100 years later, Belgian town celebrates Canadian liberators-[CBC]-yahoonews-November 11, 2018
When Canadian troops marched into Mons, Belgium, 100 years ago, chasing away the remnants of the German army, locals weren't exactly sure where their liberators were from. The soldiers were wearing kilts and some had berets with a red pom-pom atop. They looked like the Scots who had tried, unsuccessfully, to keep Mons from falling into German hands at the start of the war, in August 1914."We knew you would come back," the people of Mons shouted. The incoming troops, though, were from Montreal's own highland regiment, the Black Watch.Just a few hours after they and a battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment reclaimed the town from the Germans, the Armistice went into effect, and residents joined the Canadians in celebrating the end of the First World War.On Sunday, there was no mistaking the nationality of the soldiers, veterans and families who had returned to Mons to recreate the final scene of the war.Canadian flags, both big and small, filled the Belgian town. Around 11 a.m., ET, the pipes and drums of the Black Watch led a parade through the town's cobblestone streets, following a route similar to the one their predecessors took on Nov. 11, 1918.Several thousand people from the Mons area attended the parade, despite rain, and applauded as the Canadian contingent marched past. "Little kids were coming up to us: Vous ĂȘtes canadien, merci," Black Watch honorary Lt.-Col. Bruce Bolton said from Mons. "They were recalling a story from 100 years ago and were emotional, and thanked us in every way possible."Bolton, wearing a vintage uniform, took up the position that piper Donald MacLeod occupied 100 years ago, leading the Black Watch into Mons."He was one of my bagpipe teachers in the 1960s," Bolton said. "I'm doing this for him."Reconnecting with history-The Black Watch sent several active duty soldiers to take part in Sunday's ceremony as well. Among them was Capt. Jawara Hinkson, a reservist, who works as a Montreal bus driver."I've never experienced anything like this in my life," Hinkson said. "I'm definitely taken aback."Sunday's parade in Mons also featured representatives from other Canadian military units, Belgian military and members of the Belgian legion.Earlier in the weekend, a plaque was unveiled commemorating the Canadian soldiers who liberated the town. Indigenous dancers from Manitoba performed during the ceremony. The events marking the 100th anniversary of Mons' liberation, and the end of the war, introduced a new generation of residents to the town's history."That our little town of Mons was saved by Canadians was maybe known by a few people. But the general public was not aware. So we came to see," said Sibel Meydan, 57, whose family has lived in Mons since the 1960s.Meydan attended Sunday's parade with a group of friends. They cried when they heard the story of George Price, a private from Nova Scotia who was killed on the outskirts of town just minutes before the war ended."It's amazing to see that young men came from another country to give their lives for us," she said. "The freedom I have today is because of them."
Bells of Peace mark 100-year anniversary of WWI's end-[CBC]-November 11, 2018
At about 4:50 p.m. Sunday, 97-year-old Norman Crewe tolled the Bell at St. Mark's Anglican Church in Halifax. The veteran of the Second World War was the first person to toll the bell in a long line of people who attended the Bells of Peace ceremony. The ceremony marks a century since the First World War ended. Each toll represented a year since the armistice."This is more than an honour for me today, it really is, honest. I can't explain the words," said Crewe."I can't explain the way I'm feeling right now to think that here I am at 97-years-old, coming to St. Marks for 71 years and here I am here today to start tolling the bell for the 100-year anniversary."About 200 people of all ages attended the event at St. Mark's, but bells were tolling all across Canada. There are two bells at St. Mark's — one for church services and another for funerals. The one to ring out on Sunday evening was the latter, Crewe said. The Bells of Peace is an initiative from the Royal Canadian Legion and Veterans Affairs Canada.Rev. Vivien Hannon, the priest in charge at St. Mark's, said she's hoping the event is memorable."I hope that when people go away from here — and especially the children — that they'll remember and tell others later on that they marked the end of the First World War in this way," Hannon said.Neighbourhood shaped by First World War-Hannon said the end of the First World War is an interesting thing to think about at St. Mark's in particular. The original church was built in 1866 in north-end Halifax, but was destroyed Dec. 6, 1917 in the Halifax Explosion."The whole history of this area is just bound up with that event that was only happening because of World War I," Hannon said."This church was completed in 1920. But that whole era has a great meaning for us. And last year, in 2017, we did some big events to commemorate the centennial of the explosion."And now to be able to celebrate the end of the war is very meaningful."
Netanyahu cuts short Paris trip as Gaza fighting rages-Defense minister convenes top military brass; flight paths altered at Ben Gurion Airport; IDF dispels rumor of kidnapped soldier-By TOI staff and Judah Ari Gross-NOV 11,18
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cut short a visit to Paris and was returning to Israel after intense fighting broke out between Israeli forces and Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip and a string of rocket sirens wailed across southern Israel.Netanyahu, in Paris on a state visit to commemorate the centenary for the end of World War 1, was updated on the security situation in the enclave on Sunday night, as flight paths were diverted at Israel’s main airport and the country appeared to shift abruptly into war footing.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman was huddled with senior military officials at defense headquarters in Tel Aviv, meeting with the IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot and Shin Bet chief Nadav Argaman and others, his office said, with the meeting lasting around an hour. There was no statement on results of the meeting. The fighting broke out after a group of Israeli commandos drove some three kilometers into Gaza and killed a senior Hamas commander, according to the terror group.A firefight ensued between the Israeli troops and Hamas fighters, with Israeli drones carrying out dozens of airstrikes in the area. The Israeli military confirmed that “an exchange of fire broke out during security activities by the IDF in the Gaza Strip region,” but did not elaborate further, including on if there were any injuries on the Israeli side.As rumors spread wildly on social media on Sunday night, the IDF said no Israeli soldier had been kidnapped in the skirmish.“IDF operated in the Gaza Strip, exchange of gunfire ensued. All IDF soldiers back in Israel,” IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus wrote on Twitter.Several volleys of rockets were apparently shot at Israel amid the fighting, with at least two being intercepted by the Iron Dome anti-missile system. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from missile strikes and local government officials said some alarms may have been triggered by the IDF’s air raids, not by rockets from Gaza.Residents of southern Israel had been instructed to remain close to their bomb shelters in the event of reprisals Sunday night and school in the area was canceled for Monday. The flight paths into and out of Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport were also altered in light of the Gaza clashes. The fighting punctured a reprieve in border tensions between Gaza and Israel. Earlier in the day, Netanyahu had spoken to reporters about his willingness to avoid fighting.Due to security incidents in the south, the Prime Minister has decided to cut short the trip to Paris and will return to Israel tonight.— PM of Israel (@IsraeliPM) November 11, 2018-“I am doing everything I can to avoid an unnecessary war,” said the prime minister, pointing to the deaths of millions during the First World War as an example of senseless bloody warfare. “I am not afraid of war if it’s necessary, but I want to avoid it if it’s not necessary.”Netanyahu was in Paris to attend the 100th anniversary commemorations of the end of World War I along with other world leaders. He is due back in Israel on Monday, but while he is gone, Culture Minister Miri Regev is acting prime minister. Liberman was left in charge of convening the security cabinet of top ministers, which has the ability to declare war and launch major operations, but the group had not been called for a meeting as of 11:30 p.m.According to local Palestinian outlets, the head of Hamas’s eastern Khan Younis battalion was killed in the drone strike, along with at least five other unidentified people. Others were reported injured. The Gaza-based Shams news reported that Palestinians fired at the attacking drones.Weekly Gaza border protests, dubbed the “Great March of Return,” have been going on since March 30 and have mostly involved the burning of tires and rock-throwing along the security fence, but have also seen shooting attacks, bombings and attempted border breaches as well as the launching of incendiary balloons and kites into Israel. Southern Israel has also seen sporadic, but aggressive rocket bombardments from the Gaza Strip.Egypt, alongside United Nations special coordinator for the Middle East peace process Nikolay Mladenov, has recently played a key role in attempts to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and the armed groups in the Strip.Egyptian mediators have been working intensively to maintain calm, and also hope to bring about national reconciliation between the Hamas terror group, which seized Gaza by force in 2007, and the West Bank-based administration of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.Agencies contributed to this report.
Intense clashes with Gaza break out as Hamas commander said killed in IDF raid-Palestinian media reports at least 6 killed, more injured, during Israeli operation in Khan Younis; IDF confirms ‘exchange of fire broke out’, rockets fired at south-By Judah Ari Gross-11 November 2018
Israeli special forces conducted a raid in the Gaza city of Khan Younis on Sunday night, apparently killing several suspected Hamas terrorists, including a senior commander in its military wing, and bringing the region back to the brink of war.The fighting set off a massive round of Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, and at least 10 rockets or mortar shells were fired at southern Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced late Sunday he would return to Israel immediately and cut a trip to Paris short. The flareup punctured a brief calm along the restive border, coming two days after Israel allowed Qatar to send $15 million in cash to Hamas in Gaza — one of the first moves in a reported ceasefire agreement between Israel and the terrorist group.According to Hamas’s military wing, a Qassam Brigades commander, Nour Baraka, was killed by Israeli special forces who drove a “civilian vehicle” three kilometers into Gaza from the border.Baraka was reportedly closely involved in Hamas’s tunnel program and also served as the commander of a Khan Younis regional battalion.Maj. Gen. (res.) Tal Russo, a former commander of the IDF Southern Command, indicated that the operation was likely an intelligence gathering mission gone wrong, rather than an assassination.“Activities that most civilians aren’t aware of happen all the time, every night and in every region. This action — an operation that was apparently exposed — wasn’t an assassination attempt. We have other ways of assassinating people and we know how to do it much more elegantly,” Russo told Channel 10 news. The retired general, who until recently was responsible for the IDF’s missions abroad, also told Army Radio that Baraka was likely killed in a rescue effort to extract the special forces soldiers.Palestinian media outlets reported the Israeli troops had initially tried to capture — not kill — Baraka during the raid, but that the Hamas commander was shot dead after the operation was exposed. This could not be immediately confirmed by the IDF.The Qassam Brigades said it engaged the Israeli commandos, setting off an intense firefight with Israeli troops, including reported intense drone strikes throughout the southern Gaza Strip. The special forces squad was forced to retreat to the Israeli side of the fence under the cover of aerial bombardment, Hamas’s military wing said in a statement.A Hamas spokesperson praised the “brave resistance that repulsed the Israeli aggression.”The Israeli military confirmed that “an exchange of fire broke out during security activities by the IDF in the Gaza Strip region,” but would not elaborate further. The military refused to comment on Israeli casualties and would only confirm that no Israeli soldiers had been kidnapped, in an effort to tamp down on rumors. Many details of the Israeli operation in Gaza could not be published by order of the military censor.Following the clashes, at least 10 projectiles were fired at southern Israel as of 23:58 p.m. Sunday, two of which were shot down by the Iron Dome air defense system, the army said. After midnight warning sirens continued to wail and several more projectiles were fired into Israel, with no immediate reports of casualties or damage.Quick recap so far: IDF operated in the Gaza Strip, exchange of gunfire ensued. All IDF soldiers back in Israel. Several alarms have sounded in Southern Israel. More to follow.— Jonathan Conricus (@LTCJonathan) November 11, 2018-Residents of southern Israel were instructed to remain close to their bomb shelters in the event of reprisals Sunday night. There were no reports of rockets or mortar shells landing inside Israeli communities near the Gaza border. The projectiles not intercepted by the Iron Dome apparently landed in open fields. The flight paths into and out of Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport were altered in light of the Gaza clashes, a spokesperson for the Aviation Authority said.Netanyahu was informed of the flareup while in Paris on an official state visit.“In light of the security-related incidents in the South, the prime minister has decided to shorten his visit to Paris and to return to Israel tonight,” his office said in a statement.Culture Minister Miri Regev was appointed acting prime minister in Netanyahu’s absence; however, she cannot call a meeting of the powerful security cabinet as she is not a member of it.Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman has the authority to hold a special session of the security cabinet. On Sunday evening, he met with top defense officials in the army’s Tel Aviv headquarters, including IDF chief Gadi Eisenkot and the head of the Shin Bet security service Nadav Argaman.According to the Gaza Strip’s Hamas-run health ministry, in addition to Baraka, four other Hamas members, all in their 20s, were killed in clashes with the IDF. A “civilian” was also killed in the exchange, the ministry said.Seven other Palestinians were reportedly injured in the clashes.Israelis in the Eshkol region, across from Khan Younis, reported hearing multiple explosions as fighting broke out at around 9:30 p.m.Roads immediately surrounding the Gaza Strip were closed in light of military activities, the police said.Hamas’s interior ministry told Palestinian media that the terror group’s military wing and police force were put on high alert throughout Gaza, following the clashes. The flareup came as the sides were said to be nearing a deal for a ceasefire along the restive border. On Friday, Israel allowed in $15 million of Qatari cash for Hamas to pay workers amid intensive Egyptian led efforts to reach a calm between the sides.Earlier Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel was doing its utmost to prevent “unnecessary wars” in the Gaza Strip, but maintained that diplomacy was futile with the Hamas leaders of the Palestinian enclave. At a press conference in Paris, where the prime minister had attended the 100th anniversary commemorations of the end of World War I along with other world leaders, Netanyahu said no final diplomatic deal was possible with Hamas — the ruler of the beleaguered enclave.“There is no diplomatic solution for Gaza, just as there is no diplomatic solution for ISIS,” said Netanyahu.“I am doing everything I can to avoid an unnecessary war,” said the prime minister, pointing to the deaths of millions during the First World War as an example of senseless bloody warfare. “I am not afraid of war if it’s necessary, but I want to avoid it if it’s not necessary.”Weekly Gaza border protests, dubbed the “Great March of Return,” have been going on since March 30 and have mostly involved the burning of tires and rock-throwing along the security fence, but have also seen shooting attacks, bombings and attempted border breaches as well as the launching of incendiary balloons and kites into Israel. Palestinian infiltrates from Gaza, sets greenhouse on fire in Israeli community-Suspect, who is not armed, nabbed after manhunt; IDF investigating how he managed to get so far-By TOI staff-11 November 2018
A Palestinian man managed to breach the Gaza border fence on Friday and infiltrate several hundred meters into Israel, setting on fire a greenhouse in one of the communities near the border before being caught, the army said. The man was not armed and was taken for interrogation by the Shin Bet Security service. The IDF initially believed that the greenhouse, in the Hof Ashkelon Regional Council area, was set on fire by a flare fired by soldiers looking for the man; however, he told his interrogators that he had set the fire. The army was investigating how the man managed to evade IDF patrols and get so close to an Israeli community. Details of the incident were barred from publication by the IDF censor until he was caught. The incident came during protests along the border in which some 12,000 Gazans participated.Reports said Palestinians also threw several explosive devices at IDF soldiers and two men tried to breach the border before retreating. The army responded with tear gas and riot dispersal means. At least one Palestinian was killed and 37 Palestinians wounded, the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry said.

Saudi coalition halts refueling deal with US for Yemen war-Decision comes as kingdom is under increased scrutiny following the brazen murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi-By AFP-NOV 11,18
A controversial refueling arrangement between the United States and the Saudi-led coalition that is bombing Yemen was ended on Saturday, halting a key part of Washington’s involvement in the conflict. The move came as warplanes pounded the key strategic port city of Hodeida and after Washington’s support for the campaign was placed under increased scrutiny following the brazen murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi by a Saudi intelligence team.Pentagon chief Jim Mattis said he supported Saudi Arabia’s “decision” after the official Saudi Press Agency said the coalition asked for the “cessation of inflight refueling support” from the United States.Riyadh’s grinding war in Yemen as caused growing international outcry, particularly after a string of high-profile coalition strikes that have killed scores of civilians, many of them children.“Recently the Kingdom and the coalition has increased its capability to independently conduct inflight refueling in Yemen,” the SPA said.“As a result, in consultation with the United States, the coalition has requested cessation of inflight refueling support for its operations in Yemen.”Mattis said: “We support the decision by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”In August the defense secretary warned that US support for the coalition was “not unconditional,” noting it must do “everything humanly possible to avoid any innocent loss of life.”The Pentagon had provided refueling capabilities for about 20 percent of coalition planes flying sorties over Yemen.Saudi Arabia and its allies intervened in the conflict between embattled Yemeni President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, whose government is recognized by the United Nations, and the Houthis in 2015.The Shiite Houthi rebels on Friday launched fierce barrages of mortar fire as they battled to slow an advance by pro-government forces deeper into the port city of Hodeida, military sources said.Their chief has vowed his troops would never surrender despite being vastly outnumbered, shelled government positions in the south of the Red Sea city, loyalist officials said. But despite the “intense attacks”, loyalist forces made fresh advances in eastern sectors of Hodeida.Over one week into the renewed offensive, civilians reported relentless air strikes, low-flying jets and Apache helicopters, mortars and missiles on the outskirts of the city and within five kilometres (three miles) of its strategic port, the Norwegian Refugee Council said in a statement. The Iran-backed rebels said their fighters had cut off government supply routes in four sectors of Hodeida province, although there was no confirmation from the loyalist side.On Friday medical sources said that 110 Huthi rebels and 22 pro-government forces had been killed in 24 hours of violence, bringing to at least 382 the number of combatants killed since the battle for Hodeida intensified on November 1.Backed by Saudi air raids, loyalist troops for the first time entered residential neighborhoods on Thursday, using bulldozers to remove concrete road blocks installed by the rebels.Mattis last month made a surprise call for a ceasefire in Yemen and urged warring parties to enter negotiations within the next 30 days. The United Nations has now pushed that deadline back to the end of the year.Nearly 10,000 Yemenis have been killed in the conflict since 2015, according to the World Health Organization. Human rights groups say the real death toll may be five times higher.UN agencies say some 14 million people are at risk of famine in the country — described as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with the World Food Programme saying it will nearly double food aid to the country to avert “mass starvation”.International criticism over US support for Saudi Arabia grew further following the slaying of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The US sees Saudi Arabia as a key ally, especially in terms of providing a counter to Iranian influence in the region.
Interview'How many Israelis were killed by Iranians in last 3 years?'-Russia’s envoy says plane downing still rankles, blames US for fatal Gaza riots-Amb. Anatoly Viktorov urges Jerusalem to coordinate better with Moscow on Syria, backs Abbas refusal to consider Trump peace plan, says calling Hamas terrorists harms diplomacy-By Raphael Ahren-TOI-NOV 11 November 2018
Moscow’s defense establishment is “extremely disappointed” with the Israeli military’s response to the downing of a Russian military reconnaissance plane in September, Russia’s top envoy to Israel said, calling on Jerusalem to better coordinate with the Kremlin its activities in Syria.Ambassador Anatoly Viktorov also said that Israel’s demand that no Iranian troops be stationed in all of Syria was both “unrealistic” and unnecessary, since Tehran has no plans to attack Israel. He noted, somewhat derisively, that no Israelis have been killed at the hands of Iranians in recent years, while dozens of Iranians fell victim to Israeli air strikes in war-torn Syria. In a wide-ranging interview in Russia’s Tel Aviv embassy, Viktorov also discussed Moscow’s position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying he fully understands why Ramallah refuses to even consider the US administration’s forthcoming peace proposal, and stating that the recent months of riots at the Gaza border were “caused directly” by the move of the US embassy to Jerusalem. He not only reiterated Russia’s refusal to consider Hamas a terrorist organization but added that branding the Palestinian group as such “undermines” the peace process. Israel should consider engaging with Hamas, he added, calling it “a legitimate political force.”On September 17, a Syrian S-200 surface-to-air missile shot down a Russian Il-20 plane during an Israeli attack in Syria’s Latakia area, resulting in the death of 15 Russian troops. While President Vladimir Putin initially termed the incident the result of a “chain of tragic accidental circumstances,” Moscow subsequently directly blamed Israel for the incident, and claimed that the Israeli fighter jets were hiding behind the Russian spy plane, thus drawing the Syrian fire. Jerusalem rejects the accusation, insisting that the Israeli F-16s had returned to Israeli airspace by the time the Russian plane was hit.“A very serious incident took place,” Viktorov told The Times of Israel in the interview, speaking in English.“What is needed in our view is to recognize and internalize what happened in order to avoid any such incident in the future. But in order to avoid it we will need to agree on what was the cause of the agreement.”As things stand, the Russian and Israeli militaries disagree on the cause of the incident, the envoy said. “Of course our military is extremely disappointed with the Israeli assessment of this incident,” he added. The incident triggered a serious diplomatic crisis between Jerusalem and Moscow that is still ongoing. The Russian Defense Ministry deemed Israel’s maneuver an “unfriendly act” and last month, in response to the incident, delivered the advanced S-300 missile defense system to Syria.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to continue attacking Iranian targets in Syria, but also sought a meeting with Putin to discuss the future of the so-called “deconfliction” mechanism aimed at preventing the two air forces clashing over Syrian skies. But so far, Putin has not agreed to a meeting, despite several Israeli requests. (Prior to the Syrian downing of the Russian plane, the two leaders had met three times in 2018 alone.)-Mistake is worse than a crime? Viktorov declined to discuss the downing of the plane in any detail, saying he was not a military expert. But he dismissed the Israeli argument that Israel had no fault in it.“There were some maneuvers by the Israeli jets, which [at least] contributed to this situation, and according to the assessment of our Defense Ministry it was not friendly behavior, to put it mildly,” he said, while acknowledging that Putin had called it a “tragic chain of accidents.”Asked whether Moscow believes Israel acted deliberately to harm the Russian plane or if it was an accident, he replied: “There is a well-known [Russian] expression: What is worse than a crime? A mistake.”As a matter of principle, Russia recognizes Israeli security concerns and has therefore asked Iran to distance its troops in Syria some 100 km from the Israeli border, a demand to which Tehran agreed, Viktorov said.At the same time, he dismissed Israel’s official position not to accept any Iranian military presence anywhere in Syria.“It’s an unrealistic request,” the Moscow-born veteran diplomat said, “because the presence of Iranian, as well as Russian, troops on the territory of Syria is legitimate. They’re there at the request of the legitimate Syrian government. And Israel could not demand from the Russian authorities to move Iranians from Syrian territories,” he said.Tehran and Moscow are partners with Damascus “in fighting against terrorists in Syria,” he went on, stressing that Russia told Iran to limit its military activities there to this particular goal. “As far as we know, the Iranian government does not plan to attack Israel first.”Israel says that Iran has already attacked Israel, noting that the Islamic Republic launched an explosive-laden drone from Syria toward Israel on February 10. An Israeli Apache helicopter downed the drone 30 seconds after it crossed into Israeli airspace.Viktorov was unimpressed by that argument.“May I ask you a question as well: How many Israelis were killed by Iranians in the last three years? And how many Iranians were killed during the attacks carried out by Israel on the territory of Syria this year?”Asked to elaborate on his point, he replied: “It’s self-explanatory.”While Israel sees Iran’s military entrenchment in Syria as part of a potential existential threat posed by Iran, no Israelis have been killed as a direct result of Iran’s presence in Syria. Dozens of Iranian troops stationed in Syria have reportedly been killed by Israeli airstrikes in recent years.Asked about Iranian leaders’ continuous threats to annihilate Israel, Viktorov said: “Such a position is not acceptable for us, and we’re explaining our position to the Iranians.”Delivering the S-300 missiles to Syria should not be seen as a “unilateral punitive measure” against Israel, Viktorov said. Rather, Russia did it “because we have to defend the lives of our military men in Syria.”The Syrian army on Thursday indicated that its possession of the S-300 has minimized Israeli attacks on its territory. But a senior Israeli official last week said that Israel’s air force has continued attacking targets in Syria.-Ready to listen-Viktorov, who has been serving as Russia’s ambassador to Israel since July, called for better coordination and intelligence sharing with the Jewish state regarding Syria.“Sometimes we get the feeling Israel thinks it’s the only country that has a secret service. We also have a secret service that does surveillance, as do other countries,” he said. “Let’s exchange information.”Israel routinely attacks Iranian targets in close proximity to Russian troops in Syria, but only gives Moscow one minute warning, he claimed. He urged Jerusalem to give Russia more time to look into such claims. “Let’s communicate,” he said. (Israeli military officials have said Israel gave Russia 12 minutes warning ahead of the September 17 strike.) When it was put to him that Israel may not want to alert Russia too far in advance, lest Moscow warns its Iranian allies of an impending attack, he replied: “We’re not telling Syrians or Iranians to hide anything from Israel. That’s not our policy.“If there are concerns on the Israeli side, we are ready to listen,” he said. “And if there are grounds for these concerns, we could take measures in our contacts with our Iranian and Syrian partners.”Wrong decision on Jerusalem-In April of 2017, Russia surprisingly recognized West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, stressing that the eastern part of the city should become the capital of a future Palestinian state. But Viktorov harshly criticized US President Donald Trump for his December 6, 2017 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and for moving the American Embassy there in May of this year.“We thought that this decision would not contribute to the settlement of the protracted Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but could add even more tensions,” he said. “Unfortunately, that happened.”Hamas is part of Palestinian society, whether you like it or not-Since March, over 160 Palestinians have been killed during violent unrest at Israel’s border, which Viktorov blamed on the Trump administration’s policy change on Jerusalem.“These protests were caused directly by the decision made by Washington,” he asserted, dismissing the idea that the so-called “March of Return” riots, spurred by Gaza’s Hamas rulers, are principally aimed at breaking Israel’s blockade of Gaza.Given Trump’s Jerusalem declaration, the Palestinian Authority is in its right to reject the US as a mediator in the peace process, Viktorov went on.“We can understand them. Of course,” he said.Unilateral actions rarely lead to the expected result, and what was needed now was a concerted effort by various international actors to advance the peace process based on international law and previous UN resolutions, he added.Would he want to urge the Palestinians to at least look at the US administration’s much-awaited peace plan rather than outright rejecting it? “Why should we?” Viktorov asked in response.Once the US moved its embassy to Jerusalem the Palestinians are justified in thinking that the American plan will offer them nothing of interest, he said.-Hamas: Part of Palestinian society-Viktorov, who until earlier this year was the director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department for Humanitarian Cooperation and Human Rights, also spoke out in favor of Hamas, a terrorist organization avowedly bent on Israel’s destruction.“We do not consider Hamas a terrorist organization,” he declared, “because Hamas is part of Palestinian society, whether you like it or not.”In 2005, Hamas was allowed to run in Palestinians elections at the behest of the US, which afterwards refused to recognize the election’s outcome, he recalled.“But the reality is that Hamas is part of Palestinian society, and bearing in mind this reality, we’re keeping contacts with Hamas, discussing with them prospects of an Israeli-Palestinian settlement, the issue of unification of Palestinian leadership, and humanitarian issues related to the situation in Gaza,” he said.In the 1990s, Russia was fighting against terrorists on its territory, who some countries called “freedom fighters,” he said. “I don’t remember if Israel was among those who called them terrorists. I should check.”Asked about Hamas carrying out and celebrating terrorist acts against Jews in the West Bank and inside Israel, he replied: “We’re condemning any violent actions. In our contacts with Hamas representatives we usually underline that it’s not acceptable.“At the same time, we cannot say that all these 200 Palestinians killed in recent months are terrorists. It’s not true; it’s not fair. They are not terrorists.”Russia understands the suffering of Israeli civilians who are attacked by rockets or incendiary balloons from Gaza, he said. But it was important to “urgently address the roots of this situation,” he added. “And those are the unsettled Israeli-Palestinian issues.”Labeling groups like Hamas terrorist organizations “undermines the future political process,” Viktorov said. Rather, the group “should be involved in a possible political solution,” he suggested. Without Hamas as partner, any effort at peacemaking will soon reach a “dead end,” he argued, adding that Israel should also engage with Hamas.Asked how he can expect Israel to negotiate with an organization dedicated to its destruction, he answered: “We are not saying that Israel should enter into urgent negotiations with Hamas on the whole range of issues related to the political settlement.“But what we are saying is that Hamas is a legitimate political force in Palestine, and it’s upon the Palestinians to unify their political representation in future negotiations with Israel.”

Trump in Paris slams Macron’s ‘insulting’ EU army proposals-French president has suggested creating a joint European military force to defend the continent, including from American might-By AFP-TOI-NOV 11,18
PARIS, France — US President Donald Trump on Friday blasted calls by his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, for a European army to defend against threats from powers including the US as “very insulting,” setting a combative tone for his World War I commemorative visit to Paris. No sooner had Trump touched down in the city for a weekend of events to mark the end of First World War, he fired off a tweet castigating his host over proposals to endow the EU with its own, joint army.“President Macron of France has just suggested that Europe build its own military in order to protect itself from the US, China, and Russia,” the US president tweeted, referring to remarks made by Macron three days earlier.“Very insulting, but perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of NATO, which the US subsidizes greatly!” he added.Trump, who is visiting France with his wife Melania for the second time since becoming president, was referring to a call made by Macron in an interview Tuesday for a “real European army.”Macron, an ardent advocate of closer European integration, said a joint European Union military force was needed to wean Europe off American might, not least after Trump announced he was pulling out of a Cold War-era nuclear treaty.“We have to protect ourselves with respect to China, Russia and even the United States,” he told Europe 1 broadcaster, suggesting for the first time that Europe might need to defend itself from America. The French president, who has enacted major defence spending hikes to bring France in line with NATO spending targets, is spearheading the creation of a nine-country European rapid reaction force, independent from NATO.The force, which would fall far short of an army in size and scope, would be able to rapidly mount a joint military operation, evacuate civilians from a war zone or provide aid after a natural disaster.Proposals for a full EU army with a joint command — a pet project of European federalists — remain deeply sensitive, however, among EU members anxious to defend their sovereignty.French officials said Macron’s mooted EU “army” was merely a call for closer defence integration.– Bilateral talks, then lunch –The row over EU defence risks overshadowing commemorations to be attended by 70 world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan. On Saturday morning, Macron and Trump will hold bilateral talks on issues expected to include Syria and Iran before lunching with Melania and Macron’s wife Brigitte. The last time the Macrons hosted the Trumps in Paris in July 2017, during Bastille Day celebrations, they whisked them up the Eiffel Tower for a private dinner on the second floor. The tone of this visit will be markedly less festive.Trump is scheduled to visit two American cemeteries over the course of the weekend, which will culminate with a solemn ceremony Sunday at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triomphe, a monument to France’s war dead.Speaking to reporters Friday before his departure Trump said he was “looking forward” to the trip.“I think it will be something very, very special,” he said. The isolationist US leader has, however, ducked out of a peace conference Sunday afternoon, which Macron and Chancellor Angela Merkel intend to use as a platform for promoting multilateralism.US National Security Advisor John Bolton Friday downplayed Trump’s decision not to attend the inaugural Paris Peace Forum — to be attended by Putin and Erdogan — telling reporters in Paris the president had “a lot of pressing issues” to attend to.Trump and Macron struck up a warm relationship initially, particularly during the US leader’s first visit to Paris, but have repeatedly clashed since then over a growing list of issues, including Trump pulling America out of the 2015 Paris climate accord and the Iran nuclear deal. The WWI commemorations come at a watershed moment for the liberal post-war order, with anti-immigration populists at the helm in the US and Brazil, sharing power in Italy, and making strong gains in Germany, prompting Merkel to announce she is bowing out in 2021.Macron met UK Prime Minister Theresa May near the Belgian border Friday to try to make progress on a Brexit deal and remember the fallen of the battlefields of the Somme. On Saturday afternoon, he will visit the northern town of Compiegne where the armistice ending World War I was signed by the Allies and Germany in a train carriage on November 11, 1918.Macron will meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the site, in a visit symbolizing the close ties between two countries that fought three wars between 1870 and 1945.

GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

Crews fight to save homes from massive California wildfires-[Reuters]-By Stephen Lam-YAHOONEWS-November 11, 2018
PARADISE, Calif. (Reuters) - Crews on Saturday fought two massive, out of control wildfires burning at both ends of California, including a blaze now considered the most destructive in state history and a conflagration menacing the tony beach colony of Malibu. At least nine people were killed in and around the Northern California community of Paradise as the Camp Fire burned down more than 6,700 homes and businesses, more structures than any other California wildfire on record.Paradise Mayor Jody Jones said most of the town's homes and about half its businesses had been left in ruins, predicting a long road of recovery was ahead for the town of about 26,000 residents."It's going to be a process, a lot of hard work, a lot of coming together, but we want to see Paradise be paradise again," Jones told CNN.Several of the victims of the Camp Fire, which broke out on Thursday at the edge of the Plumas National Forest northeast of Sacramento, were found in or near burned out cars, police said. The flames descended on Paradise so fast that many people were forced to abandon their vehicles and run for their lives down the sole road through the mountain town. Some 35 people had been reported missing and three firefighters had been injured. As of Saturday afternoon the Camp Fire had blackened more than 100,000 acres (40,500 hectares) of forest land. Crews had cut containment lines around about 20 percent of the blaze.About 500 miles (800 km) to the south, the Woolsey Fire burning in the foothills above Malibu doubled in size overnight, threatening thousands of homes after triggering mandatory evacuation orders for a quarter million people in the oceanside city as well as other communities in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The fire has destroyed "a lot of homes," with a full count still under way, and has now charred more than 70,000 acres, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby said."Our firefighters have been facing some extreme, tough fire conditions that they said that they've never seen in their lives," Osby said at a news conference. He said crews hoped to take advantage of a lull on Saturday in the fierce Santa Ana winds driving the flames, but that gusts could return on Sunday. All 13,000 residents of Malibu, which is 30 miles west of downtown Los Angeles, were told to get out on Friday. The bodies of two people were discovered in Malibu but it was too early to determine if they died from fire or another cause, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials said.Firefighters have been unable to build any containment lines around the Woolsey Fire, but officials said they hoped to take advantage of a lull in winds on Saturday to make progress. The Woolsey Fire broke out on Thursday in Ventura County near Los Angeles and quickly jumped the 101 Freeway, a major north-south artery, in several places. On Friday, it crossed the Santa Monica Mountains toward Malibu, where flames driven by wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour (80 kph) raced down hillsides and through canyons toward multi-million dollar homes.Early on Saturday, flames approached Malibu's Pepperdine University, a private residential college with 7,700 students, where many remained sheltered on the main campus.School officials told the students that they have been assured by fire officials that the university's buildings were built to withstand fire.Among those forced to flee the Malibu area were celebrities including Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian, who said on Twitter that flames had damaged the home she shares in nearby Calabasas with Kanye West.In Ventura County, most of the town of Thousand Oaks was ordered evacuated, adding to the anguish days after a gunman killed 12 people in a shooting rampage at a bar.President Donald Trump, weighing in on the emergency during a trip to France, said early on Saturday that "gross mismanagement of forests" was to blame."There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor," he wrote in a Twitter post.Trump, a Republican, has previously blamed California officials for fires and threatened to withhold funding, saying the state should do more to remove rotten trees and other debris that fuel blazes.State officials have blamed climate change and say many of the burn areas have been in federally-managed lands."Our focus is on the Californians impacted by these fires and the first responders and firefighters working around the clock to save lives and property - not on the President's inane and uninformed tweets," Evan Westrub, a spokesman for California Governor Jerry Brown said in an email.(Reporting by Stephen Lam in Paradise; Additional reporting by Alex Dobuzinskis and Dan Whitcomb in Los Angeles, Brendan O'Brien in Milwaukee, and Andrew Hay in Taos, New Mexico; Writing by Dan Whitcomb; Editing by Chizu Nomiyama and Marguerita Choy)
New normal' ferocious winds whip up deadly California fires-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Stephen Lam-November 11, 2018
PARADISE, Calif. (Reuters) - Two deadly wildfires fueled by "devil winds" tore through opposite ends of California on Sunday, with residents urged to heed evacuation orders by officials forced to leave their own homes. In northern California, the Camp Fire is one of the deadliest and most destructive in the state's history, killing at least 23 since it broke out on Thursday northeast of Sacramento and consumed much of the mountain town of Paradise. More than 100 were reported missing.Hundreds of miles to the south, at least two people died in the Woolsey conflagration threatening the wealthy beach community of Malibu, near Los Angeles.Looting was reported in the southern fire area and arrests were made, police reported.Hot dry winds expected to blow until Tuesday whipped up the flames and heightened the urgency of evacuation orders, officials said."We are entering a new normal. The rate of spread is exponentially more than it used to be," said Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen, noting at a press conference that California's fires in 2018 grow far more quickly than they did even 10 years ago.Several officials urged residents to heed evacuation orders, noting they themselves had followed orders to leave their homes for safety."Winds are already blowing. They are going to blow for the next three days. Your house can be rebuilt but you can't bring your life back," said Chief Daryl Osby of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.Crews pushed forward to achieve 25 percent containment of the Camp Fire in northern California, which had burned 109,000 acres (44,000 hectares) at the edge of the Plumas National Forest, according to Cal Fire's website. In Southern California, where the Woolsey Fire scorched 83,275 acres, the blaze was only 10 percent contained. The Camp Fire burned down more than 6,700 homes and businesses in Paradise, more structures than any other California wildfire on record, and the death toll, which could rise, also makes it one of the deadliest.Only the Griffith Park Fire in 1933 and Tunnel Fire in 1991 have claimed more lives.Several of the bodies discovered earlier this week were found in or near burned out cars, police have said. The flames descended on Paradise so fast that many people were forced to abandon their vehicles and run for their lives down the only road through the mountain town.More than 110 people were reported missing in the fire-scorched area.Winds of up to 40 miles per hour (64 km per hour) were forecast to blow in the north and gusts of up to 70 mph (113 kph), the so-called Santa Ana "devil wind," were expected in Southern California. The Woolsey Fire doubled in size from Friday night into Sunday threatening thousands of homes after triggering mandatory evacuation orders for a quarter million people in the upscale beach city as well as other communities in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.Governor Jerry Brown asked U.S. President Donald Trump to declare a major disaster to bolster the emergency response and help residents recover."We're putting everything we've got into the fight against these fires and this request ensures communities on the front lines get additional federal aid," Brown's letter said.Trump, on a trip to France, said in a Twitter post early Sunday, "With proper Forest Management, we can stop the devastation constantly going on in California. Get Smart!"The Republican president has previously blamed California officials for fires and threatened to withhold funding, saying the state should do more to remove rotten trees and other debris that fuel blazes.State officials have blamed climate change and said many of the burn areas have been in federally managed lands.(Reporting by Stephen Lam in Paradise; Additional reporting by Alex Dobuzinskis, Dan Whitcomb and Dana Feldman in Los Angeles, Rich McKay in Atlanta, Barbara Goldberg in New York, and David Shepardson in Washington; Editing by Alexandra Hudson, Lisa Shumaker and Andrea Ricci)
Five die in California wildfires, 150,000 forced to flee-Residents who managed to escape post harrowing videos to social media as they drive through tunnels of swirling smoke and orange flames-By AFP-TOI-NOV 11,18
PARADISE, United States — Five people were declared dead and 150,000 evacuated Friday as fierce wildfires raged across the western US state of California, with one rapidly spreading blaze threatening the famed resort of Malibu. The victims died in their vehicles trying to escape a massive late-season inferno in the northern California town of Paradise, where the entire population of 26,000 was ordered to leave, officials said.“The preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were located in vehicles that were overcome by the Camp Fire,” said a statement by the Butte County Sheriff’s Department, adding that they had yet to be identified.Dozens of other people were reported missing.Residents who managed to escape Paradise posted harrowing videos to social media as they drove through tunnels of swirling smoke and orange flames to outrun the wildfire in the Butte County town, north of Sacramento. The fast-moving Camp Fire has been fanned by strong winds to scorch 20,000 acres (8,093 hectares) and has not been contained, the California Fire Department (Cal Fire) said. The flames destroyed hundreds of homes, a hospital, a gas station, several restaurants and numerous vehicles in Paradise, officials said.An AFP photographer on the scene saw houses enveloped in flames, while others had already been reduced to ashes and cars burned to husks.Authorities issued mandatory evacuation orders for more than 50,000 people in the scenic area in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, including some residents of Chico, population 93,000, near Paradise.“The magnitude of destruction we have seen is really unbelievable and heartbreaking and our hearts go to everybody who has been affected by this,” said Mark Ghilarducci, the director of the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.California Governor-elect Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency to provide assistance to the fire-hit areas.A Cal Fire spokesman said around 2,000 buildings were believed to have been razed in Paradise. Among those evacuated were all of the patients at the Feather River Hospital in Paradise.More than 2,200 firefighters were battling the blaze, backed up by helicopters and water tankers.“This was a rapidly moving fire,” Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told the Chico Enterprise-Record. “And it moved very, very quickly from a rather remote area to populated areas.”“The whole lower side of Paradise is totally engulfed in flames right now,” Kevin Winstead, a resident of nearby Magalia, told KIEM TV. “All of it is engulfed in flames right now.“Not one home will be left standing,” he said. “I’m devastated.”“We’re just hoping that our brand new home that we were hoping to move into tomorrow is not burned to the ground,” Winstead said. “We’re kind of all shaking right now.”Authorities said around 105,000 people had been evacuated in southern California. The “Woolsey Fire,” in Ventura County sparked evacuation orders for parts of the city of Thousand Oaks, where a Marine Corps veteran shot dead 12 people in a country music bar on Wednesday night. Some of the first responders who rushed to the scene of the second mass shooting in less than two weeks in the United States were also helping out with fire-related duties. The Ventura County Fire Department said the blaze had burned around 8,000 acres (3,237 hectares) and evacuation orders were issued for some 88,000 homes in Ventura County and neighboring Los Angeles County.“It is critical that residents pay close attention to evacuation orders,” the Los Angeles County Fire Department said on Twitter. “This is a very dangerous wind-driven fire.”The “Woolsey Fire” has jumped Highway 101 near the town of Agoura Hills and portions of the main coastal north-south artery have been shut down, triggering mandatory evacuations, including the entire city of Malibu. The resort is one of the most in-demand locations in California for Hollywood stars seeking privacy and luxury, and has been home to Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, Charlize Theron, Brad Pitt and a host of other celebrities.Reality TV star Kim Kardashian West, who lives just north of coastal Malibu in Calabasas, revealed on Instagram that she was forced to flee her home.“Just landed back home and had 1 hour to pack up & evacuate our home. I pray everyone is safe,” she said.Actress Alyssa Milano, one of Kardashian’s neighbors in Calabasas, wrote on Twitter that she was also evacuated.“Horses are finally safe. My children are safe. My home is in jeopardy but… everything with a heartbeat is safe,” she said.Director Guillermo del Toro revealed on Twitter that Bleak House, his museum of horror movie memorabilia was also in the path of the flames.
Floods kill 7 in Jordan, visitors seek high ground in ancient Petra-At least 4 swept away in torrential rains south of Amman, two weeks after 21 killed in Dead Sea flash floods; thousands evacuated from tourist city-By Karin Laub-TOI-11 November 2018
AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — Flash floods caused by heavy rain across Jordan killed seven people Friday and forced hundreds of tourists to seek higher ground in the kingdom’s ancient city of Petra, government officials and official media said.About two dozen people were hurt and dozens more evacuated from their homes in several locations in the kingdom, as flood waters rose rapidly.Amateur video posted online showed a powerful torrent rushing through the steep, narrow canyon through which visitors reach the Treasury, the main attraction of Petra, an ancient trading hub carved from rose-colored rock. The video showed several hundred visitors crowded on a patch of higher ground near the Treasury as local guides helped one woman through surging water toward safety.“We made it,” she shouted as she rejoined her group.Government spokeswoman Jumana Ghuneimat said two dozen people were injured and dozens more evacuated as homes were flooded in several locations. Elsewhere, rising water levels forced the closure of a desert highway.Friday’s floods came just two weeks after 21 people, many of them middle school students, were killed in a flash flood near the Jordanian shore of the Dead Sea. The education and tourism ministers resigned after the incident. The state news agency Petra initially quoted Ghuneimat as saying that four people were killed Friday. Hala Ahbar, a news site linked to Jordan’s military, later quoted her as saying the death toll had risen to seven, but did not provide details. After Dead Sea flooding two weeks ago killed 21 Jordanians, the country is facing today more intense flooding in Petra. An 11-year-old girl was killed, another girl was seriously injured and divers were searching for three other members of the family. In the Dabaa area, also south of Amman, two women and a girl were killed in the floods which also forced the closure of a desert highway. A large number of cars were stuck, Ghuneimat said. The spokeswoman said more than 3,600 tourists visited Petra on Friday, and that efforts were continuing to evacuate them.

Be he a god or a devil, we will accept him.And today, sadly, the world is indeed ready for such a man.
