Trump’s new justice chief assailed over anti-Mueller stance-Just two days after being named acting attorney general, Matthew Whitaker faced questions over his ability to fairly supervise Special Counsel’s investigation-By AFP-NOV 12,18
President Donald Trump’s new acting Justice Department chief Matthew Whitaker drew tough criticism Friday over his denial of Russia’s meddling in the 2016 elections and his past involvement in a company fined millions for bilking clients.Just two days after being named acting attorney general, the former federal prosecutor and TV commentator faced questions over his ability to fairly supervise Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia, given Whitaker’s proposal last year to starve Mueller of funding.Questions were also being asked about his role on the board of a patent marketing company fined $25 million last May to settle fraud allegations.Late Friday, the Wall Street Journal said the FBI — which is now under Whitaker — is conducting a criminal investigation of the company, World Patent Marketing Inc.And members of Congress said his appointment was unconstitutional, because he has never been confirmed for top office by the US Senate.“As an unconfirmed political appointee, Mr Whitaker has not been subject to the scrutiny that the Constitution requires to ensure that he has the character, integrity and ability to fulfil the grave responsibilities of this job,” top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer said in a letter addressed to Trump Friday.“These concerns are heightened by specific expressions of bias against the special counsel investigation that Mr Whitaker made just last year,” Schumer said.Whitaker was named to the powerful job Wednesday after Trump fired attorney general Jeff Sessions. His appointment was greeted by protests in different cities calling for the protection of the Mueller probe, which potentially threatens the president and his family. As Sessions’ chief of staff for barely one year, the 49-year-old lawyer and Republican operative is widely thought to have earned Trump’s nod for the top job for his opposition to the investigation. In radio and television interviews last year, Whitaker repeatedly supported Trump’s “illegal witch hunt” charge against the investigation.“The left is trying to sow this theory that essentially Russians interfered with the US election, which has been proven false,” Whitaker said in an interview with a conservative Christian broadcaster.“They are trying to suggest that essentially the Trump campaign had these deep ties into Russia, which is not true.”He subsequently attacked the investigation on CNN as too broad, saying — as Trump has — that Mueller has no business examining the finances and Russian ties of the president’s businesses. And he said the attorney general could kill the investigation by starving it of funding.Whitaker’s appointment came at a crucial moment. After staying quiet for two months ahead of last Tuesday’s midterm elections, Mueller is believed to be close to unveiling new indictments, possibly against former campaign consultant Roger Stone and Trump’s son Donald Jr.He has also been pressing to interview Trump on his 2016 campaign’s ties to Russia and allegations that he obstructed the investigation.Sessions angered Trump when he recused himself from overseeing the Mueller investigation. Whitaker has no such restriction — though some believe he should.Experts said he has the power to block Mueller from chasing investigative leads and issuing significant subpoenas — of Trump for example — and indictments.“Starting yesterday, it would have been possible that Whitaker could have been saying, ‘No, you can’t indict Donald Trump Jr. or whoever,'” no matter how strong the evidence, said Fordham University Law School Professor Andrew Kent.Whitaker’s appointment left many worried that Mueller could be shut down before he concludes his investigation.Republican Senate chief Mitch McConnell insisted the probe was not under threat and that Whitaker was only a “very interim” Justice head, while Trump weighs candidates for a permanent attorney general.Trump meanwhile rejected Democratic calls for Whitaker to recuse himself like Sessions, saying that his television comments did not disqualify him from high position. At the same time, Trump appeared to distance himself slightly from Whitaker, rejecting reports that they have met a number of times inside the White House.“I don’t know Matt Whitaker. He worked for attorney general Sessions,” Trump said.“He was very very highly thought of… It’s a shame that no matter who I put in, they go after them.”“The Russia investigation is a hoax… a phony hoax,” Trump added.
Thin ice for new acting AG? Trump says ‘I don’t know’ him-President’s comments come as Matthew Whitaker’s past business ties and remarks on special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation draw scrutiny-By Eric Tucker and Jonathan Lemire-TOI-NOV 12,18
WASHINGTON (AP) — Matthew Whitaker’s future at the helm of the Justice Department appeared uncertain at best Friday as President Donald Trump denied even knowing the man he had named acting attorney general just two days earlier. The Senate’s top Republican predicted a permanent replacement could be named soon for Whitaker, who is now overseeing the Trump-Russia probe. The comments from Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell came as Whitaker’s past business ties and remarks on special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation and other topics were drawing scrutiny from Democrats and ethics groups.Speaking to reporters Friday, Trump said, “I don’t know Matt Whitaker.” That contradicted Trump’s remarks on Fox News last month, when he called Whitaker “a great guy” and said, “I mean, I know Matt Whitaker.”McConnell, meanwhile, said, “I think this will be a very interim AG.” Another Republican senator, Susan Collins of Maine, said she was concerned by some of Whitaker’s past comments and called for legislation that would place limits on his ability to fire special counsel Mueller. That would include specifying that only a Senate-confirmed Justice Department official — which Whitaker is not — could dismiss Mueller.Whitaker, a Republican Party loyalist and chief of staff to just-ousted Attorney General Jeff Sessions, was elevated Wednesday after his boss was forced from his job by Trump. The new position handed him oversight of Mueller’s investigation into possible ties between Russia and Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.Since Wednesday, Whitaker has faced pressure from Democrats to recuse himself from overseeing Mueller based on critical comments he made about the investigation before joining the Justice Department last year. Those included an op-ed article in which he said Mueller would be straying outside his mandate if he investigated Trump family finances and a radio interview in which he maintained there was no evidence of collusion between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign. He also tweeted an ex-prosecutor’s opinion piece that described a “Mueller lynch mob,” which he said was “worth a read.”There have also been reports about past comments questioning the power and reach of the federal judiciary, and about his ties to an invention-promotion company that was accused of misleading investors.Whitaker himself stayed out of the public debate Friday. He sent a department-wide note after his appointment in which he said, “As we move forward, I am committed to leading a fair Department with the highest ethical standards, that upholds the rule of law, and seeks justice for all Americans.”Legal scholars are debating the constitutionality of his appointment, with some lawyers saying it is illegal because he has not been confirmed by the Senate.Despite Trump’s current distancing himself from Whitaker, two Republicans close to the president said he had enjoyed Whitaker’s TV appearances and the two had struck a bond. Those TV appearances included one on CNN in which Whitaker suggested that the Mueller probe could be starved of resources.Trump told associates that he felt Whitaker would be “loyal” and would not have recused himself from the Russia probe as Sessions had done, according to the Republicans, who were not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations and commented only on condition of anonymity. On Friday, Trump said he had not spoken with Whitaker about Mueller’s investigation, which until now has been overseen by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.Rosenstein told reporters Friday that based on his experiences with Whitaker, “I think he’s a superb choice for attorney general.”Of the scrutiny Whitaker is facing, Trump said, “It’s a shame that no matter who I put in they go after.”“He was very, very highly thought of, and still is highly thought of, but this only comes up because anybody that works for me, they do a number on them,” Trump said.In Kentucky, meanwhile, McConnell said he expects Trump to nominate a new permanent attorney general “pretty quickly.” McConnell said he expects Whitaker to be “a very interim” appointee.“The president has said repeatedly he’s not going to dismiss the Mueller investigation,” McConnell told reporters at Kentucky’s Capitol. “He’s said repeatedly it’s going to be allowed to finish. That also happens to be my view.”Trump has not said whom he will nominate to permanently replace Sessions.Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is said to be a candidate, along with Labor Secretary Alex Acosta and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, among others.Trump told reporters he has not discussed the post with Christie, who he said was “a friend of mine” and “a good man.”
Analysis-Possibility of Gaza war in balance, as IDF troops caught in gunfight with Hamas-Israeli sources dispute Hamas claim that Israeli special forces were sent to kill senior commander, say the troops were on a less dramatic operation when exposed-By TOI staff-NOV 11,18
As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cut short a trip to Paris late Sunday and headed home following an outbreak of fighting in Gaza during a raid by Israeli special forces, the possibility, but not the certainty, of another Israel-Hamas war loomed.Hamas claimed that the late Sunday fighting was sparked by an assassination raid by Israeli special forces, in which Nour Baraka, the commander of Hamas’s tunneling forces in the Khan Younis area, was killed. Five other Hamas terrorists were also reported dead.Of the six, three were killed on the ground, and three in Israeli strikes. However, initial reports based on Israeli military sources said the special forces raid, three kilometers into Gaza, was not an assassination operation, noting that Israel has not targeted terror chiefs in Gaza for assassination of late.Indeed, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been seeking to seal an agreement to achieve calm on the Gaza, including by allowing the influx of $15 million in cash from Qatar to pay salaries for Palestinian officials there.Rather, the initial Israeli reports indicated, the special forces action was a more routine undercover operation, which had been completed without gunfire when the Israeli unit was spotted, identified and intercepted. It was then that the exchanges of fire broke out, as Israel sought to extricate its forces, the initial reports indicated.Netanyahu, these first reports also noted, would not have been likely to have flown to Paris, as he did for Sunday’s World War I centenary events, were a high-risk assassination raid about to unfold, necessitating his hurried return home.Aspects of the Gaza flare-up remained subject to military censorship late Sunday, although the IDF did move quickly to state that, contrary to rumor, no Israeli soldiers had been kidnapped in the fighting.School was cancelled Monday for residents of Israeli communities near Gaza, but Israeli officials indicated that the situation might be reassessed overnight. Everything would depend, military sources said late Sunday, on how Hamas decided to respond to the deaths of six of its members in an incident that left Israel and Gaza poised between the possibility of an agreement for calm and the prospect of war.At time of writing, Hamas had fired nine rockets into Israel, at least two of which were intercepted by the Iron Dome defense system.
Florida deja vu as state election hit by chaos, fraud accusations-Race recounts loom amid accusations of corruption and voting discrepancies; ‘what’s going on in Florida is a disgrace,’ Trump says-By Michael Mathes-TOI-12 November 2018
WASHINGTON — Florida has made a disturbing return to the election spotlight 18 years after the drama that launched George W Bush’s presidency, as the state braces for race recounts amid accusations of corruption and voting discrepancies. Two races in the southeastern state, for governor and US Senate, hung in the balance Friday, three days after the contentious midterm elections that saw Democrats seize control of the House of Representatives from President Donald Trump’s Republicans. Most US political races have already been settled. But Florida’s ballot chaos — rife with intrigue and Trump’s accusation of abuse by officials in Democrat-heavy counties — raises fresh questions about why the world’s most powerful democracy is incapable of producing swift and accurate election results across all 50 states.Florida is not alone. In neighboring Georgia, the Democratic candidate for governor initiated legal action to ensure all votes were counted in her contest. In Arizona, hundreds of thousands of ballots were still left to be counted in a fierce battle for the Senate as Kyrsten Sinema — currently a Democratic congresswoman — edged ahead of Martha McSally, a Republican congresswoman.Florida’s Governor Rick Scott, the Republican challenging incumbent Senate Democrat Bill Nelson, filed a lawsuit against two election officials alleging fraud after his lead narrowed. His race, and the one for governor, appear headed for mandatory recounts, which could delay a final outcome for days or weeks.“The people of Florida deserve fairness and transparency,” Scott told reporters.“Every Floridian should be concerned there may be rampant fraud happening in Palm Beach and Broward Counties.”Scott said he was ordering an official investigation into his own race. With the developments raising partisan tensions to fresh highs, Trump weighed in to allege a major corruption scandal was brewing, while fellow Republican Marco Rubio of Florida accused Democrats of a coordinated effort to “steal the election.”“What’s going on in Florida is a disgrace,” Trump told reporters.Scott “easily won, but every hour it seems to be going down,” he said of Scott’s lead which on Friday stood at 14,999 votes out of 8.2 million cast, a margin of just 0.18 percent.“If you look at Broward County, they have had a horrible history,” Trump added, referring to a Democrat-heavy county where officials were slowly counting votes including absentee and provisional ballots.-537 votes-Broward was at the heart of Florida’s bitter legal brawls in 2000. That year’s recounts in Broward and other counties were halted by the US Supreme Court, and George W. Bush defeated Al Gore by 537 votes in Florida, giving him the edge in the electoral college and handing him the White House.Scott’s lawsuits alleged a lack of transparency over the counting process and asked that further details be made public.Rancor was spilling into governors’ races, where Andrew Gillum in Florida and Stacey Abrams in Georgia were aiming to become the states’ first African-American leaders, but the contests were tilting in favor of their Republican rivals.Unofficial results show Gillum trailing Ron DeSantis, a Trump-endorsed Republican, by just 36,165 votes, or 0.44 percentage points.State law mandates a recount if the difference in a race is within 0.5 percent. If the margin is within 0.25 percent, as it stood in the Senate race, a hand recount — slower and more thorough than by machine — is ordered.-Highly irresponsible-David Lublin, a professor of government at American University, dismissed suggestions that corruption was to blame, and said the latest statements by Trump and Scott “are highly irresponsible.”Broward County officials were simply taking deliberative steps to count all ballots, including absentee and provisional ones, he said.“The good news is that since the 2000 election, the process has improved both in terms of how people vote in Florida and the designation of a recount,” he said. And yet unusual voting discrepancies were being reported in Broward. The South Florida Sun Sentinel said it analyzed voting patterns and found that of Broward ballots already counted, thousands made the unlikely choice of voting in lower-profile contests like for agriculture commissioner, but not for Senate, the marquee race on the ballot. The unusual pattern appeared in no other Florida county, the newspaper reported.Experts including lawyer Lawrence Norden have turned to a possible flaw with the ballot’s design.“If this is the cause of lost votes, it is incredibly frustrating that somehow the state hasn’t gotten its act together to make sure ballots are designed in a way that don’t cause lost votes,” he told the Sentinel.
Florida orders vote recount in Senate, governor races-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-November 12, 2018
(Reuters) - Florida will hold a machine recount of votes in its neck-and-neck races for the U.S. Senate and governor, officials said on Saturday, setting up a days-long wait for closure in two of the most closely-watched contests of the midterm elections. Results of the recount are due by 3 p.m. (2000 GMT) Thursday for the two races, which along with those for governor in Georgia and for the U.S. Senate in Arizona, are the most high-profile contests still undecided after Tuesday's vote. The drama echoed the 2000 presidential vote recount that took place in Florida, with both sides alleging foul play and sending lawyers to the Sunshine State. In Florida's election for the U.S. Senate, Republican Governor Rick Scott had seen his lead narrow over incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Bill Nelson to about 12,500 votes, or 0.15 percent, by Saturday evening.Scott urged every sheriff in the state to watch for any violations during the recount process and to take appropriate actions."We will not let unethical liberals steal this election!" Scott wrote on Twitter. "It's time Senator Nelson accepts these results and allows the state of Florida to move forward to a better future."Nelson said his campaign would continue taking action to ensure every vote is counted without interference or efforts to undermine the democratic process."We believe when every legal ballot is counted we'll win this election," Nelson said in a statement. In the gubernatorial contest, Republican Ron DeSantis' lead over Democrat Andrew Gillum winnowed to about 33,700 votes, or 0.41 percent.DeSantis said in a video statement that the results were "clear and unambiguous, just as they were on election night," and that he was honored by the trust Floridians placed in him."It is important that everyone involved in the election process strictly adhere to the rule of law which is the foundation for our nation," DeSantis said.Gillum, who is trying become Florida's first African-American governor, told reporters his team has organized a cadre of hundreds of volunteers and lawyers to move across the state and fight against voter suppression and for a fair count."Let me say clearly: I am replacing my words of concession with an uncompromised and unapologetic call that we count every vote," Gillum said at a news conference.-ECHOES OF 2000 RECOUNT-Accusations of fraud and lawsuits have emerged over the Florida contests in recent days, conjuring memories of the state's 2000 presidential vote recount. In that election, the winner of the White House hung in the balance for weeks before the U.S. Supreme Court stopped the counting and Republican George W. Bush triumphed over Democrat Al Gore.President Donald Trump has accused Democratic election officials in Florida's Broward and Palm Beach Counties of corruption, without providing any evidence."Trying to STEAL two big elections in Florida! We are watching closely!" Trump wrote on Twitter on Saturday during a visit to France.Scott has filed lawsuits against Democratic election supervisors in the two counties, accusing them of violating election law and demanding access to their vote tallies.Nelson also filed a motion in federal court asking that provisional and absentee ballots not be rejected because election officials deem that the signatures do not match voters' signatures on file.Trump has noted the involvement of Nelson's lawyer, Marc Elias, a Washington-based Democrat who represented Hillary Clinton during her 2016 presidential race, describing him on Twitter as the Democrats' "best election stealing lawyer."Elias has had a role in many of the nation's most prominent recounts. After the machine recount results are delivered, Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner will order manual recounts if two candidates are separated by 0.25 percent of the vote or less. The recounts and possible legal challenges mean it could be weeks until a winner is determined in either race.In Tuesday's elections, Democrats won a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives after eight years in the minority, while Republicans expanded their two-seat advantage in the Senate.(Reporting by Daniel Wallis; Additional reporting by Timothy Gardner in Washington; Editing by Chizu Nomiyama and Marguerita Choy)
European police smash ring smuggling Palestinians with ‘bogus asylum claims’-Officers arrest 9 people in Spain and France accused of charging $9,000 per person to provide Palestinians with faked versions of travel documents issued to refugees in Lebanon-By AFP-12 November 2018
MADRID, Spain — Police in Spain and France have smashed a criminal ring suspected of smuggling hundreds of Palestinians into Europe through fraudulent asylum claims, Spanish police said Sunday.Officers arrested nine people, including the suspected leader of the network, in the two countries as part of the operation carried out with European police agency Europol, a Spanish police statement said.Police suspect that since January 2018 the group flew around 1,200 Palestinians living in Middle Eastern countries via Bolivia to Madrid, where they would then make a “fraudulent asylum request.”“Instead of continuing with the administrative procedures related to their asylum request, they were transported by the organization to Belgium and Germany in minivans,” the statement said. The ring charged around 8,000 euros ($9,000) per person to provide them with fake travel documents and organize the trip, earning at least 9 million euros ($10.2 million) with the scheme.Five people were arrested in Spain and four in France.Police said the group’s “main base of operations” was in the northern French city of Amiens.Spanish police started their investigation after detecting an increase in the number of Palestinians requesting asylum at Madrid airport.

Death toll rises to 23 in California wildfire after 14 bodies found-[Reuters]-By Stephen Lam-YAHOONEWS-November 11, 2018
PARADISE, Calif. (Reuters) - The charred remains of 14 more people have been found in and around a Northern California town overrun by flames from a massive wildfire, officials said on Saturday, raising the death toll to at least 23.The bodies were recovered in and around Paradise, a mountain community some 90 miles (145 km) north of Sacramento that has been left devastated by the Camp Fire, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Scott Maclean said.Maclean said no details were immediately available about the circumstances of the deaths and that the victims' badly burned condition would make identification difficult. The Camp Fire burned down more than 6,700 homes and businesses in Paradise, more structures than any other California wildfire on record, and the death toll, which could still rise, also makes it one of the deadliest.Only the Griffith Park Fire in 1933 and Tunnel Fire in 1991 have claimed more lives.Several of the bodies discovered earlier this week were found in or near burned out cars, police have said. The flames descended on Paradise so fast that many people were forced to abandon their vehicles and run for their lives down the sole road through the mountain town.An additional 35 people have been reported missing and three firefighters have been injured. It was not immediately clear if any of the missing were among those found dead.As of Saturday afternoon, the Camp Fire had blackened more than 100,000 acres (40,500 hectares) at the edge of the Plumas National Forest. Crews had cut containment lines around about 20 percent of the blaze.About 500 miles (800 km) to the south, the Woolsey Fire burning in the foothills above Malibu doubled in size over Friday night into Saturday, threatening thousands of homes after triggering mandatory evacuation orders for a quarter million people in the upscale beach city as well as other communities in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The fire has destroyed at least 177 homes and other structures with a full count still under way, and has now charred more than 83,000 acres as of late Saturday, officials said in a release."Our firefighters have been facing some extreme, tough fire conditions that they said that they've never seen in their lives," said Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby.TWO BODIES FOUND IN MALIBU-He said crews hoped to take advantage of a lull on Saturday in the fierce Santa Ana winds driving the flames, but that gusts could return on Sunday. All 13,000 residents of Malibu, which is 30 miles west of downtown Los Angeles, were told to get out on Friday. Two bodies were discovered in the community on Saturday but it was too early to determine if they died from the Woolsey fire or another cause, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials said.Firefighters took advantage of a lull in winds on Saturday to build containment lines around five percent of the conflagration but warned that gusts were expected to pick up again on Sunday. The Woolsey Fire broke out on Thursday in Ventura County near Los Angeles and quickly jumped the 101 Freeway, a major north-south artery, in several places. On Friday, it crossed the Santa Monica Mountains toward Malibu, where flames driven by wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour (80 kph) raced down hillsides and through canyons toward multi-million dollar homes.Early on Saturday, flames approached Malibu's Pepperdine University, a private residential college with 7,700 students, where many remained sheltered on the main campus.School officials told the students that they have been assured by fire officials that the university's buildings were built to withstand fire.Among those forced to flee the Malibu area were celebrities including Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian, who said on Twitter that flames had damaged the home she shares in nearby Calabasas with Kanye West.In Ventura County, most of the town of Thousand Oaks was ordered evacuated, adding to the anguish days after a gunman killed 12 people in a shooting rampage at a bar.President Donald Trump, weighing in on the emergency during a trip to France, said early on Saturday that "gross mismanagement of forests" was to blame."There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor," he wrote in a Twitter post.Trump, a Republican, has previously blamed California officials for fires and threatened to withhold funding, saying the state should do more to remove rotten trees and other debris that fuel blazes.State officials have blamed climate change and say many of the burn areas have been in federally-managed lands."Our focus is on the Californians impacted by these fires and the first responders and firefighters working around the clock to save lives and property - not on the President's inane and uninformed tweets," said Evan Westrub, a spokesman for California Governor Jerry Brown.(Reporting by Stephen Lam in Paradise; Additional reporting by Alex Dobuzinskis and Dan Whitcomb in Los Angeles, and Brendan O'Brien in Milwaukee and Rich McKay in Atlanta; Writing by Dan Whitcomb; Editing by Chizu Nomiyama, Marguerita Choy and Daniel Wallis)
Massive California fires destroy town, Malibu ordered to evacuate-Northern California blaze quadruples in size, levels Paradise, a town of 30,000; other fires rage near Los Angeles-By Don Thompson and Jocelyn Gecker-TOI-9 November 2018
PARADISE, Calif. (AP) — A wildfire that moved so fast that firefighters couldn’t hope to stop it quadrupled in size Friday after destroying several thousand buildings and leveling much of a Northern California town of nearly 30,000 people, authorities said.Only a day after it began, the fire near the town of Paradise had grown to nearly 110 square miles (285 square kilometers).“There was really no firefight involved,” said Capt. Scott McLean of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, explaining that crews gave up on attacking the flames and instead helped people evacuate. “These firefighters were in the rescue mode all day yesterday.”The entire town was ordered evacuated, setting off a desperate exodus in which many motorists got struck in gridlocked traffic and abandoned their cars to flee foot. People in Paradise reported seeing much of the community go up in flames, including homes, supermarkets, businesses, restaurants, schools and a retirement center.“We were surrounded by fire. We were driving through fire on each side of the road,” police officer Mark Bass said.On Friday, the massive blaze spread north, prompting officials to order the evacuation of Stirling City and Inskip, two communities north of Paradise along the Sierra Nevada foothills. The wind-driven blaze also spread to the west and reached the edge of Chico, a city of 90,000 people. Firefighters were able to stop the flames at the edge of the city, where evacuation orders remained in place Friday, said Cal Fire Cpt. Bill Murphy said. The winds calmed down in the valley, but they were still shifting and erratic, with speeds of up to 45 mph (72 kph) along ridge tops, he said.In Paradise, Bass evacuated his family and then returned to the fire to help rescue several disabled residents, including a man trying to carry his bedridden wife to safety.“It was just a wall of fire on each side of us, and we could hardly see the road in front of us,” Bass said.McLean estimated that several thousand buildings were lost in Paradise, about 180 miles (290 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco.“Pretty much the community of Paradise is destroyed. It’s that kind of devastation,” he said.Wildfires also erupted in Southern California.About two-thirds of the city of Malibu was ordered evacuated early Friday as a ferocious Southern California’s wildfire roared toward the beachside community that is home for many Hollywood celebrities. The Los Angeles County Fire Department tweeted that the fire raging through the Santa Monica Mountains was headed to the ocean. Malibu has about 13,000 residents and lies along 21 miles (34 kilometers) of coast at the southern foot of the mountain range.“Imminent threat!” the department said in its warning. The fires erupted Thursday near the northwest corner of the city of Los Angeles as the region’s notorious Santa Ana winds gusted, triggering overnight evacuations of an estimated 75,000 homes in western Los Angeles County and eastern Ventura County. The fire then pushed southward, jumped the wide US 101 freeway before dawn Friday and pushed into the Santa Monica range.Another fire was burning farther west in Ventura County, also moving toward the ocean. The National Weather Service issued extreme fire danger warnings in many areas of the state, saying low humidity and strong winds were expected to continue through the evening. The fire in Paradise was reported shortly after daybreak Thursday. In the midst of the chaos, officials said they could not provide figures on the number of wounded, but County Cal Fire Chief Darren Read said that at least two firefighters and multiple residents were injured.“It’s a very dangerous and very serious situation,” Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said. “We’re working very hard to get people out. The message I want to get out is: If you can evacuate, you need to evacuate.” Several evacuation centers were set up in nearby towns.Residents described fleeing their homes and getting stuck in traffic jams as the flames sparked explosions and toppled utility poles.“Things started exploding,” resident Gina Oviedo said. “People started getting out of their vehicles and running.”Many abandoned their cars and trucks on the side of the road.“They were abandoned because traffic was so bad, backed up for hours,” Bass said.Thick gray smoke and ash filled the sky above Paradise and could be seen from miles away.“It was absolutely dark,” said resident Mike Molloy, who said he made a decision based on the wind to leave Thursday morning, packing only the minimum and joining a sea of other vehicles.Concerned friends and family posted frantic messages on Twitter and other sites saying they were looking for loved ones, particularly seniors who lived at retirement homes or alone.Chico police officer John Barker and his partner evacuated several elderly people from an apartment complex.“Most of them were immobile, with walkers or spouses that were bed-ridden, so we were trying to get additional units to come and try and help us, just taking as many as we could,” he said. He described the community as having a lot of elderly residents, some with no vehicles.Kelly Lee called shelters looking for her husband’s 93-year-old grandmother, Dorothy Herrera, who was last heard from Thursday morning. Herrera, who lives in Paradise with her 88-year-old husband, Lou, left a frantic voicemail at around 9:30 a.m. saying they needed to get out.“We never heard from them again,” Lee said. “We’re worried sick. … They do have a car, but they both are older and can be confused at times.”

Islamic State claims responsibility for deadly Melbourne stabbing-Police say Somali-born assailant ignited his vehicle loaded with gas canisters in city’s downtown and began to knife passers-by-By AFP-TOI-12 November 2018
MELBOURNE, Australia — The Islamic State jihadist group on Friday claimed the rush-hour stabbing spree carried out by a Somali immigrant who killed one person and wounded two others in the heart of Australia’s second largest city.Police labelled the stabbing a “terrorist event,” and said the unnamed man drove a 4×4 truck loaded with gas bottles into the bustling city center of Melbourne, ignited the vehicle in a ball of flames and then attacked passers-by with a knife. He stabbed three people before being confronted by armed officers who eventually shot him in the chest. One victim died at the scene and the attacker died later in hospital.Counter-terrorism police and intelligence officers are still piecing together how the incident occurred, but said the attacker was known to intelligence services.Islamic State — which often claims responsibility for such attacks — said via its propaganda arm that the perpetrator was an “Islamic State fighter and carried out the operation.”Witness footage showed police struggling for at least a minute to corral the towering man — who was wearing a dark tunic — as he lunged, slashed and stabbed wildly at two officers. At least two members of the public bravely stepped in to help police. One man was armed with a cafe chair while another — swiftly dubbed an “Aussie hero” on social media — repeatedly tried to ram the suspect with an empty metal shopping cart. But the attacks continued unabated before one officer opted for lethal force, shooting the suspect in the chest.“We are now treating this as a terrorism event,” said Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton, who said the suspect was “someone that is known” to police through family connections. The unnamed assailant was said to reside in Melbourne’s northwestern suburbs, but had come to Australia from Somalia in or around the 1990s, when the country was ravaged by a civil war.Witness Chris Newport, 60, described how he first heard a loud noise and saw a truck on fire, rolling across the tram tracks before a second, louder bang.“He was holding a knife and running around the place,” he said of the attacker.“Someone had a shopping trolley and was trying to stop him. Two police turned up really quickly, but there was only a couple of them. He started to go at them and there was a loud bang — they shot him,” he told AFP.The police officers are being treated for cuts and scrapes and are not thought to be in a serious condition.-Double blow for city-The police chief refused to give more details due to the ongoing investigation, but the authorities will face inevitable questions about how someone known to the intelligence services nonetheless managed to carry out an attack. The counter-terrorism command has taken a lead role in the investigation and police have set up a three-block-wide exclusion zone.Video taken in #BourkeStreet shows a man attacking police. @VictoriaPolice say they responded to a car fire on the corner of Bourke and Swanston streets after 4pm. A man was arrested at the scene.More here: https://t.co/SLKuUflTQt-???? via @fayfayang pic.twitter.com/ZbtgxPvxcc— ABC Melbourne (@abcmelbourne) November 9, 2018-Officers said they “are not looking for anyone further at this early stage” and there was no immediate evidence of an ongoing threat related to the attack.Forensic investigators combed through the scene late Friday, where the dead victim’s body lay covered in a white plastic sheet.Melbourne is Australia’s second largest city, a cosmopolitan metropolis of almost five million people famed for its cafes, bars, restaurants and high standard of living.Friday’s attack is a double blow for the city as it coincides with an ongoing murder trial of 28-year-old James Gargasoulas, accused of ploughing his car into crowds in the same area in 2017, killing six people. But the situation away from the immediate crime scene quickly returned to normal, with Melbournians enjoying a spring evening meal or a drink with friends.State Premier Daniel Andrews described the attack as “evil” but said the city would not be bowed.Government sources say Australia has been the target of around a dozen terror plots in recent years. Few have been successful, sophisticated or caused mass casualties, but this latest attack is sure to fuel the already heated debate over migration.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
