The prime minister has repeatedly insisted, most recently on Saturday night after US Secretary of State John Kerry met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and King Abdullah II in Jordan, that Israel has no intention of changing the status quo on the Temple Mount.Hotovely said Monday that the site was “the center of Israeli sovereignty, the capital of Israel, the holiest place for the Jewish people.”“It’s my dream to see the Israeli flag flying on the Temple Mount,” she said in an interview with the Knesset channel.Hours later, she issued a statement clarifying that her “private opinions were not government policy” and that she was “committed to the policy by which the prime minister said that there would be no change to the status quo.”Hotovely, who favors the annexation of the West Bank and opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state, has made public visits to the Temple Mount in recent years along with a handful of other right-wing Israeli lawmakers. She recently said that any international observers placed on the Temple Mount would be a violation of Israel’s sovereignty.“If I were to tell the prime minister what’s correct, in my eyes it’s definitely not proper to see the flags of the Islamic State or Hamas, in my eyes that’s a disgrace,” she said. “We need to fly the [Israeli] flag. This is the capital of Israel and this is the holiest place for the Jewish people.”Israel captured the Temple Mount from Jordan during the 1967 Six Day War. Just hours after Israeli paratroopers took control of the Temple Mount, then-defense minister Moshe Dayan ordered the Israeli flag — which the soldiers had quickly raised — to be lowered. Since then, there hasn’t been one on the flashpoint religious site.Jews consider the compound, site of two Jewish temples in antiquity, to be their holiest place. Muslims consider the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which stands atop the Temple Mount, to be the third-holiest site in Islam.Hotovely’s remarks were met with criticism from opposition lawmaker Yoel Hasson of the Zionist Union, who called on Netanyahu to dismiss her immediately.“The messianic deputy minister continues to inflame the entire Middle East,” Hasson said. “Every few months she repeats her calls to fly the Israeli flag on the Temple Mount, as if the situation weren’t volatile enough.”The Temple Mount has been the focus of violent clashes between Palestinian rioters and Israeli security forces in recent months, and an ongoing escalation of violence, involving dozens of Palestinian stabbing attacks on Israelis, has been triggered, in part, by Palestinian claims that Israel intends to change the status quo on the religious site. Israel has repeatedly denied the claims.Non-Muslims are permitted to visit the compound in Jerusalem’s Old City, but non-Muslim prayer is not allowed. The mother of a Palestinian terrorist who was killed while perpetrating a terror attack aboard a Jerusalem bus earlier this month said she hoped her other sons would follow in his footsteps, and, with knife in hand, announced her intention to carry out her own attack against Israelis.During an interview with the Lebanese Al-Quds TV channel, Umm Muhammad Shamasne said the family was proud of her son, who was “martyred for the sake of Al-Aqsa,” and said she was only angry that “he did not take me to be martyred with him.”“We regret nothing, we are proud of him,” Shamasne said, acknowledging that the family had been aware of Muhammad’s intentions to carry out an attack against Israelis.“Let Mu’tasim and Yousuf be martyred as well. It is all a sacrifice for the sake of Al-Aqsa and Palestine,” she said.After offering the interviewer candy to celebrate her son’s martyrdom, Shamasne pulled out a knife concealed beneath her clothes and said, while making stabbing motions: “Watch out, Israel! Watch out!”The journalist asked Shamasne to put the knife away, saying “such spectacles” were inappropriate for the television interview. “I understand the searing pain, the anger, and the tension, but we can’t have such things, if you’ll forgive me,” the reporter said, before turning the subject to home demolitions.Shamasne appeared to be undeterred by Israel’s punitive measure of demolishing the homes of Palestinian terrorists.“The homes will be a sacrifice for the sake of Al-Aqsa. In the latest effort to revive direct Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, New Zealand has drafted a UN resolution that reportedly calls for a freeze on Israeli settlement building in the West Bank and for Palestinians to abandon their bid to take legal action against Israel at the International Criminal Court.The draft resolution would assert that the Security Council is “very concerned” over the stalled peace talks, and call on both parties to “take the necessary measures to rebuild confidence and prepare for the resumption of negotiations,” based on a two-state solution, Haaretz reported on Wednesday.The draft urges both sides to avoid taking “actions or declarations that would harm mutual confidence or predetermine the results of negotiations,” including the expansion of settlements and demolition of Palestinian homes in the West Bank, the report said.Distributed to the other 14 members of the Security Council on Friday, the resolution would also call on both sides to refrain from making “provocative actions” against the status quo on Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, the epicenter of recent unrest in Israel and the West Bank.It would further call on Palestinians to refrain from “lodging complaints against Israel or the situation in the territories at the International Court in The Hague.”The resolution would appeal to Security Council member states, Arab supporters of the Saudi peace initiative and Quartet representatives, to support Israelis and Palestinians in preparing for renewed talks.Last week, New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Murray McCully told the Security Council he hoped the measure would help “stimulate a level of debate” on the way forward as Israel and the Palestinians sink deeper into violence.“The events of recent weeks cry out for council action,” said McCully.New Zealand’s initiative was floated after France circulated a draft for a council statement that failed to win agreement, highlighting difficulties to forge a consensus in the 15-member council.
