Tens of thousands stage anti-racism march in Berlin-Organizers says over 240,000 Germans attend rally, held in response to string of xenophobic incidents attributed to rising popularity of far-right-By AFP-TOI-OCT 15,18

BERLIN, Germany — Tens of thousands of people marched in Berlin Saturday in a protest against racism amid growing concern over xenophobic incidents in the east of the country.Organizers said at least 242,000 people turned out for the rally. Police spoke of “several tens of thousands.”“It’s already a success,” said Theresa Hartmann, spokeswoman for the #unteilbar (indivisible) movement, who said they had only been expecting 40,000 people to turn up.The marchers walked in balmy weather through the city center before gathering at the Brandenburg gate where a number of German groups performed. They shouted anti-Nazi slogans and carried placards in favor of rescue missions on the Mediterranean Sea and others saying “More love, less hate” and “No room for Nazis.”The #unteilbar collective, made up of a number of activist groups and individuals, has already staged demonstrations in the northern city of Hamburg and Munich in the south, that attracted thousands. They are supported by trades unions, religious organizations, and some charities. Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), posted a message of support on Twitter. The march was partly in response to the rise of the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.Building on the backlash to Chancellor Angela Merkel’s decision to admit more than a million refugees in 2015 and 2016, it won its first parliamentary seats in elections last year.At the end of August a far-right demonstration in the eastern city of Chemnitz after the murder of a German that was blamed on a refugee degenerated into attacks on foreigners.Early in October, German police arrested six men on suspicion of having taken part in the attacks, describing them as members of a far-right “terrorist” group.

Bodies of 11 babies found hidden in former funeral home in Detroit: police-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-October 15, 2018

(Reuters) - The bodies of 11 babies were found hidden at a former funeral home in Detroit on Friday after authorities received an anonymous letter leading them to the remains, police said.Police are investigating after authorities found nine badly decomposed bodies inside a box and two inside a casket, all hidden in a false ceiling at the former Cantrell Funeral Home, Detroit police Lieutenant Brian Bowser told reporters."We have to find out what happened and why it happened," he said, adding that police were trying to contact Raymond Cantrell, the former owner of the funeral home.Reuters could not immediately reach Cantrell.Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs went to the property on the city's east side on Friday afternoon after receiving an anonymous letter describing the existence and location of the remains, Bowser said.Authorities were identifying the remains and notifying parents, he said. It is unclear how long the remains were hidden. Bowser said some of the babies had apparently been stillborn. In April, state regulators found "deplorable, unsanitary conditions" at the same premises, including embalmed bodies in an unrefrigerated garage and other badly decomposed remains, the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs said in a statement at the time. The funeral home was also accused of several licensing and financial violations, the agency said.(Reporting by Brendan O'Brien in Milwaukee; Editing by Catherine Evans)

THE FIRST JUDGEMENT OF THE EARTH STARTED WITH WATER-IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THE LAST GENERATION WILL BE HAVING FLOODING
GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

Rescuers find first body in town worst hit by hurricane Michael-[Reuters]-By Rod Nickel-YAHOONEWS-October 15, 2018

MEXICO BEACH, Fla. (Reuters) - Searchers on Friday uncovered the first body in the rubble of the Florida town of Mexico Beach, which was nearly obliterated by Hurricane Michael, as the toll from the historic storm rose to at least 18 and was expected to climb further.Rescue teams, hampered by power and telephone outages, used cadaver dogs, drones and heavy equipment to hunt for hundreds of people unaccounted for in devastated communities across the Florida Panhandle."I've watched on television, thinking of what others have experienced, like in the Carolinas and Texas," Mexico Beach Mayor Al Cathey told reporters referring to earlier hurricanes."But it's different when you walk down and see this, and your emotions run away. This is just a small unique coastal community."No other information was available about the dead man found in Mexico Beach, said Joseph Zahralban, Miami's fire chief who was leading a search and rescue unit. He said it was unclear if the man lived alone or with a family.Three deaths were reported in Marianna, in Jackson County, Florida, Sheriff Lou Roberts told a news conference on Friday afternoon.Florida accounts for nine of the storm-related deaths, with five more in Virginia, three in North Carolina and one in Georgia. The death toll is expected to rise as rescuers go house-to-house and comb through the rubble in Mexico Beach and other Florida coastal communities, such as Port St. Joe and Panama City, said Brock Long, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).The Houston-based volunteer search-and-rescue network CrowdSource Rescue said its teams were trying to find about 2,100 people either reported missing or stranded and in need of help in Florida, co-founder Matthew Marchetti said.Social media websites were crowded with messages from those trying to reach missing family in Florida's Bay and Gulf Counties.Marchetti said his volunteer search teams, consisting mostly of off-duty police officers and firefighters, also had rescued or accounted for 345 others previously reported to CrowdSource Rescue since Michael struck on Wednesday.-DOGS AND BULLDOZERS-FEMA crews have been using bulldozers and other heavy equipment to push a path through debris so rescuers can sift the rubble using specially trained search dogs.More than 1,700 search and rescue workers have been deployed, Governor Rick Scott’s office said in a statement, including seven swift-water rescue teams and nearly 300 ambulances.Michael crashed ashore near Mexico Beach on Wednesday afternoon as one of the most powerful storms in U.S. history, with winds of up to 155 mph (250 kph). It pushed a wall of seawater inland, causing widespread flooding. The tropical storm, which grew in less than two days into a Category 4 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, tore apart entire neighborhoods in the Panhandle, reducing homes to naked concrete foundations or piles of wood and siding.Except for the emergency 911 system, authorities in Bay County, the epicenter of the disaster, were virtually without telephone or internet service until late on Friday, making communications internally and with the public difficult."We didn't have anything," said Ruth Corley, a spokeswoman for the Bay County Sheriff's Department. "We've been writing things down on pieces of paper. We're doing what we can with the minimal media that we have."She said local television stations were knocked off the air for two days, and authorities were relying on the Gulf State College radio station to transmit public service bulletins. Search teams went door-to-door hunting victims.-REBUILD RIGHT-FEMA's Long urged communities such as Mexico Beach, where many homes were pulverized by 12 to 14 feet (3.7 to 4.3 meters) of storm surge, to rebuild to withstand future storms."It's OK if you want to live on the coast or on top of a mountain that sees wildfires or whatever, but you have to build to a higher standard," he said. "If we're going to rebuild, do it right."By Friday morning the storm remnants were about 275 miles (445 km) southwest of Nantucket, Massachusetts, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph).More than 940,000 homes and businesses on the U.S. East Coast were without power and it could be weeks before power is restored to the most damaged parts of Florida. The numbers in emergency shelters were expected to swell to 20,000 across five states by Friday, said Brad Kieserman of the American Red Cross. The Coast Guard said it rescued 129 people.Even as rescuers searched the rubble for survivors or the dead, some Mexico Beach residents were nervously trickling back, expressing hope the place, nicknamed "the Forgotten Coast," would not change too much as it rebuilds."It was the perfect beach town. Not all of that commercialism," said Dottie Sinclair, 57, a nurse, adding a Subway fast-food restaurant was the only commercial chain."I don't think it will ever be the same," said her husband Danny, 64, who is semi-retired. "People will just pack up and leave."(Reporting by Rod Nickel; Additional reporting by Devika Krishna Kumar in Port St. Joe, Florida, Gina Cherelus and Scott DiSavino in New York, Gary McWilliams and Liz Hampton in Houston, Jon Herskovitz in Austin, Texas, Brendan O'Brien in Milwaukee and Alex Dobuzinskis, Steve Gorman and Dan Whitcomb in Los Angeles; Writing by Dan Whitcomb; Editing by Sandra Maler and Clarence Fernandez)

Florida wild cat sanctuary caught in hurricane's path-[Reuters]-By Terray Sylvester-YAHOONEWS-October 15, 2018

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (Reuters) - "Saint" the mountain lion was pacing nervously in his pen and crying days before Hurricane Michael cut a path of destruction through the Bear Creek Feline Center, a refuge for 23 wild cats near Florida's Panama City."They were very agitated," said Bertie Broaddus, who runs the center with her husband Jim Broaddus, as she inspected the damage from the powerful storm that killed at least 17 people and tore up Florida's Panhandle coastline."If they'd been in the wild they instinctively would have moved on,” said Jim. "But when they're in captivity they don't have that option. So they hunker down, and then after it's over, they're agitated and traumatized just like the people."The endangered animals at the refuge -- rescued African servals, jaguarundi, bobcats, Siberian lynx, mountain lions and panthers -- were unharmed. The center sustained considerable damage and its main access road was blocked by fallen trees.Bertie, a retired special education teacher, opened the center, about 15 miles north of downtown Panama City, with her husband in 2000. They live there and run the nonprofit with the help of a dozen volunteers. As they inspected downed trees, a torn roof, collapsed garage and flattened fence around the perimeter, the couple's main concern was how to care for the animals, whose daily food and medical costs are about $600.The center is a TripAdvisor Panama City top attraction and tours help cover its costs, but the hurricane has driven away visitors and access to the butcher shop that supplies meat for the animals has been impeded.-CAT WATCH-On Wednesday night, as Hurricane Michael raged through the area, Bertie said that she and her husband repeatedly checked on the cats outside."If I could have I would have evacuated, but I couldn’t leave the animals," she said. "We had to hunker down and make sure they were OK for the safety of the community."She said neighbors were justifiably concerned that some of the big cats might escape in the storm."We're kind of worried about those cats getting out. There’s a lot of kids in this neighborhood," said Jonathon Roeder, 33, who lives with his family in Cedar Wood Estates, about two miles from the Center.Neighbors and agents from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission checked on the center after the storm."These cats can hurt people. You don’t know what they would do if they were out," Bertie said, explaining that the mountain lions are large enough to be dangerous and have no fear of people because they never lived in the wild.On Friday, the Center was without electricity, running water and telephone reception. The owners estimated that it has as much as $100,000 in damages and that it will take at least six months to restore it.But what matters most to them is the animals; the mountain lions are still pacing anxiously in their cages, which is not their normal behavior."The big guys are pacing, which makes us cry," Jim said.(Reporting by Terray Sylvester; Editing by Dina Kyriakidou)

Devastated Mexico Beach will be back, but different: mayor-[Reuters]-By Rod Nickel-YAHOONEWS-October 15, 2018

MEXICO BEACH, Fla. (Reuters) - Mexico Beach, the seafront Florida resort town shattered by Hurricane Michael, will be rebuilt "100 percent", its mayor said on Friday. But the community, void of condominium high rises and hotel chains, is bound to be built differently to limit future damage, Mayor Al Cathey said."We're going to lose some of the quaintness that we had, in the old cottage style houses," he told Reuters as he surveyed the damage in his truck. "But we'll be newer and improved."Nearly entire blocks of small two-story houses were swept away during the hurricane, presumably by storm surges that reached up to nine feet (2.7 meters). Some larger bungalows and multi-story buildings survived. Those that withstood the storm were likely built or raised after Florida overhauled its building codes in 2001, Brock Long, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, told CNN on Friday. Local and state officials must be proactive in passing the necessary regulations, he said."It's OK if you want to live on the coast or on top of a mountain that sees wildfires or whatever, but you have to build to a higher standard ... If we're going to rebuild, do it right," Long said. The immediate challenges for Mexico Beach residents who were picking through the remains of their homes were a lack of power, water and phone service, and no nearby sources of food and gasoline."I don't know if we can rebuild or not, depends on the insurance," said Marcie Miller, a real estate agent from Georgia, removing valuables from the shell of her house. "And now they're talking about changing the building code."Insurance usually covers the cost of a home, but not the expense of rebuilding to stricter construction codes.A second residence owned by Marcie and her husband Pete, a farmer, a two-story duplex, was tossed in two large pieces a city block from a double lot that the family has owned since 1957.Some residents who were nervously trickling back on Friday said they hoped the place, nicknamed "the Forgotten Coast," does not change too much."It was the perfect beach town. Not all of that commercialism," said Dottie Sinclair, 57, a nurse, adding that one Subway fast-food restaurant was the only commercial chain."I don't think it will ever be the same," said husband Danny Sinclair, 64, who is semi-retired. "People will just pack up and leave."Mexico Beach, is one of many white-sand beaches along the Florida Panhandle, but unlike communities like Panama City Beach, it has no large scale resorts run by big chains. While it will be different, the mayor said he hopes to keep Mexico Beach's law preventing buildings taller than four floors."If we do that then the big guys won't be interested in us," Cathey said. The mayor rode out the hurricane in his house, which was unscathed, but the hardware store he owns was leveled.A search and rescue operation led by FEMA had not found any Mexico Beach fatalities as of Friday morning, authorities said. Residents who returned were not giving up on their home."I hope they rebuild it. It's a wonderful community," said Roger Wiggins, 66, a retired maintenance worker."It's just going to take years."(Reporting by Rod Nickel; Editing by Sandra Maler)

Factbox: Over 940,000 U.S. customers without power after Michael-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-October 15, 2018

(Reuters) - More than 940,000 homes and businesses on the U.S. East Coast were without power on Friday after Hurricane Michael and its remnants moved from Florida to Virginia, according to local power companies. Some customers in the hardest hit parts of Florida may have to wait weeks for power to be restored, the utilities said.In total, Michael caused over 2.6 million outages since hitting the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday as a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 155 miles per hour (250 kilometers per hour).Southern Co's Gulf Power unit said it could take weeks to restore power in the hardest hit parts of Florida like the Panama City area. In Georgia, Southern's Georgia Power unit said it expected to restore service to most customers over the next couple of days with those in the hardest hit areas by Oct. 16.Duke Energy Corp said its roughly 6,000 workers have restored power to more than half of the estimated 670,000 customers who lost power in the Carolinas. The company, however, said some outages in the hardest hit areas could take several days to repair.(Reporting by Karen Rodrigues, Swati Verma in Bengaluru and Scott DiSavino in New York)

Islamic State abducts hundreds from displacement camp in east Syria-War monitor says gunmen seized over 100 families by force during jihadist counterattack against advancing US-backed forces-By Agencies-TOI-OCT 15,18

BEIRUT, Lebanon — Hundreds of people were taken by Islamic State group fighters from a displacement camp in east Syria during a jihadist counterattack against advancing US-backed forces, a monitor said Saturday. The jihadists raided the camp on Friday, taking “more than 100 families” including relatives of IS defectors and of jihadists killed in fighting, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.A number of fighters of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) died trying to defend the camp in a battle that lasted several hours, the Britain-based monitoring group said. The Observatory warned that IS might kill them.In a statement, SDF said the fighting at the Hajin camp for the displaced left 20 IS gunmen and “several” of its fighters dead. It added that IS gunmen seized civilians by force and took them to areas in the last pocket of territory they control in the region. The area in Syria’s eastern Deir el-Zour province has been witnessing days of intense clashes between IS and the Kurdish-led SDF forces amid bad weather and low visibility. The SDF launched a major assault on September 10 on the small stretch of the Euphrates Valley around the town of Hajin where they estimate some 3,000 jihadists are holed up.But they have sustained heavy casualties in the operation being conducted with US-led air support. Since Wednesday, 37 SDF fighters have been killed in jihadist counterattacks, the Observatory said.IS has lost 58 fighters, most of them in retaliatory coalition air strikes, it added.“IS is pressing its attacks in the Hajin area as the SDF battles to hold them off with the support of the international coalition,” Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.But a prolonged sandstorm has made it difficult for the coalition to carry out air strikes.IS published statements on its social media accounts describing a number of attacks by “soldiers of the caliphate” against SDF forces in the Hajin area. The battle for Hajin has claimed the lives of 176 SDF fighters and 325 IS jihadists since its launch last month, according to Observatory figures. The SDF, backed by the coalition, has ousted IS from swathes of northern and eastern Syria, including Raqa, the de facto capital of the jihadists’ so-called caliphate.Founded in 2015, the SDF is spearheaded by the People’s Protection Units (YPG), a powerful Kurdish armed movement.Hundreds of foreigners have joined the YPG to battle IS, which has its own notorious contingent of foreign fighters.

Shin Bet probes Palestinian’s death in stoning attack, as settlers suspected-Thousands attend funeral for mother of two killed when car pelted with rocks; husband says he heard assailants speak Hebrew; Abbas: ‘An ugly crime. It cannot go unpunished’-By Jacob Magid and TOI staff-OCT 15,18

Hundreds of people on Saturday attended the West Bank funeral of Aisha Muhammad Talal Rabi, killed Friday night in a stone-throwing attack that caused her car to crash, and which has been blamed on Jewish settlers.According to Yesh Din, which documents alleged Israeli rights abuses in the West Bank, the stone-throwing at the Tapuah Junction caused 47-year-old Rabi’s husband Aykube to lose control of the car. AP reported that she was killed by a rock that hit her in the head. There was no official word on the exact cause of death.Rabi was laid to rest Saturday in the village of Biddya, southwest of Nablus.Aykube told Reuters the couple was driving near a settlement when the attack occurred. “The stones came from the side where the settlement is. I could hear the people speak Hebrew, but I didn’t see them.”A spokesman for the Shin Bet confirmed Saturday that the security agency opened a probe into the incident, suggesting that it was indeed an act of terror carried out by area settlers. The nationalistic crime unit of the police’s Judea and Samaria (West Bank) District is also probing the death, which has been placed under a gag order, but authorities have not ruled out the possibility that a group of Palestinians stone throwers mistook Rabi’s vehicle for an Israeli one.Right-wing activist and lawyer Itamar Ben Gvir said Shin Bet should not be involved in the probe. “Experience shows the Jewish Division investigates…in an aggressive and problematic manner which does not allow the truth to come out, but at most brings out false confessions.”Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas told Rabi’s family Saturday: “This is a terribly ugly crime, carried out by settlers under the protection of the occupation state. It cannot go unpunished.”Thousands of relatives and neighbors attended Rabi’s funeral. Her body was wrapped in a Palestinian flag as grievers carried the coffin to the cemetery.“With our blood and our spirit we will redeem the martyr,” shouted the angry mourners. Aisha’s brother, Ibrahim Bolad, said there was no doubt, “settlers threw stones at the car.”Hamas issued a leaflet Saturday including Rabi among the “martyrs” killed in clashes with Israel the day prior on the Gaza border, Hadashot news reported.Reuters footage of the car following the crash showed a bloodstained brick below the passenger seat.Rabi’s cousin Isam Rabi said her husband spotted a small group of settlers close to the scene. The mother of two was taken to a hospital in Nablus where she succumbed to her wounds. Her husband received a head wound during the crash, but Yesh Din did not specify the severity of his injury.Following reports of the fatal crash, Rabbis for Human Rights warned of a “deteriorating situation” in the West Bank.“There has been an increase in the rate of injury to Palestinian civilians,” it said in a statement, calling on Israeli security forces to protect Palestinians.“At the same time, our organization condemns any kind of aggression against all parties.”Just hours after the burial Saturday afternoon, a Yesh Din field worker filmed a half a dozen of Israelis hurling stones at a pair of Palestinians working their fields in between the northern West Bank villages of Burin and Hawara. Dressed in traditional white sabbath garb, the settlers could be seen gathering the olives that the farmers were in the middle of cultivating before they fled to safety.Friday’s incident in the northern West Bank came amid high tensions after a pair of terror attacks against Israelis in the area earlier in the week.On Sunday, two Israelis were killed by a Palestinian coworker in a terror shooting at the Barkan Industrial Park and on Thursday an IDF reservist was moderately hurt in a stabbing attack outside an army base. The Shin Bet security service announced the arrest of the suspected assailant hours after Thursday’s stabbing, though Ashraf Na’alow, the suspect in the shooting attack, remains on the run.Following the stabbing, more than a dozen settler youths were filmed hurling stones at Palestinian cars stopped at an IDF checkpoint that was erected after the attack.Footage documented by a field worker for the Yesh Din rights group shows some 15 young Israelis fleeing a hilltop adjacent to the Yitzhar settlement and piling into a pair of vehicles after a police van arrives at the scene. The two Israeli vehicles seen in the video clip manage to speed away without being stopped by authorities.According to Yesh Din, the settlers later returned to a nearby hilltop, from which they continued throwing rocks at Palestinians. The rights group claimed IDF troops at the scene did not act to stop the settlers. There was no immediate comment from the army.In response to the stabbing, pro-settler leaders urged the government to step up its measures against terrorism, with one urging action “as if in war.”

Laying waste-Norway to bury sunken Nazi sub so as to contain its toxic cargo-More than 70 years after its destruction by the British, U-864’s load of over 60 tons of mercury has made it a renewed threat-By TOI staff and AP-OCT 15,18

Norway is planning to bury the remains of a sunken Nazi submarine under layers of sand, rubble, and concrete, in order to prevent the spillage of its toxic cargo. The rusting wreckage of the U-864, sunk in February 1945 during a desperate mission to supply Japan with advanced weapons technology, now poses a major environmental threat due to its poisonous cargo: over 60 tons of mercury.Local residents have called for the sub to be removed, but authorities fear a salvage operation could result in a catastrophic spill. Instead, the wreckage will be buried under a “sarcophagus” similar to the one erected at Chernobyl to contain the nuclear disaster there. The project will start next year and conclude by 2020. It is expected to cost over $32 million, The Times of London reported on Thursday. The U-864 tried to skirt allied navy patrols on a last-ditch secret mission code-named “Caesar,” to bring jet engine parts, missile guidance systems and mercury for weapons production to Germany’s ally, Japan. British experts discovered the mission by breaking a German code.In a rare underwater duel, the British submarine HMS Venturer stalked the U-864 for three hours before it finally sank it on Feb. 9, 1945, about two miles off Fedje. The German submarine was only 14 months old when it went down with a crew of 73 in 500 feet of water. The wreck lay undisturbed for almost 60 years until Norway’s Royal Navy discovered it in March 2003. Oslo’s newspaper Dagbladet has called it “Hitler’s secret poison bomb.”The mercury containers are rusting, and some are leaking. While only four kilograms of mercury are estimated to have leaked so far, even this has caused elevated mercury levels in the silt around the wreck, as well as in fish in the area. Fishing is not allowed in the waters nearby. When released into the ocean, metallic mercury, the silver fluid once used in thermometers, can become more dangerous than organic mercury. Through fish, organic mercury can be passed on to humans in food. Mercury poisoning can be fatal.Even small amounts can damage the nervous system, as well as cause heart and kidney problems.

U.S. archbishop criticized over sex abuse resigns with papal praise-[Reuters]-By Philip Pullella-YAHOONEWS-October 15, 2018

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The archbishop of Washington D.C. stepped down over the handling of sex abuse cases but received fulsome praise from the pope, drawing criticism from campaigners who said it showed the Catholic Church cared more for its leaders than abuse victims. Cardinal Donald Wuerl, a loyal ally of Pope Francis, was criticized in a U.S. grand jury report in August for failing to halt abuse in his previous role as archbishop of Pittsburgh. He becomes one of the highest ranking Catholic leaders to step aside over global accusations that the Church harbored sex abusers. His resignation also further exposes a rift between Francis and members of the Church's conservative wing, some of whom say the pope himself should quit over the sex abuse crisis. In a glowing letter of support, Francis made clear that he accepted Wuerl's resignation reluctantly, at Wuerl's insistence, and believed he was not guilty of trying to conceal abuse."You have sufficient elements to 'justify' your actions and distinguish between what it means to cover up crimes or not to deal with problems, and to commit some mistakes. However, your nobility has led you not to choose this way of defense. Of this, I am proud and thank you," the pope wrote.Victims advocacy groups were outraged."The pope’s letter to Cardinal Wuerl sends a clear message that for Pope Francis, Cardinal Wuerl is more important than the children he put in harm’s way," said Terence McKiernan, president of BishopAccountability.org."Until Pope Francis reverses this emphasis on coddling the hierarchy at the expense of children, the Catholic Church will never emerge from this crisis," he said in a statement.Wuerl has come under fire since the release in August of a U.S. Grand Jury report on sexual abuse which found evidence that at least 1,000 people, mostly children, had been sexually abused by some 300 clergymen over the course of 70 years. The report covered six diocese in Pennsylvania, including Pittsburgh, where Wuerl served as archbishop from 1998-2006. The report mentioned Wuerl's name more than 200 times. Wuerl has defended his overall record in Pittsburgh. In a highly unusual move, Francis asked Wuerl, who keeps the title of cardinal, to stay on as administrator of the Washington diocese until another archbishop could be appointed. Usually a new bishop is announced at the same time as such a resignation. The Washington position is the most important and visible for the Church in the United States because of its proximity to national political power."Francis would want to take his time in finding a successor in sympathy with his vision of where the Church should be going," said Father Tom Reese, author of several books on the Vatican and the Roman Catholic Church in the United States.-ERRORS IN JUDGMENT-In a statement thanking the Pope, Wuerl said he apologized for "any past errors in judgment"."My resignation is one way to express my great and abiding love for you, the people of the Church of Washington," he said. The Church has recently been hit by one sexual abuse scandal after another, from Germany, to the United States, to Chile. At the same time, a deepening polarization between conservatives and liberals in the Church has played out on social media. In his letter to Wuerl, the pope said he recognized that Wuerl wanted to step down for the greater good of the Church. He also thanked Wuerl for "actions that support, stimulate and make the unity and mission of the Church grow above every kind of sterile division sown by the father of lies."In Christian parlance, "father of lies" is a synonym for the devil. Francis has said the devil is ultimately behind sex abuse of children by priests and current divisions in the Church.Wuerl has also been accused of knowing that his predecessor in Washington, ex-cardinal Theodore McCarrick, had forced male adult seminarians to have sex with him years ago. Wuerl denies having been aware. In July McCarrick became the first cardinal in about 100 years to be stripped of his red hat and title of "eminence".Francis ordered McCarrick to retire to a life of prayer and penitence after American Church officials said as part of a separate investigation that allegations that McCarrick had sexually abused a 16-year-old boy almost 50 years ago were credible and substantiated.Francis has sought to make the Church more welcoming to divorced Catholics and homosexuals, and has chosen to concentrate on social issues such as poverty and immigration rather than moral ones. But that has angered conservatives, some of whom have accused him of heresy and sowing confusion among the faithful.(Reporting By Philip PullellaEditing by Peter Graff)

Supreme Court with Kavanaugh clears way for Tennessee execution-[Reuters]-By Jon Herskovitz-YAHOONEWS-October 14, 2018

(Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court with new Justice Brett Kavanaugh issued two decisions on Thursday that helped clear the way for Tennessee to execute an inmate convicted of murdering two men in 1983.Edmund Zagorski, 63, had been set to be executed on Thursday but a few hours before the Supreme Court's decision Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam granted a 10-day reprieve to allow the case to wind itself through the courts and to consider the inmate's request to be put to death by electrocution.Kavanaugh's name was not on the Supreme Court's two decisions that were offered without elaboration, so it was not clear how the conservative justice voted in what was likely his first ruling in his new post. Liberal justices Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor dissented in both decisions. In its first decision, the court denied a request to hear a case brought by Zagorski and other Tennessee death row inmates over the state's lethal injection drug protocol. The mix includes a compound used in flawed executions in Oklahoma and Arizona where witnesses said inmates twisted in pain on death chamber gurneys as drugs to halt breathing and cause cardiac failure took effect."The longer we stand silent amid growing evidence of inhumanity in execution methods like Tennessee’s, the longer we extend our own complicity in state-sponsored brutality," Sotomayor wrote.Lawyers for Zagorski said he believed that compared to the state's lethal injection mix, the electric chair would be a less painful option. The Supreme Court also lifted a U.S. appeals court decision from a day earlier to temporarily halt the execution after the current lawyers for Zagorski argued his initial trial lawyers failed to adequately defend him at his murder trial and sentencing.Zagorski was convicted of murdering John Dale Dotson and Jimmy Porter in a drug deal and stealing the money they had on them to purchase a large quantity of marijuana, court documents showed.Brett Kavanaugh spent a collegial first day on the bench as a U.S. Supreme Court justice on Tuesday that contrasted sharply with the venom of his confirmation process, taking an active role in arguments alongside his eight new colleagues.
