Dianne Feinstein blasts Nikki Haley for stopping UN Gaza query-Senator slams US Jerusalem embassy opening as a 'serious mistake'; Bernie Sanders says Palestinians have 'right to return to their former homes inside Israel'-By Ron Kampeas-TOI-MAY 17,18
WASHINGTON (JTA) — Senator Dianne Feinstein said she was “deeply disappointed” in Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, for stopping the UN Security Council from investigating Israeli actions on the border with the Gaza Strip.“I’m deeply disappointed in Ambassador Haley’s decision to block a UN inquiry into yesterday’s events,” Feinstein, who is Jewish, said Tuesday in a statement. “Without question there should be an independent investigation when the lives of so many are lost.”The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said 60 Palestinians were killed in the violent demonstrations at the fence between Gaza and Israel on Monday, the same day that the United States dedicated its new embassy in Jerusalem, and two were killed on Tuesday.Israel accused Hamas of organizing the protests and using them as cover to carry out attacks and damage security infrastructure, pointing to a video in which a Hamas official said 50 of the 62 Palestinians reported killed in clashes on Monday and Tuesday were members of the terror group. The protests at the fence have been held weekly for close to two months, but intensified on the day of the embassy opening, leading to condemnations worldwide of Israel and the United States.Haley used the threat of a US veto on the Security Council to block proposals for an inquiry and berated the council for even considering the issue.“I ask my colleagues here in the Security Council, who among us would accept this type of activity on your border?” Haley said.“No one would,” she said. “No country in this chamber would act with more restraint than Israel has. In fact, the records of several countries here today suggest they would be much less restrained.”Haley said that those who blame the embassy opening for the Gaza violence are “sorely mistaken.”“The violence comes from those who reject the existence of the State of Israel in any location,” she said. “Such a motivation – the destruction of a United Nations Member State – is so illegitimate as to not be worth our time in the Security Council, other than the time it takes to denounce it.”Feinstein, a California Democrat, called on protesters to “remain peaceful,” but appeared to lay much of the blame on the embassy opening and what she suggested was a lack of restraint by Israel.“While protests must remain peaceful, Israeli forces must exercise greater restraint in the use of live ammunition,” she said. “President Trump’s decision to move the US embassy was a serious mistake that will reverberate throughout the region. US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital should have been resolved in the context of broader peace negotiations where both sides benefit.”Feinstein had voted for a 1995 law calling for the US to move its embassy and in June 2017 voted in favor of a bill saying “Jerusalem should remain the undivided capital.”Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, in a video posted on social media, also juxtaposed the embassy opening with the violence on the Gaza border. “The embassy move brought tensions to a boiling point,” the Sanders video said. The video described the protesters as “demanding an end to the ten-year blockade” Israel imposed on the Strip after a season of intensive rocket fire on Israel, “an end to the occupation, and the right to return to their former homes inside Israel.”In light of yesterday’s horrific violence in Gaza, in which more than 50 Palestinians were killed and more than 2000 wounded by Israeli snipers, it’s important to understand the desperate situation out of which these protests have arisen. pic.twitter.com/WLrlGxJKDo— Bernie Sanders (@SenSanders) May 15, 2018-The implied acceptance of a Palestinian claim to “former homes inside Israel” is unusual for a senior US lawmaker. Sanders, who in 2016 challenged Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination, is the first Jewish candidate to win major party nominating contests.“Young American Jewish activists protested the embassy move,” the video said, running footage of a protest by the left-wing IfNotNow group Monday in Washington, DC.The video said that Sanders and another 12 senators have written to US Secretary of State Mike Pomepo urging him to take steps to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.
Netanyahu shows off downed Iran drone in interview with Vice News-HBO cable network to air full interview with prime minister, including discussion of armed UAV shot down over northern Israel-By TOI staff-MAY 17,18
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday showed off an Iranian drone shot down by Israel, three months after the UAV’s incursion sparked massive Israeli airstrikes in Syria and the downing of an Israeli F-16.Netanyahu showed the remains of the drone to Vice News owner Shane Smith, displaying the full aircraft — or what is left of it — for the first time since it was shot down on February 10, in a clip released by the news outlet ahead of the interview’s broadcast on HBO later Wednesday.Netanyahu had previously used a wing from the drone as a prop during a speech to the Munich Security Conference in February.Israel claimed the drone was armed. The Iranian drone, which entered northern Israel from Syria near the Jordan border, was shot down by an Israeli attack helicopter. In response to the drone incursion, Israeli jets attacked the mobile command center in Syria from which it was operated, the army said.During the reprisal raid, one of the eight Israeli F-16 fighter jets that took part in the operation was apparently hit by a Syrian anti-aircraft missile and crashed. The Israeli Air Force then conducted a second round of airstrikes, destroying between a third and a half of Syria’s air defenses, according to IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus.Netanyahu held up the part of the drone in February and addressed Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif who was also in attendance at the Munich conference.“Mr. Zarif, do you recognize this? You should, it’s yours. You can take back with you a message to the tyrants of Tehran — do not test Israel’s resolve!” he said.Zarif responded to Netanyahu’s prop by calling it a “cartoonish circus” that did “not warrant a response.”Earlier this month Iranian forces fired some 20 rockets at northern Israeli military bases from southern Syria. The IDF said it suffered no casualties, either on the ground or in the air, and that no rockets fired from Syria made impact in Israeli territory. Four were intercepted by the Iron Dome defense system, and the other 16 fell short. In response the IDF hit over 50 targets in Syria, including Iranian intelligence sites, logistic centers, weapons depots, and military bases operated by the Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force.
Machine gun fire from Gaza hits nearby Israeli homes, no injuries-In separate incident, shots fired at troops on Gaza border, IDF tank responds by targeting Hamas position-By Judah Ari Gross-TOI-MAY 17,18
Several homes in the Israeli city of Sderot were hit by machine gun fire, apparently fired by by terrorists in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, causing damage but no injuries, the army said.According to the city of Sderot, the shots were aimed at an army aircraft that had been flying overhead, and the bullets struck the homes as they fell back down to earth.“A short while ago, shots were fired at an [Israel Defense Forces] aircraft. Rounds hit a number of homes in Sderot,” the city said in a statement. This was the second shooting of the day to come out of the Gaza Strip.Earlier, shots were fired at Israeli soldiers stationed on the border, according to the army. There were no reports of injuries. In response, an IDF tank fired on a Hamas military position in the northern Gaza Strip, the military said. The bullets that hit Sderot, a city in southern Israel that has frequently been the site of rocket attacks over the past 20 years, were large caliber rounds that were fired from a heavy machine gun by members of a terrorist group in Gaza, the IDF said. The army would not immediately comment on whether the aircraft had also been hit in the shooting attack.“The IDF sees this as a serious event and holds Hamas responsible for everything that occurs in the Gaza Strip,” the army said.In one case, a bullet shattered a window. In others, the rounds smashed into external walls, according to pictures of the houses posted on social media. One of the homes hit belonged to a former mayor Sderot, Eli Moyal, who told the Ynet news site he heard a “terrible noise” and when he ran outside to see what had happened he found bullet fragments.Police were called to the scenes, sealing off the areas around the homes that were hit as forensic investigators were called in.The army said it was investigating the issue in order to determine the origins of the gunfire. The two shootings followed two days of clashes along the Gaza border. On Monday, over 40,000 Palestinians took part in “unprecedentedly” violent riots along the security fence, which included at least one gun battle with Israeli troops, as well as attempts to infiltrate into Israeli territory and to plant improvised explosive devices along the border, the army said.On Tuesday, approximately 4,000 people rioted along the border, throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails at Israeli troops on the other side of the fence.Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said 62 people were killed in the demonstrations on Monday and Tuesday, 53 of whom were later identified as members of Hamas or the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
Palestinians blast Guatemala over Jerusalem embassy opening-Saeb Erekat accuses 'fundamentalist' Central American country of violating international law and using Christianity to justify move-By TOI staff-MAY 17,18
The Palestinians castigated Guatemala over the opening of its Jerusalem embassy earlier Wednesday, accusing the Central American nation of violating international law and using Christianity to justify the move.“The Guatemalan government has chosen to stand on the wrong side of history, to side with violations of international law and human rights, and to take a hostile step against the Palestinian people and the Arab World,” said Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat.Guatemala’s opening of its embassy in Jerusalem made it the second country to do so after the United States, which inaugurated its mission on Monday.Wednesday’s embassy opening was attended by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales, who touted the move as “a new era in relations between us.”Erekat accused Guatemala of using a “fundamentalist” Christianity to justify what he called a violation of internal resolutions.“The narrative presented by the Guatemalan government to justify this move also reflects its alliance with the Israeli occupation and right-wing fundamentalists. The fact that they have used the Bible and Christianity as an excuse to move the embassy to Jerusalem in contradiction to the position of the Holy See, 13 churches in Jerusalem as well as from a number of Christian religious leaders worldwide, highlights the fundamentalist nature of the Israeli regime and its allies such as the Guatemalan government,” said Erekat. He said the Palestinians will consult with the Arab League, Organization of the Islamic Conference, and others regarding the move, saying “appropriate measures will be taken.”Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s executive committee, also attacked Guatemala over the embassy opening, saying it will allow Israel to continue with the “total annexation and isolation of Palestinian Jerusalem.”“The Guatemalan government has positioned itself alongside Israel and its war crimes, defying international law and supporting the military occupation and the illegal annexation of Jerusalem by relocating its embassy to occupied Jerusalem,” she said, according to the official Wafa news agency. The Palestinian criticism of Guatemala came as the Palestinian Authority recalled its ambassadors from Romania, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria in protest of their envoys’ presence at a Foreign Ministry reception Sunday celebrating the embassy openings. The Palestinians also withdrew their ambassador to the US on Tuesday. The embassy openings have been strongly opposed by the Palestinians and much of the international community. The Palestinians claim East Jerusalem, which Israel captured from Jordan in the 1967 Six Day War.US President Donald Trump has said his December 6 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital is a “recognition of reality,” while stressing the move did not take a position on the city’s borders. So far, Paraguay is the only other country to announce it will open an embassy in Jerusalem, though a number of Latin American and Central European countries have indicated they may follow suit.AFP contributed to this report.
Rouhani says Tehran won’t surrender to US pressure, threats of war-Trump 'miscalculated' by thinking Islamic Republic would dismantle nuke deal in response to pullout, Iran president charges-By TOI staff-MAY 17,18
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Wednesday that his country wouldn’t surrender to pressure or threats from the United States in the aftermath of the nuclear deal pullout, adding that US President Donald Trump had made an error in expecting Tehran to leave the deal.“They think they can make the Iranian nation surrender by putting pressures on Iran, by sanctions and even threats of war,” Rouhani said of renewed US sanctions recently imposed on Iran’s central bank, according to the ISNA news agency. “The Iranian nation will resist against the US plots.”“Trump played his first card, but miscalculated the second move… as Iran did not follow that plan,” he added. Iran has since been in talks with the other signatories to ensure the deal continues.Washington has long complained that the nuclear deal does nothing to stop Iran’s ballistic missile program or its interference in conflicts across the Middle East from Syria to Yemen. On Sunday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington still wants to work with Europe to counter Iran’s “malign behavior” and was working hard to thrash out a more wide-ranging deal with its European partners. However on Tuesday the US hit Iran’s central bank governor with sanctions.Mohammad Javad Zarif on Tuesday met EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini as well as his counterparts from Britain, France and Germany — the three European signatories to the 2015 landmark accord who are scrambling to preserve it.Tehran has warned it is prepared to resume “industrial-scale” uranium enrichment “without any restrictions” unless Europe can provide solid guarantees that it can maintain the economic benefits it gained from the nuclear agreement despite the United States reimposing sanctions.Zarif’s meetings in Brussels capped a whirlwind global tour, including trips to both Russia and China, the two other signatory nations, in a bid to bolster support. The European Union insists the deal is working, pointing to repeated UN inspections verifying the Islamic republic’s compliance with its side of the bargain.EU leaders aim to show a united front on preserving the Iran deal when they meet for a pre-summit dinner in Sofia on Wednesday, European Council President Donald Tusk said.“I would like our debate to reconfirm without any doubt that as long as Iran respects the provisions of the deal, the EU will also respect it,” Tusk said in a letter to the leaders on the eve of the summit.European firms, especially those from France and Germany, rushed to invest in Iran following the 2015 accord, under which Tehran agreed to freeze its nuclear program in return for an end to punishing international sanctions.German exports to Iran totaled nearly 3.0 billion euros in 2017, while French exports soared from 562 million euros in 2015 to 1.5 billion in 2017 and oil giant Total has pledged to invest some $5 billion in the South Pars gas field. When he quit the deal last week, US President Donald Trump gave businesses a maximum of six months to wind up operations in Iran or face swingeing penalties under American sanctions.AFP contributed to this report.

Lava threatens Hawaii exit routes, could spur more evacuations-[Reuters]-By Terray Sylvester-YAHOONEWS-May 16, 2018
PAHOA, Hawaii (Reuters) - Lava flowing from giant rips in the earth on the flank of Hawaii's erupting Kilauea volcano threatened highways on Monday, raising the possibility officials may order thousands more people to evacuate before escape routes are cut off.Lava from a huge new fissure tore through farmland towards a coastal dirt road that is one of the last exit routes for some 2,000 residents in the southeast area of Hawaii's Big Island.More lava-belching cracks are expected to open among homes and countryside some 25 miles (40 km) east of Kilauea's smoking summit, possibly blocking one of the last exit routes, Highway 132.Fountains of magma spouted "lava bombs" more than 100 feet (30 meters) into the air as the molten rock traveled east-southeast towards the coastal road - Highway 137 - the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.Mass evacuations would be triggered if either highway is hit by lava, said Hawaii National Guard spokesman Jeff Hickman."There's a lot of worst-case scenarios and roads getting blocked is one of them," said Hickman, standing on Highway 137, in the potential path of the lava flow, some two miles (3 km) away.-ERUPTIONS COULD LAST WEEKS-Dozens of homes have been destroyed since eruptions began 10 days ago and officials have ordered the evacuations of nearly 2,000 residents in the lower Puna district of the Big Island, home to around 187,000 people. The American Red Cross said 500 people sought refuge in its shelters on Sunday night because of worsening volcanic activity. Two more fissures opened in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 19."It's optimistic to think that this is the last fissure we're going to see," said Hawaiian Volcano Observatory Deputy Scientist-In-Charge Steve Brantley. A similar seismic event in 1955 lasted 88 days, he said.Unnerved by near-constant small earthquakes and emissions of toxic sulfur dioxide gas, Rob Guzman and his husband Bob Kirk left their home in Kalapana Seaview Estates while they still could."We just need the local government to calm down the panic that some of these 2,000 people are feeling, that today, we're going to be trapped with no way out," said Guzman, who left behind a banana farm and rental properties to go stay with friends. The Hawaii Fire Department issued a "condition red" alert on Monday because fissures in the southeast area of the Lanipuna Gardens area were issuing high levels of sulfur dioxide."Condition RED means immediate danger to health so take action to limit further exposure. Severe conditions may exist such as choking and inability to breathe," the department said in the alert. While residents deal with noxious gas and lava on the ground, the U.S. Geological Survey is concerned that pent-up steam could cause a violent explosive eruption at the volcano crater, launching a 20,000-foot (6,100-meter) plume that could spread debris over 12 miles (19 km).Scientists had expected such explosions by the middle of this month as Kilauea's lava lake fell below the water table. The possibility exists, however, that water may not be entering the crater, as feared, and gas and steam may be safely venting, scientists said."So far those explosions have not occurred and I think the key here is that the vent system is an open one, therefore pressure is not being built or developed down at the top of the lava column," Brantley told a conference call.(Reporting by Terray Sylvester in Pahoa and Jolyn Rosa in Honolulu; Additional reporting by Rich McKay in Atlanta; Writing by Andrew Hay in Taos, New Mexico; Editing by Bill Tarrant, Sandra Maler and Paul Tait)

Chlorine likely used in February attack in Idlib, Syria-weapons agency-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-May 17, 2018
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Banned chlorine munitions were likely dropped on a Syrian neighborhood in February, an international body on chemical weapons said on Wednesday, after laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the toxic chemical. In its latest report on the systematic use of banned munitions in Syria's civil war, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) did not say which party was behind the attack on Saraqib, which lies in rebel-held territory in the province of Idlib. But witnesses told OPCW investigators that the munitions were dropped in barrel bombs from a helicopter, a report released by the OPCW showed. Only Syrian government forces are known to have helicopters. The report by the OPCW's fact finding mission for Syria "determined that chlorine was released from cylinders by mechanical impact in the Al Talil neighborhood of Saraqib."About 11 people were treated after the attack on Feb. 4. for mild and moderate symptoms of toxic chemical exposure, including breathing difficulties, vomiting and unconsciousness, the report said.Samples taken from the soil, canisters and impact sites tested positive for other chemicals, bearing the "markers of the Syrian regime," said Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a biological and chemical weapons expert working in Syria. The samples tested positive for precursors needed to make the nerve agent sarin, he said."These chemicals were detected in previous sarin attacks, Khan Sheikhoun, East Ghouta and no doubt Douma," Bretton-Gordon said. The OPCW is also investigating a suspected chemical attack on April 7 in the Douma enclave near Damascus, which prompted missile strikes by the United States, France and Britain. Those findings are expected by the end of the month. The conclusions on the Saraqib attack are based on the presence of two cylinders, which were determined as previously containing chlorine, witness testimony and environmental samples confirming "the unusual presence of chlorine", it said.A joint OPCW-U.N. mechanism for Syria has previously concluded the Syrian government has used both sarin nerve agent and chlorine, killing and injuring hundreds of civilians. Rebels were found to have used sulfur mustard once on a small scale.Reuters reported in January that tests found "markers" in samples taken at three attack sites between 2013 and 2017 from chemicals from the Syrian government stockpile. The lab tests linked Ghouta and two other nerve agent attack sites, in the towns of Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib governorate on April 4, 2017 and Khan al-Assal, Aleppo, in March 2013, to the stockpile handed over to the agency for destruction in 2014.The government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has denied using chemical weapons and instead has blamed rebels for staging attacks to falsely implicate his forces in the atrocities. The mechanism was disbanded in November following a Russian veto at the U.N. Security Council, a move which ratcheted up tension between Moscow and Western powers over chemical weapons use in Syria.(Reporting by Anthony Deutsch, Editing by Raissa Kasolowsky, William Maclean)
Russian village evacuated after ammunition depot fire-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 17, 2018
MOSCOW — Russia's emergency officials say they are evacuating residents from a village in central Russia after a nearby ammunition depot caught fire. The Emergency Situations Ministry said in a statement Wednesday that they deployed a helicopter and a jet to put out a fire at the ammunition depot in the town of Pugachyovo, around 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) east of Moscow. Authorities have also ordered Pugachyovo's 3,000 residents to evacuate to nearby villages.Authorities said the blaze started after dry grass nearby caught fire.It was the second fire at the same depot in seven years. One person died and about 100 people sought medical help when a fire engulfed the depot in the summer of 2011. More than 4,000 houses were also damaged in the area at the time. The Associated Press.

Power outages linger as U.S. Northeast recovers from deadly storm-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-May 17, 2018
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A violent spring storm that killed at least five people in the northeastern United States downed trees and power lines, leaving hundreds of thousands of people without power on Wednesday.By daybreak, more than 370,000 residents were without power in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, down from more than 600,000 on Tuesday night.Amtrak and most local commuter railroads in the New York metropolitan area said their services were back to normal on Wednesday. Some schools canceled classes or delayed their openings. The line of strong thunderstorms with wind gusts of 50 to 80 miles per hour (80 to 129 kilometers per hour) sped eastward across the region Tuesday evening, causing local flooding, scattering debris and dropping hail as large as tennis balls.Falling trees killed an 11-year-old girl and a woman in separate incidents in Newburgh, New York, police said. Falling trees also killed two people in Connecticut in separate incidents, as well as a person in Pennsylvania, local media reported.Local news showed footage of trees resting on top of crushed cars and houses, and vehicles submerged in water. There were more than 100 reports of hail in states including Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut, the National Weather Service said.New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency in several counties in southeast New York and deployed members of the New York National Guard to assist with the recovery.Officials in Brookfield, Connecticut, declared a town disaster and told residents to stay inside until they could assess the damage."Please be aware that there are hundreds of downed trees, utility poles and electrical lines. AVOID all down trees and utility poles as they may still involve LIVE power lines," the Brookfield Police Department said on Facebook.(Reporting by Peter Szekely in New York and Brendan O'Brien in Milwaukee; Editing by Alison Williams and Susan Thomas)
U.S. Northeast storms kill two, snarl transport, cause power outages-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-May 17, 2018
(Reuters) - Powerful storms carrying high winds, torrential rain and hail slammed heavily populated parts of the U.S. Northeast on Tuesday, knocking over trees that killed two people, snarling transport and causing widespread power outages. An 11-year-old girl was killed on Tuesday afternoon when strong winds caused a tree to fall on a parked car in Newburgh, New York, the Daily Freeman newspaper in Kingston, N.Y. reported.A man who had been mowing his lawn and sought refuge in his truck was killed when a tree fell on the vehicle in Danbury, Connecticut, Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton said, according to the Hartford Courant newspaper. There were nearly 50 reports of hail in states including Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.Much of the ferocity of the storms had dissipated by 10:30 p.m. ET (0230 GMT) but flash flood warnings were still in effect for eastern Maryland, Delaware and southern New Jersey, where rain continued to be heavy, said Frank Pereira, a meteorologist with the NWS.Hail the size of tennis balls smashed car and house windows in Hartford, Pereira said.Nearly 500,000 customers in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Virginia were without power by late Tuesday night, fewer power outages than earlier Tuesday, tracking service PowerOutage.us said.At Grand Central Station in New York, Hudson, Harlem and New Haven Line service was suspended due to the storms, the station's Twitter feed said."I got off the subway at about 5:15, and there were hordes of people," said Jackie Berman, who was attempting to get home to Chappaqua, New York, from Grand Central. GRAND FORKS, B.C. — There is a feeling of "calm apprehension" in the southern British Columbia city of Grand Forks as officials warn of a coming second wave of flood waters, says Brett Swope. The pastor at the Grand Forks Baptist Church said he noticed the flood waters returned on Tuesday when he drove down a local road covered in 15 centimetres of water. It had been dry on Monday, he said in an interview as he travelled around assessing the flood situation. The residents of Grand Forks were unsure what water levels to expect in the coming days, Swope said."Some forecasts are calling for it to be higher, others are calling for it to be just lower than we had recently, but everybody's just sort of bracing for the impact and trying to do everything they can to be prepared," he said.At least 1,500 homes in the Kootenay Boundary regional district, which includes Grand Forks, remained evacuated Tuesday following flooding over the last several days. Provincial officials say evacuation orders covered another 500 homes around the province, while more than 2,600 homes were on evacuation alert.Swope said he's been amazed at the community's tireless labour."When I think of the sense of how our community is feeling, I think that they're, you know, kind of approaching everything with a calm apprehension."He said "hundreds upon hundreds" of volunteers have prepared tens of thousands of sandbags in advance of potential flooding this week and residents are working from sun up to sun down.Jessica Mace of the Kettle River Watershed Authority said temperatures higher than 30 C and exhausting work is wearing on the thousand plus volunteers in Grand Forks."People have been working really long hours," said Mace, "they're so thirsty and tired and worn out."Heavy rains and spring runoff combined to push floodwaters to levels not seen in 70 years in and around Grand Forks last week.Gordy Shaw moved to Grand Forks with his wife eight years ago from Richmond because he said he was worried about dykes bursting in the Metro Vancouver city."I worked all the sawmills along the Fraser River, and I never anticipated this little Kettle River (in Grand Forks) would ever flow like it did today."Shaw said he had about 30 centimetres of water seep into his garage and learned over coffee with his neighbours on Tuesday that he was lucky compared with the damage experienced by others."They just talked to their insurance company, and the insurance company just said 'No, I'm sorry sir, it's overland flooding and you have no insurance,' " said Shaw.Chris Marsh of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary said water levels were rising again along the Granby and Kettle rivers, which meet in Grand Forks."The forecast from the River Forecast Centre is for levels that are possibly equivalent to or higher than the peaks we saw last year, which are record peaks," added Marsh.Emergency Management BC said the Boundary region and Similkameen Valley have already seen significant flooding, while risks are also high across the Okanagan and Shuswap regions.Officials from the regional district said the rapid snowmelt is pushing river levels higher and there was a forecast of rain for the region by Wednesday. An evacuation alert was also issued Tuesday by the township of Langley for part of Glen Valley, as well as Brae and McMillan islands, after the Fraser River was measured at 5.5 metres in Mission, about 70 kilometres east of Vancouver. It was the first evacuation alert of the 2018 flood season for any community near Metro Vancouver.— By Spencer Harwood in Vancouver-The Canadian Press.
Alberta conservatives resume walk out to protest abortion clinic bill-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 17, 2018
EDMONTON — Alberta's abortion clinic bill has moved one step closer to being passed following a debate that saw Opposition United Conservatives walk out of the chamber en masse five more times to avoid casting a vote.At one point, the votes on amendments came quickly, with UCP members leaving their seats, exiting the chamber, returning and sitting down, then popping up minutes later to walk out again.Five amendments put forward by Independent Derek Fildebrandt were defeated by the NDP and the opposition parties, moving the bill to third and final reading. The bill calls for putting a legal buffer zone in place around abortion clinics to prevent staff and patients from being harassed by anti-abortion protesters.UCP Leader Jason Kenney, who is against abortion, has said the bill is a political game by Premier Rachel Notley's NDP to stir up divisive social issues, and has said his caucus will not participate. His caucus members have now walked out of either debate or votes on the bill 12 times since the legislation was introduced by Health Minister Sarah Hoffman, who says the UCP members are failing to do their jobs. The Canadian Press.

Tears and joy as Egyptian Christians killed in Libya laid to rest-[Reuters]-By Mostafa Salem-YAHOONEWS-May 16, 2018
AL-OUR, EGYPT (Reuters) - Tears mixed with joy on Tuesday as the remains of 20 Christians were laid to rest in Egypt's Minya province more than three years after they were kidnapped and beheaded in Libya in an attack that provoked rare Egyptian air strikes. The return of the bodies of 20 Egyptian Copts has brought families in rural Egypt a chance for some closure after years in mourning with little hope of having the bodies of their loved ones being recovered for burial."Everyone stood beside the martyr that belongs to him and cried a little, but they were tears of longing, nothing more," said Bishri Ibrahim, father of Kerolos, one of the victims, at the funeral service at a church in the village of al-Our in Minya province, where they were all laid to rest."But we are happy and joyful that they have returned to the village. This is a blessing for the country and to all Copts all over the world," he added.Thirteen of the 21 Libya victims came from al-Our, a rural town of around 10,000 people south of Cairo.President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi ordered the Church, named The Church of the Martyrs of Faith and Homeland, to be built soon after the incident and dedicated in their memory.Sisi also ordered a wave of air strikes on the Islamic State's militant bases in Libya. The remains of the victims, who were flown from Libya about a private jet to Cairo on Monday night, were placed inside cylinder-shaped containers covered in velvet cloth with the names of each victim and interred under the church altar.Families said the burial place would be opened as a shrine for visitors. The victims had been among the many poor Egyptians who risked their lives to find work in the lawless chaos of Libya following the downfall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 and civil war.A video posted by Islamic State in January 2015 showed 21 people -- 20 Egyptian Copts and one Ghanaian Christian -- lined up on a Libyan beach in orange jumpsuits before they were executed."I wanted to see Milad come back from Libya on his feet after his struggle and hard work to earn a living in a harsh life abroad," 55-year-old Zaki Hanna, the father of one of the victims."But thanks be to God, he died a hero, did not beg anyone to spare his life and he and his brothers, the martyrs, did not abandon their faith or homeland."Bashir Estephanos, whose two younger brothers were killed by Islamic State in Libya, said all Christians in al-Our village had been praying for the past three years for the bodies of the "martyrs" to be found.Libyan authorities recovered the bodies in October after the area where they were buried was recaptured from the militant Islamist group."Our prayers were answered, so thanks be to God from the bottom of our hearts," he said, speaking before the bodies arrived in the village. The head of the Coptic Church in Egypt, Pope Tawadros II, was at the airport to receive the remains when they arrived in Cairo on Monday night.(Reporting by Mostafa Salem; writing by Sami Aboudi; editing by Richard Balmforth)
Putin says Russia's defense industry to get new Yars missile complexes in 2018-[Reuters]-YAHOONEWS-May 17, 2018
SOCHI, Russia (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that 14 missile regiments would receive the new Yars intercontinental missile complexes to replace their old Topol complexes this year as part of a build-up of the state's armed forces.Putin, whose relations with the West have deteriorated, said previously he does not want an arms race, while warning potential enemies that his country has developed a new generation of invincible weapons to protect itself. At a meeting with defense ministry officials in the Black Sea city of Sochi on Tuesday, Putin added that the national defense industry would also receive modernized missile-carrying bombers in 2018."In the course of the year, the air part of a nuclear triad will receive modernized missile-carrying bombers TU-95MS and TU-160 armed with modern cruise long-range missiles Kh-101 and Kh-102," he said.He also told officials that the defense sector should finish the development and prepare for manufacturing the S-500 surface-to-air anti-ballistic missile system capable of intercepting targets at the highest altitudes including near space.(Reporting by Denis Pinchuk; writing by Denis Pinchuk and Polina Devitt; editing by Hugh Lawson)
Israel says Hamas curbed Gaza protests after Egyptian warning-[Reuters]-By Nidal al-Mughrabi and Dan Williams-YAHOONEWS-May 16, 2018
GAZA/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Palestinian protests on the Gaza-Israel border have dropped off over the past two days, with Israel on Wednesday pointing to what it said were Egyptian efforts to restore calm after dozens of Palestinians were killed by Israeli gunfire.Gaza's dominant Islamist Hamas movement denied that it was under pressure from neighbouring Egypt to scale back the six-week-old demonstrations, and said they would continue, although fewer Palestinians were now gathering in protest tents.Gaza medics said two Palestinians were shot dead during Tuesday's demonstrations along the 51 km (32 mile) border. On Monday, 60 were killed in a far greater turnout on the day the United States relocated its Israel embassy to Jerusalem.Pushing back against foreign censure of its army's actions, Israel has - with Washington's backing - accused Hamas of using civilians as cover for attacks across the frontier fence and to distract from Gaza's internal problems. Hamas denies this.Angered by the U.S. embassy move and the Gaza bloodshed, Turkey expelled Israel's ambassador and consul to Istanbul, Ankara said on Wednesday. Israel responded to its envoy's expulsion on Tuesday by expelling Turkey's Jerusalem consul. The Palestinian Foreign Ministry announced the recall for consultations of its envoys in Romania, Hungary, Austria and the Czech Republic, citing those EU members' participation in an official Israeli reception on Sunday for a U.S. delegation that inaugurated the American Embassy in Jerusalem. There has been little Israeli domestic dissent at the lethal tactics around Gaza, where in the last decade Israel has fought three wars against Hamas, a group sworn to its destruction.Dubbed the March of Return, the protests were launched on March 30 to demand Palestinian access to family lands or homes lost to Israel during its founding in a 1948 war. Larger crowds have flocked to the border after Muslim prayers on Fridays.Israel and Egypt, citing security concerns, maintain a de facto blockade on Gaza which has reduced its economy to a state of collapse during more than a decade of Hamas rule and repeated war with Israel. Two million people live in the narrow strip, most stateless descendants of refugees who fled or were driven out of homes in Israel at the time of its founding. They suffer from what the World Bank says is one of the highest rates of unemployment on earth, and say the blockade makes rebuilding impossible.Gaza analyst Akram Attallah, pointing to the smaller number of protesters since Monday's deaths, said: "I can see there is a retreat because of the Israeli bloody response ... but Friday will represent an indicator to where things are going."Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh made a brief visit on Sunday to Egypt, which has sought to act as a broker between the Islamists and other Palestinian factions, as well as Israel.Israeli Intelligence Minister Israel Katz said an Egyptian intelligence chief, whom he did not name, warned Haniyeh that Cairo "knows and has proof" that Hamas was funding the protests and sending people to the border fence to serve "as living ammunition, women and children instead of shells and rockets".-HOLDING FAST-The Egyptian official "made unequivocally clear to him (Haniyeh) that if this continues, Israel will respond and take far harsher steps, and Egypt will stand by and will not help," Katz told Israel Radio in an interview."Haniyeh returned to Gaza, Hamas gave an order ... and miraculously, this spontaneous protest by a public that could not handle the situation any more dissipated."There was no immediate response from Egypt to Katz's statements, which Hamas dismissed as false."There is no mediation. The marches will continue until our people achieve their goals," Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said.At a news conference at a protest encampment on Wednesday, Palestinian factions, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad, urged people to take part in mass rallies on Friday. But the start on Thursday of the holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims abstain from eating and drinking during daylight hours, could limit the scale of the demonstrations. In a statement issued at the news conference, the factions said the fasting would be taken into account. They said marches would continue through early June.Organisers say the Gaza protests are civilian actions, noting the absence of Israeli casualties, compared to 107 Palestinian dead and thousands of wounded. Israel disputes this. The army said 14 of those killed on Monday were shot while firing on Israeli troops or trying to blow up the fence. In Jerusalem, following the U.S. lead, Guatemala opened its embassy in the city on Wednesday. Paraguay is slated to do the same next week. Most countries keep their embassies in Tel Aviv, however, saying the status of the holy city should be decided in peace talks between Israel and Palestinians, which want to have their own capital there. Those talks have been stalled since 2014.Israel regards all of Jerusalem, including the eastern sector captured in the 1967 Middle East, as its capital. Palestinians seek East Jerusalem as the capital of a state they want to establish in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.(Additional reporting by Nidal al-Mughrabi in Gaza; Writing by Dan Williams and Jeffrey Heller, William Maclean; Editing by Peter Graff)

GENESIS 7:6-12
6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth,
9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

"It's a mess."More than 500 flights were canceled at the three major airports serving the New York on Tuesday, and more than 100 at Boston's Logan International, according to tracking service FlightAware.com.Rain is expected to continue for the next couple of days over much of the areas that experienced strong winds and rain on Tuesday, but the threat of severe weather has diminished, Pereira said.(This version of the story has been refiled to correct day of the week in paragraph 7)(Reporting by Jon Herskovitz in Austin, Texas; Additional reporting by David Gaffen in New York; Editing by Sandra Maler and Paul Tait)
Waters rising in flood-ravaged southern B.C. as residents brace for 'round two'-[The Canadian Press]-YAHOONEWS-May 17, 2018
GRAND FORKS, B.C.
