HONOLULU — Hawaii has approved its first laboratory to begin testing samples of medical marijuana 17 years after use of the drug was legalized in the state.On Monday, the state Department of Health certified Honolulu-based lab Steep Hill Hawaii. That brings Hawaii closer to the long-awaited date when dispensaries can sell their products.Hawaii was among the first states to legalize medical marijuana in 2000. But the state didn't legalize dispensaries until 2015, leaving about 17,000 patients to grow or obtain the drug on their own.Then medical marijuana dispensaries began opening in Hawaii this summer, but they could not sell their products because the state had not certified any labs to conduct the required testing. So they conducted outreach instead."This is a big milestone, and it couldn't have come any sooner, because many people within the industry were getting frustrated and a little angry at the time it has taken to get to this point," said state Sen. Will Espero, a Democrat. "But now that we are here, hopefully the next phase in terms of sales will happen quickly and everything will go smoothly."Once the lab receives samples, it will take about four days to test and return products to dispensaries for sale, said Dana Ciccone, owner of Steep Hill Hawaii.Then the dispensary will undergo one final inspection by the Department of Health with the product present, department spokeswoman Janice Okubo said. That on-site inspection and accompanying paperwork could take 24 to 48 hours, she said.Steep Hill worked tirelessly over the past year to receive certification so patients could finally access safe, legal cannabis, Ciccone said in an email. Treasure-hunting Canadian researchers say they have figured out how to find sapphire deposits by identifying the exact sequence of geologic events that create the sparkling gemstone.To date, Canada's only significant deposit of sapphires is one that was discovered near Kimmirut, on southern Baffin Island, Nunavut, in 2002.The quality of the Beluga sapphires produced from that deposit can be so high that they don't have to be heated to intensify their colour and clarity, unlike nearly 99 per cent of sapphires.They're good enough that 48 of them, totalling 10.19 carats, were used to adorn a ceremonial brooch presented to Queen Elizabeth earlier this month by Governor General David Johnston to mark her sapphire (65th) jubilee on the throne.The Geological Association of Canada says the geological setting of the region is similar to that of the gem-producing areas of Kashmir and Myanmar, where some of the world's most valuable stones originated.But would-be gemologists who want to explore for more are stuck between a rock and a hard place: sapphires are buried deep in inhospitable Arctic terrain. It's an expensive and onerous proposition to mine them.That's why mineralogists at the University of British Columbia studied this gold mine of sapphires."The quality and the abundance of sapphire in the Kimmirut area is just off the hook — it doesn't come close to anything else in Canada," says Philippe Belley, a grad student in the Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at UBC.Belley, along with associate professor Lee Groat and colleagues, sought to explain how those deposits were formed."We found that three pressure and temperature events were all necessary to create sapphires in this type of rock composition," Belley told CBC News."These events are related to regional metamorphism — when you have big tectonic events that cause changes in rock on a very large scale," he said.The first created a particular group of minerals; the second partially broke down those minerals into a different group of minerals; and the third was a reaction between the two groups of minerals to form corundum — sapphire.The researchers compared this information to regional data from the Geological Survey of Canada to pinpoint what they say are the most promising areas for sapphire exploration in Nunavut.Their findings are published in the July issue of Canadian Mineralogist.Belley says it's a model that could be used elsewhere in the world."Look at the metamorphic history of the area, and if it's suitable for that type of deposit, it's worth looking for the indicator minerals."One of those indicator minerals was scapolite, which in Kimmirut glows a luminous yellow or yellowish-orange.Belley said he took samples from a location in New York state where scapolite with the same fluorescence feature is present, and he found pink sapphires — though they were not gem quality.-'The gem bug'-One expert says finding sapphires in Canada is like finding a sparkly needle in a tundra haystack, so the information the researchers unearthed is valuable."The research they're doing is helping us understand the geological environment in which these sapphires occur," says Brad Wilson, a geologist and gemologist who was on the original Kimmirut exploration team. "It helps people like me who are exploring for these gems narrow in on where we can look and expect to find them."Gem-quality sapphires range in price from $200 to $2,000 US per carat.Wilson says there is simply no way to estimate what sapphire exploration in Canada could be worth."We have many place where corundum has been found but only one in one place where it has been found to be gem quality — that's this one, and even this one location has not been fully explored," says Wilson, who is also a gem cutter and dealer. "We don't know what's there, we don't know its full potential. Are there other occurrences waiting to be found? Quite possibly. It would be wrong to speculate on what these might look like, or to suggest that free movement will continue as it is now,” the spokesman added.In the past few days, May's ministers gave conflicting views about what Brexit would look like, with finance minister Philip Hammond suggesting last week that there would be no immediate change to the immigration rules in the UK after Brexit.Hammond has suggested that a two or three year-long transition period would follow Brexit, with most of the EU rights and obligations continuing in the UK, mirroring the non-EU arrangements carved out by, for instance, Norway or Switzerland.Norway, along with Iceland and Lichtenstein, is part of the European Economic Area (EEA), which extends the EU’s internal market. It provides for the free movement of people, goods, services and capital, without having to be a member of the EU.Switzerland, which not a member of the EEA, is, however, part of the EU's free trade area (EFTA).Downing Street now seems to contradict Hammond, who has been pushing for a softer Brexit, against May’s hard Brexit scenario."There were reports last week that we were looking for an off-the-shelf model, we are not looking for an off-the-shelf model. BRUSSELS, Today, 09:26-The Polish government has continued to mock the European Commission after it launched legal action over Warsaw’s judicial reforms.The new wave of recriminations came after the Commission notified Poland in a formal letter on Saturday (29 July) that it had filed “infringement proceedings” over a law on judges’ retirement age.The Commission said “vague criteria” on how the Polish justice minister, Zbigniew Ziobro, was to decide on prolongation of judges’ mandates allowed him to “retain influence over the judges concerned”.It also accused Poland of sexual discrimination by letting women judges retire aged 60 and male judges aged 65.It gave Warsaw one month to answer its concerns or face EU court action leading to potential fines.Commission vice president Frans Timmermans in a public statement urged Ziobro to come to Brussels at his “earliest convenience” for the sake of “constructive dialogue”.But Ziobro’s initial reaction indicated that might not go well.“This is clearly a political battle with Poland. There are influential groups and politicians behind this, in whose interests it would be for Poland to be a weak country that was open to outside interference,” he told Nasz Dziennik, a right-wing Polish newspaper, in one interview.He told wSieci, another conservative Polish newspaper, that Poland would follow Hungary’s lead in building a more authoritarian state.“In politics, you need character. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Four Arab states that have cut diplomatic and transport ties with Qatar said Monday that they have opened up air routes that Qatari planes can use in case of emergency.The United Arab Emirates' foreign ministry said that nine corridors were being opened in co-ordination with the International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO. The official Saudi Press Agency issued a similar statement.Qatar denied that any new routes had been made available, however.In a statement citing its Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority, it said no navigation announcements have been released outlining the new corridors.The ministry and QCAA alleged that the anti-Qatar bloc was trying to "leak incorrect news" ahead of a meeting of the ICAO council on Monday.The ICAO did not immediately respond to a request for comment.The Emirati foreign ministry said the emergency routes include overseas areas managed by the UAE and one over the Mediterranean, managed by Egypt.The UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain cut links with Qatar in early June over allegations it supports extremists. KABUL — It was a routine check. Two vans, both without license plates, were stopped earlier this month by police in Afghanistan's eastern Ghazni province, where Taliban hold sway in large swaths of the countryside.Inside, police found 27 boys between the ages of 4 and 15, all being taken illegally to Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province to study in seminaries called madrassas, according to a police report acquired by The Associated Press.The authorities told the AP that the children were being taken to Pakistani madrassas to educate a new generation in the ways of the Taliban, with the intention of returning them to Afghanistan to enforce the same rigid interpretation of Islam practiced by the radical religious movement until its ouster by U.S.-led coalition forces in 2001.The police called it child trafficking and threw the drivers and the only other adults, two men who organized the convoy, into jail.But the parents said they wanted their children to study in Pakistan and had willingly sent them to Quetta, the capital of Pakistan's sparsely populated Baluchistan province on the border with Afghanistan.Quetta is significant to Afghanistan's Taliban, many of whom graduated from madrassas there. It is also considered the headquarters of the Taliban leadership council, which is widely referred to as the "Quetta shura."An Afghan counterterrorism official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because revealing his identity could endanger him, said Afghan intelligence has identified 26 madrassas in Pakistan where it suspects future generations of Taliban are being trained and in some cases instructed in carrying out suicide bombings.Several of the 26 madrassas he identified were in Quetta.Sheikh Abdul Hakim madrassa was among the Quetta schools the Afghan official identified as a Taliban recruitment centre . Sometimes they are told they will be educated or will get a good job and be looked after," said Mahmoodi. "But when they get there they are beaten, forced to work as cheap labour , taken by Taliban as new recruits."Mohammed Naseer spent several weeks arranging for his son, a nephew and several other children from his district of Ander in Ghazni province to go to Quetta to study the Qur’an . His son Mohammed Yaseen is just 9 years old but he said he was excited to be going to Quetta. His dream: "I want to be a mullah (cleric)."Naseer, who wore a black turban and a long black unkempt beard, said his son had studied three years in a village school but he still could neither read nor write, not even at a rudimentary level, in his native Pashto language. He said the village school even offers English lessons but the teacher doesn't speak English.But even more worrying for Naseer is the lack of a quality Islamic seminary to school his son in Islam's holy book. Several children from nearby villages were home on vacation from a madrassa in Pakistan and Naseer said he heard them recite the Qur’an and "their words were so sweet." He decided then to send his son to Pakistan. Naseer said he wanted a madrassa with a dormitory that would house and feed his child. They don't exist in his area, he said.He loaded his son along with 26 other children into the two vans, gave his son a change of clothes and gave some money to the men taking his child to Pakistan "but only for transportation."But senior police official Fazlur Rahman Bustani in Kabul said the movement of children is a business and a dangerous one, regardless of whether parents willingly send their children."Those involved in the transport of children are part of a dangerous network and it is a criminal act," said Bustani. She announced Friday that she would be resigning as leader of the Liberal party."I took a long walk along the lakeshore on Friday morning and I knew it was time to leave," she said of the decision that had been percolating since the May 9 election, when the Liberal party finished one seat shy of a majority."I didn't want to leave in the midst of chaos so I stuck around," Clark said, adding thoughts about resigning grew last month when Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon asked NDP Leader John Horgan to govern.Clark said she had the full support of "every single person" in her caucus the day before she made her announcement, but felt her departure would give the Liberal party a chance to renew itself and prepare for the Opposition benches after 16 years in power.She said the timing of her exit is good for both her and the party because she doesn't believe there will be an election in the fall.She will also be giving up her seat in the legislature, triggering a byelection in Kelowna West within six months."I am done with public life," Clark said. "There is nothing worse than a politician hanging on because they think they're irreplaceable."Clark said she's proud of her party's accomplishments, including five consecutive balanced budgets and the creation of the Great Bear Rainforest.However, she was widely criticized last month for abandoning long-time Liberal ideals with a throne speech that adapted promises from the NDP and Greens, including a commitment to a poverty-reduction plan and adding $1 billion over four years for child care and early childhood development.Her party was ultimately defeated in a non-confidence vote following an NDP-Green deal. We wish him all the best.”Kelly was officially sworn in as Trump’s chief of staff Monday morning, following the sudden departure of former chief of staff Reince Priebus on Friday.At her daily press briefing Monday afternoon, Sanders confirmed that Scaramucci is no longer serving the administration in any capacity, despite earlier reports that he may assume an alternate post.“He does not have a role at this time in the Trump administration,” she said.Sanders told reporters that Kelly “will bring new structure to the White House, and discipline, and strength” and that the retired general “has the full authority to carry out business as he sees fit.”The spokeswoman said “all staff will report to him.” It remained to be seen whether that blanket statement would apply to Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner, or senior strategist Steve Bannon.A White House source told Yahoo News that Scaramucci was in the West Wing on Monday morning. JACKSON, Miss. — The Confederate battle emblem on the Mississippi flag is prompting public protests and private discussions about race relations at a Southern legislative meeting.Lawmakers and staff members from 15 states are in Biloxi, Mississippi, for the Southern Legislative Conference annual meeting, which started Saturday and goes through Wednesday.Participants are discussing energy, public safety and other issues that cut across state lines. But most members of the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus are boycotting the meeting because of the flag, and more than a dozen other people with a group called the Mississippi Rising Coalition protested the banner Saturday outside the meeting's opening reception in Gulfport.Mississippi has the last state flag with the Confederate emblem — a red field topped by a blue tilted cross topped by 13 white stars. Critics see the symbol as a racist reminder of slavery and segregation, but supporters say it represents history and heritage.About 50 black and white lawmakers from Mississippi, Georgia and other states had a meeting Monday to discuss how Confederate symbols affect race relations and the economy. HONOLULU — Hawaii has approved its first laboratory to begin testing samples of medical marijuana 17 years after use of the drug was legalized in the state.On Monday, the state Department of Health certified Honolulu-based lab Steep Hill Hawaii. That brings Hawaii closer to the long-awaited date when dispensaries can sell their products.Hawaii was among the first states to legalize medical marijuana in 2000. But the state didn't legalize dispensaries until 2015, leaving about 17,000 patients to grow or obtain the drug on their own.Then medical marijuana dispensaries began opening in Hawaii this summer, but they could not sell their products because the state had not certified any labs to conduct the required testing. So they conducted outreach instead."This is a big milestone, and it couldn't have come any sooner, because many people within the industry were getting frustrated and a little angry at the time it has taken to get to this point," said state Sen. Will Espero, a Democrat. "But now that we are here, hopefully the next phase in terms of sales will happen quickly and everything will go smoothly."Once the lab receives samples, it will take about four days to test and return products to dispensaries for sale, said Dana Ciccone, owner of Steep Hill Hawaii.Then the dispensary will undergo one final inspection by the Department of Health with the product present, department spokeswoman Janice Okubo said. That on-site inspection and accompanying paperwork could take 24 to 48 hours, she said.Steep Hill worked tirelessly over the past year to receive certification so patients could finally access safe, legal cannabis, Ciccone said in an email. Treasure-hunting Canadian researchers say they have figured out how to find sapphire deposits by identifying the exact sequence of geologic events that create the sparkling gemstone.To date, Canada's only significant deposit of sapphires is one that was discovered near Kimmirut, on southern Baffin Island, Nunavut, in 2002.The quality of the Beluga sapphires produced from that deposit can be so high that they don't have to be heated to intensify their colour and clarity, unlike nearly 99 per cent of sapphires.They're good enough that 48 of them, totalling 10.19 carats, were used to adorn a ceremonial brooch presented to Queen Elizabeth earlier this month by Governor General David Johnston to mark her sapphire (65th) jubilee on the throne.The Geological Association of Canada says the geological setting of the region is similar to that of the gem-producing areas of Kashmir and Myanmar, where some of the world's most valuable stones originated.But would-be gemologists who want to explore for more are stuck between a rock and a hard place: sapphires are buried deep in inhospitable Arctic terrain. It's an expensive and onerous proposition to mine them.That's why mineralogists at the University of British Columbia studied this gold mine of sapphires."The quality and the abundance of sapphire in the Kimmirut area is just off the hook — it doesn't come close to anything else in Canada," says Philippe Belley, a grad student in the Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at UBC.Belley, along with associate professor Lee Groat and colleagues, sought to explain how those deposits were formed."We found that three pressure and temperature events were all necessary to create sapphires in this type of rock composition," Belley told CBC News."These events are related to regional metamorphism — when you have big tectonic events that cause changes in rock on a very large scale," he said.The first created a particular group of minerals; the second partially broke down those minerals into a different group of minerals; and the third was a reaction between the two groups of minerals to form corundum — sapphire.The researchers compared this information to regional data from the Geological Survey of Canada to pinpoint what they say are the most promising areas for sapphire exploration in Nunavut.Their findings are published in the July issue of Canadian Mineralogist.Belley says it's a model that could be used elsewhere in the world."Look at the metamorphic history of the area, and if it's suitable for that type of deposit, it's worth looking for the indicator minerals."One of those indicator minerals was scapolite, which in Kimmirut glows a luminous yellow or yellowish-orange.Belley said he took samples from a location in New York state where scapolite with the same fluorescence feature is present, and he found pink sapphires — though they were not gem quality.-'The gem bug'-One expert says finding sapphires in Canada is like finding a sparkly needle in a tundra haystack, so the information the researchers unearthed is valuable."The research they're doing is helping us understand the geological environment in which these sapphires occur," says Brad Wilson, a geologist and gemologist who was on the original Kimmirut exploration team. "It helps people like me who are exploring for these gems narrow in on where we can look and expect to find them."Gem-quality sapphires range in price from $200 to $2,000 US per carat.Wilson says there is simply no way to estimate what sapphire exploration in Canada could be worth."We have many place where corundum has been found but only one in one place where it has been found to be gem quality — that's this one, and even this one location has not been fully explored," says Wilson, who is also a gem cutter and dealer. "We don't know what's there, we don't know its full potential. Are there other occurrences waiting to be found? Quite possibly. It would be wrong to speculate on what these might look like, or to suggest that free movement will continue as it is now,” the spokesman added.In the past few days, May's ministers gave conflicting views about what Brexit would look like, with finance minister Philip Hammond suggesting last week that there would be no immediate change to the immigration rules in the UK after Brexit.Hammond has suggested that a two or three year-long transition period would follow Brexit, with most of the EU rights and obligations continuing in the UK, mirroring the non-EU arrangements carved out by, for instance, Norway or Switzerland.Norway, along with Iceland and Lichtenstein, is part of the European Economic Area (EEA), which extends the EU’s internal market. There are influential groups and politicians behind this, in whose interests it would be for Poland to be a weak country that was open to outside interference,” he told Nasz Dziennik, a right-wing Polish newspaper, in one interview.He told wSieci, another conservative Polish newspaper, that Poland would follow Hungary’s lead in building a more authoritarian state.“In politics, you need character. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Four Arab states that have cut diplomatic and transport ties with Qatar said Monday that they have opened up air routes that Qatari planes can use in case of emergency.The United Arab Emirates' foreign ministry said that nine corridors were being opened in co-ordination with the International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO. The official Saudi Press Agency issued a similar statement.Qatar denied that any new routes had been made available, however.In a statement citing its Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority, it said no navigation announcements have been released outlining the new corridors.The ministry and QCAA alleged that the anti-Qatar bloc was trying to "leak incorrect news" ahead of a meeting of the ICAO council on Monday.The ICAO did not immediately respond to a request for comment.The Emirati foreign ministry said the emergency routes include overseas areas managed by the UAE and one over the Mediterranean, managed by Egypt.The UAE, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain cut links with Qatar in early June over allegations it supports extremists. Qatar denies the charge.The move forced state-backed Qatar Airways, one of the region's biggest airlines, to reroute many of its flights and scrap frequent routes to major regional destinations such as Dubai.The Associated Press.

KABUL — It was a routine check. Two vans, both without license plates, were stopped earlier this month by police in Afghanistan's eastern Ghazni province, where Taliban hold sway in large swaths of the countryside.Inside, police found 27 boys between the ages of 4 and 15, all being taken illegally to Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province to study in seminaries called madrassas, according to a police report acquired by The Associated Press.The authorities told the AP that the children were being taken to Pakistani madrassas to educate a new generation in the ways of the Taliban, with the intention of returning them to Afghanistan to enforce the same rigid interpretation of Islam practiced by the radical religious movement until its ouster by U.S.-led coalition forces in 2001.The police called it child trafficking and threw the drivers and the only other adults, two men who organized the convoy, into jail.But the parents said they wanted their children to study in Pakistan and had willingly sent them to Quetta, the capital of Pakistan's sparsely populated Baluchistan province on the border with Afghanistan.Quetta is significant to Afghanistan's Taliban, many of whom graduated from madrassas there. It is also considered the headquarters of the Taliban leadership council, which is widely referred to as the "Quetta shura."An Afghan counterterrorism official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because revealing his identity could endanger him, said Afghan intelligence has identified 26 madrassas in Pakistan where it suspects future generations of Taliban are being trained and in some cases instructed in carrying out suicide bombings.Several of the 26 madrassas he identified were in Quetta.Sheikh Abdul Hakim madrassa was among the Quetta schools the Afghan official identified as a Taliban recruitment centre . The AP went to the madrassa and was told the director, after whom the madrassa is named, was on a missionary sabbatical to preach Islam, but a teacher, Azizullah Mainkhail, said some students at the madrassa were from Afghanistan.The majority, however, he said are Pakistanis from villages throughout Baluchistan. He denied affiliation with the Taliban or Pakistan's powerful intelligence agency known by the acronym ISI and accused by Afghanistan of supporting the Taliban.The madrassa is massive, surrounded by high walls that shelter several buildings of mud and cement. Mainkhail said 350 students live and study there.A separate attempt in Ghazni province to move children across the border, also for religious education, was foiled by police about two weeks ago, the Afghan official said. The 13 children, from neighbouring Paktika province, were also destined for religious studies, this time in seminaries in Pakistan's sprawling Arabian Sea port city of Karachi.Traffickers "wanted to take our innocent children to the terrorist centres on the other side of the border under the pretense of Islamic studies," Ghazni Police Chief Mohammad Mustafa Mayar said.War, poverty, insecurity and a lack of understanding by families of the dangers awaiting their children all combine to drive the child trafficking trade in Afghanistan, said Mohammed Musa Mahmoodi of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission.Each year there are at least three or four cases of children being smuggled from province to province or across the international borders, sometimes to be used as cheap labour , other times to be recruited by the Taliban under the guise of religious education and other times for sexual abuse, says Mahmoodi.Still, he said the problem is much greater than the few busloads of children intercepted would indicate, but corruption and a lack of training in the ways of child traffickers makes it a lucrative and fairly safe trade in Afghanistan.Several years ago a child trafficking ring that had taken children to Saudi Arabia to be used as cheap labour was busted, he recalled."Parents often agree to send their children but they don't know what is awaiting the child. Sometimes they are told they will be educated or will get a good job and be looked after," said Mahmoodi. "But when they get there they are beaten, forced to work as cheap labour , taken by Taliban as new recruits."Mohammed Naseer spent several weeks arranging for his son, a nephew and several other children from his district of Ander in Ghazni province to go to Quetta to study the Qur’an . His son Mohammed Yaseen is just 9 years old but he said he was excited to be going to Quetta. His dream: "I want to be a mullah (cleric)."Naseer, who wore a black turban and a long black unkempt beard, said his son had studied three years in a village school but he still could neither read nor write, not even at a rudimentary level, in his native Pashto language. He said the village school even offers English lessons but the teacher doesn't speak English.But even more worrying for Naseer is the lack of a quality Islamic seminary to school his son in Islam's holy book. Several children from nearby villages were home on vacation from a madrassa in Pakistan and Naseer said he heard them recite the Qur’an and "their words were so sweet." He decided then to send his son to Pakistan. Naseer said he wanted a madrassa with a dormitory that would house and feed his child. They don't exist in his area, he said.He loaded his son along with 26 other children into the two vans, gave his son a change of clothes and gave some money to the men taking his child to Pakistan "but only for transportation."But senior police official Fazlur Rahman Bustani in Kabul said the movement of children is a business and a dangerous one, regardless of whether parents willingly send their children."Those involved in the transport of children are part of a dangerous network and it is a criminal act," said Bustani. VANCOUVER — Former British Columbia premier Christy Clark says a disappointing finish on election night had her feeling like she should leave politics, but her head didn't catch up with her heart until shortly before she told her caucus of her decision.Clark, 51, looked relaxed and relieved as she gave her last news conference Monday with her teenage son Hamish at her side, calling her 6-1/2 years as premier "an incredible journey." She announced Friday that she would be resigning as leader of the Liberal party."I took a long walk along the lakeshore on Friday morning and I knew it was time to leave," she said of the decision that had been percolating since the May 9 election, when the Liberal party finished one seat shy of a majority."I didn't want to leave in the midst of chaos so I stuck around," Clark said, adding thoughts about resigning grew last month when Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon asked NDP Leader John Horgan to govern.Clark said she had the full support of "every single person" in her caucus the day before she made her announcement, but felt her departure would give the Liberal party a chance to renew itself and prepare for the Opposition benches after 16 years in power.She said the timing of her exit is good for both her and the party because she doesn't believe there will be an election in the fall.She will also be giving up her seat in the legislature, triggering a byelection in Kelowna West within six months."I am done with public life," Clark said. "There is nothing worse than a politician hanging on because they think they're irreplaceable."Clark said she's proud of her party's accomplishments, including five consecutive balanced budgets and the creation of the Great Bear Rainforest.However, she was widely criticized last month for abandoning long-time Liberal ideals with a throne speech that adapted promises from the NDP and Greens, including a commitment to a poverty-reduction plan and adding $1 billion over four years for child care and early childhood development.Her party was ultimately defeated in a non-confidence vote following an NDP-Green deal. That alliance will have a two-seat majority when Clark vacates her seat.Clark said she has no immediate career plans but will do some gardening and "get Hamish to do his homework because Grade 11's a busy year."Mom and son said they're looking forward to going to the theatre and Clark said she'll likely be a "stage mom" to Hamish, who she said is a talented actor.Clark was elected to the B.C. legislature in 1996 but left politics in 2004 to spend time with her son. She made a failed bid for mayor of Vancouver the following year before launching a successful leadership bid for the Liberals in 2011.Hamish Telford, a political science professor at the University of the Fraser Valley, said Clark could still make a political comeback if the Liberal party drafts her back into the fold, especially if the potentially fragile New Democrats fall in the coming months.He said that in 1979, former prime minister Pierre Trudeau left politics when the Progressive Conservatives had a minority government under Joe Clark."Then the Clark government fell before the Liberals had a new leader. In the latest shake-up inside President Trump’s volatile White House, communications director Anthony Scaramucci has been removed from his post just 11 days after landing in the West Wing.“Anthony Scaramucci will be leaving his role as White House communications director,” said White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders in a statement Monday. “Mr. Scaramucci felt it was best to give chief of staff John Kelly a clean slate and the ability to build his own team. We wish him all the best.”Kelly was officially sworn in as Trump’s chief of staff Monday morning, following the sudden departure of former chief of staff Reince Priebus on Friday.At her daily press briefing Monday afternoon, Sanders confirmed that Scaramucci is no longer serving the administration in any capacity, despite earlier reports that he may assume an alternate post.“He does not have a role at this time in the Trump administration,” she said.Sanders told reporters that Kelly “will bring new structure to the White House, and discipline, and strength” and that the retired general “has the full authority to carry out business as he sees fit.”The spokeswoman said “all staff will report to him.” It remained to be seen whether that blanket statement would apply to Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner, or senior strategist Steve Bannon.A White House source told Yahoo News that Scaramucci was in the West Wing on Monday morning. The source also said the move was a shock to staffers and “came out of the blue.”The flamboyant financier’s shocking exit came with twists that would not be out of place in a Hollywood version of the White House. Scaramucci’s arrival led to the dismissal of Priebus and press secretary Sean Spicer, his ouster has been credited to the man who replaced Priebus. The White House statement announcing Scaramucci’s departure was crafted in the office that Spicer, for now, still occupies. Spicer, approached by reporters to confirm early news reports of Scaramucci’s departure, was all smiles and would not say whether he would now be staying on.While Trump has suffered more turnover among this top aides than any modern president, Scaramucci’s removal seemed to be more a sign of order than chaos. It suggested an attempt by Kelly — a retired four-star Marine general — to impose discipline, and, notably, to enforce a traditional pecking order. Whereas past communications directors have answered to the chief of staff, Scaramucci’s arrangement had him reporting directly to Trump.In just over six months in office, Trump has shed his first national security adviser (Michael Flynn), communications director (Mike Dubke), press secretary (Sean Spicer), deputy chief of staff (Katie Walsh), deputy national security adviser (K.T. JACKSON, Miss. — The Confederate battle emblem on the Mississippi flag is prompting public protests and private discussions about race relations at a Southern legislative meeting.Lawmakers and staff members from 15 states are in Biloxi, Mississippi, for the Southern Legislative Conference annual meeting, which started Saturday and goes through Wednesday.Participants are discussing energy, public safety and other issues that cut across state lines. But most members of the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus are boycotting the meeting because of the flag, and more than a dozen other people with a group called the Mississippi Rising Coalition protested the banner Saturday outside the meeting's opening reception in Gulfport.Mississippi has the last state flag with the Confederate emblem — a red field topped by a blue tilted cross topped by 13 white stars. Critics see the symbol as a racist reminder of slavery and segregation, but supporters say it represents history and heritage.About 50 black and white lawmakers from Mississippi, Georgia and other states had a meeting Monday to discuss how Confederate symbols affect race relations and the economy. Democrat George Flaggs, a black former Mississippi lawmaker who is now mayor of Vicksburg, took part in the meeting that was closed to the public and the media."I think it was an open, honest discussion with a lot of integrity," Flaggs said of the session that was moderated by staff members from the University of Mississippi's William Winter Institute on Racial Reconciliation.Flaggs told The Associated Press that a white lawmaker from Georgia said removing the Confederate battle emblem from the state flag there several years ago has boosted the economy and helped improve race relations.When the legislative meeting opened Saturday, protesters picketed with signs and speeches to denounce the Mississippi flag."This demonstration is not a demonstration of black against white, white against black. It's a demonstration of right against wrong," said Curley Clark, president of a local NAACP chapter on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.He noted that black and white people were demonstrating."We stand together against this racist flag," Clark said on a video posted to Facebook by the Mississippi Rising Coalition.The Mississippi flag and other Confederate symbols have come under scrutiny since the June 2015 massacre of nine black worshippers at a church in Charleston, South Carolina.
