Israeli security forces overnight Friday arrested a West Bank man whose two brothers have been implicated in two recent terror attacks, Palestinian media reported.Mohammad Barghouti, 17, was detained by troops in Kobar, a village near Ramallah, according to local media.Israeli defense officials have said Mohammad’s brother Asem is suspected of carrying out a deadly terror attack on December 13 near the Givat Assaf outpost in the West Bank.Palestinian media said Israeli forces threatened family members that they could be deported to Jericho if they did not give up Asem within days.Another brother, Salih, was shot dead on December 12 in Kobar as he attacked Israeli security forces in an attempt to evade arrest. He was suspected of having carried out a terror attack near the Ofra settlement three days earlier, on December 9.Seven people were wounded in the drive-by shooting attack on a bus stop outside Ofra, including a 30-weeks pregnant woman who was seriously injured. An Iranian arbitration body gave its approval on Saturday to an anti-money laundering bill seen as crucial to maintaining international trade and banking ties, the official IRNA news agency reported.“The bill on amending the law to counter money laundering was approved with certain changes and will be sent to the parliament speaker to be communicated to the government,” Expediency Council member Gholamreza Mesbahi-Moghadam told IRNA.The Expediency Council settles disputes between parliament, which approved the bill last year, and the conservative-dominated Guardian Council, which vets all legislation and had rejected it.Conservatives have argued that new legislation on money laundering and terrorist financing will provide Western powers with leverage over Iran’s economy and how it funds regional allies such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah.But the government of President Hassan Rouhani says the laws are needed to meet demands set by by the international Financial Action Task Force (FATF), which monitors countries’ efforts to tackle financial crime.Iran is alone with North Korea on the FATF’s blacklist — although the Paris-based organization has suspended counter-measures since June 2017 while Iran works on reforms.The FATF will meet again in February to discuss Iran’s progress.The government is hoping to salvage banking and trade ties after the United States walked out of a landmark 2015 nuclear deal between major powers and Iran and reimposed crippling unilateral sanctions.The other parties to the deal — Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia — have sought to salvage the agreement and maintain trade with Iran, but have called on Tehran to meet FATF requirements.The anti-money laundering bill is one of four pieces of legislation put forward by the government to that end.A previous bill on the mechanics of monitoring and preventing terrorist financing was signed into law in August.Two others — allowing Iran to join UN conventions against terrorist-financing and organized crime — have been approved by parliament but are still being delayed by higher authorities, including the Guardian Council.The Expediency Council currently has 38 members, all appointed by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Potential buyers for Iran’s beleaguered oil industry have “significantly increased” in spite of renewed US sanctions targeting the nation’s chief export, Tehran’s oil minister said Saturday.“China, India, Japan, South Korea and other countries that were granted waivers from America to import Iranian oil are not willing to buy even one barrel more from Iran,” Amir Hossein Zamaninia told the SHANA news agency, in comments translated by Reuters.However, “Despite US pressures on [the] Iranian oil market, the number of potential buyers of Iranian oil has significantly increased due to a competitive market, greed and pursuit of more profit.”He did not give any further details.Other countries granted a 180-day waiver from the sanctions by Washington included Greece, Turkey, Italy and Taiwan.The report appeared to contradict a report by Reuters last week that India has handed Iran a tax break worth hundreds of millions of dollars to green-light an oil import deal hindered by the sanctions.In November, US President Donald Trump’s administration reinstated all of Washington’s sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal.The sanctions were the second batch that the Trump administration has reimposed on the Islamic Republic since it withdrew from the nuclear agreement last year.The rollback ended US participation in the Obama-era accord, which now hangs in the balance as Iran no longer enjoys the billions of dollars in sanctions relief it was granted under the deal in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program.Iran is already in the grip of an economic crisis. Israeli security forces overnight Friday arrested a West Bank man whose two brothers have been implicated in two recent terror attacks, Palestinian media reported.Mohammad Barghouti, 17, was detained by troops in Kobar, a village near Ramallah, according to local media.Israeli defense officials have said Mohammad’s brother Asem is suspected of carrying out a deadly terror attack on December 13 near the Givat Assaf outpost in the West Bank.Palestinian media said Israeli forces threatened family members that they could be deported to Jericho if they did not give up Asem within days.Another brother, Salih, was shot dead on December 12 in Kobar as he attacked Israeli security forces in an attempt to evade arrest. He was suspected of having carried out a terror attack near the Ofra settlement three days earlier, on December 9.Seven people were wounded in the drive-by shooting attack on a bus stop outside Ofra, including a 30-weeks pregnant woman who was seriously injured. Her baby was delivered in an emergency operation, but died days later.Salih’s participation in the Ofra attack was confirmed by the Hamas terror group.The day after Israeli forces shot and killed Salih Barghouti, two soldiers were killed in the shooting attack near Givat Assaf — Sgt. Yosef Cohen and Staff Sgt. Yovel Mor Yosef — and two people were wounded, a soldier and a civilian woman.The gunman immediately fled the scene of the attack toward Ramallah in a car with Israeli license plates and is still being sought.Asem was set free from an Israeli prison in April of last year after serving an 11-year sentence.A number of members of the Barghouti family have a history of involvement in terrorist activities.Meanwhile in the Gaza Strip Palestinian media reported that Palestinian fishing boats were fired upon by Israeli army forces in the south of the territory.There were also reports of Palestinian farmers east of Khan Younis, in the central Strip, coming under fire.An Israeli military spokesman said he was looking into the reports. There were no reports of casualties in either incident.The IDF often fires warning shots at Gaza boats that sail beyond permitted fishing zones. Israel maintains a naval blockade of the Gaza Strip, saying it is necessary to prevent terror groups from rearming and launching attacks.On Friday some 10,000 Palestinians took part in violent protests along the Gaza border, burning tires and hurling rocks and explosive devices at IDF soldiers.The army said it foiled two attempts to breach the border fence and responded to the demonstrators with tear gas and live fire in accordance with rules of engagement.Photos showed several youths trying to climb over the fence.The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said 15 protesters were injured by live fire in clashes with Israeli security forces along the border. It also said five medics were hurt, all hit by gas canisters.Friday’s protests were held at various locations along the border under the banner of Hamas’s ongoing “March of Return” demonstrations.Since March, Palestinians have been holding weekly “March of Return” protests on the border, which Israel has accused Gaza’s Hamas rulers of using to carry out attacks on troops and attempt to breach the security fence.
