Fifty-two Palestinians were killed Monday in violent clashes with Israeli forces along the Gaza Strip’s border with Israel, Palestinians said, in a burst of bloodshed that cast a cloud over Israel’s festive inauguration of the new US Embassy in Jerusalem.It was the deadliest day in Gaza since the devastating cross-border war between the territory’s Hamas rulers and Israel in 2014.Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said 52 Palestinians were killed and more than 1,2000 were wounded in the violence, amid the biggest riots and rallies in a weeks-long campaign of protests against Israel.The Israeli army said around 50,000 Gazans were demonstrating in 12 locations along the border. JERUSALEM — Israel on Sunday kicked off festivities to celebrate the opening of the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem, even as it bolstered its forces along the Gaza border and in the West Bank in anticipation of mass Palestinian protests of the move.A day before the embassy's formal opening, Israel hosted a gala party at its Foreign Ministry with President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka, her husband, Jared Kushner, and other American VIPs.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump's "bold decision" in upending decades of U.S. policy by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital. "It's the right thing to do," a smiling Netanyahu told the jubilant crowd.Trump announced his decision on Jerusalem in December, triggering a joyous reaction from Netanyahu's nationalist government. The Palestinian protests also mark the date as the anniversary of their "naqba," or catastrophe, when hundreds of thousands of people fled or were forced from their homes during the war surrounding the event. About two-thirds of Gaza's 2 million people are descendants of Palestinian refugees.A mass border breach could trigger potentially lethal Israeli force. Forty-two Palestinians have been killed and over 1,800 have been wounded by Israeli fire since the weekly protests began on March 30. The U.N., European Union and rights groups have accused Israel of using excessive force against unarmed protesters.Israel says it is protecting a sovereign border and accuses Hamas of using the unrest to plan and carry out attacks. Marchers have thrown stones and burned tires at the fence and flown flaming kites over it to try to set Israeli fields on fire.On Friday, a Palestinian crowd attacked the main cargo crossing between Israel and Gaza, disrupting shipments of cooking fuel, gasoline and building materials, and causing millions of dollars in damage. Israeli officials said it could take weeks or months to repair the crossing."Unfortunately, the crossing is closed today and will remain closed until the foreseeable future due to severe damage caused by Palestinian rioters," said Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, a military spokesman. "It is still unclear how long it will take to fix and replace the necessary parts."The Israeli military announced that it bolstered forces on the Gaza border with combat battalions, special units, intelligence forces and snipers. Israeli warplanes also dropped leaflets in Gaza, urging residents to stay far from the fence."You deserve a better government. You deserve a better future," the leaflets said. "Do not approach the security fence nor participate in the Hamas display that is putting you in risk."A high-ranking delegation of Gaza's Hamas rulers headed Sunday to Egypt, amid diplomatic efforts aimed at containing the mass rally. But one of the Hamas participants, Khalil al-Hayya, said there were no breakthroughs and the march would go on as planned Monday.The army said it was also reinforcing its troops in the West Bank with several combat battalions and intelligence units in case of possible unrest there as well.Sunday's celebrations coincided with Israel's "Jerusalem Day," the 51st anniversary of what it refers to the city's "unification" during the 1967 Mideast war.Israel immediately annexed east Jerusalem — home to the city's most sensitive Jewish, Muslim and Christian holy sites — in a move that has not received international recognition. The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem as the capital of a future state.In an annual ritual, tens of thousands of Israelis marched through Jerusalem's Old City to mark the day. TORONTO — At campaign events on Sunday, both Ontario's Liberal premier and the leader of the New Democratic Party refused to commit to the possibility of joining forces to form a coalition government should the Progressive Conservatives win a majority in the upcoming election.Premier Kathleen Wynne told supporters in Toronto's north end that in spite of "a lot of overlap" between the two parties, she would hesitate to team up with the New Democrats because their business taxes would make the province less competitive for trade.But Wynne also said that at just under a month until Ontarians head to the polls, it's too early to make a decision about a potential coalition."We're in Day 5 of the (30-day) campaign," Wynne said. The people on Hawaii’s Big Island are evacuating areas where there are high levels of sulfur dioxide leaking out of the lava emitted by the Kilauea Volcano. Lava, dangerous gases and earthquakes are all potential risks on the island, but if the weather changes, another risk will be added to that list—acid rain.“It’s reasonably normal for this volcano,” Mark Elliot a meteorologist for The Weather Channel, told Newsweek. The Kilauea Volcano is known for emitting a lot of sulfur dioxide, he added, though not all volcanoes have the same makeup.The gas can mix with the oxygen and any water vapor in the air, as well as with sunlight, to form sulfuric acid. “It’s an unsafe gas to breathe in too much of,” Elliot said, but luckily it’s a gas humans detect easily; the smell is similar to that of rotting eggs or fireworks. PAHOA, Hawaii (AP) — A new fissure emitting steam and lava spatter spurred Hawaii officials to call for more evacuations on Sunday as residents braced for an expected eruption from the Kilauea volcano.The Hawaii County Civil Defense issued an alert that an 18th fissure was discovered along a road west of a major highway on the Big Island. Residents on that road were being told to evacuate, and two nearby community centers were serving as shelters for people and pets.Popping, exploding and sloshing sounds could be heard from the fissure as far as 1,500 yards (1,400 meters) away.The fissures, ground deformation and abundant volcanic gases indicate eruptions on the eastern flank of Kilauea are likely to continue.The latest opening came the morning after two other fissures opened on Saturday. Water levels continue to drop and most areas could be below flood stage as early as Monday, according to New Brunswick's latest Riverwatch forecast. As floodwaters recede, more roads across the province are beginning to reopen.The City of Saint John reopened Westfield Road to traffic yesterday after it passed inspection. It closed after floodwaters took over the road.Almost half of the roads within city limits that were closed during flooding have now reopened, according to the city's Emergency Management Organization (EMO).In Fredericton, the road network has more or less returned to normal, spokesperson Wayne Knorr said Saturday. Saturday also marked the official end of the city's recommended evacuation for most homes, except for homes that are still surrounded by water in the areas of Tippet Drive, Farry Cove Road, Lawrence Long and Road by Road 7.Fredericton marathon goes ahead-In Fredericton, the annual marathon took place Sunday as planned but with a different route.While the race was supposed to close down Westmorland Street Bridge and other streets, the City of Fredericton asked race organizers to change course."The community has been under some stress and many roads have been closed for the better part of two weeks," said race director Paul Lavoie in a release on Fredericton Marathon's website."Closing the Westmorland Street Bridge and other streets would have created some additional difficulties this weekend," he said.Instead, the Boston Qualifying (BQ) certified route for the main events on Sunday consisted of the "out and back" route along a trail system to Penniac from Queen's Square Park, where the start and finish line is located.Latest water levels-By early Sunday morning, water levels were roughly 5.7 metres along the St. John River near Fredericton, down from six metres at the same time yesterday. SURABAYA, Indonesia — Co-ordinated suicide bombings carried out by members of the same family struck three churches in Indonesia's second-largest city Sunday, police said, as the world's most populous Muslim nation recoiled in horror at one of its worst attacks since the 2002 Bali bombings.At least seven people died at the churches in Surabaya along with the six family members, the youngest of whom were girls aged 9 and 12, according to police. Another 41 people were injured.Indonesia's president condemned the attacks as "barbaric."National police chief Tito Karnavian said that the father detonated a car bomb, two sons aged 18 and 16 used a motorcycle for their attack, and the mother and her two daughters wore explosives.Karnavian said the family had returned to Indonesia from Syria, where until recently the Islamic State group controlled significant territory.IS claimed responsibility for the attacks in a statement carried by its Aamaq news agency. SEOUL/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - North Korea has scheduled the dismantlement of its nuclear bomb test site for sometime between May 23 and 25 in order to uphold its pledge to discontinue nuclear tests, the country's state media reported on Saturday a month ahead of a historic summit.The official Korean Central New Agency said dismantlement of the Punggye-ri nuclear test ground would involve collapsing all of its tunnels with explosions, blocking its entrances, and removing all observation facilities, research buildings and security posts."The Nuclear Weapon Institute and other concerned institutions are taking technical measures for dismantling the northern nuclear test ground ... in order to ensure transparency of discontinuance of the nuclear test," KCNA said.U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will hold talks in Singapore on June 12, the first-ever meeting between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader.Trump's Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday that North Korea can look forward to "a future brimming with peace and prosperity" if it agrees to quickly give up its nuclear weapons.Trump welcomed the North Korean announcement."North Korea has announced that they will dismantle Nuclear Test Site this month, ahead of the big Summit Meeting on June 12th," he tweeted. Fifty-two Palestinians were killed Monday in violent clashes with Israeli forces along the Gaza Strip’s border with Israel, Palestinians said, in a burst of bloodshed that cast a cloud over Israel’s festive inauguration of the new US Embassy in Jerusalem.It was the deadliest day in Gaza since the devastating cross-border war between the territory’s Hamas rulers and Israel in 2014.Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said 52 Palestinians were killed and more than 1,2000 were wounded in the violence, amid the biggest riots and rallies in a weeks-long campaign of protests against Israel.The Israeli army said around 50,000 Gazans were demonstrating in 12 locations along the border. JERUSALEM — Israel on Sunday kicked off festivities to celebrate the opening of the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem, even as it bolstered its forces along the Gaza border and in the West Bank in anticipation of mass Palestinian protests of the move.A day before the embassy's formal opening, Israel hosted a gala party at its Foreign Ministry with President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka, her husband, Jared Kushner, and other American VIPs.Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump's "bold decision" in upending decades of U.S. policy by recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital. "It's the right thing to do," a smiling Netanyahu told the jubilant crowd.Trump announced his decision on Jerusalem in December, triggering a joyous reaction from Netanyahu's nationalist government. The move infuriated the Palestinians, who claim Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem as their capital.Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas halted ties with the Trump administration and declared it unfit to remain in its role as the sole mediator in peace talks.The rival Hamas movement, which controls the Gaza Strip, has been staging a series of weekly demonstrations against a crippling Israeli-Egyptian blockade of the territory. Marchers have thrown stones and burned tires at the fence and flown flaming kites over it to try to set Israeli fields on fire.On Friday, a Palestinian crowd attacked the main cargo crossing between Israel and Gaza, disrupting shipments of cooking fuel, gasoline and building materials, and causing millions of dollars in damage. Israeli officials said it could take weeks or months to repair the crossing."Unfortunately, the crossing is closed today and will remain closed until the foreseeable future due to severe damage caused by Palestinian rioters," said Lt. A delegation that included U.S. President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner has arrived in Israel for the official opening ceremony of the new U.S. embassy in Jerusalem.The White House senior advisers landed on Sunday, along with U.S. Secretary Treasury Steven Mnuchin, for Monday's inauguration.The embassy is being relocated from Tel Aviv to southern Jerusalem's Arnona neighbourhood, fulfilling longtime U.S. plans, but the highly contentious move comes at the start of what will be a busy and potentially turbulent week in Israel.May 14 is the date on which Israel's independence as a country is marked on the Western or Gregorian calendar, versus the Hebrew calendar, which marks the date as April 19.On Tuesday, Palestinians traditionally commemorate the events of 1948 as the "catastrophe" or Nakba, a reference to the war 70 years ago that followed the birth of the modern Jewish state and resulted in thousands being driven from their homes.The embassy move is seen by many Palestinians as an in-your-face affirmation of pro-Israel bias by Trump and a new blow to dreams of statehood."The concern [this week] is that there could be potentially violent clashes in the Gaza Strip, in the West Bank and here in Jerusalem," said CBC's Derek Stoffel."As a result, the Israeli security forces, the army and police, have sent in reinforcements to various parts of the country ... as the protests could very well turn violent."As we've seen in the last seven Fridays, we've seen Palestinian protests, and more than 40 Palestinians have been killed, many shot by Israeli forces as they made their way toward the border fence that separates Gaza from Israel."The U.S. is moving its embassy to a holy city that is at the core of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and claimed by both sides as a capital.The inauguration comes five months after Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Trump will deliver a video address for the opening of the embassy, senior administration officials announced last Friday.Here is a snapshot of the city:Recent history-Jerusalem was partitioned after the Mideast war over Israel's 1948 creation, with Israel controlling the west and Jordan the east, including major shrines of Islam, Judaism and Christianity. In 1967, Israel captured East Jerusalem, along with the West Bank and Gaza Strip. It expanded the municipal boundaries into the West Bank, increasing the size of East Jerusalem and annexing it to its capital, a move not recognized by most of the international community.Since the 1990s, the fate of the city has been a core issue in U.S.-brokered talks on setting up a Palestinian state alongside Israel, with the Palestinians seeking East Jerusalem as a capital. Intermittent negotiations have failed, most recently in 2014, and chances of resuming them are slim. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he won't give up any part of the city, while Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says Trump's policy shift on Jerusalem disqualified the U.S. as a broker.Population-In 2016, Jerusalem was home to almost 883,000 people, 62 per cent of them Jews and non-Arabs and 38 per cent Palestinians. The Arab share of the population has grown steadily since 1967, in part because of a higher birth rate. After 1967, Israel built a ring of settlement neighbourhoods in East Jerusalem to deepen its hold over the annexed area, where 207,000 Jews now live.More than a decade ago, Israel built a West Bank separation barrier that slices through Arab neighbourhoods in East Jerusalem, forcing tens of thousands of Palestinian residents of the city to cross crowded checkpoints to get to downtown areas. The prevailing view, including by the European Union, is that the fate of the city must be determined in negotiations.In 1995, the U.S. Congress passed a bill with bipartisan support that recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and required the U.S. embassy to move there. Until now, U.S. presidents had signed a waiver every six months that put off the move on security grounds.The U.S. stance on East Jerusalem now has been thrown into confusion. In its December announcement, the Trump administration emphasized that recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital does not change its stance that the two sides must work out the city's final status. But Trump quickly appeared to contradict that, declaring, "We took Jerusalem off the table."Embassy's location-In their 1949 armistice agreement, Israel and Jordan drew a "Green Line" of partition through the city. In one area of southeastern Jerusalem, they couldn't agree and created a pentagon-shaped "area between the lines."The new embassy will operate temporarily from the U.S. consulate compound, which is partially located in the old no-man's land and partially in west Jerusalem. The people on Hawaii’s Big Island are evacuating areas where there are high levels of sulfur dioxide leaking out of the lava emitted by the Kilauea Volcano. Lava, dangerous gases and earthquakes are all potential risks on the island, but if the weather changes, another risk will be added to that list—acid rain.“It’s reasonably normal for this volcano,” Mark Elliot a meteorologist for The Weather Channel, told Newsweek. The Kilauea Volcano is known for emitting a lot of sulfur dioxide, he added, though not all volcanoes have the same makeup.The gas can mix with the oxygen and any water vapor in the air, as well as with sunlight, to form sulfuric acid. “It’s an unsafe gas to breathe in too much of,” Elliot said, but luckily it’s a gas humans detect easily; the smell is similar to that of rotting eggs or fireworks. Residents on that road were being told to evacuate, and two nearby community centers were serving as shelters for people and pets.Popping, exploding and sloshing sounds could be heard from the fissure as far as 1,500 yards (1,400 meters) away.The fissures, ground deformation and abundant volcanic gases indicate eruptions on the eastern flank of Kilauea are likely to continue.The latest opening came the morning after two other fissures opened on Saturday. Most of the lava outbreaks have occurred in and around the Leilani Estates neighborhood, where molten rock has burst through the ground, destroying more than two dozen homes and resulting in evacuation orders for nearly 2,000 people.The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the 17th fissure, which opened Saturday night, was spattering but no flow had formed. Water levels continue to drop and most areas could be below flood stage as early as Monday, according to New Brunswick's latest Riverwatch forecast. As floodwaters recede, more roads across the province are beginning to reopen.The City of Saint John reopened Westfield Road to traffic yesterday after it passed inspection. It closed after floodwaters took over the road.Almost half of the roads within city limits that were closed during flooding have now reopened, according to the city's Emergency Management Organization (EMO).In Fredericton, the road network has more or less returned to normal, spokesperson Wayne Knorr said Saturday. Saturday also marked the official end of the city's recommended evacuation for most homes, except for homes that are still surrounded by water in the areas of Tippet Drive, Farry Cove Road, Lawrence Long and Road by Road 7.Fredericton marathon goes ahead-In Fredericton, the annual marathon took place Sunday as planned but with a different route.While the race was supposed to close down Westmorland Street Bridge and other streets, the City of Fredericton asked race organizers to change course."The community has been under some stress and many roads have been closed for the better part of two weeks," said race director Paul Lavoie in a release on Fredericton Marathon's website."Closing the Westmorland Street Bridge and other streets would have created some additional difficulties this weekend," he said.Instead, the Boston Qualifying (BQ) certified route for the main events on Sunday consisted of the "out and back" route along a trail system to Penniac from Queen's Square Park, where the start and finish line is located.Latest water levels-By early Sunday morning, water levels were roughly 5.7 metres along the St. John River near Fredericton, down from six metres at the same time yesterday. DUBAI (Reuters) - An Iranian court on Sunday sentenced eight men to death over attacks that killed 18 people at the parliament and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's mausoleum last year, in the first deadly operation by Islamic State in the country.The sentence, issued by a Revolutionary Court after a seven-session hearing, can be appealed in Iran's Supreme Court, Musa Ghazanfarabadi, head of Tehran's Revolutionary Court, told state television.Ghazanfarabadi said courts will hear claims later filed by families of the victims against the United States and Saudi Arabia, which mainly Shi'ite Muslim Iran accuses of supporting Sunni Muslim militant group Islamic State. SEOUL/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - North Korea has scheduled the dismantlement of its nuclear bomb test site for sometime between May 23 and 25 in order to uphold its pledge to discontinue nuclear tests, the country's state media reported on Saturday a month ahead of a historic summit.The official Korean Central New Agency said dismantlement of the Punggye-ri nuclear test ground would involve collapsing all of its tunnels with explosions, blocking its entrances, and removing all observation facilities, research buildings and security posts."The Nuclear Weapon Institute and other concerned institutions are taking technical measures for dismantling the northern nuclear test ground ... in order to ensure transparency of discontinuance of the nuclear test," KCNA said.U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will hold talks in Singapore on June 12, the first-ever meeting between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader.Trump's Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday that North Korea can look forward to "a future brimming with peace and prosperity" if it agrees to quickly give up its nuclear weapons.Trump welcomed the North Korean announcement."North Korea has announced that they will dismantle Nuclear Test Site this month, ahead of the big Summit Meeting on June 12th," he tweeted.
