Bolsonaro confirms Brazil to move embassy to Jerusalem-Brazilian leader says only Iran strongly opposed to step, most Arab nations not expected to sanction Brasilia-By Jordi Miro-TOI-6 January 2019

BRASILIA, Brazil (AFP) — Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro has confirmed he will move his country’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, and said the main nation objecting to that is Iran, not Arab countries.Bolsonaro, speaking in an interview to SBT television late Thursday, said: “The decision is taken, it’s only a matter of when it will be implemented.”The comment confirmed a statement by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was in Brazil this week to attend Bolsonaro’s January 1 investiture.Bolsonaro, a far-right former paratrooper intent on forging close ties with the US and Israel, signaled before taking office that he planned to follow President Donald Trump’s lead in moving Brazil’s embassy to Jerusalem. The decision is controversial because Israel claims all of Jerusalem as its capital while Palestinians view East Jerusalem as the capital of its future state. Many countries hold that Jerusalem’s status should only be defined through wider Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations. So far, only the United States and Guatemala have broken with that consensus by opening embassies in Jerusalem. Paraguay backtracked on a decision last year to move its embassy. Israel and the US have spoken with Honduras about its embassy going to Jerusalem.Bolsonaro had wavered on the embassy move after saying in early November he intended to go through with it.Days later he rowed back, saying “it is not yet decided,” apparently responding to fears of Brazil’s powerful farming businesses that an embassy move could put at risk $1 billion in meat exports to Arab markets.-Risk minimized-But in his SBT interview, Bolsonaro minimized that risk, saying: “A large part of the Arab world is aligned or aligning itself with the United States. The Palestinian issue is already overloading people in the Arab world for the most part.”He added that “the only weighty voice speaking out against me is Iran,” the Shiite Islamic republic that is an enemy to Israel and hostile to Arab allies of the US such as Saudi Arabia.Bolsonaro said he did not think that most Arab countries would take reprisals against Brazil. Some of the “more radical” Arab nations “might adopt some sort of sanction — I hope only economic ones — against us,” he said.Bolsonaro, 63, represents a sharp break with Brazil’s recent record of left of center policies, swerving his country sharply to the right and towards the United States.Sometimes called the “Trump of the tropics” for his blustery style and disdain of multilateral forums, he said in the same TV interview he was open to discussing the opening of a US military base in Brazil. He also said he was concerned about Russian backing of the Venezuelan “dictatorship” run by President Nicolas Maduro.

Netanyahu’s military secretary reprimanded for outpost removal confusion-Avi Blot receives official censure from IDF chief of staff for failing to convey government decision to call off eviction-By Judah Ari Gross-TOI-JAN 6,19

IDF chief Gadi Eisenkot on Friday reprimanded the military secretary to the prime minister for failing to convey the government’s decision to call off the eviction of an illegal West Bank outpost amid violent clashes on Thursday.Opposition lawmakers accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of attempting to divert blame for the removal of the illegally erected buildings from the Amona outpost by having his military secretary take responsibility for the issue.Netanyahu was also lambasted by right-wing lawmakers for the Amona eviction. Shortly after the criticisms began, anonymously sourced reports emerged in Israeli media outlets claiming that his military secretary, Brig. Gen. Avi Blot, had been instructed to call off the eviction but failed to relay the order in time.On Friday, the military said Eisenkot spoke with Blot about the allegations.“The chief of staff clarified to Brig. Gen. Blot that he was mistaken in how he handled the incident and was expected to behave more professionally. In light of this, [Eisenkot] decided to officially reprimand him,” the army said in a statement.“The officer was mistaken in that he did not bring the prime minister’s instruction in real time to the relevant figures in the IDF. The officer acknowledged his mistake,” the military said.Politicians from the left and the right accused Netanyahu of shoving Blot under the bus.“The shameful attempt by the prime minister to shift blame for the evacuation of Amona to his military secretary… is no less than despicable,” wrote former defense minister Avigdor Liberman, who heads the right-wing Yisrael Beytenu party, on Facebook.“One cannot see this but as a shirking of responsibility and desperate attempt to find a scapegoat,” he added.Liberman noted that Blot grew up in a settlement, studied at a pre-army academy in the West Bank and was the commander of the Judea Brigade stationed in the Hebron area, which he said “eliminate any possibility of blaming him for the failure” of the Amona evacuation.Liberman’s criticism of Netanyahu was echoed by Yair Lapid, leader of the centrist Yesh Atid party.“He is prime minister and defense minister and he ordered the evacuation of Amona,” Lapid wrote on Twitter about Netanyahu.“His effort to evade responsibility at the expense of the military secretary is typical Netanyahu, but it is shameless and even in his terms,” Lapid added.MK Tamar Zandberg, head of the left-wing Meretz party, said the prime minister was “terrified of hilltop youth militias and was willing to sacrifice his military secretary in order to appease them.”The reports that Blot was responsible for failing to stop the violent evacuation at Amona have been met with skepticism by settler leaders, who questioned whether Netanyahu had actually ordered the evacuation called off, or was attempting to temper criticism against him from the right. The evacuation Thursday morning saw dozens injured as far-right youth clashed with security forces who arrived early Thursday morning to carry out a Jerusalem District Court order to remove the caravans, installed on the site of a previously evacuated outpost. It was met by angry denunciations from the right and settler leaders, some of whom pointed fingers at Netanyahu. It was unclear why the military would not have been able to reverse course even if troops were on their way to the outpost. The reports, which were unsourced, also did not say why Netanyahu, who is also defense minister, had decided Wednesday night that the caravans did not need to be removed after all.According to Hadashot news, which first reported the story, Netanyahu had ordered Eisenkot to summon Blot over the apparent snafu.Late Wednesday night, some 300 settler youths converged on the pair of mobile homes illegally installed on the West Bank hilltop where the Amona outpost once stood.Border Police officers who carried out the evacuation said the settlers hurled stones, burned tires and thew iron bars at them. By the completion of the three-hour evacuation, 23 officers had been injured, primarily from stones hurled by the far-right activists. One officer was stabbed in the hand by a sharp object brandished by one of the teen protesters. Seven rioters were arrested and later released. For their part, the young demonstrators claimed the border cops used excessive force in clearing the hilltop. Footage from the evacuation shows one officer kneeing a non-resisting teen in the groin outside one of the mobile homes as well as the indiscriminate spraying of teargas on the demonstrators both inside and outside the caravans. In total, four teens were injured in the clashes, though Border Police said one of the boys was wounded after being hit by a stone thrown by one of his peers. All 27 of the injured were released from the hospital after having received treatment for minor injuries. The two mobile homes were installed overnight on December 14 by a number of settler leaders, who claimed that the land on which they were placed had been legally purchased from the original Palestinian landowners. However, they did not coordinate the installation with the state bodies and lacked the permits required to make such a move. The Haaretz daily reported Wednesday that there were considerable legal problems with the alleged purchase and that the settlers had not received permission from all of the owners of the various plots they claimed to have bought. The community was established in 1995 and demolished in February 2017 after the High Court of Justice ruled that the settlement had been built on private Palestinian land. Last March, its evacuees moved into Amichai, the first newly constructed West Bank settlement in over 25 years. The community is located just east of the Shiloh settlement in the central West Bank.Times of Israel staff Jacob Magid contributed to this report.

Palestinians try to breach border fence during Gaza protests, 15 wounded-Some 10,000 join weekly demonstration, burning tires and hurling rocks and explosive devices at IDF soldiers-By TOI staff-6 January 2019

Some 10,000 Palestinians took part in violent protests along the Gaza border on Friday, burning tires and hurling rocks and explosive devices at IDF soldiers. The army said it foiled two attempts to breach the border fence and was responding to the demonstrators with tear gas and live fire in accordance with rules of engagement.Photos showed several youths trying to climb over the fence. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said 15 protesters were injured by live fire in clashes with Israeli security forces along the border. It also said five medics were hurt, all hit by gas canisters. The ministry “condemns the Israeli occupation forces’ violations against medical personnel,” it said in a statement that cam days after a New York Times report into the killing of a female Palestinian medic in June. The report found that IDF troops likely fired into a group of protesters and medical personnel who posed no threat to them. The IDF said the army’s internal investigations body was “probing to clarify the reasons behind the death of Razan al-Najjar. The results of the investigation will be sent to the military advocate general upon their completion.”Friday’s protests were held at various locations along the border under the banner of Hamas’s ongoing “March of Return” demonstrations.Since March, Palestinians have been holding weekly “March of Return” protests on the border, which Israel has accused Gaza’s Hamas rulers of using to carry out attacks on troops and attempt to breach the security fence. Hamas, an Islamist terror group, seeks to destroy Israel.Israel has demanded an end to the violent demonstrations along the border in any ceasefire agreement.

Tests concluded, Iran prepares for launching of satellites-Telecommunications minister says preparations have been successful ahead of planned launch criticized by Washington as violating Security Council resolution-By TOI staff    -JAN 6,19

TEHRAN — Iran’s telecommunications minister said Saturday his country’s three new satellites have successfully passed pre-launch tests. In a tweet, Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi said: “Last night, Iranian satellites passed tests successfully.” He did not mention a launch schedule. On Tuesday, Iran said it plans to send Payam, a 200-pound (90-kilogram) non-military satellite into a 310-mile (500-kilometer) orbit using an Iranian Simorgh satellite-carrier rocket.Iran usually displays space achievements in February during the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution. On Thursday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Iran’s plans for sending three satellites into orbit demonstrate the country’s defiance of a UN Security Council resolution that calls on Iran to undertake no activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons.Iran says the launch does not violate the resolution. On Friday an Iranian naval commander said Iran was set to deploy a fleet of warships to the western Atlantic Ocean in the coming months, in an apparent bid to counter the presence of a US aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf.Rear-Admiral Touraj Hassani told the state-run IRNA news site the flotilla of warships would depart for the Atlantic in March, and the mission would take several months. The flotilla announcement is likely intended to boost Iran’s military image amid rising tensions with the United States, which in November re-imposed all sanctions lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers. In December, the US deployed an aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf, the first since America’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and breaking the longest carrier absence in the volatile region since at least the 9/11 terror attacks.A day after the arrival of the USS John C. Stennis, Iran launched a military drill in the waterway’s strategic Strait of Hormuz, the passageway for nearly a third of all oil traded by sea.

Shaked tells mother of Jewish terror probe suspect to ‘be strong’-In phone call, justice minister clarifies she cannot get involved in investigation; left-wing activists say she would not have same conversation if inmate were Palestinian-By Jacob Magid-TOI-JAN 6,19

Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked spoke on the phone with the mother of one of the teens arrested in a Jewish terror probe, telling her to “stay strong” and adding that she would relay the woman’s concerns regarding her son’s treatment in Israeli custody to the relevant authorities. The mother began the call, leaked to the Kan broadcaster Friday, begging Shaked to speak with State Prosecutor Shai Nitzan and ensure that he allows her son to see a lawyer. The Lod District Court has signed off on security officials’ request to bar the three suspects in the major security probe, details of which have been gagged, from meeting with an attorney since their arrest on Sunday.Israeli law allows authorities to delay an attorney visit for a terrorism suspect by up to 21 days — subject to court appeal. On Thursday, the Lod District Court ruled that the minors be allowed to meet with their lawyers on Saturday evening, nearly a week after their arrest.“I relayed to him (Nitzan) your cry and made the point clear to him. He made sure that the district attorney was following the matter personally and also reporting back to him,” Shaked told the mother, who sounded as if she was fighting back tears throughout the phone call. However, the justice minister clarified that she could not intervene in the investigation and that she did not even know the details of the probe.“How can it be that in the State of Israel, a civilized country, our 16-year-old children have not yet seen a lawyer?” the mother continued to lament.“What I can do — I have already done twice, but will do for the third time — is to bring the matter to the state prosecutor’s attention,” Shaked responded.“Be strong, and let me know if there is any good news tomorrow,” the minister told the terror suspect’s mother at the conclusion of the phone call.Shaked’s office confirmed the phone call in a statement, emphasizing the importance of protecting the rights of prisoners. However, the justice minister also criticized the leaking of the conversation, saying it “did not indicate good faith.”Left-wing activists criticized Shaked for showing courtesy to a parent of a terror suspect, arguing she would not have acted the same had the inmate been Palestinian.“Every detainee, let alone minors, has the right to see an attorney upon arrest. The thought that we have reached a time when such a basic right depends on the justice minister’s efforts is frightening,” began Peace Now CEO Shaqued Morag in a tweet.“It also raises the question — is the minister’s phone also open to the mothers of Palestinian minors who are interrogated without seeing an attorney?” the left-wing activist added.“When the justice minister holds a direct channel of contact with the families of murder suspects, do not be surprised that there is Jewish terrorism,” tweeted former Peace Now CEO and current candidate in the upcoming Meretz party primaries, Yariv Oppenheimer. The gagged investigation is being conducted jointly by the Shin Bet security service and the police’s nationalistic crime unit, which are probing the incident as a possible Jewish terror plot.On Sunday morning, a squad of Shin Bet agents and officers in the Yasam police SWAT unit raided a yeshiva in the northern West Bank and grabbed one student.Shortly thereafter, a second student was arrested on his way to the religious institution. Hours later, a third teen was arrested in the central city of Modiin.During one of the arrests, the Kan public broadcaster reported that agents in the Shin Bet security service uncovered an Israeli flag with a swastika drawn on it along with the phrase, “Death to Zionists.”An official at the northern West Bank religious high school said that roughly 30 students were questioned by the Shin Bet in the weeks leading to the arrests. The Shin Bet and police’s barring of attorney visits has led to criticism of Israeli authorities’ tactics in probing Jewish terror.Dozens of prominent national religious leaders — among them the chief rabbis of Jerusalem, Safed, Afula, Kiryat Motzkin and Kiryat Arba — signed on to a Thursday letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Shaked and Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan claiming that the Shin Bet was using prohibited interrogation methods and demanding that the ministers prevent the security agency’s “trampling” of the detainees rights.Earlier this week, the Lod District Court threw out confessions given under extreme duress by a Jewish far-right activist accused of a series of crimes, including membership in a terror organization and vandalizing a prominent Jerusalem church. The suspect, whose name has been gagged since he was a minor at the time the apparent hate crimes were carried out, was arrested in January 2016 as part of the Shin Bet security service’s broader crackdown against the “terrorist infrastructure” behind the deadly firebombing of the Dawabsha family in the Palestinian village of Duma in July 2015.During his interrogation, the suspect confessed to the allegations against him. However, his attorney Itamar Ben Gvir argued that those confessions were given following an elaborate jailhouse informant exercise carried out by the Shin Bet and Israel Police in which the suspect was placed in a mock prison in Acre for four days and was threatened and harassed by detectives pretending to be inmates.Last month, the “Uvda” investigative TV program published recordings from the jailhouse informant exercise, in which the fake inmates could be heard threatening him and preventing him from eating and sleeping in an effort to get him to talk.Nearly an identical jailhouse informant exercise was carried out at the same Acre facility against one of the suspects in the Duma attack. However, the Lod District Court ruled last year that the confession extracted from the alleged accomplice was admissible in the case against him. Other admissions of guilt given after the teen underwent torture were thrown out.The trial against the alleged accomplice — whose name has been barred from publishing since he was a minor at the time of the Duma attack — and primary suspect Amiram Ben Uliel is ongoing.

Arriving in Israel, Bolton warns Syria not to use chemical weapons after pullout-Ahead of talks with Netanyahu, Trump’s national security adviser says Assad regime should know that US response to chemical attacks will not diminish with troop withdrawal-By TOI staff and Agencies-JAN 6,19

US national security adviser John Bolton said Saturday that Syria should not see the upcoming American troop withdrawal from the country as an excuse to use chemical weapons.Speaking to reporters on his plane shortly before landing in Tel Aviv, Bolton warned President Bashar Assad’s regime that the use of chemical weapons in the future would not be tolerated.“There is absolutely no change in the US position against the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime and absolutely no change in our position that any use of chemical weapons would be met by a very strong response, as we’ve done twice before,” Bolton said, according to the Reuters news agency.“So the regime, the Assad regime, should be under no illusions on that question.”US President Donald Trump’s top national security adviser added: “As we elaborate how the withdrawal is going to occur and the circumstances, we don’t want the Assad regime to see what we do as representing any diminution in our opposition to the use of weapons of mass destruction.”If chemical weapons were to be used, “a lot of options would be on the table … if they don’t heed the lessons of those two strikes the next one will be more telling,” Bolton said.Bolton is visiting Israel and Turkey in a bid to shore up support from America’s partners amid increasing tensions in the region and in the wake of Trump’s surprise announcement that he would withdraw American troops from Syria. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will next week make an eight-country tour of the region with a similar aim.Bolton will focus on Syria and “how the US will work with allies and partners to prevent the resurgence of ISIS, stand fast with those who fought with us against ISIS, and counter Iranian malign behavior in the region,” according to National Security Council spokesman Garrett Marquis. The national security adviser is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before being joined in Turkey by the newly announced US special envoy for the anti-Islamic State coalition, Jim Jeffrey, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joseph Dunford. They are expected to pressure Turkish officials not to launch an offensive targeting Kurdish fighters in Syria.Turkey considers the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, or YPG, a terrorist group linked to an insurgency within its own borders.Pompeo told Newsmax Thursday that “ensuring that the Turks don’t slaughter the Kurds” was part “of the American mission set,” a comment that Turkey said showed a lack of information about the situation.A State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity to preview Pompeo’s trip, said the secretary’s aim was to counter “false narratives” that the US is abandoning the Middle East and to make the point that Iran continues to be a threat. “We are not going anywhere,” the official said.In addition to Jordan, Pompeo plans stops in Egypt, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Kuwait. The US hopes each country will play a significant role in a planned regional strategic partnership being called an “Arab NATO.”The situation in Syria is set to become even more fragile after Trump announced last month that he will pull all American ground troops out of the country. The US had been leading the coalition against the Islamic State terror group, while also helping to thwart the establishment of permanent Iranian military infrastructure in Syria. The surprise announcement rattled Jerusalem, with Israeli officials expressing concern that America’s absence would open the door for Tehran to create a so-called “land bridge” from Iran, through Iraq and Syria, into Lebanon and to the Mediterranean Sea.This week, Trump sparked further consternation in Israel when he said that Iran “can do what they want” in Syria, appearing to give Tehran free rein to further entrench itself in the country, though he also said Iran was pulling its forces out of the country.A senior Israeli official said Monday that Netanyahu has asked Trump to stagger the US withdrawal over a lengthy period of time, rather than carry out an immediate pullout. The New York Times then reported that Trump has agreed to allow the US military to gradually pull troops out of Syria over a period of about four months, rather than the rapid withdrawal he had initially indicated when announcing the measure.Netanyahu said that the US pullout will not deter Israel from continuing to attack Iranian military interests in Syria. On Thursday, he told IDF cadets at Bar Ilan University that Israel was continuing to “act determinedly against anyone seeking to endanger us.”Meanwhile, Pompeo told Netanyahu earlier this week the planned withdrawal of forces from Syria would not alter America’s commitment to countering Iranian aggression and maintaining Israel’s security.“The decision by the president on Syria in no way changes anything that this administration is working on alongside Israel,” Pompeo said at a joint press conference with Netanyahu in Brazil.A senior diplomatic official said that Pompeo assured Netanyahu during the meeting that the planned withdrawal of US ground forces from Syria will not alter Washington’s commitment to countering Iranian aggression and maintaining Israel’s security.

Pompeo and Bolton head to Mideast amid tension over Syria pullout-We’re not abandoning the region, says State Department official; planned withdrawal, which led to Mattis resignation, will dominate Trump officials’ agenda on trip-By Matthew Lee and Zeke Miller-TOI-JAN 6,19

WASHINGTON (AP) — US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton are hoping their trips to the Middle East can help shore up support from America’s partners amid increasing tensions in the region. In his first Mideast visit since President Donald Trump’s recent announcement that he intends to withdraw US forces from Syria, Pompeo will stop in eight countries, starting with Jordan on Wednesday, the State Department said. Bolton planned to depart Friday for Israel and Turkey, his spokesman said. The Syria decision, which led to the resignations of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and the US special envoy for the anti-Islamic State coalition, Brett McGurk, is expected to dominate the officials’ agenda, along with the Trump administration’s hard line on Iran, the conflict in Yemen and the situation in Iraq. The State Department announced Friday that veteran diplomat Jim Jeffrey, who has been serving since August as the special representative for Syrian engagement, would assume McGurk’s anti-IS duties. The Trump-ordered withdrawal of US troops in Syria was initially expected to be completed within weeks, but has been slowed as the president has acceded to requests from aides, allies and members of Congress for a more orderly pullout. The US drawdown is feared to clear the way for a Turkish assault on Kurdish fighters in Syria who have fought alongside American troops against the Islamic State group.A State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity to preview Pompeo’s trip, said the secretary’s aim was to counter “false narratives” that the US is abandoning the Middle East and to make the point that Iran continues to be a threat. “We are not going anywhere,” the official said.In addition to Jordan, Pompeo plans stops in Egypt, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Kuwait. The US hopes each country will play a significant role in a planned regional strategic partnership being called an “Arab NATO.”Bolton also will focus on Syria and “how the US will work with allies and partners to prevent the resurgence of ISIS, stand fast with those who fought with us against ISIS, and counter Iranian malign behavior in the region,” according to National Security Council spokesman Garrett Marquis.Bolton was scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before being joined in Turkey by Jeffrey and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joseph Dunford. They are expected to pressure Turkish officials not to launch an offensive targeting Kurdish fights in Syria.Turkey considers the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, or YPG, a terrorist group linked to an insurgency within its own borders.Pompeo told Newsmax Thursday that “ensuring that the Turks don’t slaughter the Kurds” was part “of the American mission set,” a comment that Turkey said showed a lack of information about the situation. After a brief stop in Amman, Pompeo will fly to Cairo for counterterrorism and energy cooperation talks with Egyptian officials and to give a speech on the US “commitment to peace, prosperity, stability, and security in the Middle East,” the State Department said. The speech is expected to be a counterpoint to an address that president Barack Obama delivered in Cairo in 2009 in which he sought to reach out to the Muslim world. From Cairo, Pompeo heads to Manama, Bahrain, home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet, to continue discussions on the Middle East Strategic Alliance that is aimed at confronting Iran’s increasing assertiveness in the Persian Gulf.Pompeo will then visit Abu Dhabi, where he will push for all parties to the conflict in Yemen to follow through on de-escalation agreements they reached at UN-brokered peace talks in Sweden last month. The Emirates are Saudi Arabia’s main partner in a coalition fighting Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The UAE is also at the center of a festering dispute involving most of the Gulf Arab nations and Qatar, which will be Pompeo’s next stop. In Doha, the secretary plans to underscore the importance the US places on Gulf unity in standing up against Iran. Qatar has been subject to a blockade by its neighbors, including Saudi Arabia and the Emirates, which accuse it of supporting terrorism, since June 2017.From Doha, Pompeo will travel to Riyadh for talks with Saudi officials about Yemen, Iran and Syria as well as the investigation into the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The Washington Post contributor was killed at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul in October.Earlier this week, Saudi prosecutors announced they would seek the death penalty against five of 11 suspects in Khashoggi’s slaying, in which members of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s entourage have been implicated. BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's BSI cyber defense agency on Saturday defended its role in responding to a far-reaching data breach, saying it could not have connected individual cases it was aware of last year until the entire data release became public. The government said on Friday that personal data and documents from hundreds of German politicians and public figures including Chancellor Angela Merkel had been published online, in what appeared to be one of Germany's biggest data breaches. The incident has shocked the establishment and prompted calls for security agencies to clarify whether any security deficiencies they were aware of had been exploited, and if they could have acted sooner to head off the breach. The BSI said in a statement that it was contacted by a lawmaker in early December about suspicious activity on their private email and social media accounts."Only by becoming aware of the release of the data sets via the Twitter account 'G0d' on Jan. 3, 2019, could the BSI in a further analysis on Jan. 4, 2019 connect this case and four other cases that the BSI became aware of during 2018," it said."At the beginning of December 2018, it was not foreseeable that there would be more cases."The BSI said on Friday all but one of the seven parties in the lower house had been affected. German media said that party was the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD).Last year, lawmakers said a powerful cyber attack had breached the foreign ministry's computer network.Security officials have blamed most previous breaches of data security on a Russian hacking group, while the Kremlin has consistently denied involvement in such incidents. After the latest data breach, Justice Minister Katarina Barley said she was considering stricter security requirements for software makers and Internet platform operators."We are examining the extent to which stricter legal provisions are useful and necessary here," she told weekly newspaper Welt am Sonntag, according to a pre-released article.Authorities were investigating all possibilities, including espionage, one government source said on Friday, adding that it was unlikely any single person could have compiled the massive amounts of data that had been released. The BSI said investigations so far had showed the data breaches predominantly concerned private and personal accounts, but that it is responsible for the operational protection of government networks.(Writing by Paul Carrel; Editing by Kevin Liffey and Clelia Oziel)

Britain warns on travel to southern India after temple unrest-[AFP]-YAHOONEWS-Chinta Mary Anil-January 6, 2019

Thiruvananthapuram (India) (AFP) - Britain on Saturday warned tourists visiting the southern Indian state of Kerala after sporadic violence in recent days over the admission of women to one of Hinduism's holiest temples. In updated travel advice, London advised UK nationals in Kerala, popular with tourists particularly at this time of year, to "monitor media reports closely, remain vigilant and avoid large public gatherings".The Sabarimala temple has been at the centre of a prolonged showdown between traditionalists and authorities since September, when India's top court overturned a ban on women of menstruating age -- deemed as those aged 10 to 50 -- setting foot inside. After several weeks of hardliners preventing women from accessing the hilltop temple, at times violently, earlier this week two women managed to sneak inside before dawn and become the first to worship there since the landmark ruling.A third woman from Sri Lanka said she entered the temple on Thursday night but this was disputed by the temple authorities, who performed a "purification" ritual after the two other women made their way into the shrine. The entry of the women has sparked days of clashes across Kerala involving enraged Hindu devotees, riot police using tear gas and water cannon, and activists from Kerala's leftist state government -- which supports the entry of women. One man died and almost 300 people have been injured including more than 100 police officers and some 10 journalists, police say. More than 3,000 protesters have either been arrested or taken into preventive custody.Police said Saturday that unidentified attackers hurled a homemade bomb at the home of a politician from the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and set ablaze the office the hardline Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) group. Both are opposed to the court's order to allow women inside the temple. No injuries were reported in the blast or the fire, police said. The fresh attacks came hours after unknown attackers bombed the house of a politician linked to the state's ruling Communist Party, which has vowed to implement the court order.- Political violence -Kerala has a history of political violence between Hindu and the left-leaning parties.Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Hindu nationalist BJP has joined calls by his party and the RSS for a statewide shutdown to protest the women's entrance.Modi's party accuses the state government of backing "anti-religious" groups to violate Hindu traditions.Hindu groups believe that women of menstruating age should not enter the temple because they are "impure" and the temple deity, Ayyappa, was celibate. The Communist Party has accused the BJP and RSS of inciting violence in the state.Women are barred from a handful of Hindu temples in India, including Sabarimala, where it was considered a taboo for centuries before the ban was given legal force by Kerala High Court in 1991.But the Supreme Court in a landmark judgement in September overturned the Kerala court's ruling after six women lawyers petitioned it in 2006, challenging a ban they said violated their fundamental rights.

Clashes erupt in Paris as 'yellow vests' protest at unrepentant Macron-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Richard Lough and Elizabeth Pineau-January 6, 2019

PARIS (Reuters) - Rioters in Paris torched motorbikes and set barricades ablaze on the upmarket Boulevard Saint Germain on Saturday, as protests against high living costs and the perceived indifference of President Emmanuel Macron turned violent on the fringes. The latest "yellow vest" street marches began peacefully in the French capital but degenerated in the afternoon as protesters threw missiles at riot police blocking bridges over the Seine river.Officers fired tear gas to prevent protesters crossing the river and reaching the National Assembly. One riverboat restaurant was set ablaze and a policeman wounded when he was struck by a bicycle hurled from a street above the riverbank. Two months after they started blocking roads, occupying highway tollbooths and staging sometimes-violent street protests in Paris, the yellow vests wanted to inject new momentum into a movement that weakened over the holidays.Macron's government, shaken by the unrest, had this week hardened its stance against the uprising, branding the protesters as agitators seeking to overthrow the government.Driving the unrest is anger particularly among low-paid workers over a squeeze on household incomes and a belief that Macron is deaf to citizens' needs as he enacts reforms seen as favoring the wealthy."They have no right to leave us in the shit like this," said protester Francois Cordier. "We're fed up with having to pay out the whole time, we've had enough of this slavery, we should be able to live on our salaries."Thousands more rallied in cities including Bordeaux and Toulouse in southwest France, Rouen in the north of the country and Marseille in the southeast. An estimated 25,000 took to the streets nationwide in what was dubbed Act VIII, BFM TV reported, barely 10 percent of the number in the first weeks of protests but higher than last week."POWER TO THE PEOPLE" As darkness fell, officers dispersed scores of yellow vests gathered on the Champs Elysees. Television images showed hooded youths setting a car alight on a side street, but there was no repeat of the unrest that erupted in late November, when shops were looted, banks vandalized and the Arc de Triomphe defaced.Authorities have blamed the worst of the violence in recent weeks on anarchists, anti-capitalists and extreme groups on the fringes of the yellow vest movement. The protests which come 18 months into Macron's tenure and his drive to reshape the economy have already forced concessions from the 41-year-old president.Last month, Macron promised tax cuts for pensioners, wage rises for the poorest workers and the scrapping of planned fuel tax increases to quell the unrest at a cost to the Treasury of 10 billion euros ($11 billion). The measures marked the first big U-turn for a president elected 18 months earlier on a platform to break with traditional French politics and liberalize the heavily-regulated economy. In a New Year's Eve address, Macron vowed to press on with his reform agenda, saying: "We can't work less, earn more, cut taxes and increase spending."Faced with record low popularity ratings, Macron is expected to pen a letter soon to the nation setting out his plans for coming months. These include a nationwide debate with citizens on ecological, fiscal and institutional questions, the results of which he says will feed into the policy-making process."We have to give power back to the people and not a minority that serves its own interests," said a second yellow vest protester outside the old stock market building.(Reporting by Richard Lough, Elizabeth Pineau and Johnny Cotton; Writing by Richard Lough; Editing by David Evans and David Holmes)

Heavy snow in Germany, Austria causes chaos for travelers-[Associated Press]-YAHOONEWS-FRANK JORDANS-January 6, 2019

BERLIN (AP) — Heavy snow caused travel chaos in parts of Germany and Austria as authorities closed roads and train routes because of avalanche danger and airports reported weather-related cancelations Saturday.Munich Airport, Germany's second biggest, said 120 flights were canceled and others were delayed while workers cleared runways of snow and removed ice from planes.German police said one person died and two people were seriously injured when their car skidded into oncoming traffic on icy roads near the town of Bad Toelz. In Austria, training and the qualification stage for the annual Four Hills ski jump tournament was canceled after more than 50 centimeters (20 inches) of fresh snow fell overnight.Authorities closed roads around Bischofshofen, where the competition is being held. Austrian railway company OeBB said several train connections in the country were suspended due to the avalanche risk.Salzburg regional authorities warned against off-trail skiing, adding that "many large, several very large avalanches are likely in the afternoon and overnight" that could affect roads and rail lines.Austrian public broadcaster ORF reported that the small village of St. Johann was evacuated because authorities feared strong winds could trigger a large avalanche. Meanwhile, some 600 residents and tourists were stuck in the village of Soelktal following a road closure, the station reported.Innsbruck airport said "current weather conditions have caused major restrictions in air traffic" and urged travelers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.Significant snowfall is forecast for southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland in coming days.Separately, authorities in Greece reported travel disruptions due to snowfall in the north of the country.

2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.

14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17 Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19 From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.

3 issues we can't accept: Situation with US, Israel, Hamas'-Abbas: ‘I have no more strength to fight, but I won’t end my life as a traitor’-In Egypt, PA president threatens to cancel Oslo Accords, halt security coordination with Israel, reiterates refusal to deal with Trump over recognition of Jerusalem-By TOI staff-JAN 7,19

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday night said all agreements with Israel were in jeopardy, including the Oslo Accords and security coordination, due to the moribund state of the peace process. He added that he did not intend to negotiate on US President Donald Trump’s expected peace plan due to America’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.“We are dealing with three issues that we can not accept: the situation with the US, the situation with Israel and the situation with Hamas,” Abbas told reporters during a visit to the Egyptian capital of Cairo.“The doors are closed to the US,” he continued. “As long as it does not retract its decisions against the Palestinian people, no Palestinian should meet with the American leadership, no matter what their role is.”Abbas went on to state that the Palestinian Authority was reexamining its security coordination and agreements with the Jewish state. “The future is dangerous,” he said. “I have no more strength to fight, but I will not end my life as a traitor. I can say ‘no,’ and the Palestinian people beside me also say ‘no’.”Abbas was set to meet in Egypt with President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi to discuss reconciliation efforts between Hamas and Fatah.Fatah officials have accused Hamas authorities in the Gaza Strip of having prevented Fatah members Monday from lighting a torch in Gaza City to commemorate the 54th anniversary of their party’s founding.Hamas, an Islamist terror group that seeks to destroy Israel, and Fatah have been at loggerheads since 2007 when the former ousted the Fatah-dominated PA from Gaza. While the rival parties have signed a number of agreements to advance reconciliation, they have failed to implement them. Most recently, Fatah and Hamas signed an Egyptian-sponsored reconciliation agreement in October 2017, but did not succeed in executing it on the ground.Nabil Shaath, Abbas’s adviser for foreign affairs, told The Times of Israel ahead of the trip that the Palestinian leader would ask Sissi “what he thinks needs to be done on the matter of reconciliation because things are not moving in the right direction.”In the recent past, Egypt has been the primary mediator between Hamas and Fatah.Shaath also said Abbas and Sissi will discuss Israel’s recent advancement of more than 2,000 new settlement units. Last month the Defense Ministry committee responsible for authorizing settlement construction advanced plans for nearly 2,200 homes in West Bank settlements.
