A common scam comes from people setting up fake charities to solicit donations."They are total Grinches," said Deborah Brady, president of the Better Business Bureau. "What we see is people taking advantage of those people who are trying to do good."Here are the top five scams, according to the Better Business Bureau Serving Western Ontario: 1. Puppy scams-This is a case where people are enticing online shoppers to buy a pet based on a picture on their website. The bureau warns that no one knows if it's the actual pet. They also don't know if that pet is coming from some sort of pet mill. Many times people are giving their credit card and payment information to a stranger. 2. Social media gift exchange-Buy one, get 36. It's basically a pyramid scheme. If people take a moment and think about it, there's no way they will receive 36 presents for just giving one gift. These types of offers often require people to give away their personal identification number. These scams are also called Secret Sister Exchange. 3. Free gift cards-This is where a computer pop-up offers a survey in exchange for a free gift card. Scammers are trying to get personal ID or a virus on the victim's computer. Nobody is giving free gift cards away. Don't buy gift cards from anything other than the authorized retailer. 4. Temporary holiday jobs-Check out a company's reputation with BBB because no one wants to put in 20, 40 or more hours of work for a business that's not going to pay and worse, may even be getting job seeker to participate in an illegal activity. 5. Grandparents scam-Senior citizens should be very cautious if they get a call from a grandchild claiming to be in an accident, hospitalized, or arrested when traveling in another country. Don't send money until another family member confirms this is true.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - Several abortion providers sued Texas in federal court on Monday to halt a new regulation that requires them to dispose of aborted fetal tissue either through burial or cremation, saying the rule is designed to limit abortions in the state.The regulation, to take effect on Dec. 19, would also require hospitals and other medical facilities to bury or cremate miscarried fetuses. It is seen by women's health providers as part of a nationwide agenda to place new restrictions on abortions."The Regulation has no public health benefit. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday turned away appeals from death row inmates in four states that raised different questions about the fairness of capital punishment.Justice Stephen Breyer, commenting on two of those cases, repeated his call for the court to take up the constitutionality of the death penalty. Breyer said defendants who face death sentences are not society's worst criminals but are "chosen at random, on the basis, perhaps of geography, perhaps of the views of the individual prosecutors, or still worse on the basis of race."The four appeals rejected Monday were from:— James Tyler of Louisiana, whose lawyer conceded his guilt in the hope of drawing a life sentence, even though Tyler repeatedly objected to the strategy.— Sammie Stokes of South Carolina, whose lawyer had previously prosecuted him for assaulting his ex-wife and never informed the judge about the earlier case.— Romell Broom of Ohio, who survived a botched execution in 2009.— Henry Sireci of Florida, who was first sentenced to death 40 years ago.Breyer addressed Broom's and Sireci's cases on Monday, and made reference to an Alabama man who was executed last week even though the jury in his case had voted 7-5 to recommend a sentence of life in prison. The trial judge imposed a death sentence, lower courts upheld it and the justices divided 4 to 4 on whether to issue a last-minute stay — one vote less than was necessary to halt the execution.Breyer said the cases are among those the high court has rejected that called for review of executions "taking place in what I would consider especially cruel and unusual circumstances." Many people attribute this increase in hate crimes to the aftermath of Britain's "Brexit" vote to leave the European Union, while others say the rise is the result of an increase in reporting such incidents rather than a rise in hate crimes themselves.Either way, the British government hopes the new definition will offer a more concrete and clearer notion of anti-Semitism, to be adopted in as many circles as possible. Proponents believe that the clarified definition will prevent vagueness that may lead to anti-Semitic crimes going unreported or unacknowledged. In a galactic commune far, far away, a galaxy is facing an identity crisis.Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope have captured an image of the NGC 4388 — a galaxy located roughly 60 million light-years from Earth in the Virgo Cluster — exhibiting traits seen both in spiral as well as elliptical galaxies."While the galaxy’s outskirts appear smooth and featureless, a classic feature of an elliptical galaxy, its center displays remarkable dust lanes constrained within two symmetric spiral arms, which emerge from the galaxy’s glowing core — one of the obvious features of a spiral galaxy," the European Space Agency (ESA) said in a statement released Friday. "Within the arms, speckles of bright blue mark the locations of young stars, indicating that NGC 4388 has hosted recent bursts of star formation."Scientists believe that NGC 4388's unusual combination of features was caused due to gravitational interactions with other galaxies in the Virgo Cluster, which is estimated to contain over 1,300 members."Gravitational interactions — from glancing blows to head-on collisions, tidal influencing, mergers, and galactic cannibalism — can be devastating to galaxies," the ESA said. "While some may be lucky enough to simply suffer a distorted spiral arm or newly-triggered wave of star formation, others see their structure and contents completely and irrevocably altered."Another instance of the gravitational interactions between massive galaxies can be seen in an image of the irregular galaxy IC 3583 released earlier this month. The image — also captured by Hubble — shows the Type II irregular galaxy being distorted due to the gravitational tug exerted by Messier 90 — an intermediate spiral galaxy located roughly 60 million light-years away.The Hubble Space Telescope was launched aboard NASA’s space shuttle Discovery on April 24, 1990. Free gift cards-This is where a computer pop-up offers a survey in exchange for a free gift card. Scammers are trying to get personal ID or a virus on the victim's computer. Nobody is giving free gift cards away. Don't buy gift cards from anything other than the authorized retailer. 4. Temporary holiday jobs-Check out a company's reputation with BBB because no one wants to put in 20, 40 or more hours of work for a business that's not going to pay and worse, may even be getting job seeker to participate in an illegal activity. 5. Grandparents scam-Senior citizens should be very cautious if they get a call from a grandchild claiming to be in an accident, hospitalized, or arrested when traveling in another country. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday turned away appeals from death row inmates in four states that raised different questions about the fairness of capital punishment.Justice Stephen Breyer, commenting on two of those cases, repeated his call for the court to take up the constitutionality of the death penalty. Britain has adopted a new legal definition of anti-Semitism in an attempt to curb hate crimes against Jewish people.The news comes after a rise in reports of anti-Semitic incidents in Britain earlier this year. Many people attribute this increase in hate crimes to the aftermath of Britain's "Brexit" vote to leave the European Union, while others say the rise is the result of an increase in reporting such incidents rather than a rise in hate crimes themselves.Either way, the British government hopes the new definition will offer a more concrete and clearer notion of anti-Semitism, to be adopted in as many circles as possible. Proponents believe that the clarified definition will prevent vagueness that may lead to anti-Semitic crimes going unreported or unacknowledged. Nine people died in the June 2015 shooting at a Bible study meeting.The significance of the other churches to Roof, 22, was not explained at the federal trial in Charleston.State crime scene investigator Brittany Burke testified that the lists included other African Methodist Episcopal churches, a predominantly black Baptist church and a black Roman Catholic church in Charleston.Roof noted the addresses, phone numbers and hours for churches elsewhere in the state as well, Burke said.Jurors also heard excepts from Roof's online manifesto, where he criticized minorities and Jews.Two months before the shooting, Roof purchased a pistol and stockpiled ammunition, a South Carolina gun store manager testified.Security video showed Roof shopping and filling out a background check form at Shooter's Choice in West Columbia on April 11, 2015.He returned on April 16 to pick up the .45-caliber Glock, which he is accused of using in the shooting, and to buy five magazines, each capable of holding 13 rounds, store manager Ronnie Thrailkill testified. (Reuters) - The recount effort by Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein in three crucial U.S. states neared an end on Monday, after weeks of legal wrangling yielded only one electoral review in Wisconsin.A U.S. judge in Pennsylvania rejected Stein's request for a recount and an examination of that state's voting machines for evidence of hacking in the Nov. 8 election won by Republican Donald Trump.Meanwhile, Wisconsin election officials said on Monday they had completed their recount. The full numbers were expected to be available within hours, though it appeared they would largely affirm the election's results.Stein, who finished fourth in the election, challenged the results in those two states as well as Michigan, where the state's top court on Friday denied Stein's last-ditch appeal to keep a recount going. All of those traditionally Democratic strongholds supported Trump over Democrat Hillary Clinton.Even if all three recounts had taken place, they were always unlikely to change the outcome.Stein argued that the use in many Pennsylvania districts of electronic voting machines with no paper trail left the system vulnerable to hacking.In a 31-page opinion, U.S. District Judge Paul Diamond in Philadelphia said it "borders on the irrational" to suspect hacking occurred in Pennsylvania. In a galactic commune far, far away, a galaxy is facing an identity crisis.Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope have captured an image of the NGC 4388 — a galaxy located roughly 60 million light-years from Earth in the Virgo Cluster — exhibiting traits seen both in spiral as well as elliptical galaxies."While the galaxy’s outskirts appear smooth and featureless, a classic feature of an elliptical galaxy, its center displays remarkable dust lanes constrained within two symmetric spiral arms, which emerge from the galaxy’s glowing core — one of the obvious features of a spiral galaxy," the European Space Agency (ESA) said in a statement released Friday. "Within the arms, speckles of bright blue mark the locations of young stars, indicating that NGC 4388 has hosted recent bursts of star formation."Scientists believe that NGC 4388's unusual combination of features was caused due to gravitational interactions with other galaxies in the Virgo Cluster, which is estimated to contain over 1,300 members."Gravitational interactions — from glancing blows to head-on collisions, tidal influencing, mergers, and galactic cannibalism — can be devastating to galaxies," the ESA said. "While some may be lucky enough to simply suffer a distorted spiral arm or newly-triggered wave of star formation, others see their structure and contents completely and irrevocably altered."Another instance of the gravitational interactions between massive galaxies can be seen in an image of the irregular galaxy IC 3583 released earlier this month. The image — also captured by Hubble — shows the Type II irregular galaxy being distorted due to the gravitational tug exerted by Messier 90 — an intermediate spiral galaxy located roughly 60 million light-years away.The Hubble Space Telescope was launched aboard NASA’s space shuttle Discovery on April 24, 1990. Since then, it has not only captured an unimaginable number of truly spectacular nebulae and galaxies, it has also peered back over 13 billion years to look at our cosmos in its infancy, giving us, as NASA aptly put in an earlier statement, “a front row seat to the awe inspiring universe we live in.”
