DUBAI (Reuters) - Fire engulfed a 63-storey skyscraper in downtown Dubai on Thursday night, but there appeared to be no injuries, a civil defense official said.Large tongues of flame shooting skywards enveloped the luxury hotel and residential block, which lies across a plaza from the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, where people were gathering for a spectacular fireworks display due to mark the start of the New Year."There are no injuries, thank God," Major General Rashed al-Matrushi, general director of the Dubai Civil Defence, told the pan-Arab television channel Al Arabiya.He said the festivities would go ahead despite the fire, saying: "Of course, it will not affect the celebration."The Dubai government's media office tweeted that civil defense teams were working to evacuate the 300-metre hotel and tackle the fire.It said the blaze had started on the 20th floor, on the outside of the tower, and that internal fire-fighting systems were operating to try to prevent it getting inside the hotel. AT 2:40PM REPORTS SAY 14 PEOPLE WERE SLIGHTLY INJURED IN THE 20TH FLOOR ROOM STARTED FIRE. 1 WAS INJURED A LITTLE MORE SERIOUSLY. AND ONE PERSON WAS SO SCARED FROM THE FIRE-THEY HAD A HEART ATTACK. THE HOTEL IS SUPPOSIDLY 90% CONTAINED.THE SMOKE IS STILL RAGING AROUND THE HOTEL TOP AND AREA.THERE HAVE BEEN 2 EXPLOSIONS HEARD FROM THE FIRE AS IT CLIMBS THE HOTEL.NOW THE LEFT SIDE OF THE HOTEL IS STARTED ON FIRE.FREDRICKA WHITFIELD AT CNN JUST MENTIONED SOME OF THE BUILDING SHOULD START FALLING DOWN ANY TIME NOW. A DUBAI SKY SCRAPPER HOTEL FIRE EXPLODED OUT OF CONTROL FROM THE 20TH FLOOR AROUND 9:35PM DUBAI TIME-12:35PM CANADA TIME.ITS BEEN AN HOUR SINCE THE 63 STORY HOTEL HAS BEEN ON FIRE. THE FLAMES ARE RAGING UP THE FRONT OF THE HOTEL FROM THE 20TH FLOOR TO ABOUT THE 40TH FLOOR. A WITNESS SAID EVACTUATION OF WHICH SHE WAS INVOLVED WAS QUICK AND SMOOTH BY THE EMERGENCY RESPONDERS.THEY DONE A GREAT JOB SHE SAID. ITS 1:40PM AND THE FLAMES ARE NOW GOING AROUND ANOTHER SIDE OF THE HOTEL.AS THE FIRE IS RAGING OUT OF CONTROL. THERE ARE FINALLY PEOPLE SAYING IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN A TERRORIST ATTACK. AND ONE WITNESS ON THE PHONE SAID SHE HEARD AN EXPLOSION OR POPING SOUND-THEN THE HOTEL BUILDING STARTED BURNING QUICK.THE SMOKE IS JUST ENGULFING OVER THE HOTEL AT THE TOP.YOU CAN NOT EVEN SEE THE BUILDING AT THE TOP.THE BLACK SMOKE IS SO THICK.NO ONE IS REPORTED INJURED AT THIS TIME.THE NEW YEARS EVE FIRE WORKS WERE TO TAKE PLACE IN 2 1/2 HOURS.ITS NOW 2:11PM AND THE NEW YEARS CELEBRATIONS WILL TAKE PLACE IN 49 MINUTES IF ITS NOT CANCELLED.WITNESSES SAID THE HEAT WAS INCREDIBLE AS THEY FELT IT FROM THE GROUND.AND IT STARTED ON THE 20TH FLOOR.I JUST HEARD IN 45 MINUTES THE FIRE WORKS WILL STILL GO ON AS PLANNED.THIS HOTEL FIRE IS NEAR THE WORLDS TALLEST BUILDING IN DUBAI.
