rajkumar, 41, faces a first-degree murder charge.Members of city council in Brampton, Ont., organized the vigil, being held at Garden Square in downtown Brampton from 5:45 to 7 p.m. ET Tuesday, and is open to all members of the public.The evening began with two songs of prayer dedicated to Riya as members of the crowd remained quiet.Poems, speeches, and songs were presented, as the sky darkened and light from hundreds of candles illuminated the area.After thanking the city for the event, acting Peel Police Chief Chris McCord read out a statement written by Riya's mother."Today, I wish to tell the story of my baby girl, my best friend, my everything," the statement reads."She touched a lot of lives with her laughter and contagious smile. It breaks my heart to know I will no longer be seeing that smile."Brampton city council also released a written statement about the vigil."Our community is grieving the tragic death of Riya Rajkumar, and this is a time to come together in solidarity, and remember and honour a young life," the statement reads.Father arrested around midnight Thursday-The girl's father was arrested at about midnight on Thursday, around the same time officers discovered her body in a basement apartment, one hour after she became the subject of an Amber Alert.Provincial police found him driving north on Highway 11 near Orillia, about 130 kilometres north of Brampton, in a silver Honda Civic.Police were initially called by the girl's mother after her father failed to return her home from her birthday celebrations on Thursday evening.Coun. Rowena Santos, who represents Wards 1 and 5, says Riya's death has had a huge impact."It's been incredibly heartbreaking as a mom myself and for many of the parents and families here in the city," Santos told CBC Toronto on Monday. "It's been incredibly tragic to hear the news of Riya being murdered in Brampton on her birthday. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for much of southern Ontario, including Toronto, saying that freezing rain is "threatening" for Wednesday night.According to the statement, snow is forecast to start Wednesday afternoon, but will "quickly change" to freezing rain Wednesday evening. The freezing rain or drizzle will change to "occasional rain or drizzle" by Thursday morning as the temperature rises above 0 C.The wild weather forecast is the result of a "large" low-pressure system "brewing" over the Southern Plains and moving toward the Great Lakes, the federal weather agency said."Untreated surfaces may become icy and slippery," the statement warned. "Travel may be affected."The warm-up will follow a deep freeze that has settled over southern Ontario. Early Tuesday morning, the temperature was -13 C, but felt more like -15 with the wind. On Monday, Toronto's medical officer of health issued a cold weather alert for the city. On Tuesday, her office said the alert would end at noon.But the warm temperatures appear set to stick around after Wednesday, with temperatures above 0 C forecast right through the weekend.
