UNESCO defangs anti-Israel texts, drawing praise and a single ‘strange’ jeer-Non-binding decisions were result of Israeli-Arab negotiations, but Israel’s envoy to UN slams move as proof of agency’s ‘lies and biases’-By Raphael Ahren-TOI-OCT 10,18

The Executive Board of UNESCO on Wednesday passed two decisions critical of Israel, but did it in a way meant to answer some of Jerusalem’s concerns; while the cultural agency celebrated the move a sign of “goodwill,” Israel’s ambassador to the UN still slammed it as further proof of the organization’s “lies and biases” against the Jewish state. The two texts on “Occupied Palestine” sharply criticized Israel — called the “occupying power” throughout — for various policies vis-a-vis the Palestinians. For instance, Decision 28 deeply “deplores the ongoing military developments around the Gaza Strip and their heavy toll of civilian casualties” and refers to the Tomb of the Patriarchs in the Old City of Hebron “an integral part of the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”Decision 29 says UNESCO’s Executive Board is deeply “concerned by the Israeli army violations against Palestinian universities and schools” and refers to the Golan Heights as occupied Syrian territory. However, rather than put them before a contentious vote that would still pass, the body shuffled the texts into a non-binding annex which was approved by consensus, a mechanism that Israel has cheered in the past as a diplomatic achievement. In April, after two resolutions were accepted in the same way as part of a compromise solution, Israel’s ambassador to UNESCO said the mood was “like a wedding.”Since October 2017, when Israeli, American, and Arab diplomats agreed to postpone votes on these controversial resolutions, 12 decisions on “Occupied Palestine” have been agreed upon after negotiations between Israel on one hand and the Palestinian and Jordanian delegation on the other, the agency said Wednesday.“I would like to commend the spirit of dialogue and the sense of responsibility that led to this result,” UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said Wednesday. “A trend towards consensus is now emerging. It is based on the presence of all parties around the table at UNESCO and, of course, on their goodwill.”Audrey, who took over UNESCO’s helm in October 2017, mere hours after the US and Israel announced their withdrawal from the organization, is said to have worked to combat the cultural body’s ongoing politicization in a bid to convince the two countries to reconsider.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu considered attending a UNESCO event and meeting Azoulay last month in at the UN General Assembly New York, but surprisingly turned down the invitation, citing the agency’s “persistent and egregious bias against Israel.”According to reports, Netanyahu backed out of the event because he did not want to anger the United States, which has taken a hard line with UNESCO.On Wednesday, Azoulay indicated that the consensual passing of the two decision on “Occupied Palestine” had Jerusalem’s blessing.“I wish to thank those who have worked to achieve this, especially the representatives of the Palestinian, Israeli, and Jordanian delegations, and all members of the Executive Board who supported this agreement, as well as the European Union,” she said in a statement.“More broadly, this result should encourage all Member States to work together, in a spirit of unity, even on the most difficult objectives,” she added. In April 2017, Israel’s then-ambassador to UNESCO, Carmel Shama Hacohen, celebrated the arrangement to pass anti-Israel resolutions in non-binding annexes without a vote as a major achievement in the Jewish state’s battle against the automatic Arab majority in international bodies.“I’m more than happy” with the outcome, he said at the time.Shama Hacohen has since left Paris and has been replaced by a career diplomat for the remainder of Israel’s membership in UNESCO. As it stands now, Israel will leave the organization on December 31.Lies and biases’-The Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem declined to comment on Wednesday’s measures.Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon, however, slammed the passing of the two decisions. “This is further evidence, for anyone who did not understand why the United States and Israel withdrew from UNESCO, that again proves that UNESCO is a body based on lies and biases, and is deliberately acting against us,” he said in a statement.“The State of Israel will not be a member of an organization that is trying to rewrite history and willing to be manipulated by our enemies.”Danon’s statement was odd given Jerusalem’s apparent blessing and the fact that UNESCO used the non-voting mechanism in an effort to satisfy Israel.A diplomatic source in UNESCO on Wednesday said he failed to understand why Danon would attack an arrangement that Israeli diplomats had negotiated to achieve. An Israeli diplomat entered the UNESCO secretariat and okayed the text, before the Palestinian and Jordanian delegations entered the room and also signed off on the deal, the source said.“It’s really strange,” he said, speaking to The Times of Israel on condition of anonymity. “It’s also very problematic, because if he’s representing Israel, he should know what’s going on.”Danon might have misunderstood what happened on Wednesday in Paris, and will surely soon issue a clarification of his remarks, the source added.Danon’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday night.Under Azoulay, UNESCO has made major efforts to mediate between Israel and the Arab countries sponsoring resolutions on the Middle East, in a bid to convince Jerusalem and Washington to reconsider their decision to withdraw from the organization, the source said, questioning Israel’s decision to leave the body.“Our new path, the path of mediation and negotiation, lessens the tensions that existed before Azoulay came onboard. The question then can be asked what interest do the Israelis or the Americans have in quitting?”

Russian, Israeli leaders say ‘business as usual’ after plane crash, S-300 spat-Moscow’s Deputy PM Maxim Akimov strikes positive tone at event in Jerusalem to launch Israel-Russia Chamber of Commerce-By Sue Surkes-TOI-10 October 2018

Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov and a delegation of Russian businessman conveyed a strong message of “business as usual” in Jerusalem on Tuesday, less than a month after Syrian forces responding to an Israeli airstrike mistakenly shot down a Russian military reconnaissance plane, killing all 15 crew members on board and igniting tensions between Russia and Israel.Blaming Israel for the incident, Russia recently delivered the S-300 anti-aircraft system to Syria which Israel and the US fear could complicate ongoing Israeli efforts to prevent Iran from deepening its military presence in Syria and transferring weapons to the Lebanon-based terror organization, Hezbollah.Akimov, who serves as deputy prime minister for transportation, communications and digital economy, told reporters at the launch of the Israel-Russia Chamber of Commerce that “in our very complicated world,” countries which maintain relationships with one another can sometimes have “a different view of a global problem.”The downing of the plane was a “very difficult case for us,” he said, “but now we are concentrated on the economic and social agenda and I hope that maybe in future these additional measures and efforts could be discussed by the leaders of our states for further development of our political agenda.”He added that “now we feel the good spirit and very strong will of our leaders to continue cooperation in economic and social spheres and [they are] absolutely sure to continue political dialogue for [the] resolution of very complicated and difficult problem[s sic] in the Middle East.”Akimov said the two countries were already cooperating successfully in areas such as health care, industry, and pensions for elderly Russian immigrants in Israel, and that had “brilliant expectations” from and saw a “brilliant future” for the bilateral partnership. He cited Hadassah Hospital’s diagnostic center at Moscow’s International Medical Cluster in Skolkovo as an example of that cooperation.Environment and Jerusalem Affairs Minister Ze’ev Elkin spoke a few words of introduction for Akimov, thanking the Russian politician for the “wonderful atmosphere of cooperation.”Temur Ben-Yehuda (Khikhinashvili), a prominent Georgian-born, Moscow-based Russian-Israeli Jewish businessman, told the Times of Israel via a translator that while he could not comment on political issues, he hoped that the positive relationship between the two countries as reflected in growing trade figures would triumph over any “negative tendencies” of recent weeks. He said Russian trade with Israel reached $1.8 billion from January to August this year — a rise of 11 percent over the same period last year. The event took place at the end of the two-day 15th joint Russian-Israel intergovernmental committee of economic cooperation during which Akimov met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss collaboration in various fields.According to Ben-Yehuda, the atmosphere at the inter ministerial meetings — attended by some 60 Russian business people and officials — was “very positive — there was very much of a working atmosphere and a willingness on both sides for cooperation.”He said that Akimov and Elkin returned to the foreign affairs ministry “in a very good mood” after meeting with the Israeli prime minister, following “a very good meeting” in which they discussed opportunities for business cooperation in areas such as high-tech, agriculture, medical tourism to Israel, and tourism in general. The new Israel-Russia Chamber of Commerce — launched at the Biohouse, a hub for biomedical researchers on the capital’s Hadassah Hospital, Ein Karem campus — brought together health ministry officials and business people from both countries who are interested in cooperating on medical digitalization.Israeli companies exhibited products as varied as computer programs for digital sequencing of genetics, a monitoring system for the elderly, and medical cannabis solutions. The chamber of commerce forms the Israeli side of a partnership with the Russia-based Israel-Russia Business Council, which was set up several years ago.Ben-Yehuda heads the latter and will serve as president of the former. Lawyer Anna Moshe is chairman and CEO of the new chamber of commerce.

Trump crowd finds a new target to lock up: Feinstein-David KnowlesEditor-,Yahoo News-October 9, 2018

The chant was familiar, but its target was new.At a Tuesday rally in Council Bluffs, Iowa, President Trump took aim at Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., for her handling of a letter sent by Christine Blasey Ford that accused Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault more than three decades ago.The letter, in which Ford requested anonymity, leaked to the media, resulting in a contentious delay in Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the high court. At his rally, Trump put the blame for the leak on Feinstein.“How about Sen. Feinstein. That’s another beauty. That’s a beauty,” Trump said as his audience erupted into a chorus of boos. The president then did an impersonation of Feinstein and the other members on the Senate Judiciary Committee who discussed whether she had leaked Ford’s letter. “Did you leak the documents? Wha? Wha? No, I didn’t.”As Trump continued his re-creation of the exchange, his supporters started the chant that began in the 2016 campaign, when the enemy was Hillary Clinton. “Lock her up!”“And I think they’re talking about Feinstein, can you believe that?” Trump quipped. “Now was that the worst body language. In other words, did she leak it? A hundred percent. No, I don’t want to get sued — 99 percent. See now I can’t get… Now I can’t get sued.”During a hearing at which Ford and Kavanaugh both testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Feinstein addressed the claim that she was responsible for leaking the letter in an effort to torpedo Kavanaugh’s nomination.“President Trump and Senate Republicans are trying to deflect attention from Brett Kavanaugh’s sexual assault allegations by saying my staff or I leaked the letter from Dr. Christine Blasey Ford — they’re wrong,” Feinstein said.At the hearing, several Republicans accused her of just that, but Feinstein was resolute in her denials.“I honored Dr. Blasey Ford’s request for confidentiality,” Feinstein said. “It was only when reporters were knocking on her door that I referred the letter to the FBI. At no point did I or anyone on my staff divulge Dr. Blasey Ford’s name to the press. She knows that and believes it, for which I’m grateful.”In a speech last weekend announcing that she would support Kavanaugh’s nomination, Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said she was certain that Feinstein was not the leaker.“She is a person of integrity and I stand by her,” Collins said.Trump’s ire moved on quickly enough from Feinstein on Tuesday, and minutes later he recounted Clinton’s criticism of his remarks at Kavanaugh’s ceremonial swearing-in.“Lock her up!” the crowd chanted at the mention of Clinton’s name.

Life-threatening Category 4 Hurricane Michael roars into Florida panhandle-US authorities urge residents to ‘seek refuge immediately,’ brace for catastrophic damage as most powerful storm in recorded history to hit the area poised to make landfall-By JAY REEVES-TOI-10 October 2018

PANAMA CITY, United States (AP) — Michael’s leading edge careened onto northwest Florida’s white-sand beaches as a still-growing Category 4 hurricane Wednesday, lashing the coast with tropical storm-force winds and rain and pushing a storm surge that could cause catastrophic damage well inland once it makes landfall. The unexpected brute quickly sprang from a weekend tropical depression and grew to top winds of 145 mph (230 kph), the most powerful hurricane in recorded history for this stretch of the Florida coast. The sheriff in Panama City’s Bay County issued a shelter-in-place order before dawn Wednesday, and Florida Gov. Rick Scott tweeted that for people in the hurricane’s path, “the time to evacuate has come and gone … SEEK REFUGE IMMEDIATELY.”At 8 a.m., Michael’s eye was about 90 miles (145 kilometers) from Panama City and Apalachicola, moving relatively fast at 13 mph (21 kph). Tropical-storm force winds, extending 185 miles (295 kilometers) from the center, were already lashing the coast, and hurricane-force winds reached out 45 miles (75 kilometers) from the center. The storm now appears so powerful — with a central pressure dropping to 933 millibars — that it is expected to remain a hurricane as it moves over central Georgia early Thursday, and unleash damaging winds all the way into the Carolinas. Rainfall could reach up to a foot (30 centimeters), and the life-threatening storm surge could swell to 14 feet (4 meters).#HurricaneMichael, seen here by #GOESEast, strengthened to a Cat. 4 storm and is now approaching the Florida Panhandle. The @NHC_Atlantic warns that life-threatening storm surge, hurricane-force winds and heavy rainfall are imminent. Latest: https://t.co/duUUaOsfc5 pic.twitter.com/sOMwQeZGSl— NOAA Satellites (@NOAASatellites) October 10, 2018-“We are in new territory,” National Hurricane Center Meteorologist Dennis Feltgen wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday. “The historical record, going back to 1851, finds no Category 4 hurricane ever hitting the Florida panhandle.”Florida officials said more than 375,000 people up and down the Gulf Coast had been urged or ordered to evacuate.Only a skeleton staff remained at Tyndall Air Force Base, which is located on a peninsula just south of Panama City. The home to the 325th Fighter Wing and some 600 military families appeared squarely targeted for the worst of the storm’s fury, and leaders declared “HURCON 1” status, ordering all but essential personnel to evacuate. The base’s aircraft, which include F-22 Raptors, were flown hundreds of miles away as a precaution, a spokesman said in a statement.Evacuations spanned 22 counties from the Florida Panhandle into north central Florida. But civilians don’t have to follow orders, and authorities feared many have failed to heed their calls to get out of the way as the hard-charging storm intensified over Gulf of Mexico water.“I guess it’s the worst-case scenario. I don’t think anyone would have experienced this in the Panhandle,” meteorologist Ryan Maue of weathermodels.com told The Associated Press. “This is going to have structure-damaging winds along the coast and hurricane force winds inland.”Maue and other meteorologists watched in real time as a new government satellite showed the hurricane’s eye tightening, surrounded by lightning that lit it up “like a Christmas tree.”University of Georgia’s Marshall Shepherd, a former president of the American Meteorological Society, called it a “life-altering event,” writing on Facebook that he watched the storm’s growth on satellite images with a growing pit in his stomach.Sheriff A.J. Smith in Franklin County, near the vulnerable coast, sent his deputies door to door urging people to evacuate.“We have done everything we can as far as getting the word out,” Smith said. “Hopefully more people will leave.”Most of the waterfront homes stood vacant in Keaton Beach, which could get some of the highest water — seas up 9 feet (2.75 meters) above ground level.“I know it’s going to cover everything around here,” said Robert Sadousky, who at 77 has stayed through more than four decades of storms. The retired mill worker took a last look at the canal behind his home, built on tall stilts overlooking the Gulf. He pulled two small boat docks from the water, packed his pickup and picked some beans from his garden before getting out — like hundreds of thousands elsewhere. The local geography — low-lying land and lots of areas where people live along waterways — means many people living inland could see their homes flooded as Michael makes landfall.“We don’t know if it’s going to wipe out our house or not,” Jason McDonald, of Panama City, said as he and his wife drove north to safety into Alabama with their two children, ages 5 and 7. “We want to get them out of the way.”Scott had warned of a “monstrous hurricane,” and his Democratic opponent for the Senate, Sen. Bill Nelson, described a destructive “wall of water,” but some officials didn’t see any rush of evacuees ahead of the storm.“I am not seeing the level of traffic on the roadways that I would expect when we’ve called for the evacuation of 75 percent of this county,” Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford said Tuesday. In the dangerously exposed coastal town of Apalachicola, population 2,500, Sally Crown planned to hunker down with her two dogs.“We’ve been through this before,” she said. “This might be really bad and serious. But in my experience, it’s always blown way out of proportion.”Mandatory evacuation orders went into effect in Panama City Beach and other low-lying areas in the storm’s path. That included Pensacola Beach but not in Pensacola itself, a city of about 54,000.Michael will weaken over land but could still spin off tornadoes and dump rain along a northeasterly path over Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia before its remnants head out to sea again. Forecasters said it also could bring 3 to 6 inches of rain, enough to trigger flash flooding in places still recovering from Hurricane Florence.

Hurricane Michael, among strongest in U.S. history, slams Florida Panhandle-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-By Rod Nickel-October 10, 2018

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (Reuters) - Hurricane Michael, the fiercest storm to hit Florida in a quarter century and the third-most powerful ever to strike the U.S. mainland, roared into the state's Gulf coast on Wednesday with tree-snapping winds and towering waves.Michael, whose rapid intensification as it churned north over the Gulf of Mexico caught many by surprise, made landfall early in the afternoon near Mexico Beach, about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Panama City in Florida's Panhandle region, with top sustained winds reaching 155 miles per hour (249 kph). The storm came ashore as a Category 4 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson wind scale. Its sustained winds were just 2 mph (3.2 kph) shy of an extremely rare Category 5.As predicted, the storm was downgraded hours later to a still-formidable Category 3 with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph (205 kph) and higher gusts as it pushed inland to the Alabama-Georgia border.Causing major disruptions to oil and gas production in the Gulf even before its arrival, the storm was forecast to unleash waves as high as 14 feet (4.3 meters) above normal sea levels in some areas, the National Hurricane Center said.“My God, it’s scary. I didn’t expect all this,” said Bill Manning, 63, a grocery clerk who fled his camper van in Panama City for safer quarters in a hotel, only to see the electricity there go out. "Panama City, I don’t know if there will be much left."Only a couple of hours after Michael came ashore, floodwaters were more than 7-1/2 feet (2.3 meters) deep near Apalachicola on Florida's Panhandle, National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said.Authorities had urged coastal residents in 20 Florida counties along a 200-mile (320-km) stretch of shoreline to head to higher ground before the storm, but anyone who had not fled by Wednesday morning was told it was too late to evacuate. An estimated 6,000 evacuees took cover in emergency shelters, most of them in Florida, and that number was expected to swell to 20,000 across five states by week's end, said Brad Kieserman of the American Red Cross.Even before Michael made full landfall, it was whipping trees with its winds and flooding the town of Port St. Joe."It feels like you don't know when the next tree is going to fall on top of you because its blowing so ferociously," said Port St. Joe Mayor Bo Patterson. "It's very, very scary. We have trees being uprooted, heavy, heavy rain."'JAW-DROPPING' STRENGTH-Patterson said about 2,500 of the town's 3,500 people had stayed put, including about 100 in a beachside area who ignored a mandatory evacuation order. "This happened so quickly, we weren't exactly prepared," he said.Brock Long, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), said early evacuation efforts in the area were slow.Michael grew from a tropical storm into a Category 4 hurricane over the course of about 40 hours."Satellite images of Michael’s evolution on Tuesday night were, in a word, jaw-dropping," wrote Bob Henson, a meteorologist with weather site Weather Underground. With minimum barometric pressure recorded at 919 millibars, a measure of hurricane strength, Michael stood as the strongest storm ever to hit Florida's Panhandle and the most intense anywhere in the state since Hurricane Andrew in 1992.Michael also ranked as the third-most powerful storm on record to make landfall in the continental United States, after Hurricane Camille on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1969 and the so-called Labor Day hurricane of 1935 in the Florida Keys.President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency for the entire state of Florida, freeing up federal assistance to supplement state and local disaster responses. He was briefed by FEMA's Long in the Oval Office on preparations. At mid-afternoon, about 192,000 homes and business customers were already without power in Florida alone, with more outages reported in Georgia and Alabama, utility companies said.Michael was forecast to move across southeastern Alabama and southwestern Georgia on Wednesday night.Helen Neal, 88, and her husband, J.W. Neal, 87, preferred to take their chances in a hotel rather than stay in their two-story Panama City Beach beachfront house about a mile away."We just finished renovating and updating," she said. "We’re kind of nervous. God willing, we’ll still have some place."About 3,500 Florida National Guard troops were deployed to assist with evacuations and storm recovery, along with more than 1,000 search-and-rescue personnel, Governor Rick Scott said.NHC's Graham warned that the storm would continue to pack tropical storm-force winds when it reached the Carolinas, still reeling from severe flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence last month. Up to a foot (30 cm) of rainfall was forecast for some areas from Michael.Scott declared a state of emergency in 35 Florida counties. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal declared an emergency for 92 counties in his state, and a state of emergency also was announced in North Carolina.(Reporting by Devika Krishna Kumar in Tallahassee, Florida; Additional reporting by Rod Nickel in Panama City, Florida, Susan Heavey, Steve Holland and Roberta Rampton in Washington, Gina Cherelus and Barbara Goldberg in New York, Brendan O'Brien in Milwaukee, Liz Hampton in Houston, Andrew Hay in New MexicoWriting by Lisa Shumaker and Bill Trott; Editing by Bill Berkrot and Cynthia Osterman)

Sydney (AFP) - A major 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea's New Britain island on Thursday, triggering a tsunami warning.Hazardous tsunami waves were forecast for some coasts, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.Tsunami waves were forecast to be less than 0.3 metres (one foot) high for the coasts of PNG and Solomon Islands, it said, adding that wave amplitudes could vary between regions.A spokesman for PNG's National Disaster Management Office in Port Moresby said there were no immediate reports of damage from the quake but these typically took several hours to reach the capital after a major shake. He was unable to comment on the tsunami threat. The epicentre was 125 kilometres (78 miles) east of the town of Kimbe on the island of New Britain, according to the United States Geological Survey, which said it struck at a depth of around 40 km.Two smaller tremors struck the region immediately before and after the main earthquake. The USGS website said there was a "low likelihood of casualties and damage" from the quake. But it warned that "recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as tsunamis, landslides and liquefaction that might have contributed to losses."PNG sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates. The country is still recovering after a 7.5-magnitude quake hit its mountainous interior in February, killing at least 125 people, cutting off access to villages and knocking out power. Its remote terrain means it often takes several days for information about damage from quakes to reach officials and aid agencies.

Operator of limo company in fatal NY crash arrested-Nauman Hussain is son of owner Shahed Hussain, who helped uncover synagogue attack plots in 2009-By AP-TOI-10 October 2018

ALBANY, New York — The operator of a limousine company involved in a crash that killed 20 people was arrested Wednesday, state police said. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the charges were related to the deadly wreck.Nauman Hussain was taken into custody following a traffic stop on a highway near Albany, the New York State Police said in a brief news release. No further details were released on the charges. A phone call to Hussain’s lawyer was not immediately returned.Hussain was the day-to-day operator of Prestige Limousine, and the son of the company’s owner, Shahed Hussain, a Pakistani immigrant and Albany-area businessman who began going undercover for the FBI after he ran into legal trouble.@nyspolice says Shahed Hussain, owner of deadly limo crash company, is out of country, possibly Pakistan. Sons may be running company. Search warrant seized remaining limos. Company claims voluntary surrender of cars. Former FBI informant worked with feds to avoid deportation. pic.twitter.com/jTy6F0B0wx— Tim Lake (@TimLakeNews) October 8, 2018-In 2009, prosecutors credited Shahed Hussain with rooting out radical Muslims in an elaborate sting at a mosque in Newburgh, a city north of New York City. His cooperation resulted in the conviction of four men in a thwarted plot to attack synagogues and shoot down military planes.State police and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash, the nation’s deadliest transportation accident since an air crash outside Buffalo in February 2009 killed 50 people. The limousine ran off the road Saturday at the bottom of a long hill in Schoharie, 25 miles west of Albany. The crash killed two pedestrians and all 18 people in the limo celebrating a woman’s birthday. The limo driver was among the dead.Prestige Limousine has been criticized for maintaining vehicles rife with violations and for employing a driver lacking a commercial license.Prestige’s lawyer, Lee Kindlon, has said that safety issues were corrected. He said the driver might have misjudged his ability to stop at the bottom of a hill. The driver’s widow said her husband had expressed concerns about the company’s vehicles.Kim Lisinicchia told CBS in an interview broadcast on Wednesday that there were several times she heard her husband, Scott Lisinicchia, state: “I’m not going to drive this, like this. You need to get me another car.” But then “he trusted in what the limo company said, that the cars were all right.”“He was in excellent health. He was an excellent driver. For over 20-plus years he drove a tractor-trailer,” Kim Lisinicchia said.“I feel for these victims,” she said. “I am in no way trying to make it seem like it’s about me or my husband. I just want my husband to be vindicated. I have to stand for him, ’cause nobody else will.”The limousine that ran the stop sign was cited for code violations on Sept. 4, including a problem with the antilock brakes’ malfunction indicator system. Four of the Gansevoort, New York-based company’s limos were cited for 22 maintenance violations this year, though none was deemed critical.“Those safety issues had been addressed and corrected,” Kindlon told CBS News in a segment on Tuesday. “Not all infractions are major. A lot of these things are minor and were fixed.”State Department of Transportation spokesman Joseph Morrissey said a sticker was placed on the vehicle after the September inspection declaring it “unserviceable.” He said Kindlon’s assertion that the code violations had been corrected and the vehicle cleared for service was “categorically false.”Even if the repairs were made, the limo would have needed to be re-inspected and the owner would need approval again to transport passengers, a state transportation department spokesman said.Kindlon said he doesn’t think those infractions contributed to the crash.A vigil for the victims will be held on Wednesday evening in a Schoharie school gymnasium.Services have been set for some of the victims, including 24-year-old Savannah Devonne Bursese, of Johnstown, the accident’s youngest victim. Her family is holding a private service Friday. In nearby Amsterdam, a funeral Mass is scheduled Saturday for the four King sisters, three of their husbands and the brother of one of the husbands.

PA says airport detainment of US student is ‘political terrorism’-Ramallah also slams US for falling to back Lara Alqasem, saying it shows extent of Washington’s bias toward Israel-By Adam Rasgon-TOI-10 October 2018

The Palestinian Authority lashed out at Israel for detaining a US student of Palestinian descent over allegations that she supports a boycott of the Jewish state, wading into an affair that has placed Israeli border policies under a harsh microscope.Lara Alqasem, 22, who has Palestinian grandparents, was prevented from entering Israel after arriving at Ben Gurion International Airport last Tuesday, despite having received a student visa from the Israeli Consulate in Miami to study in a masters program at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She has been held in an airport detention facility ever since while she appeals to be let in, arguing that she does not support a boycott of the country. Israel has said she can fly home any time, but she is fighting in court to be allowed in, and the Hebrew University is backing her.The PA Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Alqasem’s detention was “a punishment for her ideas” and “the ugliest form of political terrorism.”The Population Immigration and Border Authority has said the decision to stop Alqasem at the airport was due to her “boycott activity,” while Strategic Affairs Ministry officials noted that she was a member of Students for Justice in Palestine, a campus group that calls for boycotting Israel over its policies toward the Palestinians.Israel enacted a law last year banning any foreigner who “knowingly issues a public call for boycotting Israel” from entering the country. It also has identified 20 activist groups from around the world whose members can be denied entry upon arrival. The PA also criticized the US for failing to back Alqasem despite her being a citizen.“Alqasem’s experience exposes the size of the blind American bias in favor of the occupation to the point that it will give up on the rights of an American citizen,” the ministry said.Commenting on Alqasem’s case on Tuesday, the US State Department said it values freedom of expression, but stated Israel was free to decide whether to grant her entry.“We are aware of her case,” US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters in a briefing. “Our embassy is providing consular access as we would to all American citizens.“We value freedom of expression, also in cases where people don’t agree with local policies or even the United States’ policies,” she said, but added that “ultimately, it is up to the government of Israel to decide who it wants to let into the country.”On Monday, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem asked to be included in a Tel Aviv District Court petition Alqasem filed against her deportation.Hebrew University president Asher Cohen said Tuesday that the fact that Alqasem wants to study at the school was proof she does not support a boycott, but that the attention her case had drawn could end up giving ammunition to actual supporters of the BDS movement.“What’s being done regarding this student hurts our activities against BDS,” Cohen told Army Radio. “She wants to come here and learn. For a year… She says she’s coming to study for a year… That activity of hers is against BDS.”Alqasem is registered to study human rights at the school-Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan has criticized the university for supporting the student’s court appeal against her impending deportation.“The Hebrew University is working together with the extreme left here,” he told Army Radio Tuesday. He also said that Alqasem can leave Israel any time and if she were to renounce her past activities and publicly declare that boycott efforts are illegitimate, he would reconsider her case.Alqasem, from the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Southwest Ranches, Florida, is a former president of the University of Florida chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine. The group backs boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel. In her appeal, Alqasem has argued that she never actively participated in boycott campaigns, and promised the court that she would not promote them in the future.“We’re talking about someone who simply wants to study in Israel, who is not boycotting anything,” said her lawyer, Yotam Ben-Hillel. “She’s not even part of the student organization anymore.”AP contributed to this report.

Netanyahu reportedly says ‘reckless’ Erdogan ruining Turkish democracy, economy-PM tells Greek, Cypriot ministers that Turkish leader making ‘economic decisions that make no sense,’ says Israel ‘worried’ he will sabotage gas drilling in Eastern Mediterranean-By TOI staff and Agencies-OCT 10,18

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly told the foreign ministers of Greece and Cyprus last month that he was deeply pessimistic about Turkey’s future as a democracy under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and said he believes its economy is destined for further decline.“Turkey is becoming undemocratic,” Netanyahu said, according to a Wednesday Channel 10 report that cited Israeli officials familiar with the September meeting.“Erdogan calls me ‘Hitler’ every two weeks. It’s a systemic problem – I don’t see light at the end of the tunnel,” he said, also noting his concerns that Turkey may take delivery of the advanced F-35 fighter jets.“Erdogan is making economic decisions that make no sense,” he said. “The situation there is getting worse.”Netanyahu warned the Greek and Cypriot officials the Turkish leader may act to sabotage their natural gas drilling operations in the Mediterranean, according to the report.“Erdogan is unpredictable and reckless. We’re worried and watching to see if he does something in the region [about the gas] … I’m pessimistic.”Netanyahu and Erdogan have gone head to head a number of times this year over the deadly clashes along the Gaza border and a controversial law passed by the Knesset earlier this year defining Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people. After dozens of Palestinians — most of them members of Hamas or other Gaza terror groups — were killed in border clashes with Israeli troops in May, Erdogan branded Israel a “terrorist state” and claimed it was committing genocide against Palestinians.Turkey recalled its ambassador and expelled Israel’s ambassador, Eitan Na’eh, and consul in Istanbul.Israel responded in kind, expelling Turkey’s consul-general in Jerusalem and summoning the country’s deputy ambassador for a dressing down.In July, Erdogan again lashed out at Israel after the Jewish nation-state law was passed, calling it the “most fascist, racist state” in the world, and said that the “spirit of Hitler… has found its resurgence among some of Israel’s leaders.”He claimed there was “no difference between Hitler’s obsession with the Aryan race and Israel’s understanding that these ancient lands are meant only for Jews.”Netanyahu promptly hit back at the Turkish leader, accusing him of ushering Turkey into a “dark dictatorship” under his rule. The prime minister also slammed Turkey’s ongoing “massacres” in Kurdish regions in Syria, and Erdogan’s response to a 2016 failed coup that saw tens of thousands of Turks jailed.Though Erdogan has firmly positioned himself as a champion of the Palestinians since coming to power in 2003, Israel and Turkey in recent years have increasingly found themselves sharing vital interests on several fronts, especially Syria. As the Syrian civil war grinds to an end, Sunni Turkey is fearful of Shiite Iran’s domination of its southern neighbor, a concern shared by Israel. Often the first in line to lambaste Israel, Turkey has remained silent over purported Israeli airstrikes against Hezbollah and Iranian weapons shipments and military installations in Syria. But according to the Channel 10 report, Netanyahu said the recent flare-up in tensions has ended the bilateral intelligence coordination between the two countries.“Turkey wanted to advance reconciliation with Israel two years ago because of the situation in Syria,” he said. “Now [after the removal of the Israeli ambassador in Ankara] there isn’t even intelligence cooperation with Turkey on Syria.”Last month, Hebrew-language media outlets reported Israel and Turkey were holding back-channel talks in a bid to restore the all-but-severed diplomatic relations between the two nations.Meanwhile, Turkey is facing an economic crisis and a collapsing currency amid a diplomatic falling out and trade dispute with the United States over Ankara’s detention of an American pastor on espionage and terror-related charges.Netanyahu told the Cypriot and Greek officials he did not expect tensions between Washington and Ankara to improve until after the US midterm elections because President Donald Trump would continue to heavily pressure Ankara to release Andrew Brunson to appease his Evangelical constituents.“Trump won’t ease up the pressure,” he told the ministers, adding that he had agreed to help repair the fraying ties between the two countries.
