Ontario reacts with mix of frustration, hope after Doug Ford's stunning victory-Jonathan Rumley-Yahoo Canada News-June 7, 2018

Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservative Party has won a majority government in Ontario, and the province is divided over the result. The NDP will form the Official Opposition for the first time in decades. As for the Liberals, they will move forward in search of a new leader after falling to third-place status after 15 years in power.“Tonight, the people of Ontario have spoken,” Ford told his supporters in Toronto. “We have sent a clear message to the world: Ontario is open for business.”Ford promised to bring in a new government that always puts the taxpayer first while ensuring “prosperity that will benefit every resident of Ontario.”“We will reduce your taxes, reduce your gas prices and keep more money in your pocket,” he said. The PC leader added he will work hard to earn the confidence of those who didn’t support the Tories.Ford also mentioned his late brother, former Toronto mayor Rob Ford, who died in 2016 after a battle with cancer. He said he knew his brother was “looking down from heaven” and he was “just getting chills talking about him.”The PCs were elected in 76 ridings, which is more than the 63 seats required to secure a majority mandate.-Horwath vows to fight-Despite the polls showing strong support, the NDP finished in second place as they were elected in at least 39 ridings to form the Official Opposition after years of third-place finishes.NDP Leader Andrea Horwath told her supporters “the vast majority of Ontarians” didn’t vote for cuts and her party “will be the voice at Queen’s Park for all of those Ontarians.”She stressed she will keep fighting to “make life better for all of us” while promoting “change for the better” in the province.“I could not be more proud that we offered a positive vision,” Horwath said. “New voices, new ideas and a strong team of New Democrats working for you.”Wynne stepping down-Liberal Leader Kathleen Wynne announced she will be resigning as party leader just four years after capturing a majority government.“It is the right thing to do. There is another generation, and I’m passing the torch to that generation,” an emotional Wynne told her supporters. “I know tonight is not the moment we were looking for.”The Liberals are holding onto seven seats, one less than is required to retain official party status. Several cabinet ministers, including Yasir Naqvi, Glenn Thibeault, Steven Del Duca and Chris Ballard, have lost their seats. Wynne was re-elected in her own Toronto riding of Don Valley West.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau weighed in on the result, saying “Ontarians have voted for change.” Federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer said the PCs have put “an end to 15 years of Liberal mismanagement.” Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said Horwath will lead a “fiercely progressive Official Opposition.”Ontarians have voted for change – tonight I spoke with @fordnation to congratulate him on his election as Premier-designate. Looking forward to working together to create jobs & opportunity. https://t.co/UmzfthEy6H— Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau) June 8, 2018-Today, the people of Ontario elected a new @OntarioPCParty government, putting an end to 15 years of Liberal mismanagement. NDP and liberals would have destroyed Ontario.— Cjmartin——- (@Cjmarti93422337) June 8, 2018-I’m gonna be sick. I’m scared of what Doug Ford and the PCs have up their sleeves for Ontario. #ElectionsOntario— Ashton Lagleva (@AshtonLagl) June 8, 2018-The Ontario Liberals had been in power since 2003 when Dalton McGuinty won a landslide to defeat Ernie Eves and the PC party. McGuinty won twice more for the Liberals in 2007 (majority) and 2011 (minority) before Wynne secured a majority government for the Grits in 2014.The last time the PCs won was in 1999 when Mike Harris captured his second consecutive majority mandate after first winning in 1995. Since Harris was premier, the party has had five different leaders (Eves, John Tory, Tim Hudak, Patrick Brown and Ford), including three that finished second to the Liberals in elections. The NDP has only emerged victorious once in an Ontario election and that happened in 1990 under Bob Rae. They have since been regulated to third-party status after a devastating loss in 1995. Before 2018, Horwath has been unable to secure more than 21 seats for her party in an election since becoming party leader in 2009.Supporters of Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives react to his victory in the Ontario provincial election at his election night headquarters in Toronto on Thursday, June 7, 2018. In apparent snafu, IDF broadcasts classified papers, intel assessments-Army livestreams unedited footage from IDF chief's recent visit to Gaza border, including an intelligence officer's assessment of rocket fire and screens marked 'secret'-By Judah Ari Gross-JUN 7,18

The army this week published unedited footage of a visit by the IDF chief of staff to southern Israel last week on its official YouTube page, including shots of classified documents and an intelligence officer’s assessment of last week’s Gaza rocket fire, in an apparent slip-up.The military removed the video from its Hebrew-language YouTube page once they were alerted to the apparent mistaken broadcast. By that point it had already been watched by at least 60 people. The video was from a visit made by IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot to areas near the Gaza Strip on May 29, amid heavy cross-border fighting. As some 200 mortar shells and rockets were fired at southern Israel from the Gaza Strip, Eisenkot visited the surrounding area, meeting with senior officers and the heads of local governments.Later in the day, the military released footage of the visit, though it had heavily edited and redacted the video, cutting it down to 24 seconds, removing the audio, and blurring the classified documents and computer screens. On Monday, the Israel Defense Forces livestreamed approximately six unedited minutes of footage from this visit to the Gaza Division. The last minute and a half of the footage was filmed inside a control center in the Gaza Division.A lieutenant colonel in Military Intelligence could be seen and heard telling Eisenkot that the Iran-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas terrorist groups were responsible for the rocket fire, information that the IDF later made public. The intelligence officer also said the commander of Hamas’s elite Nukhba Force was involved, something the IDF had not said publicly before. In the shot were classified documents, screens showing IDF operational computer programs, a map, the faces of other intelligence officers, and a white board covered in what appeared to be codewords for different Gaza regions — all things that the military, as a matter of policy, blurs before publishing in order to prevent the information from being seen by foreign intelligence. The military also blurs the faces of intelligence officers, out of concerns that they could be identified and targeted. It was not clear how or why this sensitive information was broadcast on YouTube. The Israel Defense Forces refused to respond to a request for comment. This was the second time in less than a month that the military livestreamed something accidentally on its YouTube page.On May 24, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit broadcast footage from an event for parents of soldiers in its visual media branch, also apparently accidentally. In that case, however, no sensitive information appeared to be revealed. In both cases, the IDF was only alerted to the mistaken broadcasts when The Times of Israel called for comment.

IDF drops flyers warning Gazans not to join Friday border protests-Letters say nearing or crossing fence would have harmful consequences, calls on Gazans not to be 'exploited' to further goals of Hamas, Iran-By TOI staff and Judah Ari Gross-JUN 7,18

The Israeli Air Force on Thursday dropped flyers across the Gaza Strip calling on Palestinians not to take part in violent protests along the security fence, ahead of a mass demonstration expected near the border. The military expects thousands of Gaza residents to riot on Friday as part of the “March of Return,” a series of demonstrations supported by the Hamas terror group that rules Gaza and openly seeks to destroy Israel. This week, the march also commemorates Naksa Day, the anniversary of Israel’s victory against Arab armies in the 1967 Six Day War, which was officially marked on Tuesday. Mass protests were originally expected on that day, but they were delayed by organizers until Friday. In a statement, the army said it is “ready and prepared” for a number of scenarios along the fence and is “determined to protect the citizens of Israel and its sovereignty.”The army used the flyers to tell Gazans that Hamas is trying to use them and their children for its own political goals and to create “anarchy.”“A smart person is a person who considers the consequences of their actions ahead of time and decides on the course of action in which the benefit exceeds the damage,” it said. “If you consider that on the subject of nearing or crossing the fence, you will conclude that it is ill-advised and even harmful.”“For your own benefit, it is better for you to not take part in violent demonstrations along the border or cross it. And don’t let Hamas turn you into a tool for its narrow interests,” the army wrote on the flyers.“Behind those interests stands Shiite Iran, with its goal of setting fire to the region for its own religious and tribal interests,” the army writes.Earlier Thursday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended Israel’s use of live fire against protesters and said Hamas wants the Palestinian demonstrators to die.Netanyahu was questioned on the IDF’s response to the Gaza protests by an audience member at a London event hosted by think tank Policy Exchange.“We tried water cannons, we tried tear gas and none worked,” the premier replied, according to the Haaretz daily, adding that “given our record, we probably will figure out something.”“The last thing we want is violence [or] confrontation,” he said. When asked to further elaborate, Netanyahu said that “we tried other ways, it doesn’t work. Hamas wants them to die.”The weekly massive protests have been held on the border since March 30, including violent riots, attempts to breach the security fence and sending hundreds of flaming kites and balloons over the border, starting countless fires that have destroyed large swaths of land.Over 120 Gazans have been killed, including over 60 on May 14, the day the US moved its embassy. At least half of those killed since the protests began in March have been identified as members of Hamas or other terror groups.AFP contributed to this report.

Netanyahu: Hamas wants Gaza border protesters to die-Israeli leader, speaking to an audience in London, also says Syrian President Assad's regime is 'no longer immune' from Israeli retaliation-By TOI staff and AFP-JUN 7,18

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday defended Israel’s use of live fire against protesters on the Gaza border and said the Hamas terrorist group wants the Palestinian demonstrators to die.He also issued a warning to Syria’s Bashar Assad regime, saying his troops are “no longer immune” to an Israeli strike.Netanyahu was questioned on the IDF’s response to the Gaza protests by an audience member at a London event hosted by think tank Policy Exchange.“We tried water cannons, we tried tear gas and none worked,” the premier replied, according to the Haaretz daily, adding that “given our record, we probably will figure out something.”“The last thing we want is violence [or] confrontation,” he said. When asked to further elaborate, Netanyahu said that “we tried other ways, it doesn’t work. Hamas wants them to die.”Hamas, which rules Gaza and openly seeks to destroy Israel, has held weekly massive protests on the border since March 30, including violent riots, attempts to breach the security fence and sending hundreds of flaming kites and balloons over the border, starting countless fires that have destroyed large swaths of land.Over 110 Gazans have been killed, including over 60 on May 14, the day the US moved its embassy. At least half of those killed since the protests began in March have been identified as members of Hamas or other terror groups.Netanyahu, who was in London to meet with his counterpart British Prime Minister Theresa May and Foreign Minister Boris Johnson, also said at the event that Assad’s regime will pay for Iranian military entrenchment in Syria.“He is no longer immune, his regime is no longer immune. If he fires at us, we will destroy his forces,” Netanyahu said.“I think there is a new calculus that has to take place and Syria has to understand that Israel will not tolerate the Iranian military entrenchment in Syria against Israel,” he said.“The consequences are not merely to the Iranian forces there, but to the Assad regime as well,” he said, adding: “I think it’s something that he should consider very seriously.”Israel has been pledging for months to prevent Iran from entrenching itself militarily in Syria, where Tehran is backing Assad’s government. The Israel Air Force is believed to have carried out numerous airstrikes on Iranian positions in Syria.Last month, the two countries openly clashed when members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Forces fired dozens of rockets at Israeli positions in the Golan Heights, and Israel responded by striking Iranian targets in Syria.Netanyahu this week traveled to Germany, France, and the United Kingdom to lobby the European powers against the nuclear deal and to persuade the leaders to pressure Iran to leave Syria.

Palestinians hurl chairs, stones from Al-Aqsa Mosque, injuring tourist, cop-Two arrested after violent outbreak on Temple Mount; police searching for additional suspects in clashes-By Sue Surkes-TOI-JUN 7,18

Two Palestinians were arrested on Thursday after a group of men inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount hurled chairs, stones and other objects from the holy site, lightly hurting a tourist and an Israeli police officer. The tourist was hit in the leg and sent for medical treatment, police said.Police said the searches for additional suspects in the Temple Mount altercation were ongoing.Muslims are marking the holy month of Ramadan, during which political sensitivities are often particularly volatile.Thursday also marked the 51th anniversary of Israel’s capture of the Old City and the Western Wall during the 1967 Six Day War.The Temple Mount is the holiest site in Judaism and the third-holiest site in Islam. Under an arrangement in place since Israel’s victory in the 1967 war, non-Muslims are allowed to visit the site but not pray there.Jews are allowed to enter during limited hours, with police officers guiding them through a predetermined route. The Jewish worshipers are banned from praying, displaying religious symbols or raising the Israeli flag on the mount.Ramadan this year comes after weeks of violent clashes on the Gaza border.Israel says the violent protests are orchestrated by the Hamas terror group, which rules Gaza, and used as cover for attempted terror attacks and breaches of the border fence. The demonstrations were meant to end on May 15, but Hamas leaders have said they want them to continue.According to the Hamas-run health ministry, well over 100 Palestinians have died since the start of the weekly protests in March, which reached their peak on May 14 when 61 people died. At least half of those killed since the protests began in March have been identified as members of Hamas or other terror groups.

As Hamas tensions heat up, IDF jets practice bombing ‘hundreds’ of Gaza targets-Air force simulated fighting wars on multiple fronts; military says exercise unrelated to current unrest in coastal enclave-By Judah Ari Gross-TOI-JUN 7,18
The Israeli Air Force simulated a large-scale conflict in the Gaza Strip this week as part of a nation-wide aerial exercise, as tensions ramp up in the Palestinian enclave after a massive flare-up last week, the army said.“As part of the southern portion of the exercise, dozens of fighter jets simulated strikes on hundreds of targets in the Gaza Strip in a short period of time,” the military said in a statement. The exercise included actual sorties over the Gaza Strip, with Israeli aircraft filming the coastal enclave. The Israel Defense Forces added that the air force also practiced giving support to troops in the case of a ground invasion of Gaza.Israel last fought a war with Hamas-led fighters in Gaza in 2014, the 50-day Operation Protective Edge. In recent months, tensions along the border have ramped up, including a day in late May that saw heavy mortar and rocket fire out of the Strip and Israeli bombing of dozens of sites in Gaza.Officials warned the flare-up could have easily snowballed into a larger conflict, something both sides say they do not seek.“We stood up to all the challenges and we are ready for any activity where we are needed,” said the head of the air force’s 105th Squadron, which operates F-16 fighter jets. The aerial drill, which kicked off Sunday, simulated warfare not only in the Gaza Strip, but also in the north, in Lebanon, and Syria, the army said. The military said the timing of the exercise was not tied to the recent unrest in the Strip, however, the army’s statement about the drill could be seen as a tacit threat to the Gaza-ruling Hamas terrorist group. The army said a central aspect of the exercise was to test the air force’s ability to operate in multiple fronts at the same time. In total, hundreds of fighter jets, helicopters, transport planes, and other aircraft took part in the multi-day exercise, which also included night missions.“In the past day, the [69th Air Squadron] simulated conducting targets in the Gaza Strip, as part of an exercise practicing the widespread outbreak of fighting for the air force,” according to an officer from the squadron whose name was gagged by military regulation.“We assisted ground troops in their maneuvers during the [simulated] fighting. The planes were equipped with precision bombs, which allows us to strike many targets in a short amount of time,” the officer said.On Sunday, the army announced it was launching not only the air force drill, but also a large ground-based exercise in southern Israel. The exercises came amid peak tensions in the Gaza border area, following multiple exchanges of mortar and rocket fire and violence along the security fence. The military on Thursday also said it expects significant renewed violence along the Gaza security fence on Friday.Last Saturday night and early Sunday morning, after six projectiles were fired overnight at southern Israel by Palestinian terror groups in the coastal enclave — shattering an unofficial ceasefire agreement — Israeli jets carried out two rounds of airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, the army said. The Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted four of the projectiles, with another apparently landing in Israeli territory and one failing to clear the Gaza border, the army said.In response to the first two rockets, the air force carried out 10 airstrikes on Hamas targets in Gaza.A few hours later, Israeli air raids targeted “five terror targets in a military compound belonging to the naval force of the terror group Hamas in the northern Gaza Strip,” the IDF said. The rocket attacks throughout the night sent thousands of Israelis to bomb shelters as sirens were repeatedly triggered to warn of incoming fire. The army said it held Hamas, which rules the Strip, responsible for the rocket attacks. The renewed rocket fire followed significant clashes on the Gaza border on Friday and a massive flareup on May 29, in which Palestinian terror groups launched over 100 rockets and mortar shells into southern Israel and the military responded by striking more than 65 Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad sites in the Strip. In response to the rocket attack on Saturday evening, the IDF launched its first strikes on targets throughout the Gaza Strip just before midnight.“The IDF, using fighter jets, attacked 10 terror targets in three compounds belonging to the Hamas terror group in the Gaza Strip. Among the targets that were attacked were two sites used to manufacture and store weapons and a military compound,” the army said.According to the Hamas-affiliated Shehab news agency, the planes struck sites in Gaza City’s Shejaiya neighborhood, in the Nuseirat refugee camp, and outside the city of Khan Younis. The Palestinian Quds news site also reported Israeli strikes outside the city of Rafah. There were no immediate reports of casualties.A video posted on social media reportedly showed the bombing in Shejaiya, which sent a large fireball into the sky.The rocket launches from Gaza appeared to be the first violation of a fragile ceasefire in effect since Wednesday morning, but came after a weekend of intense violence along the border. On the Palestinian side of the border last Saturday, thousands attended a funeral for a young female volunteer medic who Palestinians say was shot and killed by the IDF while she was tending to the injured during violent protests on the Gaza border. The border tension comes following a week that saw the worst escalation of violence between Israel and Hamas since the 2014 war in Gaza. Palestinian terror groups on Wednesday and Thursday fired more than 100 rockets and mortars at towns and cities in southern Israel, and the IDF responded with dozens of airstrikes on Hamas military targets.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

Assad no longer immune if he harbors Iranian forces, Netanyahu warns-Prime minister says Israel will destroy Syria's troops, criticizes west Europe for 'living in the past' and not understanding that the Middle East is realigning to counter Tehran-By AFP-TOI-JUN 7,18

LONDON — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday warned Syrian President Bashar Assad was “no longer immune” from retaliation, while declaring the Iran nuclear deal is over after Washington ditched the accord.Noting that Israel had stayed out of Syria’s protracted civil war, in which Tehran backs Assad, Netanyahu said increasing Iranian encroachment required “a new calculus.”“He is no longer immune, his regime is no longer immune. If he fires at us, as we’ve just demonstrated, we will destroy his forces,” the Israeli leader said at an event organized by the Policy Exchange think tank in London.Last month, Israel launched a large-scale attack on purported Iranian targets in Syria following what it said was a barrage of rockets fired by Iran from the country toward its forces on the Golan Heights.Even before that, Israel had been blamed for a series of recent strikes inside Syria that killed Iranians, though it has not acknowledged them. The strikes reportedly hit Iranian military assets and warehouses.“Syria has to understand that Israel will not tolerate the Iranian military entrenchment in Syria against Israel,” Netanyahu added.“The consequences are not merely to the Iranian forces there but to the Assad regime as well,” he said, adding: “I think it’s something that he should consider very seriously.”Netanyahu is on a three-day European tour — visiting Berlin and Paris earlier this week — marked by strategic differences on Iran, as its leaders attempt to rescue the nuclear deal after US withdrawal in May.He met Wednesday with British Prime Minister Theresa May, who reiterated London’s “firm commitment” to the accord, according to Downing Street. But the Israeli leader said Thursday “the weight of the American economy” was already dooming “this very bad agreement.”“It’s a done deal — in the other meaning of the word,” he added, noting companies were already pulling out of Iran under threat of damaging US sanctions.“You have to choose whether to do business with Iran, or forego doing business with the United States… that’s a no-brainer and everybody’s choosing it effectively as we speak.”Netanyahu said he had reiterated his dislike for the 2015 deal, which offers sanctions relief in exchange for strict limits on Iran’s nuclear activities. However, the focus of his discussions in Europe had been on reducing Iran’s presence in Syria, he added.“I found considerable agreement on that goal.”At the same time, he criticized his European hosts for an outdated approach to the region.Netanyahu said Iranian expansion had led to a “realignment” of relations with Arab states in the Middle East who also oppose Tehran — something Britain and western Europe were “evidently not understanding.”“There is a whole realignment taking place in the Middle East — they’re sort of stuck in the past,” he added, displaying a map of the world with numerous countries highlighted to show Israel’s “expanding diplomatic horizons.”“I think there’s a west European problem with recognizing that the world is changing,” he said.

Rescue work at Guatemala volcano interrupted, death toll hits 100-[Reuters]-By Sofia Menchu-YAHOONEWS-June 7, 2018

SAN MIGUEL LOS LOTES, Guatemala (Reuters) - The search for survivors from deadly eruptions of Guatemala's Fuego volcano was temporarily suspended on Thursday due to dangerous conditions for rescue workers, as the death toll from the disaster reached 100, authorities said.Residents should stay away from the still-dangerous area, said David de Leon, a spokesman for national disaster management agency CONRED.The toll of dead from a series of eruptions that began on Sunday has been gradually rising and now stands at 100, police said.Rescue teams have been searching frantically for survivors and victims in the lava-ravaged landscape. The violent eruptions showered volcanic ash over nearby towns and spewed pyroclastic flows throughout the area. The U.S. government expressed its "deepest condolences" to the victims on Thursday and said it was sending emergency aid at Guatemala's request, including an unspecified amount of financial resources to help meet food, water, and sanitation needs. The White House said in a statement that it was also dispatching aircraft to transport burn victims for treatment in Florida. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) raised concerns about the economic cost of the disaster in the poor Central American country."We should not underestimate the scale of this disaster. Critical, emergency needs are still enormous, and affected communities will need sustained and long-term support," IFRC president Francesco Rocca said in a statement on Thursday.Rocca noted that ash had fallen across more than half of Guatemala, covering areas where agriculture is crucial."We hope it will not mean a secondary disaster," he said. The IFRC has pledged more than 250,000 Swiss francs ($253,000) to support rescue efforts, and said those worst hit would need at least a year to recover. The suspension of rescue efforts around the volcano may be lifted if conditions on the ground improve, CONRED said.Fuego, or "Fire" in Spanish, lies about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of the capital, Guatemala City, near the picturesque colonial city of Antigua, a UNESCO world heritage site. The 3,763-meter (12,346-feet) peak is one of several active volcanoes among 34 in Guatemala.(Reporting by Sofia Menchu; editing by Jonathan Oatis and Rosalba O'Brien)

Volcanic lava buries two housing tracts on Hawaii's Big Island-[Reuters]-By Terray Sylvester-YAHOONEWS-June 6, 2018

PAHOA, Hawaii (Reuters) - An ever-creeping wall of lava from Kilauea Volcano has engulfed two entire seaside housing tracts at the eastern tip of Hawaii's Big Island, government scientists reported on Wednesday, an area where civil defense officials said nearly 280 homes once stood. The obliteration of the Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland subdivisions by a river of molten rock some 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.6 meters) tall brings to at least 400 the number of homes and other structures consumed by lava during the past month. That latest toll of property losses from Kilauea's ongoing upheaval, which entered its 35th day on Wednesday, far surpasses the 215 structures destroyed by lava during all 35 years of the volcano's last eruption cycle, which began in 1983."Vacationland is gone, there's no evidence of any properties there at all," Wendy Stovall, a vulcanologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), told reporters on a conference call. At the adjacent Kapoho Beach Lots to the north. "Just a few homes" are left standing, she added.County property tax records show a total of 279 homes existed in the two subdivisions combined, according to David Mace, a Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesman currently assigned to the Hawaii County Civil Defense authority.Several miles (km) to the west, another 130 homes have been confirmed destroyed in and around the Leilani Estates community, where lava-spouting fissures in the ground first opened May 3 on the volcano's lower flank, according to civil defense officials.Mace said property losses in the east-end developments of Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland have yet to be officially documented. The two communities, comprising a quiet vacation spot once popular for its snorkeling and tide pools, sat at the edge of a small, shallow inlet called Kapoho Bay. Lava pouring into the ocean there has completely filled in the bay, extending nearly a mile (1.6 km) out from what had been the shoreline, USGS scientists said.Plumes of white steam and hydrochloric acid fumes, a vaporous, corrosive mix formed from lava reacting with seawater as it enters the ocean, could be seen rising from a distance.'EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER'-Authorities began evacuating the Kapoho area last week, with most residents ushered to safety by early on Saturday, hours before lava severed all road access to the region."I just locked my doors and walked away," said Betty Oberman, a 28-year Vacationland resident who headed the neighborhood watch group there. "It's an emotional roller coaster."The river of lava then spread out into a towering blob about a half-mile (800 meters) wide as it crept through the flat, open expanse of the subdivisions, swallowing everything in its path over the next few days.A handful of residents who initially stayed behind rather than heed evacuation orders were airlifted by helicopter on Sunday. Most of the two dozen volcanic vents have grown largely quiet over the past week, with just one, Fissure 8, still spewing large volumes of molten rock from the ground as of Wednesday, the USGS said. That fissure is the origin of the lava flow that devastated Kapoho.Lava had covered nearly 8 square miles (20.7 sq km) of landscape as of Monday, and some 9,900 earthquakes had been recorded on the Big Island since Kilauea rumbled back to life last month. That's nearly 10 times the monthly historic average for seismic activity on Hawaii Island, the USGS said.(Additional reporting and writing by Steve Gorman in Los Angeles; Editing by Bill Tarrant and Michael Perry)

Superbug infections rising among injection drug users-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-June 7, 2018

NEW YORK — One type of superbug bacteria is increasingly spreading among people who inject drugs, according to a new government report.Users of heroin and other injection drugs were 16 times more likely than other people to develop severe illnesses from MRSA, said the report published Thursday."Drug use has crept up and now accounts for a substantial proportion of these very serious infections," said Dr. William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University, one of the study's authors. The U.S. is in the midst of its deadliest drug epidemic ever. While overdose deaths have been the main concern, some studies have noted HIV and hepatitis C infections are spreading among drug users. The authors say the new report is one of the first — and the largest — to highlight how superbug bacterial infections are spreading, too.MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, often live on the skin without causing symptoms. But they can become more dangerous if they enter the bloodstream, destroying heart valves or causing other damage. Health officials have tied MRSA to as many as 11,000 U.S. deaths a year.Public health efforts have focused on MRSA's spread in hospitals and nursing homes, and infection-control campaigns have been credited for recent drops in MRSA infections at health care facilities. But as that success story has unfolded, MRSA infections tied to illicit drug use have risen. The opioid epidemic began with abuse of prescription pain pills, but in recent years has shifted to heroin and other injectable drugs.MRSA "is on the skin, and as the needle goes into the skin it brings the bacteria with it," explained Dr. Isaac See of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, another of the study's authors. The proportion of invasive, bloodstream-infecting MRSA cases that occurred among injection drug users more than doubled in five years, the study found. In 2011, 4 per cent of those MRSA cases involved injection drug users; in 2016, the proportion was 9 per cent .The report is based on infections diagnosed at hospitals across Connecticut and in parts of California, Georgia, Minnesota, New York and Tennessee. Data were collected from 2005 through 2016.About 39,000 invasive MRSA cases were reported, including about 2,100 among people who inject drugs.___The Associated Press Health & Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Department of Science Education. Putin says Russia troops to stay in Syria ‘as long as it is beneficial’-President says despite large-scale hostilities ceasing, staying will provide 'invaluable experience' in testing new weapons-By AFP-JUN 7,18

MOSCOW, Russia — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday said the country’s forces would remain in Syria as long as it was in Moscow’s interests, despite earlier announcing Russia’s mission in the war-torn country was largely completed.“Our military is there to ensure Russia’s interests in an important region of the world,” Putin said in a response to a question during an annual televised phone-in with the Russian public.“They will stay there as long as it is beneficial to Russia and to ensure our international obligations. We are not planning to withdraw yet,” he said. The president said the continued presence of Russian troops in the country would provide “invaluable experience” in the testing of new Russian weapons. But he added that large-scale hostilities had ceased and a peaceful settlement was on the agenda. The Russian president first launched a military intervention in Syria in 2015, turning the tables in the multi-front civil war in favor of ally President Bashar Assad. In December last year, Putin made a surprise visit to Russia’s Hmeimim airbase in Latakia, Syria where he ordered a partial pullout of the country’s troops, saying their mission there was mainly completed.Putin first said in March 2016 that the country’s military campaign in Syria was coming to an end.In March this year, the defense ministry said a total of 2,954 Russian troops in Syria had voted in presidential polls, giving an idea of current numbers.Officials and observers also point out the presence of a “shadow army” of Russian mercenaries in Syria, including those working for a private military company called Wagner.

Iran shows off centrifuges as nuclear deal founders-Head of Iranian atomic agency gives interview from Natanz facility with advanced uranium enrichment equipment on display-By Jon Gambrell-TOI-JUN 7,18

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The star of a live television interview in Iran’s new nuclear workshop wasn’t the head of the country’s atomic agency, but the three centrifuges labeled in English in the background, advanced devices Tehran is prohibited from using by the nuclear deal with world powers. The placement of the centrifuges, identified as IR-2M, IR-4, and IR-6, may have served as a subtle warning to Europe as it tries to salvage the atomic accord after US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from it and restore US sanctions. In recent days Iranian officials from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on down have vowed to boost the country’s uranium enrichment capacity. The moves they have outlined would not violate the 2015 nuclear accord, but would allow Iran to quickly ramp up enrichment if the agreement unravels.“I think they’ve been quite clear in saying that if the US pulls out and the EU doesn’t live up to its side of the deal, it will rapidly increase its enrichment capacity,” said Ian Stewart, the head of a nuclear proliferation study called Project Alpha at King’s College London. “It doesn’t mean that it would go for nuclear weapons, but it does mean they could rapidly do that if they chose to do so.”Under the nuclear deal with world powers, Iran accepted limits to its uranium enrichment and gave up its stockpiles in exchange for the lifting of crippling international sanctions. Western nations and Israel have long suspected Iran of covertly seeking a nuclear weapons capability alongside its civilian program. Iran has always insisted its nuclear program is for purely peaceful purposes like electricity and the production of medical isotopes. However, in April Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed over 100,000 Iranian documents and files, spirited out of Tehran by Israeli intelligence, the contents of which he said confirmed that Iran had for years been actively working to build nuclear weapons, before signing the accord. In the 2015 agreement, Iran agreed only to enrich uranium up to 3.67 percent, enough to use in a nuclear power plant but far lower than the 90% needed for an atomic weapon.Iran also mothballed much of its centrifuges, the devices it uses to enrich uranium by rapidly spinning uranium hexafluoride gas. Today at Natanz, its main enrichment facility, Iran can run only 5,060 of them. Those centrifuges are models known as IR-1s, based on a 1970s Dutch design that Pakistani scientist A.Q. Khan used to build Islamabad’s nuclear weapons program and later sold to Iran, Libya, and North Korea. The IR-2M, IR-4, and IR-6 models are all believed to produce three to five times more enriched uranium in a year than the IR-1s, according to Western anti-proliferation experts.Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of Iran’s nuclear agency, said Wednesday night that the IR-6 is 10 times more effective than the IR-1.During the live state television interview at Natanz, a nuclear facility with underground bunkers protected from airstrikes, Salehi said a new workshop there that was nearly ready to open could build 60 centrifuges a day. He said it could build all three of the displayed models. It wasn’t clear whether the centrifuges displayed were working models of the IR-2M, IR-4 and IR-6, though they resembled pictures of the three previously circulated by Iranian media.“The IR-2M and the IR-4 have passed the research and development period and we can mass produce them, but due to the [nuclear deal], we don’t do it yet,” Salehi said. He said the IR-6 had some faults but could be mass produced after solving them. Not on display was the IR-8, one of Iran’s most advanced prototypes, which Western experts believe is at least 16 times more effective than the IR-1. A 2016 report by Iran’s pro-reformist Arman newspaper described the IR-8 as 24 times more effective.Salehi said the IR-8 was too big to be produced in the new workshop, though another workshop could be built nearby for it. He said that model remained years from mass production. For now, Iran remains within the terms of the nuclear deal. But if it falls apart, nothing would prevent Iran from immediately using these advanced centrifuges — and potentially raising the risks of a confrontation with the West.“If you have a smaller number of very advanced centrifuges, it’s easier for you to enrich in a secret location,” Stewart said.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

8 Israelis among nearly 500 arrested over alleged online fraud in Phillipines-Suspects allegedly lured victims to invest in foreign stocks, stole money through online app after obtaining bank account and credit card details-By AP-TOI-JUN 7,18

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine police say they have arrested nearly 500 people, including eight Israeli nationals, who they say are involved in an online financial fraud that victimized people overseas, including in Australia and South Africa. In one of the Philippines’ biggest anti-cybercrime busts in years, police chief Oscar Albayalde said Wednesday that 474 Filipino employees and the Israelis were taken into custody following the raid on three buildings in Clark Freeport, a former US Air Force base north of Manila, where the alleged online fraud was committed.Police Chief Superintendent Marni Marcos said the suspects lured victims into investing in foreign stocks in a flourishing London-based company, then took their money through an online app after obtaining their bank account and credit card details. The Israeli men were arrested “while in the act of managing, operating and manning the three target buildings” while the Filipinos were caught communicating and doing online transactions with foreign clients from Europe, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Russia, Albayalde said in a statement.Police video shows officers with assault rifles, backed by special forces units, barging into a vast office and repeatedly yelling “Hands up!” while ordering some of the suspects not to touch their computers. Some of the Israelis could be seen being led away in handcuffs.Police seized evidence from the computers showing they were “engaged in a fraudulent online trading activity that involves millions of US dollars victimizing other foreign nationals all over the world,” Albayalde said. State prosecutors were assessing criminal complaints against the suspects. Some foreign victims traveled to the Philippines and reported to the police details of the alleged fraud after obtaining information from some disgruntled syndicate members, Marcos told reporters.

Facebook confirms data sharing with Chinese companies-[Reuters]-By David Shepardson-YAHOONEWS-June 6, 2018

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Facebook Inc said Tuesday it has data sharing partnerships with at least four Chinese companies including Huawei, the world's third largest smartphone maker, which has come under scrutiny from U.S. intelligence agencies on security concerns. The social media company said Huawei Technologies Co Ltd , computer maker Lenovo Group <0992 .hk="">, and smartphone makers OPPO and TCL Corp <000100 .sz=""> were among about 60 companies worldwide that received access to some user data after they signed contracts to re-create Facebook-like experiences for their users.Members of Congress raised concerns after The New York Times reported on the practice on Sunday, saying that data of users' friends could have been accessed without their explicit consent. Facebook denied that and said the data access was to allow its users to access account features on mobile devices.More than half of the partnerships have already been wound down, Facebook said. It said on Tuesday it would end the Huawei agreement later this week. It is ending the other three partnerships with Chinese firms as well.Chinese telecommunications companies have come under scrutiny from U.S. intelligence officials who argue they provide an opportunity for foreign espionage and threaten critical U.S. infrastructure, something the Chinese have consistently denied.Senator Mark Warner, vice chairman of the Intelligence Committee, who asked Facebook if Huawei was among the companies that received user data, said in a statement that the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee had raised concerns about Huawei dating back in 2012."The news that Facebook provided privileged access to Facebook's API to Chinese device makers like Huawei and TCL raises legitimate concerns, and I look forward to learning more about how Facebook ensured that information about their users was not sent to Chinese servers," Warner said.API, or application program interface, essentially specifies how software components should interact.A Facebook executive said the company had carefully managed the access it gave to the Chinese companies."Facebook along with many other U.S. tech companies have worked with them and other Chinese manufacturers to integrate their services onto these phones," Francisco Varela, vice president of mobile partnerships for Facebook, said in a statement. "Facebook's integrations with Huawei, Lenovo, OPPO and TCL were controlled from the get-go — and we approved the Facebook experiences these companies built."Varela added that "given the interest from Congress, we wanted to make clear that all the information from these integrations with Huawei was stored on the device, not on Huawei's servers."Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said she would not comment on cooperation between companies and knew nothing of the situation."But we hope that the U.S. side can provide a fair, transparent, open and friendly environment for Chinese companies' investment and operational activities," Hua told reporters.RESPONSE DEMANDED FROM ZUCKERBERG-Earlier on Tuesday, the Senate Commerce Committee demanded that Facebook's chief executive officer, Mark Zuckerberg, respond to a report that user data was shared with at least 60 device manufacturers, weeks after the social media company said it would change its practices after a political firm got access to data from millions of users.Senators John Thune, the committee's Republican chairman, and Bill Nelson, the ranking Democrat, on Tuesday wrote to Zuckerberg after The New York Times reported that manufacturers were able to access data of users' friends even if the friends denied permission to share the information with third parties. In April, the Federal Communications Commission proposed new rules that would bar purchases by government programs from companies that it says pose a security threat to U.S. telecoms networks, a move aimed at Huawei and ZTE Corp <000063 .sz="">, China’s No. 2 telecommunications equipment maker. The Pentagon in May ordered retail outlets on U.S. military bases to stop selling Huawei and ZTE phones, citing potential security risks.ZTE was not among the firms that received access to Facebook data, but it has been the subject of U.S. national security concerns. The letter asks if Facebook audited partnerships with the device manufacturers under a 2011 consent order with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). It also asked if Zuckerberg wanted to revise his testimony before the Senate in April.Facebook said it looks forward to addressing any questions the Commerce Committee has.Facebook still has not answered hundreds of written questions submitted from members of Congress after Zuckerberg's testimony in April, according to congressional staff. The data sharing mentioned in the Times story was used over the last decade by about 60 companies, including Amazon.com Inc , Apple Inc , Blackberry Ltd , HTC Corp <2498 .tw="">, Microsoft Corp and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd <005930 .ks="">, Ime Archibong, Facebook vice president of product partnerships, wrote in a blog post on June 3.The FTC confirmed in March that it was investigating Facebook's privacy practices.Facebook allowed Apple and other device makers to have "deep" access to users' personal data without their consent, according to the Times. The Times said Facebook allowed companies access to the data of users' friends without their explicit consent, even after it had declared it would no longer share the information with outsiders.Archibong said the data was only shared with device makers in order to improve Facebook users' access to the information. "These partners signed agreements that prevented people’s Facebook information from being used for any other purpose than to recreate Facebook-like experiences."Regulators and authorities in several countries have increased scrutiny of Facebook after it failed to protect the data of some 87 million users that was shared with now-defunct political data firm Cambridge Analytica. Two Democrats on the Senate Commerce Committee, Edward Markey and Richard Blumenthal, on Monday also wrote to Zuckerberg.Archibong said the cases were "very different" from the use of data by third-party developers in the Cambridge row.New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood said on Monday the "data-sharing partnerships with other corporations" is part of the ongoing investigation into the reported misuse of Facebook user data by Cambridge Analytica.(This version of the story corrects second paragraph to insert ticker for Huawei Technologies instead of Huawei Culture and adds full company name)(Reporting by David Shepardson; Additional reporting by Ben Blanchard in Beijing; Editing by Leslie Adler)
