Israeli anti-drone company sees spike in interest after Gatwick airport scare-Skylock’s technology, originally developed to combat jihadist groups’ UAVs in Syria, downs drones by ‘jamming’ their frequencies-By AP-TOI-27 December 2018

An Israeli technology company says its anti-drone system is drawing major interest after rogue unmanned aircraft sowed chaos at London’s Gatwick Airport last week. The Israeli company Skylock is among a growing industry specializing in detecting and downing intruder drones by “jamming” them, or disrupting their frequencies. The company said Tuesday it saw a 40 percent spike in inquiries into its product since the Gatwick episode.Product manager Asaf Lebovitz said the company, which emerged to target militant drone use in Syria, has shifted focus to commercial applications and has been approached by airports in North America and Europe.Noam Milstein, drone operations chief for Israel’s Civil Aviation Authority, said such systems are “obviously becoming crucial to prevent drone incursions from those who don’t care about the regulations in place.”Amid election stir,

Netanyahu may cut short historic Brazil visit-Five-day trip, the first-ever to the South American nation by an Israeli PM, would be reduced to two days, his office reportedly says-By Raphael Ahren and TOI staff-27 December 2018

With his parliament headed to dissolution and the nation going to elections, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly looking to dramatically shorten an unprecedented trip to Brazil planned for later this week.Netanyahu was scheduled to head to Rio on December 27, the first-ever trip to the Latin American country by an Israeli prime minister. The trip was planned around the inauguration of Brazil’s new president Jair Bolsonaro on January 1. Netanyahu was to return to Israel on January 2.On the schedule was Netanyahu’s first bilateral meeting with Bolsonaro and meetings with representatives of the Jewish community. On December 31 he was to fly to the capital, Brasilia, for events at the Presidential Palace, the Foreign Ministry Palace, and at the National Congress surrounding the inauguration. He was also slated to meet US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Brasilia. On Tuesday, sources in Netanyahu’s office told Hebrew-language media outlets he was now expected to travel on December 28 and be back on December 30, a whirlwind visit that would only leave time for meetings with Bolsonaro, Defense Minister Fernando Azevedo e Silva and Foreign Minister Ernesto Araujo. He will not stay in the country for Bolsonaro’s inauguration, nor meet with Pompeo.Bolsonaro ran a controversial, populist campaign, and pledged shortly after his election in late October to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move his country’s embassy there.“Israel is a sovereign state and we shall duly respect that,” he tweeted at the time.Bolsonaro has also vowed to close the Palestinian mission in Brasilia. The planned embassy move has drawn wide praise from Israel and its supporters, and condemnation from the Arab world.Arab League head Ahmed Aboul Gheit warned Bolsonaro to reconsider the move, according to Reuters.“The Arab world has much respect for Brazil and we want not just to maintain relations, but improve and diversify them. But the intention of moving the embassy to Jerusalem could harm them,” an unnamed diplomat told the news agency, describing the Arab league’s position.Under pressure from Arab nations, the president-elect is reportedly considering walking back some of those promises, but has said he remains committed to boosting his country’s ties with Brazil.Asked by a Brazilian reporter earlier this month what he thought of Latin America’s recent shift to the right, Netanyahu replied: “Our concern is not the domestic decisions, the political decisions, but what is their relationship to us? I was very glad to hear that Mr. Bolsonaro thinks that we should upgrade and change Brazil’s attitude to Israel.”Brazil is among the largest exporters of halal meat to the Arab world, and exporters have lobbied Bolsonaro not to move the embassy and risk trade, according to Reuters. The president-elect appeared to briefly back off the pledge last month, but his son Eduardo Bolsonaro recently told Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, that it was a matter of “when, not if.”Only the United States and Guatemala currently have their embassies in Jerusalem, while other countries have theirs in Tel Aviv.

Canadian imam: Saying ‘Merry Christmas’ is worse than murder-Younus Kathrada tells youths in British Columbia they should be offended by tenets of Christianity, with which there is ‘enmity,’ adds: ‘I’m not saying go out and just kill them’-By TOI staff-DEC 27,18

A Canadian imam has said Muslims who congratulate Christians for the Christmas holiday are committing crimes worse than adultery and murder.During a sermon at the Muslim Youth of Victoria in British Columbia, Sheikh Younus Kathrada said he viewed with “great sadness” his fellow Muslims’ casual treatment of the “false holiday.”And he asserted that Muslims “must be offended” by Christians’ beliefs, in a video of his sermon provided by the Middle East Media Research Institute.“There are those who will say to them “Merry Christmas.” What are you congratulating them on?” he asked. “Congratulations on the birth of your Lord? Is that acceptable to a Muslim? Are you now approving of their beliefs? By saying that you are approving of it.”He then claimed that “If a person were to commit every major sin — committing adultery, dealing with interest, lying, murder… If a person were to do all of those major sins, they are nothing compared to the sin of congratulating and greeting the non-Muslims on their false festivals.”Canadian Cleric Younus Kathrada: Congratulating Christians for Christmas is Worse than Murder pic.twitter.com/1S73XPjfRk— MEMRI (@MEMRIReports) December 24, 2018-Kathrada was quick to note that he did not mean Muslims should “treat the non-Muslims in a bad way or that we deal with them unjustly.“I’m not saying, and I’ve never said, go out and just kill them, and do this to them… No! Because Allah tells us not to allow the enmity that may exist between you and a people to cause you to be unjust towards them. Rather, be just.”Well, as long as he’s being reasonable about it.

Turkey ‘determined’ to drive out Syrian Kurdish forces-After Trump announcement of US withdrawal from Syria, Turkish FM says country has the ‘strength to neutralize’ IS on its own-By ZEYNEP BILGINSOY-TOI- 27 December 2018

ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkey said Tuesday it is working with the United States to coordinate the withdrawal of American forces but remains “determined” to clear US-allied Kurdish fighters from northeastern Syria.Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters that “if Turkey says it will enter, it will,” in comments carried by private DHA news agency. His comments came amid reports that Turkey-backed Syrian rebels are getting ready to begin a military operation in and near the northern town of Manbij that is controlled by Kurdish-led fighters. For weeks, Turkey has been threatening to launch a new offensive against the Kurdish fighters, who partnered with the US to drive the Islamic State jihadist group out of much of northern and eastern Syria. Ankara views the Kurdish forces as terrorists because of their links to an insurgent group inside Turkey.US President Donald Trump announced the planned withdrawal of US forces after a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier this month. The minister also said Ankara and Washington have agreed to complete a roadmap on Manbij until the US withdraws. Under the June deal, Kurdish forces would leave Manbij, in the western Euphrates valley, but delays have infuriated Turkey.Turkey-backed Syrian opposition fighters have been moving to the outskirts of Manbij and the Turkish army continued to dispatch tanks, artillery, and other equipment to the border and an area administered by Turkey in northern Syria, according to Turkish media reports.Maj. Youssef Hammoud, of the Turkey-backed Syrian rebels known as the National Army, said the military operation against Kurdish-led forces in northern Syria is “near but has not started yet.”The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor, said Turkey has ordered rebels it backs to begin a military operation in Manbij “in the coming hours.”“It is crucial that the US doesn’t appear as not having kept its promises,” Cavusoglu said.He argued that Turkey has the “strength to neutralize” IS on its own and criticized France, which has promised to stay in Syria despite the US decision.Cavusoglu warned it would not benefit France if it was staying in Syria to protect the YPG, the main Kurdish militia in Syria.Erdogan, speaking to reporters in Ankara, said Turkey was taking into account Trump’s announcement on Syria rather than French President Emmanuel Macron’s decision. The future of the international coalition against IS, which includes Turkey, the US, and France, remains unclear. The Turkish president also announced that a delegation was heading to Moscow and that he would meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Turkey has been negotiating on behalf of the Syrian opposition with Russia and Iran, which support the Syrian government, as part of efforts to end the nearly 8-year civil war.Trump announced last week that the US will withdraw all of its 2,000 forces in Syria, a move that will leave control of the oil-rich eastern third of Syria up for grabs. Russia launched its military operation in Syria in 2015 to back its longtime ally President Bashar Assad.Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryakov said Tuesday in an interview with the RIA Novosti news agency that it would be a “big mistake” to dismantle a hotline that Russia and the US use to prevent potential clashes in Syria, despite the US withdrawal, and said he sees no indications the Americans would do that.

Clashes erupt as Sudanese march on presidential palace-Protest called by umbrella of professional unions, supported by largest political parties, aims to force 29-year strongman Omar Bashir from office-By Hamza Hendawi-TOI-27 December 2018
CAIRO (AP) — Sudanese police used tear gas and fired in the air Tuesday to disperse thousands of protesters attempting to march on the presidential palace in Khartoum to demand that Omar Bashir, Sudan’s president of 29 years, step down, according to activists and video clips posted online. The clips purported to show crowds of several hundred each gathering on side roads and headed toward the palace on the bank of the Blue Nile in the heart of Khartoum. They sang patriotic songs and chanted “freedom,” “peaceful, peaceful against the thieves,” and “The people want to bring down the regime.” The latter was the most popular slogan of the 2010 and 2011 Arab Spring revolts.Large numbers of security forces were deployed across much of Khartoum Tuesday in anticipation of the march, with soldiers riding in all-terrain vehicles. Police fired in the air, used tear gas, and hit demonstrators with batons to disperse them, only for the crowds to assemble again and try to continue their march in pitched battles. There were no immediate reports of casualties. The protest was called by an umbrella of independent professional unions and supported by the country’s largest political parties, Umma and Democratic Unionist. The organizers want to submit a petition demanding that Bashir, in office since he seized power in a 1989 military coup, step down.Tuesday’s march follows nearly a week of protests initially sparked by rising prices and shortages of food and fuel, but which later escalated into calls for Bashir to go. The Sudanese leader was in the al-Jazeera region south of Khartoum on a previously scheduled visit Tuesday. Live TV coverage showed him addressing supporters there in a rally and the country’s state news agency said he inaugurated a road and a girls’ school there. In an address in which he frequently quoted verses from the Quran, Bashir, who is an Islamist, blamed the country’s economic woes on international sanctions and enemies of Sudan who don’t want it to progress. The petition presented by the protesters demands that the general-turned-president hand over power to a “transitional government of technocrats with a mandate agreed upon by all segments of Sudanese society.”“We are asserting that we will continue to exercise all popular and peaceful options, including general strike and civil disobedience, to bring down the regime,” it warned. The march followed a joint statement late Monday by the United States, Britain, Norway, and Canada, which said they were concerned by “credible reports” that Sudan’s security forces have used live ammunition against demonstrators. They urged all parties to avoid violence or the destruction of property while affirming the right of the Sudanese people to peacefully protest to express their “legitimate grievances.”The London-based rights group Amnesty International meanwhile said it had “credible reports” that Sudanese police have killed 37 protesters in clashes during the anti-government demonstrations. An opposition leader said over the weekend that 22 protesters were killed. The government has acknowledged fatalities without providing any figures. The military vowed Sunday to rally behind Bashir and emphasized in a statement that it was operating in harmony with the police and Sudan’s feared security agencies. Also Monday, Bashir said his government would introduce measures to remedy the economy and “provide citizens with a dignified life.”He also warned citizens against what he called “rumor mongers.”The protests over the past week have been met with a heavy security crackdown, with authorities arresting more than a dozen opposition leaders, suspending school and university classes, and imposing emergency rule or nighttime curfews in several cities. There has also been a near-total news blackout on the protests and tighter than usual censorship of newspapers.Bashir, in his mid-70s, overthrew an elected but ineffective government when he seized power in 1989 in collaboration with Islamists. He is wanted by the International Criminal Court for committing crimes against humanity and genocide in the western Darfur region, where disgruntled ethnic African tribesmen revolted for a larger share of the nation’s resources and an end to discrimination by the Arabized and mostly Muslim north.Bashir has ordered the use of force against protesters in the past — including in the last round of unrest in January — successfully crushing them to remain one of the longest-serving leaders in the region. Although his time in power has seen one crisis after another, he is seeking a new term in office, with loyal lawmakers campaigning for constitutional amendments that would allow him to run in the 2020 election.Sudan, a country of more than 40 million people, lost three-quarters of its oil wealth when the mainly animist and Christian south seceded in 2011 after a long and ruinous civil war against the Khartoum government. More recently, a currency devaluation earlier this year caused prices to surge and a liquidity crunch forced the government to limit bank withdrawals, leading to long lines outside ATMs.

Protests in Tunisia after journalist sets himself on fire and dies-Abderrak Zorgui posted video before his self-immolation in struggling provincial city of Kasserine, describing economic desperation, calling for revolt-By Bouazza Ben Bouazza-TOI-DEC 27,18

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — The death of a Tunisian journalist who set himself on fire to protest economic problems in the North African nation has prompted clashes with police and nationwide concern.Journalist Abderrak Zorgui posted a video online before his self-immolation in the struggling provincial city of Kasserine describing his desperation and calling for revolt. He expressed frustration at unemployment and the unfulfilled promises of Tunisia’s 2011 Arab Spring revolution.Authorities said Zorgui died of his injuries Monday soon after being taken to the hospital. His actions prompted a protest Monday night in Kasserine that degenerated into violence, with police firing tear gas to disperse protesters who blocked roads and threw stones at police. Interior Ministry spokesman Sofiane Zaag said Tuesday that six police officers were injured and several people arrested in the protest.A similar self-immolation — by a street vendor lamenting unemployment, corruption and repression — led to nationwide protests fueled by social media that brought down Tunisia’s long-time authoritarian president in 2011. That ushered in democracy for Tunisia and unleashed similar movements around the Arab world.Zorgui’s funeral was being held Tuesday in Kasserine, which has come to symbolize Tunisia’s economic problems and social tensions. Unemployment and poverty are high, and the area has struggled for years against extremists in the nearby mountains who are linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group. The Tunisian National Journalists’ Union called for demonstrations and a possible strike in response to the journalist’s death. In a statement, it accused the state of contributing to Zorgui’s death by not cracking down on corruption.

An Arab Israeli man, 40, was killed and two others, including a brother of the dead man, were wounded in a shooting Tuesday in the West Bank. The shooting appears to be linked to a fight between crime families, and was not a terror attack, according to an initial assessment by police. Rouhani says US sanctions won’t bring Iran ‘to its knees’-Islamic Republic’s president acknowledges measures pushed by Trump will affect the public, the country’s economy and its development-By TOI staff-DEC 27,18

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday presented the country’s new state budget for next year, vowing in a televised speech that reimposed sanctions by US President Donald Trump won’t bring Tehran “to its knees” but acknowledging that they will hinder the economy and affect people’s lives.Washington has reimposed an oil embargo and other damaging sanctions on Iran since pulling out in May from a landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and major powers.“America’s goal is to bring Iran’s Islamic system to its knees,” Rouhani told the parliament, according to the Reuters news agency, “and it will fail in this, but sanctions will no doubt affect people’s lives, and the country’s development and economic growth.”Rouhani presented an annual state budget of some 4,700 trillion rials ($47 billion), for the next Iranian year, which begins on March 21, according to Reuters.Earlier this month, Rouhani called the US sanctions “economic terrorism” that would harm efforts to fight terror and drug-smuggling, as well as lead to an increase in the number of asylum seekers.“I warn those who impose sanctions that if Iran’s ability to fight drugs and terrorism are affected… you will not be safe from a deluge of drugs, asylum seekers, bombs and terrorism,” he said, according to Reuters.“America’s unjust and illegal sanctions against the honorable nation of Iran have targeted our nation in a clear instance of terrorism,” Rouhani said in a televised speech from a conference on terrorism and regional cooperation attended by parliament speakers from Afghanistan, China, Pakistan, Russia and Turkey.“We are here to say that we don’t intend to tolerate such insolence.”AFP contributed to this report.
