U.S. stocks closed slightly lower on Tuesday as investors remained cautious amid weak economic data and mixed earnings results. A continued rout in oil prices put pressure on the energy sector, while transportation stocks were hit after disappointing results from United Parcel Service UPS, -2.90% Declines on the main indexes were milder, however. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.26% closed 5.29 points, or 0.3%, lower at 2,065.89. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.24% fell 41.62 points, or 0.2%, to 17,581.43. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.09% ended the day down 4.56 points, or 0.1%, at 5,030.15. The Russell 2000 RUT, -1.23% fell 15.59 points, or 1.3%, to 1,143.93.

Oil edged below $44 US a barrel on Monday, after another bearish outlook for crude from Goldman Sachs.Goldman said in a research report that oil prices could go "sharply lower" as storage tanks hit capacity, predicting the oil market would not balance itself in 2016.West Texas Intermediate oil closed down 78 cents at $43.81 US a barrel on Monday afternoon, while Brent, the main international contract, was down 59 cents at $47.42 US a barrel.Western Canada Select, a Canadian oilsands contract, had fallen below $30 again to $29.23 US a barrel.The oversupply of oil worldwide has had storage tanks in Cushing, Oklahoma, at record levels for most of the year. It's not just crude that is in oversupply, but also refined products.Goldman Sachs sees further risk to crude prices which are already down 60 per cent from a year ago."Distillate storage utilization in the U.S. and Europe is nearing historically high levels, following near record refinery utilization, only modest demand growth (especially relative to gasoline), and increased imports from the East on refinery expansion and Chinese exports," it said in its report.Earlier this year, Goldman predicted WTI oil could go as low as $20 a barrel.Europe also has storage problem-Research consultancy Energy Aspects points to a similar situation in Europe, with crude oil tankers taking slow routes to their destinations while they await space in port storage facilities.Many oil speculators have been taking long positions in oil, thinking that the market will be balanced next year and prices will rise.But the continued glut is starting to discourage that strategy.Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency, is expecting still further declines in oil industry investment in the coming year.Speaking at Singapore International Energy Week on Monday, he said it would be the first time in two decades that oil investment declines for two consecutive years.Traders are also waiting to hear whether the U.S. Federal Reserve raises interest rates after its meeting this week. U.S. stocks closed slightly lower on Tuesday as investors remained cautious amid weak economic data and mixed earnings results. A continued rout in oil prices put pressure on the energy sector, while transportation stocks were hit after disappointing results from United Parcel Service UPS, -2.90% Declines on the main indexes were milder, however. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.26% closed 5.29 points, or 0.3%, lower at 2,065.89. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.24% fell 41.62 points, or 0.2%, to 17,581.43. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.09% ended the day down 4.56 points, or 0.1%, at 5,030.15. The Russell 2000 RUT, -1.23% fell 15.59 points, or 1.3%, to 1,143.93.
Oil below $44 after Goldman predicts price crash when storage tanks fill-CBC – OCT 26,15-YAHOONEWS
Oil edged below $44 US a barrel on Monday, after another bearish outlook for crude from Goldman Sachs.Goldman said in a research report that oil prices could go "sharply lower" as storage tanks hit capacity, predicting the oil market would not balance itself in 2016.West Texas Intermediate oil closed down 78 cents at $43.81 US a barrel on Monday afternoon, while Brent, the main international contract, was down 59 cents at $47.42 US a barrel.Western Canada Select, a Canadian oilsands contract, had fallen below $30 again to $29.23 US a barrel.The oversupply of oil worldwide has had storage tanks in Cushing, Oklahoma, at record levels for most of the year. It's not just crude that is in oversupply, but also refined products.Goldman Sachs sees further risk to crude prices which are already down 60 per cent from a year ago."Distillate storage utilization in the U.S. and Europe is nearing historically high levels, following near record refinery utilization, only modest demand growth (especially relative to gasoline), and increased imports from the East on refinery expansion and Chinese exports," it said in its report.Earlier this year, Goldman predicted WTI oil could go as low as $20 a barrel.Europe also has storage problem-Research consultancy Energy Aspects points to a similar situation in Europe, with crude oil tankers taking slow routes to their destinations while they await space in port storage facilities.Many oil speculators have been taking long positions in oil, thinking that the market will be balanced next year and prices will rise.But the continued glut is starting to discourage that strategy.Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency, is expecting still further declines in oil industry investment in the coming year.Speaking at Singapore International Energy Week on Monday, he said it would be the first time in two decades that oil investment declines for two consecutive years.Traders are also waiting to hear whether the U.S. Federal Reserve raises interest rates after its meeting this week. Islamabad (AFP) - Rescuers were Tuesday picking their way through rugged terrain and pockets of Taliban insurgency in the search for survivors after a massive quake hit Pakistan and Afghanistan, killing more than 300 people.The toll was expected to rise as search teams reach remote areas that were cut off by Monday's powerful 7.5 magnitude quake, which triggered landslides and stampedes as it toppled buildings and severed communication lines.A police official in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar told AFP they had not been able to get in touch with authorities in the district of Kohistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to see how its population of nearly half a million people had fared..There is no way to communicate with the officials in Kohistan, the communication system has been disrupted and roads blocked so we cannot say anything about the damage there," the official told AFP.In other remote areas residents -- including children and the elderly -- were helping with relief work, many of them digging through rubble for survivors.The bulk of the casualties were recorded in Pakistan, where 228 people were killed, including 184 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and more than 1,600 injured, disaster management authorities said.Pakistan army helicopters began evacuating victims Tuesday to Peshawar and Rawalpindi.The military has also sent medical teams, tents and rations to affected areas, while India -- whose relationship with Islamabad is often prickly -- said it stood ready to help.For many, Monday's quake brought back traumatic memories of a 7.6 magnitude quake that struck in October 2005, killing more than 75,000 people.Muzaffarabad resident Shehnaz Rasheed, 34, whose daughter was killed in the 2005 disaster, said that as the quake struck he feared "doomsday was being repeated"."I ran towards my children's school leaving everything behind -- I did not even close the doors of my house and did not care for anything on the road," he told AFP, explaining he was frantic to reach his two sons so he could "die together with them if we have to die".Afghan officials said at least 76 people were confirmed dead and hundreds more injured, with casualties reported from around half a dozen of the country's 34 provinces, and some 4,000 homes reported damaged.The government has implored aid agencies for assistance.But large swathes of Badakhshan, the remote province where the epicentre is located, and other areas are effectively controlled by the Taliban, posing a huge challenge to any official aid efforts.The militants on Tuesday urged charity organisations not to hold back in delivering aid, and vowed its fighters would provide "complete help" in the affected areas.- 'They could not even talk' -In one of the most horrifying incidents to emerge so far, a dozen Afghan schoolgirls were trampled to death as they rushed to escape their classrooms in remote northern Takhar when the quake struck.Bystanders rushed the dazed and terrified survivors to hospital, many lying limp in the arms of their rescuers, as doctors tried reviving some of them by pumping their chests."When the relatives of the dead students came to collect their bodies, they were so distressed that they could not even talk to authorities to record their names," said Hafizullah Safai, head of the Takhar health department.The quake was centred near Jurm in northeast Afghanistan, 250 kilometres (160 miles) from the capital Kabul and at a depth of 213.5 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.In Nepal twin quakes in April killed more than 8,900 people, triggered landslides and destroyed half a million homes.The October 2005 quake, whose epicentre was several hundred kilometres away from Monday's quake and which was much shallower, also displaced some 3.5 million people.

Exact numbers are not known because phone lines are down and communication has been cut off in many areas."A dozen Afghan schoolgirls, all under 16, were trampled to death in the remote northern province of Takhar as they rushed to escape their classrooms when the quake struck.Bystanders rushed the dazed and terrified survivors to hospital, many lying limp in the arms of their rescuers, as doctors tried reviving some of them by pumping their chests manually."When the aggrieved relatives of the dead students came to collect their bodies, they were so distressed that they could not even talk to authorities to record their names," said Hafizullah Safai, head of the Takhar health department.- 'Scary feeling' -The quake was centred near Jurm in northeast Afghanistan, 250 kilometres (160 miles) from the capital Kabul and at a depth of 213.5 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.The quake, which lasted at least one minute, shook buildings in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, sending thousands of frightened people rushing into the streets.Traffic came to a halt in downtown Kabul, with frightened people getting out of their cars as they waited for the quake to stop.Live footage from an Afghan news broadcast filmed in Kabul showed the anchor abandoning his desk as the quake shook the cameras.Restaurants and office buildings emptied in Islamabad, with cracks appearing in some buildings but no major damage reported."We grabbed each other and were crying, we could not do anything, I felt so helpless," 16-year-old student Farhana Parveen, whose Islamabad school was evacuated, told AFP."I had the scary feeling that the whole world would collapse."Hundreds of people in northern India poured onto the streets from office blocks, hospitals and homes.Delhi's metro ground to a halt during the tremor although the airport continued operating.In the Kashmir region, panicked residents evacuated buildings and children were seen huddling together outside their school in the main city of Srinagar.The rescue effort was being complicated by the lack of communications, with the region's already fragile infrastructure hit.Gul Mohammad Bidar, deputy governor of Badakhshan in Afghanistan, told AFP lines were down and it was difficult to reach stricken communities."The earthquake was very powerful -- buildings have been damaged (in Faizabad) and there are possible casualties," he said.Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter immediately after the quake, saying that India stood ready to assist, including in Afghanistan and Pakistan if required.Pakistan mobilised troops and all military hospitals were put on high alert, army spokesman Lieutenant General Asim Bajwa said, with the air force also offering support.Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, which lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.The epicentre of Monday's quake was just a few hundred kilometres from the site of a 7.6 magnitude quake that struck in October 2005, killing more than 75,000 people and displacing some 3.5 million more, although that quake was much shallower.In Nepal twin quakes in May killed more than 8,900 people, triggered landslides and destroyed half a million homes.

THERE IS NOW 307 KILLED-AT LEAST 2,000 INJURED IN THE 7.5 QUAKE FELT IN AFGHANISTAN-PAKISTAN AND INDIA AREAS.WHAT I AM AMAZED AT WITH THIS QUAKE IS THERE IS HARDLY ANY AFTER SHOCKS.IN THE LAST 2 DAYS IT SEEMS LIKE THERE WAS ONLY 6 AFTER SHOCKS.UNLIKE THE CHILE QUAKE A COUPLE A WEEKS BACK.WERE THERE WAS HUNDREDS OF AFTER SHOCKS.I DO FIND THIS VERY INTERESTING.AND THE BIGGEST AFTER SHOCK WAS ONLY 4.8.
