The Israeli military is close to wrapping up an operation to find and destroy cross-border attack tunnels dug from Lebanon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday.Netanyahu made the comments as he toured the northern border with other lawmakers, as they unofficially kicked off a campaign for re-election in which national security is expected to be a central issue.The Israel Defense Forces launched Operation Northern Shield earlier this month to track down the tunnels, which it says the Hezbollah terror group planned to use in an opening strike in a future war with Israel.“This operation is almost entirely behind us,” Netanyahu said in a statement released by his office.“There is exceptional work being carried out here that has disarmed the Hezbollah tunnels,” he said. “It [Hezbollah] invested heavily in it and we destroyed it.”Netanyahu, who is also defense minister, was accompanied by other security cabinet members. They received a briefing on the security situation from IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot and the head of the Northern Command, Maj. Gen. Yoel Strik.Netanyahu chided other lawmakers last month for nearly bringing down his government, citing security concerns in the north. ANKARA, Turkey — France will not gain in any way by retaining forces to protect a Kurdish militia in Syria, Turkey’s foreign minister said on Tuesday, after Paris announced it would maintain a presence despite an imminent US withdrawal.Washington’s decision to pull out its 2,000 ground forces from Syria has stunned most allies including France but was greeted with approval by Turkey, which will now have a freer rein to target Kurdish fighters from the US-backed People’s Protection Units (YPG).“If France is staying to contribute to Syria’s future, great, but if they are doing this to protect the (militia), this will bring no benefit to anyone,” Mevlut Cavusoglu said, according to the Hurriyet daily, in comments also partially carried by the state news agency Anadolu.Turkey views the YPG militia as a sister “terrorist” organization of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has waged an insurgency inside Turkey since 1984. The PKK is blacklisted as a terror group by Ankara, the US and the European Union.US President Donald Trump last week ordered the withdrawal of US ground forces that had been in Syria to provide training to the YPG under the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) alliance battling against the Islamic State group.The shock move put allies on the back foot, with French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday saying “an ally must be reliable.”In a sign of the growing diplomatic rift between the two leaders, Macron said, “I deeply regret the decision” by Trump to pullout US troops.Cavusoglu hit out at France’s “support” of the YPG, which he said was “no secret” as he slammed French officials’ meetings with leaders of the SDF’s political wing last week.Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said Turkey will intervene in the coming months against IS and the YPG.Cavusoglu said Turkey has “the power to neutralize (IS) alone” amid fears that a US pullout will hurt the fight against IS.Critics say thousands of IS members are still in Syria and could pose a threat with some analysts concerned the withdrawal could lead to a resurgence of IS.

Some villages there have been cut off due to damaged roads and bridges, making it difficult to supply aid and help people who may be injured or trapped.Military troops, government personnel and volunteers were searching along debris-strewn beaches. Where victims were found, yellow, orange and black body bags were laid out, and weeping relatives identified the dead. Fraternity among individuals of every nation and culture. Fraternity among people with different ideas… Fraternity among persons of different religions,” he said in his traditional “Urbi and Orbi” (To the City and to the World) address in Saint Peter’s Square.The pontiff said he hoped for renewed peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians “that can put an end to a conflict that for over 70 years has rent the land chosen by the Lord to show his face of love.”He also said he hoped a truce in conflict-ravaged Yemen would end a devastating war which has killed around 10,000 people since 2015 and pushed 14 million Yemenis to the brink of famine.“My thoughts turn to Yemen, in the hope that the truce brokered by the international community may finally bring relief to all those children and people exhausted by war and famine,” he said.The pope also evoked the war in Syria, from where US President Donald Trump has decided to pull out some 2,000 troops in a controversial decision, arguing that the Islamic State has been defeated.“May the international community work decisively for a political solution… so that the Syrian people, especially all those who were forced to leave their own lands and seek refuge elsewhere, can return to live in peace in their own country,” he said.
