LONDON — The UK believes British hostage John Cantlie, captured by the Islamic State over six years ago, is alive, British Security Minister Ben Wallace said Tuesday.Wallace did not say what intelligence supported the belief that the photojournalist, captured in northwestern Syria in November 2012, is still alive.He did say officials believe Cantlie is still being held by Islamic State operatives.Wallace also noted the British government’s policy is not to pay ransoms for hostages.A tweet on an account used by Cantlie’s family said: “We are aware of the current news circulating that John Cantlie is alive, whilst this is not substantiated at present, we continue to hope and pray that this turns out to be true.”Cantlie was captured first in July 2012 but escaped with help from the Free Syrian Army. They used 1,339 pulsating stars — young, newly catalogued stars bigger and brighter than our sun — to map the galaxy's shape.The farther from the center, the more warping, or twisting, there is in the Milky Way's outer hydrogen gas disc. Researchers say the pattern is likely caused by the spinning force of the massive inner disc of stars. One astronomer notes we usually think of spiral galaxies as being flat, like Andromeda.At least a dozen other galaxies appear to have warped edges in a similar spiral pattern.The study appears in the journal Nature Astronomy .

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazil's leading research institute Fiocruz warned Tuesday of a potential health crisis after a dam containing mining waste collapsed in the state of Minas Gerais, killing at least 134 people.Fiocruz said the contamination of the ecosystem and the nearby Paraopeba River could precipitate the spread of dengue, yellow fever or diarrhea in communities around Brumadinho, the city where the mining reservoir breached on Jan. 25.Tests of the contaminated mud and water from the river are underway, but environmental experts said they expect to find toxic concentrations of iron oxide and other heavy metals.Over the long term, the report stated that the isolation of rural communities, the stress and trauma caused by the loss of a family member, a job, or a drastic change in the quality of life also had a significant impact on people's health.Researchers noted a higher incidence of hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, strokes and even cancers in the months and years following the accidents.Fiocruz, linked to the Ministry of Health, largely based its assessments on studies carried out in the aftermath of a similar disaster in November 2015, in the same state of Minas Gerais. The collapse of the larger reservoir killed 19 people and left 250,000 people without drinking water.It had been considered Brazil's worst environmental disaster, but experts argued Tuesday that Brumadinho could surpass it."This is the biggest mining dam disaster in Brazil and one of the greatest in the world", said Mariano Andrade da Silva, a researcher at the National School of Public Health, linked to Fiocruz.In Brumadinho, the breach of the reservoir unleashed about 12 million cubic meters of reddish-brown mud, threatening to contaminate 48 municipalities, affecting up to 1.3 million residents.Authorities are still looking for 199 missing people, but no one has been found alive since Jan. 26.About 3,000 people live in rural areas, many of which are cut off from the center of Brumadinho because roads remain blocked by the mud. Fiocruz experts said past experiences indicated that remote communities are particularly vulnerable to the spread of diseases and worsening of health conditions.The institute is also monitoring the movement of the mud as it descends the Paraopeba River toward the much larger Sao Francisco River.Experts say they don't know yet if two hydroelectric power plants on the Paraoepeba will block the waste and prevent the contamination of the Sao Francisco River. Fiocruz said that millions of people in more than 500 municipalities depended on the water of the Sao Francisco for personal use or irrigation.The slow-moving, thick mud was initially expected to reach the first dam between Feb. 5 and Feb. 10.

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Against the backdrop of the first papal visit to the Arabian Peninsula is an interfaith conference that includes prominent US rabbis and Christian evangelicals, who are seeking stronger recognition of Israel through closer ties with Muslim figures and Arab leaders.These merged interests come as Arab leaders look to strengthen ties with the Trump administration through his evangelical base of supporters. It’s also happening as Gulf Arab states take their once-private outreach to Israel more publicly in the absence of peace talks between Palestinians and Israelis.Rabbi Marc Schneier, who founded The Hampton Synagogue in Westhampton Beach, New York, is at the forefront of building ties between Jews and Muslims in the US and the Middle East. Through greater interreligious dialogue, he’s pushed for closer relations between Muslim leaders and the state of Israel.“I think there is a very, very keen interest in bringing Islam and Judaism together, but our role as Jewish leaders — we also need to sensitize and educate and expose both Gulf leaders and Muslim interfaith leaders to the fact that Israel again is not a political dimension for the Jewish people; it’s at the very core of our religion,” he told The Associated Press in an interview on the sidelines of Pope Francis’ visit to the United Arab Emirates.Schneier has carved a foothold in the region to deliver that message. It’s Israelis and Zionists that we have a problem with.”“I no longer hear that rhetoric. Researchers say the pattern is likely caused by the spinning force of the massive inner disc of stars. One astronomer notes we usually think of spiral galaxies as being flat, like Andromeda.At least a dozen other galaxies appear to have warped edges in a similar spiral pattern.The study appears in the journal Nature Astronomy .

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Brazil's leading research institute Fiocruz warned Tuesday of a potential health crisis after a dam containing mining waste collapsed in the state of Minas Gerais, killing at least 134 people.Fiocruz said the contamination of the ecosystem and the nearby Paraopeba River could precipitate the spread of dengue, yellow fever or diarrhea in communities around Brumadinho, the city where the mining reservoir breached on Jan. 25.Tests of the contaminated mud and water from the river are underway, but environmental experts said they expect to find toxic concentrations of iron oxide and other heavy metals.Over the long term, the report stated that the isolation of rural communities, the stress and trauma caused by the loss of a family member, a job, or a drastic change in the quality of life also had a significant impact on people's health.Researchers noted a higher incidence of hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, strokes and even cancers in the months and years following the accidents.Fiocruz, linked to the Ministry of Health, largely based its assessments on studies carried out in the aftermath of a similar disaster in November 2015, in the same state of Minas Gerais. ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Against the backdrop of the first papal visit to the Arabian Peninsula is an interfaith conference that includes prominent US rabbis and Christian evangelicals, who are seeking stronger recognition of Israel through closer ties with Muslim figures and Arab leaders.These merged interests come as Arab leaders look to strengthen ties with the Trump administration through his evangelical base of supporters. It’s also happening as Gulf Arab states take their once-private outreach to Israel more publicly in the absence of peace talks between Palestinians and Israelis.Rabbi Marc Schneier, who founded The Hampton Synagogue in Westhampton Beach, New York, is at the forefront of building ties between Jews and Muslims in the US and the Middle East. Through greater interreligious dialogue, he’s pushed for closer relations between Muslim leaders and the state of Israel.“I think there is a very, very keen interest in bringing Islam and Judaism together, but our role as Jewish leaders — we also need to sensitize and educate and expose both Gulf leaders and Muslim interfaith leaders to the fact that Israel again is not a political dimension for the Jewish people; it’s at the very core of our religion,” he told The Associated Press in an interview on the sidelines of Pope Francis’ visit to the United Arab Emirates.Schneier has carved a foothold in the region to deliver that message. He also has links to Saudi Arabia’s interfaith center in Vienna and has been invited to Saudi Arabia to meet the crown prince.He even boasts that he has helped ensure kosher hot dogs will be available to soccer fans attending the World Cup in 2022 in Qatar.Over the weekend, he delivered a sermon to a congregation of expatriate Jews in an unmarked synagogue in Dubai — a move that not only underlined growing acceptance and recognition of Jewish life in Gulf Arab states but also of the warming of ties between these nations and Israel.“I remember when I first entered the fray here in the Gulf, there was a tendency to bifurcate Israel and Judaism, to break out Israel from Judaism,” Schneier said, explaining that he used to hear people in the region say: “We have nothing against Jews. It’s Israelis and Zionists that we have a problem with.”“I no longer hear that rhetoric. ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Pope Francis ministered on Tuesday to the thriving Catholic community in the United Arab Emirates as he concluded his historic visit to the Arabian Peninsula with the first-ever papal Mass here and a call for his flock to remain meek in following God.A day after making a broad appeal for Christian and Muslim leaders to work together to promote peace and reject war, Francis celebrated what some considered the largest show of public Christian worship on the peninsula, the birthplace of Islam.For the Gulf Arab region where public displays of non-Islamic faith are restricted, the hymns of “Hallelujah” booming out from speakers marked a milestone and evidence of the Emirates’ much touted assertions of its tolerance for other faiths.Cheers erupted inside and outside the Zayed Sports City Stadium as Francis arrived and looped through the crowd in his open-sided popemobile, as chants of “Viva il Papa” and “We love you!” echoed from the crowd, estimated to be around 135,000.Organizers said faithful from 100 countries would attend, as well as 4,000 Muslims from this Muslim federation — evidence of the enormous diversity among the 9 million people who live in the UAE.“We have to say it is really a big event for us which we never expected,” said Sumitha Pinto, an Indian native who has lived in the UAE for nearly 20 years. She attended the Mass with her husband and four sons, the youngest of whom held up a sign with the pope’s photo that read: “Welcome Pope Francis. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas urged European Union countries to recognize his nascent state Tuesday.Abbas made the remark at a joint press conference with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen at the PA presidential headquarters in Ramallah.“We hope the states of the European Union…will recognize the State of Palestine,” the PA president said in response to a reporter’s question.While several EU countries have recognized Palestine or passed measures, the majority of its members, including France, the UK, Germany, Spain and Italy, have not made such a move.Israel has long held that recognizing Palestine will harden the Palestinians’ negotiating positions, making it more difficult to reach a final peace agreement.Abbas has previously called on EU member states to recognize Palestine, contending it would encourage Palestinians to maintain hope for peace.During the press conference with Van der Bellen, Abbas also repeated a call for the US to partner in the “establishment of a multilateral mechanism” to mediate the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.Van der Bellen told Abbas he supports a two-state solution to the conflict, calling it the only way forward, according to the official Palestinian Wafa news outlet.Abbas has refused to recognize the US as a peace broker since December 2017, amid anger over Washington recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and has asked the international community to fill the role instead.While several European leaders have expressed support for the idea, there has been no concerted effort on the continent to kick-start talks.The Trump administration is expected to release a long-awaited peace plan sometime after the Israeli elections in April, though Ramallah has already rejected it.The last known round of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, which were sponsored by the US, collapsed in May 2014.

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Jason Greenblatt says he is still ready for face-to-face diplomacy after touting the virtual kind on Twitter.“We continue to meet ordinary Palestinians and are always available to meet their leadership,” US President Donald Trump’s top Middle East peace negotiator said Monday on Twitter after a Palestinian official, Hanan Ashrawi, mocked him for touting Twitter as a means for diplomatic engagement.Greenblatt said he would continue to use Twitter to take his case directly to the parties.“We also are dedicated to responding to misinformation spread by some of the Palestinian leadership and being clear about our policies,” he said.Palestinian officials have cut off Trump administration officials since December 2017, when Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Trump’s subsequent decision to cut virtually all funding to the Palestinians has entrenched the Palestinian refusal to engage.Greenblatt uses Twitter to explain the Trump administration’s policies, saying last week that the Palestinian Authority must end its subsidies for the families of Palestinians who have attacked Israelis.“Stop rewarding terrorists who kill Israelis,” Greenblatt said February 1, responding to complaints about the funding cutoff by PA spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh.In the same thread, Greenblatt said: “Who says the US and the PA aren’t talking?
