The chapel, located in St. Peter’s Basilica, houses the relics of the late Venetian Pope. Lucio Bonora is a prelate from Treviso in northern Italy who works in the Secretariat of State and is a scholar of St. Pius X. On Friday 21 August, the day the Church commemorates St. Pius X, Francis celebrated a private early morning mass and entered the Basilica to pray at the tomb of his predecessor. At 7, while he was kneeling down at the altar, Fr. Bonora began his own mass celebration. When he entered the chapel, he saw about 50 or so faithful and lo and behold, the Pope was there too. According to the website of Treviso’s diocesan weekly La Vita del Popolo, Francis decided to stay for the mass celebration. He rose from the pew to exchange the embrace of peace and got in line to receive communion, followed by a moment of worship when Francis gave thanks kneeling. “At the end, the celebrant invited those who had rushed over in great numbers, to entrust all the needs of their families and the Church, particularly his (St. Pius X’s) successor, Pope Francis, to St. Pius X,” La Vita del Popolo writes. After mass, Francis confided to Mgr. Bonora that he had prayed for catechists in particular. In Argentina, St. Pius X, the “catechism Pope”, is the patron saint of catechists. As Archbishop of Buenos Aires, on the feast day of St. Pius X, the now Pope would meet catechists from the diocese. “I came to say a private prayer,” Francis told Bonora, “because I celebrated mass early, but then I saw you coming to the altar to celebrate and I decided to stay… I told you I’m a devotee of St. Pius X.”The Pope’s devotion for the saint is also evident from one other fact: ever since the first Christmas after his election in December 2013, Francis gave instructions for the nativity scene inside St. Peter’s Basilica to cease being prepared in the chapel of St. Pius X. This tradition prevented faithful from worshiping at the saint’s tomb for months, in other words the time it took to prepare and set up the nativity scene to be displayed. The tomb of the saint would therefore be concealed by the structure during this time. The nativity scene has now been moved a bit further away, to the Baptistry Chapel so the altar of St. Pius X is accessible at all times.A man of the people, Pius X, born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto, abstained from formalisms and after being appointed Canon of the Cathedral at Treviso, he never wore the vestment trimmed in red, a privilege of monsignors. ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey and the United States will soon launch "comprehensive" air operations to flush Islamic State fighters from a zone in northern Syria bordering Turkey, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told Reuters on Monday.Detailed talks between Washington and Ankara on the plans were completed on Sunday and regional allies including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Jordan as well as Britain and France may also take part, Cavusoglu said in an interview."The technical talks have been concluded, yesterday, and soon we will start this operation, comprehensive operations, against Daesh (Islamic State)," he said.The United States and Turkey plan to provide air cover for what Washington judges to be moderate Syrian rebels as part of the operations, which aim to flush Islamic State from a rectangle of border territory roughly 80 km (50 miles) long, officials familiar with the plans have said.Diplomats say cutting Islamic State's access to the Turkish border, across which it has been able to bring foreign fighters and supplies, could be a game-changer. (AP) — As Washington state's wildfires burned into the record books Monday, calls for help were answered from far and near.Fire managers from New Zealand and Australia arrived to contribute to a ground campaign led by firefighters from across the West and augmented by U.S. soldiers.The flames that claimed the lives of three firefighters, injured four others and burned 200 homes also inspired an outpouring of volunteers who have been invited for the first time in state history to help battle the blazes.This summer's fire response across the West has been overwhelmed by destructive blazes tearing through the tinder-dry region.The biggest fire burning Monday was in Okanogan County on the Canadian border, where a group of five fires raging out of control became the largest in state history, scorching more than 400 square miles, fire spokesman Rick Isaacson said.Lightning-sparked fires broke the state record, surpassing blazes that destroyed more than 300 homes in the same county last year."I'd like to set some different records," Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers said.The U.S. is in the midst of one of its worst fire seasons on record with some 11,600 square miles scorched so far. The chapel, located in St. Peter’s Basilica, houses the relics of the late Venetian Pope. Lucio Bonora is a prelate from Treviso in northern Italy who works in the Secretariat of State and is a scholar of St. Pius X. On Friday 21 August, the day the Church commemorates St. Pius X, Francis celebrated a private early morning mass and entered the Basilica to pray at the tomb of his predecessor. At 7, while he was kneeling down at the altar, Fr. Bonora began his own mass celebration. When he entered the chapel, he saw about 50 or so faithful and lo and behold, the Pope was there too. According to the website of Treviso’s diocesan weekly La Vita del Popolo, Francis decided to stay for the mass celebration. He rose from the pew to exchange the embrace of peace and got in line to receive communion, followed by a moment of worship when Francis gave thanks kneeling. “At the end, the celebrant invited those who had rushed over in great numbers, to entrust all the needs of their families and the Church, particularly his (St. Pius X’s) successor, Pope Francis, to St. Pius X,” La Vita del Popolo writes. After mass, Francis confided to Mgr. Bonora that he had prayed for catechists in particular. In Argentina, St. Pius X, the “catechism Pope”, is the patron saint of catechists. As Archbishop of Buenos Aires, on the feast day of St. Pius X, the now Pope would meet catechists from the diocese. “I came to say a private prayer,” Francis told Bonora, “because I celebrated mass early, but then I saw you coming to the altar to celebrate and I decided to stay… I told you I’m a devotee of St. Pius X.”The Pope’s devotion for the saint is also evident from one other fact: ever since the first Christmas after his election in December 2013, Francis gave instructions for the nativity scene inside St. Peter’s Basilica to cease being prepared in the chapel of St. Pius X. ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey and the United States will soon launch "comprehensive" air operations to flush Islamic State fighters from a zone in northern Syria bordering Turkey, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told Reuters on Monday.Detailed talks between Washington and Ankara on the plans were completed on Sunday and regional allies including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Jordan as well as Britain and France may also take part, Cavusoglu said in an interview."The technical talks have been concluded, yesterday, and soon we will start this operation, comprehensive operations, against Daesh (Islamic State)," he said.The United States and Turkey plan to provide air cover for what Washington judges to be moderate Syrian rebels as part of the operations, which aim to flush Islamic State from a rectangle of border territory roughly 80 km (50 miles) long, officials familiar with the plans have said.Diplomats say cutting Islamic State's access to the Turkish border, across which it has been able to bring foreign fighters and supplies, could be a game-changer. U.S. jets have already begun air strikes from Turkish bases in advance of the campaign.Cavusoglu said the operations would also send a message to President Bashar al-Assad and help put pressure on his administration to come to the negotiating table and seek a political solution for Syria's wider war.Ankara has long argued that lasting peace in Syria can only be achieved with Assad's departure. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States will deploy F-22 fighter jets to Europe very soon as part of a broader effort to support eastern European members of the NATO alliance unnerved by Russia's intervention in Ukraine, Air Force Secretary Deborah James said on Monday.James did not give details about the specific number of planes, date or location of the deployment, but said it was in line with Defense Secretary Ash Carter's recent call for a strong and balanced approach to Russia.The first deployment of the Lockheed Martin Corp F-22 to Europe outside air shows is seen as a move to address growing concerns among NATO allies about Russian military aggression. The Air Force has also been using radar-evading F-22 fighter jets to carry out some its attacks against Islamic State, the first real combat air strikes by the jets."Russia's military activity in the Ukraine continues to be of great concern to us and to our European allies," James told a news conference at the Pentagon. "For the Air Force, an F-22 deployment is certainly on the strong side of the coin."Air Force Chief of Staff General Mark Welsh James said the F-22's inaugural training deployment in Europe would allow U.S. forces to train with NATO partners across Europe, testing the ability of the jets to communicate and fight together with the Eurofighter, and other advanced warplanes.James said the deployment would give F-22 pilots more experience with the European terrain. (AP) — As Washington state's wildfires burned into the record books Monday, calls for help were answered from far and near.Fire managers from New Zealand and Australia arrived to contribute to a ground campaign led by firefighters from across the West and augmented by U.S. soldiers.The flames that claimed the lives of three firefighters, injured four others and burned 200 homes also inspired an outpouring of volunteers who have been invited for the first time in state history to help battle the blazes.This summer's fire response across the West has been overwhelmed by destructive blazes tearing through the tinder-dry region.The biggest fire burning Monday was in Okanogan County on the Canadian border, where a group of five fires raging out of control became the largest in state history, scorching more than 400 square miles, fire spokesman Rick Isaacson said.Lightning-sparked fires broke the state record, surpassing blazes that destroyed more than 300 homes in the same county last year."I'd like to set some different records," Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers said.The U.S. is in the midst of one of its worst fire seasons on record with some 11,600 square miles scorched so far. It's only the sixth-worst going back to 1960, but it's the most acreage burned by this date in a decade, so the ranking is sure to rise."It's only Aug. 24th," Isaacson said.
