Father of California Republican smears son’s opponent as terror threat-Former congressman Duncan Hunter Sr. shows photo of Ammar Campa-Najjar with his father, a former PLO member; Campa-Najjar: ‘I don’t need my dad to stand here to fight my battles’-By JULIE WATSON 18 October 2018
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter is stepping up efforts to convince voters his Democratic opponent is a security threat because of his family’s background — something the Latino, Arab-American contender forcefully rejects as a desperate attempt by an indicted incumbent.Former congressman Duncan Hunter Sr., the candidate’s father, called a news conference Tuesday near the USS Midway aircraft carrier in San Diego and showed a photo of Ammar Campa-Najjar with his father, a former member of the Palestine Liberation Organization.Hunter Sr. also talked about Campa-Najjar’s grandfather’s role in Black September, a group responsible for a 1972 terror attack at the Munich Olympics that left 11 Israeli athletes dead.“This has nothing to do with race, this has to do with terrorism,” said Hunter Sr., who served 14 terms in Congress before his son was elected to his seat after his retirement. When asked if there is any evidence Campa-Najjar has been linked to terror groups, Hunter Sr. again cited the family association.Campa-Najjar, who listened as Hunter Sr. spoke, pointed out to reporters that he was raised by his Christian, Mexican-American mother in San Diego and had little to do with his father or that side of his family after his parents got divorced. His grandfather was killed by Israeli commandos 16 years before he was born.A former Obama administration employee, Campa-Najjar said he was given security clearance twice in 2013 and 2016, and his campaign has received more than $50,000 in contributions from Jewish organizations.Campa-Najjar said the photo Hunter Sr. displayed was taken in 2015 when his father visited San Diego, marking the first time he had seen him since he was a boy.He called the news conference by Hunter’s father “an act of desperation” as polls suggest the race in the Republican stronghold of District 50 is tightening three weeks ahead of the Nov. 6 midterm election. An indictment accuses Hunter and his wife of misspending more than $250,000 in campaign funds on everything from tequila shots to airfare for a family pet. Prosecutors say the couple tried to conceal the illegal spending as donations to charities, including groups for wounded veterans.Campa-Najjar far outpaced Hunter in fundraising in the third quarter after the incumbent was indicted, according to the latest campaign finance disclosures. The Democrat raised more than $1.4 million in the third quarter compared to $132,000 by the incumbent. Before the news conference, Hunter and his campaign have largely avoided the media, meeting instead with voters at small, Republican-friendly events. In recent weeks, Hunter’s campaign has run attack ads that say Campa-Najjar is trying to “infiltrate Congress.” It also distributed a letter signed by three retired Marine generals who echo Hunter’s claims that his opponent is a security threat. All three work as lobbyists for the defense industry, and at least one has campaigned for Hunter. The ads have been assailed as racist by critics, including dozens of national security experts.Campa-Najjar said Hunter, a former Marine who resigned from the House Armed Services Committee after House Speaker Paul Ryan asked him to relinquish his committee assignments, would no longer qualify for a security clearance. Hunter did not attend the news conference.Campa-Najjar said he got to where he is by his own merit and character “in spite of my family.”“I don’t need my Dad to stand here to fight my battles,” Campa-Najjar said. “I’m my own man.”
Abbas rival ‘hired Israeli mercenary to assassinate UAE’s enemies in Yemen’-Buzzfeed reports Mohammed Dahlan hired Israeli-Hungarian Abraham Golan’s firm to carry out assassinations in the war-torn country on behalf of the Gulf nation-By TOI staff and Agencies-18 October 2018
Mohammed Dahlan, the former head of the PA security forces in Gaza, struck a deal with a mercenary firm run by an Israeli to carry out targeted assassinations in Yemen on behalf of the United Arab Emerites, a Buzzfeed report disclosed Tuesday.Spear Operations Group, incorporated in Delaware and run by Israeli-Hungarian founder Abraham Golan, was contracted to carry out a series of attacks, beginning December 2015.According to Buzzfeed, Golan used a team of American mercenaries — including former members of elite units in the US military — to carry out the operations in Yemen.“There was a targeted assassination program in Yemen,” Golan told BuzzFeed News. “I was running it. We did it. It was sanctioned by the UAE within the coalition.”The deal was apparently struck between Golan and Dahlan at a lunch in the officers’ club of a UAE military base in Abu Dhabi, in a meeting which reportedly started badly. “In a well-tailored suit, he [Dahlan] eyed his mercenary guests coldly and told Golan that in another context they’d be trying to kill each other,” reported Buzzfeed.Dahlan has been living in the Gulf since he left the Palestinian territories several years ago. For many years he has been a bitter rival of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, 81, who in 2011 accused of him murdering late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.Golan told the outlet he was born in Hungary to Jewish parents and was educated in France before joining the French Foreign Legion. Buzzfeed was unable to verify his military record, but sources who carried out actions in the field with him said it was clear he had experience. However, he’s “prone to exaggeration,” a former CIA officer told Buzzfeed, but “for crazy shit he’s the kind of guy you hire.”Buzzfeed says that Golan “maintains long-standing connections in Israel for his security business,” according to several sources. Golan says he lived in Israel for several years, and according to a 2008 article in Mother Jones he once partied in London with former Mossad chief Danny Yatom and an unnamed Israeli real estate tycoon. His area of expertise was said to be “providing security for energy clients in Africa.”Golan claims to have been responsible for a series of high-profile assassinations in Yemen, without giving further details. He said he based his business on Israel’s targeted assassination program, in which a number of Palestinian terror leaders were killed in air strikes and more covert operations starting in the 1970s.He said the program, which was criticized internationally and has seemingly fallen out of favor in Israel in the last several years, was done correctly despite some high-profile errors.“He argues there are some terrorist enemies so dangerous and implacable — and so difficult to arrest — that assassination is the best solution,” reported Buzzfeed. “Golan heralds his brand of targeted assassinations as a precision counterterrorism strategy with fewer civilian casualties.”The UAE, part of a Saudi-led coalition that has carried out hundreds of airstrikes and has been accused of creating the world’s largest humanitarian disaster, is backing an array of Yemeni militias in the country’s three-year-old civil war.Saudi Arabia and the UAE — as well as the United States — say their campaign aims to restore the recognized government of President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi and thwart what they contend is an attempt by Iran to seize control in Yemen through the rebels. Iran denies that the Houthis are its proxy. But the resulting war has pushed Yemen into the world’s worst humanitarian disaster, fragmentation and chaos.Golan says he only killed terrorists who were identified by the UAE government, a key ally of the US.The first operation in the country was allegedly the failed assassination attempt on Anssaf Ali Mayo, the local leader of the Islamist political party Al-Islah. The UAE says Al-Islah is a local branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, which the UAE has declared to be a terrorist organization. The first Yemeni woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Tawakkol Karman, was a member of Al-Islah.When asked by Buzzfeed, the CIA said it had no information on the mercenary program, and the Navy’s Special Warfare Command declined to comment.A former CIA official who worked in the UAE initially told the outlet US citizens would not be allowed to carry out those kinds of operations. However, he later seemed to confirm the existence of similar programs.“There were guys that were basically doing what you said,” he said. “What vetting procedures are there to make sure the guy you just smoked is really a bad guy?” The mercenaries, he reportedly said, were “almost like a murder squad.”
Trump says US needs Saudis in fight against terror, Iran-US president vows ‘we’ll get down to the bottom’ of Jamal Khashoggi’s disappearance, says he doesn’t want to nix arms deals-By AFP-TOI-18 October 2018
WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump said Wednesday he did not want to walk away from Saudi Arabia over the disappearance and alleged killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, arguing the US relies on the kingdom in the fight against terrorism.Asked during an interview on Fox Business what punitive steps he had in mind if he learned Saudi Arabia was responsible, Trump said: “Well, I hope we’re going to be on the better side of the equation.“You know we need Saudi Arabia in terms of our fight against all of the terrorism, everything that’s happening in Iran and other places.”The US and Saudi Arabia have long been allies, with both opposed to Riyadh’s regional nemesis Iran since the country’s 1979 revolution.Asked if the US would be willing to walk away from Saudi Arabia, Trump said: “I do not want to do that and frankly they have a tremendous order, $110 billion,” referring to a promised US arms sales to the kingdom.“It is 500,000 jobs, it will be ultimately $110 billion, it’s the biggest order in the history of our country from an outside military, and I said we are gonna turn that down?” he added.“So hopefully it is working out. We’ll find out, we’ll get down to the bottom of it. I hope that the king and the crown prince didn’t know about it.”“That is a big factor in my eyes, and I hope they haven’t.”Trump sent his Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Riyadh this week for talks with the Saudi leadership marked by expressions of mutual goodwill. The US chief diplomat pointedly refused to blame the kingdom and declared he did not want “to talk about any of the facts.”Khashoggi, a former regime insider who became critical of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has not been seen since he stepped inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to sort out marriage paperwork. The controversy has blown a massive hole in attempts by Prince Mohammed to promote himself as a modern reformer and led to a spate of cancellations from a major Riyadh investment conference scheduled next week.
Syrian White Helmets rescued through Israel leave Jordan for West-Jordanian foreign ministry says 279 of those evacuated from Syria via Golan Heights in daring nighttime operation have been resettled elsewhere-By AFP-TOI-18 October 2018
AMMAN, Jordan — Jordan said Wednesday a group of 279 Syrian rescue workers has left the kingdom for resettlement in Western countries three months after they were evacuated by Israel. The kingdom announced on July 22 it had received 422 White Helmet rescuers and their relatives after they were evacuated from Syria’s south ahead of advancing government troops. The group had been ferried to Israel from its war-torn neighbor and foe Syria and then escorted to Jordan by the Israeli military. They will now be resettled in Britain, Canada and Germany.Founded in 2013, the Syria Civil Defense, or White Helmets, is a network of first responders who rescue wounded in the aftermath of air strikes, shelling or blasts in rebel-held territory. The Jordanian foreign ministry said on Wednesday that “279 Syrian employees of the Civil Defense left the kingdom” for resettlement.“The government allowed them to pass through its territory temporarily for resettlement in Western countries,” the ministry said.“Britain, Germany and Canada made a legally binding commitments to resettle them within a period of no longer than three months and without obligations to the kingdom.Their passage was allowed “at the request of the United Nations for purely humanitarian reasons,” it said. The ministry added that the number of those expected to be resettled had jumped to 428 after the birth of six children and that the remainder of the group was expected to travel over the next two weeks.Famous for dramatic pictures of rescue workers pulling bloodied children from the scenes of government bombings, the White Helmets have received aid and training from Western countries and say they are independent. But Damascus and its ally Moscow have accused the group of being jihadists in disguise and a “tool” in the hands of foreign governments that support them. The group receives funding from a number of governments, including Britain, Germany, Canada and the United States, and from individual donors.
Egyptian intel chief said to postpone trip to region amid Gaza tensions-Delay comes after border flareup, but Egyptians say Abbas Kamel putting off visit to Gaza, West Bank and Israel in order to accompany Sissi to Russia, according to report-By Adam Rasgon-TOI-18 October 2018
Egyptian General Intelligence Services chief Abbas Kamel postponed his visit to the Gaza, the West Bank and Israel Wednesday, after a sharp uptick in cross-border violence near the Strip.Kamel was expected to arrive to the region on Thursday for meetings with Hamas, Palestinian Authority and Israeli officials, according to reports. An Israeli official told Hebrew-language media that Kamel had postponed the trip, and a Hamas official expressed dismay over the cancellation.A Palestinian source told Israel’s Kan state broadcaster that Egyptian officials called and said a new date for Kamel’s visit would be set in the coming days, after Wednesday saw rockets fired from the Strip at Israel, and at least 20 IDF airstrikes in response. In the predawn hours of Wednesday, one rocket was fired from Gaza at the southern city Beersheba and a second from the Strip was launched into the Mediterranean Sea near Tel Aviv, according to the Israel Defense Forces. In the hours after the rocket fire, Israeli fighter jets bombed some 20 targets in Gaza, the army said. One Palestinian was killed, apparently while attempting to fire a rocket at Israel, and several others were reported wounded. The Palestinian source said that “the official reason” the Egyptian officials gave for Kamel postponing his visit was that he is accompanying Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi on his trip to Russia which is lasting longer than planned. Sissi was in Russia Tuesday and Wednesday, where he delivered a speech to part of the Russian parliament and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. It is not clear when Sissi is expected to depart Russia.Egypt, together with United Nations special coordinator for the Middle East peace process Nikolay Mladenov, has recently played a key role in attempting to broker a ceasefire between Israel and armed groups in Gaza. Kamel is said to be leading mediation efforts for Cairo.Musa Abu Marzouk, a senior Hamas official, tweeted that “we regret that the visit of the Minister Abbas Kamel to both Gaza and Ramallah was canceled.”Palestinian, Israeli and Egyptian officials contacted by The Times of Israel could not immediately confirm that Kamel’s visit had been postponed. On Wednesday evening, an Egyptian security delegation led by Ahmed Abdelkhaliq, the official in charge of the Palestinian file in the Egyptian General Intelligence Services, exited Gaza through the Erez crossing, the Hamas-linked Palestinian Information Center reported. The security delegation arrived in Gaza on Tuesday.
Iran slams US sanctions on paramilitary group as ‘blind vindictiveness’-Country’s largest steel company, among those sanctioned, calls measures ‘nothing new’ and says they won’t impact its operations-By Amir Havasi-TOI-18 October 2018
TEHRAN, Iran (AFP) — Iran called new US sanctions against its paramilitary Basij group an act of “blind vindictiveness” on Wednesday.“America’s new sanctions are a clear insult to international and legal mechanisms and a result of the American government’s blind vindictiveness against the Iranian nation,” said foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi. He called Washington’s “lack of adherence to international legal mechanisms” a threat not only “to the Iranian people’s interests but also the world’s stability and security.”On Tuesday, the US Treasury Department slapped sanctions on the Basij paramilitary group along with a network of more than 20 businesses it said had financial links to the organization. The US pulled out of a landmark 2015 nuclear accord between Iran and six world powers in May and is reimposing punishing sanctions on the Middle Eastern country, hoping to pressure Tehran into what US President Donald Trump calls a “better deal.”Iran’s biggest steel company, among the companies sanctioned on Tuesday, dismissed the measures as “nothing new,” saying they will not affect its operations. In a statement to investors, Mobarakeh Steel Company said: “International sanctions are nothing new and Mobarakeh has faced them throughout the years just like other sectors of the Iranian economy.“This will not disrupt the company’s production, financial activities and exports,” it added.-‘Can’t stop exports’-Mobarakeh, the largest steelmaker in the Middle East and North Africa region, was accused of supporting the Mehr Eqtesad Iranian Investment Company, which is linked to Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, according to the US Treasury.A steel industry expert in Tehran said the sanctions would hurt Mobarakeh, but without entirely stopping its exports.“The company will now have problems doing anything, be it attracting financing from abroad or having any overseas accounts,” Mojtaba Fereydouni told AFP.“But sanctions cannot just stop Iran’s exports. You just ship it to a third country, unload the shipments there and leave it for a few days. Then you reship them from there with no mention of Iran and a new certificate of origin.“All this will incur a cost of $20-$30 on each ton, but it’s not impossible,” he added.Iran’s steel industry was targeted under the first wave of US sanctions reimposed in August. But Mobarakeh said it had indigenized its production line.Fereydouni added that it had set up a factory to produce the key raw material of electrode graphite, which is normally imported, primarily from India.Iran is the 10th biggest crude steel producer, according to the World Steel Association. The government said it exported $2.53 billion of steel products between March and September, up 53 percent on the previous year — an increase which is thought to be driven by a rush by buyers to make purchase before sanctions hit.
Student gunman kills 18 in attack on Crimea college, Russia says-Moscow says students died in ‘mass murder’ rather than terror attack, in the latest in a series of shifting explanations as to what exactly happened-By Agencies-TOI-18 October 2018
A Russian official said a student attacked a vocational college Wednesday in Crimea, a rampage that killed 18 other students and left more than 40 people wounded, before killing himself. The comments from Sergei Aksyonov, the regional leader in Crimea, were the latest in a series of shifting explanations by Russian officials as to what exactly happened at Kerch Polytechnic College in the Black Sea city of Kerch.Russia’s Investigative Committee said an 18-year old student identified as Vladislav Roslyakov arrived at the vocational college in Kerch with a rifle and opened fire. The committee, which probes major incidents, had initially classified the attack as an act of terror, but later said it was investigating a mass murder after “this young man shot dead people in the college and then committed suicide,” adding that all victims died of gunshot wounds.Russian officials at first reported a gas explosion, then said an explosive device ripped through the college canteen in a suspected terrorist attack. But witnesses reported that at least some victims were killed in an attack by a gunman or gunmen.Aksyonov said on television that the student, a local man acting alone, killed himself after the attack.Reflecting the official confusion, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the victims were killed by an explosion just as the Investigative Committee was announcing they were fatally shot.Putin deplored the attack as a “tragic event” and offered condolences to the victims’ families at a news conference in Sochi, where he had talks with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi.After the attack, local officials declared a state of emergency on the Black Sea peninsula that they had annexed from Ukraine in 2014. They also beefed up security at a new 19-kilometer (11.8-mile) bridge that links the peninsula with Russia that opened earlier this year.Military units were deployed around the college. The Investigative Committee initially said an explosive device that went off at the college’s canteen was rigged with shrapnel.Sergei Melikov, a deputy chief of the Russian National Guard, said the device was homemade. Explosives experts inspected the college building for other possible bombs, according to Anti-Terrorism Committee spokesman Andrei Przhezdomsky.Witnesses did not speak of an explosion but said one or more armed men attacked the school. The Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper quoted student Semyon Gavrilov as saying he fell asleep during a lecture and woke up to the sound of shooting. He said he looked out and saw a young man with a rifle shooting at people.“I locked the door, hoping he wouldn’t hear me,” the paper quoted Gavrilov as saying. He said police arrived about 10 minutes later to evacuate people from the college and he saw dead bodies on the floor and charred walls.Another student, Yuri Kerpek, told the state RIA Novosti news agency that the shooting went on for about 15 minutes.Olga Grebennikova, director of the vocational college, told KerchNet TV that men armed with automatic rifles burst into the college and “killed everyone they saw.” Grebennikova, who said she had left the grounds shortly before the attack occurred, said students and staff were among victims.A student at the college who asked not to give his name told AFP that “I was in a class when I heard shooting on the first floor.”“When we all ran out into the corridor, there were others running and shouting that some guy with a machine gun was randomly shooting everyone in turn.”“Then a strong explosion went off, but thank God, I was already outside and saw our guys being thrown out of the windows by the explosive wave,” he said, adding that part of the building collapsed.Another witness who gave his name as Sergei and who worked nearby said in a video on the Kerch.tv website that he heard “a bang and shots.”Sergei, whose shirt was covered in blood, said victims “were taken away in public transport, in minibuses and buses, with two or three people in each ambulance.”“They are children and staff,” the witness said. “I saw people without legs, without arms.”Russian Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova headed to the area to help coordinate assistance to the wounded and helicopters carrying emergency medical teams flew to the area.Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine triggered Western sanctions. Russia has also supported separatists fighting the Ukrainian government in eastern Ukraine, a conflict that has left at least 10,000 people dead since 2014.Over the past few years, Russian security agencies have arrested several Ukrainians accused of plotting terror attacks in Crimea, but no attacks have occurred.
Turkish police search Saudi consul’s home in probe of missing journalist-Search of official residence comes after investigators examined Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul for clues on Jamal Khashoggi’s fate-By AFP-TOI-18 October 2018
ISTANBUL — Turkish police on Wednesday began a search at the residence of the Saudi consul to Istanbul, in the investigation into the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the kingdom’s consulate in the city, according to an AFP correspondent.A team of a dozen police and prosecutors, including forensics experts in white overalls, entered the residence of Mohammed al-Otaibi, a day after he flew out of Istanbul for Riyadh. Al-Otaibi left for Riyadh on a scheduled Saudia flight Tuesday afternoon, with Ankara insisting he had not been expelled.Earlier in the day, a Saudi delegation had also arrived at the building to take part in what is presented as a joint search with their Turkish counterparts.Turkish police had on Monday searched the consulate building itself for over eight hours, taking away soil and DNA samples for further examination.Khashoggi, a former regime insider who became critical of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, wrote articles for titles including the Washington Post. He has not been seen since he stepped inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.Turkish officials have said they believe he was killed there although this has not been confirmed by Saudi Arabia.

NewsAlert: Streamlined pardon process for marijuana possession convictions on the way-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-October 17, 2018
OTTAWA — The federal government promises it will soon be quicker — and less expensive — to obtain a criminal pardon for simple pot possession convictions of the past.Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale says coming legislation will waive the waiting period and fee for those seeking a pardon for possession offences. The Liberals have faced pressure to address the pot pardon issue, including within their own caucus, due to the effect of marijuana-related convictions on marginalized Canadians.Until now, simple possession of up to 30 grams of marijuana has been punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and six months in jail.Individuals have been eligible to apply for a pardon through the Parole Board of Canada five years after the conviction is handed down. But the waiting period and the $631 cost of applying for a pardon, known as a record suspension, have proven difficult for some people saddled with records. The Canadian Press.
Canada's cannabis rules: Here are the guidelines for every single province-Megan DeLaire-Yahoo Canada News-Oct. 17, 2018
After 95 years of prohibition, Canada is now the second country in the world where marijuana is legal nationwide. Uruguay set the precedent in 2013.According to the federal Cannabis Act, adults who are 18 years of age are older can carry up to 30 grams of marijuana in public, grow up to four plants at home and make their own edibles cannabis products.Legal user shouldn’t set much store by those guidelines though, because the Act gives the provinces and territories the ability to further restrict its legal framework by lowering the possession limit, increasing the minimum age of legal consumption, limiting where cannabis can be used in public and setting added requirements on personal cultivation. It’s also up to the provinces and territories who set rules around how it can be sold, where stores are located and how they’re operated. So in order to help Canadians keep their provincial and territorial pot laws straight, here is Yahoo Canada’s guide to the rules around legal cannabis in Canada, from coast, to coast to coast.Since clocks struck midnight in Newfoundland and Labrador first on legalization day, let’s start on the east coast and work our way west to British Columbia.
